GARDEN DESIGN

DESIGNING A GARDEN WITH SELF-SUFFICIENCY IN MIND Having a self-sufficient garden is not a trend, it is a way of life. When designing a garden, the overall aesthetic may be a main factor, but the practicality and overall usage of the space is also of the upmost importance. Creating a garden that is specifically designed with contributing to helping the environment, protecting wildlife and providing a more sustainable way of living is particularly beneficial. Here, various design and instillation options are considered for building a garden with self-sufficiency in mind.

4

www.landud.co.uk

Growing vegetables Being able to grow vegetables is a huge part of sustainable living and should be one of the main design aspects for consideration within a self-sufficient garden. In order to prepare a space for vegetable growth, it’s important to understand the area and landscaping to hand. Whilst some gardens have an abundance of available space, others have less options, so it’s important to consider the scope of any possible vegetable patch throughout the planning phase. Whilst larger spaces

naturally provide a more fruitful growing experience, “Urban gardens” are certainly on the rise, with various design and logistics options available to those with less land to work with. If the area is limited, growing vertically is a suitable option. Consider wall-mounted growing or the installation of window boxes; doing this utilises the minimal ground space available, with plants and crops growing in an upwards trajectory.

GARDEN DESIGN

Gardens that have more space will naturally allow more scope; if crop growth is a core part of a sustainable living journey, a variety of crops will no doubt be sown at the same time. With a larger space, you’re able to position each individual crop within its most favoured position to suit its individual needs, supporting each plants prospering accordingly. Designing a garden with selfsufficiency in mind requires varying levels of tools and equipment. If you’re planning on cultivating crops, you’re going to need somewhere to safely keep your gardening kit, so it’s advisable to plan the addition of a greenhouse or shed within your original designs. The many variations of garden sheds are ideal for accommodating a sustainable space, with metal and concrete sheds for longevity and various wooden sheds for more mindful living.

Incorporate a water butt Installing a water butt in the garden is an efficient way to reduce water waste. A water butt helps to collect rainwater from the shed or roof which can then be re-used and dispensed around the garden to water crops and plants, avoiding unnecessary water consumption. If the design aesthetic of the selfsufficient garden is also a top priority, water butts aren’t always the prettiest of instillations. That being said, there are some fantastic ways to disguise the equipment; consider blending the butt in with a lick of paint, disguising it as a flower planter or even building a trellis enclosure.

Install a composter Making your own compost is a fantastic resource for reducing household waste and supporting plant and crop growth within your eco-garden. Katie Bayliss, Marketing Co-ordinator and specialist in garden sheds from GBC says, “Composting is an important part of any eco-friendly garden, it’s an easy and low-cost means of disposing of household waste whilst simultaneously creating natural nutrients for the surrounding soil. By investing time into composting, you’re able to tend to your garden in a completely self-sufficient way.” A compost heap can be comprised from everything including leaves and paper to coffee and tea, as well as all organic food waste. The resulting compost will leave your plants with healthy, nutrient-rich soil.

When designing a designated space in the garden for the composter, consider it’s positioning. By positioning the composter within an enclosed space that’s close to the house, the home inhabitants will be more likely to successfully utilise the composter on a regular basis.

Potential to extend total food production Depending on the brief when designing the garden, it may be optimal to leave space where there is the potential to extend the produce that is produced. For example, saving space for a chicken pen to be built would allow for chickens to be kept for eggs and organic meat. The inclusion of a beehive is also a popular sustainable option; keeping bees and attracting butterflies will help to pollinate the garden’s crops, as well as producing honey in the appropriate seasons. The space could even be used to grow fruit trees – all things are worth considering if possible. Developing a sustainable garden doesn’t have to be complex and the long-term benefits that a self-sufficient garden creates are endless. By implementing a range of design elements that support selfsufficiency, avid gardeners and new members alike will be able to do their bit in helping the environment.

MARK GREGORY WINS FIRST EVER BBC PEOPLE’S CHOICE

GARDEN OF THE DECADE AWARD 10

www.landud.co.uk

GARDEN DESIGN Speaking on his triumphant win, Mark Gregory said: “What an honour it is to be awarded BBC People’s Choice Garden of the Decade. I’ve built and designed gardens at Chelsea every year since 1988, which adds up to more than 3 years of my life! Not being there this year has been more than a little surreal but to win Garden of the Decade means the world. Chelsea is always a team effort and this award is for everyone involved, I’m so proud to have been a part of it and I hope this garden and the 2019 Welcome to Yorkshire garden will inspire people to visit the home county of which I’m so proud.” Mark has built a total of 99 show gardens at RHS Chelsea Flower Show since 1988. Each year, the public vote for their favourite Chelsea garden and since voting commenced last Sunday, the BBC gave those Chelsea fans the opportunity to select the very best from over the past 10 years. The 2018 garden was a realistic representation of the Yorkshire Dales, showcasing a buttercup meadow, woodland edge with native trees and cultivated cottage garden. It celebrated Yorkshire’s natural materials, traditional crafts and artisan food production. This garden was the first Welcome to Yorkshire garden to win a gold medal on main avenue. It also won Best Construction and of course the BBC People’s Choice Award. James Mason, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said:

Mark Gregory and his 2018 Welcome to Yorkshire Chelsea garden has been crowned the winner of the BBC People’s Choice Award for Garden of the Decade. Affectionately known as the ‘King of Chelsea’, the multi awardwinning garden designer and MD of Landform Consultants, had two of his gardens in the top 10, with the 2018 showpiece taking the title. “It is some achievement to win the BBC RHS People’s Choice Award from the last decade for the Yorkshire garden, especially considering the high calibre of competition. Hopefully this will be a reminder of what a picturesque part of Yorkshire Wensleydale really is. I’m delighted for the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, the Wensleydale Creamery and all the businesses in the Yorkshire Dales

who showed great support for the garden and their continued love of such a spectacular part of the world, which once again deserves to be showcased far and wide. Mark Gregory is one of the most talented garden designers in the world and we are incredibly fortunate that he just happens to be a Yorkshireman too, who had two gardens in the top ten and the overall winner. I know that the Welcome to Yorkshire team loved showcasing the county at Chelsea to visitors from across the globe. A worthy win plus a great reminder and inspiration for visitors to explore this picture postcard part of the Dales, but for now following Government guidelines considering COVID-19.” Mark is Managing Director of Landform Consultants, who were the contractors on both gardens. He has also been given the title of Vice President of The Yorkshire Society, following in the footsteps of Sir Michael Parkinson, Sir Geoff Boycott and the Archbishop of York to name just a few.

