WOKA LAMPS VIENNA is a Vienna-based

Manufacturer of Iconic 20th Century Lighting Design. Lovers of iconic lamps from the early 20th century were for decades deprived of the possibility of owning some of the most striking pieces by the Wiener Werkstätte and the Bauhaus, which had long fallen out of production. The designers whose work WOKA is licensed to produce read like a who’s who of the Vienna design pantheon. In addition to Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, the manufacturer has reissued striking table, ceiling, wall and floor lamps, as well as chandelier pieces, by the likes of Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner and Carl Witzmann. A collection of very rare antiques of the early 20th century as well as a large collection of chandeliers from the 18th century until the 1960s is completing the business of the

THE IMPACT OF LIGHT Although we may not realise it, light has a significant influence on many processes inside our bodies. It regulates the production of various hormones, for example, the sleep hormone melatonin, which ensures that we relax in the evening and ideally fall into a refreshing sleep. CHAMELEON DESIGNS A multi disciplinary studio, covering the areas of London, Kent, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, encompassing, interior designers, architects and professional trades. We produce individual solutions for residential and commercial environments, and by listening to, and anticipating your needs, our creativity will be balanced with a realistic approach. Our philosophy Is to always work with client, listen to what they are trying to achieve with the space and to not always think of the obvious solution. Sometimes doing something a little different can bring huge rewards. Creating a Social Kitchen The brief from the client was to create a sociable kitchen, combining the old kitchen with a separate dining room, creating a space for both cooking and entertaining, offering the perfect backdrop for relaxed living, particularly as the client enjoyed cooking and entertaining at the same time. Getting the format right, however, was not as simple as just providing a table and chairs. Logistical, this meant removing what is essence was the back wall of the house and opening up the space with an extension. The services of an Architect was involved as well as a party wall surveyor, as being a terraced house work impacted on the adjoining property.

19

The new space created, had high ceilings, but required zoning to create the right flow to make the room work effectively. One of the elements the client especially asked us to look at was the acoustics and layering of light. The client also felt they wanted something a little different in terms of the look of the new space, particularly the kitchen which shouldn’t all be in one finish. The L shaped design with a mixture of cabinetry, housing all the tall elements in one area was adopted. An island was created to provide both extra work surface but also a space for guests to sit and chat whilst the host was at work, and out of the way. Plus a very convenient breakfast bar.

UNVEILING 2018 INSPIRING COLOR Trends by Pantone

The big news that many of you were awaiting have finally arrived. Pantone, the authority on color, revealed the colors for 2018 that will bright your interiors. According to Pantone’s Executive Director, Mettalics are classic but they moved over into neutrals. To contrast with the pastel tones, Pantone also cited a movement of more intense and exotic colors. In fact, the pastel tones have gained great popularity over the last years. According to Pantone, Covet House highlights some incredible pieces from all 8 interior design brands that live up to this hot 8 Pantone’s colors.

VERDURE

29

This palette features vegetal kinds of colors like Celery and Foliage being combined with berry-infused purples and an eggshell blue. “This palette is so symbolic of health,” said Eiseman, but it updates the profusion of greens with some bright and contrasting hues. With this incredible green, BRABBU shows us Davis Armchair. This piece was named after the sea along the coast of East Antarctica, representing its colors and its ripple through the forms that convey movement.

RESOURCEFUL Complementary colors on the color wheel – oranges and blues – are combined in this palette that is clever and “resourceful” in re-using and re-furbishing what consumers may already own. In this way, BOCA DO LO BO highlights Heritage Nightstand. This piece is influenced by the tiles, a landmark in Portuguese culture. Originating from the Arabic word zellige, this traditional hand painted tile that can be found all over the country, from churches, to houses and gardens and was often used to tell tales of Portuguese history. With an orange option, RUG’SOCIETY enhances Neo Royal Rug. With its bold design and unusual graphics and patterns, will give comfort, elegance and class to your room. A 100% handmade product that transforms any division.

PLAYFUL

30

more than light-hearted” with names to match, like This palette is out-of-the ordinary and quirky. The colors are “bright-hearted” . Catching this motto, and with its peculiar pieces for Minion Yellow, Lime Popsicle, Green Flash and adventurous blue Skydiver Plane and children, CIRCU presents 2 wonderful pieces for the littles ones: Sky B . Sky One Plane. These pieces are inspired by Disney movie “Planes” transition With a creative and playful design, these two beds make the crib-tobed and ments as painless as possible. The decorative suitcases are storage compart clouds! allow the kid to climb up and down the airplane. Soar high above the of the sides both Some kids are born to fly! It has secret storage compartments on bottom wing and in the staircases. The top wing is a shelf.

