HENCHMAN TOPIARY AWARDS RETURN FOR 2025

TO CELEBRATE BRITAIN’S BEST GARDEN SCULPTORS Talented topiarists from across the UK and Europe are being called upon to sharpen their shears for the Henchman Topiary Awards 2025. Following the resounding success of the inaugural awards in 2024, the popular competition founded by leading ladder garden specialist Henchman is set to return this spring – and will be expanding to accept entrants from across Europe. Launching on 20th March 2025, the Henchman Topiary Awards will celebrate the art of transforming foliage into stunning living sculptures. This year, the competition expands across multiple countries, giving topiary enthusiasts from across Europe

the chance to showcase their skills. The awards will once again feature two categories – Best Professional Topiary, for seasoned topiarists and horticultural professionals, and Best Home Garden Creation, for passionate gardeners and enthusiasts who have mastered the craft in their own green spaces. With separate winners crowned in both the UK and Europe for each category, entrants will have the opportunity to earn recognition for their craftsmanship and take home some fantastic prizes. A panel of top topiary and horticulture experts will judge the entries. Returning this year are Andy Bourke, professional topiarist and popular influencer known as ‘The

Hedge Barber,’ and Michael Buck, Head of Horticulture at Creepers Nursery. Joining them are new judges Petra Hoyer Millar, Editor of The Dirt News and runner-up in last year’s Home Gardener category, and Patrick Salembier, President of EBTS France. The champions in each category will be awarded a Henchman ladder of their choice, ensuring they can continue sculpting their masterpieces with the best tools available. The competition will be open until the end of May, providing entrants with plenty of time to refine their masterpiece, with the winners being announced at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival on Saturday 5th July 2025. Last year’s competition attracted over 75 entrants, including some extraordinary displays of skill. West Sussex-based Harrie Carnochan won the Professional Gardener category for his precisely sculpted, symmetrical designs, while David Hawson from Aberdeenshire claimed victory in the Home Gardener category with his intricate hedge scene featuring countryside and marine creatures, inspired by Moby Dick. Owen Simpson, Managing Director at Henchman, said: “We were blown away by the stunning works of art we received in the inaugural Henchman Topiary Awards. The

The Judges Andy Bourke – The Hedge Barber – Professional Topiarist and Online Influencer Andy has worked in horticulture for over 10 years and is a professional hedge cutter and topiary artist. Using traditional hand cutting methods, Andy has worked on small intricate topiary designs as well as larger, organic shapes. Andy is better known online at The Hedge Barber – creating aesthetically pleasing videos of his topiary creations. Michael Buck – Head of Horticulture at Creepers Nursery Michael started in horticulture while trying to forge a career in football, 17 years ago, which saw him experience different sectors within the industry. For the past 10 years, Michael has spent his time working on many exciting nursery and garden projects across the UK and Europe, and has since become the Head of Horticulture at Creepers Nursery

Petra is a gardener, horticultural journalist and editor of The Dirt News. A fan of all things topiary, she is the creator of a large cloud-pruned yew hedge and shapes, for which she was runner up in the 2024 Henchman Topiary Awards in the Home Gardener category. Retrained from her economic background, she has enough RHS horticultural diplomas to know how to propagate, plant and prune her way through anything green. Patrick Salembier – President of EBTS France Patrick is the president of European Boxwood and Topiary Society France (EBTS France) and the editor of Buis et Topiaires. Passionate about sharing his knowledge, he published The Boxwood Manual in 2017. Since 2012, Patrick has also been the designer of the gardens at Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, bringing expertise and creativity to one of France’s most renowned landscapes. NEW LIFE FOR THE ‘HANGING GARDENS OF BASINGSTOKE’ All services were routed through the building’s unique one-metredeep floor voids, allowing water supply and control cables to reach each zone with minimal disruption. Irrigation zones were mapped to reflect planting types, solar exposure, and rootzone depths. Working within a protected landscape presented challenges, particularly around retained hardscape elements. Original pathways were preserved, requiring precision installation around fixed features. Newly introduced trees were carefully matched to 30-yearold specimens to ensure continuity of scale and character. Waterscapes also supplied and installed the water feature

