Razors inspired by the grandeur of iconic houses and palaces in London

You will experience the closest, most comfortable shave with these most classic of razors. The close blade-toskin contact makes shaving with a safety razor an excellent exfoliator and helps prevent razor burn. You will also yield an extremely low cost-per-shave and notice not a smidgeon of plastic is found with razor in hand. In short, a Wilde & Harte stainless steel safety razor is kind to your skin, the environment and your pocket. To explore our range of exquisite razor collections and take advantage of The Art of Luxury offer, visit: www.wildeandharte.co.uk/luxury

As William Morris once advised, “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” Wilde & Harte Ltd are members of the ‘Made in Britain’ campaign. This is an initiative endorsed by the British Government, supported by British manufacturers and recognised by consumers at home and abroad.

Why shave with a safety razor?

It is a truth universally acknowledged that no discerning gentleman’s bathroom would be complete without a stainless steel safety razor. A disposable plastic razor simply isn’t de rigueur at a time when one is trying to do one’s bit to cut down on plastic consumption, and here at Wilde & Harte we have just the thing to take its place. Designed, manufactured and polished by hand to impeccably high standards, our beautifully crafted safety razors showcase the very best of British engineering. We think they would have got the William Morris seal of approval had the great Arts and Crafts designer still been around, and they’re the perfect finishing touch for the tastefully appointed bathroom.

The “Exquisite” campaign is my tribute to cinema and to one of its brightest maestros, Stanley Kubrick. A philosophic filmmaker who, better than others, emanated the magic of that inextricable knot through which cinema exudes life and magnifies it.

EXQUISITE GUCCI

I’ve always been charmed by cinema. For its power to tell stories that can probe human adventure and its drift. For its visionary power to dig up in the real, making it vertiginously imaginative and questionable.

Such a careful look on the human, after all, is so close to me. I could never imagine clothes as severed from the story and life of the person wearing them. If you ask me, a garment is not, and never will be, just a piece of fabric. It’s rather the means through which we are able to unfold who we really decide to be, it’s how we shape our desires and the ultimate sense of our staying. That’s why I’ve always imagined my collections as films able to convey a cinematography of the present: a score of stories, eclectic and dissonant, that can sacralize the human and its metamorphic ability.

I’ve always admired Kubrick’s remarkable capacity in tackling very different subjects. His experimental drive goes beyond any possible categorization. Every film, in fact, digests the manifold souls where dystopia meets parody, drama becomes human

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 54 2022

comedy, horror looks like a psychophilosophic treatise, the feeling of truth evolves into the uncanny. Kubrick was, in essence, a real sculptor of genres: the “cross-genre” director, ahead of his time. His ability to build stories that exceed significance, crossing borders and setting labels on fire, has always been deeply inspiring to me. As an act of love, I decided to reinhabit Kubrick’s films, pushing to the core this incendiary approach. I took the liberty of disassembling, blending, grafting and reassembling them. Sticking to my creative praxis, I seized those movies, resemanticizing them, populating them with my clothes. Trying to create short circuits where the adidas gown, that had already lost its status of sportswear to become a Victorian costume, appears as a new character in the script of Barry Lyndon. The dress designed by Laura Whitcomb, wearing which Madonna grabbed the New York spotlight in the nineties, fits in the gothic scenes of The Shining. The mysterious darkness of the enigmatic ritual of Eyes Wide Shut embraces a venus in fur, embellished with sensual bourgeois pearls. And more, the 90s shoes with a fetish flavour explode through the frames of A Clockwork Orange. Finally, the dreamiest evening dress dangled in soft tulle ruches bursts into the aseptic and dystopian space of the Discovery One in 2001: A Space Odyssey. This situationist game mixes historical plans, references, experiences. The past explodes into the present. Everything can become anything, or something else. As in that famous scene of Kubrick’s masterpiece, where the bone turns into a spaceship. As in life. With “Exquisite” I carry on my attempt to mingle high and low, this time coherently and synergistically with the grammar of the great director. In the selected sequences it feels like Nietzsche, Kant and Freud speak casually to the people in the street. The biggest questions about the meaning of life become pop images. Complex transfigurations in terms of significance, get immediate accesses in terms of experience.

Everything comes to be iconic, symbolically sophisticated, though able to reflect on a culture that we can definitely identify as pop. I chose Kubrick also for this, after all. What he created is part of our collective imagination. Since he was a diviner of vision, his works are as recognizable as the Sistine Chapel, the Virgin of the Rocks or The Simpsons. Manipulating his images,

Thaden handbags are more than just beauty and intrigue - technical masterpieces achieved by the drive and tenacity of their creator. She went to Italy for its long tradition of luxury manufacturing and craftsmanship. The “Whole” was so innovative, she was consistently discouraged by everyone she approached. Thaden seeks to connect with the inner heroine of a woman. Like a well-kept secret, it appeals to someone who asks questions and challenges what is possible. It is not for the masses, but of heirloom quality, meant for those seeking the next level in luxe. It is a genuine original, its own legend in the making. It speaks to the heart of women and celebrates them. A Thaden draws you in and makes you pause to contemplate, ask questions, and observe. The interplay of light and shadow, movement and moment, simplicity and complexity - a Thaden bag is a reflection of the spirit of the women who wear it. Always fascinating and never predictable.

The collection consists of “The Whole” (in Mini, Big, and Small versions) and “The Little Rocket.” “The Whole” captures the multifaceted female personality in a bag. It is not only hand-made, but largely hand-sewn. A deliberate, architectural wonder that cannot be rushed. It is a study in contrasts - soft curves meet rigid pleating, moving leather meets stable form, light meets shadow, gold-plated brass accessories add accents. It defies categorization, like the woman it reflects. An evolving sculpture with a soft leather handle, it can morph into a crossbody with its adjustable detachable strap. A chameleon, it can adapt to its wearer’s needs in just a moment. The Big size can be customized even further with interchangeable gold alloy charms. Like the unpredictable Thaden woman, it can express the mood of those who carry it at any given time. “The Little Rocket” continues the evolution of Thaden with its geometric rigid shape executed in precious materials like ostrich and calfskin. Its form reflects the curves of the female body. It has both a structured gold and leather handle which nestles like a bracelet on the wrist of the wearer or can be modified into a crossbody style with its detachable fold-out internal chain. Both bags are wearable works of art and make a clear statement - as an intersection of art and fashion they attract all eyes.

