ALC CREATES 4500M² YEAR ROUND ACTIVITY AREA FOR HOLIDAY PARK

regulations. Choosing artificial lawn as the primary ground covering not only ensured a softer, gentler surface, but it also looked fresh and exciting all year round.”

The area included play equipment such as high ropes, sandpits, climbing walls, trampolines and a bag jump. An additional 35mm impact-absorbing Grassflex shock pad underlay was installed to meet the requirements of a 1.5-metre critical fall height. This increased the complexity of the installation as a whole, as the contours were so different, but the result was a seamless finish that added to the overall inviting nature of the area.

An investment in the installation of 4500m² of artificial lawn to create a safe, attractive, clean space for families to relax and play come rain or shine has transformed an area of a holiday park in Kent from a no-go zone to a popular hang-out. Prior to the installation, the area was actively avoided by many families as it looked scruffy and was peppered by rough, uneven patches due to the contours of the area. Artificial Lawn Company was given the mission to turn it into an area that could be used all year round.

As well as uneven ground and awkward contours, the area had poor drainage, so it was often overly muddy or extremely dry and hard, creating unsuitable surfaces for children to use the play equipment. To rectify the problem, the existing natural grass was removed and created a gentler landscape using type 1 stone. The sub base was then prepared using crushed granite, and geotextile, and the grass was finished with kiln-dried sand infill.

“The space was crying out for greater usage, but unfortunately, the state of the ground was offputting to the hundreds of families who visited the holiday park every year,” commented ALC’s surveyor and sales professional, Sam Baylis. “It was an area that needed to withstand a lot of footfall, as well as comply with health and safety

The area was then finished with ALC’s resilient Active Lawn product, which incorporates W-shaped fibres that provide excellent bounce back and durability. Artificial Lawn Company also created a dog agility area and an archery area using its Pedigree Lawn, which is specifically manufactured for use with pets and is laid annually at the Crufts show in Birmingham’s NEC.

TG ESCAPES PROVIDE MODULAR TIMBER FRAME SPORTS PAVILION ON

BEHALF OF THE UNIVERSITY OF READING

The sports ground and pavilion in Shinfield, Berkshire is a joint enterprise between Reading University and the Parish Council. The primary intention is to encourage more young and diverse people to play cricket in a bid to make the sport more inclusive and accessible to everyone. However, on a broader level, the sports ground will provide a safe space in which children can meet and play and, when the cricket season is over, the pitches will be used for football. The pavilion building will provide shelter from the elements for spectators and changing facilities for the teams and will also be used as a daycare centre for dementia sufferers during the week.

The pavilion, created by TG Escapes, provides two team changing rooms, changing facilities for officials, showers and WCs, a kitchen and a large club room. In addition, the double-pitched roof has been extended to provide a canopy to cover the large viewing terrace which has been orientated to avoid sun glare during late match play. TG Escapes commissioned Terra Contracts to deliver the external works which included a lined parking area and curbing along with external lighting, bicycle sheds and bin stores.

The project was completed in only 16 weeks which was achieved through precise coordination between the external works and build teams. This included a change to the gradient of the site in order to achieve DDA requirements.

The building work was the third and final phase of the project which had already seen the installation of the pitches and secure boundaries and a

significant array of trees and shrubs. The basic design of the building had been approved when planning permission was granted some years earlier, but TG Escapes were able to redesign certain elements to improve the experience of the users and to enhance the EPC rating. All improvements were cost-neutral as the project was subject to strict budget constraints. Timing was also of the essence as there was an important deadline: the building had to be ready for the first day of the cricket season. OXENWOOD COMMENT ON GARDEN DESIGN

Gardens can be a space of great beauty and inspirational planting, but they also provide a place to relax and switch off in peace and quiet, to spend time with family, or to enjoy entertaining friends on long summer evenings.

Creating a sense of place and a haven in your garden to relax and unwind is no mean feat and requires a lot of thought, planning and care.

While personal taste and styles vary greatly, one of the key elements to transform your garden into a true oasis is quality outdoor furniture. Garden furniture goes far beyond a

practical level of simply providing somewhere to sit. It can also be a statement piece and an eye-catching design feature, and so requires careful consideration to make it part of the wider garden scheme.

Distinctly different areas can be created within one garden by using planters, pergolas and an avenue

14 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine GARDEN DESIGN
Comment from Charlie Alexander, founder of Oxenwood.

of trees as dividers to add levels, height and structure, as well as partitions and screens. Furniture can also provide a fantastic means of creating a different feel in each area. For example, a smaller table, like the Oxenwood Aubrey Circular, instantly creates a peaceful pocket tucked away on a patio to enjoy coffee and croissants, whilst reading the newspaper on a Saturday morning. In contrast, the larger Hagen, provides the perfect setting for entertaining friends, hosting alfresco dinner parties and relaxing long after sundown. Time spent gathered around a garden dining table enjoying good food and drink while creating memories with others that can be treasured for years to

come requires a centrepiece of a table. Something durable and built to last a lifetime, and can even be passed down through families, taking the memories and tales with it. When choosing a spot for a terrace to home any garden furniture, you may also want to consider how you can make the space private. Firstly, choose somewhere that isn’t overlooked and is ideally set away from the house so it feels like a place to escape to. There’s something really special about walking through the garden to a terrace and adding a path that weaves between plantings and borders can instantly add a secret garden feel.

Outdoor kitchens have become very popular in recent years and are the

next level in barbecuing and alfresco dining. Again, consider placement when creating an outdoor kitchen –being the chef can often be a lonely business at gatherings having to tend to food while guests socialise. Placing an outdoor kitchen on a large terrace with enough space for a dining table too can overcome this. However, the key to a sociable outdoor kitchen is in the design. Oxenwood offers a bespoke design service meaning you can add fridges, extended worktops, sinks and pizza ovens making sure it is far more than just a grilling space, and instead becomes a place for guests to gather.

BEAUTIFUL POTS AND PLANTERS

Torc make everything from their studio in the British Isles creating beautiful pots and planters to enhance any outdoor (or indoor) space.

Working alongside a talented team of artisans this family run business really specializes in textures, scale and especially bespoke design. Their pots are shaped by hand until they take on their own unique form - no two pots are ever quite the same. When we are surrounded by so much that is mass produced Torc believe there is a real appreciation for hand-crafted objects.

The design side of their business is getting busier all the time with landscape architects and garden designers alike realizing just how

much expertise this company has to offer with a wealth of experience in design and problem solving to bring to the table. Torc welcome the opportunity to be involved at the design stage and are happy to contribute ideas when requested. Frequently being commissioned to provide planter designs and outdoor furniture as a one-off template for both commercial and residential spaces.

Launching their new contemporary shaped water bowl this month was a good example of how far they can go – the diameter of this piece can be offered up to 3m wide. Their green credentials are pretty impressive too.

CARIBBEAN BLINDS CASE STUDY: BANCROFT LEE LANDSCAPES

In January 2023, Caribbean Blinds worked with landscaping professionals, Bancroft Lee Landscapes, to install a stylish outdoor shading solution at a residential property in Cheshire. The result was a fully covered sunken seating area within a multi-zoned open plan garden that can be used all year round.

The client

The client – a couple with two young children – recently had their garden landscaped by a designer who created the overall concept, including the sunken seating area. Bancroft Lee Landscapes saw

the opportunity to add one of Caribbean Blinds’ Outdoor Living Pods™ to this element and mocked up a digital design. This was then approved, and the client chose the colours for the Pod itself, as well as for the fabric for the 4 screens.

The finished result

Our ‘Deluxe’ Outdoor Living Pod™ was selected due to its flexibility – in particular the ability to incorporate additional uprights and integrated screens to the sides which gave the project a more streamlined look.

Expertly installed over a sunken seating area within a contemporary

open plan garden with a multizoned design consisting of an outdoor kitchen and dining space, the Pod complemented the stunning landscaped area and helped create an ideal space for the client to relax in all year round, due to the ability to control the elements.

Due to the complex nature of the project in terms of where the posts of the structure were situated, technical drawings were provided for final sign off. There was also a change in design specification in the initial stages with the positioning of the inset and additional post uprights.

20 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine GARDEN DESIGN

Detailed support was provided throughout to ensure that the precise nature of the project worked within the tolerances of the structure. We advised on various elements during the process – from when the first sketch was submitted by Bancroft Lee Landscapes in June 2022 to the order placement three months later, via our trade account manager and our technical team. The overall lead time on this product was 8 weeks, with installation taking 2 days to complete.

Sam Bancroft, Director at Bancroft Lee Landscapes commented: “We attended a training day at Caribbean Blinds HQ before we built our first Pod supplied by the company as subcontractors for a local garden designer within a high-end modern garden we were building. Similarly, we also worked as a subcontractor for this particular project.

Near completion, we suggested installing the Deluxe Outdoor Living Pod™ over the sunken seating area we had built. The client was shown pictures of Pods that we had previously built, as well as samples so they could see the quality of materials used, and subsequently chose the colour of the blind they wanted.

The quality of the Pod is outstanding, and every little detail has been considered, including hidden fixings and integrated cabling and guttering. The product has completely changed the already amazing space, giving it a real focal point, looking out from the kitchen. We installed blinds, lighting and heating within the Pod, meaning it can be used all year round. Both ourselves and our clients are extremely happy with the outcome and hope to include many more Pods in our future designs.”

The Outdoor Living Pod™ explained…

Ingeniously designed for those who want to live life outdoors, the innovative rotating louvered roof offers an open-air alfresco feel when left fully open, and ensures a completely water, wind and even snow-tight roof when closed. Optional windproof screens, ambient LED perimeter lighting and instant infra-red heaters mean a cosy and pleasant environment can be achieved all year round.

Built for durability and longevity, the low-maintenance Outdoor Living Pod™ is constructed from super-strong, corrosion-resistant, powder coated aluminium and adapts to any outdoor lounging or dining space.

SUSTAINABLE PAVING

As the global awareness of environmental issues continues to grow, sustainable practices have become paramount across various industries. One area where sustainability is making a significant impact is in construction and landscaping, specifically in the realm of paving. In the UK, the paving industry has undergone a remarkable transformation, with a spotlight on eco-friendly alternatives to conventional paving materials. Bradstone, a well-established brand that has taken substantial strides towards reducing its carbon footprint while maintaining the quality and aesthetic appeal that customers have come to expect.

Bradstone’s commitment to environmental responsibility is shown through its innovative Eco Paving product range. This range not only highlights Bradstone’s dedication to sustainability but also shows the brand’s determination to create products that align with a greener future. The introduction of ECO paving brings forth a pivotal shift in the industry, addressing the environmental concerns associated with traditional paving solutions.