DISCRETION

“Discretion” colors are the opposite of “Playful”. Nostalgic tones like Elderberry, Bleached Orange and Hawthorne Rose combine with strengthening tones to bring novelty to a subtle palette. These colors send us to ESSENTIAL HOME where we can find the regretful vintage colors. Take a look to this Armchair. Merely mention the name Carver and you feel the weight of such an innovator’s name. The combination of exotic material such as dark walnut wood and gold plated brass turns this armchair into a modern version of the 60’s keen. Its upholstery It may be in accordance with Essential Home textiles collection and it has a brass detail at the end of the feet. A retro design armchair that will keep you in touch with your inner bohemian.

31

FAR-FETCHED This palette is refreshingly and combines three popular rosy tones with Iced Coffee and Ruby Wine, as well as a few earthy tones such as Cornsilk yellow. Thinking on these three colors, KOKET present us Camilia sideboard. Designed passionately and exquisitely by the incomparable talents powering Koket, the Camilia was created to grace the regalest of dining rooms with its elegance and splendor. Inspired by the aristocratic palaces of the Alexandrian pashas of Egypt, the mother of pearl Camilia is crowned by artisan hand-carved peacock, meticulously engraved and delicately finished in gold leaf. Another piece that matches these colors is Mademoiselle Armoire. Designed with a profound admiration and influence of the French world in a crazy beautiful kind of way. The filigree metal butterfly doors are backed by decadent fabric and open to a metal leaf interior covered in a high-gloss varnish with 9 antique mirror drawers and 2 adjustable glass shelves.

INTIMACY This palette reflects the popularity of intricate designs. It features the “new neutrals,” aka metallic but a florid Holly Berry Red and yellow Sulfur add a layer of drama. In this way, DELIGHTFULL highlights two wonderful chandeliers: Sinatra Suspension Lamp and One Neon Lamp from Graphic Collection. Sinatra’s light fixture is simply Delightfull’s best design creation. A sculptural and versatile creation which is suitable for the most demanding setting. Its structure is handmade in brass and the lampshades in aluminum with the possibility of having 1 to 5 moveable arms. If you ever find yourself listening to “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra while drinking a cocktail, this piece will be there. To be the number one is easy as ever and it has Delightfull’s motto. Combine number one with another graphic letter and assist to the eclectic final result if the combination! The lamp with 15 bulbs (included), and the yellow color of aluminum achieves a chic effect.

32

INTENSITY Coolly composed shades of plum, blue and

blue-green quell the fires of orange Emberglow, Molten Lava and Bossa Nova. Golds and black complete the palette. Speaking about Golds and Black, LUXXU, brings us two new pieces: Empire Side Table inspired in Empire State Building adds a classic yet modern appeal to any space. Made with the highest quality of brass and nero marquina marble, this is ideal to create a spectacular and sophisticated living room, entrance or bedroom, and Beyond Console that shows the exquisite capacity to fill a variety of ambiances thanks to its luxury presence. The best handmade techniques find balance in a delicate work in wood softened with touches of brass that reflect warm and golden tones on its polished surface.

TECH-NIQUE Colors include a vibrant blue, green, fuchsia and purple, along with iridescent peacock tones in both turquoise and hot pink, which are offset by Brilliant White and Frosted Almond. Look at these amazing pieces that MAISON VALENTINA brings, to give you some great ideas to a luxury bathroom. According to the colors presented, the brand shows Lapiaz Freestand, The French word is the name given to the typical karst formations produced by surface dissolution of limestone or dolomite rocks. It can also be caused by freezing and thawing in cold climates. This is how Lapiaz luxury freestand washbasin emerged. Imagine a stone freezed and freshly cracked to show the entire world a rich, golden interior. The polished brass details and mirrored sides attribute this luxury design artwork an artic yet comfy and warm beauty. Definitely a statement piece for the most luxurious interior designs.

Nature enhanced, for unreal results. Every now and then, something comes along to knock an original off its pedestal. Welcome then to Millboard decking. Through continuous research and development, meticulous attention to detail, expertise and innovation we’ve created a board that’s hand-moulded from natural wood – and we think it could be better than the real thing. It won’t rot like real wood, warp like real wood or attract mould like real wood. It just takes the best of real wood and enhances it. Beautifully. Millboard: Live. Life. Outside.

