WOKA LAMPS VIENNA is a Vienna-based

Manufacturer of Iconic 20th Century Lighting Design. Lovers of iconic lamps from the early 20th century were for decades deprived of the possibility of owning some of the most striking pieces by the Wiener Werkstätte and the Bauhaus, which had long fallen out of production. The designers whose work WOKA is licensed to produce read like a who’s who of the Vienna design pantheon. In addition to Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, the manufacturer has reissued striking table, ceiling, wall and floor lamps, as well as chandelier pieces, by the likes of Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner and Carl Witzmann. A collection of very rare antiques of the early 20th century as well as a large collection of chandeliers from the 18th century until the 1960s is completing the business of the

WORDS: KNOF Design

Penthouse on the Park KNOF Design

KNOF design (based in London and founded by New York designer Susan Knof) has completed its first major commission: the remodelling of a spectacular 360° penthouse in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, uniting two separate apartments into a single 3,600 sq ft space. The new, one-storey penthouse features floor-to-ceiling glazing all the way round and offers its owners incredible panoramic views over the city and adjacent mountains with all the benefits of continuous natural light, from sunrise through to sunset.

‘Our clients – an international family of four – purchased the flats in a prominent high rise in the city’, commented Susan Knof, Creative Director and Founder of KNOF design, ‘and briefed us to combine the apartments to create a single, luxurious, bright and open environment, which would make the best use of the incoming light at different times of the day, but which would also allow them to control the degree of privacy they wanted at particular times or for particular spaces.’ The light-privacy balance in the penthouse was achieved by fitting soft voiles all the way around the 360° glazing, as well as black-out blinds, so that the owners have the choice of completely open living; light-filled but private living using the voiles or else blocking the light out completely – perfect for watching movies for example.

23

‘Making the most of the light throughout the day also meant the interiors scheme was predominantly created in natural and light colours’ added Susan Knof, ‘from the pale-wash of the timber flooring to the pure white of the kitchen. To ensure the apartment had personality accents, strong and punchy colour was also introduced, especially for the children’s bedrooms and playroom and the scheme’s stunning ensuites in purple and green mosaic.’ The Brief The brief from the client was to merge two existing properties (an east and west apartment) to create a single, open living environment that allowed for an unobstructed kitchen, dining, living and entertaining space, where full advantage could be taken of the views, whilst also providing private areas for the master bedroom and children’s areas. Interior Design Language ‘On entering the apartment, the language of the interior scheme is immediately apparent’, commented Susan Knof. ‘The elegant, yet subdued, use of soft natural materials greets you in the primary entrance hall.

As you proceed past the natural-dyed, grey-veneered walls, the open space is subtle and sophisticated and allows the gorgeous mountainous natural environment beyond to take centre stage.’ Architectural Challenges From an interior architectural standpoint, the main challenge of the project was the original planning of the overall building – especially the existing plumbing stacks, which allowed little possibility for exploration of different bathroom locations and the new design very much had to work around that. Structurally, there were also given core walls that had to remain in place. In addition, the full height windows also offered limited space for new ceiling and lighting logistics, and, most restrictive of all, the M&E services were planned along the perimeter full height glazing walls, seemingly blocking the views and the implementation of sheer or black-out curtaining. This was overcome by re-coordinating the mechanical layouts and plans, so that the air handling units were brought inside the internal core walls and concealed in custom joinery units.

‘A very important aspect of this scheme’, Susan Knof explained, ‘was using materials in such a way as to allow for individuality whilst still adhering to the client’s budget. I always seek to make use of every available space and have beautifully-integrated furniture with a real attention to detail. It’s what really makes the difference. The small intimate spaces that get used on a daily basis do not go unnoticed. It’s my intention to make the user feel special every time the apartment is in use.’

24

Design Walk-Through The entrance hall features gentle grey-toned marble flooring with subtle and beautiful natural striations. There are full-height, natural-dyed, grey veneered walls which wrap the existing building core, plus a new, flush, integrated and linear bespoke lighting detail which demarcates the space as you step beyond to enter the grand, light-filled main space. The main open kitchen, dining, entertaining and living area features a consistent and elegant approach with the external environment providing colour, light and drama. The kitchen is from the sleek contemporary white Molteni Dada Trim range with custom detailing, along with an acid-etched backsplash, which is fully operable, allowing for concealed kitchen storage. Adjacent to the kitchen is an open dining area with table seating for ten. A dramatic custom sculptural lighting piece (called ‘Match’) above the table, by Vibia, adds subtle drama to the space and allows for spot lighting across the full dining surface.

Alongside the main dining table is a white piano, which was purchased by the mother of the family both for her own use and for the lessons for the children for their lessons. The entrance walls run alongside, containing not only the concealed air handling units, but also featuring large-scale mirrors to reflect the natural landscape so that the views and light can be enjoyed in no matter where on is sitting. Two elegant and Japanese-influenced Miyabi console tables sit below the mirrors and are from Interius arredamenti. Next to the piano comes a flexible seating area comprised of two, contemporary, wenge-stained oak open-backed chairs with custom zebra print fabric from Dedar and two incidental tables - a black and a white Skandium ripple table – which add contrast to the overall soft, grey-toned environment. The main living area has two custom upholstered B + B Italia sofas with a dark grey velvet accent piping detail.

25

The seating area is grounded with two large-scale tables with integrated ottomans in custom metallic embossed leather by Moore and Giles. A three-dimensional custom lighting configuration directly above (the Link light, again by Vibia) provides a sculptural element, giving soft diffused light to the overall area, whilst custom cushions by KNOF design(using fabric by Weitzner) add colour and texture. The television and apartment’s state-of-the-art audio-visual system are integrated into the bespoke, full-height joinery (by KNOF design) in a subtle reuse of the dyed grey veneer. Soft voile ‘Meander’ curtaining by Weitzner is located along the full perimeter to add a soft elegant effect and diffused light. Located off of the main living area are the master bedroom and study spaces. The circulation area leading to the master suite is a continuation of the natural dyed grey timber veneered panels with storage behind. An existing overhead structural beam is received by an open shelving detail incorporating varying toned dyed natural veneers in natural dyed pink, bird’s eye maple, grey walnut, eucalyptus and natural Tay (koto).

In the master bedroom, the fabrics and finishes continue in the same soothing grey and natural cream tones with soft textural details and an added bright coral accent. An exquisite fully-bespoke vanity, wardrobe, and media unit is the highlight of the space. The existing core walls came into play here and so it was important for the joinery to work around and with this given constraint.

The bespoke-designed unit by KNOF design features a built in vanity with a white quartzite work surface and small, individually-sized storage drawers in varying toned dyed veneers, all with brushed satin stainless handles with grey leather inlay by Holland and Sherry. The backdrop to the vanity is a carefully-laid, textural, ikat-printed wall covering with a large scale, centrallyplaced, bronze-embossed framed mirror by Porta Romana. A bright plush velvet coral chair offsets the soft tones. Another notable detail in the master bedroom is the custom-designed, fullyupholstered soft grey nova suede headboard by KNOF design with an abstract, criss-cross, deep nailing pattern, picking up on the crossed legs of the Poliform white, mattelacquered side tables. Full-length, flowing voiles and curtaining by Weitzner provides the expected level of luxury, with an overall feel of understated sophistication. The shared open master walk-in wardrobe is located off the master bedroom and provides direct access to the individual his-and-hers ensuites.

‘As the kitchen is part of the overall open living plan’ Susan Knof explained, ‘it was essential for it to be both aesthetically-pleasing and functional and the chosen solution therefore allows for clean living at the slide of a panel.

It is a subtle, elegant space with open wardrobes anchored by a centrally-located pendant light with a bespoke joinery unit below. The small storage joinery unit is made of a white satin matte lacquer finish with inlaid leather top and brushed satin stainless handles, again by Holland and Sherry. ‘His’ master ensuite is fully-tiled in custom-cut, small, rectilinear natural limestone tiles. A surface-mounted basin rests on top of a custom vanity with a honed quartzite top, a dyed timber drawer front and open stone shelf below. ‘Her’ ensuite is a glamorous space with all walls clad in a soft pink rosa egeo marble with bright white Thassos marble stone flooring. Inset opal white marble stone shelves provide some open towel and display storage, whilst a large-scale bowl shaped basin sits on a white quilted front lacquered vanity. Joinery in the study is by Molteni and C and is crisp and contemporary with a full height charcoal glass sliding wardrobe door. There is a combination of open and closed storage, along with an open TV and an integrated desk, which can be easily closed off. The dark joinery is offset by an exquisite two-tone textured wall covering in a mid-toned grey finish.

