Check out Green Retreats garden room buildings as the perfect yearround summer house.

TOP 5 FUN SUMMER HOUSE IDEAS: 1) Garden Bar Home bars and garden bars soared in popularity during lockdown. With pubs and bars being closed

and nowhere to drive to, a lot of the country turned their hand to bartending. All that practise is soon to pay off ready for summer celebrations! Whether just for your household, with an intimate group, or a large gathering (when the time is right) - a garden bar summer house is sure to be a massive hit and the envy of all your neighbours.

for all the family! Grab a projector, a screen, some popcorn and away you go.

3) Reading Room Reading rooms are a classic use for summer houses. There’s something

romantic about the thought of curling up with a good book in your secret garden reading den. Escaping the hustle and bustle of home and making some time to read is great for your wellbeing - especially with peace, quiet and gorgeous views.

GARDEN DESIGN Green Retreats Summer Houses: A traditional summer house is little more than a shed in construction, but a Green Retreats garden room offers a whole lot more. A garden building from Green Retreats is built using the same high-quality materials used in modern home-building, making it much more like an extension of your home than a shed. Insulated for year-round use: Premium insulation is used throughout so your insulated summer house can be used all-yearround in even the coldest weather. Plus, heating is included in the price!

Design: Pinnacle by Green Retreats, Size: 5.5m x 5m, Price of building with standard options: £30,295

Maintenance Free: No need to treat, paint or maintain as standard for a hassle-free addition to your home. 10 Year Guarantee: A comprehensive 10-year guarantee comes with every building for total peace of mind. Planning Permission Rarely Required: More often than not, adding a summer house is a simple and easy process that doesn’t require planning permission. If planning permission is required, then the team at Green Retreats would take care of the application on your behalf.

Design: Edge by Green Retreats, Size: 6m x 4m, Price of building with standard options: £26,995

4) Games Room Having the space inside the home for games equipment isn’t often likely, with rooms already taken up with their intended purposes (living rooms, dining rooms, studies etc.) So creating a new space in the garden offers all the opportunity to create a unique, fun and exciting games room! For good measure, add a bar in there too and no doubt this will be the most used room in the house (out of the house).

5) Hot Tub Room Hot tubs and spas are great for your overall wellbeing and fantastic fun to have at home. Having a hot tub and an adjacent summer house is an instant staycation solution! If you shut your eyes you could imagine you are almost anywhere.

Deluxe Outdoor Living Pod

THE OUTDOOR LIVING POD™ FROM CARIBBEAN BLINDS What is an Outdoor Living Pod™? As the exclusive brand name for the original louvered roof pergola canopy, the Caribbean Blinds Outdoor Living Pod™ provides the ultimate luxury, all-weather, outdoor living space that gives the customer complete, year-round control of the elements. Ingeniously designed for those who want to live life outdoors, the innovative rotating louvered roof permits the user to play with light and shade, offering an open-air alfresco feel when left fully open, and ensuring a completely water, wind and even snow-tight roof when closed. Optional windproof screens, ambient LED perimeter lighting and instant infra-red heaters mean a

cosy and pleasant environment can be achieved whatever the weather. Built for durability and longevity, the low maintenance, simple to use, Outdoor Living Pod™ is constructed from super strong, corrosion resistant, powder coated aluminium and adapts to any outdoor lounging or dining space, especially complementing hot tubs, swim spas, outdoor kitchens and even gyms.

Why is this product such a safe investment? A louvered roof manufactured by Caribbean Blinds is a safe investment. Caribbean Blinds manufacture premium systems, designed and engineered to last a lifetime. They offer a superior specification to any other on the

market, with numerous cutting edge design features and technology, along with added lifestyle and energy saving benefits all coupled with a service that is second to none and knowledge & expertise you would struggle to find elsewhere.

Where are they made? All the products are made by the specialist team here in the UK, designed and installed by the companies own technicians to exacting standards. They come with an industry leading, fully comprehensive 5-year guarantee covering parts, labour and the advantage of dealing directly with Caribbean Blinds as the manufacturer. This guarantees the highest quality from order to installation as they are in control Follow us @ludmagazine

of the whole process and also gives clients reassurance that should anything go wrong, they are only ‘down the road’. Furthermore, they can react quickly to demands and carry out many bespoke projects where they modify their solutions to suit as everything they need is here in the UK. Whilst the products are not the cheapest, they do offer the best value for money, combining style, function, durability and above all, expert advice and service from concept to completion.

What is the lifespan of an Outdoor Living Pod™ after installation? Everything that Caribbean Blinds manufactures is designed and built to last a lifetime. Realistically it will last 25+ years under normal use and subject to the client maintaining their product before any issues should arise. A client recently contacted Caribbean Blinds who

Prestige Outdoor Living Pod

had purchased one of their patio awnings circa 37 years ago, before the company turned limited; their awning hardware and fabric was fine but the switch which operated the motor had failed, a component part for £5…they tried to discuss a new awning, now that technology and fabrics have significantly advanced but……!

For the customer, how easy are the products to look after post installation? No harder than looking after the windows in your house, meaning you simply need to clean both the hardware and fabric to keep them looking like new. There is no annual or model specific servicing that needs doing. Everything is designed to be maintenance free, with the exception of cleaning, although all the materials used feature nano technology coatings that generate a self-clean effect, meaning that when it rains, the surface dirt and debris washes off our materials.

Are there any product requests that Caribbean Blinds can’t fulfil? The team can always find a solution for every application; however, it ultimately depends on client budget and preference. Sometimes, due to property construction, access or fixing details, solutions need independent frameworks and bespoke elements that add to the cost which might result in putting them outside their budgets. So yes, there are projects they haven’t fulfilled but not because they can’t find a solution, but because such solution is outside of expected costs. This is the perfect time to be upgrading your garden and outdoor living space for the ‘stay in the UK’ summer and an Outdoor Living Pod™ from Caribbean Blinds might just be what you are looking for!

FLEXIBLE STEEL EDGING Another unique design feature only found with CORE EDGE is our ‘dual lock’ mechanism – using double locking tabs, this provides a rigid strong connection between adjoining sections of edging. This helps to save time on large installs as long runs of edging can be joined together before being installed – as opposed to installing one section at a time and trying to adjoin the next section in the ground. CORE EDGE is laser cut for precision and then undergoes a hot dip galvanising process (except for our Core-Ten weathered finish) prior to being powder coated. Our powder coating technique uses a UV stable Akzo-Nobel powder to prevent colour fade and forms a hard wearing and durable scratch resistant surface to guarantee a 20 year plus lifespan. Powder coating provides a hard wearing and tougher finish compared to other conventional paint application methods as it will not crack or expand and contract in extremes of temperatures.

CORE EDGE is proudly manufactured in the UK and has a host of attributes that have made it such a popular choice. Unlike most other steel edging, ours features a unique fold along the centre of the ground spike to provide maximum strength, reinforcing the spike and making it ideal for use in tough ground conditions. However, if you

are installing our edging in soft or loamy soil, then our optional rebar pin & clip can be added to provide additional stability where required. An additional benefit of these optional pins is that they can be fitted after installation has started – so there is no need to lift a whole run of edging if you encounter softer soil part way during the install.

For ease of use, our domestic and trade packs each provide exactly 5 linear meters. The connecting overlap between sections is 75mm long and each section of CORE EDGE is 1075mm long to counteract this - which gives 5 finished linear meters when connected. We provide 6% more edge per pack than our nearest competitor. Available in 2 thickness – 1.6mm which is suitable for domestic schemes and 2.5mm heavy duty trade edging for heavier duty projects. Due to popular demand, we also offer the heavy-duty trade edging in longer lengths of 2.2m where larger amounts of steel edging are required, these longer lengths are invaluable in saving on installation time.