EXPERT ADVICE

EASY WAYS TO ACHIEVE A WONDERFUL WALL Jeremy Lee, Commercial Director at Bradstone, offers his expert advice on the best ways to add a finishing touch to your garden using a wall. “Quite often we see people who may have perfected their patio or showcased their green-fingers with a stunning flower bed, but require that final flourish to complete their garden. A feature such as a wall is a great way to successfully add that finishing touch, and also add some height into what otherwise might be quite a flat space. “Walls often add a sense of shape, structure and style to a garden design, and are often available in finishes to match or complement your existing patio. They can also connect different elements of your garden, by incorporating a seating area, or drawing attention to attractive features such as a built-in brick barbecue or raised herbaceous beds.

together with a suitable sealant and filled with concrete to create a stable base for a feature wall. Equally, the product can be installed to form a planter – simply infill with soil to a maximum height of 600mm to create a stunning border for your plants.”

Recommend Products: “If a garden already has a wall that needs a little TLC, rather than knocking it down and starting again, walling slips are an easy way to make it look like new. Bradstone’s natural stone walling slips simply stick to a block wall using Bradbond walling adhesive, with the Z-shaped slips fitting together to give the appearance of a random look. “Alternatively, when starting a new wall from scratch, our Easy Stack walling provides a quick, easy and cost-effective solution. The contemporary style hollow walling is extremely versatile. For a dry laid effect, the units can be bonded

GROUNDSKEEPING

RIGBY TAYLOR AND MAIDSTONE RUGBY

PITCH IN TO IMPROVE PLAYING SURFACES A week is a long time in politics, according to the idiom. But for Bob Hayton, grounds chairman at Maidstone Rugby, deciding whether to aerate or apply fertiliser, for example – or to delay either for a few days – can, he says, make all the difference to successful pitch care.

ago when, with no sports field groundscare experience but lots of enthusiasm for improved pitches spurred by his spell as a player for the rugby union club’s veterans squad, he took the reins as volunteer grounds chairman of the Kent-based club whose 1st XV competes in the London 2 South League.

“The weather can change so quickly,” he says, “so it is crucial to time any application of granular feed for when rain is forecast within a day or two. Likewise, there’s wisdom in holding back on aerating when it is very wet, whatever the size of the tractor.”

“I ‘shadowed’ my predecessor for a couple of years before I took on the role so I knew something about pitch care, including the importance of correctly timing certain maintenance routines,” says Bob, who adds:

Groundscare ‘rules’ such as these were imparted to Bob two years

“The former grounds chairman – who I actually work for and is a

16

www.landud.co.uk

successful local farmer and a great sponsor of the club – achieved great improvements to the pitches, and he impressed on me that knowing when to do things and when not is key to keeping the pitches playable and presentable. I follow his mantra of ‘the difference between a good farmer and bad one can be just a week; the trick is doing the right things at the right time’.” The three pitches are natural grass on soil, on clay, “and while there is some drainage, to be honest we are not sure where they are and what state they are in! The pitches are effectively ‘tiered’ on a sloping site next to a large car park which means we get a lot of water run off when it rains”.

Follow us @ludmagazine

GROUNDSKEEPING In the past, this water has caused major problems in terms of large patches of ‘greasy’ or ‘soft’ ground. But now, with Bob and his team of around eight volunteers steadfastly applying lots of sand in recent seasons complemented by regular aeration, “thankfully the surface water is nowhere near as bad and it doesn’t stay on the surface too long, either”.

Maidstone Rugby’s grounds chairman Bob Hayton below) and his team (left)

He continues: “The pitches are renovated each year (by Rigby Taylor) with a concerted programme of deep spiking, including Earthquaking, and they have a lot of sand applied – probably 30 tonnes over each pitch each year.” Despite this, when there is a lot of rainfall certain areas of certain pitches do still have (smaller) puddles so, says Bob, “we’re constantly aerating to a depth of four inches and handforking some areas then ‘topping’ up the sand on patches. Problems like these cannot be solved overnight, but we are getting there”. Bob’s enthusiasm for aerating and the use of sand was spurred by a visit by former Twickenham grass guru Keith Kent, as part of the RFU’s initiative to help grassroots clubs. “Keith’s very informative presentation focused on aeration and the use of the correct type of sand (round sand),” reflects Bob. “Also, the accompanying machine demonstrations really opened our eyes to the lack of equipment we had. “The input of a fellow veteran player, Martin Maytum, has also been important to the improvements we’ve made here. Martin has imparted his sports field groundscare experience – he has been in the industry for more than 30 years, beginning as a 16-year-old apprentice at Crystal Palace FC and subsequent spells at Maidstone United, Kent Police sports ground, Queens Park Rangers’ training ground and Kings Hill Sports Park. He is also a volunteer pitch advisor for the Rugby Football Union, before recently joining Rigby Taylor as the technical sales manager for this area. So, in addition to our Saturday afternoon chats about the pitches, I’m sure we’ll be sitting down for longer conversations.” Follow us @ludmagazine

Addressing the club’s equipment situation – with, for instance, a refurbished drum-type Multitiner aerator and a Quadraply, which incorporates a frame to accommodate various implements including grooming rake, spiker and slitter – Bob and his team have gone on to instigate a concerted maintenance programme that not only involves Rigby Taylor’s annual renovations but also includes amenity supplies from the company such as the use of the Sports Field Renovation seed for overseeding (on the rye grass base sward), Delta Sport super-maxi granular fertilisers and iGO line marking machine applying Impact paint.

Designed for rapid establishment, as well as showing excellent tolerance to wear, cold, shade, disease and drought, for example, Sports Field Renovation seed is a mixture of tetraploid perennial rye (the Tetragreen cultivars) and perennial ryes Columbine and Greensky, and is treated with Germin-8T which contains a speciality surfactant that is activated when the seed comes into contact with rootzone moisture. This provides effective penetration of water through the seeds’ outer layer (pericorp) into the endosperm, by lowering the surface tension of the surrounding water molecules. Roots can also take advantage of the micronised mycorryhizal fungi that will deliver long-term plant benefits.

