Positioned between the four chimney’s that have become synonymous with the Battersea development are three unique gardens that together make up the ‘Garden of Elements’, designed by Andy Sturgeon and brought to life by six-times BALI Grand awardwinners, Willerby Landscapes. Each garden is inspired by fire, water or air, harking back to the Power Station’s previous life. It is within these gardens, including the notable main podium garden ‘Boiler House Square’ that saw Boughton’s IN1 Intensive and Lightweight Green Roof Substrates, and Rootzone come into their own. These garden spaces, full of cloudlike planting schemes are set within raised beds and tall grasses with vegetation designed to offer year-round interest with a mix of evergreens, Mediterranean and more exotic species.

BOUGHTONINFRASTRUCTURE PLAYS A PART IN HISTORY AT THE ICONIC BATTERSEA POWER REDEVELOPMENTSTATION

Situated in the heart of London sits the iconic 39-acre, Grade II* listed Battersea Power Station, which has been subject to an incredible £9billion redevelopment project – one of the biggest schemes of this type anywhere in Europe. One brand that is proud to have played a part within this ground-breaking project is Boughton, suppliers of stunning green roof substrates for the Power Station’s ‘Garden of the Elements’ project.

Boughton’s IN1 substrate was selected to support this scheme thanks to its ability to support larger plants and to be installed at depths from 100 – 500cm, thanks to its sandy texture. Additionally, Boughton’s IN1 substrate offers significant moisture retention qualities, making it the perfect choice when so many plants are vying for attention within this threehectare site. IN1 from Boughton continues to meet and exceed all G.R.O Elsewhereguidelines.Boughton’s

Lightweight Substrate was used to provide growing media where weight loading for the green roof needed to be lighter than traditional green roof schemes. Finally, Rootzone completed the offering. Supplied as a ready-mixed solution, Rootzone provided better planting conditions throughout the scheme. Product was supplied in both bulk bags and 25L bags, meaning the Boughton team had to go above and beyond to tackle the logistically challenges that delivering to a central location presented. Representative of one of the biggest projects Boughton has ever been involved in, it was vital that the team got it right. Boughton Managing Director, Simon Hedley, said: “Being able to contribute to the development of the Battersea Power Station and play a small part in the history of this London landmark has been an honour and one that we are proud to share with our customers and the wider community. We have no doubt that our green roof substrate will help the planting at ‘Boiler House Square’ to thrive both now and long into the future, making this incredible garden space a truly iconic part of London’s green roof story.” Talking during the construction of the horticulturally rich roof garden, Willerby Landscapes said: “Boughton were a pleasure to work with, being able to safely deliver the material to site despite the many logistical challenges that this prestigious, central London project posed. They supplied us with top quality substrates specifically approved by Tim O’Hare, as well as a service that’s hard to beat”. Boughton IN1 Green Roof Substrate

Winnersh Triangle Business Park is a thriving business community with well-being at its heart. Acquired by Frasers Property in 2019 it provides agile workspaces for a diverse workforce and features stunning outdoor and green spaces. Frasers wanted to enhance the leisure facilities so TG Escapes provided a new sports hub working with S&C Slatters who designed the outdoor space including allotments, a living wall and a new Gen 2 sports pitch.

Frasers wanted to invest significantly to enhance the facilities at Winnersh. Landscaping was key to providing a stunning outdoor area to inspire. However, they recognised that they needed to provide reasons for customers to get outside every day so embarked on the development of a sports hub.

The district’s living wall makeover was delivered using 3,000 PlantBoxes (a clever and versatile living wall product) to create a pleasant and relaxing space, countering the usual rush of city life. On a smaller scale, homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to achieve the same serenity at home by better connecting with nature. Interior and landscape designers are often using living walls to achieve this for their clients, leaning on vertical structures to introduce more greenery to the home, without eating into valuable floorspace, or requiring an extensive garden.

We are noticing that trees are turning colour this year before the end of July! Isn’t it a bit early for autumn colours? Why is this happening this year? There are several influencing factors why and when leaves turn yellow and fall from the trees: generally, it is when the temperature falls, the daylight hour shortens, or the autumnal winds blow. But this doesn’t apply right now so what is going on? Tree leaf vitality is affected by several factors, and at this time of the year, the greatest of these is water availability. As trees take up water from the soil, this water, bringing hormones, minerals, and nutrients (known as xylem sap) is carried by the vascular system to the canopy, where the principle of evapotranspiration can take place, climatic conditions allowing. This process helps create a cooler micro-climate around the canopy of the tree (or plant – all green plants carry out evapotranspiration to some extent) and prevents desiccation of the leaf, and damage to the tree.

This appears to happen most often in tree planted in poor water holding mediums in the early establishment years. Whilst species choice can significantly affect how trees will cope in our increasingly hot and dry summers, correct planting specification is even more GreenBlueimportant.

Urban have 30 years’ experience in getting trees to thrive in challenging environments and in all climates across the world and are uniquely placed to assist you with your planting questions. It is noticeable in many urban locations that whilst trees in GreenBlue Urban soil cell systems are healthy and green, trees planted in other mediums are struggling, and having to be given supplementary irrigation via watering bags.

Worryingly, in some cases this can be fatal to the tree – embolism or cavitation can occur where an “air lock” forms in the xylem of the tree, which blocks flow permanently to the canopy, and one side or the whole tree can die.

HOW TO COMBAT THE EFFECTS OF DROUGHT ON TREES

This year so far has seen low rainfall overall – some areas experiencing unprecedented dry months, which is impacting on tree canopies. In areas where trees are planted in good soils, with a decent depth of soil, enough moisture is retained to keep the trees green. However, where soil depth or quality is compromised, we see these trees turning brown, and dropping leaves. This is how a tree reacts to a lack of moisture: to protect itself from drying up, the first emergency measure is to close the leaf stomata – the minute openings in the leaf surface which allow evapotranspiration to take place.

Accurate soil specification and testing is probably the most critical part of any tree planting specification, and then maintaining that soil in a healthy state, with a good balance of aggregates, silts and clays, organic elements, water, and air to assist the micro-biological and fungal activity to help the tree and planting to mediums at Cobham Services www.greenblue.com

Built in 1824, Southwell Workhouse remains the least altered poorhouse building remaining in the UK and serves as a stark reminder of the conditions and the way of life endured by thousands of our ancestors. The derelict building was in danger of being converted into flats when the National Trust bought it in 1997 and carried out major restoration prior to its opening to the public in 2002.

An area of sweeping grassed lawn leading up to the house and adjacent to the main visitor centre car park was identified for use as overspill parking for up to 60 cars during busy opening periods. However, planning, environmental and aesthetic considerations stipulated that a natural grass surface should be retained.