LANDSCAPING SERVICES

BRITISH ASSOCIATION OF LANDSCAPE INDUSTRIES LAUNCHES FRESH NEW BRAND 18

www.landud.co.uk

Follow us @ludmagazine

LANDSCAPING SERVICES The British Association of Landscape Industries has unveiled its new look ahead of its 50th year in business in 2022, marking the start of a new chapter in the Trade Association’s prestigious history. Spearheading the brand is the Association’s fresh, contemporary new identity, boldly updated for 2021 while celebrating its heritage. Following a three-year development cycle which saw the team at Landscape House carry out research and analysis, a series of stakeholder interviews and a brand positioning exercise, several significant changes were decided upon to improve the Association’s continued efforts to promote, support and inspire its members, the wider landscape services industry and the public. From 1st April 2021, Association members who have passed its stringent vetting procedures will be referred to as Accredited members, replacing the previous ‘Registered’ name. The team at Landscape House, supported by its board of directors, felt the replacement term was a more suitable choice for explaining the process companies went through in order to attain accreditation. Affiliate, the label used to promote members offering trade and publicfacing products and services has been dropped in favour of Supplier, a word that better describes that category of membership. So, in simple terms, a Registered Affiliate will now be known as an Accredited Supplier. The brand refresh has also brought with it changes to the way the

Association communicates, including a focus on high quality content to inform, educate and inspire. It will use its position as a thought-leader in British landscaping to draw attention to issues affecting the industry and lobby government, as well as developing its technical support offering. The rebrand will also bring a new approach to the Association’s identity, dropping the acronym ‘BALI’. Often confused with nonindustry terms, the Association’s new identity advertises a greater public-friendly position, simplified so it only displays the full company name that better describes the service offer. Chief Executive Wayne Grills commented, “This is an important moment for our Association and its members. We recognised, through talking with key stakeholders, that we needed to make changes to our brand to continue to build on our strong foundation and provide the high level of customer service our members expect. Next year our Trade Association celebrates 50 years and we wanted to be in the best shape possible to take full advantage of what that special milestone will bring. Expect further announcements of what we have planned later this year.” To support the launch of the new brand the team at Landscape House have refreshed all marketing and promotional materials for members, with the website bali.org.uk, suite of newsletters and popular journal Landscape News all receiving major design and/or functionality updates. Members can login to their member’s area bali.org.uk/login to download the new Accredited logo and brand guidelines (if their membership category permits), order vehicle stickers, download Use the Professionals leaflets and access their membership benefits portfolio which have also been updated.

LANDSCAPING SERVICES

GREEN-TECH IS A MAJOR SUPPLIER

TO NEW LEEDS SKELTON LAKE M1 SERVICES Green-tech supplied the majority of the landscaping materials which included over 200 tonnes of Greentree topsoil, 150 tonnes of compost, 300m3 of bark Mulch, in excess of 7000 Tubex Shrub Shelters and all of the tree ancillaries, which included stakes, belting, blocks and irrigation for 500 newly planted trees.

A £60 million services station was completed during 2020 in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The innovative new service station known as Leeds Skelton Lake Services is located at Junction 45 of the M1 and includes a business centre, food and beverage outlets and beautifully landscaped areas. Landscape Contractors Brambledown Landscapes Services were commissioned to undertake the soft landscaping of this huge

project which had to tie in with the natural environment of the nearby Skelton Lake and Gardens. They turned to their long-term supplier Green-tech for the landscaping materials and sundries. Skelton Lakes Service Station in Leeds is unlike any other. It boasts a twisting living roof and many unique landscape features. Brambledown Landscapes Services were responsible for constructing natural landscaping throughout the 30-acre service station site.

For the trees planted into the hard-landscaped areas Green-tech supplied in the region of 100m² of the urban tree planting system ArborRaft, along with 100 tonnes of ArborRaft soil and subsoil. Used together, the system combines geo-cellular ArborRaft units which lock together within the tree pit and nutrient-rich ArborRaft soil. Combined they provide essential load bearing support and reduce soil compaction within the tree pit to enable healthy root growth. Skelton Lake Services is open and has been very well received. It is considered a high quality “new concept” in Motorway Service Area design where visitors can take a break from their journey and relax whilst enjoying a beautifullylandscaped environment. Brambledown Yorkshire Manager, Sean Easton said: “It was a pleasure to work with Green-tech on this innovative major motorway services near Leeds. Working throughout the Corona pandemic obviously threw up many challenges, but we worked closely with Green-tech throughout to ensure all product deliveries were made on time and as required. Their product choice is excellent and their service levels and customer care is always outstanding. I would happily recommend them.”

GARDEN DESIGN

LANDSCAPES THAT ARE BOUNTIFUL AS WELL AS BEAUTIFUL

No it is not a cake sculpted to look like the South Downs, although that’s a nice idea, here we are talking about landscape design that integrates edible plants into the space. By using edibles in a landscape design a deeper connection with the garden or outdoor space can be encouraged. When there is something to be harvested or tended our natural instinct is to check on it. Imagine waiting for the first spears of asparagus to appear in spring or checking on the ripeness of the currents. This connection

22

www.landud.co.uk

with a garden and the outdoors has been shown to increase health way beyond just the nutrition gained from the crop. Incorporating edibles into the whole design is not just about putting in a veg patch but using the edibles as an aesthetically pleasing feature. In this way a garden or outdoor space can be bountiful as well as beautiful. The aim is to create low maintenance landscapes that fulfil multiple functions. Incorporating edibles into landscape designs the space can:

• Produce high nutrition high value, organic food • Create connection with our food • Reduce food miles, packaging and transport • Inspire children to connect with plants and the outdoors The majority of the edible plants used are perennial. This means that once established, they will continue to produce yields every year and in some cases the yield will increase year on year. Using lots of perennials also introduces new plants into diets as the majority of what we eat are annuals.

Follow us @ludmagazine

GARDEN DESIGN

Plants that fulfil multiple functions feature a lot in edible landscape design. For example, Calendula to many is just a marigold. However some of its functions include: • Edible petals of the flowers • Medicinal properties of the flowers • Great for attracting pollinators

• Great for attracting pest predators • Flowers all year in the right spot • Self seeds for multiplication A truly sustainable future is one where all needs are met at the place they are needed. Localising food production is a great and achievable solution that is available to most people.

By designing edible perennial ecosystems that require little maintenance and self-perpetuate a greener future can be achieved where diverse organic food is abundant and available.

GARDEN DESIGN

BUXUS BALL ALTERNATIVES The shape, form and structure provided by topiary balls or rounded mounds are pleasing to the eye providing a rhythm for the visitor and planting. Buxus balls are the epitome of the backbone plant for many a scheme whether used in a large scale commercial or domestic project. However, in recent years the prevalence of Buxus blight and Box Moth Caterpillar have forced our hand as an industry to come up with suitable viable alternatives to Buxus balls. There are many options available now and with a little flexible thinking and an acceptance that there will never be a plant as neat, easy to maintain and iconic as the humble Buxus ball, there are plenty to choose from that hit the spot. Ilex crenata and all the various cultivars are a popular choice with some options lending themselves well to being pruned into a ball shape. Ilex crenata has been said

24

www.landud.co.uk

to ‘not grow old bones’ but given all the correct soil requirements and aspects that larger Ilex require they will survive happily. An ericaceous soil and pruning back to shape twice a year in the growing season, good old Ilex crenata will fool the eye due to its similarity in looks to Buxus. New to market in the last couple of years and with a tight dense growth habit is Lonicera nitida Scoop with tiny leaves that take on a handsome red hue in the winter months. Scoop responds well to pruning and unlike most Lonicera nitida types does not send out wayward shoots after pruning. Scoop will not reach large proportions but the autumn and winter leaf colour more than makes up for that minor shortfall. For something with a little more colour and gloss to the leaf then Pittosporum are worth a nod with Beach Ball, Glo Ball, Golden Ball, Silver Ball alongside Golf Ball for rounded form with variegated foliage for added interest and Pittosporum tobira Nanum for glossy foliage and

delicious scented flowers in the summer. Pittosporum do not require any pruning to keep in shape and keep their form well. Pittosporum tobira Nanum can be slightly lazy in habit creating an undulating mound rather than a tight ball but once in flower you can forgive it that. With a slightly more relaxed attitude to what a topiary ball really constitutes then the options are many, varied and perhaps slightly more interesting in shape, stature and scent.

GARDEN DESIGN

THE LOW MAINTENANCE GARDEN This is because it is easy to clean and has a contemporary and calm ambience to it. When looking for an easy weed solution which is easy on the eye, slates can be used around plants to block weeds emerging. With creative design, planning and execution, your very own luxury haven can be enjoyed, with next to no maintenance required, whatever the season! Jack Dunckley... a 5-star luxury design service from start to finish.

With the majority of us looking at staying closer to home this year, it seems that our gardens will once again be the places that will bring us the most joy and peace. The Jack Dunckley team are starting to see a pattern of trends when it comes to their customer’s requests. The most popular desire when it comes to garden design has been that of the low maintenance type, but what does this actually mean and how does one achieve it? The Low Maintenance Garden combines beauty with practicality and offers a haven that can be enjoyed all year round with minimum effort. Here are some top tips when looking to create this type of garden:

Evergreen Plants Many evergreen plants are stunning and provide colour, texture and structure to garden designs all year round. Evergreens also provide cover and food for birds and can be useful privacy aids if grown as screens.