17

GROUNDSKEEPING

One of Maidstone Rugby Club’s three pitches

The result is that at the active germination stage, each emerging seedling has immediate access to a highly beneficial package of targeted nutrients, biostimulants and micronised mycorrhizal fungi that together aid early establishment, improved root mass development and accelerated leaf extension. Derived from composted chicken litter with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium from mineral sources, Delta slow release (over six-eight weeks) fertilisers promote improved microbial activity, with the inherent carbon stimulating the

soil microbes. Bob and team use a hand spreader to apply the 12-4-8 formulation in winter and 8-6-6 in summer. “I do compare these products with others but have always found Rigby Taylor products to be effective and competitively priced,” Bob comments. Coupled with a sward height of 30 mm and a dedicated approach by the team of volunteers, the pitches hold up well to their constant use by the 500 or so club members

comprising four senior men’s teams as well as youth and mini sections covering age groups from U7s to U18s: two of the three pitches are in action every Saturday and Sunday. “One of the main bugbears is to ensure spectators actually stand behind the touchlines,” adds Bob. “People standing in a concentrated area can often do more damage than the players!”

MICRO IRRIGATION

MICRO IRRIGATION

FOR TODAY’S LANDSCAPES Fixed or Adjustable Micro Watering Devices – that is the question for micro irrigation for today’s Landscapes Today’s landscape gardens are as diverse and individual as the UK’s landscape itself. Micro irrigation in the form of drip and low volume micro spray is seen as an effective irrigation method to maintain and grow these landscape gardens. Sometimes as irrigation professionals we focus on commercial outcomes for landscape gardens which may not be an ideal solution. A point in question is the use of fixed volume drippers either standard or pressure compensating exclusively in a landscape garden. Plants in a landscape garden are varying by size, type and subsequently their water usage, whereas in a commercial horticultural application such as a vineyard or orchard the plant variation is less and uniform watering is the prime driver. It makes sense to provide precise and uniform amounts of water to these commercial enterprises. For the landscapers however flexibility in their watering systems can be required and therefore adjustable watering devices are popular.

Potstream™ by Antelco The new watering standard for potted plants

20

MICRO IRRIGATION The general categories of micro irrigation devices available to the landscape gardener meet the 2 LPH to 120 LPH requirements: Type Fixed Flow Drip (Pinch™, CETA®, Asta®, Midi Drip™) General Operation Provides a consistent point source flow rate e.g. 2, 4, or 8 lph are common. Uses Native plants with lower water usage requirements. Type Adjustable Flow Drip (Shrubbler®) General Operation Provides flow and coverage adjustment by turning the top from 0 to 50 lph. Covers an area with the streams of up to 0.8m diameter. Uses General garden use where plants water requirements may vary over time. Type Adjustable Bubbler (Mini Bubbler) General Operation Provides flow and coverage adjustment by turning the top from 0 to 120 lph. Covers an area of up to 0.5m Dia. Uses Good where deep watering is required. Often used for citrus, stone fruits and larger trees. Type Micro Sprays Adjustable (Vari-Jets™)

Generally, all types of micro irrigation, when correctly applied are efficient in watering. It should be noted that during hose pipe bans, micro irrigation sprays are exempt from restriction as well as drip, so long as a timer is used. This is something that should be considered for local water restrictions when they are next applied. Authorities generally restrict the watering windows to a reduced number of days per week. An adjustable micro irrigation system means the application rate can be tuned to enable efficient watering within the available time window. As an irrigation professional when providing advice to gardeners it is important to offer product that is fit for purpose for their gardens as well as recommending the appropriate ancillary equipment such as pressure regulators and filters at the start of the systems. There are benefits in providing adjustable micro irrigation watering devices to landscape gardens: • Water application can be “tuned” to individual plant or micro climate zone requirements. • Varying application rates to suit soil conditions. • The watering coverage of sprays improves the look and feel of the garden. • The system can be varied over time to suit the changing needs of the garden. An added advantage of adjustable micro irrigation devices is that the majority of them can be viewed, dismantled and cleaned if blockages occur.

The Micro Irrigation Specialists

General Operation Provides a range of flows that vary from 0-100 lph. User friendly knob fitted to the base allows for adjustment. Uses Used for ground covers and flowering beds where watering down improves the aesthetics of the garden. Type Adjustable Spray 360 (Spectrum™) General Operation Provides flow and coverage adjustment by turning top from 0 to 80 lph. Covers an area of up to 4m diameter. Uses Used for ground covers and flowering beds where watering down improves the aesthetics of the garden.

FOURFOLD SALES INCREASE

FOR NEW GREENWORKS BATTERY-POWERED MOWER Interchangeable batteries for garden equipment: a good idea in theory, but what if the batteries are too heavy? When gardeners reported they were finding the 48v rechargeable batteries used to power domestic lawnmowers too heavy for their hand-held line-trimmers and hedge cutters and that the weight was significantly reducing manoeuvrability, engineers at Greenworks came up with the novel solution that has proved to be a major success story for 2020. Instead of looking at the heavier, one-size-fits-all 48v battery, these engineers created the same power using two smaller and lighter 24v batteries – ideal for lawnmowers. – with just one needed to power the 24 v line trimmers and hedge cutters.

22

www.landud.co.uk

When the concept was launched as a £199 package at the start of the UK season, it immediately swept the board and sales increased fourfold in just six weeks. Additional production was rushed in from Greenworks’ Chinese headquarters and these are also flying off the shelves. “Our 2 x 24v system has been phenomenally success,” says Mark Moseley, sales and marketing director for Greenworks UK. “Women and older people are increasingly using line-trimmers and hedge cutters and the smaller, lighter battery is a winner in all ways. Manoeuvrability is essential when hedge cutting or strimming under trees and hedges but the greater power of 48v is needed when mowing. This is the answer to both.”

TOOLS, PLANT & EQUIPMENT

ADVICE ON MAINTAINING A MINI EXCAVATOR In the past decade, compact excavators have become more and more advanced allowing them to become the favoured workhorse of the working man on job sites. Whether you’ve hired one or bought it outright, it’s a big expense and you expect it to do the job. In the current economic landscape operators will need to make sure that the efficiency matches the expense of the vehicle. This helps identify whether or not the excavator is a good fit for the suitor. No one wants to experience a problem with their equipment, especially during a time-sensitive project, therefore Apton Plant have devised these helpful tips to help keep on top of your machinery worries.

