The Viger Square Revitalization: A Hybrid Landscape Grounded In Its Built And Artistic Heritage Ville de Montréal and NIPPAYSAGE

V

iger Square is about to reclaim its past glory thanks to a complete redesign and redevelopment led by the landscape architects at NIPPAYSAGE.

4 Landscape & Urban Design

Work will begin on the first phase, affecting the square’s two western blocks – part of Montreal’s 375thanniversary legacy – in the spring of 2017. The two eastern blocks will be the focus of the next phase, completing the revitalization of Montreal’s very first square outside the old town’s fortifications. Historical context Viger Square, bounded by GuyFrégault St. to the west, SaintAndré St. to the east, Viger Ave. to the north and Saint-Antoine St. to the south, was the first large public square created in Montreal. In the 19thcentury, it had the distinction of being the largest public square in Canada. Viger Square was a prestigious,

Between 1963 and 1984, the construction of the metro tunnel and the Ville-Marie Expressway tunnel under Viger Square led to the square’s demolition and reconstruction. Despite the participation of three prominent artists from the Quebec and Canadian modernist movement – Charles Daudelin, Claude Théberge and Peter Gnass – the square never reclaimed a level of urban utility appropriate for this large public space located just outside Old Montreal.

lively and much-loved space designed in the finest tradition of public gardens. The northward shift of elite francophone residential areas in the 1920s marked the beginning of the area’s gradual abandonment and decline, which accelerated after the crash of 1929.

“The square’s previous design and development reflected the planning ideologies of the time, including highwaylike roadways surrounding the square, the separation of the blocks with concrete walls, a large number of compartmentalized spaces, a lack of openness, light and natural sightlines, and a shortage of programming and other efforts to encourage people to use the space.

All of these factors inevitably contributed to the abandonment and eventual occupation of the square by a marginalized population,” said Michel Langevin, landscape architect and partner at NIPPAYSAGE.

Urban and architectural context Viger Square remains a major urban feature, distinguished by the presence of civic and residential buildings, of which several are very prestigious homes designed by acclaimed architects. The north side of the square faces

the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, formerly the École des Hautes Études Commerciales, while the south side faces the former Viger hotel and station, built in 1898 by Bruce Price, the architect who designed the Château Frontenac in Quebec City. The revitalization of the area will make a strong contribution to the re-adoption of the square, thanks in large part to the future redevelopment of the Viger hotel and station with new retail and office spaces, and the imminent opening of the new Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM). “Our mandate is to give the expected diverse new group of users a refreshed and creative concept that respects the built heritage and the mark left by the artists in the 1980s,” Mr. Langevin added. User-friendliness and inclusiveness The integrated vision for the future Viger Square is built around several elements: userfriendliness, aimed at creating a harmonious environment that mitigates the nuisances that led to the square’s decline; inclusiveness and a commitment to creating a space for all users, with flexible programming to encourage a wide range of uses; anchoring in the surrounding area in order to ensure that the space is perfectly integrated with the urban fabric; and, lastly, a commemorative element to restore the space’s iconic character.

6 Landscape & Urban Design

Following consultation, coordination and mobilization efforts involving numerous stakeholders, the design principles established by the NIPPAYSAGE team, in conjunction with the professionals at the Ville de Montréal’s Service des grands parcs, du verdissement et

du Mont-Royal, are varied: a unique, iconic form for the entire square, physical and visual openness, concentration of activities on a longitudinal axis, generous vegetation optimized for the constraints imposed by the underground expressway, showcasing of built and artistic heritage, reduction

Office spaces

of vehicle space in favour of pedestrian accessibility, and environmentally sound runoff management. The revitalization of Viger Square also created an opportunity to make fundamental changes to the layout of adjacent streets for the benefit of pedestrians and cyclists. Available parking will be reduced on perpendicular streets and the optimized, but still functional, reduction of east-west lanes will enable safe access to Viger Square and reduce the highway-like character of the streets.

