GARDEN FURNITURE

USING FURNITURE IN GARDEN DESIGN At Oxenwood, design and quality are key. Its bespoke furniture is at home both in the garden and as part of an interior scheme and the company has a flair for creating great entertaining spaces with its stunning pieces. The furniture is made to order with premium natural materials including oak and Belgian bluestone, using traditional craftsmanship techniques. Oxenwood discuss using furniture in design with Bradley Burgess, who knows a thing or two about designing both indoor and outdoor spaces! Bradley Burgess formed his design company A V Design, after having worked in the property and design industries for over 16 years.

4

www.landud.co.uk

A V Design shares Oxenwood’s passion for quality and timeless style, as well as a talent for maximising entertaining space by making the most of exterior areas.

Why do you think gardens and outdoor spaces are so important? Human beings inherently need a place to belong and to feel a sense of ease. Studies have shown that gardens enhance both our mental and physical wellbeing, so keeping this in mind, we always design gardens and interiors which create a sense of place. A well-designed garden should be a fusion of purpose, style and function.

Why is it so important that gardens and interiors work together? Gardens can be a seamless extension of the indoor living space if design is considered and both work in harmony. Ideally, a garden should reflect the interior and vice versa.

How do you utilise garden furniture in your designs? Creating areas in which to lounge, entertain or enjoy some solitude is critical to any garden or outdoor space. Furniture helps to create the stage and backdrop for various activities that might take place throughout the day.

GARDEN FURNITURE

The development of a variety of outdoor furniture styles is exciting as allows us to evoke a certain mood, style and feel.

What role do you think furniture plays in the home and garden? When choosing pieces of furniture, we look at how they lend themselves to the ergonomics of the intended purpose. Oxenwood’s furniture certainly lends itself to relaxing and socialising! The oversized tables especially, are just calling out for a lazy afternoon barbecue with lots of friends.

What stands out most about Oxenwood’s creations for you?

What’s your favourite Oxenwood piece and why?

The style of the pieces has something very ‘Soho House’ about it and clients are always looking for that boutique hotel look. The AV Design team absolutely love the versatility of each piece, the earthy materials used, the architectural styling of each design and how each piece has an element of sculpture. The pieces are also very versatile and can be used in both contemporary and classic spaces to great effect. The furniture creates a real sense of place, which is always something we are looking to create in a garden.

This is a tough one! Both the Aubrey and the Harry tables make such a statement. They instantly transport you to a glamourous destination where you can envisage yourself enjoying a sumptuous al fresco meal surrounded by people you love, with wines on ice. These are tables where memories are created.

HOW TO CREATE AN ECO-FRIENDLY GARDEN Whether you’re looking to improve the sustainability of your garden or wanting to start living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, creating an eco-friendly garden is a good place to begin. We’ve curated this simple guide featuring just a few of the different ways you can help make your garden more eco-friendly today.

Plastic Decking Using plastic decking in your garden instead of wooden decking has many benefits. Dermot Walch, MD of Kedel says ‘First of all, plastic decking has a very low carbon footprint. Using recycled plastic keeps a wide variety of plastic out of landfills, and turns it into a product with both ecological and financial benefits. Secondly, it requires no maintenance and is impervious to moisture, mould and insects. Wooden decking regularly needs treating and replacing after a short while of use, while plastic decking will never rot, wear away or splinter. Cleaning of plastic decking is easy, and looks good for a lifetime.’ While it may be pricier at the beginning, wooden decking will save you a lot of money, time and effort in the long run.

Solar powered lights Decorating and lighting your garden with solar powered lights reduces the need for electricity to be wired into your garden, making them easy to place anywhere you’d like. While battery powered lights are an option too, you’ll find you’ll need to replace these batteries pretty frequently if the lights are going to be on all night, which is why solar powered lights are both better environmentally and financially.

8

www.landud.co.uk

Water Collecting Installing a water butt of your choice on a downpipe allows you to collect rainwater for use in the garden instead of using water from a tap. The absence of many chemicals found in tap water makes rainwater a very good option for watering plants, and can highly reduce your utility bills, especially in the summer months.

Growing your own fruit and vegetables Growing your own fruit and vegetables in the garden diminishes the need for food transportation and delivery systems that create harmful emissions. Opting for recycled plastic growing beds are a good way to incorporate some recycled materials into your garden, and will never rot, making them reliable and sustainable. You can also choose to make your own compost in the garden, which

will help repurpose kitchen and garden waste into compost you can use to help make your garden grow.

Increase wildlife Increasing wildlife in your garden, such as increasing the amount of bees and birds you see is a good way to turn your garden into a helpful eco-system for wildlife. Flowers that attract bees due to their pollen and nectar include the likes of honeysuckles, bluebells, primroses and foxgloves, while installing bird boxes and birdfeeders is a good way to invite a variety of different birds to your garden. This new eco-system will work in your favour, with birds eating worms and caterpillars that could damage plants and flowers, diminishing the need for excessive pesticide use.

LATHAMS, HELPING LANDSCAPE DESIGNERS

BRING IDEAS TO LIFE First importing timber into Liverpool in 1757, James Latham have always been seen as innovators, and that’s as true today as it’s ever been. With a number of surprising product ranges for landscapers, this spirit of innovation continues. With their heart still in sustainably sourced timber and panels, and a solid market in railway sleepers, treated timber and other, more commonplace landscaper’s favourites, the business has embraced the arrival of modified timber products such as Accoya® wood and MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME® MDF. Both of these products have been treated via a natural process called acetylation, enabling the manufacturer to offer a warranty of 50 years when used outdoors (and even 25 years when in contact with the ground!). Other products such as Garnica Duraply offer a new take on external plywood, boasting warranties of up to 15 years. Modified products such as these are perfect when decking and cladding or when planters or structures are required in landscape

schemes, providing endless opportunities for creative solutions that were never feasible before. When it comes to surprising with sought-after finishes, Lathams have also stolen another innovative march, having been appoint a main distributor for the widely coveted Shou Sugi Ban range of charred timber cladding and panels. The aesthetics of these strikingly attractive products have been widely celebrated in our sector, but the source of the products is little known. The ancient Japanese art of charring timber isn’t just about aesthetics though. The process allows the timber to release resins that shed water and prolong the life of the substrate. When applied to the modified timbers discussed previously, the effect and longevity is simply stunning. All of these, however advanced, still fit quite comfortably into most people’s perceptions of Lathams as a high quality, forward thinking timber supplier. The real surprise comes when you start to look into the decorative solid surfaces the business has embraced in recent years.

Providing a new direction for the company and a whole new option for garden furniture, outdoor kitchens and more, thermoformable, stain resistant products such as LG HI-MACS® natural acrylic stone and the Aristech Avonite® and STUDIO® collections, provide a wide-range of finishes and textures. Ranging from masonry effects such as concrete, marble and stone, through to translucent, metallic and geometric patterns, all look spectacular on their own or even better when lit from within at night; the cool feel and smooth, polished appearance making for a beautiful, tactile finish that is crying out for creativity and experimentation.

WOOD GREEN’S ADVICE FOR CREATING A PETFRIENDLY GARDEN This year, more than ever, our gardens have been our own personal havens – keeping us in touch with nature and giving us space to relax, exercise, spend time with our family and nurture our favourite plants. We make the garden an enjoyable place for the people at home, but what about our pets? Wood Green, The Animals Charity shares advice for creating a pet-friendly garden, whether you have dogs, cats or small pets like rabbits and guinea pigs.

16

www.landud.co.uk

DOGS Dogs love gardens – and most of all, they like to be in the garden with you! Your outdoor space, however big or small, can be used for a variety of games and activities. • Grassy areas are ideal for scattering food, retrieving toys and games of tug. Try to avoid gravel, as the stones are hard on paws and can get very hot in summer.

• Hiding a dog’s favourite toy or treats around the garden such as behind pots, under bushes and in long grass will help dogs to use their nose and brain. • For adult dogs, setting up low jumps in the garden can be great fun – and it’s easy with just two plant pots with a broom over them. Can you teach your dog to retrieve a toy over a jump?

