TIMOTHY OULTON REVEALS ITS DARING 2018 COLLECTION, CULTIVATED BY HAND Timothy Oulton unveils its 2018 Collection, once again pushing the boundaries and showcasing its unique sourcing and craftsmanship capabilities. Cultivated by hand, the new collection features pieces handmade over countless hours using simple tools and beautiful materials, and testifies to Timothy Oulton’s passion for traditional handcraftsmanship, hard-to-come-by materials, and its fearless quest for innovation. Pioneering the use of ancient rock crystal in furniture and lighting, Timothy Oulton introduces the Inception Rock Crystal coffee table and mirror, and the Elysium mirror. Millions of years old and almost supernatural in appearance, rock crystal has been revered by many ancient cultures for thousands of years, and releases energy when squeezed – the piezoelectric effect. Sourced raw from the earth, the rock crystal is cut and polished using simple tools. For the Elysium tall mirror, each one is then applied individually by hand, with 41 days required to assemble a colossal 15,000 crystals.

7 Also new this year, Timothy Oulton’s Faded & Degraded ‘Persia in Decline’ velvet is featured for the first time on the Westminster Button sofa, bringing a contemporary rock and roll edge to the classic Chesterfield-inspired design. The 2018 Collection features many complex designs that are realised through thousands of hours of hand labour. The limited edition Hestia dining table dramatically anchors a room with its laser-cut black marble top filled with golden veins of liquid brass. For casually sophisticated interiors, new table designs in white marble usher a sense of calm, including the Junction Marble dining table and console, and Expanse extending dining table. Craftsmen painstakingly cut the marble thinly enough to ensure the pieces are lightweight and functional, whilst retaining a powerful feeling of solidity. Genuine English reclaimed timber is given new life in the Vestige cabinetry collection, featuring timber offcuts laid by hand in an eye-catching geometric pattern. The wood is salvaged from buildings in the United Kingdom up to a century old, and de-nailed by hand in the Timothy Oulton workshop.

8

Sensations and experiences form the backbone of every Timothy Oulton design, it’s not just how something looks but also how it feels that is so important. New Tomahawk leather is supremely soft and tactile against the skin, taking its cue from the velvety softness of rose petals. Tomahawk features on the new Lux sectional sofa and Rally chair. Tim Oulton: “The cornerstone of this collection is the materials – some of which are incredibly difficult to collect, and even more difficult to work with. It takes an enormous amount of skill and effort to cut marble thin enough to use in cabinetry, or to use rock crystal to make furniture and lighting. But I’m not interested in anything that’s easy. The unique materials and the complexity in the hand finishing is what makes this collection so special.” With over 40 galleries worldwide from Los Angeles to Amsterdam and in the grandeur of Harrods in London, Timothy Oulton continues its plan of opening new stores in the world’s great cities, with recent additions including New Delhi and Seoul. Further openings are planned for 2018.

Timothy Oulton, Founder and Creative Director of his eponymous brand, is a master at blending traditional craftsmanship and pioneering design. Tim’s story dates back to his childhood days in Manchester, where he grew up surrounded by antiques from his father’s business, Halo Antiques. After leaving school at 18 with no clear plan, Tim embarked on a career in the furniture industry at Halo antiques with his father. He had no intention of remaining in the business and assumed he would eventually go on to work in the city. However, Tim soon found himself captivated by the exquisite quality of the antiques that came from meticulous, timehonoured handcraftsmanship and it is this inspiration that would characterize Timothy Oulton’s collections, as he explains; “exposure to the antiques industry at an early age introduced me to beautiful design. Being surrounded by great handcrafted products most of my life has definitely impacted how I produce my furniture.” Following five successful years of selling restored homeware items in the US, Tim, along with his brother, expanded the business into the UK, where they achieved sales of over £1 million in the first year. That same year, Tim, who realized there was no long term future in the antiques business, officially took the helm at Halo, repositioning the company to focus on blending traditional handcraftsmanship with a modern view point, thus ensuring their relevance in the market. Timothy Oulton’s pieces combine the best of traditional, authenticity with daring amounts of innovation in design, resulting in a product that is authentic and totally unique. “We have a point of view. There is character and soul to what we do. The materials we use, the link to heritage, the designs we have – that combination is unique.” As he explains, Timothy Oulton is “transported by flea markets, I spend ages scouring markets in Britain and elsewhere, looking for classic pieces and unique inspiration.”