GARDEN

Two of the best and most costeffective ways of dealing with rainwater and runoff are green roofs, or at ground level, rain gardens. Rain gardens are one of the leading types of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) put in place to try to mimic water run-off as closely as possible to that in the countryside.

Green considerations:

Liverpool’s urban rain garden is designed to partially attenuate water within Polypipe’s ‘Permavoid’ underground storage crates. This stored water provides passive irrigation to the vegetation above, as well as storm water attenuation.

Liverpool Rain Garden. Credit: Dan Dean Photography

The urban rain garden at Upper Pitt Street, is an exemplar project (100% externally funded through the EU URBAN GreenUP projectwww.urbangreenup.eu), showcasing how landscape design combined with SuDS principles can be successfully retrofitted across our cityscapes.

SOIL TO EXPERIMENTAL CITY CENTRE RAIN

Follow us @ludmagazine GREEN & BLUE

As part of any urban regeneration, it is vital that consideration is given to the green infrastructure. The benefits are many; from the cooling effect from trees, both from the shade and the moisture they give off through transpiration or the filtering of pollution and carbon sequestration via the leaves and the substrates; and the attenuation of rainwater, slowing down the flow of storm water into our overburdened drainage system. In addition, the potential for added biodiversity; the added shrubs, trees or wildflowers providing vital habitats to bees, insects, and other pollinators.

Like bio-swales, rain gardens are designed to take water runoff from impermeable surfaces such as roads and pavements. They filter out contaminants and debris such as silt and vehicular contaminants washed off the road surface by rainfall, whilst holding onto the excess water and slowing down the release, which in turn reduces the pressure on the storm drains. They are effective in removing up 90% of pollutants, and up to 80% of sediments from this surface water runoff.

Rain gardens will usually feature plants that can withstand waterlogging up to 48 hours at a time, as most swales will drain over a period of 12 – 48 hours. Large feature rocks and pebbles also help in the filtration process. For the urban rain garden in Liverpool, plants were chosen for their drought resilience, to suit the specially blended freedraining nature of the substrate.

Background: Liverpool is England’s third largest city with a rich industrial heritage. However like many cities, it has suffered its fair share of urban decline. Over the past few decades there has been a flurry of redevelopment initiatives to address this decline, all placing Liverpool firmly as one of the UK’s up and coming business destinations.

2. Using moisture probes to monitor moisture and temperature levels between the beds.

Green-tree offers a wide range of lightweight green roof and podium substrates, as well as rain garden and bioretention soils, all using their British Standard manufactured topsoil as a base. In this instance, as Liverpool had no previous experience using rain gardens as a “green solution”, it was proposed to create a test area to demonstrate what could be achieved.

Green-tech involvement: Green-tech has been manufacturing soils since 2004 under the brand name Green-tree. These soils are widely regarded to be amongst the best in the country, suitable for a wide range of standard and specialist landscaping purposes.

on this project Martha Redman, Chartered Landscape Architect from the Sports Turf Research Institute said, “STRI have worked with Green-tech for several years now. Throughout this time, Green-tech has provided invaluable support in developing and delivering customised substates to meet our ever changing, often challenging, design requirements across a variety ofUppersectors.”PitStreet

The performance of each bed will be monitored by Liverpool City Council, in collaboration with the University of Liverpool and The Merseyside Forest organisation.

3. How the different soils affect: vegetation, pollinators, water quality (and pH levels) and air

The various testing parameters will include: 1. Water flow during storm events and the velocity of discharge.

Credit: Martha Redman STRI Liverpool Rain Garden.

Blend 3 is an experimental custom soil containing brick fragments, that in theory should aid permeability, whilst improving filtration. It will be interesting to see how this performs against the more traditional mixes.

Our CitiDeck® and AntiSlip Plus® products have been independently tested using the HSE’s preferred method of a pendulum test. A minimum pendulum test value (PTV) of 36 is required for the surface to be classed as a low slip potential. CitiDeck® and AntiSlip Plus® comfortably exceed this minimum, scoring a PTV between 60 to 80, depending if the surface is wet or Choosingdry. a natural timber decking product can be one of the most sustainable choices for hard landscaping materials. ALTERNATIVESDECKING TO TIMBER DECKING

Is composite decking all the same?

If you’re in the trade you are probably accustomed to being asked about timber alternatives for decking. Here Caroline Birdsall, Director of Marketing at wood-look decking manufacturer Millboard, explores some of the frequently asked questions around alternatives to timber.

What is composite decking? Composite decking is an innovative outdoor flooring solution which combines man-made materials – and sometimes also wood fibres – with a bonding agent to make a decking board that looks like timber but is more capable of withstanding the elements. It has become increasingly popular with homeowners who value its durability, ease of maintenance and slip-resistant qualities.

There are many different types of composite decking available. As is generally the case, you pay for quality, so decking that genuinely looks like wood is more expensive than some of the cheaper alternatives. For instance, Millboard’s range achieves its amazing resemblance to real wood through being hand-moulded from carefully selected pieces of oak, with each board hand-coloured in realistic tonal shades to give a natural timber appearance. What is capped decking? Most composite decking uses some element of wood fibre in its composition and some manufacturers therefore cap their boards with an additional surface layer to provide protection against water damage and algae growth. Whilst a capped decking board containing wood fibres may have more protection than an uncapped board, this is unnecessary in a board that does not contain wood, such as Millboard. Millboard is rather unique in the world of composite decking in that it is actually wood free. Is it maintenance-free? Composite decking is a great solution for homeowners who would prefer not to undertake regular cleaning, sanding and oiling/ staining to maintain the appearance of timber decking and prevent it from rotting. Millboard decking usually just requires an occasional sweep with a stiff broom to prevent debris build-up, and a clean with soapy water twice a year. Composite decking is also less likely to warp or fade in comparison to timber. It’s therefore an ideal decking material for homeowners who want to spend time relaxing and enjoying their decking, rather than maintaining it! www.millboard.co.uk

Live. Life. Live.Outside. Life. Outside. Every now and then, something comes along to knock an original off its pedestal. Welcome then to Millboard decking. Through continuous research and development, meticulous attention to detail, expertise and innovation we’ve created a board that’s hand-moulded from natural wood – and we think it could be better than the real thing. It won’t rot like real wood, warp like real wood or attract mould like real wood. It just takes the best of real wood and enhances it. Beautifully.

The decking areas were originally specified with artificial grass but due to the increased need for fire safety on projects of this nature, the Dura Deck system was chosen by the architect as a more suitable option.

Landscape Architects and Environmental Planners, Standerwick Land Design, worked with landscape services specialists, Valley Provincial, to bring the new areas to life. With over 45 years’ experience, Valley Provincial has won multiple awards for its high-end commercial and residential projects. The company was responsible for the installation of Dura Composites’ Class Bfl fire-rated Dura Deck Flip decking and A2 fire-rated substructure system on the terrace and within the communal garden.