Low Maintenance Perennials Use perennials that are low maintenance, but will still add a splash of colour such as astilbe, achillea, coreopsis, hostas, echinacea. For aromas and a touch

30

www.landud.co.uk

of the Mediterranean utilise herbs such as sage, oregano and rosemary.

Mediterranean Trees Cypress trees, olive trees and palms are all plants that make us think of our holidays and as this year many of us will be having staycations in our own back gardens, it makes sense to bring our holidays to our own home! Make sure to choose varieties which are evergreen and will hold their structure all year round.

Easy for Cleaning and Weeding The Jack Dunckley team often use porcelain tiles when a design calls for outdoor flooring.

Plus, it’s made from 95% recycled materials, so it’s an eco-friendly choice that clients can feel good about. Featuring high-definition, grain patterns and rich, saturated colors, Trex decking offerings are nearly indistinguishable from timber textures. When it comes to deck designs, more homeowners are thinking outside the box. Regardless of the size of the garden – or budget – Brits no longer feel confined to a basic square space. Remodelers, designers and architects report increased interest from clients in decks with multiple levels, accent walls, curves and cantilevers.

A great deck can add valuable space to a home, and materials matter. Designed to deliver incredible durability, easy maintenance and lasting beauty, Trex composite decking offers performance, sustainability and aesthetic benefits over timber, as well as other outdoor surface materials.

ARTIFICIAL GRASS

NAMGRASS ANNOUNCES ECO-FRIENDLY ARTIFICIAL GRASS

A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION FOR THE ARTIFICIAL GRASS SECTOR Namgrass, the UK’s leading artificial grass company, is today announcing the launch of its new eco-friendly artificial grass products enriched with PURETi. Known for its air quality improvement and sustainable elements, PURETi coated namgrass is now available across all grasses within the company’s product line. One of just three licensed distributors in the UK, the product’s arrival comes at a time when the UK’s air pollution is being monitored daily during the COVID-19 pandemic. A PURETi treated metre squared of Namgrass is comparable to the air purifying effects of one

mature tree planted. Taking this into account plus the fact that the UK’s average garden size is 50m2, PURETi offers the same CO2 equivalent that planting 50 trees in a family back garden would achieve. Namgrass products have long been designed and manufactured to make them hard-wearing easy to clean and able to withstand heavy garden use. The addition of a PURETi treated surface means consumers will benefit from a reduction in dust, grime, mould, or algae build up, leading to an elimination of odours and a significant improvement in outdoor air quality.

Jared Gardner, Sales Director at Namgrass, commented: “Cutting edge technology has always been at the heart of the Namgrass brand and we are delighted to be able to now offer a sustainable solution to artificial grass across our range. One long lasting application of PURETi will save time, money, water, chemicals, and energy which in turn helps to cultivate a sustainable cleaner environment and reverse the pollution levels on our planet.”

ARIENS HAS THE EDGE IN ZERO-TURNS The introduction of the EDGE zero-turn mower from Ariens is a landmark in domestic lawn mowing. Manufactured in their UK factory, it reflects the engineering excellence Ariens is known for, and there can be no doubt it looks set to surpass anything else in its class.

Zero-turn mowing in the UK has been steadily growing as the alternative to the conventional lawn tractor. Intuitive, easy-touse controls coupled with total manoeuvrability mean zero-turns work at speed to outperform most lawn tractors, cutting grass in half

the time. The EDGE offers all this and more. With a zero-turn, you are free to spend less time mowing and more time enjoying your garden. Driven and steered by the rear wheels via two independent transmissions, the

Follow us @ludmagazine

TOOLS, PLANT & EQUIPMENT easy control levers are all you need to drive, brake, steer and spin on the spot. Zero-turn mowing is fast. You can whizz around at 6 mph, and at the end of the mowing row do a 180-degree turn, align the deck edge with the row you’ve just cut and keep on going. You have reduced the cutting time by 50% over mowing with a lawn tractor. No more turn, reverse, turn again and straighten out and no stopping. Without a lot of forward and backward movement, the result is outstanding cut quality. All zero-turns do this, but the EDGE brings a host of other benefits to the mowing experience. Ariens has built a tough, durable mower with a wide range of commercial style features at an affordable price. With its Ariens 635cc engine, the EDGE is powerful, but Ariens also build it for comfort. The plush, highback adjustable seat with natural airflow enhances operator comfort while keeping you cool. Stepping aboard is easier compared to a lawn tractor. You just lift the handles and get seated. All the controls are positioned in ergonomic, easily accessible locations and mostly hand-operated, making this zeroturn simple to use and an effortless driving experience for everyone.

The EDGE comes in two versions: EDGE 34 with an 86cm (34”) cutter deck and the EDGE 42 with a 107cm (42”) deck. The commercialstyle, four-point deck hanging system enhances deck stability and robustness for a premium cut quality. There is a foot-operated deck lift for simple changes of deck height. By pushing the pedal forward and using the lever you can select seven from cutting heights, from 3.8cm to 12.7cm (1.5” to 4.5”). The large 50.8cm (20”) high, 20.3cm (8”) wide rear tyres are gentle on turf, delivering excellent traction and absorbing shock on uneven ground to give a smoother, more comfortable ride. The EDGE comes with a 2-year/150 hours warranty and a range of accessories is available.

JACOBSEN DOUBLE FROM FAIRWAYS GM

HELPS HAMILTON PARK RACE AHEAD Track Manager, Darren Bissett, says Hamilton Park’s turf will be more than ready for the start of their flat racing season scheduled to begin in May. “Course maintenance wise we are on schedule with the first cut of both the track and the lawns due within the next week, assuming conditions prevail,” said Darren. Darren joined the team at Hamilton Park from Ayr Racecourse exactly 12 months ago, and his first year in the job could hardly have been more unexpected.

40

www.landud.co.uk

In June 2020, a delayed and shortened fixture list got underway with eleven race meetings successfully staged behind closed doors by the time the season concluded at the end of September. One huge positive for 2020 was that local grounds care dealer, Fairways GM, delivered two new Jacobsen mowers - the HR500 Rotary Mower for the track and the TR320 for Hamilton Park’s extensive fine turf areas. “The machines were ordered by my predecessor after several

very positive recommendations. They’ve worked fantastically and I’m genuinely very impressed at how effective they are. The HR500 has great width at 3.5 metres which allows us to cut the whole track with just five circuits in around 2.5 hours. It makes quick work and leaves a very clean cut. The room that you get in the cab is exceptional; really spacious, so it’s great for the operator. Also, once you are finished, it’s incredibly easy to maintain. “In March, we will probably only cut the track once a week until it gets a bit warmer and soil temperatures

Follow us @ludmagazine

TOOLS, PLANT & EQUIPMENT

rise, however come May we’ll have increased that to at least twice a week. Over the summer months cutting increases to three or four times a week as the fertilisation programme takes effect. During the racing season we like to cut the day before a fixture, and then again 48 hours afterwards. Height of the cut is set at 6cm for the next month or so and when racing starts, we’ll allow it to grow a bit longer before cutting it to around 9cm. Changing the height of cut on the decks takes around half an hour and it’s a case of moving just ten pins, so it’s very straightforward.”

“Away from the track, our lawns are a great backdrop for weddings and events as well as racedays, and hopefully this summer they will see a lot more visitors. Because it’s been a bit milder these past few weeks the lawns are starting to grow. The TR320 delivers an exceptionally fine, effective cut and it is so good at striping the lawns and leaving a professional finish - everything is really level. We cut the track and the lawns on the same day so there will be times when we are cutting lawns four times a week throughout the summer.

Last year, sadly, we were unable to welcome racegoers and event guests alike and so we’re working hard to ensure the grounds will be at their spectacular best for when we can open our gates to the public once more. Rob Hogarth, Fairways GM’s Area Sales Manager, said: The HR500 can cut all day long. Robust and smooth, it has built in consistency delivered via a feature called Automated Assist Drive, so no matter the conditions the finish remains clean and sharp. The big cab that Darren likes gives the operator a superior view of what’s going on out-front; controls are positioned exactly where they are required, so you can also be extremely precise. The TR320 is good in tight spaces and challenging terrain. It’s a wizard at stripes so is great at keeping locations pristine and interesting, a nice touch for important wedding photography.”