A hybrid landscape In order to attract a highly diverse user base, Viger Square will have a hybrid landscape incorporating several landscape concepts: square, public space, park, garden, and public art. Varied event programming and service areas such as a café with patio, public washrooms and a space for promoting cycling in collaboration with BIXI Montréal, adjacent to the existing bicycle path on Berri Street, will allow the square’s users to enjoy it to the fullest, in a setting enhanced by additional trees and greenery.

Concerts, festivals and all kinds of activities will be able to use Viger Square as a venue. The café and patio, located in Daudelin block and designed by Provencher_ Roy architects, will bring liveliness to the square, in harmony with the landscape and public artworks. “The pavilion is a fused volume comprising three glass and steel cubes, which stand out and integrate with an existing composition by artist Charles Daudelin, through an interplay of transparencies and a distinctive, sharp outline,” said Claude Provencher,

architect and partner at Provencher_Roy. Users of all ages will enjoy the interactive fountain, ping-pong tables, exercise equipment, a skate park, a multi-sports field and a pétanque pitch. There are numerous possibilities for winter, including skating rinks, a Christmas market, a tobogganing hill, a heated patio and festive lighting. Animation and greening The underground expressway led the landscape architects to draw an east-west axis to serve as a public space, walkway and connector for the four blocks. The grand urban scale is defined by

the alignment of oversized benches and lighting standards, by careful positioning of the artworks and by free, indirect and random movement patterns. The landscaped axis will be punctuated by a series of playful, surprising objects: surfaces and temporary furnishings with an iconic character, and gardens featuring an offbeat mix of unexpected, sculptural vegetation. The areas designated for experimentation with vegetation will also contribute to the space’s unique character. The majority of green surfaces, covering half the square’s total area, will be located on either side of the axis. This will allow them to use areas unburdened by underground constraints, where the soil is deep enough for optimal growing of several species of broad-canopied trees and the implementation of environmentally sound runoff management, designed

in consultation with the engineering firm Consultants S.M. inc. Highlighting public art A major effort to highlight public art is at the core of the Viger Square project.

In Chénier block, the work by German-American sculptor Alphonso Pelzer, created in 1895 in memory of JeanOlivier Chénier, a doctor and Patriote who died in 1837 at the battle of Saint-Eustache, will be restored and relocated

Office spaces

to the centre of the block. In Daudelin block, the proposal is focused on the Agora, including the sculptural fountain called Mastodo, by Charles Daudelin. The partial return to service of Mastodo, in a fixed position, as well as its relocation to a setting built around water features, will help, as the artist wished, bring life to the space.

The preservation of the pergolas, which are also by Charles Daudelin, will help open the space while preserving the work’s artistic integrity. This reasonable balance will give the restored pergolas new life, integrated into a setting in which greening,

sustainability and safety are primary concerns. Forces by Claude Théberge, a concrete sculptural fountain located in Théberge block, will be restored in its current location, updated to rectify construction flaws, and

It will arouse users’ curiosity by conveying a concept of time that invites them to partake of an enigmatic experience built around waiting and surprise. Of the 22 existing concrete pergolas, an important topic of discussion among the stakeholders, 18 will be preserved, minus their roofs.

highlighted with new lighting. Lastly, Fontaine by Peter Gnass, located in Gnass block, will be replaced by a contemporary reinterpretation of the original work. Lighting The intent of the lighting concept, designed by Lightemotion, is to highlight the square’s various built elements while respecting the space’s vegetation. The lighting also clearly serves to improve safety, but it is also at times dramatic, vibrant or animated. “As in a theatre, the lighting apparatus is not decorative. To the contrary, the use of multiple projectors mounted on long, discreet standards on the main axis is intended to make the light sources disappear, allowing a certain degree of flexibility in illumination. The goal of lighting on the main axis is to highlight the various elements,” explains François Roupinian, president and design director of Lightemotion. The integrated vision conceived by NIPPAYSAGE and its collaborators proposes to enhance Viger Square through a welcoming and inclusive redesign, grounded in the square’s rich history and built, artistic and landscape heritage.