Follow us @ludmagazine

GARDEN DESIGN

• For dogs who love digging, adding a sandpit gives them space to have fun without destroying the flowerbed. Make sure you stay with them and teach them the rules. • Practise training – such as sit, stay, leave and recall – in your garden. The outdoor sights, scents and sounds can be a distraction, but will help to achieve the same good behaviour whilst out in public. • Some plants can be poisonous to dogs, so particular care needs to be taken when puppies and young dogs are exploring their environment as they are inclined to taste and chew nearly everything they come across. For further details on toxic plants, please visit Wood Green’s website.

CATS Providing outdoor access will allow your cat to express their natural behaviours. These simple tips will help you to create a wonderful environment for them to enjoy all year round. • Place pots or shrubs directly outside the door or cat flap. Cats like to have a bolthole nearby so if they see or hear something that worries them, they can run for cover.

Follow us @ludmagazine

• Cats generally feel safer when surveying their territory from up high. Provide your cat with logs, posts and perching platforms, or trees with open growth, to offer climbing and scratching opportunities. Your cat will use these to condition their claws, exercise and mark their territory. • Cats love to sunbathe, so make sure they have some sunspots to relax in. By also giving them places to hide, your cat will have the option to seek shelter from the rain or midday sun. • Consider your choice of plants. Catnip, catmint and cat grass will keep cats entertained, as well as

plants like Buddleia that attract butterflies and other insects that cats can watch and chase. • To encourage your cat to toilet outside, create a designated area with loose non-toxic sand. Ideally, it should be partially sheltered to make it appealing to use in all weathers. • If you typically prefer to keep your cat indoors, could you build an enclosed garden or ‘catio’? Cats love being outside so this will allow them to express their natural behaviours, whilst offering you peace of mind. Stepby-step guidance is available on Wood Green’s website.

GARDEN DESIGN

SMALL ANIMALS Many small pets live outdoors, so owners will already have petproofed their garden. Did you know you can also grow a number of things to feed them with, or use garden materials to create feeders and toys? • 10% of rabbits’ and guinea pigs’ diets should be made up of plants like herbs, fruits and vegetables, along with 85% being made up of hay or grass. Many can be grown at home – but not all of them are recommended. Full feeding

guides are available on Wood Green’s website. • For example, blackberry bramble leaves are superb for keeping small pets’ digestive systems healthy. For guinea pigs, pick and scatter the leaves. Rabbits enjoy a whole strip of bramble, including the thorns. • To provide enrichment for small pet runs, consider tunnels, cardboard boxes, trays filled with soil or play sand, and/or large willow or apple tree logs.

• Old plastic plant pots can also be reused, and stuffed with hay and freshly picked forage, for rabbits and guinea pigs to browse. • If you’d like to offer a spacious and enriched environment for small pets that also looks nice, you could build your own into the available landscape – such as upcycling a shed, or building rabbit mounds and burrows.

For further advice about creating a pet-friendly garden, or for free advice and support about any other aspect of pet care, please go to woodgreen.org.uk. In the past year Wood Green, The Animals Charity has helped around 7,000 pets in need, from urgent veterinary treatment and rehabilitation through to behavioural training and support for pet owners on all aspects of pet care. This wouldn’t be possible without kind donations from members of the public. You can donate to this worthy cause by visiting woodgreen.org.uk.

TILE MAINTENANCE ADVICE

BY LEIGH PRICE, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF REAL STONE AND TILE Leigh Price, managing director of Real Stone and Tile gives an expert insight into the cleaning and maintenance of flooring. With tiles in any environment, cleaning and ongoing maintenance to them is paramount to ensure you keep a fresh appearance to the flooring and allow the home owner to prolong the life of their investment.

Identification The key consideration before any cleaning or maintenance is the identification of the surface type which is crucial to ensuring that the correct treatment is received.

20

www.landud.co.uk

Whether the tiles are ceramic, natural stone, porcelain or slate etc the cleaning and maintenance needs to be slightly adapted to suit. For example, limestone alone varies greatly in porosity dependent on age, shape and size, therefore the absorbency of any natural stone surface will need to be established. This can be tested simply by placing a teaspoon of water on a clean, completely dry tile and timing how long the water takes to be absorbed. If the water is absorbed into the tile within the five minutes, the level of porosity is high. An absorbency time within fifteen minutes indicates a medium porosity and water taking within one hour or longer to be absorbed shows a low level of porosity.

Sealing When considering the amount of traffic passing over the flooring, it is necessary that the area is protected using a suitable sealant to reduce the risk of any damage and to also help towards the ease of maintenance. However, before a sealing product can be used it is vital that the surface is free from any dirt or grime and is completely dry. Failure to correctly prepare the flooring can result in the effectiveness of the sealant being compromised. The variety of sealants on the market is large, whether you want to leave a glossy finish, matte finish or enhance the colour of the flooring Follow us @ludmagazine

LANDSCAPE SERVICES There are a large range of products available on the market to tackle a range of problems such as mould and mildew, lime based stains and grease; it is recommended that specialist advice is sought to ensure that the product is suitable for the surface.

there are products to suit, whichever you choose it is imperative to make sure that the tiles are correctly preserved with the right application. The type of sealant and the amount of this used is all dependent on the surface type that you are protecting. The tiles level of porosity can help to establish how many coats of sealant need to be applied to ensure that a suitable defence is being provided. A low level of porosity would typically require 1 to 2 coats of sealer, medium porosity requiring 2 to 3 coats and finally a high level of porosity would need 3 to 4 coats of sealer. In most cases, tiles would be sealed in two stages; however both stages are also able to be carried out alone if suitable for the material of the tile. The first stage is to protect the surface by using an impregnating sealant; the purpose of this is to fill the little pores in the tile which then reduces the level absorbency. Following on from this a surface sealer can then be used to act as an additional seal that can reduce the risk of staining by preventing the surface from being penetrated.

Cleaning A floor seal doesn’t last forever and that’s when intense cleaning is required to prepare the floor for initial and further protection. Sweeping over the floor with a brush is a simple yet effective way to remove the main bulk of surface dirt, but specialist products would be required to remove more stubborn blemishes or marks. Follow us @ludmagazine

The moisture absorbing nature of grout means that it is subjective to the collection of dirt particles causing discolouration if not cared for properly. However, the maintenance and cleaning of this can be eased when selecting which tiles are going to be used. Selecting a tile design can be very exciting but it also helps to think practically, and it’s important to remember that practical doesn’t always mean bland or unattractive. Large format tiles are a great way to cover a larger area whilst minimising the amount of grout needed. In addition, if a dark shade of grout is used this will show less staining and help to ensure a fresh, clean look to the flooring.

Stain Removal It is likely that the floor is going to be victim to some form of spillage or stain. Damage including minor discolouration can still be caused if a liquid is left in place for long enough, despite a sealant being in place. Most fluid contaminations, if tackled quickly enough can be simply removed by wiping over the floor with a damp cloth. However, should this not suffice, Fullers Earth is a great product to deal with those tougher stains; after sponging up the stain allow the product to sit for around 30 minutes to enable absorption into the powder. Any surfaces that have been treated with Fullers Earth may need to be re-sealed.

These signs signify that the seal on the surface is wearing, therefore the absorbency is increasing and with that comes a higher risk of damage. It’s highly likely that the flooring seal will not wear evenly, this makes it all the more important that the flooring is intensively cleaned to remove any remaining seal before a new one is applied. As mentioned, it’s good practice to seek advice on which product is best suited to the material to determine the type of sealant remover that is used.

Aftercare and Everyday Maintenance Once a surface is newly laid or renovated it’s worthwhile to allow the protection of the surface to last for as long as possible before it is due for renovation again. The effectiveness of the seal can be reduced with the repeated use of regular floor cleaning products. To prolong the life of a protective seal, specialist aftercare cleaner should be used and strong bleach cleaners avoided. The use of protective mats under heavy furniture and floor mats in high footfall areas such as doorways can help to enhance the longevity of the flooring seal, in turn keeping your floor protected for longer. Overall, if given the correct care and attention tiles can have a long lifetime and remain to be a great finish for any environment.

