Smarter Sections

Make Better Drawings

Section planes now have names and symbols, making them easy to find and organise. Filled section cuts are now baked into SketchUp Pro! There is also improved performance for models that use section planes to hide a large amount of geometry. The more geometry you section off, the more you'll benefit!

Need to add linework that's not in your model? Create a scaled drawing in LayOut and sketch over a 3D model to flesh out your project, or draw from details to scale directly in LayOut. With inferencing, chamfering and filleting, arcs, offset arrays and selections; LayOut is even better at everything you need to draw details or create beautiful illustrations at scale.

Got BIM? There’s more!

We’ve introduced Advanced Attribute fields for a component's Price, Size, URL, Type Status and Owner. Generate Report now aggregates component data so you can do things like configure reports to sum parts and quantities and cutlists, or create detailed estimates by adding up prices by layer. You can rely on IFC in SketchUp to transfer the attributes you assign and manipulate in projects, allowing for information to move freely between SketchUp and other applications.

• Import DWG files into LayOut

• Native support for importing and exporting STL files

• Multi Viewport Dimensioning

• Improvement to Outliner's overall load performance

interview is with Joe Taylor, Designer at Octagon.

The brief for this South West London family garden was to provide a space for dining and relaxation.

Roger Webster has been running his garden design practice from Exeter for over twenty years, with projects across Devon and the Southwest.

While preparing for Autumn, the garden remains at the heart of family life for hosting BBQs, garden parties and family events.

The client had recently purchased this 1930s detached house in London that needed an internal make-over and updating.

developments?

through to the green space design.

Green space is absolutely vital in new developments, whether in one of our individual homes or larger developments and schemes, it plays a different role every time. Some require opulence and grandeur, while others want something a little more understated. I believe the landscaping is just as important as the homes themselves, and at Octagon, we like to take a ‘less is more’ approach. We are renowned making the most of our garden spaces and generous landscaping - it’s about

2. Do you think green space adds value and why?

3. What are your guiding principles in shaping green space? The main aim is always to create a private amenity space for our clients, somewhere tranquil and secluded.

5. How do Octagon select landscape architects and garden designers? Landscaping is one of the very first things that is formulated, as it needs to be submitted along with the planning application. We use Creepers for a lot of our schemes. They are a multi-award winning

Being a luxury developer, we want to work with people who appreciate our clients’ needs and expectations. However if there is any brilliant talent out there we have yet to discover, we are always happy to consider new people with fresh ideas and solutions. 6. Can you give me details of recent developments where they made interesting use of green space/ public realm? A recent Bespoke client specifically requested a garden with a Spanish feel, which was a great project to work on. He worked closely with us to create a fantastic home for his parents to live in, and wanted something truly special yet accessible for them to enjoy outdoors too. It was a large wraparound south west facing garden, and the design was done by Creepers. We put in some fantastic olive and fruit trees, and implemented a koi carp pond just outside the kitchen doors. A large patio area had two seating areas to relax in – one with a fire pit for evening entertainment – with a path winding up to a bespoke built summer house with gardener’s loo at the back of the garden. We have had feedback that his father loves to sit there and look out over the lawn and his new home! www.octagon.co.uk The interview is with Joe Taylor, Designer at Octagon.

CONTEMPORARY TOOTING GARDEN The brief for this South West London family garden was

the contemporary nature of the new house extension and maximise the size of the garden, while making good use of the sunny areas at various times of the day. The resulting garden does that perfectly and is a great example of urban chic. The garden designer, Shelley Hugh-Jones, worked closely with the architect and clients ensuring that the internal and external spaces complemented each other. Materials such as polished concrete, London stock brick, and timber were repeated both inside and out. A major consideration was to reflect the planting scheme and lighting with the house décor. Belderbos Landscapes landscaped the garden. The side entrance aided the construction and planting as materials did not have to go through the house.