The ensuite has a newly-integrated, full-height, acid-etched glass fixed panel, allowing passive light into the internal space. All ensuite walls are clad in metallic copper penny round mosaics by Ann Sacks with a custom white carrera marble vanity with a mitered drawer front and dark grey timber veneer shelf below. As in the main reception room, the nature of this space is multifunctional, aligned with the client’s wishes. On the alternate side of the plan sit the guest toilet and children’s rooms. The guest toilet is neatly tucked into the circulation and continues the soft grey cream and soft pink colour palette. Sleek Boffi tapware adds to the clean modern layout. The main wall is fully clad in a subtle patchwork of varying tonal porcelain patterned tiles by Patricia Urquiola. A textured round bronzed mirror and decorative branch shaped wall sconce add to the gently organic feel of the room. The two children’s rooms offer bright, colourful, and youthful interiors with a variety of specialty details allowing for creative and individual spaces. The bedroom along the south façade uses a medley of greens, yellows, and purple tones with small-scale patterning. The other bedroom and ensuite feature soft pinks and peaches with a pearlised floral wall covering and built-in joinery. The ensuite here is a brightly-coloured and well-lit space with full-height walls covered in glass mosaics that transition from dark to soft pink in a gradient manner. Like its sister bathroom, it features a custom vanity mirror which is playful, painterly and back-etched.

The children’s TV lounge area is located in the southwest corner with a custom, full-height media and storage unit by Molteni and C. At the end of the unit is an integrated, acid-etched glass panel, which connects back to the adjacent kitchen. A soft grey corner ‘tufty time’ sofa by B + B Italia rests on a brightly coloured custom-designed wool rug byKNOF design, which adds to the relaxed and playful vibe. Susan Knof summed up the project by saying ‘Above all, this penthouse scheme fulfils the client’s brief, providing a home with clever planning and an astute awareness of detail. But, more than that, the quality of the finishes, the balanced palette, the customised furnishings and an overriding commitment to considered design fuse together and culminate in a sophisticated and harmonious contemporary luxury penthouse.’ www.knofdesign.com Interior Architecture and Design: KNOF design | Susan Knof Photography: Assen Emilov

Rabih Geha Architects WORDS: Rabih Geha

PHOTOS: Rabih Geha

Rabih Geha Architects is a team of architects and designers working to create spaces that inspire. Based in Beirut, Rabih Geha is an architect with an artist’s vision and a Magicians skill. After graduating with a B.A. in architecture from The American University of Beirut (AUB), he traveled to Paris, where he earned a master’s degree in architecture from the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle (ENSCI). In 2006, he returned to Lebanon to open his own practice, Rabih Geha Architects. The in-demand design firm represents a young generation of architects breaking tradition in favour of a new approach.

Setting aside the scale, building type and proposed materials, Geha first considers the story of every project; he then determines an authentic way to tell it. Nothing is off limits; he has woven extraordinary architectural tales using everything from a whale skeleton to a microscopic virus as inspiration. Each project, whether it is a sleek urban residence or an intimate villa-turned-bar, has an individual identity based on its particular context and purpose.

39

A welcome byproduct of Geha’s approach, is the transformation of the nightlife scene in Beirut. Renowned for his work on restaurant and bar projects, his concept for Off&On, a glamorous speakeasy hidden behind the wall of an old-fashioned barbershop, changed the game in 2015. The success of the club led to his work on Uberhaus, today an international destination for electronic music fans. Designs for bar and restaurant 40 Kong as well as other venues are currently in the works. By 2017, Geha will have established a nightlife circuit; from rooftop cocktail bars to speakeasy venues. When he is not at the office or on site, the architect is often in his studio at l'AcadÊmie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (ALBA). In 2006, he launched an experiment-driven and research-oriented workshop to challenge interior architecture and design majors.

Led by Rabih Geha, the team works on a portfolio of projects that include architecture, interiors, product design and experimental installations. From residential and retail to commercial and recreational spaces, the studio’s founding philosophy begins with context. Each design, prompted by the environment it lives in, absorbs the surrounding physical, social and aesthetic elements to result in spaces that are never dictated by trend or style, but rather built with meaning, relevance and most importantly passion. www.rabihgeha.com

The English House range is that rare thing in light fittings – stylish, but without imposing a “style on the room or the building. Designed with a classical simplicity, the lights are equally at home in every period of building from Tudor manor to minimalist modern studio, and from intimate sitting room to large public space. They are the creation of Charles Morris, a designer with a national reputation for country houses and the best in domestic architecture. Like his buildings, these light fittings have been designed to combine the best qualities of traditional form and materials with a subtle contemporary touch.

Herman Miller Reveals Global Workplace Trends And New Product Introductions At Neocon 2016 WORDS: Herman Miller

PHOTOS: Herman Miller

Company’s research identifies six key shifts in progressive workplaces; records increases in engagement and innovation in Living Office environments At NeoCon 2016, Herman Miller is sharing new insights into how people work, and the significant changes in the way spaces are being planned to support them. As the floorplate continues to shift towards settings beyond individual workstations, Herman Miller has identified six distinct ways that progressive organizations and their design partners are planning space differently–with greater variety, more opportunities for interaction, and a smarter use of resources. Herman Miller’s Living Office, the company’s holistic offering of knowledge, tools, products, and services designed to help people envision and realize higher performing environments, provides the framework to leverage these trends toward more purposeful and varied settings. The company’s research also reveals that companies that have developed Living Offices are seeing measurable results, with greater efficiency, productivity, and innovation. Herman Miller has applied these findings to product development, and the resulting introductions at NeoCon 2016 offer versatility and support for a range of activities across a workplace landscape. Twenty months ago, Herman Miller researchers set out to gather meaningful data about how workplace design is evolving. As every organization implements agile and collaborative work practices in their own unique way, typical benchmarking units such as square feet per workstation or workstations per person would not be useful to customers or design professionals. To take an informative snapshot of changing office metrics, Herman Miller researchers analyzed the workplace landscapes of 120 progressive organizations

49

around the world, from start-ups to enterprises, in a wide range of industries, from financial, insurance, and energy, to not-for-profit, media, and technology. By analyzing 70 distinct data points from each floorplan, Herman Miller has identified six trends in how organizations and their design partners are using Living Office placemaking strategies to support new ways of working: • Assigned seats are being replaced with flexible workpoints: As portable technology allows people to work anywhere, at any time, assigned workstations are unoccupied for up to 60 percent of the day. While traditional floorplans show 97% assigned workstations, progressive workplaces have an average of 41% unassigned work-points. • Standard conference rooms are being replaced with multiple group space types: Groups engage in a variety of collaborative activities throughout the day, and workplaces that only offer conference rooms do not support all of them. Progressive flooplans show an average of six types of group settings, versus one in traditional workplace plans. • Conference spaces are being precision fit to minimize wasted space: Outsized conference rooms that only support formal presentations to large groups are largely underutilized. Progressive organizations offer a variety of

right-sized meeting spaces to more effectively support a range of activities, downsizing from an average of conference room seating for 10 to seven meeting space seats. • Circulation space is being activated to foster connection: Rather than getting workers from point A to point B, circulation space can offer increased opportunities for effective activity and increased connectivity. Progressive workplaces have an average of 47% connective space, versus 33% of circulation space in traditional floorplans. • Isolated breakrooms are becoming centralized plazas: While distant breakrooms offer proximity to the small groups they serve, progressive companies want to foster broader social connection and information sharing. With four people per plaza seat versus 16 people per breakroom seat, centrally located gathering spaces encourage fortuitous interactions and help bring an organization’s culture to life. • Privacy is no longer a luxury given to a few, but available on-demand to anyone who needs it: Quiet places to think and recharge are beneficial to all, but traditional offices only offer one per every 67 people. A variety of private settings provided throughout the floorplan, at a ratio of 24 people per haven, allows all workers to find a place to focus or have a quiet conversation.