Renovation As with many things, signs of wear will start to show the more something is used or exposed to traffic. It is important to remember that sealed floors in any environment will require periodic maintenance and complete renovation over time. If the floor is starting to accumulate grime and stains alongside a lack of shine to the finish, this indicates that the surface needs to be renovated.

EXCITING TIMES FOR INDUSTRY LEADER Over 50 years ago, a company in Arundel, West Sussex, produced a groundbreaking range of polytunnels for commercial horticulture. Continually growing, they are now the UK industry leaders in the design, manufacture and installation of inspired structures, ranging from beautifully curved timber canopies in nationwide visitor attractions to industrial steel constructions covering football pitches, ambulance bays and hospitals. But they are not stopping there. Fordingbridge also produce preengineered building frameworks from their custom developed Arundel factory. Garden centres, exhibition buildings for Zoo’s, coffee shops, even A&E wards. Their team of structural designers work solidly

to ensure every calculation is on the nose, ready for their craftsmen, also in-house, to produce the framework components. Their approach to work, allows for the rapid installation of impressive steel and timber structures that grace hospitals, leisure facilities and schools up and down the country. “We undertake all of the pre-fabrication here, leaving minimal disruption to the client onsite,” explains Stephen Toone, Managing Director of Fordingbridge. “We prefab all of our structural components offsite, meaning that once the groundworks are completed, the building envelope can be erected in a small number of weeks rather than months. It is great to see the reaction from the client or contractor when we get to work; our process is seriously quick.”

And the buildings themselves are far from the norm either. Working to a goal of banning boring buildings Fordingbridge excel in structural timber as well as steel, creating curves and lines that flow through any landscape. “We have invested in the technology and the people to make buildings interesting again,” Stephen says. “If you imagine a standard brick building. You could create interesting shapes, but it can be expensive, has a large carbon impact and takes time. Then you need to make it fit with the landscape. Now imagine having your foundation laid and seeing beautiful sustainably sourced timber curves begin to grace the landscape in a matter of days. Our approach allows that to happen.”

With such a wide commercial portfolio, Fordingbridge have a number of processes in place that promote results through relationships. Working closely either directly with the client, or via an architect or contractor, they ensure a full understanding from the outset allowing for a minimum of disruption and measured results. “We undertake installations in live hospitals, schools and Zoos, so prefab is a longstanding prerequisite rather than just a buzz word for us,” Stephen confirms. “We can’t ask a hospital to completely close for a few months while we do our bit. It is a case of do as much as we can offsite, arrive and install. Our position is enviable. We have our own structural drawing team, our own engineers and factory, our own logistics and our own installers. All these factors make our process and products exceptional.” The company’s portfolio is an impressive one and chances that either yourself, family or your colleagues have interacted with a Fordingbridge product is high. Follow us @ludmagazine

Installing hundreds of steel and timber canopies, walkways and shelters throughout schools, hospitals and theme parks, their experience in this field alone is broad enough. Combine this with the inspired commercial building back catalogue and the offering becomes even more enticing. What is next for Fordingbridge? Self-build, and the approach they have taken to it is an interesting one. Working either to an architects drawing, or using their own design team, they draw and manufacture the structurally calculated building components in their factory. They then deliver and completely install the building as they would regularly, or can now deliver the components in kit form for a third party to erect. “We understand that a lot of self-builders want to do just that. They want to get their hands dirty, stand back and see the fruits of their labours. But equally they don’t want to dig a hole and spend months getting out of it,” Stephen jokes. “Our skills with structure put all the details for our element of the

building in black and white. If the client wants light exposed timber beams and columns throughout, we can make that happen. If they want a steel framed atrium, polyester powder coated in RAL4003 covering a connecting swimming pool, no problem. Once we have taken a design order, we can provide full cost certainty so the client knows exactly what to expect. The steps which lead to this are all about communication, and we are strong believers in that. Our company is proud to have so much repeat business and so many referrals, and we don’t get that by keeping our clients guessing or not delivering.” From a covered walkway or canopy for your next commercial project, to an inspired building for your discerning client, Fordingbridge are certainly the company to consider.

Q&A WITH THE UK’S LEADING SUPPLIER

OF LANDSCAPE & GARDEN PLANTS With the end of 2019 vastly approaching what have you noticed in the trends this year regarding orders and popular products? A combination of tried & tested functional old favourites and inspirational high profile lines aimed at the retail market.

What would say have been your most popular product of this year and would you have said it would be this product at the start of the year? For sheer numbers the obvious answer is native broadleaf hedging – Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Field Maple and Holly etc in a variety of 1 and 2 year sizes. Lavenders remain an inspirational winner – our supply topping 110,000 this year. Texture, form and colour continues to inspire and our sale of Herbaceous Perennials is becoming dominant without our portfolio – 20 years ago demand was practically zero!

Have you undertaken any large case studies this year you would like to draw attention to? The Event Complex Aberdeen We recently teamed up with p1

Contractors Ltd to supply over £150,000 worth of plants for a multimillion-pound Scottish conference/ exhibition centre and largest new entertainment complex in Europe. Replacing the Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre (AECC), The Event Complex Aberdeen (TECA) is a £330 million development that opened in August 2019; it includes a new arena, conference halls, a multipurpose space, hotels and more. The new arena will host acts such as Rod Stewart, Michael Buble, Lewis Capaldi and Elton John in the coming months; it is set to attract an additional 4.5 million visitors bringing £113m of extra spend to the Scottish economy.

Our supply included nearly 40,000 shrubs, 170 three-metre-wide hedera screens, over 30,000 bare-root transplants and more than 400 trees.

Linlithgow-based p1 was responsible for all the soft landscaping on the project, soiling all areas around the complex along with seeding works and tree, shrub and woodland planting around the site. Ronnie Blair Contracts Manager for the project on behalf of p1 Contractors Ltd, added: “Having a company such as Johnsons of Whixley working with us on such a large-scale project has been very reassuring, Iain has taken the time to come up to Scotland and walk the site offering information on the planting to help me with the contract. With the opening of the new complex on the horizon, I am excited about the prospect of returning in a few years to see what it looks like with a bit of maturity something which should be in keeping with the ambitious company we are.”

Suitable for green roofs and all planting situations

MAXIMISE THE BENEFITS OF YOUR GREEN ROOF OR URBAN PLANTING WITH THE NEW PLATIPUS G-ROOF® SYSTEM With urban areas continuing to grow around the world, the need to utilise the green spaces available is at an all-time high. The use of green roofs and urban planters have become one of the established solutions for maximising these green spaces and enjoying the ecological benefits they provide. Plants and trees improve their local microclimate by absorbing energy through a process known as evapotranspiration which will make the area cooler. This bio layer will also act as thermal insulation for green roofs during the colder months keeping the interior warmer. Any roof garden or urban planting will improve the biodiversity of the environment by attracting birds, butterflies, insects and bees. Due to green roofs foliage refracting and reflecting sound, it will improve the sound insulation of the building. Foliage will also enhance the surrounding air quality by increasing the oxygen levels and reducing the nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter. The biggest benefit is what it can do for the people using it. The ability to find a peaceful spot, to enjoy the biodiversity and to relax, will improve the effectiveness and efficiency of those using the space. Platipus has designed G-ROOF®, a modular structural and drainage system using recyclable

26

www.landud.co.uk

plastics, to support the development of these urban areas. G-ROOF is a lightweight and easy to assemble system that works ideally with intensive roof gardens and planting areas where the green space can be maximised to include trees and larger shrubs. These trees can be anchored directly to the G-ROOF using standard Platipus Tree Anchoring Systems and the incredible vertical load capacity of the G-ROOF supports the additional weight associated with intensive gardens. Green roofs and urban planting areas are often exposed to the elements so the ability to retain water and assist with stormwater management is important. G-ROOF assists with the first interception of storm rain because it has large integrated cups for water retention. The G-ROOF’s ability to retain stormwater will ensure that your green roof or urban planting becomes a successful source control mechanism by alleviating water pressure on congested urban environments.