12

Encompassing furniture, bedding, kitchen, lighting and a wide range of accessories, the Timothy Oulton collections offer a vast array of living solutions as well as offering customers a guide to different interior style to help them develop their preferences through the themed roomsets. Inspired by his love of vintage luggage, Tim designed his first bag in 2006 and went on to launch the Timothy Oulton bags collection. Having dedicated years to leather hand-finishing, the same time-honoured techniques are applied to the bags and personal accessories range. Timothy Oulton is honoured to be the recipient and to have been shortlisted for prestigious design awards in 2016 including the A&D Award Trophy, the Architizer A+ Award, the WIN Award and the Restaurant & Bar Design Award for both their projects and daring product collections. Today, Timothy Oulton has over 40 stores in some of the world’s best cities including New York, Los Angeles, Moscow, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Australia, Amsterdam, Hong Kong and in the grandeur of Harrods in London. The brand continues its careful expansion and plans for further openings in the future.

CREATING EXTRAORDINARY SPACES WITH MARK TAYLOR DESIGN Prestigious British furniture manufacturer and interiors design specialist Mark Taylor Design is renowned for creating distinctive, bespoke furniture and joinery that transform their clients’ rooms into truly extraordinary spaces. So when the owner of a five-bedroom, detached, Georgian-style house briefed the highly experienced team of furniture and interior designers at Mark Taylor Design to create a show-stopping bar, reminiscent of the Blue Bar at London’s Berkeley Hotel, they rose to the challenge. Designed to provide a masculine retreat, this cosy, intimate, Art Deco-inspired space has become the focal point of the drawing room. However, there were some challenges that had to be overcome, as Susanna Hall, head of interior design at Mark Taylor Design, explains: “The room was relatively small and long in shape, which was rather awkward to work with. So we placed the bar in the centre of the room and then designed around this bespoke, statement piece. We created the banquette seating in one corner to conjure up the feel of a real bar, where guests could sit, chat and play games.” Due to its shape, drawing light into the bar area was also less than straightforward. The team removed the existing downlights and created a coffered ceiling, which they uplit internally. The client’s sculptures were housed in a bespoke, panelled stud wall and displayed in recesses. Susanna continues: “Due to the small, linear shape of the room, we decided to have the bar on wheels so it could be moved to maximise the space. We also felt this would add to its versatility because the movable bar could be wheeled out for events that might spill out into the garden.” The front of the bar is clad in Whistler premium leather and topped with a striking, bespoke pewter surface while the panelling and woodwork is painted in Fired Earth’s Carbon Blue. As well as loving the colour blue, the client is also a car enthusiast, which inspired Mark Taylor Design in some of their fabric choices. “We used Alcantara fabric on the banquette seating and poufs. This tactile material is used for the interiors in top sports cars around the world and is durable as well as beautiful,” explains Susanna. Stereo Interior Sacramento Grasscloth wallcoverings were also used to soften the overall design. At the other end of the drawing room a small, informal table was designed to sit in front of the French doors that lead out to the garden, while the river, which runs behind the property, is reflected in the specialist, antique mirror to bring an element of the outside into the room. Susanna says: “The room creates a space to while away the hours and beautifully mixes the excitement and drama of a bar with the relaxation and comfort of a space to sit surrounded by beautiful gardens.”