Inspecting the Cooling System on a Regular Basis A competent cooling system has to have a suitable airflow rate at a good coolant level. If either is unbalanced or lacking, it can ruin the performance, become overheated or even shorten the lifespan of the engine. The best cooling system maintenance involves making sure there is airflow through the system and checking cooling hoses for discharge. Coolant or oil leaks may be responsible for causing a buildup of debris in the future which will limit the flow of air, therefore becoming an insulator and lowering heat exchange. The best way to clean the radiator, air cooler or condenser is to apply low-pressure air or water to them. Be sure to use care and not damage the radiator fins, as these are important and may break if you’re not careful.

Daily Inspection of Fluids and Lubricants A proactive maintenance routine starts with a day-to-day checkup of fluids such as coolant and hydraulic/

24

www.landud.co.uk

engine oil. If any of these levels are abnormal or low, make sure to top up with manufacturer-approved and oil and pay close attention to categorisations. It’s also very important to make sure these parts are cleaned by using clean rags whilst checking levels to avoid contamination. It’s also necessary to oil the machine at precise intervals, taking into consideration that the appliance and condition of the machine will need to be at an operational level. Manufacturers, more often than not, usually advise the use of a high-quality grease to apply to all of the main pivot points, such as dipper, bucket and ball pins. Using the right amount of lubrication is paramount for extending the life of plant equipment, however using too much grease can also be responsible for environmental and fire safety hazards

General Cleaning and Maintenance The excavator should be cleaned and washed on a regular basis as cleaning the exterior is a simple task that can be done by washing with high-pressure water or steam cleaning. This not only helps it stay presentable but also keeps unwanted mud and dirt from getting near the vital vehicle components. The cockpit should also be frequently cleaned. Safety notifications should be visible at all times and not concealed by miscellaneous items, dust or debris. It’s important to check the steps of the vehicle to ensure they are not loose or broken and to prevent any accidents that might be associated with them.

GROUNDSKEEPING

CHARTERHOUSE KIT HELPS GLASGOW ACADEMY

TACKLE BOTH NATURAL & SYNTHETIC MAINTENANCE a combination of a Charterhouse slitter and Verti-Drain®.” Upgrading their machine roughly every seven years, Robert’s latest model – the 7521 – was delivered by local dealer Hamilton Brothers. “It was the 2.1m working width and the range of tine options that really appealed with the 7521. We can go out with solid tines working at depths of up to 16” through the winter months alongside our slitter, then incorporate.some hollow coring between March and September. This gives us ultimate flexibility to react to ground conditions and adjust penetration and heave accordingly.” By keeping on top of routine maintenance, Robert has also been impressed with the reliability of the Verti-Drain®. “They’re well-built and easy to operate and maintain – with all of our Verti-Drain’s® we’ve never had any issues with breakdowns.”

With a fleet of natural and synthetic machinery from Charterhouse Turf Machinery, Head Groundsman Robert Cheape is well equipped to maintain the four separate sites that make up The Glasgow Academy. He has recently taken delivery of his third Verti-Drain®, a 7521, for the regular aeration of the eight grass rugby pitches, while an X-treme Clean is ensuring the playability and safety of their four artificial surfaces.

With facilities for cricket, ladies and men’s hockey and tennis, it is the rugby section that is best known – with Glasgow Academicals RFC celebrating their 150th anniversary in the 2016-17 season. “Our rugby pitches see a lot of play, from both external clubs and the 1400 pupils of the academy” explains Robert, who has been at the school for 36 years. “Weather permitting, we carry out aeration once a month, and for over 20 years that’s been with

On the club’s two full-size astro hockey pitches, together with their two ¾ size MUGA surfaces, it’s a trusty combination of brushes from the Charterhouse synthetic collection used alongside the X-treme Clean 1200. “We brush once a week and then follow up with a monthly pass of the X-treme Clean.” Using horizontally rotating brushes, the X-treme Clean lifts the pile and agitates the infill - removing dirt, debris and compaction. “As with all of our Charterhouse kit, it’s efficient, reliable and does exactly what you want it to. We’ve used it for years and will be happy to do so for many more to come.”

TURF

BIOSTIMULANT SUPPORTS SUCCESSFUL TURF ESTABLISHMENT Creating healthy, resilient turf in areas of high aesthetic value will now be improved, thanks to a biostimulant aimed specifically at the establishment of new turf. Launched this spring, Tonivit® activates root growth & activity, nutrient uptake and tillering, to quickly establish a stronger sward for newly seeded and re-seeded areas, or newly laid turf. Business Development Manager UK & Ireland for Speciality and Amenity Crops at UPL UK, Stephen Olive, said: “The effect of Tonivit on emergence speed is demonstrated through trials, which have shown that newlysown leys treated with the product reach 70% sward density three weeks earlier than those untreated. The product is also effective on newly laid turf. “That’s great news for if you’re wanting to create lush green spaces quickly, in areas of high aesthetic value. And because the turf has an improved health status, it will be resilient to potential traffic during its early stages, which will be more prevalent in built-up or urban environments.” Tonivit contains oligosaccharides - naturally produced complex sugars extracted from seaweed, with the addition of phosphorus and potassium. These sugars are beneficial for turf establishment because they stimulate plant reductases, which increase nutrient and water translocation and therefore boost health and ultimately yield. Follow us @ludmagazine

Mr Olive added: “Tonivit is manufactured to the same standard as our traditional crop protection products, and is highly concentrated thanks to the development of a refined cold-press extraction process at our manufacturing plant in St. Malo, France. “This means the application rate is just 1L/ha, which is an added bonus, as it’s speedier to apply and less product to handle. “Interest has rapidly grown in seaweed-based biostimulant products such as Tonivit, particularly

in the amenity turf sector. And it’s no wonder – they’re a natural and sustainable alternative that offer simple cost effective benefits. Tonivit was launched by Arysta LifeScience in February. Arysta LifeScience is now part of UPL, creating a new leader in global agriculture.