NUTRIGROW EXPANDS THEIR SPORTS TURF RANGE WITH NUTRIGROW CRF Nutrigrow has expanded their Sports Turf range of fertilisers with the introduction of Nutrigrow CRF, a controlled release fertiliser that has been specifically designed for sports turf. Nutrigrow CRF has been formulated to release nutrients for 4-6 months, based on an average temperature of 20C. In testing Nutrigrow have seen a significant longer release period during the cooler months, which has led to Groundsmen applying the product in late Autumn. As there are still growing days over the Winter months then the nutrient will be released and feed the turf. This has led to far healthier pitches and other sports surfaces going into

deck and 1300litre high tip collector allows you tackle the thickest of grass whilst collecting and leaving a pristine finish everytime. The ability to cut and collect without blocking, thanks to its turbine driven straight through chute, enables the SF551 to take on whatever the weather throws at it. Should you also wish to scarify those areas of turf and collect all in one pass the blades can easily be swapped in Muthing Flail deck to scarify blades in order to renovate the turf in the autumn. Suitable for all weathers the unbeatable SXG range of mowers from 13.5hp to 21hp perform without faltering whether it is raining, or dry. The SXG mower range has a number of attributes that allow the machine to cut and collect with no blockages and leave a superior finish everytime. The rear axle is mounted high under the seat out of the way with chain drive to each of the rear wheels, this allows the grass to flow straight through from the deck to the collector with no obstructions so avoiding unwanted blockages. For maximum airflow from the decks through to the collector the airvents on top of the mower deck can be opened or closed to allow as much grass and debris as possible to be picked up and passed through to the collector. This is especially useful when collecting heavier wetter grass. In the summer these can be closed to avoid excess dust and debris being kicked up when cutting dry areas.

INFINICUT FLEET ®

BECOMES THE NEW WAY FOR WEMBLEY Wembley Stadium, the very heart of English football, is now the home for five 34” INFINICUT® FL mowers. While the INFINICUT’s lithium battery power fulfils The FA’s drive towards increasing sustainability, and saw them make the shortlist, it was the functionality of the floating head units coupled with the quality of cut that sealed the deal for Grounds Manager Karl Standley. Sustainability has been a key issue for The FA Group since the new Wembley Stadium opened its doors in 2007. The sustainability strategy, governed by FAST – The FA Group’s Sustainability Team – is actively looking at ways of reducing both waste and the use of fossil fuels, meaning that when it came to looking for a new fleet of stadium mowers, the electric route was the way to go. However, as Karl explains, “Having an electric mower is great, but with one of the world’s most iconic pitches to present and a hugely varied schedule of both sports and events, it is crucial that any equipment we invest in delivers from an operational perspective.”

48

www.landud.co.uk

“Lockdown last year gave us the opportunity to really look indepth at the different options available. Three things really stood out for me with the INFINICUT® machines – one was the battery life; another was the versatility but perhaps the biggest thing was the balance. A football pitch will never be 100% even, there will always be an undulation of a couple of millimetres here and there and with the INFINICUT®, it almost ‘sticks’ to the surface. The floating head reads the pitch, every camber, every tiny movement and the whole team was very impressed by that and it shows in the quality of finish.” Since taking delivery of the quintet of 34” mowers in the Autumn of 2020, the INFINICUT®s are now the main machines used for preparing the playing surface, primarily down to the cut quality. However, the additional benefits of the battery technology are also making themselves apparent. “We’ve had all five machines running together in preparation for a number of fixtures and the silence in the stadium is evident. It’s an eerily quiet

experience – prep has never been quieter - but the difference has also been noticed by our colleagues and the TV crews we have on site.” Karl adds, “In addition, the massive reduction in HAV for the operators is another important benefit that has come to light. We test all of our equipment annually to enable our team to keep an accurate track on exposure and in the last round of tests, the INFINI’s came out with the lowest HAV score of the equipment we have.” With the INFINICUT® fleet delivering on all fronts for the Wembley team, the benefits are also due to be felt further down the chain with The FA actively working on finding the previous mower fleet a new home at clubs and organisations at grassroots level.

EV Charging - Regeneration - Parks - Sports & Leisure

This £4m scheme forms part of Liverpool City Region’s Sustainable Transport Enhancement Package (STEP) and focuses on the regeneration of the central reservation along Princes Boulevard and upgrading the carriageway and footpaths along Princes Boulevard and Princes Road. By installing the 1km long cycle path within the central reservation - a first for Liverpool - the scheme’s aim is to improve cycle connectivity between south Liverpool and the city centre, with the plan to install a new Citybike station along the route. The new cycle path would also form an extension of a new ‘green corridor’ to Otterspool that is due to be delivered in the next 12 months. The URBAN Green UP project has £3.4m of EU funding to install and test three ‘green corridors’ across the city, which was a key recommendation in the city council’s Strategic Green and Open Spaces Review. We are really pleased to have been involved with this project. WT Jenkins installed the Feeder Pillars and the images of the completed project are fabulous. We hope the residents of Toxteth and everyone who will be using this innovative link to Liverpool City Centre love it, it certainly looks amazing and we congratulate Liverpool City Council and all who were involved with this scheme. www.fisherandcompany.co.uk

NEW JOHN DEERE RIDE-ON MOWERS Among a host of new additions to the company’s lawn tractor and zeroturn mower ranges for 2021, John Deere has expanded its commercial ZTrak ZTR range to include two new petrol models and two rear-discharge decks to meet customer demand. Offering a high-output yet compact solution for groundscare professionals, particularly when working in restricted spaces, John Deere zero-turn mowers are based on a robust, heavy-duty frame including a ROPS. The high-gauge PRO steel

rotary cutting decks feature a deep mowing chamber designed to handle more grass for increased capacity. This increases airflow so that a quality cut can be achieved even when mowing at maximum speed. The new Z740R semi-commercial mower is powered by a Kawasaki 23.5hp commercial grade petrol engine, while the Z950R commercial machine has a larger Kawasaki 27hp petrol engine and is equipped with Michelin Tweel X Turf airless radial tyres as standard (these are

optional on the smaller model). Both mowers feature an adjustable operator platform and ComfortGlide suspension seat with armrests, with easy access to a quick-change heightof-cut dial and on-the-go tracking adjustments to maximise mowing performance. The Z740R offers a choice of highcapacity 122 or 137cm (48 or 54in) side-discharge decks, while the larger Z950R is available with 137 or 152cm (54 or 60in) side-discharge and new 152cm (60in) rear-discharge decks.

TOOLS, PLANT & EQUIPMENT

John Deere’s existing Stage V diesel engine zero-turn mowers, the Z994R 24.7hp and Z997R 37.4hp models, can now be fitted with a choice of 152cm (60in) side-discharge and new 152 or 183cm (60 or 72in) rear-discharge decks in addition to the previously available side-discharge options, depending on model. The new heavy-duty rear-discharge decks employ a single-belt deck design for easy maintenance, and are mulching enabled for a cleaner finish. These have been introduced to the John Deere zero-turn mower range for the first time, specifically for those customers who require this particular configuration to meet contract requirements.

Follow us @ludmagazine

All these new zero-turn mowers also provide easy access for servicing and on-board diagnostics, while available attachments include a tool carrier, striping brush and storage tray. Available in Europe since 2019, when they were introduced on John Deere’s ZTrak 900 Series commercial ZTR mowers, the Michelin X Tweel Turf airless radial tyre virtually eliminates tyre downtime from punctures when compared to traditional pneumatic tyres, and is almost maintenance free.

It has the same dimensions and bolt pattern as a standard tyre, but features automotive rubber technology that allows the tread to last up to three times longer. The Tweel also reduces ground compaction and increases ride quality, which is enhanced by the mowers’ ComfortGlide seat.

BRETT LANDSCAPING LAUNCHES INVICTA Independent concrete paving manufacturer, Brett Landscaping, has introduced the new high performance Invicta range, ideal for application in contemporary driveways, patios and pathway projects as well as urban streetscapes. The Invicta range is the first block paving product to use the new AggTech surface technology developed by the company. Each paving block has a specially formulated surface layer creating a hard-wearing block with a durable but vibrant finish which shimmers in different lights.

in four colours: Pearl, Moonstone, Onyx and Citrine. The colours are complementary so the different shades can be laid and arranged to meet a bespoke design brief, or to the preferred style and taste of the homeowner or client.