LA SHENDA DECO

21

I was born in London and I moved out to Spain in the mid-80s thus making it my permanent home. After working 30+ years in graphic design and the publicity industry I decided to take 180 degree turn and convert my passion for upcycling and my love for design into “La Shenda Deco”. So just like Madonna you can reinvent yourself after 40. With a bit of British tongue-in-cheek humour I revamp granny’s furniture using upholstery, embroidery, paint, carpentry, or any method that inspires me to create unique, distinctive statement pieces that can start from around £200, my stuff is funky, functional and affordable. Much like a Hollywood makeover I feel the need to lend a fashionable hand to lost and unloved furniture who days may be numbered but still retain some lovely lines from a bygone year. Some people ask me why I use recycled base materials; well apart from the important ecological side to upcycling old furniture, (after all how many more landfill areas can this world sustain?) I must admit I do love to hunt around vintage markets and find that perfect piece, dust it off and then breathe new life back into it converting them into bold and colourful pieces of functional art. Working with both private and commercial clients, I provide a tailored bespoke service creating unique one-off pieces of furniture, lighting and decorative homeware around my client’s needs and specifications.

22

All my items are individual, unique and often feature eccentric and statement upholstery designed by myself to tailor to the clients colour pallet and ideas, finished off with a topping of hand painted graffiti-like quotes or phrases. Many of my favourite works include combining or fusing together various pieces of furniture to get the required result. (*See the Spider seat) I run the business online, also displaying some of my work in a couple art galleries around Barcelona. Estimates are free and there is no problem about arranging transport to the UK or Europe. After the estimate is accepted I always provide my clients with Photoshop proofs of what the final finished product will look like before we take the artistic plunge.

29

Aligning with 28 Interior Design’s design ideology of form and function, the lighting in the dining room centered itself as both an art piece and a lighting fixture. Notably, Cansel customcreated the bronze contiguous circle lighting. Some luxuries in the home blatantly stand out. For example, Cansel gold-plated Özil’s logo, “M10”, on a wall near an entrance. Other luxuries remained discreet such as the carefully placed lighting illuminating the staircase and wardrobe.

30

With respect to the lounge, Cansel created an open space with light and airy colors and a fireplace. The lounge features a textured Kelly Wearstler rug and a spectacular view of the lush green backyard to provide a retreat from the city. Another retreat from the city can be found in Özil’s custom home cinema and game room which Cansel equipped with the latest technology, a large cinema screen and surround sound system and multiple custom suede recliner and ottoman sets. Özil was delightful to work with and he expressed his love for his home designed by 28 Interior Design on his HYPEBEAST feature in which he takes his fans on a complete tour of his home. MODERN ELEGANCE NICK AND ALISHA HAVE TEAMED TIMELESS CABINETRY WITH CONTEMPORARY COOL IN THEIR LONDON HOME

After working on a variety of conversions and refurbishments for clients, architect Nick Horvath was itching to work on a project of his own. So when he and his wife, Alisha Bignell, a customer care manager, stumbled across a rather battered Victorian flat above an old shop in south west London, they saw something that other buyers probably didn’t – an opportunity to create two well-proportioned homes. “It was perfect, in a great location close to the Tube, with an untouched loft space with a 3-metre floor to ceiling height,” recalls Nick. “I could see immediately that it had great potential.”

37 The book-matched granite features beautiful, natural veining and subtle variances in shades of grey and white

While living close by, Nick and Alisha set about a six month project. Originally a single flat over two floors, the couple made the first floor into a one bedroom flat to rent. Then they refurbished the second floor and converted the loft space, creating a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment for themselves, spread over the two floors, with new roof terrace added on to the rear of the property. The entire second floor, once two bedrooms, is now given over to an open-plan kitchen-dining-living space. Alisha, born in Australia, explains, “We always had large, open kitchens when I was growing up, and I wanted to create a similar sense of free-flowing space here, with room for entertaining and relaxing, rather than a kitchen that’s hidden away.” With a pile of pictures of they liked, Nick and Alisha contacted kitchen designer Neil Norton. “By that time, we had developed a clear idea of the look we wanted – something timeless to blend in with the classic style of the living area, the herringbone parquet floor and the age of the property,” explains Nick. While Neil began to develop plans for the painted cabinetry, with appliances sleekly hidden away to emphasise the “non-kitcheny” look of the design, Nick and Alisha chose furnishings for the rest of the room to echo the timeless mood, given personality with elements of industrial and eclectic style. “It’s a room with lots of warmth, that feels inviting whatever the time of day or night,” says Nick. “We love it.”