“As an artist, my creative process is made up of several layers that can stand next to each other, one after the other, at the same time, erruptively or without connection. For example, it’s about the space between things. The excitement is what happens there, where nothing takes place. So much can emerge from there. If you pay attention to the space between things, to what is missing, what is unsaid, what is unformed, you experience the unexpected, and it is as important as the work of art itself. The Japanese concept of “Ma” inspires me very much. Out of this emptiness comes dynamism, a space is filled. I want to capture this dynamic, as if I were freezing an interaction and capturing it in a wearable sculpture. Furthermore, it’s about resonance. My creations are always an expression of what resonates with me and realize itself through me. Resonance is mostly an image of what we know or have experienced, what moves something in us in a unique way. Nature, art and architecture may be one of the main inspirations, but ultimately it can be anything that somehow touches my senses.”

Even more of a boundless creative lab than ever, the watch illustrates the fruitful encounter between Haute Joaillerie and Haute Horlogerie through a contrasting play of diamonds and black spinels beating to the rhythm of a dainty mechanical tourbillon movement. Bulgari, which has always excelled in the art of precious jewel watches, treats its Serpenti icon to a contemporary black-tie look. Quintessential Itsglamour!undulating body and venomous sensuality have contributed to the legend. Snakes have inspired Bulgari since the 1940s. All it takes is a simple teardropshaped watch case and a bracelet that wraps around the wrist one or more times to evoke the spirit of Serpenti. The collection is constantly undergoing new transformations. A single or double tour, a new material, precious stones, a unique calibre. It systematically provokes the same effect: surprise, sensuality, mystery and femininity.

Spinels and diamonds reign supreme, distilling touches of contrast between light and shade. Its 34 mm white gold case is entirely set with diamonds, while its bezel sparkles with black spinels. A pure delight. Its curved, supple, extremely comfortable bracelet pays tribute to Bulgari’s unique expertise in this area and invokes the entire mythology of the serpent. Witness the entrancing allure of this creation with its mesh pattern sometimes paved with diamonds and sometimes with black spinels. This is exceptional Haute Joaillerie embodying a bold determination to combine the mad rush of time with the immortal nature of precious stones. Bulgari and ultra-thinness have an unparalleled history of records punctuated by the Octo Finissimo Ultra and its 1.8 mm thickness. A dizzying figure that also explains the 3.65 mm thickness of the BVL 150 manual winding movement powering the Serpenti Seduttori Tourbillon: a tailormade miniature calibre that had to be designed to the nearest millimetre in order to be housed in the iconic snake-head case.

Breitling has just launched a redesign of its sporty sea watch. The new collection retraces the pared-down aesthetic of the original SuperOcean Slow Motion from the 1960s and 1970s, while adding modern features and a bright palette of color. Plus, it’s no longer strictly a dive watch—surf with it, swim with it, hit the beach bar with it. In the 1960s, the emerging sport of scuba diving was all the rage, inspired by the adventures of ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau. In diving, timing was everything—measured almost exclusively in IS CALLING: EXPERIENCE THE NEW SUPEROCEAN minutes—and Breitling wanted to not only provide the best tool watch for the task, but to give it a sense of style. To create this early SuperOcean, Breitling’s designers eliminated any superfluous features that didn’t support the lifesaving needs of divers underwater. A high-contrast dial ring was introduced to the crucial minutes scale. Out went subtle indexes in favor of chunky luminescent batons for easy readability. And, in the boldest move of all, Breitling did away with the seconds hand, since divers … didn’t really need it. In its place came a revolutionary minutes-based chronograph, dubbed the “Slow Motion” because it took an hour to make a full rotation of the dial. Today, Breitling launched a new Superocean that goes back to the Slow Motion’s simplified tool-watch philosophy. And while the collection has been revised to meet the needs of modern wearers (the seconds hand was, of course, a must), a keen eye will spot several design nods to the original.

THE OCEAN

Available in four sizes (46, 44, 42, and 36 mm), the collection’s colorful dials are paired with three different case metals—steel, steelgold, and bronze. The special alloy used in the 44 and 42 mm bronze versions has an excellent resistance to corrosion but will still develop a subtle patina over time that makes the watch even more unique. The two strap options (a sporty rubber strap and a new three-row metal bracelet) have a folding clasp that allows for micro-adjustments of up to 15 mm for easy wear over rashies and dive Asidesuits.from looking good, the new Superocean is also a technical marvel.

MADE FOR THE SEA

Water-resistant to 300 m (1000 ft), it features broad hands and indexes coated in Super-LumiNova® that allow for exceptional readability underwater. Its scratchproof ceramic-inlayed bezel means it will never wear or fade. For safety, the bezel is unidirectional on most sizes and bidirectional with a patented lock on the 46 mm. This watch is also shock-, sand-, and saltwater-resistant. Its automatic Breitling Caliber 17 comes with a two-year warranty and an approximate 38-hour power reserve.

Best of all, the Slow Motion’s distinctive square minute hand has made a comeback. So has the high-contrast minute scale. Fans will also remember “the dot,” a circular window at 6 o’clock that displayed different colors depending on whether the minutes-based chronograph was engaged, paused, or off. In the new Superocean, a circle near the tip of the second hand gives a wink to that much-loved feature.

Present were surfers Andrew Cotton, Jérémy Florès, and Natxo Gonzalez, along with actors Guillaume Canet from France and Álvaro Morte from Spain. Speaking from the festival, Breitling CEO Georges Kern said, “There’s a certain sameness to the look of most dive watches, but the Slow Motion always stood out from the crowd. We’re so pleased to introduce our modern take on this classic, the all-new Superocean.”