Aside from stormwater management, where water is scarce, the ability for G-ROOF to provide valuable water storage will ensure that the planted vegetation has better chance of thriving. Where your design requires planting areas to be built up, G-ROOF can be constructed quickly by stacking and rotating cells 90° to give you a solution that retains water, allows drainage and provides support at the same time. G-ROOF System is a new and exciting innovation that will add simplicity and value to any future roof garden or urban planting project. GREEN-TECH IS A MAJOR SUPPLIER TO NEW LEEDS

SKELTON LAKE M1 SERVICES Overview A ÂŁ60 million Leeds Skelton Lake Services on Junction 45 of the M1 has been completed during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The innovative new service station includes a business centre, food and beverage outlets and landscaped areas. A visitor area with a lakeside viewing deck is still to be built. Landscape Contractors Brambledown Landscapes Services were commissioned to undertake the soft landscaping of this huge project which had to tie in with the natural environment of the nearby Skelton Lake and Gardens. They turned to their long-term supplier

28

www.landud.co.uk

Green-tech for the landscaping materials and sundries.

The Solution Skelton Lakes Service Station in Leeds is unlike any other. It boasts a twisting living roof and many unique landscape features. Brambledown Landscapes Services were responsible for constructing natural landscaping throughout the 30-acre service station site. They have a long-standing relationship with Green-tech, who supplied the majority of the landscaping materials which included over 200 tonnes of Greentree topsoil, 150 tonnes of compost,

300m3 of bark Mulch, in excess of 7000 Tubex Shrub Shelters and all of the tree ancillaries, which included stakes, belting, blocks and irrigation for circa 500 newly planted trees. For the trees planted into the hardlandscaped areas we supplied in the region of 100m² of the urban tree planting system ArborRaft, along with 100 tonnes of ArborRaft soil and subsoil. Used together, the system combines geo-cellular ArborRaft units which lock together within the tree pit and nutrientrich ArborRaft soil. Combined they provide essential load bearing support and reduce soil compaction within the tree pit to enable healthy root growth.

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

The Outcome Skelton Lake Services is open and has been very well received. It is considered a high quality “new concept” in Motorway Service Area design where visitors can take a break from their journey and relax whilst enjoying a beautifullylandscaped environment. The ‘new concept’ is where its natural features (wildflower roof, tree-lined approach roads, access to the lake) are the building’s main selling point, not forgetting the view of the lake. Brambledown Yorkshire Manager, Sean Easton said: “It was a pleasure to work with Green-tech on this innovative major motorway services near Leeds. Working throughout the Corona pandemic has obviously thrown up many challenges but we have worked closely with Green-tech throughout to ensure all product deliveries were made on time and as required. Their product choice is excellent and their service levels and customer care is always outstanding. I would happily recommend them.” Follow us @ludmagazine

PLANTBOX –

CLEVERLY SIMPLE VERTICAL GREENING PlantBox is the new and cleverly simple living wall system that will transform the way you and your clients think about vertical greening. From balconies and railings to hoardings and commercial installations, PlantBox will instantly enrich the space.

Versatile way to add greenery Our PlantBox modular planters can be easily assembled by clicking and stacking them together, providing a quick and simple solution to greening the grey and reconnecting people with nature.

Really, really simple irrigation Each PlantBox trough features a self-contained, reservoir-wicking irrigation system, meaning moisture from the in-built reservoir is wicked up directly into the plants’ rootzone. All thanks to a concealed overflow allowing for any excess water to drain through and cascade vertically down – giving you and your customer that all-in-one-livingwall-and-water-feature display!

As each trough has a built-in float indicator telling you when to top up, it provides a practically carefree, and extremely low maintenance, living wall system. We want to make our living walls even easier to maintain, so we now also supply a simple irrigation kit that will allow for quick and carefree watering at the twist of a tap. A real game-changer.

Freestanding or wall mounted, PlantBox can be easily attached or restrained to hoardings, walls, fences and railings. The perfect way to cover bare walls or breathe life into neutral spaces - and all this at a price point that opens up a whole new market for green walls. GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

GLORIOUS GARDENS BY RANDLE SIDDELEY

IN FULL BLOOM AT CHELSEA WATERFRONT With summer in full swing, the beautiful landscaped gardens at Chelsea Waterfront are now in bloom, providing a green sanctuary on the river banks of west London. The unveiling of the gardens coincides with the reopening of the sales and marketing suite at the landmark residential development by Hutchison Property Group.

32

www.landud.co.uk

Chelsea Waterfront, designed by internationally renowned architect Sir Terry Farrell, overlooks a part of the River Thames which was previously inaccessible. The luxury development comprises 10 buildings including a 37 storey tower, the tallest residential building in SW10, a 25 storey tower and the conversion of the historic Lots Road Power Station, which powered the London Underground for almost a century.

Chelsea Flower Show Inspiration The gardens at Chelsea Waterfront are inspired by the works of the annual Chelsea Flower Show and Chelsea Physic Gardens. Acclaimed landscape practice, Randle Siddeley, combined creative flair for a classic yet contemporary landscape. Water gardens are seamlessly connected by three stunning bridges over the creek, while green space and planting create an oasis of nature with breath-taking views along the river to Battersea and Chelsea Bridge. Follow us @ludmagazine

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE Landscaping to reconnect the local community The landscaping forms a procession of public spaces that celebrates the historic power station and the scheme’s unique location beside Chelsea Creek, whilst reconnecting the local community to the previously inaccessible section of the River Thames. From the entrance on Chelsea Harbour Drive a tree lined promenade leads through to a central park that overlooks the power station façade. Several routes from the park lead to the water gardens that include serene water features, discrete seating areas and an elevated open lawn that provides panoramic views of the river. Generous stone steps lead from the water gardens down to the riverside pathway and provide informal places for sitting and watching the river in the sun.

Planting influenced by water The palette of the planting was influenced by the scheme’s proximity to water, with intertidal terraces planted with reeds and black alder forming an avenue along the Creekside promenade. As an ode to the site’s industrial heritage, the tree species gleam with autumnal rust and sit alongside tulip trees planted adjacent to the central park and China trees planted within the water gardens. Structure is created in the planting beds with native shrubs as well as clipped hedges, which are synonymous with the public spaces of Chelsea. Between these structural forms, herbaceous species are interspersed with grasses and hardy groundcovers, creating a naturalistic character that provides year round colour and encourages wildlife. Herbaceous species include several varieties of sage, coneflower, scabious and ornamental grasses such as feather reed grass and tufted hair grass. The Lord Kenilworth, Chairman of Randle Siddeley, said: “At Randle Siddeley we are immensely proud of how the landscape is maturing at Chelsea Waterfront. When we originally designed the gardens we wanted to create spaces that were not only visually beautiful and inviting for residents, but also responded to the context of the site. GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

We were particularly inspired by the scheme’s unique location on the River Thames and its location in the heart of Chelsea. Planting throughout the site reflects this from the neat, clipped hedges commonly associated with Chelsea to the serene water features and aquatic planting. Having been involved in the project for over 20 years, it is wonderful to see it come to fruition each summer and it only gets better year on year”. Marketing suite returns Hutchinson Property Group have also re-opened the doors to its marketing suite offering prospective buyers the chance to book appointments to view the completed two, three and four bedroom apartments available within Tower West, the tallest of the two glass buildings. A number of the homes available also have their own private garden. Residents benefit from a wealth of amenities including 24 hour concierge, underground car parking and a health and fitness

34

club complete with swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gymnasium and spa treatment rooms. Robin Gevell, Chief Marketing Manager, Hutchison Property Group, said: “This is the perfect time to be reopening our marketing suite. Homes with outdoor space and gardens have been top of the wish list for buyers during the lockdown so we are looking forward to showing prospective residents the colourful gardens and the apartments for sale which are ready to move into. As our burgeoning and close knit community continues to develop we are able to offer beautiful communal gardens which stretch out towards the river which is unrivalled in this part of London. Allowing people to unwind and relax outside in their own space is vital and we are excited that residents will be able to experience this on their own doorstep.”