DURADECKING

Dura Composites’ reversible decking boards were installed on the terrace within the communal garden of The Lock at Greenford Quay in West London to enhance the area’s natural beauty, whilst meeting strict safety standards. The Lock at Greenford Quay is a development of 194 waterfront apartments, located in the London Borough of Ealing in West London, featuring a beautifully landscaped garden with innovative seating areas and a stunning rooftop terrace with panoramic views.

The Decking Handbook has been produced as part of the TDCA/TTF partnership agreement – and on the back of the publication of the Timber Cladding Handbook last year, will help strengthen the market for both timber cladding and decking by providing sound, easy to follow information. This is all in addition to the TDCA’s existing work within the timber cladding and timber decking industries. The organisation operates the DeckMark and CladMark quality schemes, which verify the quality of the materials that have been approved, or the high standards of the installer that has been accredited.

Step 1: Decide where to place the bowl. Be aware of the position of your power source, which is required for running the pump and light (two sockets needed). Place the reservoir and mark out the area you need to excavate (see step 1 image). Once the hole is ready, level the ground to ensure the water will flow evenly over the edge of the bowl. Put the reservoir in the hole and backfill any space with soil.

Step 2: Place the pump within the pump chamber opening. Route the power cable to prevent damage. It is important to check the level to prevent future balance problems. Once you are happy with both the pump and reservoir, you may move on to assembling the bowl.

With sustainability being the key theme for 2022’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live at the NEC in Birmingham, Frances Tophill, well known horticulturist, author and television presenter for BBC Gardeners’ World, had set her sights on making her debut show garden at the event “as sustainable as it possibly can be”. Rupert Keys, Managing Director at Keyscape Landscape Design & Construction and founder of landscape training company TASK Academy, along with Ruth Gwynn Associates, landscape architect, garden designer and horticulturist, were handed the mission of delivering Frances’ vision, and constructing her eventual awardwinning garden. With a strict remit of using only locally sourced, recycled and reclaimed materials where possible, Rupert turned to ACO House & Garden for advice on how this could be achieved when stabilising the recycled aggregate around the space. 100% Recycled To demonstrate how gardens do not need to sacrifice looks for sustainability, Frances’ garden design centred around a Bauhaus, post-industrial look, with many of its features like the greenhouse and tin shed built with recycled materials. Alongside the constructed elements, many of the plants in the garden were chosen for their usefulness to humans. These included shadeloving plants, climbing fruits, vegetables and herbs, and a turf suited to wildlife that helps protect Tyingbiodiversity.theentire aesthetic together was a recycled aggregate pathway, which meandered from the entrance through to the centre of the garden.

Award-Winning Design Underpinned with Simplicity With its challenging and thoughtprovoking design, along with its commitment to BBC Gardeners’ World Live’s sustainability theme, Frances Tophill was awarded a Platinum Medal and also Best Show OnGarden.theproject, Rupert said, “This has been one of our most challenging briefs yet, given how almost everything had to be sustainably sourced or produced. We were very thankful to the team at ACO for their expertise and knowledge. The GravelGuard Grey Eco solution was delivered fast and on time, while the product itself was easy to handle and install, making this part of the project quick and simple.” After the show, elements of the garden were donated by Frances to Foleshill Community Centre, which has a community garden to grow produce used to cook or give to members of the social supermarket they have set up. As well as this, the charity has set up a thriving well-being programme, including yoga, craft, food days and gardening sessions. For more information about GravelGuard and ACO, please https://www.aco.co.uk/products/visitgravelguard

A key challenge for Rupert was ensuring that this aggregate was stabilised and did not migrate when walked on by the visitors to the show. Additionally, the solution had to meet the sustainability theme and be easy to install.

Oliver Collins, Product Marketing Manager at ACO House & Garden, suggested the use of ACO’s GravelGuard Grey Eco modular tiles. Commenting on the project, Oliver said: “When Rupert came to us for advice, we knew instantly that GravelGuard would be best suited for the application. Our suggestion was to use the Grey Eco version, as it matched the natural-coloured gravel and “Moredesign.importantly, it is made from 100% recycled polypropylene and is specifically designed to prevent gravel from moving, making it ideal for driveways, paths and shed bases. Thanks to its integrated membrane, it can prevent weeds taking root as the garden matures, while its geotextile design speeds up installation. This was a key requisite of the project given the tight turnaround times facing Frances and Rupert.” Two pallets of GravelGuard were delivered to Rupert in Birmingham. With a total of 34 tiles and 61m² coverage, the installation took only one day.

to consider practical solutions that will provide shade and shelter from the unpredictable British weather, including heatwaves in the summer and torrential rain, wind and snow in winter. Add a canopy or awning The addition of a canopy or awning is a quick, easy and affordable way to transform your outdoor space whilst acting as an extension of your property. Opting for an electric awning means you’ll be protected from the sun, rain showers and even wind speeds of up to 30mph at just the touch of a button! Install a pergola Modern pergolas with sliding/ retracting fabric or rotating aluminium louvered roofs (and sides) in the form of a freestanding structure or adjacent to the house is a simple yet effective way to give the impression of an outdoor ‘room’ whilst providing complete flexibility to the user. High-performance external blinds can be mounted to the top and sides of an existing veranda or pergola to help create a cosy and pleasant environment all year round.

Consider what your outdoor space will be used for Any obstructions such as trees or fences, the position of the sun when it sets/rises and the primary use of your patio or garden will help determine which external shading product is best for you. A canopy or awning with a lower projection will effectively cover a small outdoor dining table, however, if you like to entertain al-fresco on a regular basis, a larger projection is highly recommended!

Sustainable modern architecture has evolved into the industry standard for construction projects, generating a flood of designs incorporating natural materials, such as wood. Pervasive across sectors, this trend can be seen in the construction of houses, flats, offices, and public buildings, amongst others. However, by nature such materials are perishable and without maintenance will rapidly deteriorate.

UV Protection Oil is the latest high-performance addition to the specialist range of ArmourFlex coatings from Barrettine, offering an efficient solution to protect exterior wood facades and vertical surfaces. Armourflex UV Protection Oil has been formulated with a careful balance of UV absorbers and antioxidants, designed to capture the damaging UV rays from the sun and dissipate them safely away as heat. In turn, this averts greying and hinders swelling, shrinkage, splitting, and warping of wooden surfaces. With performance-tested resins the product also resists water and dirt, thereby reducing potential discolouration from fungal attack. This gives an overall picture of healthy timber, with an extended service life and reduced maintenance expenses. Wooden facades will regress to grey and warp if left unprotected, even for relatively short periods of time. This necessitates the expense of re-cladding and reduces the eco- credentials of the design. UV Protection Oil retains the cladding as a protected investment, looking new for longer and maintaining its structural integrity. The product will not crack, peel or flake when subjected to the intense variety of our annual weather cycle. The product is not limited to wide expanses of cladding, it is equally suitable for exterior doors, window frames and joinery, to protect

Straightcurve® was founded by a landscaper and a mechanical engineer, therefore offering a greater understanding of the issues that landscapers and garden designers can come up against. The range, originally started in Australia, is already a favourite with garden creatives in the USA, Norway and the Netherlands. The benefits to those in the professional sphere of gardening, garden design and landscaping knows no bounds. Straightcurve offers a high quality finish without the need for highly skilled workers (i.e. no welding required). Research has also found that Straightcurve products can be installed three times faster than other edging. The systems include Flex Garden Edging, the flexible yet incredibly sturdy system making it unbelievably easy to work with. And for those structured, straight lines, you can’t beat our Rigid Garden Edging range. With in-ground and above ground solutions for all of our products, you’re limited only by your imagination.