The Breitling Surfer Squad, made up of Kelly Slater, Stephanie Gilmore, and Sally Fitzgibbons, is back as the faces behind the new Superocean collection. The watch assortment includes the special-edition Superocean Automatic 42 Kelly Slater. Co-designed with the surf champion and limited to 1000 pieces, the watch features an eye-popping orange dial and a military-green rubber strap. The color scheme is inspired by a watch Slater’s dad used to wear surfing. Of the collaboration, Slater says, “I’ve been co-creating watches with Breitling for the past few years but this one, in particular, is very personal. It’s inspired by my late father, who had a watch with an orange face that he used to wear surfing for as long as I can remember. The green and orange together is a color scheme I used to like for the airbrushes on my boards growing up. That combination has always stuck with me.” There’s something for everyone in the new Superocean. Collectors will recognize the strong influence of the Slow Motion, water sports enthusiasts will appreciate its technical features, and the style conscious will gravitate towards its day-to-night, beach-to-boardroom versatility. The new Superocean perfectly balances the nostalgia of its heritage while making fresh new waves.

In many countries, blue is the favorite color for most people. In Germany, where watchmaker NOMOS Glashütte is located, studies show: At 19%, blue has a clear lead, followed by green (14%) and red (13%). Blue is exceedingly popular. Blue is the color of the sky and the sea; of longing, faithfulness, cornflowers and eternity. All of which are deemed desirable by many. Blue is classic, elegant and sportive. Currently, company logos around the world prefer blue for the credibility and reliability it exudes. And this makes blue watches the perfect companions to bring to the office as desks fillup once more as people return from vacation or home office.

BACK TO THE OFFICE IN BLUE

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 54 2022 30 WATCHES & TIMEPIECES

Kick back, relax, ignore the CFO and roam the world at your leisure? It has its perks. But with this watch on your wrist, you’ll love returning to the office after your vacation or working from home: The phenomenal, new NOMOS watch on the left, Ahoi date Atlantic, wants to go out. It put on its favorite color especially for the occasion.

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 54 2022

Plenty of reasons to dare to sport more blue on your wrist, alongside white which is always a good choice. At any rate, NOMOS

Glashütte loves blue, and is now presenting an entire range of the most stunning watches in various shades—some new, others familiar. “Although most NOMOS watches are white, none of our models come in quite as many shades as the blue watches,” explains Uwe Ahrendt, CEO of NOMOS Glashütte, describing these little blue miracles.

Do you love blue, too? Do you want to show your readers and users how easy it can be to bid farewell to the summer, vacation and home office as long as they can flash their new watch at the office instead? Great, we’d love to help. We have more photos of watches, more information and anything else you might ask of us: We’ll deliver promptly. Give it a try.

After working from home and going on summer vacation, we’re going back to the office—and we love it! Because these NOMOS watches want admirers, they are wearing their favorite colors, all of them blue.

Whether it’s the watch itself or its shade of blue: Any wrist will look both astute and fitting when wearing this timepiece. (Photo: Florian Fischer)

The caliber is the heart which beats inside every mechanical watch. For this reason, NOMOS Glashütte makes eleven calibers itself—a rare thing in today’s world of fine watches. All of them slender and extremely precise. The only blue found in the neomatik caliber DUW 3001, shown left, is in the blue screws tempered in extreme heat.

31WATCHES & TIMEPIECES

For months, the debate raged at NOMOS Glashütte about the correct shade of blue. The result on the left shows it was time well spent. You will be hard pressed to find a more elegant watch which is also suitable for everyday wear: Tangente midnight blue. A watch resembling a work of art, haute couture, a miracle in blue: This selfconfident NOMOS watch is not made for people who prefer obscurity. Tetra neomatik blue—175 Years Watchmaking Glashütte will draw people away from clubs and parties and back to the office. Very much in vogue! There are plenty of excuses to skip work and stay home. But this watch—its galvanized dial is the pinnacle of sportive elegance—is honest and hard-working. Its automatic movement (handmade, as is standard for NOMOS Glashütte) always delivers peak performance, both at the office and at the gym: Club Sport neomatik 42 date blue. Blue is the color of the sky, of longing, faithfulness, cornflowers and eternity. And blue displays stylishness. To top it off, this NOMOS watch flaunts an ingenious, patented date ring: Tangente neomatik 41 Update midnight blue. “Blue Monday”, is the famous song by the new wave band, New Order. This pioneering piece of synth pop appears to have incarnated in this NOMOS watch. And that’s something of a miracle, 40 years after the song was released: Club automatic date siren Board-levelblue. absenteeism? Maybe everyone’s in home office. Or maybe, your colleagues are out looking for a watch like this one to reflect the new times: Metro neomatik midnight blue by NOMOS Glashütte.

Dior has declared its desire to see such a singular, bewitching stone included in its unique patrimony, on one condition: that the diamond, once cut, must weigh precisely 88.88 carats, echoing the number 8, which is inseparable from the Dior legacy. Education: meeting trade experts in themed exhibition areas

The show’s themed exhibition areas have been redistributed more efficiently, making it easier for the new wave of yachting customers to meet experts in their respective fields and to discover the range of products and services required to successfully complete their yachting project.

THE MONACO YACHT SHOW TAKES ITS “SEDUCATION” APPROACH INTO 2022

The 2022 edition is set to confirm the status of the MYS’s “seducation” programme, which was launched last year. This threeyear plan of action is designed to attract a new generation of yachting clients, thanks to two core concepts: “education” and “seduction” (aka “seducation”).

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 54 2022

The Monaco Yacht Show has announced new developments in its themed exhibition areas, once again proving its will to immerse visitors in the world of superyachting.