50

In addition to their research into how spaces are changing, Herman Miller researched Living Office workplaces and the employees and leaders who work in them. The results clearly indicate that Living Office has helped people feel more creative, more connected, and more engaged in their work. Companies are seeing greater efficiency, productivity, and innovation. With the addition of over a dozen new products to Herman Miller’s purposefully varied offering, the company has restructured the presentation of workplace solutions to better support the purpose, character, and activities of the organizations, groups, and individuals that use them. This new structure offers organizations and their design partners a process for selecting and integrating these products into the workplace. Visitors to the Herman Miller showroom will walk through Landscape Systems such as Canvas, Layout Studio, and Public, solutions that offer the adaptability, variation, and modularity to meet a broad set of needs, as well as a cohesive design that harmonizes seamlessly across the floorplate. Augmenting these enterprise-ready Landscape Systems are Focused Portfolios, discrete solutions designed to meet precise needs of specific teams and their work. Focused Portfolios include Locale for high-performance teams, Metaform Portfolio for hyper-flexible, highly-customizable settings, and Renew Link for high-density settings that support extended periods of focused work. Throughout the showroom, guests will find garden-like respites that showcase the significant expansion of Herman Miller’s soft seating and lounge furnishings offer for the work, higher education, and healthcare markets. In a diverse offering of colors, materials, and finishes, the new

52

lounge collections—including Plex, Striad, Spot, and Saiba—can help customers create places of purposeful variety. Visitors to NeoCon 2016 can pause, connect, and revive in the South Lobby, which Herman Miller has transformed into a vibrant setting outfitted with a dynamic range of lounge furnishings—from iconic classics reimagined in fresh materials, to new introductions from Herman Miller and Geiger that redefine comfort in the workplace. As seen in the Herman Miller, Geiger, and Herman Miller Healthcare/Nemschoff showrooms upstairs, the South Lobby showcases more saturated palettes that demonstrate how colors, materials, and finishes can uniquely express and support the purpose, character, and activities of individuals and organizations. www.hermanmiller.com www.hermanmiller.com/neocon-2016.html www.hermanmiller.com/solutions/living-office.html

Award Winning Contemporary London Townhouse

LLI Design have recently completed their

Southwood project, a total interior design and refurbishment of a 4 story 1970’s London townhouse. The project has been awarded “Best Interior Design Private Residence London” in the UK Property Awards - 2015 / 2016.

Although the room sizes were good, being the full width of the property on each floor and benefitting from good natural light; the circulation spaces on all floors were cramped and dark. Lower Ground Floor

LLI Design recently completed a total redesign and refurbishment of a 4 story 1970’s townhouse in Highgate, a leafy and desirable part of London.

The existing staircase that led from the lower ground to the upper ground floor, was removed and replaced with a new, feature open tread glass and steel staircase towards the back of the house, thereby maximising the lower ground floor space. All of the internal walls on this floor were removed and in doing so created an expansive and welcoming space.

The house had tremendous potential and the new owners, a young professional couple, wanted to embrace the 1970’s feel, rather than try to ignore it, albeit not in a cliched way. Top of their wish list was a contemporary glass and steel open tread staircase and a master bathroom with a distinctive WOW factor.

Due to its’ lack of natural daylight this floor worked extremely well as a Living / TV room. The new open timber tread, steel stringer with glass balustrade staircase was designed to sit easily within the existing building and to complement the original 1970’s spiral staircase.

71

Because this space was going to be a hard working area, it was designed with a rugged semi industrial feel. Underfloor heating was installed and the floor was tiled with a large format Mutina tile in dark khaki with an embossed design. This was complemented by a distressed painted brick effect wallpaper on the back wall which received no direct light and thus the wallpaper worked extremely well, really giving the impression of a painted brick wall.

Upper Ground Floor Living Room The mood changes dramatically on entering the upper ground floor, here the owners wanted a relaxed feeling of calm. The colour palette for this floor was soft cream, yellow, and pale blue with key accent pieces in black.

The furniture specified was bright and colourful, as a counterpoint to the walls and floor. The palette was burnt orange, yellow and dark woods with industrial metals.

The visual impact of the new staircase was kept to a minimum by installing a glass balustrade with no handrail. The furniture choices were kept quite simple as this room had to function as a dining area as well as a living room.

Furniture pieces included a metallic, distressed sideboard and desk, a burnt orange sofa, yellow Hans J Wegner Papa Bear armchair, and a large black and white zig zag patterned rug.

A bespoke fitted banquette was designed for the return besides the staircase, adjacent to the kitchen.

LLI Design offer a comprehensive design service creating beautifully crafted interiors for discerning clients. Based in their Studios in Highgate, London the creative team is led by Design Director Linda Levene. Her background as a fashion and textile designer is reflected in her love of form, texture and colour.

72

This was lit from behind with LED strips, throwing a gentle light up the wall. Adding a round table, 2 dining chairs, a matt black accent pendant lamp over the table and artwork above helped to define the dining area. Although it had a small footprint the dining area can comfortably sit 6 people. Furniture choices for the living area were kept simple with a generous L shaped sofa and an industrial styled coffee table, this sat on a delicately coloured yellow and grey rug. As a counterpoint to this a rich teal coloured velvet accent chair was placed in the window near the garden. A retro matt black metal floor lamp complemented the matt black pendant lamp over the dining table. Strong pieces of artwork and graphic cushions help bring the separate zoned areas together to form a cohesive whole. Kitchen Calming hues were repeated in the kitchen, with pale khaki units and a cream composite worktop. A small breakfast bar was added and dramatic dark bronze tiles created a backsplash between the top of the counter and the bottom of the units. First Floor Shower Room The first floor shower room was specified with a huge shower, the full width of the room, with statement diamond shaped embossed tiles in tones of cream, cappuccino and chocolate. An LED underlit wooden vanity unit and mirror finish the dramatic look.

Recent projects include the interior design and modernisation of properties in Hampstead, Fulham and Highgate including a 10,000 sq ft victorian residence, a 12,000 sq ft new build home and the co-joining and re-planning of two apartments to provide a single luxury penthouse. Second Floor Master Suite The second floor was reconfigured from a series of separate rooms into a stylish master suite, with an open plan bathroom featuring a statement freestanding bath. The open plan bathroom sits comfortably adjacent to the bedroom with textured porcelain wall tiles sitting easily next to the Cole & Son Fornasetti “Clouds” wallpaper. Patterned floor tiles act as a counterpoint to the to the pale timber wide plank flooring. As the bathroom was open plan it was important to bring a more “bedroom” aesthetic into the bathroom rather than the other way round and this was achieved by selecting floor tiles in the bathroom that were in the format of a rug pattern as well as adding 2no. bronze mirrors over the vanity unit. A freestanding bath was positioned facing the bedroom, offering views of the garden beyond and an opaque glass sliding screen was installed between the WC and bathroom.

An LED strip under the vanity unit, additional wall lights and small in-floor uplights around the bath completed the look. The bathroom area appears bigger than it is thanks to its open plan nature. Summary & Awards By rethinking the core aspects of the design and layout LLI Design have transformed a tall vertical townhouse into a home with a feeling of expansiveness and laterality, creating an uplifting and comfortable home for the owners. As with the majority of LLI Design’s projects, the construction, joinery, home automation and landscaping were carried out by our in-house vertically integrated teams - Pegasus Property & Pegasus Automation. The project was recently awarded - Best Interior Design Private Residence London, in the United Kingdom Property Awards 2015 / 16. LLI Design are very proud to have won this Award, in competition with numerous London Interior Designers. Entrants' schemes were judged against a wide range of design criteria by a panel of over 70 interior design experts from all over the world and chaired by two active members of the House of Lords : Lord Caithness and Lord Best. www.llidesign.co.uk

stablished 33 years ago in October 1982, Touch Ironmongery is one of London’s leading ironmongers. In fact today, Touch can supply a wide range of finishes including Brass, Satin Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Copper, Bronze -solid and plated, BMA, Antique Brass, Black, Pewter, Ceramic, Leather, Stainless Steel, Satin Stainless Steel, Gun Metal, and the list keeps growing. Whatever finish you require, Touch can help you get the right look. Touch occupy their recently refurbished showroom at 210 Fulham Road, Chelsea, where they display a vast range of their 5,000 products. With a customer base including Interior Designers, Builders and individuals who are interested in the top end of the

Ironmongery market, Touch mainly supply to residential premises but hotel and office properties also contribute to their vast clientele. The company also have a healthy export market to all corners of the world, namely the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Saleem Qureshi is the newest member of our team and has 10 years’ experience, meaning their knowledge is unrivalled in this industry. The range of products supplied by Touch date from circa 1640 French (Louise XIV) and cover all subsequent periods (Georgian, Edwardian & Victorian), art deco and contemporary pieces also make up the product ranges. In addition, Touch showcases the very best of British manufacturing; the best ranges are still produced in the Midlands by craftsmen in factories dating back 200 years or more. Touch also sell European manufactured goods

which is considered to be of a very good quality and in recent years they have introduced some of the far eastern made products, albeit in a limited range but cost effective. With trends continuously evolving, new innovative products are constantly under development. Touch understand that keeping up with the fashion-shifts is imperative in order to provide every customer with the best solution for their requirements. Ironmongery can be a difficult and complicated aspect of a building project, as a result Touch aim to take this awkward aspect and make it user friendly and clear to understand by offering an onsite service where they carry out a detailed door by door, window by window, room by room Ironmongery schedule, highlighting all requirements and identifying any items that can be refurbished. Refurbishment is a large part of the business; Touch will undertake complete ironmongery refurbishment projects, and can restore old paint covered door furniture to their former glory, looking as new, at a fraction of the cost to replace.