The Grade II-listed Mountbatten House - now rebranded as Plant on the Basing View business park in Basingstoke has undergone a comprehensive refurbishment, including the restoration of its iconic roof gardens originally designed in the 1970s by renowned garden designer James Russell. Listed among the top 15 modern buildings in the UK, it now boasts BREEAM Outstanding and WELL Platinum certifications, placing it firmly at the forefront of sustainable redevelopment. This heritage-led transformation aimed to enhance both the original building and gardens while introducing contemporary functionality. The client envisioned a landscape scheme that would honour Russell’s design legacy, meet modern environmental standards, and create a welcoming space for office workers and visitors alike. Studio Knight Stokoe led the landscape design, collaborating with Waterscapes Ltd and Main

Contractor C. Field Construction to bring this ambitious vision to life. Central to the refurbishment was a site-specific irrigation system designed to support long-term planting success across complex microclimates. Waterscapes Ltd installed a bespoke network of sub-surface and on-surface drip irrigation to serve the varied planting across six-storey gardens. The system is fully automated via a Rain Bird IVM central controller, supported by real-time moisture and weather sensors to ensure minimal water waste while maintaining optimal plant health. “Respecting the integrity of the original 1970s vision while integrating modern watersensitive design was at the heart of this project,” says Paul Jeffery, Managing Director at Waterscapes Ltd. “The irrigation system isn’t just sustainable—it’s site-specific, adaptive, and built to support longterm planting success”.

The revitalised roof gardens dubbed “The Hanging Gardens of Basingstoke” - now feature over 22,500 new plants and 86 trees, enhancing biodiversity while creating an inclusive space for occupants and visitors. Hedges v Fences – we all know which is best

It’s no secret that a living hedge has many many advantages over fencing. First and foremost a hedge offers shelter for a wide range of species – including humans – seeking respite from cold winds or unrelenting sunshine. And then of course, there is the year round visual appeal of a hedge. Particularly with species that offer exciting seasonal changes such as blossoms, berries and colourful foliage. For more formal garden designs, the architectural appeal of a beautifully trimmed evergreen hedge, provides the perfect backdrop for artworks, leisure facilities and/or planting schemes.

1. Root disturbance in growing season

Gardening tradition says that larger plants such as trees and hedges should be transplanted when they are dormant. TIME TO DITCH TIMBER AND SWITCH TO COMPOSITE Composite panels are an increasingly popular alternative to timber, offering a combination of lasting looks and low maintenance. Here, Patrick Guest, Managing Director at Birkdale, discusses the advantages of composite fence panel solutions. Timber panels have been a firm favourite amongst fencers and homeowners for some years, thanks to their relative ease of installation, aesthetics and low cost. However, with these positives come drawbacks such as their short lifespan, their relative fragility and the maintenance they require. In contrast, composite panels offer a longer lasting, lower maintenance option that is just as affordable.

Lifespan While timber fence panels deliver a limited lifespan of up to 10 years with regular treatment and

maintenance, a composite panel is engineered to resist the worst of the elements. Birkdale’s panels are made from either a mixture of virgin and recycled high-density polypropylene (HDPE) and rice husks, or woodplastic composite (WPC) in the case of the DuraPost VISTA® panel range. These sustainable solutions won’t rot and aren’t susceptible to damage from insects. For these reasons, Birkdale guarantees its composite products for 15 years.

Durability To make timber panels light and cost-efficient, they are often cut very thin, increasing their susceptibility to wind and impact damage. WORRIED ABOUT CONDENSATION? Lithium grease: This is the general solution to stop any small amounts of water tripping in 240V circuits. We’ve concluded that smearing lithium grease into the bulb holder and on the connectors of the bulb can act as a seal to prevent water produced by condensation from making contact with the bulb holder. This is particularly effective for GU10 bulb holders which mimic a cup or bowl. It can also be used outside the fittings to provide further protection to a seal.