A WORLD OF INNOVATION FOR A WORLD OF CHANGE Celebrating an impressive 32 years, kbb Birmingham, the UK’s largest and most established kitchen, bedroom and bathroom event, returns to the NEC, Birmingham from 4th – 7th March 2018. Following the success of last year’s theme, Future, kbb continues to forecast forthcoming trends and challenges facing the UK kbb community, identified by content partner, AMA research. Bringing you a world of innovation for a world of change. 1.

The four trends are:

2.

Society: Evolving customer behaviours alter the meaning of lifestyle design, e.g. DIY conscious early adopters outsource cutting edge design and smart space innovations fuelling the installer skills shortage

3. 4.

Smart technology: Be it future or fad, ‘smart’ is creating new possibilities for those on both sides of the debate, e.g. virtual reality transforms showroom buying behaviours and voice recognition modifies our use of space

5. 6.

Disruption as opportunity: ‘Disruptors’ change the construction landscape, heralding new design opportunities, e.g. uncertainty surrounding Brexit stimulates house price stagnation driving a growing refurbishment market fuelled by mature, equity-rich homeowners undertaking big ticket kitchen and bathroom projects

7. 8.

Materiality: UK consumers demand higher quality products and materials, e.g. worktops continue to dominate the kitchen furniture market driving innovation and diversification in the surfaces sector

The Innovation Awards, in partnership with blum, aim to discover brands that are producing products, methods and ideas to help shape the future of the industry. The award entries will be judged by an esteemed panel of judges including kbb’s Brand Director, Joel Butler - winners will be announced at the show. This year’s kbb Retail and Design conference will provide practical advice to grow businesses in a world of change. Combining topics such as; How to... survive a recession and come out stronger, How to… design the 4G bathroom, How to… keep up with the latest materials and colours, plus much more.

A RECENT PROJECT BY ESTHER TAYLOR DESIGN – INTERIOR DESIGN CONSULTANCY Esther Taylor shares her thoughts about a recent project recently completed in North West London. This home in North West London belongs to a large family with many grandchildren. My client bought this plot of land many years ago with the intention of embarking on a complete home make over. Following extensive planning and permissions, they were eventually ready to start the project. With only one child out of seven left living in the family home, we were tasked with creating a warm home for just the two of them as well as a home that is suitable for when the extended family decide to pop over all at once! The client wanted it to be grand but also a warm and inviting space. Website: www.esthertaylordesign.com / Instagram: www.instagram.com/esthertaylordesign

HOTELYMPIA 2018 The UK’s leading hospitality event returns to London in March (March 5-8, ExCeL London) with the introduction of four new, exciting and contemporary shows, united under one roof, as part of a fresh new identity. Each of the four new shows will be specialist events in themselves, benefitting from the ‘Hotelympia-effect’ – a market-leading brand with the heritage to attract over 30,000 visitors, many of whom possess six-figure spending muscle. In modernising its approach, a revitalised Hotelympia will reaffirm its position as the industry’s must-attend showcase event for every hospitality business. The Professional Kitchen Show The Professional Kitchen Show is set to offer 2018’s very first and most comprehensive view of everything new in catering equipment and kitchen design. Backed by key manufacturing and wholesale groups, it welcomes over 150 dedicated exhibitors to the show floor – the largest gathering of its kind in the UK. Over a dozen of the UK’s most exciting chefs including Dan Doherty, executive chef at 24-hour restaurant Duck and Waffle and Michelin star chef Paul Ainsworth, of Paul Ainsworth at Number 6 in Padstow, will also be in attendance, offering up interactive cooking demos on The Staff Canteen Live. Interiors and Tableware Show The Interiors and Tableware Show will offer visitors an array of innovative suppliers – including pioneering design houses and interior specialists – and experiential features backed by specially-commissioned insight. Hotelympia has partnered with SquareMeal, the market-leading independent restaurant guide, to help uncover what constitutes the Ultimate Dining Experience. The results will be brought to life in a unique experiential installation at the show with the help of property-based design, project management and development company, LXA.