The range, however, offers more than just edging. With the gardening season well and truly up and running, there are also Flex and Rigid Raised Garden Bed solutions. There are various size options available, with the heights of panels ranging from 240mm, 400mm and 560mm, and variations of height are all produced in the length of 2160 mm per panel.

No fuss with Straightcurve ...the simple yet effective garden edging and planter solution!

“Being both a Design Engineer and Landscaper I can highly recommend this new innovative edging and planter product from Straightcurve. Manufactured from the highest quality weathering steel, the possibilities are endless. Installation onsite is fast and both the straight lines and curves are on point. By far the most universal edging product I’ve used.”

The fixed height of 400mm Planter Boxes are perfect for growing vegetable or other plants. They can also be used as retaining walls, storage boxes and outdoor furniture bases. They are very easy to install with hidden fixings and bolt down Forcapabilities.manyyears, professional gardeners, landscapers and designers have been desiring the ‘Corten Effect’, but edging in this material has been near enough impossible to find in this country until now. Straightcurve is made with a special steel called Weathering Steel (also referred to as corten). This steel behaves differently to common mild steel when in air. In fact, it rusts 4 times more slowly by developing a fine rust patina on the surface that inhibits further rusting. This is a continual process which accounts for the subtle darkening of the patina colour over time, resulting in the stunningly beautiful, rich earthy tones of Straightcurves products.

GONEDESIGN

The Going Green range was collated from our present stock range in direct response to customer requests for environmentally friendly products. Our sundries team researched into and grouped together all shop products that are either organic, wildlife friendly, child and pet friendly or have natural ingredients as their main components to create the Going Green range.

The Going Green range encompasses a wide range of goods, landscape supplies including lawn feeds, plant fertilisers, soils, mulches, insecticides, natural pest and disease control, fungicides, soil improvers, wild flower seeds, mycorrhizal fungi, living walls made from 100% recycled plastic and even an option to control Box Tree Caterpillar with Box Tree Moth traps. With the proliferation of interest in wild flower meadows recently, the Pro Flora wild flower mixes specific to soil conditions or environmental situations are proving particularly popular this year specially since the Chelsea Flower Show in May. Mycorrhizal Fungi / Rootgrow is the most popular line in the Growing Green range as there is a product for almost every situation or plant type. We recommend this to every customer when purchasing shrubs, trees, hedging, topiary and all higher value stock. When applied to the roots at planting Mycorrhizal fungi increases the root surface area allowing the plant to establish quicker and to take up a larger amount of water and nutrients back to the roots themselves. Using mycorrhizal fungi products increase yield by up to 20% and with the different options can be used when planting, after planting and also an ericaceous plant option. (See Factsheet 8). THE product when planting shrubs, trees, hedging and all high value stock

GREEN RANGE

In early 2021, the Going Green range was launched as a new initiative at Provender Nurseries. This may seem like old news, but the enquiries still pour in on a weekly basis. The need to source and use products that have a leaning to the green side is important for the environment that we as an industry strive to create.

Box Tree Moth traps provide all season long biological control for the Boxwood Moth. The trap is baited with pheromones attracting the male moths and thus breaking the life cycle preventing the reproductive process taking place. Each trap is reusable and is effective for 180 square meters. Included within the Going Green options are our range of peat free composts, soils and top soils many of which are available at reduced prices if purchased by the pallet. With more of a leaning towards the green things in life and creating healthier habitats for us all and wildlife to live in, our Going Green range is a moveable feast with new products creating a broader range being actively sourced and added to on a constant basis. Keep on asking and we’ll keep on looking at products to add to our Going Green range. www.provendernurseries.co.uk

Adding an eco-friendly paving system such as SureSet resin bound is one way to achieve this. Advantages Of Sustainable Resin Paving • Recycled – it can be made with recycled materials, such as glass. Meaning less pressure on the environment through sourcing new building materials whilst reducing waste to landfill. No ice – SureSet is permeable, in winter the water seeps through the paving and into a drainage system or the ground below which keeps the surface warm, preventing ice from forming, being safer for driving and walking. No puddles – resin bound paving prevents puddles from forming when it rains reducing the slipping hazard of puddles, and has less algae and moss. • Cool – Another benefit of using eco-friendly materials such as SureSet is they’re lighter colours options, and the circulation of water, keeps those surfaces cool during summer, with less heat island effect. This need for repointing usually becomes evident by the existing pointing cracking, then breakingup in the joints and coming out in pieces, or by the original pointing deteriorating by erosion from the surface down and being washed-out of the joints by rainfall and cleaning regimes, typically involving jetwashing and/or mechanical street cleaning machines.

In both pointing cracking and eroding from the joint situations, this is almost always due to the original, or previous repointing works, being carried out with inappropriate materials for the area’s loading and exposure e.g., accelerated freeze-thaw due to de-icing salts, pressure jet washing or mechanical road sweeping machines. Alternatively, and/or the pointing material was installed in the wrong conditions e.g., in wet, or damp conditions with residual water in the joints, or the area being subject to rainfall, water run-off, or to direct sunlight and high winds before the material had hardened.

Why is Repointing Necessary?

www.NCCStreetscape.co.uk

All around the UK, the need for small format paving repointing, seems to be increasing in all areas of urban paving, especially heavily trafficked areas of our roads and other frequently used areas, such as historic market squares, and the entrances to retail, commercial and all types of public facilities.

For repointing urban paving in public access areas the selection of the right paving jointing material is essential, and the selection, specification, and installation decisions, should be made following suitably qualified assessment of the anticipated future loading and exposure, the type of paving and the joint dimensions, plus the time and installation conditions at the time.

URBANSURFACING -REPOINTINGPAVINGFORTHELONG-TERM!

70 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine BOUND

Urban paving repointing requires special solutions to be successful and durable, so that it does not need to be redone again the following year. There are many different materials technologies, brands and products that are promoted as paving pointing solutions, as well as contractors that tend to make purchasing decisions based on the cheapest price per tub or bag, or simply on product availability in their local merchant. These additional factors are always an issue and will compound the potential for future problems if the right materials are not specified correctly and their installation controlled on site.