Chelsea Waterfront is located less than a 5 minute walk from Imperial Wharf station for direct access to Central London, while nearby Chelsea Harbour Pier provides riverboat services on The Thames Clipper. Lots Road and the iconic Kings Road are also in close proximity for Michelin star restaurants, antique shops, boutiques and exquisite cafes.

Prices at Chelsea Waterfront start from £1,400,000 for a two-bedroom apartment. Please visit www.towerwestlondon.com for more information or call 020 7352 8852. Photography: Mike Couchman Follow us @ludmagazine

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS

REFLECTIONS ON OUR WORLD DURING COVID

BY SIMON RICHARDS, FOUNDER OF LAND STUDIO

The Coronavirus pandemic has not only changed the world for ever, it will have a lasting impact on the future of landscape architecture. Since we established our practice four years ago we have seen big changes in how people want to design, create and manage the landscapes they live and work in. Covid-19 has accelerated this growing demand for inspirational landscapes and the outdoors. Covid-19 has had a significant impact on leisure sector over the past few months but before the pandemic, perhaps as a result of Brexit, it was a sector that was evolving. The British staycation boom was taking off and it is not surprising that over half of tourism businesses were reporting an increase in people wanting to holiday in the UK. Fast forward to today and now that many people are reluctant to fly or travel overseas we expect there will be an even bigger boom in people wanting to holiday at home. What is interesting is the experience that people want to get from their holiday. Gone are the days of people settling for poor quality food and accommodation.

40

www.landud.co.uk

They want spacious holiday parks with fire pits, glamping sites with private hot-tubs and great places to eat out with stunning views.

We love a challenge. As a specialist landscape architecture practice, we work with our clients to help them realise the full potential of their land and its surroundings – whether they are a holiday park, a glamping site or a rural estate. Follow us @ludmagazine

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS We recently worked with the worldfamous Halen Mon on Anglesey, whose sea salt is enjoyed around the world and is a favourite of leading chefs. They wanted an outdoor eating venue – called Tide - to tempt their visitors with a delicious menu of coffee and artisan dishes all made by their chef Sam Lomas, who joined them from the famous River Cottage in Devon and the tutelage of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. We worked with them to transform a piece of land outside their production facility into a beautiful designed seating area to accommodate their food truck and make the most of the stunning views across the Menai Straits. As part of the design, we created a canopied timber decked space, surrounded by earth mounds planted with native wildflowers, timber seating and paths using coastal gravel. And people love it. The layout, the natural planting and of course the view have all been praised on Tripadvisor and featured on Instagram. Covid or no Covid there will be an increased demand for beautiful immersive experiences like the one at Tide. As landscape architects, we have a responsibility to make sure that our designs are sensitively integrated into the landscape whilst still creating transformative, 21st Century experiences for people to enjoy.

PAVING REFURBISHMENT AND REPOINTING PROJECT In talking to Local Authority Engineers recently, it has become very clear that the information in an independent Investigative Report, which was made following a detailed 8 year durability evaluation and with site inspections by the team from Paving Expert.com that was carried out approximately 2 years ago in 2017, would be of tremendous assistance to ALL Town and City Councils, District and other Unitary Authorities around this country. The Historic Hitchin Market paving refurbishment and repointing project using GftK’s vdw 850 plus Paving Joint Mortar was now carried out after extensive evaluations and field testing for 12 months by the responsible engineers, completed 10 years ago, and just as in the inspection two years ago, in 2019 after 10 years service, it is still look good, performing in all weather conditions and under frequent heavy trafficking of this busy market square!

‘After 8 years it looks like it was jointed yesterday!’ - These were the words from www.PavingExpert. com when they visited to inspect the paving refurbishment that they had last witnessed underway on the site eight years ago, when the traditional granite sett paving of the historic Hitchin Market Square in Hertfordshire, was refurbished and repointed with GftK’s vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar. The expert continues: ‘Oh yes - The paving had been patched and pointed, re-pointed and grouted, glued and all sorts over the years, but nothing lasted long. They might get a couple of years, but before you knew it, the setts were a rocking and rolling all over again. Faced with the prospect of having to lift and re-lay the whole square, at huge cost, the Local Authority and their Consultants undertook some tests and decided to have one last roll of the dice with what looked like a very promising product: VDW 850 resin jointing mortar by NCC Streetscape.’

The Hitchin Town Centre Paving Refurbishment Inspection Report in full can be viewed http://www. pavingexpert.com/point_ncc06.htm

Like many old town centres and market squares, this is now a very different and demanding environment for paving and

particularly the pointing, due to multiple heavy duty loadings and all sorts of modern traffic exposure, plus frequent mechanical street cleaning etc. However, working in phases, without closing the market, this project was completed on time and on budget, because work could continue and be completed using GftK’s vdw 850. This unique paving joint mortar is based on graded, water dispersed, epoxy resin coated and bound, alluvial, no-fines quartz sand. No-fines means no-dust produced in mixing either - very important for occupied streets with people and businesses continuing to work. Just as the contractor can continue to work, even despite the wet weather and low temperatures throughout, which would have made any cement based or single-pack paving pointing mortar useless and doomed to failure. Today after now 10 Years, the historic market paving is still looking great, a valuable asset to the Town; most importantly it will also continue to do so!

THE TECHTURF ROOTZONE REINFORCEMENT SYSTEM Benefits of Naylor TechTurf:

The TechTurf rootzone reinforcement system was originally developed in the UK following extensive research carried in the UK and USA. Subsequent research showed that the use of mesh elements provided up to a 35% improvement in reinforcing effect when compared to all fibre alternatives. The TechTurf system provides a solution to load bearing; trafficked or high wear grassed areas and is SuDs compliant.

The system consists of 3 elements: a) The reinforced rootzone material b) Specialised fertiliser c) Specially grown turf to complement the rootzone The TechTurf rootzone is reinforced with an exact percentage of randomly oriented polypropylene mesh elements. The grass roots penetrate and entwine with the mesh elements, stabilising the system and providing positive anchorage for the grass plants.

44

www.landud.co.uk

The result is an engineered natural grass surface with high load bearing characteristics, improved damage resistance and a unique cultivation property which overcomes the problem of soil compaction. It is an ideal solution for a natural, environmentally attractive area where excessive traffic loadings are anticipated but a natural grass finish is desired.

a) SUDS compliant - Excellent drainage properties. b) Invisible once installed but still performs. c) Improved root growth reinforcement maintains hydration and prevents compaction. d) Natural Alternative - maintains the natural environment. e) No grid reinforcement visible. f) Versatile - Excellent in 'high traffic' areas giving a natural appearance but supplying a hard wearing surface. g) Ease of Maintenance - No special measures required. h) Cost Effective - a viable alternative to grid reinforcement.

The system is therefore ideal for: Walkways, Emergency access routes, Sport Surfaces, Aviation Areas, Equestrian, Landscaping, Housing Projects & Public Areas

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR MAXIMIZING AND PRESERVING AN OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE TWO EASY UPGRADES THAT ADD FUNCTION, PROTECTION AND CLIENT SATISFACTION By: Simon Thomas, TrexPro and Owner of Simon Thomas Deck and Design It’s no surprise that we Brits love our gardens! And with many people spending more time at home these days, outdoor spaces have become more important than ever. From small extensions to major renovations, consumer interest in deck and patio remodeling

projects is at an all-time high, and homeowners are more willing to invest in elements that expand and extend the use of their garden spaces. One of the easiest – and often overlooked – ways to add value and function to any outdoor area is to create usable, dry storage space beneath a deck. As long as the space is accessible and properly protected from the elements, it can be used to store virtually anything. And who couldn’t use a little more storage space?