Don’t slip up when choosing timber decking By Charlotte Hughes, product manager for timber decking, at Marley Eternit

Timber decking is becoming an increasingly popular design trend for a wide variety of landscaping projects. From walkways through woods and parkland, to outdoor eating areas, viewing platforms and boardwalks, timber decking is being used to complement nature and create a sustainable aesthetic. No longer just a means of extending living space into the outdoors, landscape designers and architects are increasingly seeing the design potential of timber decking and it is now often used as a way of directing people’s attention, or linking areas of a site, for example in school or university campuses, holiday villages and regeneration projects. When choosing timber decking for landscaping projects, aside from aesthetics, there are some key considerations - most importantly strength, durability and safety.

One particular concern with timber decking is that conventional deck boards can become slippery in wet conditions, risking accidents and personal injury. It is therefore important to choose a product that meets, or preferably exceeds, the HSL’s anti-slip testing guidelines and this should be considered at the design stage for any application where there is a timber deck with public access. Our JB Antislip Plus timber decking boards are specifically designed to provide a durable and effective external anti-slip surface to minimise any risk of slipping – even in adverse weather conditions. They are particularly suited to cycle paths, rural footpaths, wetlands and bridges, where the decking needs to blend in with the landscape. We also offer non-slip JB CitiDeck which is designed for use in urban environments and is ideal for creating accessible routes for prams and

wheelchair users, or as a non trip surface for areas where there is a high volume of foot traffic. Both JB Antislip Plus and CitiDeck exceed the HSL guidelines and have been independently tested by the Health and Safety Executive, achieving a low potential for slip. All of Marley Eternit’s timber decking is manufactured from selected joinery grade European Redwood and is the first and only decking board in the UK to be CE marked. Pictorial Meadows

P

ictorial Meadows, the world leader in naturalistic planting, has helped eight roundabouts across the UK burst into bloom with a profusion of meadow flowers, bulbs and hardy perennials as part of a two year project conceived and funded by Enterprise Rent-A-Car and its philanthropic arm, the Enterprise Holdings Foundation. The £130,000 programme is the culmination of a long-term project to celebrate Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s 20 years in the UK. The transformation of roundabouts across the country with beautiful and sustainable urban meadows is the result of two years of careful planning, preparation, planting and tending. Enterprise engaged with leading experts in meadow technology to bring the project to life and approached the renowned Professor Nigel Dunnett of the Landscape Department at the University of Sheffield to design each

24 Landscape & Urban Design

location. Dunnett is one of the world’s leading experts in planting design and technology and his work came to national prominence when he created the much talked about meadows for the Olympic Park in 2012. In partnership with local authorities in Glasgow, Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham, Swindon and Woking, councils identified suitable roadside locations for the gardens. The roundabouts were then planted by Pictorial Meadows, pioneers in the commercial development of hardy seed mixes and turfs that create the naturalistic planting styles developed by the University of Sheffield’s research. In all, two acres of meadow were planted in the autumn and winter of 2015, together with a range of bulbs, shrubs and flowering species carefully selected for the climate and growing conditions prevalent in each location. Developed by the University of Sheffield and

implemented by Pictorial Meadows, a special innovation is the cultivation of assorted ‘pre-grown’ meadow mats at a site in Lincolnshire to provide sufficient meadow for the Enterprise project. The mats were grown off-site to allow for intensive irrigation essential to ensuring the young plants establish a strong root base. In addition to providing longlasting displays of colour over several months, the designs and seed mixes used on the roundabouts have been developed to flower year on year with the minimum of care. In fact, the flowering technologies developed by Nigel Dunnett and Pictorial Meadows have been shown to reduce maintenance costs for local authorities, as well as lowering the disruption to traffic required when gardening equipment is taken on site at roundabouts and roadside locations. The mix of plants at each site also fosters biodiversity and wildlife. They are especially appealing to local bee and

butterfly communities, which thrive when the carefully selected plants are in bloom. The Department of Landscape at the University of Sheffield is a world leader in the science behind sustainable public planting schemes. Professor Dunnett has spent two decades developing designs, techniques and processes to achieve consistently reliable and long-flowering performance from new urban landscape planting. He founded the company, Pictorial Meadows, to bring this technology to sites around the UK at an affordable cost, through a range of meadow seed mixes. Originally a company of the University of Sheffield, Pictorial Meadows is now the UK’s leading urban meadows specialist, with a reputation for innovation in delivering projects on the ground. pictorialmeadows.co.uk