Klover Cooking Range

The Aga has been a kitchen favourite since the 1950s but, with oil and electricity prices rising once again, people are looking for an alternative. The cooking range that seems to have grabbed everyone's attention is the wood pellet burning Klover Smart 120. The contemporary model, a stunning combination of black and stainless, has that classic Italian flair for design. With a large top hotplate and a glass doored oven, it's a joy to cook on. However the really big step forward is that while the Aga was made for cooking, the Smart 120 will run all your central heating, domestic hot water as well as cooking. Even better is that it runs on clean and convenient wood pellets, so making you eligible for the generous RHI

government grant. The Smart 120 will light itself when the house needs warming and turn itself off when the job is done. While it’s burning, the kitchen is filled with that warm orange glow that only comes from burning wood, perfect to make you feel cosy on a cold winters day. For your local Klover stockist visit Firepowerheating.co.uk or phone 0844 3320155

Fondis Insert Fires There's a conundrum facing all of us when planning our new house – we want it well insulated and air tight but what's a home without a real fire at its heart for those long winter evenings? However if you design in a large fireplace then you lose your hard earned warmth up a big open chimney. For many of us a gas effect fire just doesn't cut it - without the sights, sounds and smells of a real fire, that primitive part of our soul just isn't satisfied. There is however a solution in the form of the new generation of guillotine door insert fires. These great looking built-in stoves take it to a whole new level, with big up and down glass doors that mean you don't see anything but the fire. It'll bring its combustion air straight from outside, so no draughts, and put out a gentle convected heat than can warm one room or be spread right around the house. All the pleasure of a real fire but controllable, safe to leave burning and a joy to watch. The market leader is Fondis, combining minimalist French design with a real understanding of how to make a fire burn best. There are even double sided models that look wonderful between two rooms or at the centre of a big space. And for that real guilty pleasure, slide the glass door up and away with the lift of a finger, and enjoy the radiant warmth of a genuine open fire. Decorex International

Decorex International, the UK’s longest running design fair and the only one of its kind for the high-end interiors market, returns to the prestigious grounds of Syon Park this year for its 39th edition. Decorex will be celebrating the roots of design as its theme for 2016. Visitors will have the chance to see new products from more than 400 established and emerging brands over the course of four days, which span the full spectrum of design, as well as a host of feature areas. Embracing the roots of design, renowned British furniture designer, Tim Gosling, will be curating the main entrance, with an exhibition called ‘The Heritage of Chair Making’. Working with the collections from the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Frederick Parker Collection, Tim will be asking 12 visual creators to choose their favourite piece and why it speaks to them.

83

Julis has carefully selected these makers for their innovation and mastery across a range of craft skills from ceramics to electronics. Each maker will all be creating new work especially for Decorex. Every year a host of new exhibitors come to Decorex and 2016 is no exception. Specialist upholster, Aiveen Daly, will unveil ‘Treasured Possessions’ a new seven-piece collection inspired by the intrigue of haute joaillerie, with exquisite materials including Italian lambskin and silks. Family run business, Neatsmith, will show its bespoke, luxury wardrobes and kitchens. Santorus will present its debut collection of wallpapers, six ornate patterns an an array of dramatic colour palettes, each named after exotic spices and rich hues, drawing on the Indian heritage of the brand’s creative directors.

Confirmed names include Anya Hindmarch, Jo Malone and Sir Paul Smith. Don’t miss ‘Crafthouse’, four substantial spaces presented by The New Craftsmen. This series of interactive roomsets will explore the fundamental characteristics of what makes a home by studying the domestic rituals by which we live (sleeping, bathing, eating and working). Makers involved will include Nic Webb, Georgia Kemball and Gareth Neal.Future Heritage returns with 14 new designers/makers. This edited section of the names to commission and collect in British contemporary craft has been compiled by curator, applied arts and design critic, Corinne Julius.

SLIMPORT ROUND METAL VISION FRAMES When we consider the possibility of moving in with someone we are very selective and try to choose someone who shares our values, who we can imagine spending the rest of our lives with and be ourselves. Why should it be different with our furniture? With strong emphasis on the timeless design, sustainability and outstanding quality, MINT Furniture believes it shouldn’t.

MINT furniture was founded in 2009 by two designers - Janis Rauza and Ieva Andzane, of North European origin, where historically the design core values are functionality and natural aesthetics. MINT Furniture highly values ease and authenticity. Simplicity of the shape, lightness of the design and easy installation, as well as high quality of the materials and variations of colours are MINT values that will turn furnishing of the house into a pleasant experience inspiring achievement. www.mintfurnitureshop.com

I intend to pursue answers to very simple questions, related to architectural design, and more importantly, the generation of ideas in architectural design. Unlike in science, where the test of an idea is, when same method produces the same results, in our profession we expect, that using the same way of inquiry methods, we can arrive to completely different results. Related to the WHAT? question, the object and the intent of our activity, I posit three notions: Connotive, Cognitive, Volitive (related to feeling, thinking and will, respectively).

My intent is therefore, to unify feeling and thinking through will. The will is manifested with drawing. To answer the HOW? question, I conduct my investigations with "Surface Drawings", or "Spaceprints". In this intentionally simplified quest, the WHY? question's answer

is: this method simultaneously investigates, analyzes, explores and articulates solid and void, or matter and space. These Spaceprints are therefore the first manifestations of the intended physical reality, so they are illustrating the transition of spirit to matter.

Hive, A Unique Style Outdoor Living In A Different Way

This year, EGO Paris, the French manufacturer of outdoor furniture, has turned to designer Fabrice Berrux for a contemporary and graphic design collection. The aim of EGO Paris has always been to make life outdoors a special time for conviviality and friendliness, and because Fabrice Berrux shares this same view, he was an ideal partner. For the Hive collection, Fabrice imagined confettis gathering together to make the structure of the furniture.

"These cells blend together naturally as they attract one another to become a coherent whole" explains the designer. "The hexagonal cells of the hive struck me as obvious as it meets the idea of composition which essentially is the signature of EGO Paris." The Hive collection is modular. Each piece of furniture from armchair to sofa, stool, loveseat, table and half table, are made in the shape of a cell allowing for various compositions.

99

The "Confident", the "Conversation", or the "Indiscrete" are some of the possible ambiance combinations from this range all of which facilitate conversation and contact between people. The elegant and refined aluminum structures, the signature of EGO Paris, allow for large and comfortable cushions. EGO Paris knows how to give shape to BatylineÂŽ canvas by Serge Ferrari which provides backs that are like "a protective screen, yet still open to the surrounding environment," says Fabrice Berrux.

The cushions not only add a touch of style but are also a source of comfort making the Hive collection even more lively and adaptable. To make each furniture piece unique, the Hive collection benefits from EGO Paris's large range of finishes, plus a selection of the famous Missoni HomeÂŽ fabrics.

Our aim, our ambition is to experiment either the outdoor space alone or with the love ones with authenticity, in a spirit of conviviality, liberated from the social constraints.

The Hive collection truly is a hive where people can gather, share and chat all together. Smart, with a real graphic design, the Hive collection is an invitation for conviviality outdoors. www.egoparis.com

Love your Laundry It’s always good to be able to share a great idea, Julia and Lucie two busy working Mums’ have done more than that, with Lucie’s clever idea. Historically being dissatisfied with using a variety of floor standing indoor clothes airers and wanting a ceiling airer Lucie looked for a solution. This need for an improvement in her own home led her to design a wall mounted clothes airer. These ladies then took Lucie’s concept idea and developed it into a product and launched their brand Julu. The Laundry Ladder hangs on its wall brackets ready to use, with

its aesthetically pleasing design you are sure to find a suitable wall to locate it. The simple pulley system is used to open and close the front frame up and down giving you easy access at all times even when fully loaded with your washing. Made in either Pine or English Ash this strong airer can carry lots of washing, the thick rods are gentle on your woollens and delicates, reducing fold lines. This clever airer need not only be an indoor airer, with a second set of brackets located somewhere on a wall outside you can on sunny days take the Laundry Ladder outdoors and take advantage of a dry day. This October for the first time they are attending the Grand Designs Live at the NEC Birmingham, Stand no E32. The Sheer Joy of Art in the Garden

If you go somewhere and you spot a piece of quality sculpture in the garden you know you are visiting somewhere special. This is a something recognised by the wealthy over the ages from classical times, the renaissance and reaching its pinnacle with the grand tours by the aristocratic, the rich and the knowledgeable in the 19th and early 20th centuries in Britain.