GROUNDSKEEPING

CARNOUSTIE GOLF LINKS

ANNOUNCES JOHN DEERE PARTNERSHIP Carnoustie Golf Links Chief Executive Michael Wells announced today that a strategic partnership with John Deere has been secured, following a detailed period of exclusive discussions between the two organisations, whose joint vision laid the groundwork for today’s announcement. The formalisation of the partnership will harmonise flagship greenkeeping practices with leading technology and R&D, as this alliance looks to lead the conversation in sustainability and best practice in golf course maintenance. For both organisations, this important development will further enhance their significant independent successes in this area and combine two leading industry names to maximise opportunities and aid innovation. For staff in each organisation, this will also see significant value investments designed to create

30

new professional development and learning opportunities, in addition to supporting a wide range of charitable and apprenticeship programmes, including Carnoustie’s 250-strong junior golf development hub The Carnoustie Craws. Today’s announcement is a meaningful new chapter in Carnoustie’s story and sees the merging of two historic organisations. Carnoustie held the first of its eight Open Championships in 1931, but it was long before this that a great many young clubmakers, golf professionals and greenkeepers (known as The Carnoustie 300) left Carnoustie to take golf worldwide, helping to change the face of the game forever. This eight-time Open Championship venue is known for delivering change in the game of golf and is held by many to be the ancestral home of American and Australian golf.

“Our goal was to conceive a partnership based on shared values that went well beyond the provision of greenkeeping equipment,” said Carnoustie Golf Links Chief Executive Michael Wells. “Carnoustie and John Deere can now work together to lead the conversation as the golf industry looks to modernise its approach to golf course management, with a partnership that will focus on innovation and development.” John Deere’s European Golf & Turf Sales and Marketing Manager Carlos Aragones added: “John Deere is fully committed to the manufacture and support of advanced, high quality equipment for the world’s best golf courses. We will be honoured to see our machinery at work on the Championship, Burnside and Buddon Links Courses at Carnoustie Golf Links, and look forward to establishing a close and fruitful partnership with this historic club.”

BOUND SURFACING

THE HISTORIC HITCHIN MARKET

PAVING REFURBISHMENT AND REPOINTING PROJECT In talking to Local Authority Engineers recently, it has become very clear that the information in an independent Investigative Report, which was made following a detailed 8 year durability evaluation and with site inspections by the team from Paving Expert.com that was carried out approximately 2 years ago in 2017, would be of tremendous assistance to ALL Town and City Councils, District and other Unitary Authorities around this country. The Historic Hitchin Market paving refurbishment and repointing project using GftK’s vdw 850 plus Paving Joint Mortar was now carried out after extensive evaluations and field testing for 12 months by the responsible engineers, completed 10 years ago, and just as in the inspection two years ago, in 2019 after 10 years service, it is still look good, performing in all weather conditions and under frequent heavy trafficking of this busy market square!

‘After 8 years it looks like it was jointed yesterday!’ - These were the words from www.PavingExpert. com when they visited to inspect the paving refurbishment that they had last witnessed underway on the site eight years ago, when the traditional granite sett paving of the historic Hitchin Market Square in Hertfordshire, was refurbished and repointed with GftK’s vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar. The expert continues: ‘Oh yes - The paving had been patched and pointed, re-pointed and grouted, glued and all sorts over the years, but nothing lasted long. They might get a couple of years, but before you knew it, the setts were a rocking and rolling all over again. Faced with the prospect of having to lift and re-lay the whole square, at huge cost, the Local Authority and their Consultants undertook some tests and decided to have one last roll of the dice with what looked like a very promising product: VDW 850 resin jointing mortar by NCC Streetscape.’

The Hitchin Town Centre Paving Refurbishment Inspection Report in full can be viewed http://www. pavingexpert.com/point_ncc06.htm

Like many old town centres and market squares, this is now a very different and demanding environment for paving and

34

www.landud.co.uk

particularly the pointing, due to multiple heavy duty loadings and all sorts of modern traffic exposure, plus frequent mechanical street cleaning etc. However, working in phases, without closing the market, this project was completed on time and on budget, because work could continue and be completed using GftK’s vdw 850. This unique paving joint mortar is based on graded, water dispersed, epoxy resin coated and bound, alluvial, no-fines quartz sand. No-fines means no-dust produced in mixing either - very important for occupied streets with people and businesses continuing to work. Just as the contractor can continue to work, even despite the wet weather and low temperatures throughout, which would have made any cement based or single-pack paving pointing mortar useless and doomed to failure. Today after now 10 Years, the historic market paving is still looking great, a valuable asset to the Town; most importantly it will also continue to do so!

PUBLIC MAINTENANCE

CARE OF PARKS AND OUTDOOR AREAS

BY DANIEL TOOK, HEAD OF PROFESSIONAL PRODUCT MARKETING FOR KARCHER UK Taking care of parks and outdoor areas is a mammoth task for local authorities and service providers. Lawns must be cared for, weeds managed, paths and parking areas maintained, all making flexible, tailored equipment imperative.

Weed killing Weeds should be deprived of their breeding ground to prevent spread. Pollen settles in dust and dirt, leading to dandelions, thistles, etc. Regular sweeping is the most effective prevention method, but the work should be timed around the grass growth season. If surfaces are well-swept, fine dust pollution is also reduced, but the frequency required can impact personnel and machine costs. If regular sweeping is not possible, there are other ways to prevents weeds without chemicals. If weeds are still small, hot air is appropriate. Air is heated to 450°C via a gas burner, and the plants are literally dried up. Handheld appliances or attachments for municipal machines are available, but only to be used if no fire hazard exists for adjacent greenery or wooded areas.

Hot water can be used for taller plants. Heated up to temperatures of up to 99°C it develops a certain depth effect down to the root, destroying the plant. Similarly, steam can be used, but does not penetrate to the root, so requires repetition. These methods are ideal for water-bound paths, such as gravel, where sweepers cannot be used.

36

www.landud.co.uk

Well-established weeds with deep roots, really require the mechanical performance of a sweeper with a weed brush. This functions independently of the composition of the underlying surface, but brush arms and the connection between attachment and vehicle must be resilient.