A very common occurrence in outdoor lights installed in the UK is, you guessed it, condensation. As a lighting company, supplying professional outdoor lighting, we usually get asked various questions about condensation and how it can be prevented.

moisture build-up, such as a drainage hole. Predrilled holes for screws can also act as secondary drainage holes. Sensor components, such as PIR (motion sensors) and photocell (dusk-to-dawn), may show signs of condensation but this usually will not affect their function.

Condensation is usually caused by heat generated by the lamp and a fluctuating temperature due to the cooler air outside creating moisture within part of the fitting. A common misconception is that this will always affect the life or function of the fitting and is caused by the product not being weatherproof. Most of the time, there’s no need to panic! It’s important to say that condensation doesn’t occur in ALL outdoor lights, which is why it can be worrying when noticed in a small number of fittings. This article will lay out our thoughts and findings based on 15+ years of supplying outdoor and garden lighting to help you understand how this can be fixed or avoided. Checking up on your outdoor lights throughout the year, especially with the inconsistent UK weather, is highly advised. Most lights have a built-in method to alleviate

During a ‘condensation check’, it’s good to check that all parts of the lights are intact, sealed and fastened securely where applicable. In some cases, condensation will still occur, but there are things you can do.

‘So, what can I do to prevent this?’ Silica gel: A packet of silica gel (such as the ones received with a pair of shoes) can be placed within the light. All Lumena spotlights are provided with 1 or more packs of silica gel. This absorbs any moisture inside the fitting, preventing condensation. When these appear full, change to a new pack. Changing lamps: when time comes to replace a lamp, or even when initially installing the lamp it’s best to do this on a dry day to prevent any moisture entering the light fitting.

Check for damage: With outdoor lights and components (e.g. photocell or PIR sensors), it’s important to check that watertight seals are intact and not damaged. If they are, the condensation build-up can aggravate. Any good manufacturer will hold spares of these components. If a system or light is acting unusually or tripping, condensation may not be the only persisting problem. This could be a result of loose or non-watertight connections elsewhere in the cable run. Magic Gel is highly recommended for creating an IP68 cable connection within junction boxes. If you have any concerns, you can consult a reputable lighting supplier first before hiring an electrician.

“GREEN ON THE GROUND”: MILAN ‘HEALING CITY’ TAKES ROOT AT THE POLICLINICO

A ‘healing’ Nature that weaves through the pathways between hospital buildings, offering wellbeing and environmental comfort to patients, staff, and visitors in a place historically dedicated to health. This is the vision of LAND for the regeneration of the open spaces at the Policlinico di Milano: a project that began on March 25 with the planting of the first trees, a true gift to the city in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the international landscape consultancy led by Andreas Kipar. With permeability and ecological continuity, this part of the city, with 500 years of history, will regain its pulse, thanks to a widespread natural environment that will harmonize with the soonto-be-created Therapeutic Garden above the Sforza Pavilion. Humanizing with Nature one of Italy’s most important hospital centers. This is the primary goal of the landscape-environmental regeneration masterplan for the

open spaces at the Ospedale Policlinico di Milano. Spanning an area of 8.9 hectares, the intervention by LAND Italia includes the removal of 3,122 square meters of impermeable surfaces, which will be replaced by 1,870 square meters of green spaces and 1,970 square meters of green walls, along with the planting of 100 new trees. The first two specimens of Lagerstroemia indica were planted during the official launch of ‘Green on the Ground’ on Tuesday, March 25, the Day of Pardon, at the Ospedale Policlinico, with the participation of key city and regional authorities. A special day that celebrates 500 years of history while looking toward the future. To mark its 35th anniversary, LAND paid tribute to the Fondazione Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico by gifting the two trees to the city. This marked the beginning of the second phase of the project, focused on the first area of implementation in