Peter de Sausmarez is no longer astonished at the amount and value of sculpture bought on line and thinks it is growing confidence with the internet and the sheer choice available to anyone who can turn on a computer or a handheld from the pleasure of their armchair to browse work gathered from the four corners of the Earth.

More Than Design: The Pentahotels Experience Frankfurt am Main, 25th July 2016 – Original, unconventional, relaxed and stylish - these properties describe the unique overall experience of pentahotels. With its unmistakable pentastyle, the young, dynamic hotel brand is one of the first to have made its mark and established itself as a pioneer in the lifestyle hotel segment. pentahotels does not stick to standard principals. Innovation, a strong vision, a good dose of creativity and courage define the brand’s philosophy. It is evident that many things are different compared with market competitors in the sophisticated 4* hotel segment as soon as you step inside the hotel. This not only relates to the clear design. Cool outfits, a distinct fragrance, relaxed music and the easygoing, yet professional, way of addressing guests are all just as much a part of it. What’s more, guests easily find everything they need, and at top quality. Free pay-TV, Sky Sports, in some hotels even a PlayStation 4 and a pinball machine in the room, as well as a quality of sleep that is unparalleled in this segment. This experience can be summarised as follows: fun with functionality, creativity with comfort, style with simplicity. The design and the brand experience speak a clear language.

This is also confirmed by Alastair Thomann, international managing director of pentahotels: “Ten years ago, we made our philosophy of a neighbourhood lifestyle available to guests for the first time with pentalounge – a mixture of a lobby, reception, bar and cafe. We are continually developing our open design concept further. We focus on our particular finesses and regionality.” Since the relaunch of the hotel brand in 2007, pentahotels has become a successful global player. At the same time, the pentastyle - from “Design 1.0” to a globally applicable “Design 3.0” - has grown along with this almost organically. Design 3.0 will be presented to the public for the first time in Paris in Autumn 2016 and is being introduced in all newly-opened hotels. Besides its own construction projects, penthotels also puts its fingerprints on various hotel conversion projects. The brand takes over existing hotels and creates its own world inside them. The joy of trying new and innovative things underlines the whole pentastyle-concept. „Even if some of our design experiments turn out to be unsuitable for our new acquisitions, we continue to find innovative solutions” says Alastair Thomann. “It is our goal to always be ahead of the trend and to stay an innovation leader”

London’s Iconic Lighthouse Building From Mysterious Past To Bright Future Adjacent to Kings Cross, sits the iconic Grade II Listed Flat-Iron Lighthouse building which has been renovated into office and retail space with the help of Selectaglaze. Built somewhere between 1875 - 1884 it has lain neglected for over 20 years. UK Real Estate took on the huge task of restoring the iconic building for its new purpose as office and retail space and appointed Balfour Beatty as its main contractor. The project wasn’t without its challenges, with two underground tunnels running beneath; the building’s restoration had to be carefully managed, including tackling the issues of noise and vibrations. The solution to the extensive vibration issues was to isolate all internal fixtures and fittings by inserting elastomeric bearing pads at all points of contact with the external structure. Secondary glazing was an intrinsic component of this solution as a fully independent internal

window system allows the full sealing of the internal envelope. Selectaglaze is the specialist in the design, manufacture and installation of secondary glazing, with fifty years’ experience working on all building types. Selectaglaze recommended the use of 8mm toughened glass, glazed to Series 25 and Series 90 vertical sliders and Series 41 lift out units, designed to suit the style and sightlines of the primary window. In total Selectaglaze installed 83 units. When there is a gap between the primary and secondary glazing of at least 100mm a noise reduction of 45dB is possible. Selectaglaze units are a reversible adaptation and are accepted by most heritage bodies. For further information, please contact Selectaglaze on 01727 837271 / e mail: enquiries@selectaglaze.co.uk or visit: www.selectaglaze.co.uk

Studiomhna

Villa Diyafa Boutique-hotel & Spa, Rabat, Morocco WORDS: Studiomhna

PHOTOS: Studiomhna

The Paris Studio has been imagining, optimising and designing scenarios for over twenty years. He was a unique aesthete, who dedicated his entire life to the art of living in all its forms.

Right in the heart of the Ambassadors district, Rabat has welcomed its first boutique hotel of which the interior design and decoration is signed by the Studio Marc Hertrich & Nicolas Adnet in November, 2014. Villa Diyafa is a 5-star hotel imagined as an exceptional private villa. It offers its guests ten luxurious suites, a private residence, a gourmet restaurant, a bar and a spa, all of which is surrounded by a landscaped garden with a swimming pool. The spirit of the place is a tribute to the famous Zyriab, who lived in the ninth century, not only was he one of the main figures in the history of Arab-Andalusian music but also a pioneer in the fields of fashion, gastronomy, poetry and astronomy which he imported to Andalusia.

Via the medium of interior architecture, interior decorating and design, it offers a certain vision of elegance, a cultured, respectful and approving look at history, but which is also curious about new technologies, arts and crafts, and culture which transcends all barriers.

Each space and each of their composing elements were designed by the Studio Marc Hertrich & Nicolas Adnet to give a particular identity to this place, to create an interaction that is both intimate and precious, which celebrates through its decorative choices, the reconciliation of Moroccan and Western traditions. Contemporary settings, bathed by the brightness from the glossy white stuccos, are punctuated by the natural colours of leather, wood and stone with the warm, deep colours of Morocco. It is a balancing act between tradition and modernity, so as to offer guests refined and privileged settings. The reception is adorned with hundreds of firefly lamps reflecting the warmth of the welcome that will be reserved in this residence. The main lounge, The Majlis, is illuminated by a chandelier that is both monumental and delicate, it sublimates the exceptional volumes of this area. Sofas suites covered with shimmering textiles are arranged on thick rugs around tables of reinterpreted Moroccan design. This leads on to the bar, where the lighting fixtures, hide rugs, inlaid tables, come together with the parquet to create an intimate and friendly space. The restaurant, protected by screens of embossed leather, lit by flares and its candle chandelier is an elegant setting to enjoy the cuisine of its chef Khalid Benghallem.

All these spaces open onto the main terrace and the gardens. As we follow the seguia, or irrigation channel, lined by palms that mark the main perspective, we discover cosy lounges and a semi Olympic pool. Upstairs, the Moroccan library with its deep, warm tones, offers a confidential space around its inlaid wooden fireplace. It opens onto a terrace overlooking the gardens. It is adjoined by a study that can be privatised. On the same floor, there is also a boardroom decorated in tawny tones. A soothing and comfortable space, where the latest technologies are present, but discreetly hidden behind the panelling or in our lacquered cabinet “The Cabinet of Hours. The 10 suites are inspired by the seasonal colour codes that Zyriab had set for the art of wearing clothes. Spring and pastel colours evoking renewal, with summer being made up of white and sunny colours. The atmosphere is a hymn to shade and light, so typical of Morocco, through the effects of light coming through the lighting fixtures made of laser-cut leather or leather lacing, and vertical wooden trellises. Berber Necklace, an artistic composition of silk thread and framed embroidery dot the white walls of the suites. The bathroom combines whiteness and the taupe tones of natural stone, which become a piece or art engraved above the bathtub. Each suite has its own garden or terrace overlooking the hotel’s beautiful protected garden. North of the garden, a private villa, The Residence, offers a unique experience with its 500 square meters of indoor and outdoor spaces. Private garden and swimming pool, outdoor lounge, living room, dining room and upstairs a prestigious suite with steam room and private treatment room make it an exceptional place. Finally, the spa offers a fitness room that opens directly onto the pool and gardens, a hair salon and two treatment suites. A world bathed in powdered orange and black and lit by flares to provide a timeless moment dedicated to well-being.