14

Landscape & Urban Design Issue 34 2018

The garden is landscaped over two levels; the change in level is highlighted with a band of pebble tiles that are lit up at night. Cantilevered, timber seating wraps around a gas firepit on one side and a small lawn bordered by clipped Pittosporum tenuifolium and Hydrangea paniculata ‘Little Lime’ is behind the seating. A large dining table is housed on the opposite side. The main focus is the dramatic black pebble sculpture ‘Dark Planet’ by David Harber nestled amongst Polystichum polyblepharum, Euphorbia robbiae, Pachysandra terminalis and Anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’. At dusk, light permeates through the fissures between the stones adding drama to the whole scheme.

The tones of the cedar battening provide warmth and together with the pleached hornbeam trees along the back of the garden, they provide privacy and structure. Clipped Prunus lusitanica (Portuguese laurel) hedging creates an evergreen backdrop to the dining area and large planting border. A large multi stemmed Amelanchier lamarkii rises out from the surrounding planting of Salvia ‘Caradonna’, Euphorbia robbiae and frothy Geranium ‘Rosanne’ and Geranium phaeum ‘Samabor’. This softer planting provides a lovely contrast to the clipped domes of Buxus sempervirens that punctuate and surround this large border.

GARDEN TIPS

TOP TIPS ON HOW TO CREATE YOUR DREAM GARDEN While preparing for Autumn, the garden remains at the heart of family life for hosting BBQs, garden parties and family events. Trusted gardening expert, Cliff Woolley at CW Landscapes, a leading landscaper for housebuilder Crest Nicholson South since 1998, has shared his top tips on how to create your dream garden design in just five simple tricks. 1.

Check your garden conditions to understand what you can and can’t achieve without overcomplicating your garden space. This will help identify what to choose from, as it will allow you to consider what you want to view from inside when looking out. It will also highlight any hot spots for patio or decking that could be incorporated into your garden design.

2. Create a smooth finish and provide easy maintenance for your lawn, try to ensure two thirds of the garden can be turfed with slow curved edges. This will allow for easy mowing throughout the year and ensure that when spring arrives your lawn remains in a good, manageable condition after the cold winter months.

30

Landscape & Urban Design Issue 34 2018

3. When selecting trees and shrubs, do not select all colourful shrubs as these will only last for a short period. A good place to start is by googling “shrubs” to find those that have seasonal colour over a 12-month period for longer durability. This was a key consideration whilst landscaping the green areas and gardens at Tall Trees at Bolnore Village, where we deliberately selected easy manageable evergreen plants. This included the Aucuba golden king, Viburnham tinus, Senecio greyi, Cornus midwinter fire, Cistus corbanensis, which all retain their beauty year-round as we were looking to create 12-months of colour. 4. For smaller gardens, we would recommend using more herbaceous plants with seasonal colour and those that are 80% evergreen to ensure your garden keeps its colour all year round. These plants will only need dead-heading, rather than pruning, which makes them slightly less high-maintenance than shrubbery. 5. Try to maintain your garden little and often to keep everything in a manageable condition. Try mowing the lawn once a week and hoeing through borders every 14 days to stop the germination of weeds. This means no bending down to pick out weeds and produces a well-maintained garden to be proud of and impress your neighbours and guests.

Winchmore Hill, north-east London that needed an internal make-over and updating. They were in the process of gutting the house and adding a new back to it including rear facing bedrooms and wide garden facing French doors, so a garden solution was required as well and Peter Reader Landscapes was retained to provide this. The garden itself was derelict with a broken-up patio area and chunks of old concrete strip foundations through the wider space. There was also a significant

34

Landscape & Urban Design Issue 34 2018

The clients wanted the garden developed into a modern space which incorporated a good size garden office. They wanted room for outside entertaining and also an area of lawn that children could play on. The levels needed managing and rationalising to create functional terraced space and opportunities for structural planting. The solution was to create a large patio on the back of the house for a BBQ and entertaining, and to connect this to the lawn area using wide shallow steps.

The steps provided the first level change whilst keeping the lawn and patio functionally as one space. The wide steps also draw you into the wider garden and make it feel open and welcoming. The lawn area was edged with raised planters which were planted with structural semi-formal planting and also retain the level change at the boundaries that delivers the large central flat area. It was decided to use brick rather than render for the retaining wall finish, so that the look was in keeping with the era of the house. A bench is awaited to sit at the head of the lawn in the niche below

the raised rear beds. To the rear of the lawn a further set of steps leads you to the top level of the garden where a further, smaller patio sits in front of the garden gym and office. Being at the top of the garden means the office is away from potential disturbance, and also has good views over the planting, back to the house. Plant design here is semi-formal with topiary spheres and structural shrubs which add to the clean lined look of the space. In winter they will continue to give green structure.