Q&A WITH DESIGNER NEIL NORTON CREATIVE DIRECTOR, NEIL NORTON DESIGN

worktop for a minimalist finish

How did you begin the design? Hand-crafted cabinetry with dovetailed joints and classic construction creates the timeless look that Nick and Alisha wanted, and the slim profile of the framed doors, dark, graphite grey painted finish and brushed nickel handles in two styles introduce a modern, eclectic edge. How did you create the layout? As this is a living space and kitchen combined, I looked at the overall space. To link the different areas of the room, the base cabinets “run on” either side of the fireplace. Nick particularly wanted an island, so this I designed a compact preparation zone, linked to a dining table, to fit the dimensions of the room. The long run of base cabinets is balanced by a “floating” shelf – wall cabinets would have looked heavy. And the main appliances are concealed in the tall cupboards, together with a pantry. The hob is also flush fitted for a minimalist finish, while the extraction is hidden in the ceiling. Can you tell us about the work surface? The Moon Rock granite is very robust, but has classic elegance similar to marble and its gentle grey tones contrast with the dark paint of the cabinetry. We used book-matched slabs of the granite, so that the joins in the very long splash back are disguised. Instead, your eyes focus on the dramatic veining of this beautiful natural stone. Kitchen profile Bespoke Classic framed cabinetry is hand painted on site in Railings by Farrow & Ball. MAISON VALENTINA BRINGING YOU THE HOTTEST BATHROOM DESIGN TRENDS FOR SUMMER 2018

With the change of season, most people will want to refresh their bathroom space and explore new trends and ideas. So this summer following this trends you will elevate your bathroom to the next level showing that the bathroom can be the trendiest and hottest space of the house.

49

ESCAPING TO THE SPA In an age when we are busier than ever, a spa-like bathroom is a necessity. In order to elevate your bathroom to a spa-like you will need muted lighting, deep soaking tubs, and lots of soft textures. After this transformation you will have a warm summer storm every time you step foot in the bathroom. Diamond bathtub is designed in fiberglass with a luxurious black high-gloss finishing. The diamond shaped sculptural body is based on its name, making it a exquisite item in any modern bathroom. This bathtub also presents a golden rim, a small detail that stands out.

50

JAPANESE CALM The new serenity trend is inspired by the Japanese notion of Zen. Traditional Japanese bathrooms are nothing short of a serene scenic journey into a misty rainforest. With attention to color, design, placement and utility, the Japanese really focus on creating a peaceful space that is useful yet pleasing. Soft brown, gold, white and smooth granite surfaces are all trends in modern Japanese bathroom design. The Koi bathtub features an aged brushed brass base resembling the scales pattern of the Japanese Koi carp. The contrived patina iron tub has an oval shape and a curved lip, making it the perfect resting spot for your head. The name of this contemporary bathtub and the Japanese word for love are homophones making the carp a symbol of love and affection.

52

THE RETURN OF COLOR Whites and neutrals will probably never go out of style in the bathroom, but try to introduce color and have some fun in the process. Blue color palettes are also on-trend this year. You will see since blackened to denim blues mixed with metallic hues. Newton is an outstanding moment of design inspiration. This bathtub features a single-slipper style shape, a timeless detail that conveys comfort. It has a distinctive curved lip, made out of gold plated casted iron, revealing a golden interior. The high-gloss black and gold lacquered spheres make the perfect combination to make this a sculptural and artistic piece.