Situated somewhere between analyses, a study on functionality, a laboratory for ideas, and a piece of momentary poetry, Marc Hertrich & Nicolas Adnet tell stories from around the world in homes, hotels, spas and restaurants and other places which they invent. The reason why Marc is naturally passionate about design is because craftsmanship, research and refinement are a "family affair". Five generations of cabinet makers have led him to know how to look at, appreciate, compile and choose among the effects of materials, starting with wood varieties, their different colours, their rhythms or the design of a cross-section. A graduate of the famous Ecole Boulle, after having studied design at the School of Decorative Arts at the same time as cabinet making in Strasbourg, he “practised” in two offices before joining Michel Boyer’s famous architecture agency. Curious and creative, he was spotted and chosen to decorate the Hotel Richemond in Geneva: his first contract and “a fabulous memory which was to launch my career”. He worked there for over five years, discovering the world of luxury, “the extraordinary” then unveiled its true meaning for the young Interior Designer. He voyaged extensively and regularly to the great capitals (for the world of fine jewellery, opening of boutiques, fitting-out of establishments or for the decoration of parties).

pAstikan laki huja min num inveles ces re veiqui the oluptatio cusam endae vellorum et quoditium quunt ut autet et venit fuga. The two artists quickly understood the synergy which existed between them as one of life's gifts, joined forces and developed new projects together, imagining decoration as if writing a scenario with joy and motivation. Their cooperation marked a new departure: that of large-scale projects throughout the world.

Ten years after creating his agency, he decided to stop over in Paris where a memorable meeting would give new impetus to his agency’s production; a man passionate about elegance, a self-taught man who was then working for Lanvin: Nicolas Adnet, introduced by a mutual friend. Two personalities and characters, but with an eerily similar outlook and desire to embellish everyday life. Nicolas was then working in the world of haute couture, admired Montana and the work of Yves St Laurent “the absolute master who embodied elegance, respect and impertinence, colour and style

With Club Med they fully participated in the move by the company into the upmarket end. They introduced the start of a new concept - that of the 5 tridents Villages and the luxury villas in Mauritius (La plantation d'Albion). Followed by numerous renovations (Cancun, Ixtapa, Bali Phuket, etc.) the gigantic project of Valmorel: its village, its 5-trident space and its chalets. Recently another creation of the Studio MHNA has marked a new stage in the raising of the standards and the development of Club Med, that of the opening of the Village of Guilin in China. Their work on beauty has a real relevance, with a pronounced taste for attention to detail. Together, they personalise their accomplishments with the natural richness of the places which they inhabit, being inspired not only by local culture, traces and traditions, but also by the unsurpassable talent contributed by craftspeople, true partners in creation. Thanks to this exclusive approach which forms part of a strong identity, the Studio MHNA has expanded and currently employs more than twenty-five pea*. Nicolas and Marc share projects by combining their ideas and emotions When the duo imagines chic places to dine, they like to work with the desire to dream and escape. Some of the restaurants designed and decorated by the studio include those of Michel Rostang (Dessirier, !Absinthe, Jarrasse, Le Cafe des Abattoirs), the Pourcel brothers and Antoine Westermann, Frederic Duca at l'Instant d'Or in Paris. These places exuberantly associate with delectation, character to impertinence, humour to tenderness, and elegance to pleasure.

118

Combining functionality with poetry, creating a "multifaceted trademark which is nevertheless recognisable" in the French spirit, is the direction which the two partners are taking, bringing with them in their enthusiastic and infinite production hotel flagships such as the Martinez in Cannes or the Grand Hotel de Cabourg, a testimonial to hundred-year old luxury, renowned for its role in the beginning of sea bathing. For Accor, they are helping to transform the Sofitel hotels so that they join the refined and highest end of the market in Lisbon, Marseille (Vieux Port) in Casablanca and soon in Frankfurt. In Quiberon they have revisited the mythical thalassotherapy spa for the group, paying a fantastic tribute to Brittany... Hotels belonging to large groups, mythical luxury hotels, high profile and gastronomic restaurants, but also boutique hotels (Les Jardins de la Villa in Paris or the East West in Geneva), paradisiacal resorts (Moofushi in the Maldives for Constance Hotels & Resorts) and private projects, the studio produces

and designs many unique works serving the history of a place but also associating artistic expression. True creation is one which is shared and open to others, building bridges and links between the idea and the production, the design and the realisation; which brings together expertise and gives it full rein. Certain of their works are now produced by very reputable French manufacturers. Their 25 years of experience, their career paths, their voyages, their vision of things, their analyses, their singularity and the fineness and richness of their ideas have brought certain of their clients to ask them to have a much larger approach towards the projects. Today as well as being used for their expertise and savoir-faire, they have been entrusted with missions of artistic direction and global design. www.studiomhna.com

Why traditional kitchen design trends continue to be popular In this modern age, with access to a range of exotic manmade materials there is still one kitchen style that remains king, the traditional kitchen. The past decade has seen a resurgence in traditional design, not just in the kitchen but across the whole home. Modern designs are now being changed for traditional décor as people look for a more traditional way of life. The combination of natural stone and timber cabinetry tend to have more longevity than modern designs because they embrace the basic form and function needed in the home. Over the past decade we have seen a resurgence in cooking and baking series on TV and online as people look at eating healthier. This uptake in people cooking from scratch has fuelled the popularity of classic kitchen appliances such as Aga ovens and Kitchen Aids as people return to traditional cooking techniques. Luxury Interior Design Studio, Appointed To Reinvent The Ability Group’s Flagship Vessel WORDS: Designer Touches

PHOTOS: Designer Touches

Designer Touches Ltd has recently completed the interior renovation and re-fit of the Ability Group’s flagship vessel, the M/Y ABILITY. The 39.6 meter luxury super yacht, formally owned by the fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, has been listed as one of the top 10 most iconic celebrity mega yachts and for the first time in its history is available for private charter. The new owners of the M/Y ABILITY commissioned the leading Surrey based interior design firm to undertake the project of a major interior refit, to ensure that the ABILITY is ready to charter. The brief included the desire for the interior to be sympathetic to the yacht’s history and previous owner’s flare for design. Mary Georgiou, Founder and Principle Designer at Designer Touches said “The ABILITY is sure to stand out from the crowd. Working closely with its current owner, we used a couture pallet of taupe and greys ranging from muted dove grey to dark and more intense shades to provide an injection of drama and atmosphere. We combined this pallet with opulent leathers, to provide texture, animal prints and natural fabrics to create a lavish yet elegant and tasteful interior, worthy of the yacht’s history and status.”

The focal point of the yacht is the main saloon which has VIP stamped all over it, with many of the key pieces of furniture within this room being sourced directly from Roberto Cavalli’s furniture range, creating a luxurious space to relax and unwind after a day of sailing. Another highlight of the yacht is the magnificent master suite which is fit for the glamorous guests that will be onboard. With its full height suede panel headboard, large gold gilded feature lamps and luxurious studded cream sofa from the Roberto Cavalli home collection, it provides a luxurious oasis for guests to retreat to. The cabinet doors have been upholstered in greybrown shagreen leather for an injection of impact and texture and finished with beautifully crafted gold handles. The master bedroom ensuite includes design features that pay homage to the yacht’s former owner, including the unique serpent wall lights. The beautiful cabin interiors were inspired by the colour pallets and prints seen in Roberto Cavalli’s latest catwalk collection. Textured animal print wallcoverings and furs were combined with dazzling metallic fabrics, a favoured combination of the designer, providing a fashionable yet elegant environment to unwind. The rooms are complemented by the sleek upholstered bespoke designer cabinets and statement headboards. The yacht features several fabulous entertaining spaces including a state of the art cinema room located on the top deck, perfect for entertaining guests. The design of this room used intense dark shades of black and gold to create an atmospheric space. The main deck features an informal day time eating area but is transformed with its use of rich opulent fabrics and fur throws into a spectacular backdrop for al fresco evening dining and entertaining area, with spectacular views onto the ocean. Rolls Royce Rolls-Royce Celebrates The Cocktail Hour With Limited Edition Hamper The upper tier of the Hamper, containing tumblers, decanters and a shaker, is adorned in a Golden Sand coloured leather, selected for its vibrancy, offset with polished aluminium. Smaller utensils including a muddler finished in American Walnut and a strainer engraved with the ‘RR’ monogram are securely stored on a specially developed moveable rack that can be locked when not in use and moved via a hinge to ensure effortless access when required. Only the very finest materials, sourced from the world’s best suppliers adorn a Rolls-Royce motor car, with this philosophy extending in this instance to the choice of glassware. Theresienthal, Europe’s most revered glassmaker and supplier of many of the Continent’s Royal Courts, was chosen for their unique dedication to artisanal hand-craftsmanship. The glasses themselves take one month to complete owing to the utilisation of a time-honoured technique that sees the glass blown into beech wood moulds, guaranteeing an exceptionally smooth surface.