collaboration with HW Style and Consorzio SIS. Greenery becomes the catalyst for an integrated and hierarchical system that connects the spaces, facilitates orientation, and offers shade and shelter to passersby, with protected pedestrian paths and smoother crossings. A capillary Nature creates environmental, social, and economic value. This ambitious project started in 2023 and remains ongoing. The council wanted to improve public spaces by enhancing their visual appeal, creating new local habitats, and increasing biodiversity. These areas needed to support a wide range of species, particularly pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The council also wanted to improve soil health and reduce reliance on chemical treatments. The council wants to create wildflower meadows in their country parks, urban parks, and new local nature reserves. It also wanted to enhance the area’s visual appeal with stunning floral displays in flower beds and roundabouts, enabling residents to appreciate its beauty and encouraging community engagement. They wanted to replace traditional annual planting schemes with sustainable wildflower areas to reduce maintenance costs. Wildflower areas are cost-effective, requiring only annual mowing and eliminating the need for annual replanting, which was a priority for the budget-conscious council, enabling their resources to be utilised elsewhere.

WAKEHURST PLACE – FIVE YEARS ON

In 2018, Addagrip was proud to contribute to an important surfacing project at Wakehurst Place—a 500acre wild botanic garden in West Sussex, owned by the National Trust and managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Home to the Millennium Seed Bank, the site is internationally recognised for its role in plant conservation and research. The project involved renovating over 450 linear metres of footpaths in Bethlehem Woods, an area requiring a surface that could withstand heavy use, offer year-round accessibility, and complement the sensitive woodland surroundings. However, at Brett Landscaping we have been championing an underappreciated aspect of installing an effective fit for purpose SuDS system that is right for the environment it serves – efficient longevity.

As local authorities and government are looking at ways to tackle a highways repair backlog that is estimated to require more than £17bn of investment, Brett Landscaping has undertaken research to demonstrate the longterm effectiveness of Concrete Block Permeable Paving (CBPP), offering a feasible proven solution for local authorities to the pothole maintenance backlog if used on small estate roads. CBPP can play a valuable role on the SuDS management train for high traffic areas. They act as a source control if water can infiltrate back to ground, they can attenuate the surface water discharge, as well as

clean the water and discharge at a controlled rate once a storm event has passed. These pavements can replicate the natural environment by absorbing a 5mm rainfall event with no discharge from the system and cleaning the surface water flow via their two levels of water treatment. However, there are several misconceptions on the joint maintenance performance of CBPP that can block the successful adoption of the systems under Section 38 agreements, preventing their wider use as a major tool in the SuDS Management train and mitigation of surface water flooding. APB Treecare, a family-run tree care business based in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, has been steadily growing since its establishment in 2014 by Tony Boland. Using the lift also means less physical strain on the team. “Climbing trees all day takes its toll, especially as we’re not getting any younger,” Tony says. “The Leguan has taken a lot of the climbing out of the equation, reducing fatigue and the risk of injury. It’s safer, quicker, and more efficient, and it allows us to get jobs done with minimal physical stress.”

In addition to enhancing productivity, Avant machines have proved invaluable during storm damage recovery. “The storms this year were a real test,” says Tony. “Without the Avant, we would have spent half a day or more clearing debris. With this machine, we can clear it in just an hour or two, making a huge difference.” In June, APB Treecare expanded its fleet with the purchase of a Leguan 225 Spider Lift, available through Avant UK and Ireland. Tony had previously hired the lift during the summer months and was immediately impressed. “After just one day of using the Leguan, I knew it was the right machine for us,” he explains. “For the challenging terrains we often work on, the Leguan excels where other lifts fall short. It’s perfect for steep, uneven ground, which is a common feature of many of our job sites.”

Its automatic levelling system ensures that the lift is perfectly balanced within minutes, allowing the team to quickly get to work. “We press the auto-level button, and the machine does all the work. Without the Leguan, it would take us at least 30 minutes to climb and set up for a job. With it, we’re up and working in no time,” says Tony.

The Leguan 225 also offers the flexibility of operating from the basket or the ground, which has helped improve team efficiency. “When we’re working in pairs, one person can focus on cutting while the other clears debris.