DREAMINGSTONEWORK OF THE PERFECT PATIO?

Since its launch in 2010, EASYJoint from Azpects has been a marketleading jointing compound loved by landscape professionals and the DIY sector alike. The all-weather, sweepin jointing compound is a quick, effective, and attractive way to fill joints between paving.

EASYJoint has done precisely that with the new EASYJoint Select range of solid colours, featuring Tungsten, Carbon, Bronze, and Jet Black. The solid colours provide a more uniform, modern finish compared to the natural colours of the original EASYJoint range. EASYJoint Select is suitable for porcelain and natural stone paving and retains the sweepin application method that made EASYJoint so popular.

Associate Director Jeff Carter comments, “Azpects are excited to see our EASYJoint range continue to grow, with eight products now in the family. We pride ourselves on keeping up with the latest trends in the marketplace and do not doubt that this bespoke range of colours will satisfy our users’ needs.”

With summers set to become longer and hotter, more people than ever are looking to make the most of their outdoor spaces. Forget gloomy, grey concrete; Brits are looking to capture Mediterranean vibes with pristine porcelain, fully functioning bars, and even outdoor kitchens. The key to the perfect outdoor living space is in the details: complementary colours, a smooth finish and quality materials.

Azpects’ tubs are all 100% recyclable, further reducing the material sent to landfill.

As paving trends develop, products need to evolve with them.

Azpects are also leading the way in sustainability, introducing partrecycled tubs as early as 2020. All tubbed products are now made from at least 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and are fully recyclable. PCR offers a second life to plastic products that might otherwise have ended up in landfill, allowing the contents of your household recycling bin to be remade into something new.

PERMEABLE PAVING AND TREES IN SYNERGY

The 2021 ‘National Planning Policy Framework’ (NPPF) for England lays out what local planning authorities (LPAs) will require, when setting local policies and also considering planning applications for all developments. The NPPF states that: ‘Planning policies and decisions should ensure that new streets are tree-lined and that opportunities are taken to incorporate trees elsewhere in developments’.

Irrigation and Gas Exchange Unlike conventional impermeable hard landscape materials, CBPP allows the same pattern of run-off transfer to the ground as natural vegetation, enabling water to reach tree and shrub roots, despite providing an attractive hard surface above. In addition to irrigation directly from rain, with CBPP there is scope for water storage and rainwater capture away from trees and their umbrella canopies, for gradual conveyance laterally to trees – essential during the summer.

Local planning authorities will now incorporate long-term tree maintenance measures in their planning consents and a straightforward spatial solution, such as permeable paving, offers a holistic multifunctional solution.

Helping to address climate change, street tree planting and retention of existing trees in developments – with provision for long-term maintenance – are now embedded in planning policy. Concrete block permeable paving offers an important opportunity to help satisfy these requirements simply, integrated with SuDS and contemporary urban design, as Interpave explains.

Urban trees and paving have traditionally been seen as in conflict. But this is not the case with concrete block permeable paving, a key sustainable drainage (SuDS) technique to reduce flood risk and make cities more liveable.

Maintenance Requirement However, measures need to be put in place to nurture and allow trees to mature, generally for decades enabling them to actually deliver their real potential – including net carbon storage, urban cooling through shading and evapotranspiration, biodiversity and public wellbeing. So, the NPPF also requires that: ‘appropriate measures are in place to secure the long-term maintenance of newly-planted trees, and that existing trees are retained wherever possible’.

In addition, CBPP enables air to reach roots and poisonous CO2 to escape. The favourable environment created for tree roots avoids pavement surface disruption and facilitates natural growth into lower levels for stability and longevity. CBPP can be used within newbuild, or regeneration schemes with new tree planting and also for ‘rescuing’ mature trees. Concrete block permeable paving can be used

74 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine

The difference with permeable paving is enlarged joints, filled with a permeable aggregate, and the materials used below the blocks, which are specifically selected to accommodate water without clogging. Concrete block permeable paving is unlike – and not to be confused with –permeable materials, which behave very differently.

Concrete block permeable paving (CBPP), offers unique opportunities to collect, attenuate and treat rainwater runoff, removing pollutants for a gradual supply of clean water irrigating green infrastructure. Essentially, this technology shares the same impressive performance as conventional modular concrete paving products, being slip resistant, durable, strong and sustainable.

Minimal Maintenance Permeable paving can be laid level and still avoids puddles without the need for drainage gulleys. It provides a safe, firm, pot-hole free surface for everyone – including wheelchair users and people pushing prams.

At Love Lane, Tottenham, structural tree pits connect road-narrowing tree planters on each side, based on the ‘Stockholm Solution’. Image courtesy of Robert Bray Associates. Low Intervention Retrofit Another important innovation –particularly for regeneration – is the retrofitting of CBPP as an overlay to existing, conventional road bases or other hard surfaces. These thin overlays create attractive, safe and sustainable shared-surfaces. They can be particularly effective when used to supply a gradual flow of clean water horizontally into raingardens or bioretention areas with trees and other green infrastructure, via simple slot inlet/ outlets, to store water for irrigation and biodiversity, as well as flood prevention. Such low-intervention techniques enable transformation For project case studies and guidance on all aspects of permeable paving and SuDS www.paving.org.ukvisit: of the public realm in response to the raft of recent active travel, low traffic and open space initiatives. This approach is exemplified in Bridget Joyce Square, London, an important regeneration project which won the top prize at the 2017 Landscape Institute Awards. Here, a typical, adopted asphalt street and adjacent parking areas were transformed for community use with CBPP overlay shared surfaces and tree-planted raingarden basins

www.landud.co.uk 75Follow us @ludmagazine in conjunction with raingardens, tree-pits or proprietary systems avoiding air pipes, reservoirs or other structures for irrigation and gas exchange.

– an exemplar for future urban landscapes. The basins provide water storage (in place of the paving sub-base) for SuDS to reduce overloading existing drains, as well as for irrigation.

Innovative concrete block overlay paving collects, conveys and cleans rainwater for tree-planted basins at Bridget Joyce Square, London Well-established Green Infrastructure Interpave revisited the project in August 2021, around 5 years after completion, and noted that trees and other green infrastructure were healthy, substantial and particularly well-established. The permeable paving is also performing well and, it is understood from local sources, experienced no problems during recent extreme summer storms, despite extensive flooding nearby.