One of the standout features of Bradstone’s ECO paving is the impressive reduction in carbon emissions. By incorporating advanced manufacturing techniques

and materials, Bradstone has managed to reduce its carbon footprint by more than 20%. This reduction is not merely a statistic; it translates to tangible benefits for the environment. For instance, a typical 30-square-meter patio paved with ECO products yields a carbon saving equivalent to the positive impact generated by three mature trees over the course of a year. This reduction in carbon emissions significantly contributes to the fight against climate change, making each paved area a testament to the brand’s commitment to a sustainable future.

REVOLUTIONIZING CONCRETE PRODUCTION: THE SUSTAINABLE AND INNOVATIVE METHODS OF SCHELLEVIS

Concrete is often seen as a material which is one of the largest contributors to climate change, but there are great changes underway in the industry. Schellevis® has been committed to reducing the environmental impact of our products and production processes for many years. Despite the negative reputation that concrete has when it comes to sustainability, we believe that with the right practices and approach, it can be a sustainable material choice.

Our focus is on using natural materials, recycling and reducing emissions from transportation and production. We believe that promoting the use of green spaces and minimising hard landscaping can contribute to sustainability. We love to see outdoor spaces roughly 30% hard landscaping and the rest planted with lush greenery, which will ensure future generations can enjoy healthy outdoor spaces.

The Schellevis® production facility uses expertly-designed machines, with minimal energy requirements and low wastage. Our internal transport largely consists of electrical forklifts and bicycles (we are a Dutch company after all!).

At present, all of our products contain a minimum of 30% recycled concrete. We don’t use any energy sources to cure our products, as they are dried naturally. Schellevis® products are 100% recyclable and any products that do not pass our strict quality control are recycled into aggregate components, for new Schellevis® to be produced. Our sand and gravel is delivered by boat, which is equivalent to 40 deliveries by lorry. We work with suppliers located close to our production facility to reduce transport emissions further.

We take our commitment to sustainability seriously, and our

efforts are independently assessed and certified by third-parties. We have been awarded an NL Greenlabel certification since 2016 and have been certified by the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) since 2022. As one of the first paving manufacturers to achieve CSC certification, we are proud of our commitment to sustainability.

But we are not stopping there. Our focus on sustainability is an ongoing process and we are continually testing and innovating to improve the composition and production of our products, without compromising on quality. For example, we are exploring alternative components to cement to further minimise our impact on nature. We believe that by continuing to prioritise sustainability, we can help create a healthier and more sustainable future for our planet.

ULTRASCAPE CREATES PICTURE PERFECT LANDSCAPES

Multi award-winning Flitch Landscape Design & Build have created a beautiful garden landscape using UltraScape’s market-leading flowable grout.

Background

A beautiful domestic garden and patio in Southey Green in Essex has undergone a transformation thanks to the expertise of Flitch Landscape Design & Build.

The Challenge

It was the homeowners dream to use reclaimed Yorkstone cobbles as part of their design. A robust, but beautiful, grout was required due to constant use and because of the variances in depth, a flowable grout was preferred to save time, and the landscapers knees.

The Solution

Experts at creating unique and contemporary outdoor spaces, Flitch Landscape Design & Build used UltraScape flowpoint to joint the reclaimed Yorkstone cobbles and pavers to create a picture-perfect sidewalk and generous patio.

UltraScape flowpoint is a flowable grout which allows for large areas

of paving to be grouted quickly. Suitable for joints from 3mm to 50mm and as deep as 200mm, flowpoint has been developed over a number of years to provide a durable and aesthetically pleasing finish which will not crack or stain.

With an initial set after just 15 minutes, and a walk on time of one hour, it is unsurprising that flowpoint has become synonymous with fast application, cost-effective and robust jointing.

UltraScape flowpoint is available in two colours – Natural Grey and Charcoal – and four varieties. There is something for all designs and tastes.

Results

The results of this project are clear to see. On the performance of flowpoint, Flitch Landscape Design & Build commented: “UltraScape flowpoint is always our go to product whether it be Yorkstone or Porcelain. It is completely versatile, incredibly durable and makes light work of pointing or grouting.”

To find out more about flowpoint and the other paving installation materials available from UltraScape, please visit ultrascape.co.uk or contact their experts by calling +44 (0) 1827 254402 or emailing ultrascape@instarmac.co.uk.

Re-Elming Britain with Resista® Elms

Over 50 years of breeding and cross breeding has led to the Resista® Elm range. These have fantastic form, leaf colour, vigour and hardiness and have been bred to be 100% resistant to Dutch Elm Disease. Hillier Nurseries are proud to be the sole UK grower and supplier of Resista® Elms consisting of Ulmus ‘New Horizon’, Ulmus Fiorente and Ulmus ‘Rebona’.

Tracing provenence

While they are on the Hillier nursery, each Resista® Elm tree is micro-chipped so they are all traceable. This is important to protect the decades of research and should any problems arise, their provenance can be traced. Tens of thousands of these new resistant Elms have now been planted the length and breadth of the British Isles and in Europe — from Madrid to the Steppes of Russia – with no incident of any succumbing to Dutch Elm Disease.

Protecting an endangered species

A further positive outcome has been the ability of the Elms to become a habitat for the endangered White-letter Hairstreak butterfly that relies on the Elm trees to breed. This once common butterfly experienced a catastrophic decline in population in line with the demise of the native Elm.

Lungs of the city

These Elms screen pollutants out of the air, they easily adapt to urban environment, tolerate stress be it drought, frost, salt, high water, compacted soil – they grow vigorously and they are beautiful: Elms are perfect trees for cities.

Characteristics of Resista® Elms

• 100% resistant to Dutch Elm Disease

• Tolerant of pollution

• Tolerant of salt (making them first class coastal trees)

• Tolerant of drought

• Tolerant of short-term waterlogging

• Very quick establishment

• Fast growing

• Tolerant of weather extremes – hot and cold temperatures

• Great for insects, in particular the endangered White-letter Hairstreak butterfly

Resista® Elm Cultivars

Ulmus ‘Rebona’

Its leaves are a little smaller and darker shades of emerald. This Elm is extremely tolerant of adverse conditions. It will succeed in highly exposed locations, even next to the coast with salt spray.

Ulmus New Horizon

This medium to large tree forms an attractive rounded canopy in maturity. The trunk thickens fast; the dense growing, healthy leaves create a highly aesthetic appearance.

Ulmus ‘Fiorente’

Strikingly beautiful. Its dominant central leader is surrounded by graceful branches that flow and cascade upwards. A hybrid of Ulmus pumila and Ulmus minor.

LET’S TALK PUMPS

Adding water to a project has never been easier. This is because OASE has created complete solutions for installers. This means that everything from the pump to the feature itself is OASE made. OASE can provide the technical knowledge and support on all the products you use.

Let’s talk pumps

Pumps are the beating heart of any water feature. You need to know the right type of pump as well as the right size for your requirements. OASE pumps come in various sizes from 2500 up-to 44000 l/h.

A pump for each type of feature

Not all pumps are created equal. Depending on the effect you’re trying to achieve you’ll need the right pump for the job.

Fountains require pressure to force water through nozzles to produce the spectacular results we expect. Nearly every fountain pump is supplied with at least 1 fountain nozzle and the box will tell you how high and how wide the effect will be.

Feature pumps are based on the same design as fountain pumps but without the larger surrounding cases. The requirement for pressure is the same as for a fountain but as these pumps are mostly used in selfcontained features the risk of the pump blocking is reduced.

The increased pressure these pumps produce also works better when using the narrow diameter pipework often required for water features.

Filter and Waterfall pumps are designed to produce lots of flow and move solid waste to a filter. The large holes in the casing are designed to allow larger particles to pass through without clogging.

To create the waterfall effect on the other page, a 1-metre-wide blade dropping 1 metre into a pond will require 300 litres per minute flow rate. That’s 18,000 LPH to maintain a full sheet of water effect. Don’t forget that taking head loss into account, you will require a pump larger than an 18,000 model to give you 18,000 LPH at the 1m head height.

At OASE we have a dedicated technical team that will help assist you in selecting the correct pump. We never want you to feel overwhelmed or confused and so we are here to help!

Get in touch with our team on enquiries@oase.com or give us a call on 01256 896886

Create wonder with moving water.

EASILY TRANSFORM A SMALL SPACE OR ENHANCE A LARGER BODY OF WATER WITH AN OASE WATER FOUNTAIN

With a wide range of OASE fountains to select from, it’s never been easier to add the final touches to a landscaping project. A large fountain will draw eyes from all around and with a number of OASE lighting options, the fountain can shine day or night.

Even if the project doesn‘t have a large body of water, OASE have a large range of pond-free solutions to discover. Select from our self-contained Copper Bowls, Waterfalls, Wall Spouts that all make use of underground or hidden reservoirs.

By introducing moving water to your next project not only will it entice and delight anyone that see it, but it can provide a relaxing environment to all those who encounter it. And remember, moving water with complementary lighting can add the final finishing touches to any project.

TREE RELOCATION:

PRESERVING NATURE’S BEAUTY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

Since 1963, Civic Trees have been at the forefront of tree relocation throughout the UK, from importing the very first Vermeer tree spade into Europe, to designing and constructing the Newman Frame which is now used worldwide.

Civic Trees are always looking to pioneer new techniques that aid the relocation of trees.

Tree relocation is a concept that involves uprooting trees from one location and transplanting them to another. With current events surrounding environmental issues, relocating trees is even more important now than ever before. By relocating trees instead of cutting them down, we can preserve nature’s beauty while also promoting sustainability.

We are proud of our reputation for efficient, cost effective and reliable tree relocation throughout the UK. You can be confident that through our exemplary commitment to staff

training and development, our work meets the highest technical and safety standards.

We believe that a tree is only as good as the way it is handled, planted and maintained. Ground preparation and aftercare are crucial to the successful establishment of the tree.

Before we start the tree move process we arrange a site visit with our client and assess the tree’s health, size, and root system. We also create a site specific risk assessment to ensure the whole operation is carried out safely.

Our team of experts use specialised equipment to excavate the tree with minimal damage to its root structure. The tree is then carefully transported to its new location,

where it is replanted and nurtured to ensure its successful adaptation.

Our experienced team will know and understand the benefits and methods of loading and unloading a tree using the correct lifting techniques in order not to stress the tree or root ball. This is imperative for the longevity of the tree’s life.

In conclusion, tree relocation is an environmentally friendly method that allows us to preserve nature’s beauty while supporting urban growth. By carefully uprooting and relocating trees, we can maintain the valuable benefits they provide to our communities.

Civic Trees prides itself in paying great attention to the health and well being of our clients most prized asset “THE TREE”. www.civictrees.co.uk

MARANO INTEGRATED: THE NEW MODULAR FENCING RANGE FROM F.H. BRUNDLE

Marano Integrated is the latest addition to F.H. Brundle’s stylish aluminium fencing range. This versatile system consists of boards, screens, posts, and inserts that can provide either total privacy or boards with 25mm gaps between them. Multiple spacers can also be used to create larger spaces between boards.