Private clients - holding “Discover” passes or “Sapphire Experience” passes (the show’s official visit programme) - and their parties (“Advise” passes) will be granted privileged access to the Dockside Area while the other areas will remain open to all passes. From Thursday 29 September, the Dockside Area will be open to the public.

General Manager of the MYS Gaëlle Tallarida had this to say: “The Monaco Yacht Show made its grand return to the international event scene in 2021, sporting a 3-year development programme with a clearly-stated goal: to promote superyachting among a new generation of clients”.

• Parvis Piscine: yacht interior design and decoration companies, • Upper Deck Lounge (at Parvis Piscine): luxury products and services, • Quai Antoine Ier: yacht tenders, water toys, luxury cars and motorbikes, • Darse Sud tent: equipment manufacturers and yachting services, • Quai Albert Ier tent: yacht-related equipment, maintenance and service Thecompanies.MYShasalso announced the 6th edition of the Monaco Yacht Summit. Held on Tuesday 27 September 2022 at the Monaco Yacht Club, the event will address practical questions on the topics of yacht chartering, buying and building in front of an prequalified audience of experienced or new yacht owners and charterers. Design & Innovation Hubdedicated to future yacht design projects - is set to triple in size, including a 100-m² upstairs conference area. These areas will complement the show’s other themed exhibitions:

The Monaco Yacht Show aims to offer more comprehensive first dip into the world of superyachting. The Sapphire Experience offers concierge services - i.e. directly organising yacht visits hand-in-hand with exhibitors - and a range of other VIP activities and services throughout the show.

The organisers are therefore revamping the Dockside Area, the Sailing Yacht Area and the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub, all three of which were launched in 2021. Be it in the water or on the docks, the Dockside Area features superyachts, tenders and all manner of services directly related to the world of yachting. Visitors can meet the shipbrokers, shipyards and designers who worked on the various yachts on display.

The first day of the show (Wednesday 28 September) will be on invitation-only.

NEW EXHIBITION AREA DEDICATED TO SUSTAINABLE YACHTING SOLUTIONS as well as for budding start-ups working on sustainable alternatives that fit in seamlessly with the yachting world.

The 2022 Monaco Yacht Show will mark the unveiling of the Sustainability Hub: this new exhibition area will welcome companies that specialise in technology aimed at reducing superyachts’ environmental footprint.

The Sustainability Hub was created as part of the Monaco Yacht Show’s eco-friendly approach, which was initiated in 2005.

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 54 2022 40 YACHTS & YACHTING

The Monaco Yacht Show announces its collaboration with the Water Revolution Foundation in order to select companies that are eligible for the Sustainability Hub.

The show thereby serves as a tool to raise awareness on environmental issues within the Monegasque and international yachting community.

The Sustainability Hub is an incubator for companies that provide innovative or tried-and-true eco-friendly solutions,

Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director of the MYS: “When the MYS joined the Carbon Neutral programme in 2005, we were already hell-bent on raising environmental awareness. The MYS later joined the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation in 2010 to support their eco-friendly projects. Might I remind you that the yachting industry had barely started taking on a “green attitude” at the time. Our pioneering approach to sustainability in organising the show, which began 18 years ago, now extends to a new dedicated exhibition at the MYS.

Issue 54 2022 THE ART OF LUXURYIssue 54 2022 THE ART OF LUXURY41YACHTS & YACHTING

Robert Van Tol, Executive Director of the Water Revolution Foundation: “The creation of the Sustainability Hub is a crucial achievement. The Monaco Yacht Show has once again consolidated its leading position in the field, whilst highlighting the Water Revolution Foundation’s expertise in terms of sustainability. Thus, the show’s new exhibition area is designed to showcase forms of technology that will bring concrete improvements to the world of yachting. We are making every effort to find, verify, promote and reward sustainable solutions, whilst encouraging their use and bringing about much needed change.”

The MYS constitutes one of the industry’s major voices; a share of social responsibility that we fully assume today. Therefore, the Sustainability Hub was an obvious and logical next step for the Monaco Yacht Show. This brand new area dedicated to eco-friendly yachting alternatives is part of our sustainability programme, which is set to be extended to the logistics and layout of the entire show, here in the port of Monaco. We intend to provide support to all those involved – exhibitors, service providers and visitors alike – whilst exploring concrete solutions to environmental problems.”

By announcing three new themed exhibitions for 2022 – the Sustainability Hub, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub (new format) and the Adventure Area – the Monaco Yacht Show has proven that it is on course towards its goal: helping the industry redefine the yachting experience (an expression that has become all-too common) and appeal to a new superyacht charter clientele. This new generation challenges current yachting standards: it is revolutionising the concept of luxury with its epicurean vision and desire to freely discover new experiences – one that prevails over the need to own.

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 54 2022

The Dutch shipyard, Lynx Yachts, has revealed the first interior images of its flagship Crossover 27 superyacht Avontuur, ahead of her hotly-anticipated debut at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival. Weel, interiors by the French designer Franck Darnet and naval architecture by the Alkmaar-based studio Diana Yacht Design. Measuring 27.3 metres and delivered to her owner earlier this year, Avontuur is the first Crossover 27 to be built by Lynx Yachts, incorporating numerous custom elements into her layout to meet the requirements of her outdoorsy American owner. Befitting her name ‘Avontuur’ (the Dutch word for adventure), the concept behind the vessel was to maximise tender and toy storage, whilst still keeping the look and feel of a Francksuperyacht.Darnet explains the concept behind the interior design: “We were aiming to create something which is pleasant to live on, not just to look at. This is a very important through-line in all of our designs, as I am also a sailor so have spent a lot of time on a boat over the years! Not only this, but we wanted to create something which uses the best quality materials, but is still easy to maintain and durable.”