The topiary is interspersed with a mix of low maintenance perennials which will provide change and floral interest through most of the year. Finally, a multi-stem Silver Birch and beautiful Japanese Acers add height and provide the finishing touch.

THE FUTURE OF COMMUNITYLED OUTDOOR SPACES COMES TO FULHAM Playinnovation, the innovator of inclusive outdoor activity spaces, in partnership with London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham Council, The Field Road Tenants & Residents Association; have teamed up to create one of the most innovative and unique Family Inclusive Sports Areas in the UK. The formidable partnership has re-energised and brought to life an area which was previously dis-used and tired. Now sits a colourful, vibrant and innovative multi-use games area, jam packed with opportunities for physical and mental activity, featuring Playinnovation’s new sensory ‘Hype Courts’ Basketball boards, educational target games, table tennis tables, traverse walls and gym equipment from The Great Outdoor Gym Company. The space is now fun, vibrant, and fully set for physical activation of people of all ages and abilities. The process, which involved spending time to listen to the thoughts, feedback, feelings and emotions of the community on and around the Field Road Estate in Fulham, enabled the Playinnovation design team to create a scheme which captured the very essence of what community life is like in this lively London suburb. It has transformed a low-use area into one, which is being used and enjoyed by all. The project has already attracted positive reviews and feedback and has been a beacon of community cohesion.

Rene Biro, Vice Chair of Field Rod TRA commented: “This amazing new space will bring our community closer. The area has been designed with care and attention to bring the local community closer by promoting a healthy lifestyle with an array of interactive games in the heart of Fulham.” Marco Boi, the CEO and founder of Playinnovation said: “The environment in which we live, work and play has a huge impact on our happiness and wellbeing. Therefore, to collaborate and work with not only Hammersmith and Fulham Council but the Tenants and Residents Association too resulted in one of the best installations we’ve completed to date.”

LOW-ALLERGEN VILLAGE GARDEN HOW DO YOU CREATE A GARDEN PACKED WITH FLOWERS, TREES AND SHRUBS FOR A CLIENT WITH AN EXTREME HAY FEVER ALLERGY?

Bramley Apple Garden Design discovered that with careful plant selection and consideration to both hard and soft landscaping, it is possible to design a beautiful garden that can be enjoyed all year round, whilst reducing the amount of airborne pollen which triggers hay fever and asthma.

Pollen is transferred from male to female parts of the flower usually by wind or insects. Airborne pollen is particularly fine and is carried freely in the breeze. The pollen that’s picked up and deposited by insects is generally stickier and heavier and less likely to irritate. As a general rule wind-pollinated plants should be avoided and opt instead for flowers where insects have to search for nectar such as trumpet shaped blooms or double rather than single flowers.

38

Landscape & Urban Design Issue 34 2018

Key Design Solutions The client’s hay fever was triggered by both grass and tree pollen and the site was surrounded by protected Oak trees and a large Ash tree in the garden. We couldn’t touch the Oak trees, but the large Ash was removed which introduced more light and opened up the garden. With a large garden and small budget, lawn is usually a cost-effective surface choice and the green of turf sets off the hard landscaping and planting. In this case, a lawn was not an option, so artificial turf was used, being both low allergen and low maintenance.

Danny Shafrir, Creative Designer at gpad, comments: “Through creative design and clear understanding of the market, we’ve created a quality, modern office environment influenced by the dynamic space itself. While the atrium provides prospective tenants with an ideal environment to meet and greet their own customers, we saw the opportunity to enhance the space further by integrating a living wall. “We are always keen to incorporate gardens or roof terraces into our projects and One Cathedral Square is no exception – it’s just sometimes we have to bring the outside in! The living wall is a statement piece, but it is also very calming and creates a beautiful, natural backdrop to grab a book to read over lunch and get some relief away from a computer screen.”