Through this new AggTech process unique natural aggregates are used on the surface of each paving block to create a stunning durable finish. The Invicta range will be available

- 600x200mm - 300x200mm - 300x100mm - 200x200mm - 200x100mm

For added design flexibility the block paving will be available in five single size packs using 800mm thick blocks, with sizes ranging

CONCRETE & STONEWORK There is also an Invicta Trio pack which is made up of three different block sizes in 60mm thickness: - 105x140mm - 140x140mm - 210x140mm The paving blocks can be laid in a range of patterns and the premium surface mix creates a hard-wearing, high performance paving just as suitable for high foot traffic in a public realm project, using the 80mm blocks, as it is for a domestic setting using the 60mm blocks. Included as part of the Invicta range are additional Invicta Flow paving blocks which are manufactured with a unique nib design for applications where permeable paving and a SuDS solution is a requirement. CONCRETE & STONEWORK Dan said: “The finish is fantastic, it cuts smoothly, goes down nicely and blends really well – this product is a game-changer for block paving. “It’s great for using on a driveway, particularly on a slope, as it grips so well. It’s also a really good alternative to offer when customers ask for resin with block paving so much easier to repair.

Invicta Onyx

“There hasn’t been any efflorescence, no faults in the design and it blends really nicely. So many people have asked what the product is when walking past my drive especially when the sun is shining and you can see the sparkles. You really need to see it in the flesh to see how good it looks.” Jose Carles, National Technical Manager, Brett Landscaping said: “We are excited to introduce our new manufacturing facility and AggTech process, with Invicta being the first range available to customers. The introduction of the Invicta range is the latest in a long line of product developments from Brett Landscaping, and is the beginning of a new generation of products that we are building capacity and capability for at our UK manufacturing centres.

Invicta Pearl

“We have also invested in developing an Invicta Flow version of the paving that is ideal for application where the effective management of surface water is a key aspect of the design brief. “While this is standard for projects such as pedestrianised areas for general public use, the Invicta block paving is also ideal on new build housing estates and domestic projects where the pooling of rain water around highways and pathways can occur.”

OUT DAMN SPOT! Excess pressure washing vibrates the surface, causing delamination, and breaks down the surface of the stone. Your valuable investment has lost its beauty and value!

THE CAUSE Patio Black Spots® are spores of black lichen, the size of pollen, that emanate from the trees. Carried on the breeze, when it rains, they are watered into the pores in your garden stonework; feeding off the various minerals in the stone, by the beginning of the 3rd Year, the spores have germinated, anchoring themselves into the surface , which is why pressure washing alone, has little effect. Most “patio cleaners” contain pesticides, or, worse, acid, which will dissolve limestone and stain sandstone orange, not to mention, having a devastating effect on surrounding plants.

THE SOLUTION THE PATIO BLACK SPOT REMOVAL SYSTEM® THE PATIO BLACK SPOT REMOVAL SYSTEM, consists of three different Removers’ for use on for Natural Stone, Artificial Stone or Brick and Block pavers Applying Patio Black Spot Preventer® , at a quarter of the cost, ensures, you never have to repeat the Removal process again!

Warmer and longer Spring and Summers periods have seen the British public embrace the great outdoors, generating the Alfresco Dining revolution of the past 12- 15 years.

For the first two years, the area maintains it pristine appearance. At the beginning of the third year, tiny, vivid, black spots begin to appear, on certain slabs, almost by stealth.

Acid free and biodegradable , it’s unique, Award Winning formulation will gently penetrate and breakdown the organic growth, completely restoring the original colour to any type and age of garden stonework, in a matter of hours, at a fraction of the cost of relaying!

Households have invested small fortunes on natural stone Patios and terraces, as the centre piece of their garden; four - course , candle lite dinners, complimented by fine wines and stilletos , have replaced the invitation for a “beer, a burger and a bun,” on a dirty patio , of the last century!

After five years, the entire area has become infested, and the Patio has become something of an eyesore!

Simply wash away the effluent, and admire!

CHOOSING THE RIGHT EXTERNAL SURFACE FOR YOUR PROJECT? Long gone are the days when your surface options were limited to concrete slabs, asphalt or grass. Add to that today’s environmental, accessible and safety considerations and the choice really is never ending! Whatever the reason for surfacing public or communal areas, car parks, footpaths, tree surrounds and swimming pool surrounds – when looking for the right external surface for your project you could start by asking the following question: •

Is there adequate drainage for the dispersal of surface water?

Will the surface remain cool in the heat?

Is it accessible for wheelchairs, bicycles etc.?

Are there any drains to consider?

Does the surface require demarcation or an element of design?

Is it easy to maintain?

How long will it last?

GftK’s PAVING JOINT MORTARS – IDEAL GROUT FOR PORCELAIN PAVING which were then susceptible to shrinkage cracking and staining themselves, they had also tried the one-part ‘brush-in resins’ that were unfortunately soon blasted out during cleaning, leaving unsightly gaps.

This new 70m2 porcelain patio was laid at the end of the normal season for external porcelain tile installations, as well as for any sunbathing and alfresco dining here in the UK. The owners wanted to ensure that from as soon as possible and throughout the next season, they could keep it sparkling clean, and prevent any dirt build-up, but without damaging and blasting out the pointing, by frequently pressure-washing their new patio to remove all types of spillages and dirt build-up. They knew this could be an issue from past bad experience using cement grouts in porcelain tiles, that were both a nightmare to clean off initially, and

As a result, the owners did extensive research to find a robust external porcelain jointing product that was suitable for installation at that time, meaning in lower temperatures and possible wet-weather, as well as being resistant to staining and that could take frequent cleaning by highpressure jet-washing. Fortunately, they found CR Services and their suppliers NCC Streetscape, who provided the solution using GftK’s vdw 815plus paving joint mortar, and in the owner’s choice of a slightly contrasting Stone-Grey colour. GftK’s vdw 815+ is a tough 2-part epoxy resin bases product, specifically designed for narrow joints from just >3mm wide, with no wet-weather limitations and this is non-staining and easily takes frequent pressure jet-wash cleaning.

www.nccstreetscape.co.uk

GftK’s VDW 850+ FOR POINTING EXTERNAL PORCELAIN & GRANITE SETTS This garden owner worked with his contractor to produce a right on-trend patio design, using the latest external porcelain tiles in combination with traditional tumbled granite setts for striking feature edging and detailing. To complete this for practical reasons, they also wanted to use the same jointing system for both materials, which then also had to be able to withstand frequent jet washing of the paved surfaces to keep the garden in tip-top condition. After some research online and then talking to NCC streetscape, they identified that GftK’s vdw 850+ was the ideal solution for both, plus at this early time of the year, they would not be restricted in trying to find a suitable weather window to complete the pointing. This is because the vdw 850+ can be applied at low

temperatures and in wet weather, which together with its speed of installation, was naturally also an attractive advantage to Fairview Drives and Design, who were to be a first-time user of this unique paving joint mortar.

64

The end result, the overall ease of application with minimal cleaning works, as well as the highly aesthetic finish were a win : win bonus for both the owner and their contractor. www.nccstreetscape.co.uk

ULTRASCAPE PREMJOINT USED AT MULTI-MILLION POUND PRIVATE RESIDENCE UltraScape premjoint jointing compound has been used to joint 65sqm of sandstone paving at a multi-million pound private residence in an exclusive residential area in Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield.

The Challenge

with granite, porcelain and other premium quality natural stone, premjoint jointing compound was the obvious choice for completing this luxury refurbishment project. Traditional jointing materials can often look patchy and discolour easily. UltraScape premjoint has been formulated using coloured quartz for its excellent shades and colour stability compared with others on the market, which rely on mixing quartz with sand. It’s this difference that really sets premjoint apart from all other brush-in jointing sands.

CITY CENTRE ‘BIOPHILIC SWANSEA’ SCHEME ‘A FIRST FOR THE UK’ An innovative mixed-use regeneration development in the heart of Swansea city centre has been hailed as a first for the UK.

68

www.landud.co.uk

The Biophilic Swansea project will transform the site of the former Woolworth store on Oxford Street, providing affordable new homes and workspace alongside a community urban farm.

The project will be delivered by Hacer Developments, with Wales’ largest provider of affordable homes, Pobl Group, joining as its residential partner.