In common with the broader Marano range, Marano Integrated is long-lasting, requires extremely little maintenance, and is therefore highly cost-effective.

Simple to install, the product features a single universal post measuring 80 x 80mm, with a narrow 20.6mm slot on two sides, and an extra wide slot on the third side. The post can be used as an intermediate, corner, and end post by adding or removing extrusions.

The Marano Integrated infill range consists of four hollow sections – one 55mm section (Half Round system), a 50mm rectangular section (Parallel 50 system), a 100mm rectangular section (Parallel 100

system), and one that features a tongue and groove (Connect 150 system).

But perhaps the range’s most notable feature is its decorative screens, made of lasered aluminium sheeting.

These attractive additions can be incorporated in several ways. The full height 1825mm screens, measuring 300 or 1000mm wide, can be used in conjunction with the Half Round, Parallel 50, Parallel 100, and Connect 150 systems, and be installed either horizontally or vertically. Alternatively, you could build a fence using only the screens.

The versatility of the screens also allows them to be used alone as trellis or even wall art.

The boards are available in six colours - basalt grey, pebble grey, beige grey, black sand, oak wood effect, and grey wood effect. Mill finish is also available, allowing you to powder coat to any RAL colour.

Let there be light!

New to the range, and the perfect accessory to illuminate your outdoor space, our LED lights bring a touch of elegance to your fence. It can be incorporated into the fencing using the top and bottom channels, which simply run in between the posts and discretely hide the LED strips to create a unique lighting system.

Marano Integrated, the long-lasting, and easy to fit aluminium fencing range, offers total flexibility and endless design possibilities.

COLOURS INSPIRED

BY NATURE

Colour has a huge impact on how we feel, act and react. There are various psychological studies on how different colours evoke different moods, which can profoundly effect our happiness and productivity. Interestingly, the history of the first colour used in art, dates back to 75,000 years, when red, from ochre, was used for caveman drawings –using colours inspired by nature.

Nature provides us with everchanging beauty, the waves of the sea and the wilderness of roaring rivers, these are the elements that Osmo UK have drawn upon for inspiration. With innovative design, Osmo UK has created an new product with nature in mind. Explore the colours inspired by nature, from the ocean floor to your home.

New Country Shades

Country Shades is a stunning new

wood finish to join the Osmo UK exterior range, with 120 colours inspired by nature. Country Shades offers up to 26m² per litre with just one coat. The highperformance exterior wood finish doesn’t require sanding for future applications. A simple re-application is recommended when signs of wear become visible. Reduce your maintenance time and increase your wood’s longevity with osmo UK’s quality wood finishes.

HYDRANGEAS ARE COMING ON STRONG

Hydrangea are the plant of the summer however they also provide late autumn colour giving them multiple seasons of interest. With much innovation and imagination gone into breeding over the last few years, there are now an abundance of choices available in the trade.

There is a Hydrangea to fit the largest and smallest borders with a huge range of flower shapes, colour, heights, foliage and situations making them an ideal choice for a wide range of planting situations.

Hydrangea macrophylla Forever & Ever series basically does what it says on the tin. Flowers are produced continuously from spring through to autumn in a myriad of flower colours. This series of Hydrangeas flower on new and older wood resulting in an abundance of blooms on each stem. As the season progresses older blooms change with age giving a longer season of interest.

Hydrangea paniculata are renowned for their cone-shaped clusters of long-lasting flowers, flowering on new wood each year and not being

fussy on soil type to maintain flower colour. Unlike most Hydrangea paniculata types flower better given full sun to partial shade allowing the Hydrangea to be planted in a wider scope of areas than the old fashioned macrophylla types.

Hydrangea arborescens are well renowned for one of the most popular Hydrangeas on the market, Hydrangea arb. Annabelle. Other Annabelles are now also gaining in popularity due to breeding for certain characteristics; Strong Annabelle has strong branches capable of holding the large cream-white flower heads erect, Ruby Annabelle will sport redpink flowers on sturdy stems, Sweet Annabelle has bi-coloured raspberry and white flowers and Pink Annabelle has pink flowers that emerge from deep red buds. All arborescens types will reach around 1.5m in height.

If you like a bit of fancy foliage with your Hydrangea there are two excellent options to select from; aspera and quercifolia Hydrangea will fit the bill alongside exquisite flowers.

Hydrangea aspera Hot Chocolate will flower from May to October with dusty pink and blue flowers produced in succession prolonging the interest. The foliage is large, felty to the touch and a delicious dark chocolate brown in contrast. Again, Hydrangea aspera flower colour remains consistent no matter what the pH of the soil.

Hydrangea quercifolia have huge dramatic oak-leaf shaped foliage that turn scarlet red in the autumn and are often held on the plant persisting through winter. Conical flowers of cream, white or pink dependant on variety in late summer provide valuable colour to the back of a border. Quercifolia flower colour remains consistent no matter what the pH of the soil. Hydrangea remain one of the most popular plants and with options now maintaining flower colour irrespective of the soil pH, they are here to stay.

Check out our range of over 160 Hydrangea options on our website updated throughout the day.

TREES FOR BEES

From the first warm day in spring to the last sunny day in autumn, bees fly around looking for nectar and pollen to collect. As well as flowers on herbs and plants, blossoming trees play an important role in providing a food supply for bees.

In the search for food, willows are a favourite during the early spring and after this fruit trees. After the fruit trees have blossomed, there is not much more to be found until summer. In order to give the bees a helping hand you can plant trees that blossom and produce nectar or pollen at different times throughout the growing season.

Blossoming lime trees are perhaps the most valuable pollen plants for bees.

By planting a wide range of species, the blossoming period can be spread out from June to September. The large-leaved lime (Tilia platyphyllos) is one of the first limes to blossom in June. Followed by the common lime (Tilia xeuropaea). This species blossoms for longer than the others, around twenty days up to the end of June or beginning of July.

The next to blossom are the American linden (Tilia americana) and Henry’s lime (Tilia henryana), late in the summer – in July and August-September respectively.

Unusual trees for bees

The bee-bee tree (Tetradium daniellii) is a great example of an important food providing tree. The pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum) is another one. In the Ebben Nursery ‘Trees for Bees’ calendar, you can find more good pollen trees and shrubs, listed by blossoming month, as a guideline to create a planting plan for bees.

Growing the future

In order to respond to future needs we must adopt a more forward- thinking approach using smart green applications. As they have in Rotterdam where Ebben Nurseries has done its part towards the city’s green ambitions, placing seventy-five multi-stem birches on the roof of the spectacular Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen. At a height of nearly forty metres, the multi-stem Betula pubescens adorn the roof garden of the new museum art storage facility.

5 KEY CONSIDERATIONS FOR OUTDOOR UPGRADES

Outdoor areas play a major part in creating first impressions and can serve to either attract or detract from your property’s curb appeal. By adding a beautiful outdoor facility that you can enjoy right away, you not only improve its attractiveness and utility immediately, you also increase its resale value over time.

Here are five key considerations for outdoor upgrades to unlock your property’s potential:

LIFESTYLE/FUNCTIONALITY

This may seem obvious, but the kind of lifestyle you lead or wish to lead or the functionality you require should guide your decision on what outdoor upgrades you should consider. Are you an entertainer? Do you like to do outdoor yoga? Do you need a quiet space to read and relax or to send the kids to play safely

outside? Be it a patio or pergola, a pool-deck or a firepit, all of these questions should be answered before you decide what kind of outdoor upgrade will add value to your property.

Once those questions are answered, it’s very easy to extend your living space to create exactly what you need to meet your outdoor needs and expectations. Modern composite building materials such as Eva-Last’s decking, pergola beams and privacy screens are designed with these spaces in mind and you can find inspirational images and articles on www.eva-last.com. They offer quick and easy solutions to create beautiful outdoor spaces. Not only are you increasing the available area to live, work or play, you’re adding a beautiful aesthetic that enhances your property’s appeal.

WEATHER

Once you’ve decided what to build, it’s also important to consider the seasons and prevailing weather – you may need shelter from the wind, rain or snow, perhaps sun protection and shade is a bigger factor for your particular location. Whether it’s a patio that opens out from the lounge, or a split-level entertainment area for parties or pilates, be sure to select the most suitable products, designed to withstand the elements – you don’t want to spend your weekends fixing or maintaining your porch! Look for durable, weather-resistant options such as Eva-Last’s range of composite materials. Made from recycled plastic combined with flexible, fast-growing bamboo fibres, Eva-Last composite products, unlike wood, require very little maintenance. Plus, they’re backed by up to 30-year warranties and

54 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine DECKING

are designed to outlast even the toughest timbers.

SAFETY & SECURITY

Another seemingly obvious consideration, the safety and security of your property can enhance or detract from its perceived value. Are there any glaring gaps in your home’s safety measures such as rickety rails, uneven steps or a rotten deck or substructure? What about the structure and securing of your pergola’s overhead beams? When you consider upgrading these types of areas, it’s not just about choosing products with the right aesthetic. It’s about ensuring the products have a reputation of reliability, testing and compliance which meets required building codes and warranties that give you peace-ofmind that this is an investment into your property.

FASHIONABLE FINISHES AND COLOURS

Cover up imperfections and add that WOW factor to your property’s façade or exterior walls with convenient, durable and beautiful VistaClad cladding from Eva-Last.

You’ll instantly update the face of the building, and it won’t scratch, fade or chip and peel like your usual annual paint job! How about an attractive soffit to cover up an ugly ceiling? VistaClad’s interlocking cladding boards simply fasten onto a hidden clip strip for a seamless, secure skin suitable for any wall or ceiling, even curved ones.

In addition to the desired aesthetic appeal, the orientation or aspect of your property also influences your choice of colour – is it facing the sun or do you need to maximise light and spaciousness? Do you need to consider heat underfoot or temperature control? Lighter shades are better suited to hotter climates and darker shades tend to absorb more heat. Enjoy the good looks of wood in places you never thought possible without the worries of rotting in the rain, or fading in the sun. Eva-Last’s advanced composite technologies guarantee a colourfast product that ensures your surface will stay the shade you selected for many years to come.

MAINTENANCE

Once you’ve done your installation, it’s important to keep the area clean and tidy with minimal fuss and expense. This is where the quality of your product will be most evident – cutting costs at the outset may be costly in the long run with expensive maintenance and upkeep requirements, or even worse replacement. To protect the intrinsic value of your investment, consider the ongoing maintenance requirements of your proposed deck, walkway, pergola or cladding. This is where engineered composite materials like Eva-Last outperform their natural counterparts, needing only a simple wipe or wash to remove any excess dirt or debris, and their very structure resists degradation or infestation by insects.

As a leading supplier of bamboo composite building materials to countries around the world, EvaLast offer the latest in material technology and product excellence for the built environment.