Bituchem Creates Landscape For New Leicestershire School

H

ard-landscaping specialists, Bituchem, has recently been involved in the creation of a brand new primary school in Leicestershire. The construction of the new Fossebrook Primary School was completed in mid-July ready to open to Foundation, Year One and Year Two students in September. The school was developed by Leicestershire County Council to provide an additional school for earlyyear students in the area, and is sponsored by the Discovery Schools Academy Trust. The school was designed by Cornwall-based Kast Architects and MeiLoci landscape architects, who specified Bituchem’s specialist Natratex hard-landscaping material in

26 Landscape & Urban Design

Cotswold and grey to create an informal demarcated area for the playground. The surfacing works was carried out by Gary Fletcher Surfacing Ltd., who have much experience of

Bituchem’s materials. Natratex is Bituchem’s flagship product and has been used for various applications in schools due to its modern aesthetics and safety benefits.

The material was selected in grey and Cotswold for Fossebrook School to provide a varied surface for the children to play on, with designated coloured areas adding to the fun of playtime. Melissa Ralph, Landscape Architect at MeiLoci commented, “MeiLoci are very pleased with the Natratex surfacing – a great appearance and finish. Natratex really sets off the new timber school building and the warm tones create a welcoming setting for play. I would thoroughly recommend this product and look forward to working with Bituchem again soon.”Natratex is a material manufactured by Bituchem to the highest standards to offer a seamless, high-performing solution for hard-landscaping.

The material is created using naturally-occurring aggregates bound using Bituchem’s specialist clear resin binder to give it the complete compactness that it requires. The Cotswold and grey coloured aggregates offer an aesthetically pleasing alternative to a traditional tarmac finish, with the same durable and long-lasting qualities as asphalt technology.

The hard-wearing, compact finish of Natratex has made it a popular choice for school playground applications. The resin binder used to create the smooth surface reduces the likelihood of the material deteriorating and causing potholes or other breakages in the surface so eliminating trip hazards and making the material smoother and safer for young children. Natratex is a very versatile material and can be used for a wide range of applications, with a variety of colours available to suit all specifications. The material can be used for new constructions, such as Fossebrook School, as well as regeneration and overlay products. Natratex has proved to be a time and cost effective solution as it can be applied quickly and easily using conventional equipment. Porcelain Tiles - Top Quality Patio in Elstree Another great job by the real professionals at Arbour Design and Build, led by Richard Bickler and using GftK's vdw 815 Paving Joint Mortar that is ideal for grouting these top quality Emperor Limerick Porcelain slabs of larger format paving (larger format generally means the paving units are larger than 400 x 400mm). In addition to its ease of application and high performance and durability in service, this advanced material is specifically designed for narrower joints (down to 3mm). As with all of the range using GftK’s Epoxy Bound technology, ease of application also allows grouting and finishing the work in bad weather, even in the pouring rain - You actually can’t use too much water in the grouting operation, so the fickle British Weather does not stop you finishing the job (and getting paid of course!), plus it is the most durable and jet washing resistant paving grout there is! Finally on this project the colour was very important as the owners wanted to see the paving rather than the resin and it blended in really well.

If you need to get a paving project completed on time and despite the weather, or if you just want to save time and money on every job, contact Carl or Gary at NCC Streetscape on 01257 266696 For more information: www.nccstreetscape.co.uk

G & D - Open for Christmas with GftK’s 850+ Jointing Another stunning looking project – but it was only completed and opened successfully in time for Christmas, by using GftK’s vdw 850+ from NCCStreetscape Ltd.

rising screen windbreaks and café Barrier fences to be installed in time for the Pub’s official opening at the end of November – Whatever the weather!