A new case study on regeneration projects in Tottenham, London, exemplifies the growing potential of concrete block permeable paving in the hands of innovative designers to deliver SuDS and optimise synergy with street trees to address climate change. It includes a concrete block permeable paved adopted highway that also accepts runoff from impermeable surfaces. This paving incorporates structural tree pits, based on the ‘Stockholm Solution’, to enable trees to benefit from rainwater collected from an extended catchment, making them healthier and more resilient to drought. At Broad Lane Square in south Tottenham the same designers take forward these principles with ‘inverted raingardens’ protect existing trees and new green infrastructure, supplied with a gradual supply of clean water from extensive permeable paving catchments.

Over two decades of experience in the UK demonstrates the long-term performance of concrete block permeable paving with minimal, if any, maintenance.

Tim will have a prominent position in the ongoing establishment and enrichment of a beautiful and complex garden scheme, which will welcome thousands of visitors each year.

“Getting stuck into the exciting new developments and seeing the site transform into an inspirational tourist attraction for County Durham and the North East is what I’m looking forward to most about this new role. “I am a self-confessed plantaholic so working with such inspirational garden designers as Luciano and Alistair as well as bringing some of my own passion and knowledge of planting to the Estate is going to be a fantastic project for me,” said Tim.

“Tim has had a glittering career as a head gardener which has taken him to far flung places, working in all sorts of terrains. His knowledge of plants is just incredible, and we know Tim will do a fantastic job as we begin our important renovation scheme at Raby Castle,” said Lady Barnard who as creative director at the castle, is leading the landscaping of The Rising project and the walled garden redesign.

From the palace of the King and Queen of Jordan to the foothills of a Caribbean mountain-side mansion, Raby Castle’s new head gardener has had a career which spans near three decades and has taken him all over the world. But since joining Raby Estates recently, Tim Marshall says he feels like he’s returned home, as he leads the transformation of the walled garden and the grounds to the north

“I was brought up in West Yorkshire so being back in familiar terrain is absolutely brilliant,” says Tim. “Not only a familiar landscape but weather that I absolutely love – rain suits me down to the ground after being in tropical and middle eastern heat for several years. I must admit that I’ve missed it.”

Tim’s new role at Raby, working closely with Lord and Lady Barnard will see him managing the two-year project to transform the area to the north of the castle, outside the paywall, to encompass landscaping around the new and renovated buildings as well as the complete redesign of the historic Walled Gardens – working with world-class garden designers Luciano Giubbilei and Richmond-based consultant Alistair Baldwin.

Tim’s first job is to recruit a new team to work with him at Raby Castle including an assistant gardener and an under gardener and is already overseeing the rest of his team of gardeners, in all aspects of the horticulturally diverse and developing garden and wider landscape areas. STUNNINGSERVICES MEADOWSURBAN

Pictorial Meadows have been at the forefront of developing stunning designed meadows for our urban spaces for nearly 20 years.

Welcoming a new CEO, Roz Davies, the plans for the future are looking bright and, perhaps unsurprisingly, flower-filled.

LANDSCAPING

2022 has been a momentous year for Pictorial Meadows, with their meadows used for high-profile projects the breadth and length of the country, from the Tower of London Superbloom to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh.

Across that time, the company has seen tremendous success in raising awareness of the benefits of designed meadows for people, nature, and our environment. Still, with innovation at its heart, it’s no surprise that the company has big plans for the future.

Resilience against drought and flood is one area the company focuses on, with multiple trials underway utilising their Sustainable Urban Drainage outdoor laboratory. “Our work with SCC on the Grey-to-Green SuDS scheme gave us valuable insights into flood resilience that we have been able to design into our meadow mixes,” says Sue France, Technical Director. Based on this research, the company will soon launch a new meadow turf, Rain Garden, that thrives in moist and wet conditions and will survive for short periods completely submerged. Alongside this, a Bioswale meadow seed mix suitable for larger-scale planting will be launched.

“I’m incredibly proud to be leading Pictorial Meadows and its parent organisation, the not-for-profit Green Estate CIC, as we look at how we can continue to support landscaping professionals, local authorities, and private landowners to create landscapes that are resilient, adaptive, and engaging,” says Resilient,Roz. adaptive, and engaging are the three concepts that drive innovation at Pictorial Meadows. Working alongside various partners, including the University of Sheffield, the company’s 14-hectare site serves as a testbed for many future landscaping approaches. As we continue to see the impact of climate change, our landscaping solutions must change with them.

Pictorial Meadow’s parent organisation, The Green Estate CIC, specialises in parks and landscape management. “Being part of Green Estate means that Pictorial Meadows can uniquely test their meadows, using Public Parks to better understand people’s responses,” explains Roz. “As we increasingly look to replace our grey cityscapes with more nature-supporting solutions, it is important that schemes are having a positive social, economic and environmental impact and engage local stakeholders in the process.”

By combining the science of horticulture and environmental management with the creativity of horticultural designers, Pictorial Meadows bring a unique solution to several landscape challenges, all while creating stunning visual impact.

I know a bank whereon the wild thyme blows, Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows’ These words are from Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream and a very apt quote as an introduction to the wonderful display of urban wildflowers that has played out in an area at Stratford-upon Avon. In 2021, Stratford-upon-Avon District Council had been receiving some negative comments from the residents that the flower displays in their town compared unfavourably with others in the county. That year, the council asked their grounds maintenance contractor idverde, to renovate an area of 2,000 sq. metres in the town’s recreation ground and sow a bed of wildflowers. For a range of reasons, sowing date, cold weather, poor germination and other factors, the result was a disappointment so the company’s contract manager Alex Colbourne turned to another supplier and contacted Andria Backhaus, the area technical manager for Rigby Taylor. In early 2022, a site inspection was made and the use of a suitable mixture from the company’s Euroflor Urban flower seed was proposed. She suggested also involving Howard Wood, an independent environmental consultant and an onsite team meeting took place to agree the way forward. Not only was the plan to make the area visually attractive but to improve its biodiversity and provide a haven and food source for pollinating insects, birds and small mammals. There were other challenges also to consider as the town is a major tourist attraction and swamped with visitors so the work had to be carried out with little disruption to those viewing the town’s attractions.

Site preparation was vital and began in early March with the cutting down and removal of existing vegetation. An application of a glyphosate-based herbicide Gallop 360 was applied in April and the ground was then rotovated four times and raked to create a fine seedbed tilth. The selected Euroflor, Rainbow Annual mixture was sown and watered daily for three weeks and germination was rapid.

The result has been highly acclaimed by residents and visitors alike with the council receiving a huge number of positive phone calls and emails; the Facebook page was really buzzing and the display was featured in the local newspaper, the Stratford Herald. Because of the positive reception received, three further areas on the recreation ground are planned for seeding with Euroflor mixtures in 2023.

To ensure a successful outcome, a training programme was instigated with Howard setting up a Workshop for idverde grounds staff involved in the project.