Follow us @ludmagazine

DECKING Go Below: Utilizing Under-Deck Areas For years, homeowners – not to mention architects, builders and contractors – have neglected to take advantage of under-deck spaces. And, for those that have used the space under a deck for storage, odds are it hasn’t been pretty – especially in light of our often wet and rainy U.K. climate. I’ve certainly seen my share of outdoor storage spaces filled with deteriorating items covered in mud, mould and mildew due to being exposed to too much moisture. Still, creating useable space beneath a deck is one of my favourite addons to any garden project. The secret to success and customer satisfaction is adding a deck drainage system. Using a network of troughs and downspouts, these systems capture and divert water away from a deck, not only preserving the studwork but also making the area under the deck useable for storage or as additional living area. There are two main categories of drainage systems available, depending on whether they’re installed above or below the joists. For optimal protection and aesthetics, I prefer an abovethe-joist system, such as Trex® RainEscape®. This system uses an ultra-durable, rubberized membrane that drapes down into each joist bay. The membrane pieces are shaped so that they can be stapled to the top of the joists yet hang lower at one end of the bay to facilitate drainage. When the joists cantilever past a bearer, separate pieces are installed on each side and sloped to direct water to a gutter on the inner face of the beam.

Trex RainEscape funnels are easy to install

Follow us @ludmagazine

Trex RainEscape installed

Trex RainEscape with Soffit Lights

The main advantage to this type of system is that it protects the entire substructure and the area beneath the deck from water damage and deterioration. Trex RainEscape also includes a heavyduty waterproof tape that protects joists and bearers from moisture penetration, helps to hold screws in place longer and serves as a shield between galvanized metal and timber. Furthermore, the membrane material – compared with metal, vinyl or PVC – accommodates a broader range of ceiling options for homeowners seeking a finished look. Among the biggest advantages of Trex RainEscape is that it is very easy and efficient to install –

whether during a new deck build and when replacing existing deck boards. Any contractor or DIYer can do it. The entire system includes just five SKUs – a 40cm and 30cm drainage trough sheet, a downspout, butyl waterproof caulk and butyl waterproof tape. Additionally, only three tools – scissors or a utility knife, a staple gun hammer and a caulk gun – are needed for installation. Each trough is clearly labeled with staple markers to expedite the process, which takes no more than a few hours to complete. And, the system is backed by a 20-year warranty from Trex® – the world’s #1 decking brand.

DECKING Limitless Possibilities Once protected from the elements, the dry space beneath a deck can be used for any number of purposes from storing lawn equipment, gardening tools and patio essentials to serving as additional living space outfitted with everything from upholstered furnishings and decorative accessories to ceiling fans, entertainment components and Trex® RainEscape® soffit lights. Thanks to the innovative abovethe-joist application of the Trex RainEscape system, gas lines and electrical wiring can be run safely and discreetly between the deck surface and a soffit ceiling. From a storage standpoint, there are endless possibilities for making the most of the area beneath a deck no matter the size of the area. Following are just a few of the ways that my clients use the bonus storage space that I’ve integrated into their decks using the Trex RainEscape system:

Maximize the space beneath an elevated deck with Trex RainEscape

• Storing seasonal items such as pool equipment, patio furniture, cushions, hammocks, camping essentials and yard games • Tucking away outdoor toys like bicycles, scooters, water tables and yard games • Sheltering grills and smokers from moisture and corrosion • Housing (and hiding) lawnmowers, garden tools and hoses, along with leftover seed and fertilizer

• Keeping sports equipment handy, protected and ready for action • Parking and protecting a boat, snowmobile or ATV from the outdoor elements • As a workshop for crafting and DIY projects • As a playhouse for the kids (my favourite!)

DECKING Trex Protect is a self-adhesive butyl tape available in two widths – 40mm x 20m for joists and 100mm x 20m for bearers. Designed specifically for use on decks, it works on horizontal and vertical surfaces and is applied as a “cap” (vs. wrapping), which allows the timber to breathe. The peel-and-stick application is simple and requires almost no trimming. The tape lies directly on the boards and requires minimal cuts and little overlap making installation a breeze. Furthermore, the butyl adhesive is super sticky, yet pliable, which allows it to create a tight seal around fasteners to prevent water from infiltrating screw holes. It doesn’t dry out or curl up like other construction tapes and performs extremely well in a wide range of temperatures. Trex Protect tape also features a non-skid surface, making it easier and safer to walk across during construction. This non-slip coating helps to prevent falls which are one of the most common potential hazards of deck construction.

Prolong the Life of Studwork The U.K. receives more than its fair share of precipitation, and these wet, rainy days can wreak havoc on the substructure of a deck. Easily one of timber’s worst enemies, moisture contributes to mould growth and can accelerate structural deterioration. When joists and beams are exposed, water seeps into screw holes and sits on the wood causing it to rot and the screws to rust. Additionally, the natural expansion and contraction of wood due to seasonal freezing and thawing can cause beams to split and weaken over time, posing serious safety concerns. This is especially important if a homeowner is investing in premium, composite decking, such as Trex, which is engineered and warrantied to last for several decades. It’s only logical that a customer will expect the substructure to last just as long. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case when working with timber. In fact, a recent survey of builders revealed that nearly all timber substructures show signs of splitting, rotting or decaying after just eight years.

Follow us @ludmagazine

If a complete drainage system is not viable for a deck project, it is still important to protect the studwork from moisture penetration that can lead to rot and deterioration over time. Deck flashing tape is designed to shield the tops of timber joists, rim joists, bearers and ledger boards from water damage. It also acts as a moisture barrier between wood and galvanized metal and helps deck screws and fasteners hold longer and stronger for enhanced structural integrity. My go-to product is Trex® Protect™ Joist and Bearer Tape. I use it on every deck I build – no matter the size or design – because I want my decks to last.

Drive Customer Satisfaction and Referrals Sometimes it’s what clients don’t see that makes all the difference. Trex RainEscape and Trex Protect are products that sell themselves by adding considerable function, protection and value to a deck without adding a lot of time or cost. For homeowners, this translates into increased satisfaction and return on investment. For builders, they are great ways to boost revenue and referrals. I recommend one or the other to all of my customers and can tell you from my own experience, these minor add-ons can have a major impact on your bottom line. NEW HIGHER SPECIFICATION FOR DECK SUBSTRUCTURES The specification requirements for pressure treated softwood deck substructures are set to change in BS8417, the British Standard for wood preservation, when it is next revised with leading trade bodies incorporating the changes now.

This means that all softwood beams, joists, wall plates, blocking and bracing will have to be pressure treated to the same level as posts that are in permanent contact with the ground, a category referred to as Use Class 4.

This brings the UK into line with standards in Sweden, Finland, France and north America where the whole deck substructure system (posts, beams and joists) is recognised as safety critical. TDCA members are working to adopt this change in policy in readiness for the publication of the revised BS8417, probably in 2021. Leading the way, Use Class 4 joists are already available from TCDA members Hoppings Softwoods, Silva Timber and Champion Timber. The question is how many decking installers will pick up on this new requirement and ensure that the work they undertake meets the latest standards? Certainly, TDCA DeckMark accredited installers whose work is inspected to ensure compliance, will be fully conversant. To find a DeckMark accredited installer or enquire about achieving accreditation, email info@tdca.org.uk or visit the TDCA website www.tdca.org.uk where you’ll find a UK supplier search facility.

LOVE YOUR HOME AND GARDEN CASE STUDY

BY ENVIROBUILD THE PROJECT EnviroBuild was recently tasked to complete a project on ITV’s Love Your Home and Garden (final episode, series 2). Here’s a rundown of what the project was, how we undertook it, and what the endresult and responses were.

52

www.landud.co.uk

The aim of the project was to refurbish the garden into a manageable and easily navigable space for the Parrys, a family consisting of two wheelchair-bound parents and two children that assist as carers. The garden was wide but shallow, and so one of the main aims was to create an elongating effect on the available space.

EnviroBuild was chosen as part of the refurbishment team to supply cladding and decking that matched the project’s aims; specifically, these were being wheelchair friendly and pulling off the illusion of a longer garden.

Follow us @ludmagazine

DECKING

THE SOLUTION After careful consideration, the EnviroBuild team decided to use matching Hyperion cladding and decking; these were installed in a chevron design, slotting in the boards at a 45° angle. This was done to lengthen the garden and place attention on the new raised triangular beds and green spaces, amplifying the natural beauty arranged by the Love Your Home and Garden team. The following cladding and decking products were used, carefully selected by EnviroBuild thanks to their slip-resistant, low-maintenance qualities, making them perfect for the Parry family’s needs: • Hyperion Fencing – Pioneer Granite • Hyperion Decking – in Frontier Slate • Hyperion Cladding – In Pioneer Granite

Hyperion Fencing in the shade granite was then used on the perimeter of the garden to provide a modern finish.