The advanced Paving Joint Mortar was specified for the unique George & Dragon Pub in Dartmouth, because the Architect and Main Contractor both understood that this was effectively the last operation outside after all of the engineering and drainage works and it had to be completed and hardened for the Giant Umbrellas,

Despite almost continuous rain and gale force winds for nearly 3 weeks, the black limestone and granite sett paving was able to be laid and successfully jointed using GftK's vdw 850+ in good time for the scheduled VIP Reception and Opening Night .

Paul McGeary of Main Contractor, Building & Design Services Ltd., said that "with any other paving grout system this would have been impossible and a disaster for everybody because of the terrible weather. Without the vdw 850+ Jointing Mortar, this flagship Gastro-Pub redevelopment would never have been open running up to Christmas and New Year - and we would still be discussing penalties and trying to get paid!" Industry first for Addagrip Terraco Ltd BBA certification received for Resin Bound Surfacing range. Addagrip Terraco Ltd are delighted to announce that their Addaset, Addabound and Terrabound Resin Bound porous surfaces have all achieved BBA certification, making them the first and only Resin Bound Surfacing manufacturer to achieve this standard. BBA certification is widely known throughout the construction industry as a symbol of quality and reassurance. It is a vital ingredient for product manufacturers to help ensure acceptance with specifiers, building control, Local Authorities and insurers. The BBA have worked with Addagrip to achieve the approval of their Resin Bound Surfacing through the BBA’s robust testing and assessment schemes. Roger Critchley, Managing Director of Addagrip Terraco Ltd, says “With the continuing growth in the use of seamless Resin Bound Surfacing over the last 10 years, we have seen many new suppliers, manufacturers and DIY suppliers enter the marketplace. The BBA accreditation will set a benchmark for quality resin bound products and installations within the industry. The Addagrip Terraco Resin Bound products are a complete resin and aggregate system, installed by an Addagrip approved contractor to ensure that the correct ratio of resin to aggregate is achieved and the product installed according to our specific guidelines. Gaining the BBA certification has been a long process as we are the first company to invest in what we see as a very significant step forward in the Resin Bound industry. The BBA carried out site visits, inspecting old installations in order to confirm and check their condition after many years use, as well as visiting a live installation to witness the mixing and application process. A further range of independent product testing was also carried out which included permeability testing, as Resin Bound Surfacing is regularly used on SUDS-based schemes.” Addagrip Terraco Ltd views the BBA certification as a major step forward and one that could be potentially game changing for the Resin Bound industry. Call for proposals 18th International Garden Festival The International Garden Festival, presented at the Jardins de Métis / Reford Gardens in the Gaspésie region of Québec, Canada is preparing its 18th edition and is issuing an international call for proposals to select designers who will create the new temporary gardens that will be presented from June 22, 2017.

P

laysages: More than a play on words (play + ages or play + paysages), the idea behind the 2017 edition of the Festival is to put play front and centre. Bring play into the landscape. Inspire today’s young that outdoor play is just as interesting as on-screen amusement. The theme is an open invitation to re-think play and take part in the global discussion over nature-deficit disorder.

36 Landscape & Urban Design

Colour, movement, surprise, interaction, spontaneous encounters – these are just some of the elements that have made the playful gardens of past editions of the Festival so successful with younger visitors. And the same elements are what appeal to most adults – at least to those with a playful mind and a youthful spirit. This call for proposals is open to all landscape architects, architects and multidisciplinary teams from Canada and abroad.

International Garden Festival photo Pierre Lahoud

For complete information on this call for proposals, those interested should consult the web site: www.projects. internationalgardenfestival.ca. The deadline for the submission of entries is MONDAY NOVEMBER 14, 2016 at 5 pm EST.

This artistic and tourism event also gives visitors a chance to discover inspiring spaces bringing together the visual arts, architecture, design, landscape and the environment.