61

The Foodservice Show incorporating Café Commerce In recent years the UK has rightly earned its place at the top table of global food and drink, and The Foodservice Show will celebrate the dynamism, diversity and depth of innovation within this market. As well as hosting key suppliers and artisan start-ups, the show will include a very special Café Commerce section, flooded with innovative coffee-focused suppliers. Hotelympia’s long history of nurturing the next generation will also continue in earnest at The Foodservice Show through International Salon Culinaire. Candidates are set to do battle in four competitive elements; La Parade de Chefs, Salon Display, Live Theatre and the student-focused Skills Theatre. Hospitality Tech Show With technology revolutionising the way we interact with food and food suppliers, the Hospitality Tech Show will champion the brightest, best new products and solutions emerging from hospitality tech players. A very special Hospitality Tech Innovation Theatre will be at the heart of proceedings. Through a number of insightful seminars, panel discussions and talks around key issues, the Innovation Theatre will demonstrate Hotelympia 2018 as a thought leader around the most pressing technological issues and challenges. Alongside the new brands, the show will benefit from some exciting new future-focused elements, tackling hot button issues and championing future industry stars, which will sit perfectly alongside returning features, to help Hotelympia maintain its position at the head of the pack. The show is also partnering with the British Hospitality Association (BHA) to lend support to its Cut Tourism VAT campaign – a drive to bring UK Tourism VAT into line with competitor destinations within the European Union. Anyone preregistering will be given the chance to opt in and have their say in supporting the campaign. To create the most beautiful buildings

Custom and Bespoke Self-Builders

Follow the Butterfly Around 20,000 people will build their own home in the UK this year. That’s less than 10 years ago, and a fraction of what are built in mainland Europe. In Austria for example 80% of people self-build. According to the Building Societies Association, 53% of UK people would consider building their own homes. Even more people add an annex, garage, or garden lodge. You could be one of them.

However, not all self-builders are the same. Nor do they have the same requirements. ‘Downsizers’ may want to contract the building work. ‘Up-sizers’ may want, or need, to do a lot of the work themselves. ‘Home-extenders’ often look for a mix of both. In almost all cases they want, need, and deserve highly knowledgeable professionals to advise and guide them on design, service

integration, material choice, build quality, durability, value and comfort. Whatever your needs, we’d like to help you. Our architects, engineers, timber technicians, skilled craftsmen have countless years’ experience designing, making and building homes, extensions and ancillary buildings for people like you. And in the process they’ve created some of the UK’s best known...

Gismos, Gadgets & Good Design IT & business innovations from beyond the housing sector

In the early ‘noughties’ I ran a seminar for ‘Constructing Excellence’ on ‘Safety by Design’, followed a few years later by one on ‘Designing Out Waste’. The purpose in mentioning them is to emphasise the fact that, despite new products and new and updated regulations, like those dealing with high speed electronic communications networks (Approved document ‘R’), the house-building industry has made little progress so far this century. Back then I argued for buildings to be designed via ‘partnerships’ that embraced site constraints, programmed out risk, and ensured good immediate and ongoing communications with present and future stakeholders. I pointed out that to do so required ‘design teams’ who not only knew their legal duties & responsibilities, but who understood how the job would be done. In turn this meant grasping the logistics, getting to grips with handling and ‘Temporary’ works, as well as embracing snagging and maintenance along with the lifetime risks of the building both in construction, in use and decommissioning. Stressing that ‘good design’ is SAFE I also urged participants to accept their responsibility for making others aware of all of these risks.

the construction industry. Techniques and disciplines like ‘Six Sigma’ and ‘Kaizen’ were applied across the whole design and build process to cut out waste in design time, scheduling delays, and prototyping errors, as well as material waste, etc. Once again an important element of this was the acceptance that building design needed to become a collaborative exercise, rather than the God given domain of any one person. As in the motor, aircraft and ship building industries, for example, recognition of the increasingly complex nature of the building enterprise was seen as increasingly important.

Professor Dr Michael Benfield

Designing with partnering in mind emphasises communications, the importance of avoiding delays, and the need to programme out errors. It also recognises the need to really know what stocks & other ‘industry standard’ materials are readily available, how jobs will be done in practice, and the need for a better and fuller understanding of the building and manufacturing tasks involved. Grasping the totality of the logistics involved was seen then, and remains today, of major importance. Getting to grips with transport, ‘Right First Time’ and ‘Continuous Improvement’ processes were and are obvious candidates for expanding the horizons of the design team. Equating the notion of ‘Lifetime Costs’ with the avoidance of delays and the need to programme out errors, along with a sound knowledge of materials, processes and procedures remains vital. Although accepting that good design avoids waste, then and now many ‘professionals’ used to a more relaxed regime - found and find this an unpopular constraint. Few, it seems are ready even now to accept responsibility for, and bear the cost of, any waste caused by them.