53

DARKER TONES ARE HOT In a space known so long for its neutral whites and light wood stain colors, the dark shades are starting to conquer this space. This includes dark tile flooring, grey painted elegant cabinets, matte black plumbing fixtures and cabinet hardware and even dark painted accent walls. Though the trend is slow, darker tones are definitely here to stay. Newton is an organic shaped washbasin made out of casted aluminum spheres that merge to create a tabletop, providing a unique design approach to this bathroom decor piece. The spheres are finished with a high gloss black lacquer, contrasting with the cutted ones on the counter, finished in casted brass. It features an integrated round sink in polished brass for some golden accent. It is a true piece of art!

PRUDEN SMITH The Arts and Crafts village of Ditchling, nestled in the Sussex Downs 8 miles north of Brighton is full of surprises. At the centre of the village, in the building that once housed the Historic Ditchling Press, are the hidden workshops of Pruden and Smith. Pruden and Smith was founded in 1988 by fineart-trained designer Rebecca Smith, and Anton Pruden, grandson of the silversmith Dunstan Pruden, a member of The Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic founded by Eric Gill. Pruden and Smith draw on their wealth of experience, combining the very best of traditional craftsmanship with cutting edge technology to produce unique contemporary

LEISURE PLAN

ZAMAC exclusively from Leisure Plan by Ego Paris. A futuristic sunlounger in the style of a swing hammock – but more stable! A one-piece curved frame fixed to a ‘V’ shaped base forms a discreet support giving great stability, creating for the user, a feeling of floating in mid-air. The design exposes the whole structure so even en masse, the area around and under the ZAMAC is open, so avoiding the more solid look of traditional sunbeds.

The aluminium frame is available in 23 powder coated colours. Slings can be in either polyester mesh in 9 single colours plus 4 exclusive two-colour versions, or fabrics from the Ego Paris collections including ALCANTARA, an outdoor fabric with a distinctive modern abstract design. The same specifications apply to the AIR ZAMAC, with the base replaced by a high tensile wire cord for suspending from a suitable beam or tree. www.leisureplan.co.uk

Seamless Surfaces Achieved With Osmo Uk

5

With the famous spring clean season amongst us, professional decorator, JGDecorator was contracted to renovate and refresh a composite oak kitchen worktop and shelving area in a family home. Thanks to its hardwearing properties and aesthetically pleasing finish, Osmo UK Polyx®-Oil was the ideal choice to rejuvenate the high traffic surfaces. The kitchen has a classic countryside look to it, so the client requested a natural finish that wouldn’t distract from design of the room. Jonathan Graham, a partner in JGDecorator, recognised that the traditional oil-based finish that Osmo supplies would meet these requirements, while also providing a durable and protective finish that is essential in the kitchen.

Dioneadesign

The combination of ancient process of lost wax casting with the freedom to drawing 3d modeling led to the creation of this pendant made of yellow bronze. The complex geometry develops a form which is different in every single detail. Here the modernity of design blends with the classicism of matter in a timless shape which can be worn for any occasion. The pendant is made by sintering 3d printing technology: this process allow a very high level of detail and the bronze strength made possible an eternal jewel. I am Giorgia Iachizzi and the Designer of Dioneadesign jewels. My approach to designing started during School of Art. Later, working in a goldsmith's laboratory I learnt the process to create jewels through lost wax casting. I graduated in Industrial Design at "La Sapienza" University in Rome.

Kährs

7

Kährs have introduced a new timeless ‘French Pattern’ hard flooring design to their range of sustainable wood floors. The classic design features a modern twist - an engineered plank format which improves install time and efficiency in comparison to a traditional ‘French Pattern’ floor. Joining Kährs’ design-led European Renaissance collection, a collection of unique and inspiring wooden floors based on the magnificent floor styles of bygone periods, the new design is available in two luxurious tones - a golden brown ‘Castello Rovere’ and rich, smokey ‘Castello Fumo’ as shown. With a modern engineered format, the new designs can be installed more quickly than a traditional French patterned floor. The stunning pattern can also be specified over underfloor heating, due to the environmentally sound and long-lasting multi-layer construction of sustainable oak and poplar within the boards.