Follow us @ludmagazine

PUBLIC MAINTENANCE

Green areas When lawns take up a lot of space it is important not to mow too low. Leaves on the blades of grass transport moisture from root to tip and without them, the grass dies. Rotary mowers are often used and are well suited for park areas, roadside greenery, sports fields and playgrounds, as they have a high area capacity and offer an adjustable cutting height. Front mowers are agile and offer a good view of the attached appliance. The mowing deck is easily accessible and quick to assemble. Medium mowers are ideal because of their unchanged driving characteristics with a mounted deck and the shortness of the system. Straight cutting marks are far easier to implement. Lawn sweeping machines pick up the cuttings from the ground via a roller and throw them up overhead into a container. Grass suction devices are connected to the mower and suction off the cuttings into the waste container using a vacuum blower. To maintain borders, trees and bushes, battery-powered handheld devices are best. Battery-powered brush cutters, chain saws, leaf blowers and hedge cutters are up to 50 percent less noisy and do not release any emissions. They also generate up to 80 percent fewer vibrations, depending on the manufacturer, making handling Follow us @ludmagazine

easier and less stressful for the blood circulation. They are also compact, making precise work easy in narrow, winding areas.

Sweeping in outdoor areas Sweeping is not just sweeping. The choice of machine and accessories must suit the underlying surface, type of dirt and size of the area or paths. The classic riding sweeper suits individual areas such as car parks, open-air swimming pools or outdoor areas around multi-purpose halls. The side brush sweeps edges and corners and the collected street dirt is absorbed by the main sweeping roller. Whether the machines are batteryoperated or driven by LPG, petrol or diesel depends on the application area. Smaller areas can be managed with battery-operated machines.

Municipal or vacuum sweepers sweep the dirt together via side brushes, after which it is absorbed by the suction nozzle. Larger areas can be processed rapidly and longer distances in road traffic are manageable with driving speeds of up to 40 km/h. Municipal machines are suitable all for seasons, as the cab provides driver comforts such as air conditioning. The more flexibly accessories and appliances can be combined for a specific fleet, the more efficiently outdoor spaces can be managed all year round.

TILERS TOOLS RISES TO THE CHALLENGE

TO CREATE A COMPLETE LANDSCAPE INSTALLATION SYSTEM As winner of the Service Provider of the Year last year from The Association of Professional Landscapers, the team at Tilers Tools continued to have lots of contact with their friends in the landscape profession and were still holding training days until CV-19 put them on stop temporarily. Invariably during the discussions, the topic of the best way to install porcelain was always the subject for lively debate and it was clear there was no standout system. Well, there was a challenge that the team at Tilers Tools just couldn’t ignore. Come up with a stand-out installation system. They set out to discover what landscape professionals were looking for, then visited a number of manufacturers of adhesives and grouts. Tilers Tools quickly settled on two manufacturers, one to formulate the hybrid cement mortar mix and the primer which works with it and the other manufacturer to produce high quality grout that can be used in heavily trafficked areas.

38

www.landud.co.uk

The formulations went through extensive testing and tweaking in the laboratories to settle upon the very best system – in the laboratory. But the real tests could only be done on site. The first test of the mortar mix and primer on site took place on an outdoor area being created by Chris at Sandstone Supplies. Chris has many years’ experience as a landscaper so his input was invaluable. The test went extremely well, but there were still a couple of improvements to be made. Then the products were ready for real-life testing and a couple of very capable landscapers, Paul at Signature Landscapes and Craig at Taylor’d Landscaping, and their clients, volunteered to be guinea-pigs. Following very positive feedback, the test was rolled out. Over the months since testing began, the products have been given a resounding thumbs-up from everyone using it. A guaranteed system, simple to use, which holds up well and forms a solid monolithic bond between flags, mortar and sub-base and delivers these benefits in an economic way was clearly going to be a winner.

The grout, Part C, is first class too. The grout is hybrid resin cement based but with a formulation that ensures it is UV solid, has flexibility to resist cracking, can be used on joints up to 20mm wide, is waterresistant and can be used in areas subject to heavy traffic. It’s simple to apply and easy to clean off. The FUGA-PAVE Flex CH grout comes in the five most popular colours, light grey, medium grey, anthracite, Jasmin and limestone. The FUGA-PAVE ABC system is so versatile. While it was designed with porcelain flags in mind, ABC is also suitable when installing natural stone and cementitious products, including blocks and pavers. Part A, the hybrid cement can be used with building sand as a strong mortar when building walls. Why would you specify anything else? Look out for FUGA-PAVE ABC at your local landscape supplier.

FUGA-PAVE ABC

SUPER REVIEWS FOR A NEW MORTAR, PRIMER AND GROUT SYSTEM A guaranteed installation system that delivers substantial improvements over traditional sand and cement, at no extra cost. No wonder professional landscapers and their suppliers are excited about FUGA-PAVE ABC. Tilers Tools (a division of Aquacut Limited) has announced the launch of a cost-effective, but powerful system that can be used for installing porcelain, stone or cementitious products. While delivering a number of benefits over traditional sand plus cement plus additives methods, FUGAPAVE Parts A & B gives valuable improvements for no greater cost than sand plus cement installations. Tilers Tools has a reputation for working closely with the landscape community – they have held a series of demonstration and ‘how-to’ days throughout the country and are often approached for advice with regard to installation techniques, tools, equipment and consumables. As 20mm thick porcelain is specified more and more, the team at Tilers Tools were increasingly asked to recommend the best installation techniques. Tilers Tools picked up the challenge to develop a system designed for professional landscapers whether installing porcelain, natural stone or cementitious products in landscapes and hardscapes. The folks at Tilers Tools approached adhesives manufacturers with a list of attributes they insisted that Parts A and B, (hybrid cement and primer) must have. These included; • Economic – the cost should be no more than existing sand plus cement techniques

40

www.landud.co.uk

• Easy to mix – hybrid cement mixes with grit sand and water (6:1, sand:hybrid cement), for the primer just mix with water • Easy to use – creamy texture, hold the flag well, must not ooze through the joints • Good pot life • Water based – so easy to clean up • Can be used on porcelain, natural stone and cementitious flags • Permeable but very hard bed – particularly important when laying porous stone and cementbased flags

• Strong bond between substrate and mortar, and mortar and flags • Comes in weatherproof bags, so can be stored outside on site • The hybrid cement can be mixed with builders’ sand for use as a strong mortar for brick walls The hybrid cement has been formulated to be laid on a compacted bed 100-150mm thick. The mortar applied at least 25mm thick, acts alongside the primer to give a powerful monolithic bond that really grabs the flags in a similar way as a tile adhesive on steroids would.