The project was completed in a quick turn around and resulted in a beautifully crafted garden.

DECKING

THE OUTCOME The end result of this Love Your Home and Garden venture was that the Parrys, largely thanks to EnviroBuild’s decking and cladding, now have a beautiful garden that all members of the family can easily access and relax in. By choosing EnviroBuild decking, the kitchen is now on-level with the garden, providing one cohesive transition from indoors to outdoors. The products chosen by EnviroBuild are not only aesthetically pleasing and suit the style of the garden, but are also practical and reliable for years to come, making this a wellworthy investment for the Parry home.

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK Clare Callan – Spun gold TV: “The high-quality finish of the Hyperion products supplied by Envirobuild came in a wide variety of colours to choose from. We also wanted a cohesive look with the fencing, decking and cladding, so we chose Envirobuild who could provide us with all of these elements.

DECKING

SIMPLE, NO FUSS COMPOSITE DECKING Charles Taylor, Sales Director at Composite Prime, discusses why composite decking should be used in more projects, and top tips on maintenance and the options available. Composite products have become well known as a superior product when choosing the right material to install on a project. For anyone looking to make the most out of an outdoor space, composite decking is the perfect solution. Although traditional timber decking has been the preferred choice of many for years, it’s a high maintenance product which requires annual painting and staining. Composite decking is increasing in popularity as it’s a simple, no fuss alternative due to its unique formula which makes it low maintenance and more durable than traditional products.

56

www.landud.co.uk

The plastic content gives the boards a long lifespan without the need to treat or seal the decking, while the wood content enables the product to retain its natural look and feel. This formulation also means that composites don’t need life extending treatments such as sanding or oil, and the boards won’t splinter or rot and can therefore be installed safely in a range of projects. With people spending an increasing amount of time outside, more investment than ever is being made to improve outdoor spaces from residential gardens to commercial projects. Composite decking is the ideal product to shape outdoor spaces as it is not only a durable investment, but its versatility means that it can be used to create completely bespoke designs which will look great for years to come.

The options available The HD Deck® range manufactured by Composite Prime is eco-friendly and socially responsible. Made using recycled plastic and FSC® certified oak wood flour, the products are sustainable, ethical and environmentally friendly. One million plastic bottles are bought every minute around the world, and that number will top half a trillion by 2021, however less than half of those bottles end up getting recycled. As global challenges around plastic waste and the ability to plant forests to meet future timber demands increase, composite provides a sustainable and aesthetic alternative to timber. HD Deck Dual® decking boards developed by Composite Prime have a reversible two-colour option on

DECKING each board which not only saves spaces in warehouses but also offers the opportunity to lay a deck with contrasting colours to create a bespoke finish. The dual-sided board also makes it easy to refresh the deck by simply turning the boards over to reveal the new colour. The boards are 3D embossed with wood grain to ensure they look natural, and are capped to increase protection against fading, staining and other potentially damaging elements. The boards are low maintenance, slip resistant, durable, sustainable and barefoot safe so even high traffic areas like bars and restaurants will benefit from investing in HD Deck DualÂŽ.

One of the key benefits of Composite Prime is also the ease with which the decking can be installed. Whilst traditional decking options can often be laborious and tricky to take on, requiring specialist tools, the HD DeckÂŽ range has a secret clip system that is easy to install.

ASSOCIATION NEWS

HOW DO YOU SPECIFY

PRESERVATIVE TREATED WOOD? Recent ‘mystery shopper’ research sponsored by the UK Wood Protection Association (WPA) confirms that understanding amongst many users of preservative treated wood is very poor indeed. When asked if there was a specific treatment specification for timber in ground contact, over 90% of people surveyed said they didn’t know. When asked if they understood what ‘Use Class 4’ means, 72% said they didn’t know. So, how do YOU specify preservative treated wood?! It’s a mistake to assume that all pressure treated wood is the same. Whilst one piece of treated wood may look very much like any other, the level of preservative protection could be very different. That’s because the British Standard for wood preservation, BS 8417, requires that the loading and penetration of preservative impregnated into the wood is tailored to the desired end use. Applications for treated wood are therefore grouped into ‘Use Classes’, the three main being The challenge is how best to simplify this message whilst not losing technical accuracy. Therefore, starting this summer, WPA has launched an educational campaign in partnership with the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) & the Timber Decking & Cladding Association (TDCA): For the fencing, garden and landscaping sector, the focus is on promoting the use of the term Use Class 4 for treated wood used in contact with or close to the ground, using the WPA’s ‘Make Sure it’s 4’ logo and communications package.

58

www.landud.co.uk

James Jones Sawmills

For those who need further guidance on what the most critical Use Classes mean in practice, WPA and TTF have developed three new A4 Guidance Notes on Understanding Use Class 2,3 & 4 preservative treated wood. These include a simple explanation of what national standards require for each application, what species are most suitable, what preservative penetration to expect in different treated commodities and the necessary quality control criteria. For those who wish to delve deeper, the WPA website www.thewpa.org. uk contains all you need to know.

Treated Wood Specification & Installation Check List • Establish the Use Class of the timber you need, before ordering. • Tell your supplier in writing, that the wood must be treated to that particular Use Class to comply with BS 8417. Ask them to verify that the wood supplied meets your Use Class specification – on the delivery note and invoice or a treatment certificate. • When buying from stock always check to which Use Class the wood has been treated. • NEVER substitute wood that has been treated for an indoor application for use in an external application – failure is inevitable. • Do NOT supply wood that has been treated for external use for what you know will only be internal applications. • For wood in permanent ground or fresh water contact, or providing exterior structural support, Use Class 4 levels of protection MUST be achieved. Anything less and service life, structural safety and customer satisfaction will be compromised. • When cross cutting, notching or boring treated timber products during installation, ALWAYS apply an end grain preservative treatment to freshly exposed areas – to maintain the integrity of the protection. • NEVER put cut ends in the ground, even if end grain coated.

To paraphrase a well known slogan, ‘Stay Alert: Control Treatment Quality: Protect your Business’!

Is your ground contact timber fit for purpose? British and European Standards group the applications for timber products into a series of Use Classes. The Use Class system tells a wood treater just how much preservative protection is required for every application. Use Class 4 is for timber products installed in contact with or very close to the ground and frequently wet. Typical Use Class 4 applications include:

Fence posts, retaining walls, landscaping timbers, playground equipment, decking posts, decking joists, boardwalk substructures and any external application where structural integrity is essential for user safety. Always make sure the treated wood you buy or sell is fit for purpose. And if it’s going anywhere near the ground: Make sure it’s Use Class 4 treated. Anything less and service life, structural safety and customer satisfaction will be compromised.

HATFIELD HOUSE GOES GREEN

WITH HUSQVARNA BATTERY Hertfordshire’s Hatfield House thanks battery power for helping maintain its extensive grounds, following their impressive results with Husqvarna Battery Series, after making a switch to the fuelalternative. Built in 1611 by Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury and Chief Minister to King James I, Hatfield House is a beautiful Jacobean property and popular tourist attraction. It is here where Andrew Turvey, head of park and gardens, along with his team of ten employees, began their tool transformation to Husqvarna battery to help preserve

and maintain Hatfield House’s vast estate. Following a demonstration provided by the Husqvarna team, Andrew was instantly impressed by the product’s pricepoints and their ability to be used during unsavoury weather, something which his previous nonHusqvarna battery models struggled with. Since their first demo, Andrew’s collection of Husqvarna Battery Series has continued to grow, with his product highlights including the 535iXP chainsaw, 520iHD70 hedge cutter, 530iPT5 telescopic pole saw,

520iHT4 telescopic hedge cutter, 525iB handheld blower and the 535iRXT and 520iLX brush cutters. Andrew also maintains vast areas of formal lawns with multiple Husqvarna Automower®. Andrew commented on his transition to Husqvarna battery power: “From our first initial test of Husqvarna battery, we knew straight away that the products would make a big difference to the way we work. With 200 acres of park and garden to regularly maintain, we rely on products that can withstand heavy duty use, and the Battery Series has done just that.” Follow us @ludmagazine