“Our experience has been our guide over the years, and we pride ourselves on always having our finger on the pulse of things,” says CEO and co-founder, Marc Minne.

“We work hard to develop products and improvements that not only beautify the built environment and outdoor areas, but also add convenience and simplicity in the process,” concludes Minne.

THE EASIEST WAYS TO MAKE PRESERVATIVE TREATED TIMBER LAST LONGER

Preservative treated timber components have been through a factory-controlled process. This results in an effective barrier of protection against decay and insect attack – providing added durability and extending its service life.

Treated products are designed to be installed without modification – if possible. When they are cross cut to size you are likely exposing an untreated core, breaking the ‘envelope’ of preservative protection. By giving each cut end, two liberal coats of a suitable end-grain wood preservative or protector, you can maintain the integrity of the treatment. This also applies to areas which are bored, drilled or notched. Your timber supplier should be able to recommend a suitable product.

Post installation

Preservative penetration achieved by brush application is less than that achieved by the industrial treatment process. So even if an end-grain product has been applied to a cross-cut end of a treated post, this end must NEVER be embedded in the ground. Instead put the un-cut end in the ground.

A cross-cut preservative treated post showing extent of formulation penetration.

Mechanical incising is a method used to help achieve desired preservative penetration levels. Some fence posts only have incising along part of their length and, in such circumstances, the un-cut, incised end of the post must be placed in the ground.

If a post does needs shortening, cut the top (at an angle to shed water) and apply two coats of brush-on treatment. Fit the cut top with a post cap to reduce water penetration.

If you need to source a cut-end product, please get in touch with the Wood Protection Association (WPA). Visit our website for more information on wood protection technologies: www.thewpa.org.uk

DISPELLING COMMON DECKING AND CLADDING MISCONCEPTIONS

As a technical advisory service, the TDCA receives enquiries daily. But too often we get asked the same questions that are fundamental to both timber decking and cladding. We’re working hard to address them and provide resolution to common misconceptions by providing free resources on our website as well as on-hand guidance.

As well as our popular Timber Decking and Cladding Handbooks, the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section of our website has a host of solutions to common issues and if you can’t find the answers there then you can get in touch. Whenever we receive and deal with a new enquiry, if the subject is not already covered on our site, we create a new FAQ.

If you’re after a particular fixing, coating or timber component look no further than our Supplier database of DeckMark and CladMark approved products and suppliers. Similarly, we have a growing number of approved installers too.

In addition to our bespoke sourcing service, we offer inspection and expert witness services if things have gone wrong with your decking or cladding project.

The Timber Decking and Cladding Association is a not-for-profit company and the money generated from membership fees and inspection services goes towards its work to raise awareness of fit-for-purpose materials and installation good practice.

Trees are an important part of our natural life support system; they have a vital role to play in the sustainability of our towns and cities and we need to take better care of them, both now and in the future, yet we see them starved of natural food and water and damaged at their roots by earthworks, particularly in developed areas of towns and car parks.

As a result of the built environment soil compaction can inhibit or prevent natural root growth. STEP INTO PERFECTION:

AQUACUT’S UNPARALLELED PROCESS FOR CRAFTING EXTRAORDINARY STEPS

Welcome to the world of Aquacut, where artistry meets precision, and innovation reigns supreme. As a leading manufacturer of steps for retail, commercial and domestic properties, we take pride in creating thousands of bespoke steps every year. Our commitment to excellence drives us to deliver the highest quality products that meet the unique demands of our esteemed clientele. Let’s take a fascinating journey through our step-by-step process, where every detail matters.

Precise Templating

At Aqucut, we embrace the challenge of fabricating intricate step designs, including the enigmatic spiral staircases. Our secret weapon? High-end computerised laser templating systems, accurate to the millimetre. From the first moment of templating, we ensure that every curve, angle and dimension is flawlessly plotted, setting the stage for a perfect masterpiece.

Cutting-edge CNC Technology

Waterjet cutting is at the heart of what we do here at Aquacut. The state-of-the-art CNC-systems harness water and abrasive to cut through any material, such as porcelain, with pin-point precision and no breakage. Our waterjet cutting machines are technological

marvels that produce stunningly accurate continuous cuts ensuring a consistent finish is presented throughout all our steps and risers.

Profiling and Polishing

The beauty and safety of a project go hand in hand at Aquacut. With our expert profiling machinery, our artisans can create edge profiles to the needs of the client. Our most popular profile finish is the bullnose, where we gently round the edges of each step, enhancing the aesthetics of the tile whilst eliminating sharp edges. Not only does this remove the dangers of the step, but it also adds a new sleek aesthetic finish to the design.

Mitring and Bonding

Every step and riser at Aquacut undergoes an artful mitring process, meticulously crafted to ensure a flawless union. With expert bonding using special colour-matched resin and adhesives, we forge an unbreakable connection between the porcelain, resulting in a staircase that stands the test of time.

Reduced Slip Features

Reduced slip features play a paramount role in the creation of our steps and risers at Aquacut. Due to our high-end machinery and skilled artisans, we offer a wide

range of reduced slip features to our clients, ensuring the safety and beauty of the project are equally as important.

To safeguard against slips or falls, we offer anti-slip solutions that bring peace of mind to high-traffic areas. We offer a wide range of anti-slip features, such as etched grooves, metal bar inserts, tactile studs, resin and more. Not only do our anti-slip features allow for step treads to be safer, but they also assist those with impaired vision, allowing for easier navigation with each step.

At Aquacut, our process is more than just manufacturing; it’s a work of passion and dedication. Whether you’re seeking steps for a retail environment that demands aesthetic appeal, a commercial space that demands durability, or a domestic setting that demands comfort, Aquacut is your answer.

So, step into perfection with Aquacut, where every detail matters. Choose Aquacut, where innovation meets artistry, and elevate your world, one step at a time. www.aquacut.co.uk

This recent installation, a testament to precision craftsmanship, showcases the seamless fusion of aesthetics and functionality.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, our ResinBound surfaces transform spaces into works of art. Not only are our permeable surfaces aesthetically pleasing, but they are also SuDS compliant. SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) compliance refers to adhering to regulations that promote eco-friendly management of surface water runoff. It involves designing surfaces and drainage systems that mimic natural processes, reducing flood risks and pollution by allowing water to infiltrate, be stored, or evaporate, aiding in sustainable urban development.

ENHANCING OUTDOOR SPACES WITH SURESET

The University of Bath, a prominent UK institution known for its teaching and research excellence, responded to the rising demand for quality student accommodation by constructing Brendon Court, a new student housing complex on campus. Comprising 113 flats, Brendon Court accommodates 126 first-year undergraduate students. The heart of the complex features a communal area serving as both an access pathway and a comfortable outdoor seating space.

Main Contractor K P Wilton & Son Ltd engaged SureSet, a seasoned expert in resin bound paving installation, for the project. Resin bound paving was chosen due to its remarkable attributes, including durability, permeability, aesthetics, low maintenance, versatility, and eco-friendliness.

The process involved preparing a permeable asphalt base for effective drainage, followed by the installation of the resin bound paving, professional executed by Subcontractor and Approved Installer of SureSet, Bruce Lovelock. The chosen aggregate, 6mm Barley Butter, was meticulously mixed with ProResin and catalyst. This mixture was then evenly spread onto the base, compacted, and smoothed to create a firm, attractive surface.

The outcomes were impressive. The resin bound paving not only elevated the complex’s visual appeal but also delivered a robust, easily maintained, and safe surface. The success of this implementation showcases how this innovative paving solution can fulfil multifaceted requirements while enhancing the overall quality of university communal area.

Overall, resin bound paving offers landscape and urban designers a versatile, sustainable, and visually appealing solution that can enhance the functionality and aesthetics of outdoor spaces while also addressing important environmental and safety considerations

or gate entrances ensures a seamless integration. Custom profiles can be crafted for architectural congruity.

Selecting suitable stone type, colour, size and edge profile is crucial. Stoneworld offer high-quality coping stones tailored to your project. Whether for contemporary or classic aesthetics, coping stones are a valuable addition to landscaping or interior design, enhancing both form and function.

Coping stones can elevate both aesthetics and function in your home and garden. These versatile stones have many diverse applications adding both form and function to a project.

1. Pool Surrounds: Coping stones are ideal for pool edges, offering a comfortable grip and a sleek appearance. Copings can be laid to allow water to fall away or into a pool, preventing marks and stains. Different edge profiles can be customized to match the pool’s design.

2. Wall Protection: Placing coping stones atop walls safeguards against rainwater damage, stains, and structural decay. The stones’ overhang directs water away

from the wall’s surface, preserving its appearance. Drip grooves aid water runoff, while matching coping to various materials enhances the wall’s appeal.

3. Step Treads: Coping stones double as step treads, ensuring secure steps in gardens or indoors. Whether in gardens or indoor staircases, coping stones can have edge profiles matching the overall design. Slip-resistant finishes and features like grip strips or lighting enhance safety and aesthetics.

4. Feature Coordination: Coping stones can unify architectural features across your property, creating a harmonious design. Matching coping for walls, pillars,

LANDSCAPE SURFACE CARE COVERED WITH ECOPROTEC®

Developed for the landscape and contract sectors, the ECOPROTEC® range includes sustainable surface care products for all types of natural and engineered stone, from limestone to external porcelain. All treatments are made in the UK and the sealing products benefit from the most advanced research in waterbased technology - combining high performance with low odour and low VOC formulations.

The latest innovations

New treatments include

ECOPROTEC® Black Spot & Algae

Remover and Iron Stain Away. Black Spot & Algae Remover targets organic residues, including black spot, lichen, moss and algae, restoring natural stone, concrete, brick and porcelain in as little as two hours. The second product, Iron Stain Away, is a professional treatment that safely removes rust outbreaks from ferrous hard stones, including sandstone, slate and granite, as well as cement and mortar stains.

Protecting external stone & paving

To protect tiles and stone laid outside, the range includes three sealers, a pre-grout protector for matt porcelain and a restoration treatment for faded dark pavers.

The three ECOPROTEC® external sealers include Ultimate Sealer, Patio Sealer and Colour Enhancing

Sealer. All three are designed to protect all types of natural and engineered stone in outdoor settings, including smooth, honed, rough cut and polished surfaces. They each have a water-based impregnating formulation that strongly repels water, oil, dirt and grease, helps reduce efflorescence and allows the surface to breathe. The difference is in the finish; Ultimate Sealer leaves the surface virtually unchanged in appearance; Patio Sealer provides a delicately enhanced natural finish and Colour Enhancing Sealer creates a more pronounced enhancement, bringing out the natural warmth, tone and colour pigment of the stone.

Unlike film-forming or topical sealers which sit on the tile surface, impregnating sealers penetrate, react and line the open pores. They create a hydrophobic and oleophobic barrier that helps to prevent deep staining and facilitates future cleaning and aftercare. Once cured, water vapour permeability remains, allowing transition of microscopic droplets of moisture. This helps to keep any rising salts down and allows any residual moisture to escape.