The Festival is an annual rendez-vousfor admirers of contemporary gardens and design as well as offering a unique creative space for those involved in the renewal of this art form. www.refordgardens.com

About the International Garden Festival The International Garden Festival is recognized as one of the most important events of its kind in North America and one of the leading annual garden festivals in the world. Since 2000, more than one million visitors have discovered over 165 contemporary and ephemeral gardens created by designers from 15 countries.

Looking Great For Solihull - Urban Flowers Reduce Maintenance Carbon Footprint

The visual and financial success of a Rigby Taylor Euroflor urban meadow flower planting scheme at a public park in the West Midlands is spurring the local council to consider the further widespread use of the flowers for other open spaces and highway verges in the borough. In a trial instigated by Amey’s regional groundscare contracts manager, Tim McGibbon, in conjunction with Rigby Taylor’s area representative, Andria Backhaus, the planting of the Euroflor Sarah Bouquet urban meadow flower seed mixture has created a colourful, monthslong display of wildflowers that has attracted many complimentary comments by visitors to the park. In addition, the scheme has also generated significant reductions in the carbon footprint of the park’s maintenance regime. Tim McGibbon explains: “By trialling the urban flower mix in an area that is traditionally grass and cut by Amey 18 times a year, we’ve created a visually impressive area that has transformed an area of dull grassland. Not only has it attracted positive comments but it has reduced the cutting frequency down to just once every 12 months.“

38 Landscape & Urban Design

“With Amey being responsible for around 60 million square feet of open space, grassed areas and highway verges for Solihull Council, any increase in our Euroflor planting schemes with help brighten up the parklands even more.

that “creates better places for people to live, work and travel” - is an established user of Rigby Taylor products, sourcing a wide range of consumables from the amenity specialist including fertilisers and line marking paint.

And, as a welcome by product, generates significant savings on cutting regimes for the authority in the future”.

Now, following the success of the urban flower mixture, Euroflor will be added to Tim McGibbon’s annual shopping list – and, after hearing about the project, other Amey Groundscare divisions look set to follow suit.

“This change to open space management practice makes sound economic sense but also creates for Solihull’s residents and visitors parks, that are a more pleasant place to visit.” Councillor Ken Hawkins, Solihull Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Housing & Regeneration, said: “The flowers have transformed an area which was previously short grass and has provided an excellent bed of colour on which park users have complimented us. Thanks to Amey’s idea we now hope to sow more seeds next year to make our parks even more attractive for people and wildlife - in support of our aim of managing all of our open spaces to Green Flag Award standard.” Amey’s Solihull Groundscare division – part of a nationwide, 21,000-employee operation

RIGHT TREE IN THE RIGHT PLACE The planting and establishing of trees to create the next generation can often be seen as primarily choosing quantities from a planting list and getting them planted. However, unless thought is given to the relationship between the trees selected and the users of the environment, and the suitability of these trees to the site constraints, their long-term future can be compromised. Questions to consider when selecting trees include: Who will use this site? What do they require? What are the existing constraints? How much space is available for new trees? Will the existing soil be sufficient, or will fresh soil be needed? Is the site vulnerable to flooding or drought? How long will the trees have to become established? There can indeed be a fine line between success and failure! The scheme designed by architects Lyons Sleeman Hoare was being developed by Land Securities and St James’s Investments, with McLaren Construction and Warefence appointed to install the car park steel mesh and cladding supplied

by perimeter fencing manufacturer Zaun. Zaun supplied Duo6 panels and posts, a fencing system based on a twin wire design, consisting of two horizontal 6mm wires resistance welded on either side of 5mm vertical wires. The result was a rigid perimeter fence that offered a high degree of vandal resistance and an extremely high level of through visibility. The mesh also offered the versatility of integrating into a 'green screen'.

The major upgrade of the town centre included £750,000 of improvements to the public highway with pedestrianised areas, improved street lighting and new LED traffic signals at the junction of Pegler Way and The Boulevard.

A further £3.2m of improvement work to Queens Square, the heart of the town centre, will be complete in early 2017. An additional £18m of capital has also been secured from the Local Enterprise Partnership for transport and infrastructure improvements.