Avontuur’s interiors feature heavy use of oak wood and white stone, as well as ‘raw concrete’ colours in the bathroom for a clean, modern and timeless effect. As her designer highlights: “The last thing I wanted was to create some kind of ‘fashion’ interior where you have to throw everything away after only a few years because it’s no longer on trend. With the interior of Avontuur, I feel that it will stand the test of time and still look contemporary in 10-15 years’ time.” He continues: “What I am most proud of on this project is the perspective you get when you look from the aft of the boat, all the way to the forward part of the boat. You can see all of the aft part from the galley in one clear view – which is quite rare to find on a yacht. This also means that there is a huge amount of light coming into the interior of the boat, which creates a wonderful atmosphere on Theboard.”vessel’s initial layout from the yard included four staterooms, comprising an owner’s cabin, a VIP cabin, and two twin cabins with the crew quarters located aft of the engine room. However, Avontuur’s owner opted for a different configuration, featuring just three guest cabins and also integrating the crew quarters into her guest space.

HOTEL BYBLOS THE FRENCHPALACELEGENDARYOFTHERIVIERA

HISTORY On the tree-lined avenue Paul Signac, just a stone’s throw away from the Place des Lices and beneath the citadel of SaintTropez, the hotel was already the talk of the region as soon as building began in 1966, in this small fisherman’s village that had already attracted so many writers, painters, designers and artists. In 1956, Roger Vadim’s film «And God created Woman» introduced Brigitte Bardot to the world and made Saint-Tropez the living symbol of Inlibertarianism.themiddleof the turbulent 1960s, the Lebanese billionaire Jean Prosper Gay-Para decided on a whim to build a luxury hotel, a village within a village, and also a nightclub with an antique-style interior design. An idyllic holiday destination, full of glamour, just like Brigitte Bardot with whom, it was said, he had fallen hopelessly in love…

This is the work of a French family, the Chevanne, owners of Byblos which is now part of luxury hotel group «Groupe Floirat». Their passion has been handed down through four generations, with always the same level of sincerity, the same high standards and an incredible sense of loyalty; values shared by the staff, some of whom have been at the hotel for thirty to forty years Far-removednow.from the flashy, ostentatious luxury of the grand hotels of the Riviera, Hotel Byblos offers each and every guest the feeling of being at home, under the ever watchful eye of its attentive staff, who demonstrate their exceptional professional know-how while creating an atmosphere of pure contentment. With an unrivalled sense of hospitality and an unequalled attention to detail, Hotel Byblos highlights the very best in terms of French «art de vivre».

step ahead of their time, creating today the legends of tomorrow. Impossible to replicate or to duplicate, Hotel Byblos welcomes guests to 17,000sqm of luxury living space, resolutely modern with the very latest technologies, but retaining at all times its unique charm and character.

Hotel Byblos then came into the hands of Sylvain Chevanne who, respectful of his grandfather Sylvain Floirat’s wishes, also took control of the Aigle Azur aviation company. But little by little, he found

However, the outbreak of the Six Day War in June 1967 impelled Gay-Para to return to Lebanon and to give up his creative dream. This heralded the beginning of a new era in the history of Le Byblos and Les Caves du Roy… the story of Sylvain Floirat and his descendants, the Chevanne family.

Later, in 1971, Mick Jagger chose SaintTropez as the destination for his wedding to Bianca Perez. A memorable party in Les Caves du Roy with the Beatles among the guests of honour, was followed by a honeymoon in Byblos’ largest suite – now known as the Missoni Suite.

Inaugurated on 27 May 1967 in a blaze of glorious celebrations, Hotel Byblos and Les Caves du Roy have contributed from their very earliest days to the international renown of Saint-Tropez, without ever losing sight of their primary vocation: to provide comfort and pleasure. An impressive guest list comprising international royalty, movie stars, singers, rock idols, and writers attended the launch. Since then, whole generations have rubbed shoulders, enjoyed informal get-togethers and even forged lasting friendships.

The owner of two hotels in Beirut, including the Excelsior and its nightclub Les Caves du Roy, Jean Prosper Gay-Para wanted to create «a bridge between the French Riviera and the Middle East». He named his creation «Byblos» after one of the most ancient Lebanese towns, which Greek mythology tells us was where Adonis and Aphrodite became lovers. A palace worthy of the Arabian Nights, with a mosaic at the entrance depicting Zeus, who had been transformed into a bull in order to abduct Europa, a Phoenician princess from Greek mythology. Nothing was considered too beautiful for this newly-built jewel of a hotel, in which all the different styles of the Mediterranean from all different ages are brought together in a timeless harmony.

On 19 September 1967, Sylvain Floirat (1899-1993), a former boilermaker who ultimately found himself at the helm of a self-made business empire (Aigle Azur, Breguet Aviation, Matra, Europe 1 and the French broadcasting corporation, CFT) purchased Hotel Byblos and Les Caves du Roy. Early regular guests included the likes of Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton, Duke Ellington, Romy Schneider and French stars such as Louis de Funès, Bourvil, Michel Polnareff, Gilbert Bécaud…

The architects Christian Auvrignon, Philippe Monnin and Philippe Siccardon envisaged the hotel as a small Provence-style village, with narrow houses of different shapes and sizes and dotted with balconies here and there. Boutiques, a bar, patios, fountains, restful lounges: life revolves around a paved square in the shade of a century-old olive tree, imported from Lebanon. The interior designers André Denis and Serge Sassouni embellished the interior with glazed «azulejo» tiles from Andalusia, colourful madras cotton drapes with golden thread, artistic furniture and collector’s items. From the wrought iron staircases, the visitor’s gaze falls upon the polychrome mosaics of Roger Capron, Alain Vagh and Jean Derval, the leading lights of the Vallauris ceramic movement.Fromthemoment of its grand opening ceremony (under the patronage of the French actress Mireille Darc, whom the Lebanese billionaire had met at the Excelsior in Beirut when she was filming scenes for George Lautner’s «La Grande Sauterelle»), Byblos has become symbolic with the image of sun-drenched holidays hidden away from prying eyes. The opening night on 27 May 1967 will forever be engraved in the memory of those who were lucky enough to be there; the 700 invited guests discovering a hotel that shook up the established codes associated with luxury hospitality.

