LIGHTING DESIGN TRENDS 2020

Lighting is one of the most important features in the home, owing to its dual purpose quality of function and decoration. The year 2020 has seen a smooth transition in lighting trends for the home, warming the metals and smartening the industrial influence. The lighting trends that can be followed this year are indeed suitable for all areas of the house, however they can be more impactful in particular rooms, and that is what will be explored below:

Kitchen The kitchen has become evermore important, with individuals seeking expansive areas that seamlessly transition from kitchen into dining area when they purchase a property now. The social element of the kitchen is what makes it the perfect room to showcase focal point lighting. The focal point trend is based around large, decorative lighting fixtures, which immediately draw attention, and in this case would be most impactful above an eating area, such as a dining table. Additionally, as seen below, large lighting features can be used in other rooms of the house too, to draw the room together, such as the living room.

23

Alternatively, for a less polished look, there is a strong trend for refined, industrial lighting, which is particularly effective over a work surface or breakfast bar. The fixtures favoured for this strike a perfect balance between exposed and refined, to embody the sharp features of the tools in a kitchen. These can take a number of shapes as demonstrated below, from one individual longer piece, to multiple spotlights on a frame. For a more natural looking finish, individuals may opt to try the biophilic trend that has been ever growing in popularity, which is centred around the connection between humans and nature, and can take shape in a number of ways. Bulbs and structures may be green and a physical representation of nature in the shape of a leaf, or alternatively the fixtures may be more subtle with incorporation of natural materials.

24

Bedroom Last year saw a fondness of grey and ‘greige’ with cold metals complementing these colours in lighting and decorative accessories. However, 2020 is celebrating warmer metals with golds, coppers and brass taking a front seat. These colours are the ideal partner for the soft furnishings of the bedroom, to be used for table lamps or ceiling fixtures, creating a welcoming ambience. The picture below appropriately showcases the warm glow of a copper coloured table lamp that can be utilised in the bedroom. Geometric shapes are another significant trend for both lighting and interior design for 2020. The key to effectiveness for this trend is geometric shapes with clean lines, they should be bold and sharp shapes to balance the softness of the bedroom. The shapes can be impactful in a variety of lighting types, from ceiling structures, table lamps to wall lights as seen in the pictures below.

Designed and assembled in north London, there are five ranges in the collection, each with customisable designs, including ceiling lights, wall lights and floor lamps, to elevate a variety of interior spaces. New to the market this April is the Rosa collection which was designed to showcase the opaque beauty of natural marble. Featuring a singular pendant light that can form a tiered chandelier, the design incorporates a backlit Rosa Aurora marble disc that emits a soft, warm illumination, pierced by the natural veining of the stone. The double-faced LED base creates an additional glow with reflections and light play framed in a crystal glass sphere. The Rosa collection is priced from ÂŁ745 for a single pendant and can be purchased alongside all the other lighting collections from www.marcwoodstudio.com.

The intention was to hand-blown sculptural workCbrought develop and diversify their existing art glass business “Blowzone” into a new venture; encompassing the new emerging LED technology and combining it with their considerable expertise in glass design, manufacture and aesthetics. ”We were the first UK lighting company to use LEDs as an unseen light source, using the effect of the light through our glass, rather than just creating glass shades” says iestyn Davies, who is the company's Design Director.

CCC is now one of the country’s leading bespoke Chandelier manufactures and designers, still a small family-run company that takes pride in its individual and personal service, creating innovative and site-specific projects for discerning clients worldwide. “We still get excited by a challenging brief that may take us outside of our normal responses, pushing both our artistic and technical boundaries” The company continues to expand its portfolio of materials and finishes, working with architects, design consultancies and specifiers, but ultimately specialising in projects, working directly with the client in high-end domestic projects.

I also wanted to create difference and would ultimately describe the finished house as ‘reminiscent of a stylish New York apartment combined with the softness of an English country house’. Every interior detail, no matter how small, has been specifically considered, individually designed and meticulously executed to the highest standard achieving the perfect marriage of classic and contemporary design.