As Alex Colbourne commented, “the results have been amazing and it is all down to team work. We involved everyone in the project from the very start and it is their collective effort and the resulting flower display that has enabled us to achieve such a fantastic visual experience and talking point in the town Euroflor.”

urban flower seed mixtures are widely sown throughout the UK. Sown in the spring, flowering can continue until the first frosts of autumn. Apart from watering, particularly leading up to germination and early establishment, Euroflor requires little maintenance. After the hugely successful RHS Chelsea Flower Show event, the entirety of the award-winning MEDITE SMARTPLY Building the Future garden will be reused, with a large part being donated to Andover Trees United, a volunteerled environmental charity which works closely with schools and local Theauthorities.charity’s evolving woodland site ‘Harmony Woods’ represents a 10-year planting project, which gives children and young people in local communities the chance to help turn 12 acres of farmland to the north of Andover into a natural urban woodland, increasing biodiversity and providing a wealth of opportunities for learning in and about the environment.

The impressive garden structure, made with MDF panel MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME will be relocated to a local school in Andover, who Andover Trees United work closely with. The buttresses and turf will also be relocated to the community school, in addition to the selfbinding gravel featured in the garden.

In addition, half of the trees used in the garden will be donated to Andover Trees United to be replanted in Harmony Woods as part of their 10-year planting project. The remaining trees will be reused by the multi-award-winning garden designer herself Sarah Eberle, in her other garden design projects. Regarding the furniture used on the garden, artists Alex and Emma Devereux will be returning them to their site in Slough to be used. Even the fencing around the garden is to be reused. Landform Consultants, who are constructing the garden, will keep the 38 sheets of SITEPROTECT PLUS panels used in the boundary of the garden to reuse them in site hoarding of future projects.

“The construction industry needs to do more to avert the climate crisis. We need to embrace the concept of a circular economy; to reuse, recycle and refurbish existing materials to reduce waste and be more sustainable. Our engineered wood panels are an example of just what can be achieved.”

“We are extremely delighted to be donating this astonishing garden to benefit local school children and students,” commented Chris King, Managing Director – Commercial at MEDITE SMARTPLY. “To be able to contribute back to the community and educate people from a young age about the importance of trees and how they contribute positively to the climate change emergency is an incredible opportunity. The garden name ‘Building the Future’ really does encompass the ethos of the garden and its longevity. As a company, we are very proud to be taking a steer on this.

The inclusion of street furniture in residential developments or community areas will positively contribute to the aesthetics - and the safety - of the surrounding public space. Many UK towns and cities are using bollards to keep pedestrians, walkways and buildings safe. Strength and durability are the top priorities of our bollards, but we don’t sacrifice functionality for style, as we can design bollards to suit your environment. Bollards are also commonly used in parking areas to create a visual barrier to advise pedestrians where they can walk safely, reducing the risk of people walking into the path of Bicyclevehicles.racks are another way to promote a safer community, allowing cyclists to park and lock their bikes securely and stop cycle theft in its tracks. And of course, bicycle racks encourage cycling and promote an active lifestyle to benefit residents’ health.

LANDSCAPING SERVICES STREET FURNITURE KEEPS OUR COMMUNITIES SAFER

HOW

Adding benches to community areas makes the environment a more inviting place in which to spend time. If residents are using the benches, it makes the area appear busy and less isolated, which plays a part in helping to discourage crime. Clean streets provide the sense of a safer community, and strategically placed litter bins will instil community pride and help to deter littering and anti-social behaviour.

As with all street furniture solutions, durability plays a key role and items should be constructed from vandal-proof materials that can stand up to all weather conditions to maintain a positive perception of public spaces.

THORN SHINES NEW LIGHT ON ICONIC DURHAM CATHEDRAL

Sam Berry Thorn Lighting’s Head of Outdoor Sales - UK & Ireland, details, “We had to work with the existing lighting design so as not to cause any issues with Heritage England. Also, the Cathedral has archaeological responsibilities, so, we kept the existing positions, replacing the fittings and providing new bracketry.”

RGBW multichip LEDs are mixed in a single lens to give a homogeneous, perfectly blended colour output, with no multi-shadow effect on lit surfaces.

Cllr John Shuttleworth, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for rural communities and highways, comments: “ A project like this must be carefully managed and sympathetic to such a magnificent structure. The new lighting will allow people to appreciate the Cathedral at night with a new perspective.”

Locally manufactured floodlights from leading manufacturer Thorn Lighting sympathetically showcase historic Durham Cathedral. Described as the ‘best cathedral on Planet Earth’ by author Bill Bryson, Durham Cathedral, built in 1093, is renowned for its magnificent Romanesque architecture, and more recently for pivotal scenes within the first two Harry Potter movies, which were filmed throughout the Thorncathedral.Lighting, a leading manufacturer of performance lighting and controls solutions, worked with Durham County Council and Durham Cathedral to replace the site’s ten-year-old external lighting. Which was in need of a refresh due to failures and damaged lights.

The high-quality creative scheme has been developed using Thorn’s new Contrast, energy efficient floodlights, and state-of-theart control system. Ideal for sympathetically lighting historic Whilearchitecture.previously someone had to attend the site to manually install colour gels to each fitting each time they wanted to represent a special event, the new more efficient system (with an efficacy of up to 100 lm/W) enables cathedral staff to change the colour at the touch of a Contrast’sbutton.

For the lighting of the central tower, four high output floods with sixteen low output narrow beam luminaires were installed. This provided a precise beam control focussed directly onto the tower helping to minimise stray light. All wide beam floods were replaced with either narrow or medium beam optics to provide greater control and intensity of the Cathedral’s architectural features. For the Cathedral, medium beams were used on the walls and 10 x 40 elliptical beams to project light up, increasing the definition and contrast of these features.

CLASSICLIGHTING

Recognising the demand for greater flexibility and building on their commitment to delivering the right light at the right time, with these upgrades, DW Windsor aims to give designers the tools they need to tackle the ongoing challenges of urban Tunablelighting.white lighting offers a flexible, dynamic solution for night-time illumination. With two transition ranges - 3000K to 2200K, or 4000K to 2700K - the technology enables designers to more closely control the colour and intensity of light throughout the night. For example, the system can be programmed to begin illuminating at 3000K when night falls and transition to a warmer, softer 2200K overnight, when fewer road users and pedestrians are present. Additionally, warmer colour temperatures down to 2200K have been added to the Chip on Board (CoB) light engines, offering a smoother transition from the former sodium bulbs typically associated

Delivering greater versatility and functionality, DW Windsor announces innovative upgrades to its Heritage Lighting range –including tunable white technology and expanded options for controls and connectivity Leading exterior lighting solutions provider DW Windsor has expanded its popular heritage lighting range to include tunable white technology, warmer colour temperature options, Bluetooth wireless control, and improved LED efficiency.