Protecting textured matt porcelain

Developed for use externally and internally, ECOPROTEC® Pre-Grout Protection is a water-based ‘preand-post-grout’ treatment designed for unpolished, textured porcelain. This solution is specifically designed to protect tiles from staining and it allows easy removal of residues of cement-based grouts and two-part resin based jointing compounds, as well as stubborn organic matter. Creating a barrier, without forming a film or altering appearance, it helps to improve and increase the working time of grouts and jointing compounds - and greatly reduces the

risk of cement and resin staining. It also helps assist with future cleaning and aftercare.

Restoring colour to faded pavers

Outdoor sealer and restorer, ECOPROTEC® Black Stone

Colour Restorer is a water-based impregnator designed for dark natural stone and artificial stone surfaces. Fast and safe to use, it is formulated to restore the appearance of faded limestone, marble, slate and concrete and to provide protection against the elements and staining. During application, the treatment is applied in multiple coats until the desired colour effect is achieved –from grey to ebony. Once dried the sealer is then ‘cut back’ to remove excess, ensuring the surface is safe to walk on.

Advice on-the-go

In addition to support provided by LTP’s in-house technical team, the ECOPROTEC® Product Selector offers instant advice on surface care and treatment, for all types of tile and stone. The free online resource –accessed at ecoproductselector.com - identifies the correct treatment according to surface type and symptom, with continuous updates to include the latest tile finishes and related issues. As well as providing support for contractors, installers and end users, Product Selector is also a valuable retail sales aid and training tool.

MAPEI ULTRACARE -

A COMPLETE PROTECTION & MAINTENANCE SOLUTION FOR HARD LANDSCAPING

enhancing and providing water and oil-repellent protection, to protection prior to grouting. All treatments are supplied ready to use and the waterbased treatments can be applied directly onto dry/ slightly damp, clean materials.

In all environments, a good protection and maintenance regime is essential, in order to retain a tile’s aesthetic and performance. In outdoor settings, this can be a particular challenge, especially with increasingly severe weather, greater footfall and the advent of heavily textured engineered tiles. In response, Mapei has developed the UltraCare range of cleaners and protectors. Formulated in the Mapei Research Laboratories, and designed for professional and end-user application, Mapei UltraCare provides a solution from installation right up to the protection and maintenance of surfaces in private and commercial settings. Treatments are formulated for all types of natural and engineered stone and tile finishes, from sandstone to external grade porcelain.

Cleaning external paving

Mapei’s UltraCare cleaners are tailored to a tile’s finish and individual characteristics. Each formulation provides a safe and easy-to-use solution for the most diverse sites, from new installations, to the renovation of existing paths, patios, parking areas and outdoor swimming pools.

For acid-resistant natural stone and tiles, like sandstone and porcelain, Mapei UltraCare Acid Cleaner and Mapei UltraCare Keranet are ideal choices for a landscapers clean and stain removal. Both safely remove fixing residue - including cementitious grout, organic dirt, salt, limescale and efflorescence. The ‘buffered’ formulations do not emit fumes, so they are safe for the applicator and for the environment.

To deep clean unpolished natural stone and textured porcelain pavers, the range includes an alkaline solution - Mapei UltraCare HD Cleaner. Ideal for renovating hard landscaping, the cleaner removes residue and organic dirt, moss and algae, restoring a tile’s slip rating as well as its aesthetic. For ongoing maintenance of all types of stone and tile, the range also includes Mapei UltraCare Multicleaner. A concentrated pH-neutral cleaner, Mapei UltraCare Multicleaner gives a thorough clean without rinsing. To deep clean and remove dirt and grout, a lower dilution can be used and the surface is rinsed after application.

Protecting outdoor surfaces

Mapei’s range of UltraCare protectors meet specific requirements - from colour

For paths, patios and other areas of paving, the range includes a number of water-based products: Mapei UltraCare Stain Protector W and Stain Protector W Plus both provide protection from water, oil and grease, with a natural effect; the added product feature of Stain Protector W Plus is that it can also be applied onto polished natural stone and polished porcelain. The treatments can be used on all types of natural, unpolished stone driveways and brickwork.

Mapei UltraCare Intensifier W protects and enhances mediumhigh porosity natural stone in a single product application. Mapei UltraCare Grout Release protects porous natural stone from grout ingress and staining and, on textured porcelain, it acts as a sacrificial surface protector that promotes quick and easy removal of grout and installation residues.

If installing external porcelain and grouting with a cementitious grout, then Mapei UltraCare Grout Protector can be applied to protect joints from staining.

BOUGHTON TAKES LONDON

THE NATURAL GROWING MEDIA EXPERTS ENJOY GROWTH WITHIN THE CAPITAL

North, east and west, some of London’s most iconic residential and commercial developments have benefited from using a combination of green roof substrates and natural, as-dug soils from one of the UK’s leading growing media suppliers, Boughton. Here we learn more about the latest project at Canary Wharf and look back at some of previous London highlights that have helped to put Boughton well and truly on the map.

The Pavilion at Landmark Pinnacle, Canary Wharf

Part of a much larger scale project which includes the UK’s highest tropical garden, the Pavilion at Landmark Pinnacle is the work

of Gillespies, Valley Provincial and Farrer Huxley. The green roof which swoops over the ground level commercial space at the foot of the 75-storey skyscraper, will provide much needed green space for those that live and work in the locality. Whilst residents of Landmarks Pinnacle will have access to two sky gardens, this pavilion has been created for the wider community as a place to promote healthy, active and social living. Sloped to the ground level the space is accessible to all.

Zoned planting, which creates zigzagged walkways to a raised theatre-style seating arrangement at its highest point, has been supported

by Boughton lightweight green roof substrates, Intensive IN 1 and the lightweight subsoil.

Boughton’s Intensive IN 1 was selected for its greater organic content and its ability to support larger plants and deeper planting depths. Not only this but IN 1 is perfect for schemes that optimise a more detailed and formalised planting scheme as that seen at the Pavilion, which allows for year-round colour and texture, an approach that has become Gillespies trademark at this project and has since gained them finalist status at the 2022 Landscape Institute Awards: Excellence in Horticulture and Planting Design category.

82 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

Joining the line-up was Boughton’s lightweight subsoil which created the perfect footprint for the application of Intensive IN 1.

Sheldon Square, Paddington

The Landmark Pinnacle project follows hot on the heels of the Sheldon Square project that also saw Boughton and Gillespies work together.

Located at the heart of Paddington Central, Sheldon Square is best known for its amphitheatre, where a range of activities take place every day. From lunch with colleagues and friends to a special location for live music and culture, Sheldon Square and its amphitheatre are much loved by those that live and work there.

In 2022 the area benefited from a makeover which saw improved facilities, better accessibility, a more dynamic performance space and a greener space added. New trees, sunloving plants and over 40 colourful perennials were added to not only create a vibrant display but were chosen for their ability to reduce pollution, improve air quality and to increase biodiversity and climate change resilience.

Working with Gillespies, alongside main contractors, 8Build, and soft landscape contractor, Kingston Landscape Group, Boughton supplied over 80m3 of its everpopular BLS 2 topsoil to site in bulk

bags. Single-sourced, ‘as dug’ natural and screened, Boughton’s BLS 2 topsoil was specified for this project by Gillespies.

Battersea Power Station

Whilst not Boughton’s first largescale project, Battersea Power Station certainly remains its most iconic.

Situated on a 39-acre site, the Grade II* listed former Power Station was subject to an incredible £9billion redevelopment project – one of the biggest schemes of this type anywhere in Europe.

It was within the scheme’s ‘Garden of Elements’ project that saw Boughton step-up, providing its green roof substrates to support the planting within this series of three garden spaces.

Positioned between the four chimneys that have become synonymous with the Battersea development, sits the ‘Garden of Elements’, which was designed by Andy Sturgeon and brought to life by six-times BALI Grand awardwinners, Willerby Landscapes. Each garden is inspired by fire, water or air, harking back to the Power Station’s previous life. It is within these gardens, including the notable main podium garden ‘Boiler House Square’ that saw Boughton’s IN1 Intensive and Lightweight Green Roof Substrates, and Rootzone come into their own.

These garden spaces, full of cloudlike planting schemes are set within raised beds and tall grasses with vegetation designed to offer year-round interest with a mix of evergreens, Mediterranean and more exotic species. Boughton’s IN1 substrate was selected to support this scheme thanks to its ability to support larger plants and to be installed at depths from 100 – 500cm, thanks to its sandy texture. Additionally, Boughton’s IN1 substrate offers significant moisture retention qualities, making it the perfect choice when so many plants are vying for attention within this three-hectare site. IN1 from Boughton continues to meet and exceed all G.R.O guidelines.

Elsewhere Boughton’s Lightweight Substrate was used to provide growing media where weight loading for the green roof needed to be lighter than traditional green roof schemes. Finally, Rootzone completed the offering. Supplied as a ready-mixed solution, Rootzone provided better planting conditions throughout the scheme.

Product was supplied in both bulk bags and 25L bags, meaning the Boughton team had to go above and beyond to tackle the logistical challenges that delivering to a central location presented.

Talking during the construction of the horticulturally rich roof garden, Willerby Landscapes said: “Boughton were a pleasure to work with, being able to safely deliver the material to site despite the many logistical challenges that this prestigious, central London project posed. They supplied us with top quality substrates specifically approved by Tim O’Hare, as well as a service that’s hard to beat”.

SECURING 300 PALMS AT PALM JAMEIRAH

For more than 20 years, Platipus Anchors has played a pivotal role in introducing urban greening to the continuously expanding metropolis of Dubai. This sprawling city, nestled in a geographically challenging environment, has enthusiastically embraced the notion of tree and palm anchoring as a solution to infuse greenery into its urban fabric. This innovative approach not only involves securely planting huge specimens but also rapidly transforms spaces into inviting retreats, alleviating the stress often experienced by the city’s vital tourist population. Furthermore, it significantly contributes to cooling the local environment in the face of Dubai’s blistering heat.

A prime example of this approach is West Beach at Palm Jumeirah, a popular tourist hub adorned with luxury hotels and fine dining establishments. The area’s exposure to relentless sunlight prompted the strategic decision to introduce a multitude of palms, capitalising on their natural benefits.

Platipus took on the task of providing underground tree anchoring for over 300 palms lining the main boulevard. Standing at an impressive 7 metres upon planting, the Platipus RF2PDMAN System with Plati-Mat was the chosen solution. Thanks to its patented D-MAN cells, it offers exceptional performance while remaining remarkably lightweight for easy transportation and installation.

Given the altered landscape to accommodate the boulevard development, planting depth was limited. The Platipus D-MAN System provided a seamless solution, requiring only 30 centimetres of loosely compacted soil between the D-MAN cell and base of the palm rootball.