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

The pioneering scheme is the result of extensive collaborative working among a range of local organisations, including Swansea University, the Active Building Centre, Public Health Wales, and a number of local community groups. Funding awarded through the Welsh Government Innovative Housing Programme will enable Biophilic Swansea to incorporate innovative technologies and community features, to explore a new way of inner-city housing in Wales. David Dolman, Head of Development of Hacer, said: “There is an urgent need for housing and mixed-use developments that are sustainable in terms of their environmental impact and economic viability, as a response to the climate emergency and to

ensure greater resilience and wellbeing for urban communities. “Thanks to the support of Welsh Government’s Innovative Housing Programme and the approach of the local authority, this project will incorporate innovative technologies and community features to illustrate a new way of urban living across Swansea city centre and beyond. “Launching the biophilic model here requires a huge collaborative effort. But the work of our project teams, designers, stakeholders and legal teams already demonstrates that Wales can lead the way in revolutionising how we design our living and working environments.” The project will feature two south facing greenhouses at roof level, the largest of which will be serviced by an aquaponics system designed to produce up to 4.5 tonnes of fruits, vegetables, salads and herbs per year. The aquaponics system will create a continuous cycle where waste produced by fish, living in onsite tanks, adds nutrients to the water which feeds the greenhouse plants. The water is then filtered and recirculated back into the system. Biophilic Swansea’s aquaponic fish tanks and associated equipment will be developed in partnership with Swansea University’s Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Research (CSAR) and will form part of an education and public display on the ground floor of the tower.

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE Andrew Vye, Managing Director Pobl Homes & Communities, commented: “Pobl has a growing reputation for delivering forward thinking housing solutions that push the boundaries. We are excited to be working with Hacer on such an innovative project that will deliver much needed high-quality homes for Swansea and support the council’s wider regeneration plans for the city centre. “Hacer have shown a real passion and commitment to deliver this project and the support from the Council and Welsh Government has been critically important.” Pobl has recently exceeded its target of creating 3,000 much needed new homes in the five years to 2021 and has recently outlined its ambitions for the new decade that includes investing in a further 10,000 new homes by 2030.

The vision for Biophilic Swansea includes residents running and managing the urban farm as a social enterprise. This is founded on research demonstrating that reconnecting with nature is essential to our well-being, and that there are positive community and health outcomes from growing food and living more closely with the natural world. The project is a mixed-use development that includes affordable and shared ownership housing, as well as retail and low carbon commercial office space. High quality inner-city apartments will be attractive to families, professionals and older people, balancing the recent trend for student housing with a more varied mix of accommodation. The existing building, formerly Woolworth, will be redeveloped with new floors added above and a new build tower element to the rear. This will open into a new multi-use public realm, which will become a vibrant public and cultural space and a destination for events and street markets. The public realm effectively links the Biophilic Swansea project with the new Council led development at 71-72 The Kingsway on the site of the former Oceana nightclub, which will provide high tech workspace.

70

www.landud.co.uk

Swansea Council leader Rob Stewart said: “This development is an impressive innovative concept and another landmark development for our city.

Pobl is a not-for-profit organisation that has over 17,600 homes under its management across Wales. The Group currently has 36 developments ongoing with the construction of over 1,200 new homes in progress with many more in the pipeline. In Swansea, Pobl’s development of 52 apartments in Orchard House has recently completed, while work continues on 33 affordable apartments as part of Phase One of the Copr Bay regeneration project. Work is also about to commence on a collaborative project with Coastal Housing to develop a new community of 144 zero carbon homes to the west of the city.

“This demonstrates the confidence in the ongoing regeneration of Swansea from the private sector and a commitment to our regeneration, restoration and repurposing agenda. It a great example of partnership working, and I’m grateful to the Welsh Government for the funding it has provided to make this happen. “In future more people will live, work, and enjoy spending time in our greener, more people-friendly city centre – so the lifestyle, wellbeing, quality standards and greening principles of the Biophilic Living development reflect what the council is committed to creating.”

ABG’S BLUE ROOF DRAINAGE SYSTEM For urban developments with limited space or strict flood risk reduction planning conditions, installing a blue roof system within podium and roof-top areas is an increasingly popular solution. Blue roofs control rainwater at source and maximise the development’s available SuDS footprint, avoiding the need to excavate underground storage tanks that in city centre locations will typically involve difficult access and be expensive to install from a financial and carbon output point of view.

ABG blueroof system installed beneath PV panels at the Lily’s Walk development, High Wycombe

Blue roof drainage systems are also endorsed as the most effective SuDS technique available to local authority planners within ‘The SuDS Manual’ guidance, as published by CIRIA. By installing blue roof restrictor chamber and void former systems within podium deck and roof constructions, the volume of storm water that is released into rainwater outlets is controlled and the site’s maximum permitted discharge rate (as designated in the planning conditions) is not exceeded during storm events with periods of prolonged and intense rainfall.

or Flood Studies Report data for the site’s location), plus an additional 40% allowance for the effects of climate change typically detailed. Blue roofs are suitable for a variety of surface finishes; including extensive and biodiverse green roofs, paved and decking areas and for final usage applications

The blue roof system’s attenuation capacity is calculated to accommodate a 1:100 year storm duration event (as published in Flood Estimation Handbook

such as beneath podium amenity and trafficked areas, MUGAs and M&E plant and PV panel locations. When combined with a green roof surface finish (extensive or biodiverse), blue roofs make an important environmental contribution; including helping to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and reducing the urban heat island effect, filtration of rainwater pollutants, absorbing low frequency sounds and promoting new wildlife ecosystems and biodiversity.

ABG blueroof - Taking rainwater by storm ABG’s blueroof system attenuates and controls rainwater discharge at roof level, forming an integral element within the SuDS design on many modern developments – especially on tight urban sites.

The system’s restrictor chambers enable rainfall from storm events to be discharged at a controlled rate, to help meet the site’s SuDS planning requirements. Blue roof systems also appear at the top of ‘the SuDS hierarchy’ guidance for many planning bodies in the UK. ABG blueroof can be combined with multiple surface finishes and final area uses at both podium and roof level - including green roofs & biodiverse roofs, amenity terraces, plant areas and trafficked podium areas. ABG are a leading UK manufacturer, supplier and installer, and can provide a PI-insured design service based upon over 30 years of drainage and installation experience for sustainable green/blue infrastructure projects.

QUINTAIN LIVING CHAMPIONS THE IMPORTANCE OF URBAN GREEN SPACE Access to outdoor space has never been so important. Even before the pandemic, research from the European Centre for Environment and Human Health had shown that living in an urban area with green spaces has a long-lasting, positive impact on mental well-being and that outdoor exercise leads to an estimated £2.2bn of health benefits for adults in England every year, according to the University of Exeter.

Montana and Dakota buildings boast an acre of private residential gardens, while its Alto apartments include a private mezzanine terrace with lawns and water features. The crowning jewel in terms of urban green space is Quintain Living’s Canada Gardens. The stylish, contemporary homes are nestled within an acre of private resident gardens, with abundant greenery on offer in the heart of this vibrant urban setting.

“Safe, open, green space was our focus right from the outset at Canada Gardens. We’ve created an oasis of calm within an urban setting, providing residents with the space to connect with nature and allow children to play, while on the doorstep of the incredible wealth of shops, restaurants, cultural and leisure pursuits available in Wembley Park.” Danielle Bayless, Chief Operating Officer, Quintain Living

Now, as we look forward to coming out lockdown, green space has never been more sought after. Yet one in eight households in Great Britain – and one in five in London – has no access to a garden, either private or shared, according to the Office for National Statistics. Thankfully, this is something that newly built homes are increasingly seeking to address. In Wembley Park, award-winning management company Quintain Living, which oversees the rental of more than 2,500 apartments, is championing the importance of green spaces in urban settings. The company’s

which is already available to enjoy, with outdoor exercise equipment and water features.

The proactive approach to social space at Canada Gardens means that residents have access to hireable allotments, designer workfrom-home garden sheds and a pirate ship themed children’s play area and water feature. The one-acre private podium garden is awash with garden-party design features like outdoor kitchen entertainment spaces and BBQs as well as a children’s play hut.

There’s even a pet park for those who rent with their furry friends, as well as an enormous roof terrace providing incredible 360° views of the City, the Chilterns and the iconic Wembley Stadium arch. In addition to the extensive outdoor space already available, Canada Gardens residents are set to benefit from a seven-acre park that will be opening this year - a portion of

“The commitment to greenery is in evidence across the whole of Wembley Park. The 7-acre park will be a wonderful addition to the local neighbourhood and outside space forms an important part of each building that we design. We’ve even ensured that the boulevards across the wider site are lined with trees, a planting strategy that Quintain has won awards for, so that residents can enjoy greenery with their morning coffee or walk to work.” Danielle Bayless, Chief Operating Officer, Quintain Living

This last point – the inclusion of an abundance of trees along the boulevards that crisscross Wembley Park – is one that is now being embraced more widely across the country. Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick has proposed that all new streets be lined with trees, as part of new plans to create more attractive neighbourhoods that enhance biodiversity and improve access to nature. The proposals have won the backing of 22 local areas so far and support the government’s commitment to plant 30 million trees by 2025.