Having been initiated since childhood in the pleasure of welcoming guests and offering them the best possible time, their only son Antoine Chevanne became totally enamoured with the world of luxury hospitality; and is now in the process of writing the future chapters of the legend that is Byblos Saint-Tropez. Following his studies (at Paris-Dauphine and Cornell University) and a period of globe-trotting, he became General Manager at Le Byblos (from 2001 to 2006) before becoming Chief Executive Officer of Groupe Floirat, paying homage to his great grandfather in the Theprocess.family story has added several new pages with the acquisition of two exceptional four-star hotels, La Réserve de Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Les Manoirs de Tourgéville in Normandy, where guests can be sure to find the same attention to detail, the same convivial atmosphere, the same quest for excellence and the same family spirit as in Saint-Tropez. The renowned French touch that is so sought-after in the world of luxury hospitality.

Starting out with sixty bedrooms when the hotel first opened, Byblos has always drawn inspiration from the prevailing times in order to improve its offering to its guests. The purchase of a neighbouring plot of land in 1983 provided the space to build an additional wing, La Bastide, and a further separate outbuilding, Le Hameau, now covering a total of 17,000 sqm. To make them even more spacious and to bring in more light, certain bedrooms and suites were later joined together.

The heyday of the “charming house in Grésy (...) with its garden of a thousand roses”. Dr Léon Brachet was born and raised in the Château until he left to study medicine in Montpellier where he met his wife Nelly Bazille. In 1864, he returned to Aix-les-Bains and became a doctor at the thermal baths. A leading figure in Savoyard high society, he played a key role in the development of the spa resort. He resided in the centre of the town of Aix-les-Bains in the Villa Frieda, which he renovated and had elevated at great expense. When he inherited the family château in 1886, he did not settle there because, given the means of transport of the time, it was too far from downtown Aix-les-Bains. For ten years, he therefore rented it out to an English countess, Lady Virginia Somers. Born and raised in India before returning to England at the age of 18, she was the great-aunt of celebrated writer Virginia Woolf. At Château Brachet, she hosted lavish picnics and parties throughout the spa season, which were regularly attended by Dr Brachet and his wife Nelly. In 1890, Queen Victoria herself, during her third visit, came to take tea with her compatriot at the château, which she described as a “small picturesque house with its old-fashioned charm”! Also received by Lady Somers, Mary, the wife of Victorian painter George Frederic Watts, spoke of the “charming house in Grésy (...) and its garden of a thousand roses”.

Léon Brachet: a pioneer of thermal treatments (1840-1898)

Staying at Château Brachet is not just about pampering your body and indulging in gastronomy, but a chance to travel back in history. The establishment is the ultimate homage to Dr Léon Brachet, one of the last owners of this stately home. His untiring efforts to transform Aix-les-Bains into the queen of spa resorts at the end of the 19th century saw him mingle with the European Foraristocracy.thecurrent owners, the acquisition of this building in 2010 was a case of love at first sight but also a major gamble. They confide: “We had to wake up the sleeping beauty. Turning it into a hotel was a rather wild dream. This renovation, which we wanted as faithful as possible to the rules of the art and the “soul” of the buildings, was made possible because, just before the time of the sale, we were made aware of many history components around this residence and its owners /visitors. We then brought in 3 contemporary history master’s degree students from the University of Grenoble who took a very active part in researching the history of the Château and were slowly able to piece together the puzzle of this intricate heritage.” The goal was for the château to embody the French art of living and to recreate the rather relaxed atmosphere of the age. Thus, to convey the power of attraction of Aix-les-Bains, where aristocrats, crowned heads, artists and intellectuals - from the Austrian Empress “Sissi” to Sarah Bernhardt, not forgetting Queen Victoria, King George I and the thespian Coquelin brothers - all flocked to enjoy the thermal “seasons”. The result? After a ten-year restoration, the building has been brought back to life, transformed into an elegant historical boutique-hotel that offers modern comfort as well as a unique journey back into a forgotten era: Aix-les-Bains’ golden age as a spa resort.

The boom in thermal treatments at the end of the XIXth century can be put down in part to Doctor Léon Brachet, nicknamed the “Doctor of Kings”. Wielding significant influence, he was instrumental in the development of Aix as a spa resort and its renown among European high society. He even wrote books in English on the matter such as “Aix les Bains in Savoy, the medical treatment and general indications” published in 1887, and threw himself into the creation of the Revard rack railway, the first local Golf course, the Racecourse and the Alpine Club. A pioneer in the field of tourism, he also served as a town councillor, then deputy mayor of Aix-lesBains and even as president of the Casino Grand Cercle.

Finally, to pay tribute to the heritage of Aix-les-Bains, particular attention has been paid to the bathrooms. Laid out and furnished as havens of elegance, they have been designed as chic water rooms to be admired for their aesthetics. Most of them are equipped with comfortable bathtubs, in addition to spacious showers.

Elegant surroundings in an idyllic setting

The restaurant, La Table du Château, and its crowning glory, the sculptural “ship’s hull” frame, has been decorated using noble materials and finishes. The dominating colours are variations on the themes of celadon, beige, taupe and terra cotta in a range of textures and textiles. Panels of blond oak, a decorative fresco, comfortable benches, wing chairs and an eye-catching iron chandelier with its faux candles, furnish the space. The granite tables, made from Egyptian stone that required an old quarry to be exceptionally reopened, echo the anthracite cabochons of the travertine floor and the shades of the Belle Époque glass roof. But when the weather is clement, nothing compares to al fresco dining on La Broderie, the outdoor terrace seating 50, to take in the exceptional panorama of the landscaped gardens and flowerbeds. The hidden gem worth discovering however is La Table du Jardinier. Located under the ‘Gloriette’, in the heart of the vegetable garden, it offers a gourmet and bucolic escape surrounded by greenery. Restaurant open every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays A Victorian vibe and a subtle nod to spa culture!