While today it’s pretty easy to specify IT related products for any building, like visual or fingerprint recognition access, remote video surveillance, cell-phone heat and light control, and so on, doing so efficiently remains a major challenge. Indeed, arguably this is more important than these ‘nice to have’ gismos and gadgets themselves. Home buyers and renters alike remain more concerned about the cost and speed efficiency of new home construction, their comfort, running, and maintenance costs. In several respects ‘Designing Out Waste’ was an extension of the earlier attempt to introduce business innovations from outside

01291 437050

As we move further toward ‘factory built’ Homes, clients and their professional advisors and consultants must understand that, to produce a building in the factory, requires all elements to be determined in detail before work commences, rather than muddling through trying to resolve complicated design issues as a project progresses. While this is possible using sloppy ‘wet’ trade building techniques, where adjustments can be made in-situ, complex off-site manufactured elements are much more difficult to alter. Failure to understand this is both prejudicing MMC and costing clients and builders’ small fortunes to correct. Partnering for the whole design,

supply and construction chain is a vital process that must be developed to correct this. Consequently, whilst moving with the times to incorporate all that is best and wonderful and time saving and comfortable, and desirable, in any building design we undertake, manufacture, or build, I still find myself ‘shouting at the wind’ for fundamental shifts in professional attitudes. However, the ‘winds of change’ are blowing and I do detect small shifts. As construction moves ‘off-site’ into the factory these will greatly improve efficiency, quality, and affordable delivery of all levels of social and private housing. Michael Benfield 2017

Prof. Dr. Michael Benfield is a Chartered Environmentalist. He predicts that current pressures for more housing will increase demand for OffSite Production and MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) leading to new standards of professional capability, project design and the development of new management tools for the housebuilding and construction sector. Listing Chartered Builder, Chartered Surveyor and Chartered Manager amongst his credentials, he is an Affiliate of the RIBA and chairs leading UK timber engineers Benfield ATT. Based in Caldicot, Monmouthshire, they are a ‘full service’ timber Design and Build group using 3D design as a key efficiency tool.

stablished 33 years ago in October 1982, Touch Ironmongery is one of London’s leading ironmongers. Originally called “A Touch of Brass”, the firm changed their name in 2003 in reaction to slowly advancing market changes in architectural ironmongery which is no longer supplied solely in brass, and to also reflect the broader range of products and finishes that they sell. In fact today, Touch can supply a wide range of finishes including Brass, Satin Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Copper, Bronze -solid and plated, BMA, Antique Brass, Black, Pewter, Ceramic, Leather, Stainless Steel, Satin Stainless Steel, Gun Metal, and the list keeps growing. Whatever finish you require, Touch can help you get the right look. Touch occupy their recently refurbished showroom at 210 Fulham Road, Chelsea, where they display a vast range of their 5,000 products. With a customer base including Interior Designers, Builders and individuals who are interested in the top end of the Ironmongery

market, Touch mainly supply to residential premises but hotel and office properties also contribute to their vast clientele. The company also have a healthy export market to all corners of the world, namely the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Touch’s owner and founder, Bill Benham, has 33 years’ experience in the ironmongery trade, as do his colleagues Jim Haselup and Alan Blanchard. Saleem Qureshi is the newest member of our team and has 10 years’ experience, meaning their knowledge is unrivalled in this industry. The range of products supplied by Touch date from circa 1640 French (Louise XIV) and cover all subsequent periods (Georgian, Edwardian & Victorian), art deco and contemporary pieces also make up the product ranges. In addition, Touch showcases the very best of British manufacturing; the best ranges are still produced in the Midlands by craftsmen in factories dating back 200 years or more. Touch also sell European manufactured goods which is considered to be of a very good quality and in recent years they have introduced some of the far

eastern made products, albeit in a limited range but cost effective. With trends continuously evolving, new innovative products are constantly under development. Touch understand that keeping up with the fashion-shifts is imperative in order to provide every customer with the best solution for their requirements. Ironmongery can be a difficult and complicated aspect of a building project, as a result Touch aim to take this awkward aspect and make it user friendly and clear to understand by offering an on-site service where they carry out a detailed door by door, window by window, room by room Ironmongery schedule, highlighting all requirements and identifying any items that can be refurbished. Refurbishment is a large part of the business; Touch will undertake complete ironmongery refurbishment projects, and can restore old paint covered door furniture to their former glory, looking as new, at a fraction of the cost to replace.