“We are committed to a diverse and sustainable neighbourhood for our residents to enjoy and the planting strategy we have across our developments, and wider Wembley Park, is a key part of this.” Danielle Bayless, Chief Operating Officer, Quintain Living.

CIS POROUS RESIN BOUND AND SLOT DRAIN TREE GRILLES

Trees are an important part of our natural life support system; they have a vital role to play in the sustainability of our towns and cities and we need to take better care of them, both now and in the future, yet we see them starved of natural food and water and damaged at their roots by earthworks, particularly in developed areas of towns and car parks.

As a result of the built environment soil compaction can inhibit or prevent natural root growth. CIS Slot Drain and Resin bound grilles are a great way of enhancing the sustainability of your project for future generations. Clients can use either resin or porous paving in any of these tree surrounds.

CONCRETE BLOCK PERMEABLE PAVING FOR LIFE AND FOR TREES Recent trials of various, older concrete block permeable paving projects following long-term use back-up previous research, endorse current minimal maintenance recommendations and debunk misconceptions about clogging up of joints. This research has important implications for the whole life costs of permeable paving generally. One of the projects involved also reveals major benefits of permeable paving opening up new opportunities for green infrastructure, particularly trees.

78

www.landud.co.uk

Concrete Block Permeable Paving (CBPP) technology has proven itself over successful use around the world since the mid-1980s. Two decades of experience in the UK has demonstrated its longterm performance with minimal, if any, maintenance. But one of the most persistent misconceptions about CBPP technology, impeding its uptake and adoption, is that – without maintenance – the joints quickly become clogged with debris and, within a short time, become impermeable preventing water from draining into the paving.

Permeable Paving in Practice In fact, over time detritus and silt collects in the upper part of CBPP joint material between blocks, where a surface ‘crust’ (around 5-10mm deep) is formed, protecting the laying course and sub-base material but still allowing infiltration. Also, the performance of CBPP is not significantly affected by moss or weeds in the joints, or by leaves collecting on the surface. Even where localised blockages do occur, in a storm event excess water simply flows to more permeable, adjacent areas. Follow us @ludmagazine

LANDSCAPING SERVICES Previous research has demonstrated that the infiltration rate of CBPP will decrease due to this build-up in the jointing material, but then stabilise with age. Even after allowing for clogging, the long-term infiltration capability of permeable pavements (shown red in the graph) will normally substantially exceed UK hydrological requirements (shown blue).

Latest Research In order to better understand the effect trafficking, weathering and time have on CBPP systems, field tests have recently been undertaken by an Interpave member on three projects installed 6-, 17- and 19-years ago, respectively. To measure the permeability of these existing CBPP pavements, the trials used the American Standard ASTMC1781/ C1781M method.

Case Study and Video

For context, the heaviest UK rainfall event in history was 92mm per hour. The video also includes an illuminating interview with the original project designer about longterm performance and maintenance, and also the benefits of CBPP for trees. Constructed in 2003, this large out-of-town car park receives regular daily trafficking from commuters and shoppers. With around 500 car spaces, the 13,000 m2 of concrete block permeable paving has delivered problem-free performance over 17 years.

One of the projects considered – Martlesham Park and Ride, Suffolk – is the subject of a video showing the trials. In this test 10 litres of water in a sealed tube created a head of about 140 millimetres – equivalent to more than a month of heavy rainfall. Here, the surface absorbed the 10 litres of water in 8 minutes and 1 second, equivalent to a rainfall intensity of 1,055mm per hour.

The grit-filled joints do have moss in them but, as a porous substance itself, water passes through without problems. The site is surrounded by vegetation, with some tall trees and well-established shrubs. Maintenance has effectively been cosmetic – occasionally sweeping tree debris and vegetation from the surface after storms and leaf fall in the autumn.

The research demonstrates that all the CBPP sites tested, despite receiving no specific maintenance to improve permeability, still provide infiltration rates that would cope with any likely UK rainfall event.

Permeable Paving and Green Infrastructure Extensive mature trees around and within the site were simply retained as part of the scheme. The CBPP removes pollutants from water passing through, providing treated water sustenance for trees. The roots have continued to grow within the permeable pavement sub-base but – importantly – there have been no visible signs of block rutting or lifting, or roots coming through the surface. As CBPP allows the same pattern of run-off transfer to the ground as natural vegetation, it allows water to reach tree and shrub roots, despite providing a hard surface above. This is endorsed by the current Code of Practice for accessibility in the external environment, BS 83001:2018, which states that: ‘Tree grilles should be avoided. Smooth or paved permeable surfaces should be used wherever practicable’. Concrete block permeable paving technology will, in future, play a key role in introducing and retaining trees, and other green infrastructure, within our towns and cities. In addition to new permeable pavements for developments, CBPP overlays to existing, conventional road bases can be used in conjunction with raingardens or bioretention areas to store water for irrigation while improving the public realm.

Interpave Information Resource A full report on this research and project video – as well as more information, detailed guidance and case studies on concrete block permeable paving – are available from the Interpave website.

LANDSCAPING SERVICES Hartley Botanic is a historic English business, specialising in luxury, bespoke and handmade aluminium Glasshouses and Greenhouses. Operating from the same factory in Greenfield, Lancashire since 1938, the company has earned an unrivalled reputation for crafting ‘the finest Glasshouses and Greenhouses money can buy.’ The business has been selling its Glasshouses and Greenhouses internationally for over 20 years and has enjoyed a strong following for a number of years in the US, Germany and Scandinavia, but in the last three years, its global trade has built significantly. Since 2017, international sales have grown 144 percent, transforming the company’s strongest markets. A Hartley Botanic bespoke, handmade Victorian Lodge Glasshouse in Washington, US Its exponential international growth has meant the UK has now been replaced by the US as Hartley Botanic’s dominant market, as American customers fall for both the businesses’ quintessentially Englishlooking Victorian Glasshouses and its contemporary Modern Horticulture range which has proved particularly popular in the state of California. The next strongest markets for the business are now Germany, Italy, Ireland and Portugal. The company has also broken into completely new international markets, namely Italy, Norway, Slovakia and Estonia. Hartley Botanic wins the Queen’s Award for International Trade for Outstanding Short Term Growth in overseas sales over three years. Martin Toogood, Chairman of Hartley Botanic said; “From our historic factory, tucked away at the base of Lancashire’s dramatic Pennines’ Chew Valley, our Glasshouses are handmade by a local team ready to be shipped across the globe. We couldn’t be more proud of the fact that our Glasshouses and Greenhouses are now being enjoyed by gardeners worldwide, and are thrilled to receive such a prestigious business accolade. For many, Glasshouses are intrinsically linked to a romantic, comforting notion of Englishness and our 83 year old business, with its incomparable range and commitment to traditional Follow us @ludmagazine

craftsmanship, is perfectly placed to deliver this.” Founded by brothers Vincent (RHS fellow) and Norman Hartley, the company was (to its knowledge) the first to develop and make entirely aluminium Greenhouse structures, marking a huge improvement on its wood and wrought iron Victorian forerunners. Since then, Hartley Botanic has built a name and reputation amongst the horticultural elite synonymous with excellence, thanks to its incomparable range, its structurally superior Greenhouses which ‘last a lifetime’ and its exceptional service delivery. NIP BUGS IN THE BUD AS TREES BURST INTO LIFE A host of bugs usually appear in April to prey on trees and shrubs but the recent cold snap early in the month may have proved a stay of execution for some species. “The dip in temperatures most likely pushed things back a little,” says Dr Jon Banks, Research Lab Manager at Bartlett Tree Experts, “but plenty of undesirable things will be coming out very soon.” Our treasured conker trees grow fearful this time of year of what may be about to hit them – the horse chestnut leaf miner. These tiny moths emerge from leaf litter just as horse chestnuts burst into leaf, feeding off the fresh green foliage to leave unsightly trails and brown, crinkly remains.

90

www.landud.co.uk

The trees can even drop their foliage mid-season, giving up the ghost for the year in the hope of a better climate next time round.