Additionally, to address the variable quality of some palm rootballs, the ingenious Plati-Mat came into play. These protective mats increased the contact surface area on top of the rootball, effectively distributing the load generated from the D-MAN cells and preventing potential damage.

palms is striking, a testament to the benefits of merging nature with the harshest of urban environments. Exploring West Beach at Palm Jumeirah becomes even more impressive when you appreciate these swaying giants are secured underground by Platipus’ innovative tree anchoring system.

SKATEPARK ŘEPORYJE

Skatepark Řeporyje is a multifunctional leisure activity park, that is connecting movement and art in public space.

The impulse for the proposal of the leisure activity park in Řeporyje came straight from the residents of the city district and their need for a multifunctional sports and leisure activity area. Our goal was to create a safe and attractive public space, that will bring variability of use for various ages and social groups.

The design contains a skatepark, parkour, pump track, picnic tables

with grill, as well as a wooden stage for events and outdoor cinema. All merged into one space. Important parts of the proposal are statues from the most famous Czech sculptors – Čestmir Suška and Lukáš Rais. Sculptures are in direct dialogue with the composition and elements of the sports facility, which creates an unexpected connection between movement and art. The project is also featuring new public lighting, a ping pong table, a charging point, and a water fountain, which should be included in a place like this. The project also includes public toilets and snack-bar as separate design objects.

The main paved surface is made of smoothened concrete for an unobstructed ride. A part of the concrete surface is pigmented with earth tones, that correspond to the sculptures and help the proposal to blend with its surroundings. The diagonal pedestrian path is made of concrete tiles to provide better orientation within the space. Edges of the obstacles and pipe elements are made of painted steel, as well as the structure of the wooden podiums. Areas that are dedicated to relaxing are defined by yellow decomposed granite, which builds up the natural character of the proposal and helps reduce the

overheating of the area. Rainwater is absorbed on the site via the underground drainage system.

Demolition of the fence will open the whole area for the support of social safety and inclusion of the different social layers and various sports activities. Public lights in the area keep the obstacles visible throughout the day, therefore allowing the use of the skatepark until late at night. The diagonal path across the area creates a direct connection between the art centre BUBEC and the town centre. The whole area is well interconnected with the paths and pavements nearby. Steps for seating in the sloped landscape are providing great views of the whole area and the beautiful valley in the background.

Brownfield in Prague Řeporyje has turned into a new leisure activity park that links sport and culture. Due to its position, adjacent to the existing art centre BUBEC, the park has the ambition to become a new cultural centre for its Prague district.

GREEN-TECH GOES TO MARKET… BISHOP AUCKLAND’S RESIGRILLE TREE PITS REVISITED

The ResiGrilles can be supplied with the Resibond already in place, or it can be mixed on site, whichever the contractors preference. Resibond can also be used freeform without the grille tray, simply set within kerbstones or paving. The aggregate is available in a choice of five standard colours, and being porous, allows the transmission of both air and water into the tree pits.

Green-tech involvement:

Background:

The market town of Bishop Auckland was once one of the jewels in County Durham’s crown. A thriving centre for manufacturing and engineering, and an ideal hub for South Durham, featuring the majestic castle, home over the years to the Bishops of Durham.

Over the past 10-15 years a great deal of funding and planning has been put in place to bring Bishop Auckland back to its former glory and position it as a destination for both business and tourism.

As part of Phase 2 of the Renaissance works, funded by Durham County Council’s Capital Programme and Urban & Rural Renaissance Initiative, the Market Place underwent a comprehensive update. Additional full-sized parking bays and taxi rank, improved pedestrian access, and an overall increase in amenity space in front of the Town Hall for civic and community activities was added, as well as the bustling weekly Food Producers and Crafters Market, held on the last Thursday of the month.

As the UK’s largest supplier of landscape products, Green-tech works closely with many of the District Councils throughout the UK. Over 30 trees were planted around the Market Place, and due to a combination of pedestrian and vehicular over-run, geo-cellular units were used to protect the soil in the tree pits from compaction. This enabled the use of a good quality, organic topsoil to be used, as opposed to a structural tree sand, and Green-tech supplied over 300 tonnes of their manufactured British Standard topsoil for the tree pits, along with tree anchors, Mona irrigation with cast aluminium inlets, and root barrier where required.

To fit subtly in with the York stone paving slabs, Durham City Council opted for Green-tech’s GT Resi-Grilles. A mix of resin bound aggregate set within a custom-made, recessed tree grille, that supports the trafficking load and protects the rootball. Green-tech’s Resibond is an easy to install, porous, resinbound surface layer. It is ideal for tree surroundings in hard landscaping areas as it reduces the build-up of litter and negates trip hazards. Classed as a “hard surface”, once installed, it is durable, able to withstand pedestrian footfall, wheelchairs and prams, and is practically maintenance-free.

Alasdair Innes, Specification Advisor at Green-tech concludes, “This job was completed over ten years ago now, so it was high time we took a trip up to Bishop Auckland to see how they were standing up to the rigours of a bustling market town. The trees are looking in fine health, and it is good to see our Gt ResiGrilles weathered in nicely and standing the test of time.”

CASE STUDY: USING ATTRAXOR FOR CONSISTENCY AND EASE OF MAINTENANCE

A Golf Course Manager from a deluxe golf and spa resort nestled in the scenic Cheshire countryside explains why they use Attraxor to keep their turf green, clear of Poa annua, and easily maintainable.

Golf course manager John Quinn, based at The Mere Golf Resort and Spa near Knutsford, has been using Attraxor for three seasons and has shared the benefits he’s seen on the golf course.

The Mere offers a deluxe fourstar hotel experience with a spa and a scenic 18-hole lakeside Championship Golf Course,

encompassed by mature trees and extensive vegetation. The 81room hotel is a popular retreat for avid golfers, with many posting their experience on Trip Advisor complimenting the greens as being “smooth, fabulous, and well kept.”

John discussed the reasons he began to use Attraxor at The Mere: “After hearing lots of good stories about Attraxor, I decided to try it with the hope it would make the greens growth consistent and reduce clippings. We also wanted to suppress the growth of Poa annua seedheads to keep the greens smooth.”

Attraxor has been proven to regulate growth effectively as part of a well-managed turf strategy, meaning the hard work put into the upkeep of the grounds lasts longer. The active product within Attraxor is Prohexadione-calcium, which inhibits the gibberellic acid pathway, resulting in reduction of turf height and biomass. Root growth is promoted through Attraxor to aid strength, whilst turf colour and quality are maintained.

John said: “I use Attraxor every 21 days on our greens and it has lowered the mowing maintenance of the greens and complemented our

96 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine LANDSCAPING SERVICES

existing efforts of greens upkeep. During periods of high growth, we alternate days mowing and rolling to reduce plant stress. Attraxor gives me better control of growth rates. Throughout the 21-day period, a more uniform sward is possible each week. I’ve found that the Poa annua

seedhead suppression qualities are superior to Trinexapac-ethyl products. If any seedheads do pop up, they are remarkably smaller and leave a much finer putting surface.”

John also discussed the improvement of quality he is seeing

within the grass, saying: “We have been overseeding with creeping bentgrass for three years now, and in conjunction with our use of Attraxor, we have seen a much better uptake from our overseeding work!

“Introducing Attraxor to our maintenance regime has meant we spend less time mowing the greens. Having such good control over the growth rates means the option is always there to give the greens a break for a day without any mechanical input if we feel it would benefit. Attraxor has given me so much control over the golf course, it has allowed for consistent and quality greens coverage with minimal growth which is smooth and develops at the same pace as all the other greens.”

DESIGNING WITH PERENNIAL MEADOW FLOWERS: TIPS

FOR STUNNING

LANDSCAPES

Meadows have emerged as a celebrated feature in the tapestry of modern landscapes, capturing the hearts of landscape architects, urban designers, and architects alike. Crafting an enduring meadow community demands finesse, but with the right groundwork and adept management, the result is an enchanting display of blossoms that transcends time. Here’s a comprehensive guide to seamlessly incorporate perennial meadows into your projects.

The Heart of Growth: The Right Growing Medium

The bedrock of a thriving meadow lies in its growing medium. Striking a balance between drainage and fertility is pivotal. A drier, nutrientpoor medium nurtures a diverse range of flowering species that flourish under stress. A successful meadow requires a growing medium with a pH of 6-7, low phosphorous content, modest potassium levels, and a nitrogen index below 1%. Innovatively, crushed demolition waste, sand, and quarry chippings embody a sustainable solution, recycling waste materials while fostering the exact low-nutrient conditions needed.

Drainage: The Path To Diversity

Effective drainage is a master key in shaping meadows. Unless you’re cultivating a wet grassland, avoiding prolonged water saturation is paramount. Excess water invites competitive riparian species, curbing diversity. Moreover, waterlogged soil robs plants of essential oxygen, stifling root respiration and nutrient uptake. Masterful drainage involves crafting the landscape –slopes and undulations are like a canvas, rendering the meadow’s performance magnificent.

The Symphony of Species: Selection and Composition

Species selection is an art. Aim for an 85-15 split between shorter ground cover and taller emergent species. The secret lies in pairing contrasting colours, shapes, and textures to weave focal points into the meadow’s fabric. Grouping similar species emulates the wild, radiating authenticity. A prolonged flowering season sustains pollinators and visual splendour. Native species, supplemented by near natives, ensure this continuity. A rich mix, encompassing 20 to 40 species, fosters biodiversity.

Context: Where Nature Meets Design Selecting the perfect meadow location is a symphony of factors. Sunlight, next to growing medium and drainage, takes centre stage. Intimate meadows can curtail maintenance while bridging the gap between manicured grass and dense vegetation. Slopes present a captivating opportunity, enabling fewer cuts than traditional lawns. Rocky outcrops and subsoil can birth naturalistic wonders. Dismissing topsoil, meadows defy expectations.

A Grand Finale: Unveil Plans For a Perennial Meadow Meadows foster landscapes that enrapture our senses, extend a haven to countless creatures, bolster our ecosystems, and beckon us to reconnect with nature. With each meadow, a story unfolds – a story of resilience, beauty, and harmony. It’s time to embrace meadows, and to embrace them right.

As you embark on this journey, consider the perennial seeds Pictorial Meadows™ offers. Our collection embodies the wisdom distilled from years of expertise. Let’s champion the resurgence of meadows, sowing the seeds of change and reaping the rewards of a world reborn in nature’s grandeur.

RESCAYPE A PRODUCT FOR PRECISION LANDSCAPING AN EVOLUTION IN LA-PAM SOIL CONDITIONERS

consumer product “ Soilwater Improver”, which has pure gypsum added to increase ease of application.