Each category of rooms and suites (from 18 to 55 m²) is decorated in a unique style featuring luxurious details, harmonious colours, refined prints and noble materials. But each also boasts its own distinctive views, over the gardens, the solarium, the fishpond, the cross-shaped courtyard or the vineyards. While some open out onto terraces, those with sloping ceilings showcase the intricate framework. All have one common denominator in that they capture the soul of this stately home back in its Victorian heyday, without skimping on the excellence of modern comfort (top-of-the-range bedding, smart gadgets, etc.) and a particular concern for sustainability and health (wifi on/off, antiradiation rooms, choice of surfaces, etc.).

Arguably the Supra is the most attractive purchase in its market when you look at its close rivals but what makes it stick out from the crowd? Well, you can start with the 3.0-liter straight-six turbocharged petrol BMW engine. The performance coming from the engine is really impressive and the sound is one that I would like to take out of the car and put into most other cars that I drive.

GR SUPRA 3.0 PRO REVIEW

I did wonder if I would miss the manual gearbox in the Supra and at times I admit I did but I have to give the eight-speed gearbox some credit as is was a lot quicker to respond than others I have tested. Although Toyota has now released a manual version of the Supra for the petrol heads out there.

While we are seeing more SUVs and electric vehicles on the road it is nice to know that there are still a few options around for someone looking for a car that offers an enjoyable driving experience mixed with some brute power and one that makes you feel like you are inside a real-life video game. 2022

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 54

Without a doubt, the Supra is one of the most stunning cars on the road, the curving of the double-bubble roof and the mean-looking rear (which is one of the best rears I’ve seen) just look simply beautiful. The exterior reminds me a little of the Toyota 2000 GT which is obviously a huge compliment to the Supra. I lost count of the number of times people stopped and stared when I drove past, the car was a head turner for sure.

When driving the Supra around town it really makes its presence known.

The first thing people notice is the sound coming from the 3.0-liter straight-six, they turn to see what’s coming look back, and then take a second turn to look at the car.

So when you get inside the car you can see straight away the influence coming from BMW which is not a bad thing in places.

OVERALL

If you are looking for a car that is a head-turner, one that has one of the most stunning exteriors and oozes attitude and heritage then I don’t see why anyone would walk away from this car. It’s a smooth cruiser that can give you thrills.

The Supra is a very easy car to drive. It’s responsive, quick and gives you a sense of confidence which makes you feel like you can trust it so it does give you a bit of encouragement to see what the 3.0-liter straight-six can really do. In sport mode the first thing you notice is the rumble from the exhaust, it is one of the most addictive noises and if I could bottle the noise up and sell it I would make a fortune.

Pros One of the best automatic gearboxes around Great brake system Iconic HandlingDesign Cons The interior is a little too “BMW” for me Visibility (But expect this and accept it)

The quality of the interior is fantastic and you don’t get lost or confused with loads of unnecessary buttons. I do feel that I would have liked a little more Surpa on the inside but that is easily forgiven as soon as you set off. The seating position is great and the seats are very comfortable. It is difficult to see out and you do rely on the driving assist but once you get used to it then it really isn’t an issue.

MULLINER BATUR STARTS DESIGN REVOLUTION FOR BENTLEY

Created by Director of Design Andreas Mindt and his team, the Batur is a showcase of a new design DNA that will ultimately guide the design of Bentley’s future range of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). The collection of just 18 series examples of the Batur is the latest project by Bentley’s in-house bespoke and coachbuilding division, Mulliner, and succeeds the Bacalar – a run of 12 individually specified, designed and handcrafted Barchettas that relaunched coachbuilding at Bentley.

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 54 2022

Bentley Motors has unveiled the Bentley Mulliner Batur – a new twodoor grand touring coupé limited to 18 series pieces that embodies the start of a design revolution at Bentley. Like its predecessor – the Bacalar – the Batur is named after a beautiful natural body of water. Lake Batur is an 88m deep, 16 km2 crater lake in Kintamani on the island of Bali, Indonesia, and provides nutrient-rich water to both local hot springs and agriculture.

All 18 examples of the Batur have already been reserved. Each one will be designed collaboratively with each customer, guided by Mulliner’s in-house design team. Customers will be able to specify the colour and finish of practically every surface of the Batur, to create a car as individual as they are. Each one will then be handcrafted over the course of several months in Mulliner’s workshop at Bentley’s carbon neutral factory in Crewe, England, with first deliveries expected in mid-2023.

The Batur was unveiled at Bentley’s Signature Party at Monterey Car Week, in front of almost 500 VIP guests, by Bentley’s Chairman and Chief Executive, Adrian Hallmark, who comments: “The Batur is a significant car for Bentley. Far more than the heir to the highly successful Bacalar, the Batur showcases the design direction that we’re taking in the future as we develop our range of BEVs. Andi Mindt and his team have reimagined the classic Bentley design cues into a stronger, bolder design that remains both elegant and “Beneathgraceful. the beautiful exterior lies the most powerful engine we’ve ever developed. Our W12 engine is easily the most successful twelve-cylinder automotive engine in history, and as it approaches its retirement to make way for future hybrids and BEVs, we want to mark its accomplishments.

“The 18 lucky customers who have already reserved their Batur will enjoy an unrivalled co-creation experience with our Mulliner Design team in specifying their cars. The Batur is the next step in Mulliner’s expansion, demonstrating the demand for truly bespoke vehicles that combine luxury and performance in ways that only Bentley can deliver.”

Issue 54 2022 THE ART OF LUXURYIssue 54 2022 THE ART OF LUXURY91AUTOMOTIVE

The Batur will also be the most powerful Bentley yet, with a 740+ PS version of the iconic, hand-assembled 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine that has metaphorically and literally powered Bentley’s success for the last two decades. As the engine enters its twilight years as part of Bentley’s Beyond100 transformation journey to being fully electrified, the Batur forms the first part of a celebration of the W12’s extraordinary power, torque and refinement. Engine performance will be matched to the most advanced Bentley chassis ever, with Speed-tuned air suspension, electric active anti-roll control, eLSD, four-wheel steering and torque vectoring.