Jacksons Fencing

New Tartan Design for Jacksons Fencing Jacksons Fencing, a UK market leader in the fencing and gate industry, has introduced an exciting new product to its premium garden fencing range.

T

Jacksons Fencing is a family business founded in 1947 in Kent. Today, it operates from three UK locations: Ashford, Bath and Chester and employs over 240 people in the design, manufacture and installation of timber and steel fencing, gates, environmental noise barriers, bollards, automation and access control systems.

48 Landscape & Urban Design

artan Trellis is a refreshing new spin on traditional trellis; designed by placing the batons at irregular spacings creates a distinctive pattern effect, rather reminiscent of plaid or tartan, giving the new product its name.

‘One of our more exciting challenges is to come up with fresh ideas that will inspire our customers, offering new choices for the garden and other outdoor areas. The Tartan Trellis makes a perfect airy and unique screen in the garden and offers a strong support system for climbing plants.

First introduced to the gardening world last month when it featured at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, 22 panels created an elegant boundary that allowed light and air to filter through it. This was seen by the many thousands of visitors who flocked to the show's famous Butterfly Dome area.

After a fantastic launch at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this summer, it is already proving to be very popular with our customers. We look forward to seeing it feature in many more gardens.’ As with all Jacksons timber products, the Tartan Trellis is manufactured from Jakcure® treated timber and comes with a 25-year guarantee.

Earlier research of ours indicated that there was an opportunity in the market for a modern stylish trellis product. Louise Tomlin of Jacksons Fencing commented:

wo lengths of hedge trimmer are now available in the range of 56 volt lithiumion powered garden products from EGO Power+.

Both hedgetrimmers boast EGO’s dual action, laser cut and diamond ground blade for increased precision and cleaner cuts to promote healthy, new hedge growth.

The range, which previously consisted solely of a 61cm option, now features a shorter 51cm model.

EGO’s European marketing director, Steve Roskell, commented: “Our 2015 launch season showed us that gardeners are desperately seeking an alternative to petrol and electric products. The popularity of our range immediately showed us that our 56 volt products offer them just that! We’ve introduced a new shorter model to the hedge trimmer range as we want to make the range accessible for people with gardens of all sizes”.

As well as the new length, the brand has also introduced an articulating hedge feature that rotates to 45 and 90 degrees, both left and right, to help gardeners trim hard to reach areas. The new model also features an extended 33mm blade gap, 11mm more than the 61cm model. As well as having an increased load speed of 3000 to 3600 rpm.

he project, known as the Heart of Campus, took three previously isolated and largely forgotten courtyard gardens and linked them together through the ground floor accommodation of the surrounding buildings. The brutalist 1970’s facades of the teaching blocks have been softened by a redressing of

the architecture by Page Park and by Churchman’s exuberant landscape which imposes a new organic aesthetic of curves and sweeping geometries. The new gardens will become places in which to study but also for students to meet friends and colleagues, they will in effect become the “talking points” of the campus. While they offer a means of access to the buildings and an area to sit outdoors, they will also have an academic focus which is rooted in the heritage of West Scotland. Over a period of three centuries a succession of Scots explored the globe discovering plants hitherto unseen in the UK, many of which have become so commonplace that they are now considered stalwarts

of the plantsman’s palette. The best known is David Douglas who introduced the Douglas Fir, others included Archibald Menzies, Robert Fortune David Lyall and George Sherriff. The courtyards will celebrate the exploits of these intrepid plant hunters who risked life and limb to bring new specimens back to these shores. Much of the diverse planting palette used at GCU consists either of the original species introduced by the plant hunters or contemporary hybrids, criteria that proved challenging for Churchman, for nurserymen J A Jones, and Perth based rhododendron specialist Ken Cox, himself a modern day Plant Hunter. The courtyards have a layout dominated by fluid curvaceous shapes, contrasting with the highly structured forms of the

surrounding buildings. The aim has been to create spaces that have a soft style, an aesthetic which we refer to as “urban lounge”. Winding pathways run around grassy whaleback shaped earthworks. Set into the sides of the mounds are timber pod seating and tables which provide work stations for study. These are spaces to learn in and to learn from, offering positive space at the core of the campus.