Soil erosion and land flood damage costs around £2.2 billion in England and Wales annually. There is a critical need to address the cause and growing effects of soil erosion and the related pollution of nutrient/ nitrates, which cost the public more than £200m every year.

A new micronised water retention product that can significantly improve soil works in landscape projects by cutting the amount of nutrients and irrigation needed.

SoilWater Ltd has built on an Innovate UK grant and 75 years of past global efforts to introduce a cost-efficient and sustainable solution to boost soil productivity and resilience, effective for both open and intra-urban landscapes.

Christian Murray, founder, and CEO of SoilWater Ltd., states: “Our quality

and small size of material allows us to offer the world’s only instantly soluble soil amendment/conditioner, technically called a flocculant.” Rescaype® Product is used in such small amounts, just 1 g/m2 of it assures the soil will remain virtually free of any residues, unlike many other soil conditioners. Keeping gardens and plants in the best shape possible while reducing any run-off to local surface water, preventing future groundwater pollution.

“We offer both a pro user raw product and a specially mixed

Today la-PAM is commonly used in wastewater treatment. Rescaype’s breakthrough in particle liberation drives down the size of the existing large crystals of laPAM from 4000 microns to just 50 microns. This multiplies the impact through reaching a much greater distribution area as well as instant soil reactions once the product is activated with water.

Biodegradable, a World Health Organisation and EU-certificated food grade product, Rescaype can retain up to 400 times its weight in water and most importantly then release it to the plant roots through increasing cation exchange capacity of the soil. It reduces soil compaction through its structured aeration actions of swelling and shrinking.

“Bringing increased socio-economic sustainability benefits to home and professional garden-scapes, our aim is to reduce the number of resources currently used to secure soils and increase plant growth, allowing more carbon storage and creating the “Precision Landscaping” pathway for operators and the public.”

PINEWOOD SCOUT CENTRE LAKE REOPENED THANKS TO OTTERBINE

The best way to prevent algal blooms is to increase oxygen levels in the water, and Otterbine has the highest Oxygen Transfer Rates on the market – a key factor in Jim’s choice.

“When I took the site on last year, I had no background in lake management, so it’s been a great learning experience. Sometimes you’re presented with a problem and you have to find the best solution. Reesink has been fantastic. Any technical advice or any questions that I had on parts or suitability, they were just a phone call away.”

Otterbine’s Air Flo 3 underwater ‘bubbler’ diffused aeration system is the safe solution for Pinewood Scout Centre in Croydon, bringing its lake back to life and reopening it for water sports after a period of closure due to poor water quality.

When Jim Clements, site manager and scout leader, took on Pinewood Scout Centre last year he made it his mission to reform the site’s grounds, and fixing the lake that hosts the centre’s watersport activities was the first step. With the water quality of the lake being key to keeping the scouts safe, the Otterbine Air Flo 3 aerator was the ideal choice to get the lake back into action.

When it came time to find an aeration solution, Jim was after two key things: a system that is safe and can access the bottom of the lake to increase circulation and oxygenation. Otterbine ticked both boxes.

Otterbine’s Air Flo 3 is an underwater ‘bubbler’ diffused

aeration system that is designed to aerate and circulate the water without disturbing its natural surroundings. But best of all for Jim and the scouts at Pinewood, is that the diffuser requires no electricity or moving parts near the water which makes the system entirely safe for swimming and for all of the centre’s water based activities.

Since installing the Air Flo 3 system, Jim says: “The circulation and improved oxygenation of the water has massively improved the quality in terms of clarity. I think it’s the best it’s potentially ever been.” Getting the lake back into a safe and working condition is a relief all round after Jim was forced to cancel the scout’s water activity programme last summer: “We had an exceptional drought so water temperature was high, water levels were dropping and conditions were perfect for an algae bloom. It went toxic very quickly and I had to shut the lake. We couldn’t do any activities until I was able to get it back under control,” Jim recounts.

Thanks to this Otterbine solution, the Pinewood lake is ready to be used for a summer programme of activities, but it’s not just the scouts that are benefitting from the new system. Jim says: “We’re seeing a lot more fish and amphibians in the lake, and the marginal plants are all really thriving too.”

Cleaning up the lake area is just the first step in Jim’s grand plan: “Now the lake is in a stable condition the next stage is the surrounding woodland and making it far more accessible. Where previously it was overgrown, we’re removing a lot of the Rhododendron and replacing it with indigenous broadleaf species, making the whole site far more ecologically viable.

URBAN GREEN SPACE ROOT MANAGEMENT

Traditional root barrier solutions

Typically, traditional UK root barriers have been impermeable, limiting natural hydrology, impeding the natural movement of nutrients and potentially promoting localised surface flooding. Overseas we still see barriers using active chemical herbicides used with a questionable effect on local wildlife, agriculture and human health.

CuTex - a tested and trusted root barrier

Green spaces deliver a wide array of environmental, social and economic benefits. Only in recent times have we truly understood the harmful effect of urbanisation, the loss of greenbelt and the need for SUDs.

Trees play a vital role – absorbing carbon dioxide, releasing oxygen and controlling the rainwater entering watercourses, reducing the likelihood of flooding. The Woodland Trust suggest ‘trees can reduce outdoor and indoor pollution by an incredible 50%’. It’s also widely accepted that green space can enhance mental health and wellbeing.

The negative impact of urban trees

In some cases, however, structures, services or infrastructure can be

damaged by tree roots – directly through pressure or indirectly through subsidence.

Structural damage is generally only an outcome where trees’ uptake is within shrinkable clay soils leading to subsidence. Buildings with comparatively shallow foundations are most vulnerable. Roots may enter drains causing blockages or cavities.

Remedial action is inconvenient, costly and time consuming and in extreme cases prompts legal action. However time and money may be saved through planning or retrospective maintenance. Installing a permeable barrier will allow root systems to exist without being detrimental to neighbouring infrastructure.

CuTex is a permeable and safe solution for urban green space, tree management and invasive plant strategies. This composite root barrier is a geosynthetic filter/ separator that releases natural Cu2 ions into the soil to create a safe chemical barrier, which inhibits root growth through the creation of a ‘zone of inhibition’. It’s tested to the internationally-recognised standard (PD CEN/TS 14416:2014

– Determining resistance to roots) with various species including Japanese Knotweed.

CuTex is useful in many environments:

For protection of structures –foundations, footings and walling

• Below pavements for the reduction of maintenance

• As a vertical barrier to prevent transboundary root impact

• To contain tree roots retrospectively following subsidence intervention

• Within urban planters, raised beds or public space to prevent roots blocking drains

• For protection of septic tanks and stormwater attenuations systems

To protect against tree roots affecting services, such as pipework or ducting

SOLUFORM’S BAGWORK SOLUTIONS

In all, the project was completed in just 7 days utilising 16 pallets of Underwater bagwork and 12 Pallets of Above Water bagwork, equating to 19.3m3. The major benefit was the contractor did not need to dewater the river or provide costly or heavy duty plant to put the product into isolated rural location. It allowed an experienced team to hand place the bagwork in a cost effective and timely manner.

When the client needed to repair significant river bank erosion and protect bridge abutments from continual scour in a fast moving river water Soluform provided the ideal solution.

Part of the product selection process was to ensure the product used would have no impact on the environment or the surrounding riverbank habitat. A product was needed that could be installed both below and above the waterline to repair the river bank and protect it from future scour, but whilst not needing to dewater the river.

Soluform’s Underwater 32N bagwork with a biodegrable liner was the ideal solution.

The Underwater Bagwork was placed below the waterline in a stretcher bond pattern and pinned together with the purpose made U shaped rebar pins that create a path to let water in to hydrate the concrete, but ensure no cement fines escape that may affect the ecology of the river.

As the river level is continually changing as a result of regular rainfall, a further 1m wall was added with the Soluform Above Water bagwork with a water soluble liner to provide additional scour protection on both sides of the bridge and corresponding river banks.

The solution provided a hard engineering application that offered the client the confidence of a durable and robust, but environmentally friendly structure which provided the assured longevity of the bridge and surrounding embankment.

The material has been used extensively over the last 5 years in the Highways, Rail and Water/Flood sectors throughout the UK. It provides hardwearing and durable solutions for applications such as scour protection, void filling, underpinning, the formation of headwalls to culverts and bridges, or protection of riverbanks, walls and bridges and retaining walls.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO PLANNING A LIGHTING SCHEME WITH CONFIDENCE

Spending time in the garden is one of life’s joys and incorporating some lighting into your outdoor space will really help to make the most of the warmer evenings. Here, Mara Rypacek Miller, MD at Industville, gives us her top tips on how best to light your garden, whether that’s a modern space with a trendy outdoor kitchen and bar for entertaining, or a more traditional cottage garden in which to relax at the end of the day.

1. Plan your Layout

Plan where you want your lighting to be placed and what level of brightness you need. Uplights for example, can be cleverly placed to illuminate trees, pergolas, architectural elements, or sculptures, creating dramatic shadows and highlighting the

beauty of the garden, whereas downlighting help to brighten pathways and seating areas. By placing these fixtures strategically, the landscape can be transformed into a mesmerising display of light and shadows, regardless of the time of year and what the weather brings.

2. Focus on Focal Points

Task lighting is an essential aspect of outdoor lighting and is typically used to provide focused illumination for specific activities or areas within the garden. This could include installing pendant lights or wallmounted fixtures to provide focused lighting for cooking areas, outdoor dining and bars, or reading nooks. These fixtures can be positioned in order that they provide both functionality and visual interest.

3. Use Layers of Light

To create an atmosphere that looks great in the evening as well as throughout the year, consider incorporating a combination of lighting techniques. Layering is a popular method that involves using different types of lighting to create depth and eye-catching features. Start with ambient lighting, which is used to create a soft, overall illumination that sets the general mood and provides a comfortable level of brightness throughout the outdoor space. This can be achieved with string lights suspended above seating areas, lanterns placed strategically throughout the garden, or wall sconces near outdoor living spaces. Next add task lighting for areas which require focussed light for specific activities, before completing the look with some accent lighting. This is used to show

off parts of the garden you really want to highlight such as beautiful architectural features, sculptures, trees or water features.

4. Choose Lights which have a Timeless Appeal

When it comes to outdoor lighting, metallic light fixtures are an excellent choice due to their durability and aesthetic appeal. Metal finishes like pewter, brass and copper work beautifully against brickwork, wooden fencing, concrete and other natural elements. The timeless appeal of metal fixtures also lends itself particularly well to coordination with other garden furniture and accessories. Along with adding interest with texture and shine, sleek metals can also bring a sense of luxury to an outside space.

6.

It’s important to consider the practical aspects of outdoor lighting as well. Look for fixtures from trusted suppliers with high IP ratings, indicating their ability to withstand dust and water ingress. For garden lights that are installed in covered or partially covered areas, such as under a porch, pergola, or patio roof look for a rating of IP44 or above. If however, you are looking lights that are going to be exposed to direct outdoor elements, such as rain, wind, or dust you will need a rating of at least IP65.