The recycling trend has spread firmly from the home to the work environment with more companies sourcing products with a sustainable pedigree. Paul Mann, Sales Director of Penketh Group, said: “We are seeing an increasing number of customers interested in well-designed and sustainable products that incorporate elements of recycling, upcycling and re-using. “There are an incredible array of products on the market today including chairs that can be completely recycled, stunning fabrics with strong eco credentials and even acoustic lamps made from recycled felt. “We see many different trends but the emphasis today is on creating spaces that encourage productivity amongst employees, promote wellbeing, and that also care for the environment.” The company has recently worked with leading Interior Designers SpaceInvader to provide furniture for engineering consultants Hilson Moran to meet the WELL Building Standard. Sustainable Tub Chair: Nomique’s Moka Felt is a unique sustainable tub chair which gives waste a second life. The self-supporting seat shell is made from 60 recycled PET bottles. The choice to use this innovative material is not only good for the environment, but it also looks and feels great. An additional positive feature is its sound absorbing quality. The tub chair is available in light and dark grey felt and fitted with a seat pad. Environmentally Responsible Chair: The Axia fully circular chair from Nomique uses a high volume (up to 65%) of recycled or re-used material. Its parts and seat cushions can also be easily replaced to prolong its life. As well as supporting the user and the environment, this chair boats 0% CO2 emissions during use. At the end of its life, the manufacturer offers a buy back scheme where the chair can be returned to the factory and its parts re-used or recycled. Design that lasts: The Ensemble is a long lasting and durable task chair which offers a sustainable solution for any workplace. With its minimum use of virgin material, and modern and beautiful design, this is a chair that can be sent back to source for 100% recycling to make new chairs. Fibre chairs: The Four®Me Wood Armchair is an elegant and tactile shell chair which brings a touch of the home into the workspace. The surface of each shell chair consists of a bio-polypropylene material enforced with wood fibres visible to the eyes and hands, making each chair unique. BRIO PUTS A CURVE IN IT Brio architectural hardware made an adventurous curved door project a reality for an innovative wedding venue in north Devon.

Tunnels Beaches is a network of hand carved tunnels leading to sheltered beaches and a tidal Victorian bathing pool at Ilfracombe, the location of a breath-taking beach front wedding venue operated by Devon Beach Weddings. The bespoke building curving out of the rock means there are no concerns about the UK weather and whatever turn it takes it is all visible through curved bi-folding glazed doors – whether opened or closed. The owner had the idea to refurbish and at the same time to extend the upper story of the curved building by 2 metres, installing curved bi-folding glazed doors and thereby increasing capacity from 130 guests to 160. With a full house for weddings in 2017, (120+ weddings booked), over 100 weddings already booked for 2018 and prime dates in 2019 booking fast, the extension was a must. Awlwood Joinery already had a good relationship with the owners Jamie and Zoe McLintock having worked with them at the Tunnels Beaches Bath House – an old Victorian bath house – which was turned in to wedding accommodation for the venues guests, so when the scheme was mooted to install curving bi-folding doors the McLintock’s turned to David Wray at Awlwood Joinery. “It wasn’t anything we had done before but we are skilled guys and the concept is not beyond the reach of man – after all we can send men to the moon – so

we undertook the commission. The architect, RGP of Barnstaple, came up with a scheme and we did as they instructed – but with fewer doors (two sets, opening out). The design included wood cladding and lots of steel. “We opted for the Brio Weatherfold 4s system after talking to Bob Harrison at Hebden &

but it is well worth the investment for the huge improvement and simplified operation and it looks so much better. Brio’s 286 Dual Point Lock system launched last year has been joined by Brio’s 288 Lever Furniture to give joiners a deluxe option to offer their customers who now, more than ever, are looking for aesthetics as well as practicality. Brio’s 286 Dual Point Lock is suitable for Brio’s tough exterior folding system Weatherfold 4s with timber or aluminium panels and for single hinge panels, such as French doors, up to 3.5 metres high, offering an alternative to the standard flushbolts. It is both ultra secure and aesthetically pleasing. Rather than having the standard flushbolt at the top and the bottom of the door system on the inside of the property the end user can now choose a more sophisticated finish with the 288 lever handle readily accessible in the central part of the door so there is no reaching up or bending down to operate bolts.

“I am also impressed with Brio R&D – they are always coming up with new ideas and fixes. Best on the market. The solutions are effective and the Brio representatives are helpful and thoughtful – that’s a one-off!”