Many of the Theresienthal craftspeople represent the fifth generation of their family to work at the foundry. The presence of the human hand at every stage of the production process ensures no two glasses are the same, with almost imperceptible differences attributable only to the glasses’ master craftsperson. As an exclusive flourish, designed to express the delicacy of the glasses themselves, the rims are finished in platinum. Finally, a perfect service is guaranteed through the inclusion of a glass tray, discreetly and safely housed beneath the integrated wooden chopping board, ensuring drinks are presented to guests in consummate Rolls-Royce luxury. As a finishing touch, a book containing a series of cocktail recipes inspired by the marque’s extraordinary heritage completes the set. Only 15 of these exquisitely crafted hampers will be produced, ensuring their exclusivity. Customers wishing to acquire one can do so through one of the marque’s 130 dealerships across the globe.

137

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is delighted to present a limited edition Cocktail Hamper, conceived to meet the needs of customers who wish to relax and enjoy something a little beyond the traditional glass of Champagne. This elegant vision is realised through a marriage of hallmark Rolls-Royce attention-to-detail and remarkable craftsmanship. The designer behind its creation, Rolls-Royce Accessories Designer Sina Maria Eggl, consulted with experts from Dorchester Collection’s London Hotels, The Dorchester and 45 Park Lane, to ensure the Hamper is perfectly appointed to cater for a vast selection of classic and contemporary cocktails. The Hamper itself is meticulously hand-crafted over a period of eight weeks from American Walnut Wood and the finest Natural Grain Leather that adorn the interior of some Rolls-Royce motor cars. On opening the Navy Blue leather-bound lid, the customer is presented with every necessary accoutrement required to create and enjoy the perfect cocktail. Each implement is a bespoke, hand-made creation designed to combine beautiful aesthetics with practicality, ensuring effortless use. Indeed, the notions of effortlessness and supreme luxury inform everything about the design. The paring knife, for example, is magnetically housed in a recess hewn into the American Walnut structure thereby ensuring it is stored and transported in safety and without disturbance. On opening, an automatic integrated light illuminates the Hamper in a warm glow, in turn reflecting from the mirrored surfaces to evoke the aesthetic of a luxurious cocktail bar.

“Each motor car that we craft represents a deeply personal expression of individual customer tastes and lifestyles. This extraordinary scope for personalisation extends far beyond the car itself through an Accessories Collection, featuring exceptional objects designed to augment the lifestyles of the marque’s customers,” said Gavin Hartley, Head of Bespoke Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “This beautifully executed Cocktail Hamper illustrates the marque’s intimate understanding of the desires of the most discerning patrons of luxury in the world; Rolls-Royce customers.” Every possible application is considered and ingeniously executed. Should the user wish to present their guests with canapés, two dishes find their place in the lower portion of the Hamper, either side of an ice bucket, whilst discreet drawers hold recipe cards and fine cotton napkins.

Bentley Bentayga Fly Fishing By Mulliner The Ultimate Angling Accessory

Bentley has created the ultimate angling accessory; the new Bentayga Fly Fishing by Mulliner. Hand-crafted by Bentley’s bespoke coachbuilding division, the Bentayga Fly Fishing by Mulliner is an exquisite installation which houses all the equipment required for a successful day on the river. Four rods are stored in special tubes trimmed in Saddle leather with Linen cross-stitching and located on the underside of the parcel shelf. A pair of landing nets in matching leather bags are stored in a bespoke, carpettrimmed hard pocket built into the side of the boot. At the heart of the Bentayga Fly Fishing by Mulliner are three individual, Saddle-leather-trimmed units: a master tackle station; a refreshment case; and waterproof wader-stowage trunk. •

Bentley creates the ultimate luxury car for fly fishing enthusiasts

Exquisite fly fishing set hand-crafted in wood and leather by Mulliner

Bentayga’s go-anywhere ability takes you right to the riverbank

The master tackle station and refreshment case sit on a sliding tray that allows for easy access. Inside the master tackle unit is a special Burr Walnut veneered drawer containing a fly-tying vice and tools, as well as a selection of cotton, hooks and feathers. Beneath this are four machinedfrom-solid aluminium reel cases trimmed in Saddle leather with a Linen cross-stitching.

139

For the first time with Bentayga, Mulliner ‘Welcome Lights’ are also featured. These are built into the underside of the doors and project the Bentley and Mulliner logos on to the ground when the doors are opened. In addition as a bespoke option, any personal logo or graphic can be individually specified on a customer’s Bentayga order. Geoff Dowding, Director of Mulliner, said: “The Bentayga Fly Fishing car showcases the breadth and level of detail a customer can expect from Mulliner. This is an individual bespoke solution and our skilled craftspeople can design elegant and exquisitely executed bespoke solutions to complement any customer lifestyle or hobby. Fly fishing is a sport that requires a variety of equipment and clothing, so it was essential to package the rods, reels, waders, boots and fly-tying station into the car in a luxurious, accessible and elegant way – and the end result is truly extraordinary.”

The interior of the refreshment case is trimmed in Linen leather, and contains up to three metal flasks and a set of Mulliner fine-china tableware, as well as a separate food storage compartment. With a quilted leather finish on top, it can also be removed entirely and used as additional seating. Waders and boots are conveniently stowed in a hand-crafted and Saddle- leather-wrapped wood trunk, lined with hardwearing neoprene material to keep the items in a waterproof environment after use. Of course, all three units can be removed from the Bentayga’s boot whenever maximum luggage space is required. Waterproof boot-floor and rear-sill-protection covers are discreetly integrated into the rear of the Bentayga Fly Fishing by Mulliner, as is an electronic dehumidifier unit to ensure the area remains fresh and dry.

The combination of fine craftsmanship, using skills that have been handed down through generations, alongside engineering expertise and cutting-edge technology is unique to UK luxury car brands such as Bentley.

It provides a true Bentley experience, even in the most challenging environments and takes luxury to new places, unrestrained by climate, terrain or conditions. It offers the widest range of on- and off-road drive settings of any vehicle via Bentley’s Drive Dynamics Mode and optional Responsive Off-Road Setting. Up to eight modes are available, allowing drivers, at the simple turn of a dial, to select the perfect dynamic set-up for any surface or road condition. This versatility is complemented by Bentley Dynamic Ride (electrically activated 48V active roll control) and Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS). The Responsive Off-Road Settings allow the customer to select the appropriate vehicle settings for a wide range of offroad surfaces, while the Driver Information Panel displays information on pitch, roll, wheel articulation, steering angle, compass bearing and altitude. As with all Bentleys, the Bentayga comes with multi-mode air suspension. The Bentayga driver has four different modes to choose from: High 2, High 1, Normal and Low. High 2, for example, can be manually selected when tackling more severe off-road surfaces. Customers can also lower the rear suspension via a switch in the boot, to ease loading and trailer hitching.

Jaguar Classic

Announces Xkss Launch And Lightweight E-Type Race Plans

Jaguar Classic confirms limited edition continuation XKSS to make world debut in North

America in 2016 Lightweight E-type chassis #15 to make racing debut at Le Mans Classic (10-12 July 2016), driven by presenter and journalist Chris Harris Jaguar Classic today announces that the hotly-anticipated continuation Jaguar XKSS will receive its world debut presentation in November this year in California, North America. The presentation will coincide with the opening of the Los Angeles Auto Show.* Production of the ultra-exclusive continuation Jaguar XKSS will be limited to just nine exam-ples, hand-crafted by Jaguar Classic expert technicians and manufactured to the exact same specification as those produced in 1957. Often referred to as the world’s first supercar, Jaguar originally made the XKSS as a road-going version of the Le Mans winning D-type, and cars built in ’57 were originally earmarked for export to the U.S., but disaster struck and a number were lost to the Browns Lane fire of the same year. Now, 59 years later, Jaguar will build the nine ‘lost’ XKSS sports cars for a select group of established collectors and customers.