CONCRETE & STONEWORK

The grout also had specific requirements, including; • Easy to apply and wash off at installation • Smooth grain which resists slumping, giving a nice flat finish that avoids detritus gathering in the joints • Simple maintenance – capable of preserving that ‘just-installed’ look • UV resistant – important to avoid colour fading • antibacterial, - the grout has natural antibacterial properties • strong but flexible – the grout can flex to avoid cracking • hard-wearing enough to be used in heavily trafficked areas, • water-repellent – passes the drop water test which is important when installing porcelain to avoid water pooling under the flag • suitable for grout joints up to 20mm wide

• available in a range of the five most popular colours; light grey, medium grey, anthracite, Jasmin and limestone After months of working with scientists based at adhesives manufacturers and following rigorous testing, FUGA-PAVE ABC’s formulation was finalised. Professional landscapers who have trialled the system have given FUGA-PAVE ABC a resounding thumbs-up. The ABC system passes the demanding requirements to create a first-class installation system specially formulated for landscape professionals. Landscape suppliers throughout the UK are switched on to the qualities of the products and are signing up to stock and sell FUGA-PAVE ABC, so landscapers ought to be able to source the system locally.

HERITAGE SQUARE BIN FOR ON-STREET RECYCLING With more than six out of ten of us now describing ourselves as ‘committed recyclers’ on-street recycling needs to gain apace to meet public needs. To help in this process that turns a waste liability into valuable assets, Leafield Environmental is launching its new Square Heritage Recycling bin range to assist waste stream segregation ‘in the street’. Proven and popular with Local Authorities, Parish Councils and urban landscape designers alike, the Heritage Square Bin can now be designated for the collection of specific recyclate streams. WRAP compliant, colour coded inserts with their ‘propeller’ apertures, along with explicit colour coded graphics, help identify the specific waste that should be deposited. Apertures can also be blanked off for bins to be used against walls. One of the most durable bins available, thanks to the double wall construction throughout the entire bin, the Heritage Square’s outer walls now sport ridges to prevent unwanted fly posting. With a 110 litre capacity, diagonal hinged, slam-shut door for easy access, (no lifting required), the Heritage Square Recycling Bin will help meet the need for onstreet recycling for many years to come.

Winner of the Virtual Visitor Vote, with an astonishing 306 votes (33% of the total) was Anemone FP007 ‘Frilly Knickers’ from Fairweather’s Nursery. Head Judge, Matthew Biggs, said: “We were overwhelmed by the response to our call for entries to the New Plant Awards this year, especially when the industry is facing such difficulties. It is testament to the hard work and resilience of our UK growers that they have stepped up to the challenge and presented some wonderful new plants for us all to enjoy. We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Frank

P Matthews and Fairweather’s Nursery for producing the overall winners, and our heartfelt thanks to everyone who entered.” HTA President, Boyd Douglas-Davis said: “The Virtual New Plant Awards have been a huge success. We made a relatively late decision to run the Awards as a virtual event and weren’t at all sure what level of interest we would get, but we could not be more thrilled with the response we’ve had. We hope the event provides a much-needed boost for our growers and earns them some well deserved publicity for their plants and businesses.” Follow us @ludmagazine

GARDEN WILDLIFE B&DWH - A wildlife friendly show home garden with an insect habitat

HOW TO BUILD A HOME FOR UK WILDLIFE

ACCORDING TO LEADING MERSEYSIDE HOUSEBUILDER AND THE RSPB With the warm weather set to continue, now is the perfect time to get busy in the garden. Inspired by their national partnership with the RSPB, Barratt and David Wilson Homes has shared some tips on how to create the very best garden for UK wildlife. Philippa Stewart, Sales Director for Barratt and David Wilson Homes North West, said: “We are committed to ensuring our developments are as wildlife friendly as they can be

52

www.landud.co.uk

and now with lockdown in full swing we’re sharing some guidance in order to give people some fun activities to do and lend a hand to wildlife in the process”

1. Get to know your garden birds

Charlotte Ambrose, RSPB Wildlife Advisor said: “Gardens and the wildlife they attract can be a source of joy and comfort even in the most difficult times. Right now, we need to take that joy and comfort where we find it, and nature provides it in bucket (trowel) loads. “

With many of us spending more time at home, attracting birds into your garden with feeders or a source of fresh, clean water will help you get to know your garden birds. Only feed selected foods at this time of year, such as sunflower seeds, pinhead oatmeal or special mixes for birds that feed mainly on insects.

The RSPB has comprised the following easy tips to utilise your garden space:

GARDEN WILDLIFE

Remember, good hygiene is vital, or feeding may do more harm than good. Find out more about feeding your garden birds at Join in with the RSPB’s #BreakfastBirdwatch to share your sightings.

2. Sow some seeds for bees It’s not too late to start growing flowering plants from seeds such as cornflowers, marigolds and poppies to help provide bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects with a much needed food source – and your garden with an extra splash of colour. When the bees and butterflies started buzzing and fluttering around the flowers they will help bring the whole place to life.

spring cleaning. Of course we like our gardens to look beautiful, but if you can leave bits undisturbed and wild, you will be rewarded with wildlife that might not otherwise find a place to stay. That unkempt hedge could well have birds nesting in it by now, and the pile of leaves in the corner is perfect for visiting hedgehogs. Philippa added: “We at Barratt and David Wilson Homes often provide wild seed packs to our residents to grow a slice of UK countryside in their otherwise modern gardens. Our feedback is great and residents soon begin to see an increase in all kinds of wildlife.”

4. Breathe 3. Let it grow Now is the time when people usually start venturing into the garden after the winter and start tidying up – the gardeners equivalent of

Whether you just have a window box planted with lavender or a garden full of trees, shrubs and flowers, take some time to breathe it in. Sit back, relax, watch and listen

to the wildlife you have invited to share your little patch of greenery with you. Philippa added: “Making small adjustments to gardens in urban or suburban environments creates extremely valuable wild spaces. Our properties often have versatile gardens that can host more friendly residents than meets the eye.”

CREATE A USEABLE LIVING SPACE BELOW YOUR DECK

WITH REVOLUTIONARY TREX RAINESCAPE® The new Trex RainEscape® system allows homeowners and developers to maximise outdoor living environments and create the dream space. Trex RainEscape deck drainage system manages water to allow for a dry, useable space beneath an elevated deck. Installed above the joists of the substructure, this innovative system features a trough and downspout construction that drains water away from a deck and protects the area below from rain, sun, snow melt and other elements. As a result, homeowners gain bonus space for storage or added living area. With Trex RainEscape, homeowners can safely outfit the area under a deck with outdoor furnishings, lighting, ceiling fans and entertainment components.