Holding architectural ironmonger and the Brio team which takes panels up to 1 metre wide. The decision was led by the architect’ plans and the constraints of the timber as you cannot have huge pieces of curved timber so we had to make up the doors from smaller pieces that would eventually be bolted together on site. The actual frame was put together by the owner’s site carpenters.” David Wray says: “I am very pleased with the results especially with Brio’s new dual point locking mechanism. Most bi-folding doors are locked top and bottom which means reaching up and bending down to operate. The new Brio system is a finger locking mechanism. I am so impressed with it I am using it on all jobs. It may be more expensive

According to David Newton, General Manager UK at Brio, the demand for bi-folding and sliding exterior and interior doors is set to continue apace, with a variety of aesthetic demands from delicate ‘floating’ glass systems to commercial style projects such as this example in North Devon. “What this means in practice is that Brio, with its range of product and flexible attitude, will continue to keep pace with the architect’s need for innovative product that can transform anything they design on paper into reality,” he says. Herman Miller When Aeron debuted in 1994 it was a chair unlike any the world had ever seen. It didn’t just change how people sat, but what they thought a chair could be. In doing so, it became the best-selling and most recognizable chair of all time—transcending the world of design, becoming a vital tool for millions of workers, and attaining a place in popular culture. But the office of 1994 would be largely unrecognizable today. With all the changes that have occurred, it only made sense that Aeron should also change to better meet the needs of today’s work and workers. So how did we improve one of the most iconic and beloved chairs in the world? We recruited co-designer Don Chadwick to re-examine the design criteria that led him and Bill Stumpf to Aeron. Based on today’s world of work, our

latest understanding of anthropometrics and ergonomics, and advancements in materials, manufacturing and technology, we asked if there were pertinent improvements to be made to Aeron’s health positive, cross - performance, inclusive, and environmentally-sensitive design — without diminishing the characteristics that made it an icon. With the new chair, we incorporated two decades’ worth of technological and ergonomic enhancements to improve the health - positive design, and widen the range of cross - performance capabilities. With updates that include a more refined tilt mechanism, adjustable PostureFit SL, and 8Z Pellicle suspension, the new Aeron performs better than ever before — so you can too. www.hermanmiller.co.uk

Knightsbridge Luxury Property Agency

Knightsbridge Estate Agents are an award-winning specialist luxury property agency providing professional and pro-active consultancy for highend property located in Prime Central London. This fast growing Estate Agency is led by Managing Director Raj Gill who is optimistic and enthusiastic about the central London property market, despite statistics showing a slowdown in residential sales & lettings in this area of London. He believes his boutique luxury property agency is reaping the success of the high quality personable service they provide combined with their ability to source extremely high-net worth buyers and tenants, which gives Knightsbridge Estate Agents the edge over their competitors. The majority of the Agency's clientele are based in countries such as China, Russia, India, Qatar, UAE, Malaysia and Singapore. We think out of the box and work tirelessly on each instruction; providing regular reports & analysis of market behaviors to our clients.

The agency of today has to be much more proactive due to the ever changing political and financial factors.' We believe an Agent should be realistic and honest with their Landlords, Vendors, Buyers and Investors. We pride ourselves on building great relationships with each and every client; a relationship built on trust, where we can be relied upon to obtain the best outcome. The Brexit vote and the uncertainty in financial markets since had led to the weakening of the Pound Sterling, which in turn has led to an increase in purchaser enquires on sales properties in Prime Central London, despite the high stamp duty tax rates, and changes in Capital Gains Tax. Due to Knightsbridge's ability to not only find the highest quality tenants, but also achieving the asking price on 85% of their Rental Properties listed, they have seen an influx of rental property instructions from local Landlords. www.knightsbridge.uk.com

Mayfair Oscar Wilde, was a connoisseur of elegance. And in fact he lived in Mayfair, one of the finest districts of London, which still houses restaurants and trendy shops, art galleries and luxurious residences. To give an idea of the kingship of this London district, it is worth remembering here that Queen Elizabeth II was born and lived during the first years of life. At that setting and in that atmosphere is inspired by the collection “Mayfair” Pot à Porter. Vases with soft shapes, soft colors, unobtrusive elegance, capable of giving an inimitable tone dwelling that houses them because really unique and exclusive: considered the manual production process, no one is equal to another. For those who love the British taste, these are pieces of artistic craftsmanship not to be missed.