Leaf miner, and another blight affecting the same species – horse chestnut bleeding canker - spread alarm across the UK when they first struck some 15 years ago but things are improving, Dr Banks notes. Follow us @ludmagazine

LANDSCAPING SERVICES

While leaf miner is endemic now, arborists, landscapers and grounds managers are finding ways to combat the condition, he says. “The moths typically emerge just after the tree’s leaves have expanded. Disposing of leaf litter can help reduce or prevent outbreaks and while no licence is currently available specifically for treating horse chestnut leaf miner, spraying with a broad-spectrum systemic insecticide, such as synthetic pyrethroid (trade names include Decis and Bandu) designed for amenity trees, is proven to be effective,” he explains. “Tightly focusing the spray using a lance targets the treatment liquids where they are most needed,” he says. “Ideally, apply the liquid until just before run-off occurs as that ensures maximum adhesion to leaves.” Turning his attention to larger specimens, Dr Banks adds that Bartlett Tree Experts have developed tailored management services, using spray equipment designed to safely deliver plant protection products efficiently and effectively to the canopy. “Leaf miners have three generations during the summer so follow-up spraying is critical, he states. “Two treatments usually are applied. The first, in April or May, lasts three to four weeks, then it’s time for the second application. However, a third spray will provide better coverage for the full season.”

Follow us @ludmagazine

Lance spraying also delivers ecological benefits, Dr Banks believes. “We’re not just spraying for our own sakes. Losing leaves midseason deprives wildlife of habitat and the less spray that falls where it is not needed or where it may cause harm, such as any nearby water, the better.” Spring is a time when clients realise their trees are not in full health, or are dead and yell for advice, he says. “It’s a good time to look at trees as often we can see branch structure very well but also gain an idea of what’s coming into leaf, depending on the species.”

The good news about horse chestnut bleeding canker, which is caused by the pseudomonas bacteria, is that more trees may be tolerating the disease due to system induced resistance, he adds – because wholesale loss of our conker trees would deprive new generations of children of a favourite pastime.

EUROFLOR GOES NATIVE! Euroflor Flora Britannica A species rich mix recommend for rural roadsides, nature reserves, ecological conservation schemes, riverside edges, on agricultural set-aside land and natural areas of parkland. An adaptable mixture with a plant base common to many habitats throughout the UK for creating natural, rich flower meadows

Euroflor Native Pollinator A rich mix of perennials, biennials and self-seeding annuals providing abundant nectar and pollen, widely adaptable to a range of soil types, a more discreet flowering display for environmentally sensitive sites in either full sun or partial shade

Flora Britannica

UK native & naturalised flowering plant species are highly valued for creating and restoring wildlife habitats, providing food, shelter and flowering vistas where horticultural varieties might otherwise look out of place. Over Millenia a great diversity of flowering species colonised our shores, spontaneously growing across diverged eco-systems, from ancient wild undisturbed habitats, through to modern urban landscapes. Consequences of decades of intensive land management, has heightened awareness in the decline of pollinating insect populations. Independent collaborative research by the Urban Pollinators Group (UPG) at Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds & Reading universities explored the complex ecological demands of diverse pollinator groups throughout their life-cycle. Euroflor 100% flower seed mixes are a direct outcome of that research, supplying a longer seasonal supply of nectar and pollen and creating valuable habitats for a myriad of insects and the eco-systems they support. The following mixes all contain 100% native and naturalised flora for enriching the environment of amenity settings such as parkland, public gardens, country estates, golf courses, road and riverside verges and allotments.

Euroflor Poppies 100% Field (or Common) Poppies (Papaver rhoeas) of high purity and germination Native Pollinators

Euroflor Alliance a combination of red Field (or Common) Poppies (Papaver rhoeas) and Cornflowers (Centaurea cyanus) which are mainly blue but also shades of pink and white.

Euroflor Boulevard a low flowering height of 10-30cm, predominantly perennial mix with 20 species including harebell and cowslip, eliminates the need for roadside verge cutting, reducing maintenance costs whilst promoting roadside biodiversity, perfect for road and riverside verges and alongside driveways

Euroflor Cornfield Annuals A classic cornfield composition including Poppy, Corn Marigold, Corncockle, Chamomile and Nodding Catchfly for added interest, this mix is reminiscent of traditional farmland flower meadows that support the bountiful wildlife in our countryside

Euroflor is generally sown at 3g/m2 and up to 5g per m2 on sloping sites and can be undertaken for spring sowing up to the end of June. Annual seed mixes in general have a higher visual impact than perennial mixes and are easier to establish. After sowing the soil should not be allowed to dry out for 2-3 weeks giving time for all species to germinate. Once the plants are growing little maintenance required; irrigate only if wilting stress is observed, and a little spot weeding as necessary. The UK climate being what it is may mean no supplementary watering is needed at all! The entire range of Euroflor mixes for either spring and/or autumn sowing is available individually in 1kg packs, covering approximately 300-350 square metres, or explore a wider range of mixes with your personally selected Discovery Box. Each box contains 10 x 50g packs with each 50g pack covering approximately 16 square metres.

Euroflor Cornflowers 100% Cornflowers (Centaurea cyanus) which are mainly blue but also shades of pink and white.

LIGHTING

ILLUMINATE TO APPRECIATE:

DECKING, PERGOLAS & BEYOND

in, but glare can have the opposite effect. Anti-glare keeps everyone and everything safer, ensuring light is spread evenly in the relevant direction. Anti-glare lighting effects look great too.

4) Install lights built from durable materials Enjoyment of outdoor spaces has proved so important over the last year; an activity set to continue this year. Spring and Summer always drives a passion to spend more time outside making garden improvements, often with help from landscape professionals for the best results. In 2021, availability of high-end outdoor living products has increased to match strong demand; outdoor lighting is no exception. Lighting design quality and innovation are at an all-time high, with improvements in sustainability, technology, durability and function. Garden lighting can completely transform a space, with the most popular seasonal lighting applications being wooden outdoor structures, decking, pergolas, steps, walls and planters. Make the most of your space with the following checklist.

1) Plan ahead Lighting should be considered early within a project to make installation

94

www.landud.co.uk

as straightforward as possible and to gauge best position and quantity of lights. Power supply is an important consideration, varying between 12v, mains 240v and solar, all of which have their own benefits.

2) Use 12v low voltage lights & LED lights where possible There’s so many benefits to using 12v lights instead of mains power. Once an outdoor socket is in place, 12v transformers simply plug into the socket, and lights will ‘plug and play’ into place after that. Easy, safe installation, suited to damp conditions. LED lighting is highly efficient and has become an industry standard across many types of lighting. For a full list of benefits and more information visit www.lumenalights.com

3) Choose ‘Anti-Glare’ for less light pollution and a naturefriendly environment Anti-glare design is an important aspect of a light fitting. As well as protecting our wildlife, anti-glare light also protects us. A light should create a safe area to move around

Sourcing the right materials results in keeping good quality lights for longer. Select materials to suit your environment, physically and visually. Brass or copper lights are naturally durable and look elegant, lasting for years with little maintenance. Copper will darken to blend in with rustic natural surroundings. Marine grade stainless steel and anodised aluminium lights are smart contemporary choices and highly weatherproof.

5) Consider Solar for a low carbon footprint: zero emissions, zero running costs & renewable energy Lumena have revolutionised solar lighting in the UK with the Pro Solar range. These high quality, bright solar lights have guarantees of up to 5 years and work well in UK weather. They have impressive outputs, illumination times and charging capacity. Long life LEDs, panels and batteries are used, for 365 day illumination.

on the importance of maximising outside space, the importance of correctly specifying the appropriate product has never been more significant. A far cry from massproduced, “off-the-shelf” products, the Fordingbridge canopy offering instead efficiently combines standard components and sections to provide a bespoke, structurally engineered solution fit for any environment.

Follow us @ludmagazine

“Handling the complete process in-house has a multitude of benefits for the many practices we collaborate with,” explains Stephen Toone, Managing Director of the firm. “We work with them from the outset to ensure the brief is met and that a cost effective, inspiring and structurally sound product is the end result. As our design and manufacture process is internal, we can tweak designs throughout the planning stage, and provide the necessary input early in the process to ensure our element of the wider project is a success. This is especially true within our work in education and healthcare,” Toone continues, “where the importance of collaborating with a Principal Contractor and providing the necessary information from the outset can have a huge positive bearing on the project as a whole, especially when often working to a tight programme.”

With a renewed emphasis on the importance of correctly utilising outside space as a result of the pandemic, a canopy can immediately elevate a courtyard, concourse or walkway to create a weather protected area which will hold a multiple of benefits for its’ users. The Fordingbridge offering is a solid one, offering total collaboration to ensure that your next project is success that will serve your clients needs for many years.