The Circular Tree Isles have a diameter of three, four or five metres. The tree isles consist of CorTen steel sections with a Rough&Ready sitting edge of FSC®®100% hardwood. The beams are positioned radially, offering a natural anti-skate solution. The unique tree isles are completely stand-alone or are embedded in the ground.

Part of Streetlife’s Rough&Ready product range, Rough&Ready Shades Curved offer a modular shade solution for public spaces. The beams are only available in light and durable W-Wood®® in honey brown colour with a similar life expectancy to FSC®® hardwood, but has a lower density and hardness. The steel structure can be galvanized or finished with an RAL- coating. This modular system allows for a variety of lay-out configurations.

Rough&Ready Hug a Tub The Hug a Tub configurations remain mobile, making temporary layout variations possible. They are a highly attractive option for councils looking to equip empty squares or concrete decks with green recreational areas. The robust Rough&Ready beams all run in the same direction, which allows for beautiful corner assemblies. The R&R wall benches can be mounted one-sided, double-sided and corner-sided, as well as all around.

Rough&Ready Royal Curved Benches are characterized by a high backrest, which provides additional comfort and style. The seating element consists of the Rough&Ready Curved Bench and the Royal Back Backrest back element. The beams of the backrest correspond to the beams of the bench when mounted. The Royal Back Backrest can also be used with both our R&R Circular Bench series as well as our R&R Crosswise Bench series.

The Rough&Ready Picnic Set extends the robust, industrial range to providing social areas and workspaces. The set combines flawlessly with other R&R products. The picnic table top is made of FSC®®100% hardwood beams with an integrated steel midsection, or optionally wood only as depicted above. James Moody, Managing Director at Meyer Homes adds; “Our ethos is to make sure we are connecting our buildings with the local area and its people. Our collaboration with David Harber at Gabriel Square has achieved just that - there are a lot of cultural values that we share with a garden and the sense of home.

The octaves merging from a hollow metallic shell are an authentic expression of a cacophony of sound that would emanate from instrument and man thrown together. The central circle is a customised laminated panel of glass with a mirrored interlayer, which reflects the blue of the sky during the day and moonlight at night. David Harber, who won the Best Trade Stand in show at RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2016, and The Director General’s Award in 2017, explains; “Its execution is dynamic, elegant and fluid, allowing the viewers imagination to interpret it in different ways. The piece is visually and in architectural form a signal for the people of Hertfordshire to come together. The rest of the landscaped gardens at Gabriel Square include dynamic plants, manicured lawns with play areas for children, and enclosed paved courtyards with garden tables, chairs and benches for picnics. Recalling the iconic layouts of grand Georgian and Victorian garden squares across the UK, the central space has been designed as a place in which residents can meet and interact.

STUNNING HANDCRAFTED PLANTERS DESIGNED TO LAST WITH MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME Owing to the durable MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME (MTX) panels from which they’re made, Oxford Planters’ custom-made products are “a long-standing investment,” says company owner Sarah Pierce. “We chose MTX because of its stability and durability; we love that it holds its shape and

maintains a flawless flat finish when subjected to the British weather- for up to 50 years, too.” said Sarah. As a modified wood panel, MTX is manufactured by MEDITE SMARTPLY to resist fungal decay as a result of moisture, using an organic process called acetylation; no harmful chemicals added!

retrofit SuDS project at that time.

by local residents, as recognised by a Sustrans community survey. Landmark SuDS Project In 2013, the head teacher of Randolph Beresford School and the White City Residents’ Association approached the

62

Landscape & Urban Design Issue 34 2018

Consultation with local people and a realization of the potential for the site led to an integrated design that linked two disconnected spaces and created a social arena celebrating rainfall.