now, where beauty and elegance is showing great prominence. If you are thinking of indulging in any of the distinctive By Stolie range, it might be worth noting her very own favourite piece – the choker necklace. You can hear the love that she feels for the item in her voice as she reveals its significance to her: “It was quite difficult to create something beautiful, elegant and at the same time different to other chokers. However, we worked tirelessly to create this beautiful design, with great care to every detail.” Its signature geometric pattern draws on symbols of ancient cultures. More comfortable than you would expect from such an alluring piece, it looks from afar like a strip of gold but is actually interlaced with colourless diamonds that have been cut to match the complex geometry. The flexibility of the choker also makes it a great choice to wear with an evening dress with plunging neckline or even a futuristic jumpsuit, Stolie informs us. Just before she rushes off to the next appointment in her busy schedule, we asked her to extend any final piece of advice for any blossoming designers looking to follow in her footsteps: “I am still fairly new to this myself but my best piece of advice would be to stay patient on your way to success.” Ilona Stolie’s own patience has clearly paid off well.

ROCKING WITH ROQAYA Roqaya’s Rocks Launches Ocean-Inspired Jewellery Collection Jewellery designer Roqaya Al Ahmad has launched her first international collection, inspired by the colours and movement of the oceans, under brand name Roqaya’s Rocks. Crafted using unique gems, crystals and pearls, each piece has been influenced by Roqaya’s travels, aesthetic sense and a passion for design which stems from her childhood. Roqaya, who is from Kuwait, majored in English Language before going on to study Interior Design and then Business Management and Economics. After more than 15 years in the corporate world, between the oil and banking sectors in Kuwait City, she finally decided the time was right to follow her dreams by focusing on her true calling as a jewellery designer. Now one of the most exciting new jewellery designers to enter the international jewellery market, she has been creating stunning pieces for five years, after gaining a host of celebrity fans in Kuwait, but this is the first collection she has launched outside of her home country.

Yellow Cluster Earrings (Small), Silver with Gold Plate & American Diamonds - £188

She credits her extensive travels in childhood and as an adult as the inspiration behind her most ambitious collection to take. Roqaya says: “Inspiration struck when I was looking out at sea in Santorini, Greece. The extremely calm water with small rock islands and the soft drizzle of rain immediately transformed in my imagination into a necklace and matching earrings using pyrite stones and mini cultured pearls. Called Raindrops on the Rocks, that set is now part of my new collection. “Thailand has also been a huge influence; the magical underwater of Phuket’s gulf, the coloured corals, dancing reef and amazingly diversified little fish. Also, looking out at the clouds from my airplane seat as I travel. Some people see just the clouds, or cotton wool. I see earrings, or a choker!” Roqaya, the only girl among four older brothers, has been designing as long as she can remember. She adds: “My very first attempts were when I was little when I would create clothes for my dolls from fabric. That led to sketching fashion designs and later on into creating unique pieces of jewellery using nature’s magical stones and rocks in all shapes and colours.” Roqaya’s Rocks is now available from the House of Luxury (TheHouseofLuxury.com), priced from £150 to £700. HIGH JEWELLERY IMPRESSOS ‘HARAKH’ INTRODUCE SYMBOLISTIC DIAMOND PEACOCK COLLECTION Written by: Patricia Bateman

127

Precious jewellery is so much more than just an accessory. It is a part of the family heirloom, tied in tradition and other deeply significant events of a person’s life. What ultimately make these precious jewels truly invaluable are the emotions and memories engraved within it.

Right - dangling pendant

This is the same spirit in which the Peacock Collection has been conceptualised and created by Harakh. The motif of a dancing peacock is a clearly etched into the psyche of people, but there is so much more rich symbolism distinctive to the national bird of India. Peacocks are like a celestial vision, bringing a sense of joy to our lives. They bestow a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation for the beauty of God’s creations. The iridescent plumage of the peacock and its graceful gait has been, and continues to be a source of inspiration for innumerable poets, designers and artists.

HARAKH Peacock Collection has been crafted to reflect the dance and vibrancy of their gorgeous feathers. Harakh Mehta, Founder of Harakh says, “I come from a large community of diamond merchants and jewellers, who have their origins in Gujarat and Rajasthan. While growing up, I remember our many visits to these regions on family gatherings and festival holidays which would give us a chance for visit the beautiful countryside. It was quite a treat for a city boy like me especially in the monsoons complete with the peacocks and the vibrant rain dances that I would still love to escape to”. Harakh continues, “Whenever I need to lift my spirits, all I have to do is to think of a peacock in its full bloom. It’s not just the vibrant colours of its beautiful feathers that instantly transform my mood or its graceful gait that personifies charm and nobility – it’s something much deeper. To me, the peacock is a manifestation of the power of integrity and honesty, and the beauty we can achieve from within when we show our true colours”.