OF LUMENA’S INNOVATIVE OUTDOOR LIGHTING DESIGNS FOR 2023

Lumena manufacture and supply innovative & professional, outdoor lighting and aim to impress and inspire this Autumn with revolutionary products launching at various trade shows: ‘GroundsFest’ (Stoneleigh Park, 20th – 21st Sept.) UKCW (NEC 3rd-5th Oct.) and Futurescape (Excel, 21st – 22nd Nov.)

Must-see products that will be showcased include:

• One of the UK’s only Timber Solar Bollard Lights – the Heavy Duty RADIATA EDISOL

This ultra sustainable path light, combining timber and technology, launched last year and has already been installed within smart environmentally conscious developments such as those by Cadeby Homes. A smart solar head and toughened diffuser gives 360 light spread from the top of the pressure treated timber pine post mounted 400mm in-ground.

• The 240v MARINA is a super heavy-duty 2mm thick marine grade (316) stainless steel bollard which is extra robust and built to withstand harsher weather and busy environments. Aluminium louvres in the head ensure ‘anti-glare’

illumination. ‘316’ is the highest grade of stainless steel making the Marina ideal for use as amenity lighting for larger, commercial areas. A professional root mount version is available in the 1.0m height, as well as photocell and even PIR motion sensor options.

• The Solid Brass HILOSPOT in our beautiful, brushed rustic bronze finish, is a must for those looking to source high-end wall spotlights that will last for years! Following on from Lumena’s popular twin spotlight range, the Brass Hilospot is available in 12v or 240v and is highly weatherproof.

• The HELIOSOL is the ultimate streamline Solar Floodlight. Compact and sturdy in design, it is made from durable die-cast aluminium with a solid steel bracket for extra sturdiness. The output is exceptionally bright; available in 200w, 300w and 400w, ranging between 2600 lumens and 4800 lumens. Each kit comprises of an LED floodlight, separate solar panel, 2m plug & play connector cable and a multi-function remote control for various time and brightness settings.

• Following the success of the Solar Bollard Range, three SOLAR PIR MOTION SENSOR BOLLARDS have been launched. These are the Panama, Olympia and Litecharga with PIR. They use the same highcapacity Lithium batteries to retain charge, but instead of gradual dimming sequences, they illuminate at a constant 50% until the sensor is triggered to give 100% brightness.

• More professional solar products have been added to the range including: the ‘SOLDIAL’ IP67 walk-over solar in-ground light with 150mm stainless steel bezel (IK08); and the ‘SIGNA’ high output, adjustable solar sign light / down light - both amazing lighting solutions!

If you plan to visit the shows, the Lumena team will be on hand to talk you through and demonstrate any of the products and discuss any upcoming projects you may have.

CENTURION CLUB THANK GEORGE BROWNS AND BARONESS FOR SUPPORT DURING SUCCESSFUL LIV GOLF TOURNAMENT

Having been machinery partners to Hertfordshire’s Centurion Club for a number of years, George Browns recently played a pivotal role in the successful delivery of the LIV Golf League London event in early July. The supply of additional equipment and service training was the result of six months of intricate planning between Course Manager Andrew Garland, Stuart Gray from Baroness and David Fisher, Area

Sales Manager at George Browns’ Chesham branch. The result, says Andrew, was “outstanding support and a perfect playing surface from start to finish!”

Nestled into rural countryside to the west of St Albans, the Centurion Club delivers a mixture of open, undulating holes combined with challenging woodland-lined holes, delivering a feeling of maturity

to the club which opened to members and the public in 2013.

“Our relationship with George Browns was cemented roughly four years ago after we fell victim to the theft of our tees mowers” explains Andrew. “David lent us their demonstration Baroness mowers to get us out of a really tricky situation at the time, and the team ended up liking the mowers that much that we purchased them! Since then, any

136 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine GROUNDSKEEPING

time we’re in the market for a new machine, we’ll get David in and nine times out of ten, that’s the machine we purchase.”

Andrew and his team of 12 currently run a fleet of Kubota tractors and RTV utility vehicles, three fairway and four tees mowers from Baroness along with a Redexim Top-Brush and Verti-Drain – all supplied by the Chesham depot of George Browns.

“We started preparing for the LIV Golf League event in January. I sat down with Stuart and David to draw up a list of what we’d need – not just extra equipment but ensuring that the machinery already in the shed was performing as it should. My team received excellent service training in the run-up to July to

get the fairway mowers in tip-top condition, and my mechanic was then advised on the correct way to grind them and set them up.”

In addition to training, George Browns also loaned the club a triple greens mower, four extra Baroness hand tee mowers, a rough mower and an aprons machine. “We had six additional team members from the Turf Institute of South Africa and a further ten volunteers who all had to get stuck in and straight out with the equipment. All of them found the machines easy to use and were particularly impressed by the quality of cut.” Andrew concludes, “All of this, together with the support provided throughout the event, helped the whole tournament run smoothly.”

Commenting on the relationship, David Fisher says, “It has been a real privilege to work closely with our franchises to maximise the knowledge we could provide to Andrew and his team in what promises to be a celebratory decade year for the club. All at George Browns congratulate Centurion Club on the tournament, and we look forward to continuing to build on this success.”

Stuart Gray adds, “It’s been great working with Andy and his fantastic team and supporting them through the LIV tournaments in both 2022 and 2023, cementing the level of support Baroness and its dealers are proud to deliver to the industry.”

MEASURE UP TO KNAPSACK CALIBRATION

In an era of rising prices and green credentials, optimising the quantity of treatment liquids you apply can benefit the bottom line and aid biodiversity.

Knapsack sprayer calibration is key in achieving best practice and ProLawnCare UK runs courses for operatives to help ensure they run sprayers to maximum efficiency, while limiting environmental impact.

“It’s key to apply the dose appropriate to the application,” says managing director Richard Salmon. “Overdosing can stress the grass plant and risk liquids entering watercourses. Underdosing though could mean you may end up applying more liquid than’s needed, by repeating the application which didn’t work first time because it was under dosed.”

The company already works closely with lawncare specialist providersthe knapsack calibration course is a new addition to their services.

“Three factors have to be right to achieve the magic number for the correct and accurate application of the prescribed liquid application. “ Richard explains, “walking speed, nozzle output and spray width, to create a simple solution to apply the product mixture accurately. The choice of nozzle is important too, whether choosing to use an anvil/deflector or flat fan for the appropriate treatment.

“The problem is that PA1 and PA6 appears to only train operators to pass an exam, rather than teaching them the practicalities of treating lawns and understanding sprayer calibration in a practical way, which is why we have introduced our course to meet a need across the sector.”

Richard uses Cooper Pegler CP3 2000 knapsacks to demonstrate correct calibration methods. “They’ve been my go-to sprayers for 25 years - My first one lasted 15 years. I believe in buying well, buying once.”

He also stresses the importance of regular maintenance and correct practice in limiting sprayer downtime and ensuring long lifetime. “ I see very tired and ineffective nozzles when I test out a trainee on day one of the course We spray water on a dry, concreted area and to the amazement of the operative it often highlights an erratic spray pattern they are generating.

“Always flush your sprayer out after every job - never leave chemicals in there, especially overnight. Liquids such as ferrous sulphate are corrosive and will damage the sprayer’s metal parts, such as in the trigger.”

Richard concludes: “Knapsacks have more flexibility in applying a variety of treatments in one tank mixture, which is why I’m encouraging more operators to apply liquid feeds, including seaweed and wetting agents all in one single pass.”

PROFITABLE SOIL PREPARATION WITH THE TURF TEQ POWER RAKE

When preparing soil for turf, grass seed or wild flowers, what’s the best piece of equipment to use?

A rotavator will churn up the ground, bringing stones and debris to the top, leaving four of five inches of lumpy, soft soil that will need to be re-consolidated and top-raked in order to achieve a firm, stone-free surface. No matter what compaction method is used, the job will be timeconsuming and the sub-soil will rarely be as firm as it was previously. Consequently, it is liable to slump when the first serious fall of rain comes along, and the client will expect the contractor to return to site to rectify the problem.

The profitable alternative is to use the Turf Teq Power Rake. It has twice the working width of a rotavator and is capable of a much faster working speed. The machine tills only the top layer, so doesn’t disturb the sub-soil.

First, angle the rake box left or right to work the stones into windrows for easy collection and disposal. Whilst doing this, the Rake is already starting to grade the site and produce a fine tilth. Next, pivot the head straight and drive it across the area in two or three directions in order to complete the job. Because the machine tills only the top layer (max 25mm), the soil is immediately ready for use. You don’t have to reconsolidate it as you would if you used a rotavator.

You now have a level, rough-raked site ready to accept turf. If you are seeding, you just need to touch in the wheel marks with a hand rake.

The Turf Teq Power Rake will also: facilitate repair of an existing lawn without lifting the turf

• spread topsoil evenly

• break up compacted gravel areas or paths, golf buggy paths and similar surfaces prior to relevelling.

Manufactured in USA, the Turf Teq machine has hydrostatic drive; hardened steel rotor teeth with tungsten tips; diff lock; simple controls and a Honda GXV390 petrol engine.

STIHL TO EXHIBIT AT GROUNDSFEST 2023

STAND OSA 30, STONELEIGH PARK (20-21 SEPTEMBER)

STIHL will be showcasing its full AP System range of professional battery tools at the first GroundsFest 2023 exhibition, highlighting how cordless tools can meet the varying needs of landscapers and groundscare teams.

Visitors to the STIHL stand will be able to see the new PS 3000, STIHL’s first portable 230V power supply,

providing users with a quiet, low maintenance and emission-free alternative to petrol-powered generators. Weighing only 19.8kg and boasting a 3.6kW power output, the new PS 3000 offers a high power-toweight ratio and is one of the most powerful portable power supply units in its weight class.

Other new tools available for professional users to get their hands on at the exhibition will be the BGA 300 backpack blower, HSA 100 cordless hedge trimmer, and the updated MSA 220 C-B chainsaw.

The BGA 300, STIHL’s first cordless backpack blower for professional users, offers high performance and a significantly less disruptive sound thanks to its innovative STIHL Noise Reduction System (NRS). Thanks to the STIHL NRS, the BGA 300 produces fewer high pitch frequencies often associated with cordless blowers, meaning operation is much more pleasant and less intrusive for bystanders.

In addition, The HSA 100 boasts a 60cm double-sided, double-edged cutting blade, which offers improved cutting performance due to the large cutter spacing of the blades, whereas the updated MSA 220 C-B is a robust and powerful cordless chainsaw, ideal for felling small trees, pruning and cutting to length.

STIHL will also be showcasing a range of petrol-powered tools on its demo plot, allowing professional users to see a direct comparison between battery and petrol performance.