Concrete block permeable paving was used to break the existing formal road alignment and introduce a ‘piazza’ within the Bridget Joyce Square. The scheme also connected the Randolph Beresford Early Years Centre to an adjacent play area and generated a social hub for parents and children. Local residents were keen to retain memories of the low wall in front of the school, used as a balance beam in their youth. From this the thematic ‘Wiggly Wall’ was born and became part of a ‘ribbon’ motif that united the linear spaces and symbolised the bringing together of the community. Innovative Sustainable Drainage The SuDS landscape, designed in conjunction with McCloy Consulting, celebrates roof water collection with sculptural gutters, downpipes and twisted steel halyards bringing water into planted raingardens. Some roof water, together with car park runoff, flows along sett channels and through stainless steel letterboxes into planted basins. The concrete block permeable paving overlay simply replaces a tarmac road surface over the original road base. The same blocks and 2-6mm grit bedding layer and jointing material as used in permeable pavements generally are here installed over a geo-composite conveyance sheet that transports water horizontally, on an impermeable membrane covering the road base. Water is attenuated and treated within the paving, then released horizontally via the stainless-steel letterbox slots into the planted basins. Finally, two flow control chambers on outlets from the basins protect the combined sewer. Thus, rainfall remains within the SuDS landscape until storms have passed and the sewer can deal with water again. A case study exploring this project has recently been published by Interpave, available from its website: www.paving.org.uk Interpave’s new website provides an essential resource covering all aspects of design with precast concrete paving, including permeable paving for SuDS. It features an inspirational project gallery and case studies, supported by background information for early design stages, as well as for CPD. A comprehensive series of technical documents covering all types of precast concrete paving products provide the definitive source of guidance for designers and contractors – including detailing, construction and maintenance.

NEW DRIVEWAY COMPANY REDEFINING AN INDUSTRY The driveway business hasn’t always enjoyed the best reputation, with expensive, hardsell national home improvement firms at one end and cheap fly-bynight operations at the other.

Since then the New Driveway Company has become one of Oxfordshire’s top exterior landscaping companies by offering the best materials, customer service and attention to detail in the business.

Oxfordshire brothers Darren and Ben decided that people deserved better.

Now they’ve taken that model and opened franchises across the UK, all using the same obsessively high standards and commitment to customer service that redefined the Driveway industry back in 2012.

They looked closely at the problems in the industry and built an entirely new model. RF Landscape Products A19 Doncaster Road, Whitley, East Yorkshire, DN14 0JW 01977 782240

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GROUND THE WORMSLEY CRICKET PITCH IN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE IS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS ‘THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GROUND IN BRITAIN’. The Wormsley cricket pitch in Buckinghamshire is often referred to as ‘the most beautiful ground in Britain’. When Mick Jagger introduced Sir Paul Getty to cricket, the millionaire philanthropist formed such an affection for the sport he had a replica of The Oval built on the grounds of his estate. The pitch was completed in 1992 and the first match played there was attended by Her Majesty The Queen Mother, the then Prime Minister John Major, Sir Michael Caine and cricket legends Denis Compton and Brian Johnston. What is now known as ‘Sir Paul Getty’s Ground’, Wormsley has in recent years played host to England Women’s test matches against Australia and India. Cricket Manager and former head groundsman for the Wormsley estate, Simon Tremlin heads the team responsible for maintaining the ground. With such a reputation to live up to he’s naturally very selective about the machinery he uses and a requirement for a scarifier and seeder led him to official GKB dealers RT Machinery near Aylesbury. “We do a lot of contracting work as well as looking after Wormsley,” says Simon “and it’s important to know the machines we use are sturdy enough to meet our needs. Last year we did fortytwo cricket squares as well as rugby and football pitches.” RT Machinery arranged with GKB Machines’ Tom Shinkins for demonstrations of GKB’s VStrong and Combiseeder at Wormsley. “We wanted a scarifier that collects as well and the VStrong showed us it’s ideal for that, leaving a tidy finish and saving time, especially in damp conditions.” Simon adds.

disruption.

An operating depth of 5cm is easily attained without missing any areas. The operating speed of up to 12km/h is a real benefit for the professional contractor, with fast removal of thatch and weed with the ability to collect at the same time.

“We’ve gone with the GKB machines for the way they perform and they are robust enough to withstand the punishment of contracting work,” says Simon, “and we have plenty of that ahead as well as maintaining Sir Paul Getty’s Ground.” GKB machines