The Townhouses have been designed with a refined industrial aesthetic, featuring raw natural materials and touches of signature deep indigo that reflect the maritime heritage of this once-thriving river port. Distinct oak floorboards connect the living spaces, while south-facing crittal windows invite sunlight into every corner. Exposed brick and metalwork hints toward the industrial warehouses that were once typical of this part of London’s Docklands. 95LUXURY HOMES

On Saturday 6th August, international property developer Ballymore celebrated the launch of its highly anticipated collection of 13 townhouses at Goodluck Hope, one of East London’s newest and most exciting riverside neighbourhoods. Available to move into at the end of this year, the Townhouses draw inspiration from both the traditional London townhouse as well as the industrial heritage of this Thames-front location; these desirable new homes lie at the heart of Goodluck Hope’s already thriving community and, uniquely, benefit from access to the development’s exclusive world-class amenities and communal spaces, combining to create a very special place to call home. Arranged over four floors, the Townhouses have been thoughtfully designed to reflect the liquidity of modern life, each with three bedrooms, a private terrace, contemporary kitchen, and plethora of comfortable, versatile living spaces. Many of the Townhouses feature a ground-floor studio space that can be transformed into an office, playroom, business studio or gallery, accommodating the growing trends of flexible working and creative living. Designed to offer residents modern, flexible luxury in one of the capital’s most exciting and enviable areas, The Townhouses are perfect for families, downsizers and small business owners.

coloured brickwork, lining the streets in delicate blues, yellows, grey and pinks which create a subtle yet vibrant neighbourhood high street at the heart of the scheme. A few steps away lies the 1595 Club, Goodluck Hope’s collection of world-class amenities which include an indoor swimming pool and Scandinavian-style steam room, state-of-the-art gym, studio, private cinema, business centre and communal gardens commanding breathtaking views of the Thames, the O2 and Canary Wharf. Townhouse residents will also enjoy access to The Lantern Room, a spectacular 29th floor sky lounge providing exclusive space for remote working, socialising and relaxing. Offering seclusion from the rush of the capital, whilst maintaining fast connections to nearby Canary Wharf, the City and beyond via Canning Town station, Goodluck Hope is perfectly placed to support a balanced urban lifestyle. Just a moment’s walk away within the inspirational setting of Trinity Buoy Wharf is Faraday, a growing independent primary school. This unique location, combined with the flexible design of the Townhouses, creates an ideal space for families to spread out and grow as life evolves.

Goodluck Hope contains one of only four remaining dry docks in London, and comprises an eclectic mix of contemporary buildings that reimagine warehouse typology, all set within the historic Docklands on the site of the former East India Company.

Jenny Steen, Sales Director at Ballymore, commented: “Our vision for Goodluck Hope is to create a close-knit riverside community with architecturally striking buildings and a best-in-class amenity offering. The Townhouses at Goodluck Hope are located at the heart of this vision, with high quality finishes and internal spaces set across four floors designed to evolve with life.”

Surrounded by water on three sides, the development redefines riverside living and is situated adjacent to creative community hub London City Island. Goodluck Hope is Ballymore’s latest East London success story, an extension of a strong footprint in East London which has already delivered some of the most ambitious regeneration schemes in the area.

Townhouses start from £1,120,000 and are available to buy now. For sales enquiries, please visit www.goodluckhope.com, email sales@goodluckhope.com or call 0203 944 1825

A noteworthy attribute to this awardwinning villa rental company, is that they are dedicated to green operations. This means they strive to use only sustainable sources in operating their business. Evidence to this is that their accommodations are built from local wood and materials, they have engaged the use of solar-generated energy which powers their villas, and they do all their business transport in an E-Car. In addition to this, they ensure their properties are abundant in fauna and flora, which in turn stimulates a healthy eco-system in the local area. This deliberate focus is aligned with the owner Susanne Fischer to create a natural environment of being located in the beauty of the Alps, alongside a river, surrounded by sensational mountains.

Another wonderful plus for guests of The Kaprun Edition, is that they receive a Kaprun-Zell am See card which allows them free public transport in the local area. It’s just another way they go above-and-beyond in creating exceptional vacation experiences for their valued guests. An elongated version of David Harber’s original Mantle artwork, the Teardrop Mantle is formed from hundreds of 316 marine grade, mirror polished steel ‘petals’. These petals are welded together in a painstakingly precise process to create a stunning piece, resembling a giant droplet of water in an ode to David’s love of nature and the outdoors. The interior of the sculpture can be customised in any paint colour, ensuring each Teardrop Mantle is unique. A concealed, central uplighter brings Teardrop Mantle to life after dark, creating a spectacular effect at night; by day, the mirrored petals provide stunning reflections of the sky and surrounding grounds.

Set in the bustling borough of Belgravia in London is Eaton Place. Designed by Mark Watson Architects, this stunning two-bedroom apartment has been recently renovated to create an enlarged kitchen, living and dining area alongside an extended family bathroom. The design brief was to enhance the natural light and create a feeling of spaciousness in the main living areas. To achieve this, the space was updated to an open plan layout allowing a brighter and airier feel, with a new wood flooring solution commissioned by Havwoods.

Reflecting the light beautifully, Fendi Prime was chosen for its on-trend design and used throughout the downstairs of the property. Contributing to a seamless flow throughout, the contemporary herringbone planks create a feeling of calm. With its warm wooden hues and grey undertones, this beautiful floor covering pairs perfectly with the minimalist and monochrome Ininterior.thehallway,

Crittal glass doors were installed to give a more prominent feeling of space and flow into the kitchen. A clean, minimalist colour palette was chosen for the kitchen and living room, with darker accents added in the kitchen cabinetry, TV unit and sofas. Styled alongside fluted wood and white walls – the boards help to create a large, airy open-plan space for contemporary living in a classical setting.