143

Tim Hannig, Director of Jaguar Land Rover Classic, said: “The continuation XKSS reaffirms our commitment to nurture the passion and enthusiasm for Jaguar’s illustrious past by offering exceptional cars, services, parts and experiences.” All nine continuation XKSS are now sold, with first deliveries to customers planned for early 2017. The expertise garnered by the Jaguar Classic team in producing the business’s first contin-uation model – the Lightweight E-type launched in 2015, will be enhanced in the production process developed for the 2017 XKSS. Lightweight E-type chassis number 15 is one of the famous ‘Missing Six’ produced as contin-uation models in 2015. Owned by Stratstone, chassis number 15 will make its racing debut this month at the Le Mans Classic Circuit de la Sarthe on Saturday 09 July. The fascinating story of the Lightweight E-type dates back to February 1963 and the intended 18-car ‘Special GT E-type’ race car project from that time. Only 12 of the 18 were built and delivered by the Browns Lane competitions department between 1963 and 1964, which gave rise to the infamous ‘Missing Six’. These missing chassis numbers – 13 to 18 – were found in 2014, and so the modern-day production by Jaguar Land Rover’s new Special Vehicle Op-erations division’s Jaguar Classic, got underway. The modern incarnation of the Lightweight E-type saw Jaguar Classic deploy modern itera-tions of the company’s original 1960s tooling and production methods.

Life. It’s not about figures. It’s about feelings. The moments that feed your soul. The occasions that take your breath away. The instances that leave you speechless. These are the moments we live for. Replete with world-leading aluminium body technology, skilled hand craftsmanship, the six-cylinder XK engine with its aluminium block, wide angle aluminium cylinder head and dry sump lubrication (de-rived from the Le-Mans winning D-type of the 1950s), the 2015 Lightweight E-type is both original and special in every way. The cars have been delivered as period competition vehicles, fully compliant with FIA homol-ogation for historic motorsport purposes. All of the ‘Missing Six’ are built to period-exact dimensions and specifications, ensuring absolute authenticity and a modern-day build to the highest quality standards. Journalist and television presenter Chris Harris will pilot Lightweight E-type chassis number 15 in its race debut at Le Mans Classic this weekend as part of the Jaguar Classic Challenge. www.jaguar.com

“Creation is an uncontrolled muscle” according to Arik Levy (born 1963)

Arik Levy For Hennessy WORDS: Arik Levy

Since its foundation, more than 250 years ago, our Maison has never stopped reinventing itself. Driven by their passion for the exceptional, 2 families, the Hennessys and the Fillioux, share this adventure, relentlessly thriving for perfection and always ready to face new challenges. While preparing to pass the legacy in to the hands of his nephew, current Master Blender and Taster Yann Fillioux wanted to create a unique cognac. Hennessy 8 was born. Yann Fillioux has worked with Hennessy for 50 years, raising the art of blending to the highest level and combining his exceptional talent with creativity and consistency, passion and rigor, avant-garde daring and uncompromising loyalty to the house’s history and to his predecessors.

Artist, technician, photographer, designer, video artist, Levy’s skills are multi-disciplinary and his work can be seen in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide.

For half a century, he has been tasting and testing Hennessy cognac, innovating while protecting, developing and improving it. Hennessy 8 is the culmination of his impressive lifework. It also represents a transfer from one generation to the next that has long been in preparation. Yann Fillioux has always believed that the importance of a heritage like the one he has tended for so many decades lies above all in its ability to be transmitted and enriched by his successors. So we see that Hennessy 8 is both timeless and contemporary of a new generation of Master Blender and Taster, Renaud Fillioux de Gironde, future successor to his uncle Yann Fillioux. Renaud is the 8th generation of the Fillioux family, present within Hennessy since 1800, and who will be writing a new chapter of the Hennessy saga. The fruit of 5 years of work, and the synthesis of 250 years centuries of savoir-faire, Hennessy 8 is the symbol of this legacy. It celebrates the continuity within generations and talents.

These values are summed up by a single number: 8. 8: the number of generations not only of the Hennessy family but also of the Fillioux family, the Maison Master Blenders. Yann Fillioux represents the 7th generation and his dauphin and nephew Renaud Fillioux de Gironde will represent the 8th; 8: the number of exceptional eaux-de-vie used in Hennessy 8; 8: the symbol of perfection. According to Yann Fillioux, Hennessy 8 is “absolute perfection and absolutely simple.” Finally, it is a hymn to freedom and originality: the creators of Hennessy 8 were free to develop it without worrying about replication. It is a unique masterpiece, the only one of its kind. A fitting carafe was needed for this cognac fashioned by time, people and nature. This creation was entrusted to Arik Lévy, an artist who has collaborated with Hennessy for many years and whose approach is perfectly in tune with Hennessy’s values and “soul.” It took 3 years to develop and realize this gem, the ultimate expression of minerality, the work of nature, the importance of time and human genius. Everything in Arik Lévy’s design for Hennessy 8 has a meaning. It includes a number of eloquent references to Hennessy’s history and values. First of all, the carafe: a crystal sculpture with 8 inset rings. Each ring represents one of the 8 generations and 8 eaux-de-vie. Together with the other rings, it creates an impression of movement and constant change, enhanced by the piece’s symbolism: the chain of successive generations and the harmonious blend of eaux-de-vie in a crystalline matrix that sparkles with reflected light. The carafe is made of hand-blown Baccarat crystal. Each carafe is a feat of technical prowess - a combination of “hot savoir-faire” and “cold savoir-faire” - and a real achievement for the master glassmaker who followed Arik Lévy’s design to make it. A copper silk ribbon with a “H” seal circles the carafe’s neck, emphasizing its majestic bearing. A well-known savoir-faire mastered and realized by Guerlain, the famous French Perfume Maison.

Best known publicly for his sculptures – such as his signature Rock pieces –, his installations, limited editions and design, Levy nevertheless feels “The world is about people, not objects.” An emblem of beauty, purity and perfection, the carafe stopper is engraved with oral motifs that symbolically echo the 8 rings. A precious chest holds and protects the carafe, cradling it like a nourishing “shell” rich in natural elements and minerals. The artist used staves from La Sarrazine, Hennessy cooperage, to make the chest. Inside the chest, each of the 25 layers of wood represents 10 years of Hennessy’s history and corresponds to the 25 layers on the outside of the chest. The chest refers to Hennessy and its expertise: the Maison still makes some of its own barrels and keeps pushing the boundaries on the distillation process. It also recalls the Maison origins: the chest is cut irregularly from top to bottom to symbolize the Charente River, with a “bed” of copper glowing from inside. This work of art is an ode to nature, a historic setting and human creativity, designed by Arik Lévy and signed by Hennessy, the mark of excellence! Every single detail of Arik Lévy’s ingenious, powerfully evocative design has been carefully thought out. He has even created a complete, finely crafted “tool box”. In it are among other things a set of Riedel tasting glasses, a fusil (pipette), a carnet describing the genesis and spirit of Hennessy 8 and the Maison values. The key for Hennessy 8 chest will also be handed over, opening this exceptional chest...

Maserati And Giovanni Soldini A Massive Technological Challenge

The 2016 season is getting underway on something of a high note for Giovanni Soldini and his partners with the move from their previous monohull to the new Maserati Multi70 trimaran. This faster, more modern craft will allow Soldini and his crew to tackle new records and compete in prestige competitions of the likes of the Rolex Middle Sea Race in October and the RORC Transatlantic Race in November. Flanking Giovanni Soldini this new season are Maserati, returning as main sponsor for the fifth consecutive year, and UnipolSai Assicurazioni which will be playing a more prominent sponsorship role in the project than last season. Also renewing their support as official challenge suppliers are Ermenegildo Zegna for clothing and Boero Bartolomeo S.p.A. which supplies hull paint and enamels. After an extremely busy and satisfying three years that saw them clock up an impressive number of nautical miles with the monohull Maserati VOR70, Soldini and his team will henceforth be sailing aboard Maserati Multi70, a cuttingedge, very high performance trimaran capable of making extremely fast speeds.

“This craft’s innovative character is all down to her appendages. Team Gitana transformed the starboard side with an Lfoil and got her flying but always in sheltered waters. We are now trying to find out if and how it is possible to do the same in a moderate swell. Clearly that will involve a lot of research and development work that we’ve only just begun but what we’ve seen so far is really enthusing us already”. Three challenges are scheduled for this season a MonacoPorto Cervo record attempt, the Rolex Middle Sea Race and RORC Transatlantic Race. In September, Maserati Multi70 will be on standby in Monte Carlo for the perfect weather window for an attempt to set a new multi reference time between Monaco and Porto Cervo, a 195nautical mile route. The current record is held by the monohull Esimit Europa 2 which covered the distance in 10 hours, 13 minutes and 42 seconds in 2012, making an average speed of 19 knots. www.maserati.co.uk