TOOLS, PLANT & EQUIPMENT It wasn’t just Andrew that needed to be converted to battery. With a team of ten employees and 20 volunteers, Andrew also needed to introduce his new way of working to his team of professional gardeners. Andrew discussed: “When I first introduced battery to my team they were initially sceptical about the products and were concerned that the battery equipment would not provide the power they were typically used to. After testing Husqvarna battery products however, these initial concerns quickly faded away, and it’s now safe to say that they are battery converts. The team are not only using the battery products at work, they’ve also switched to battery in their own homes.” Having used Husqvarna battery over the last two and a half years, Andrew and his team have noticed many benefits of using the battery equipment, not only environmentally, but financially and physically as well. Andrew commented: “There are a number of benefits we’ve experienced switching to battery products, in particular the time and money saved from no longer having to travel to purchase fuel. This task regularly took two hours, but now the time can now be spent on-site which has been really helpful. “Additionally, for levels of comfort, the products are brilliant. With our previous petrol equipment, we regularly had to strain to get them started, but with battery, we can simply turn them on with a push of a button. Not only that, the lower levels of vibrations compared to our previous non-battery machinery is significant. Thanks to the reduced movement we are able to use the products more comfortably and for longer periods at a time, which also helps to increase our productivity. “The 525iB handheld blower and the 535iRXT and 520iLX brush cutters in particular have made a huge difference to the way we work. The brush cutters are used daily on the estate, by the team and Lady Salisbury herself, thanks to their Follow us @ludmagazine

light-weight design and ability to be turned on and off when needed for short burst of use, without having to warm them up and refuel. We regularly use the handheld blower at Hatfield Train Station and no longer need to worry about disrupting commuters due to its low noise levels. “Being able to switch the batteries from one product to another so seamlessly, without the worry of fuel is brilliant. The products have not only helped our daily work, but it is also a great feeling knowing that we’re making a positive impact on the environment. Not only has Husqvarna opened our eyes

to garden battery machinery, the results we achieved encouraged us to purchase a battery powered utility vehicle. “In the future we look forward to taking further advantage of Husqvarna’s offerings, including Husqvarna Fleet Services™ to track and receive real-time data from our machines, and further extend our collection as new battery models launch.”

Designed by two-time Masters Champion José María Olazábal, the venue comprises 33 holes split into three courses of 18, nine and six holes. The golf club also sits in the noticeable shadow of Education City Stadium, one of the host venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Education City also includes a state-of-the-art learning and practice facility housed in the venue’s Centre of Excellence and is at the heart of Qatar’s vision to grow the game in the Middle Eastern country. The Education City course is fully equipped with a comprehensive range of John Deere machinery, including the latest E-Cut hybrid electric greens and fairway mower technology. The local John Deere dealer, Progressive Trading, has supported the golf course throughout the partnership with machine selection and set-up, to ensure that the entire fleet delivers a first-class, quality finish to the playing surfaces. During the 2020 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, John Deere and Progressive Trading were able to invite key customers from diverse countries to visit the venue and meet the greenkeeping team to exchange information about local challenges. “Such an event is a great opportunity for customers to experience turf management from a new perspective, in a different part of

the world with different challenges such as high temperatures,” said Carlos Aragones, John Deere’s Manager Sales & Marketing, Golf & Turf Europe, North Africa, Near & Middle East and CIS. “All this was represented at Education City Golf Club’s stateof-the-art venue. My sincere congratulations go to the event management and greenkeeping team for the outstanding quality of presentation and the tournament’s success.” Education City General Manager Michael Braidwood added: “Our guests were particularly impressed by the facilities and extremely high standards of course maintenance. They also appreciated how Education City Golf Club organised and delivered a very successful championship tournament, while supporting the continued growth of the game of golf in the Middle East.”

TIPS ON WHAT GARDEN TOOLS YOU’D REQUIRE

TO BRING A COUNTRY GARDEN TO THE CITY PAD OR THE OTHER WAY AROUND COUNTRY – CITY Plant seeds! Growing plants, foliage, shrubbery and trees is absolutely key if you’re looking to bring the country aesthetic into your garden. A great idea is to research the area that you’re influencing the garden on and see which plants grow there. That way you can plant the seeds and create your own ideal little

countryside. Ryobi’s 18v Cordless Seed Sprayer works with dry materials including seed, fertiliser, salt and feed, and it can distribute them at variable flow rates and to a variation of distribution area sizes.

Utilise your hedges and bushes Whether you are trimming them down, smartening them up, or styling them in a specific shape, hedges and bushes can be a real

feature in the garden and they require maintenance. In the city, you may have a smaller garden that is packed in tight within your neighbours’ outdoor spaces. A hedge could be the perfect solution for privacy, while having the greenery feel that a countryside can offer. Using Ryobi’s 18v Cordless Hedge Trimmer will allow the user to shape or cut hedges with ease.

CITY – COUNTRY Smarten up your lawns If you have big lawns and want to bring in a smarter city feel to them, it is essential to keep on top of them and make sure they are trimmed. Any overgrown or uneven grass areas can look instantly untidy, so keeping them in shape is a go-to for any city-styled garden. Ryobi’s Cordless Brushless 40cm Lawnmower has a 50L capacity, which is perfect for the bigger lawns. It also has a 40cm cutting path, which will help save a lot of time when mowing, as a bigger surface area is covered by the blades.

Patio perfection As many country gardens have a lot of different uses, from farm work to being a place for pets and animals to live, parts of the grounds can be in need of some TLC. Paving and patios can become dirty and untidy with weeds and discoloured slabs, so sprucing them up can enable them to reflect a slick city feel. Ryobi’s 18v Cordless Patio Cleaner with Wire Brush easily clears weeds and grass from between bricks and flagging, while its 18v Patio Cleaner with Scrubbing Brush can give the paving or decking a good clean and a scrub.

J PREMIER PITCH

DELIVERS ESTABLISHMENT CARDIFF CITY FC CAN RELY ON firmly in place when I joined the club. All of these years later and we wouldn’t use anything other than J Premier Pitch across our sites, for both our renovations and routine overseeding.” “With this mixture, we achieve a surface that retains good colour, consistency and deep roots - giving us the all-important wear tolerance. When the season re-started following the lockdown, fixtures were taking place thick and fast, putting the newly established pitch through its paces. Following our well-timed renovation, it delivered fantastic sward density and coverage.”

With over 13 seasons of experience using Johnsons Sports Seeds J Premier Pitch mixture, Head Groundsman at Cardiff City FC Liam James confidently conducted his renovation during the lockdown period, without doubt that the pitch would be match-fit when play resumed. In use at the Cardiff City Stadium, together with two of their other sites, the rapid establishment of J Premier Pitch has delivered a pitch that meets the Bluebirds requirements for both play quality and aesthetic appeal.

Under Liam’s remit is the Desso pitch at the main club stadium, another full size Desso and fibre-sand surface at the Cardiff International Sports Campus – home to U18’s, U23’s and Cardiff City FC Women – along with two further Desso GrassMaster systems at one of the club’s training grounds. Helping Liam with the maintenance is a team of six groundsmen, and Hewitt Sportsturf, who conduct the end of season renovations. “Our programme is thoroughly tried and tested, with Johnsons already

Like a lot of stadia, Liam struggles with shade, with some areas receiving no natural sunlight even in the peak of summer. “J Premier Pitch tolerates that really well, along with giving us great resistance to disease which means our single fungicide application is more for preventative purposes than anything else.” For a bit of additional winter strength, Liam’s regional DLF Technical Manager Ian Barnett suggested incorporating Johnsons J 4Turf into their cold season overseeding programme. Containing DLF’s 4Turf tetraploid perennial ryegrass, J 4Turf delivers rapid establishment under soil temperatures as low as 3ºC for enhanced disease resistance and strength through the cooler conditions. Liam concludes, “Getting us through the challenges we face with weather, disease and now big increases in wear, we’re fortunate that we have proven programme that we know we can rely on.”