The visual softness of the design is reinforced by the detailing of the ground plane which uses the continental system of laying porous unbound setts in fan patterns. This approach, developed with CED and Steintec, produces a much more forgiving and more flexible treatment than is possible using conventional bound paving with mortar filled joints.

The purpose designed pod seats, designed by Churchman and fabricated by Bramhall 1840, reinforce local historic references, Douglas Fir planks being used for the cushion and back rest while the riveted metal trims echo Glasgow’s legacy of ship building.

becoming a more prominent feature at the show. Each year we see more and more brands in this area come on board and it’s great to see so many garden centre retailers and landscape designers visiting the show.” Simon Ainge, the Kettle Group sales director, said: “For the first time, Kettle Interiors will showcase two of its divisions on one stand: its impressive oak, pine and painted furniture for which the company is famed, will sit alongside home accessories from its sister brand, The Wicker Merchant - a new division that has gone from strength to strength since its launch just 12 months ago.

GREEN FINGERS FOR JANUARY FURNITURE SHOW

B

ringing a breath of fresh air to the January Furniture Show, the latest trends in garden and outdoor furniture will be featured at the 2017 event.

There are over 300 confirmed exhibitors already for the 2017 show. Brands that will display outdoor furniture and furnishings include Daro, Cozy Bay Furniture, Kettle Interiors and The Old Basket Supply Company.

With more stand space and more exhibitors, this year’s January Furniture Show will see more garden, outdoor and conservatory furniture showcased across the five jam packed halls.

Laraine Janes of the January Furniture Show said: “Our gardens are now seen as extensions of our homes. A place where we can bring the indoors out and kick back and relax on a summers day. Garden furniture is just as important as our indoor pieces, and we want to give manufacturers the chance to present their key summer ranges for the garden as well as conservatory furniture collections that can be used throughout the year.

The four-day show which runs from Sunday 22 until Wednesday 25 January at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC) is a must attend event for garden centre retailers, landscape designers, architects and specifiers giving them the first opportunity of the year to see the best of the best.

British Sugar TOPSOIL launches new Sports & Turf dressing British Sugar TOPSOIL has announced the launch of its second new product this year, Sports & Turf - a free-draining winter turf dressing ideal for use on winter games pitches, golf tees and approaches, and domestic lawns.

S

ports & Turf is a blend of 80% sand and 20% of British Sugar TOPSOIL’s BS3882:2015 certified topsoil. The sand is predominantly medium to coarse (67%) and sub angular in shape, which assists free drainage and promotes good integration into the surface of the turf. The soil within the blend contains both phosphorous and potassium, which contributes to soil fertility and encourages healthy growth. Sports & Turf has been tested and analysed by the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) and they are now carrying out two replicated trials - on golf tee turf and on fairway turf - at their research facility in Bingley, West Yorkshire. The turf comprises grass species also commonly found in winter

games pitches and lawns and the trials will test the effects of the topdressing treatment on grass growth, turf health, turf colour and surface playability. The new topdressing, at three different application rates – 2 kg, 4kg and 6 kg/m2/year - will be compared with an untreated control and with the same three application rates of sand only, on both turf types. The initial applications of topdressing and sand were made in October with a second application planned for spring 2017. The trials will conclude at the end of June 2017. Sports & Turf is also being trialled on the formal lawns of Kings College, Cambridge, where Senior Horticulturist Steve Coghill has recently applied 40 tonnes of the winter topdress-

ing. Steve is responsible for the beautiful parkland that surrounds the historic Kings College. Working with British Sugar TOPSOIL he agreed to trial Sports & Turf on areas where the grass has suffered from compaction and poor drainage, and he has been delighted with the results so far: “British Sugar TOPSOIL’s Sports & Turf is a fantastic dressing, promoting growth and helping improve drainage. It is also an excellent substrate for sports turf renovation and repair.” Sports & Turf is now available. For further information call our sales team on 01733 422 438.