54

www.landud.co.uk

“Trex RainEscape is ideally suited to the often wet UK climate,” noted Adam Zambanini, vice president of marketing for Trex Company. “With this simple system, homeowners can create a useable patio area below their deck where they can enjoy their gardens in all seasons and weather.” Unlike competitive products – which make use of “under joist” technology – Trex RainEscape is installed above the joists, protecting them from moisture, water damage and deterioration that may occur over time and ensuring the structural integrity of the deck. The system is easy and efficient to install on both new and existing decks – making it an ideal solution for both contractors and do-it-yourselfers.

The Trex RainEscape system is an easy and inexpensive addition to any elevated deck. Components include a 3.66m and 4.88m drainage trough sheet, a down spout, butyl waterproof caulk, 102mm x 15.24m butyl waterproof tape, 102mm x 102mm post flash, and 3.2mm x 25.4mm x 7.6m wall flash. Furthermore, only three tools – scissors or a utility knife, a staple gun hammer and a caulk gun – are required for installation. For even more peace of mind, Trex RainEscape is backed by a 20-year Limited Warranty.

GARDEN DESIGN

TRANSFORM YOUR OUTSIDE SPACE You can use the space for al fresco dining, as a tranquil reading nook, somewhere to enjoy time with family, or to enjoy an evening tipple at sunset. With a few Scandi design touches, even the smallest outdoor space can be transformed. Whether you have a patio, balcony or garden, there are several easy ways to create a stylish space on a budget. From updating the garden shed or creating a small seating area, to adding potted plants or utilising a corner of the garden, here, lifestyle expert at Contura, Catharina Björkman, gives her simple Scandi design tips for transforming your outside space. “In Sweden, we spend a lot of time outdoors, says Catharina. “Especially in summer, when daylight hours are longer, and evenings are warmer. There are numerous benefits to being out in the fresh air, and by creating a secluded outside retreat you can immerse yourself in nature whilst still enjoying the comfort of your own private space. “Treat your secluded spot as a digital-free zone and as somewhere to relax and de-stress away from gadgets and screens; this is crucial to boost happiness and wellbeing. For the design, look to Scandi interior inspiration and embrace the principles of lagom for a sense of balance. Think minimalist furniture, plants, faux-fur throws, bunting and soft lighting.” Read on for Catharina’s full tips.

Choose your spot Lifestyle expert at Contura provides a guide on how to create an attractive and peaceful Scandi-styled garden, patio or balcony retreat for a soothing break from the indoors

56

www.landud.co.uk

One of life’s simplest pleasures is enjoying time outdoors, so if you’re lucky enough to have an outside space, why not consider creating a secluded Scandi-style retreat?

Ideally, choose an area that catches the sun for the best light. Next, clearly define the space using the seating, flooring or large pots, as this will give the area structure and a definite ‘extra room’ feel. If you are

Follow us @ludmagazine

GARDEN DESIGN

using a wall or garden fence, you could add artwork (metal or stone is best to withstand the elements) to further enhance the feeling of an extra room. Don’t forget to add some form of shade for hot days; a canvas awning or sail shade are inexpensive, yet stylish options.

Patio or paved area If your garden is paved or has a patio, consider creating a cosy nook in a sunny corner. Wooden crates or pallets are an affordable way to create a seating area. Add plenty of Scandi cushions, throws and candle holders for evening lighting to create the right ambience. Pot plants will add greenery and instantly transform a paved area. And why not add a hammock to a corner as a fun place to enjoy some evening reading?

Transform the shed The humble garden shed can be easily updated to create a Scandi retreat, but this does mean you can’t use the shed for storage. Firstly, deep clean the shed to get rid of any dust and cobwebs, and clean the windows, inside and out. Paint the walls bright white, hang bunting and fairy lights, and add seating (bean bags or garden chairs) together with cosy throws or cushions. The garden shed will become a place you never want to leave.

Follow us @ludmagazine

Upcycling furniture You don’t need to spend a fortune on outdoor furniture. In fact, achieving a shabby-chic Scandi look is all about using second-hand or upcycled items wherever possible. Wooden crates make excellent coffee tables, sand down and repaint any old garden furniture, and look for second-hand decorative items such as lanterns or rugs. You could make your own bunting and soft furnishings (such as cushions and throws) and design your own artwork if you’re a keen crafter.

Lighting Soft lighting is a key principle of Scandi design; it’s all about creating the right ambience and being enveloped in a soft glow, rather than using harsh or bright lights. Strings of fairy or festoon lights, draped artfully, provide a subtle yet stylish back drop. Add candles to the table and choose an array of candle sizes and styles, avoiding anything too matchy-matchy. You can also get outdoor solar-powered fairy lights, which come on automatically when it gets dark and will glow for several hours.

Design touches In Scandi design there is a strong relationship between design elements and nature, driven by the many Nordic forests and abundance of green spaces. All materials used in your Scandi retreat should include

elements of the natural world throughout, such as wood, woven/ jute rugs, rattan and wicker furniture, faux-fur throws, cotton, stone, leather and linen. Keep colours muted and neutral, such as whites, greys and beiges, as these won’t overpower the final look. You can add accents of colour in soft furnishings and artwork as a subtle hint.

Update a balcony Adding fairy lights, a small table and chairs, candles and bunting will make your balcony the envy of your neighbours. Pot plants can give an inexpensive yet instant uplift and make you feel more immersed in nature. Stick with hardy, easy-to care-varieties, such as ivy, cactus, ferns and succulents. Get creative with how you style your plants; an old step ladder can provide great shelving to display plants in a stylish way, for example. You can also grow culinary herbs (rosemary, mint and sage) on a sunny balcony in zinc pots, which look decorative and are useful for cooking.

Richard Mosson, James Latham’s Group Cladding and Decking Manager commented, “This is a true premium quality product and one that ticks all the boxes for us. As well as its impressive environmental credentials, it offers choice in style, consistency in performance and clean, cutting-edge design.

“With 10 years of continued investment and R&D, the quality of the UPM ProFi deck range is exceptional.