The property displays a beautiful earthy colour palette with punchy bold colours linking to various seasons throughout the year. Despite the calming hues throughout the property, the house also has bold touches of colour in every room. The lounge displays bold autumnal colours mixed with dragonfly blues and greens whilst the kitchen has an array of charcoal greys, depicting the river with autumnal burnt oranges portrayed through ethically sourced monkfish and salmon skins which are styled through artwork and cushions.

tree trunk with beautiful interesting flowers

43

The property is split across three floors. The top floor has a stunning media room with a floor to ceiling glass wall and we wanted to create a feeling of being up in the treetops. You’re quite high up in this space and already amongst the canopy, so we harmoniously blended natural colours with pops of autumn oranges and yellows as well as luscious greens throughout to give a fun yet calming feeling. One of our other favourite areas is the modern open plan kitchen living space.

Being able to have the bi-fold doors completely open to the back of the house, the sense of inside outside space as one, with the delicate noise of the river and tranquillity of the surroundings makes it a hidden sanctuary! With all the features harmoniously working together you get such a warm homely feel across the whole house. London at that time.

To future-proof the new scheme, the intricate interior has been designed and detailed to function either separately or as a whole, involving two separate M&E systems and structures, so that the home can be re-sold either as a single or as multiple properties, should that be required. The new interior therefore had to integrate two full-height vertical stairways, which created a natural division of space. From an interior architectural standpoint, the main challenge was the overall spaceplan of the two buildings and especially how to connect each floor with a dividing corridor connecting the two stairwells, although this in fact encouraged the team’s creativity, especially on the top two floors.

The difference is clear. In 1992 Demista revolutionized the bathroom mirror market by introducing a heated mirror pad which adhered to the back of the mirror to prevent condensation from forming on the glass. The inconvenience and frustration of these foggy mirrors was therefore eliminated forever, giving you a clearly perfect steam free mirror without the need for time consuming wiping or costly cleaning products. Demista has been proven and accepted nationally and internationally and through its unique reputation and unblemished track record has been the number one choice for specifiers of mirror defoggers for over 26 years. Demista has been fitted in hotel developments globally and has become the industry standard. With over 400 sizes now available, Demista can cover virtually any mirror in 230V, 120V, 24V, 12V, Demista can also make bespoke sizes if required.

DESIGN TIPS FOR YOUR NEW HOME OFFICE

BY PATRICK MCCRAE, CEO OF ARTIQ, ONE OF THE UK’S FOREMOST ART CONSULTANCIES Everything from a chimney alcove, the gap under the staircase or a narrow corridor or could be transformed into a madeto-measure home office workstation. Alternatively, you could redesign your living room table or bedroom dresser to create a multi-purpose workspace. If possible, choose a spot with as much natural light as possible to maximise outside views and create a more idyllic setting.

The coronavirus outbreak has made continuous remote working a sudden reality. With most of us in it for the long haul, it is important to create an inspiring and organised workplace that enables you to work as effectively and efficiently as possible. Practically, designing a creative home office doesn’t need to be expensive. Soft furnishings, interesting artwork, accessories and carefully selected colour schemes can transform any workplace environment, and may even enhance wellbeing, productivity and creative thinking. Location, location, location It’s important to be realistic about how much space you can dedicate to your new working conditions. If your home is on the smaller side, consider creating a stylish multifunctional space.

79

Select your artwork Even if you are crunching data all day, filling your workspace with vibrant art will energise your space and help keep you motivated. Form, light and colour are particularly important for productivity, so artworks are an essential addition to any home office. There are lots of techniques that can be used to create DIY artworks, such as framing wallpaper samples or painting onto simple abstract canvases. Alternatively, you can find businesses like ARTIQ who will assist you in renting contemporary artworks to more transform your home offices. We will also be running an online series arts engagement programmes and art classes over the next few weeks, that can give you further guidance on the right artworks for your home office interiors. When displaying your artwork, try to create a juxtaposition. For example, don’t match the colour of the wallpaper to the colours in the artwork; aesthetically, it’s more striking for the environment to ensure that the eye is drawn to the artwork. This notion extends beyond colour to the style of the building. Classic art in contemporary interiors and contemporary works in more traditional settings are stunning when executed well. It is also important that you don’t hang your artwork too high. The middle of the Furnishings