Taken together, these new options within the range allow designers to respond to the growing market shift away from the cooler end of the colour Expandingspectrum. the connectivity options in the Heritage range was also a major focus for the upgrade, with the introduction of Bluetooth control. The wireless technology enables one-to-one adjustment or the opportunity for luminaires to communicate in a small, closed network, with no need for specialised central control modules, thus opening up greater levels of controllability for smaller-scale Energyapplications.efficiency was another key consideration, and the upgraded luminaires now achieve up to 180 lumens per watt, representing a 20% increase compared to existing Finally, options.the upgraded range also sees the addition of a new product, Windsor Urban – a highperformance, traditionally styled lantern. Inspired by the company’s flagship heritage luminaires and offering a low whole-life cost, the durable aluminium lantern is ideal for large-scale projects.

Alan Grant, Design & Development Director at DW Windsor, commented: “DW Windsor has been a trusted brand for over 45 years. With these improvements, we’re spearheading the industry’s shift towards warmer colour temperatures while also providing flexible connectivity options for greater control. All of these improvements contribute towards a more efficient and sustainable product that will benefit clients and end-users alike.” DW Windsor’s Heritage range spans from traditional Victorian-style lanterns with authentic aesthetics to more contemporary, mid-century luminaires, offering unparalleled efficiency and performance for period applications.

These high quality, bright solar lights have up-to 5yrs warranty and work well in UK weather. They have impressive outputs, illumination times and charging capacity. As well as protecting our wildlife, anti-glare light also protects us. A light should create a safe area to move around in, but glare can have the opposite effect. Anti-glare keeps everyone and everything safer, ensuring light is spread evenly in the relevant direction.

TOBROUGHTYOUBY:

SALTEX, Europe’s largest FREE sports turf, amenities, and landscaping trade exhibition, proves Britain’s exhibition scene is back to pre-Covid levels with international exhibitors and visitors from over 40 countries now signed up to attend. Such overwhelming overseas support for the show which runs from 02-03 November at Birmingham NEC, shows the strength of this event, now in its 76th year, and it’s a great indication that Britain is back to being fully open for business as exhibitors and visitors travel from as far afield as ButAustralia.what is it about SALTEX that is generating such international interest? Francesco Dotto, president of GrAssMed, the Mediterranean Groundsman Association, tweeted: “[SALTEX] is the most important green fair in Europe, for real professionals, but also for those who to approach sustainable and serious green.” He refers to, of course, the show’s focus on sustainability and the environment, key topics at this year’s show featuring prominently in the Learning LIVE seminars, with the show bringing together the best in the business from around the world and the most effective products and innovations to help tackle current issues.

Over 400 brands will be on show at Birmingham NEC from 2-3 November 2022

Geoff Webb, CEO of the Grounds Management Association, says: “There promises to be a diverse visitor profile this year, we know there are visitors from over 26 countries already. We had a good show last year with our post-show visitor survey, showing that 83 percent of attendees rated SALTEX 2021 overall as excellent, very good or good, and 67 percent of those saying they attended specifically to purchase new products or services, and 84 percent either had full purchasing responsibility or contributed to the process. These are great stats, but we knew that it was post pandemic and people were longing to get out and meet up again but to continue this momentum is really encouraging.”

This is certainly a view shared by SGL, manufacturers of grass growth products such as grow lighting systems and data monitoring tools based in The Netherlands – and just one of many international businesses exhibiting at this year’s show.

The latest advance from manufacturer Hozelock-Exel, which follows extensive trialling, further enhances operator safety and protection to include cushioned strapping on Cooper Pegler’s Classic and Series 2000 knapsack models.

“This is a global initiative,” says Allan Wainwright, Hozelock-Exel’s UK Sales Manager, “which aims to make our knapsack brands fully inclusive for all spray operatives.”

The cushioned strapping is introduced at a time when more sports venues and amenity sites are reducing the quantity of treatment liquids they apply in a bid to improve their green credentials.

Golf course greens teams report they are using knapsacks increasingly for spot-spray weed control, a practice that cuts the quantity of liquid applied Moresignificantly.knapsack hand spraying raises the importance of operator comfort to new levels, therefore. “Those who spend a full day knapsack spraying will find the new cushioned straps more comfortable,” Allan adds, “reducing the stresses and strains possible on the body during extensive sessions in the field.”

The Advantages of Moving Data Online The main advantage of moving data online is accessibility. It’s there whenever you need it, wherever you are. With a system like GrasPro, all of your information is in categories, so it’s quick to find exactly what you need. No more rummaging around notebooks or figuring out what’s the right spreadsheet. Once you’re set up, you really see the benefit of quickly accessing your categorised data, setting and measuring KPIs, and being able to share information with your grounds team, coaches and facility managers instantly. This benefits everything from sharing notes related to upcoming fixtures and quickly comparing and analysing using graphically presented graphs, charts and tables.

THE VITAL ROLE OF SPORTS INPLATFORMSMANAGEMENTPITCHTHEFUTUREOFTURF

The second vital role of pitch data is decision making and change. Having comprehensive pitch usage and quality data goes a long way to informing the future of your pitches. How many games can they take in one week? When do they need to be aerated? How much water do they need?

Being the Change Through Data

Data has always been a part of professional sports turf. For decades grounds people have made notes on paper about their maintenance. As time passed, the paper turned into spreadsheets and has evolved into online pitch management platforms such as GrasPro. This shift has been down to advancements in pitch technology and the expectations that come with it. Simply put, to get the best out of their investment, pitch managers need to know precisely what is going on with their pitches. Using a data management system to do this helps collect and track that data and allows for enhanced decision-making and early detection of issues using historical data. As an industry, we are still in the relatively early stages of data platforms, but they have already made an impact; below, we look at the six vital roles of pitch management systems in the future of turf.

SPORTS & PLAY

The Ability to Bring all of your Data Under One Platform The popularity of data collection can be seen in its availability. If you buy a weather station or grow lights, they will typically come with data collection software. Whilst this is helpful for that particular tool, you can lose the benefit of having all of your data in one place. A solution for this is using an independent platform like GrasPro, which has the largest range of data categories available. Having all of your info in one place means you can analyse and report on it in conjunction with other data to deliver the big picture you need.

What’s the Future of Pitch Management Systems? A significant role in the future of pitch management platforms is development. Automating the data collection is the next logical step in making it a more efficient process. This can include everything from automatic water readings to machinery sensors that track machines’ usage. Eventually, this can lead to automatically generated daily, weekly and monthly reports for a truly streamlined process that delivers everything you need to know.

Data is a Team Effort This one is less about the vital role of data and more about the team using it. Gathering data regularly is crucial for analysis, and it is a team effort. With everyone involved – whether at the same facility or venues across the globe – having a group of people adding to a system provides more comprehensive data. It also has the added benefit of engaging those collecting. It helps them understand a bit more about how what they are doing is making a difference, and this can be especially helpful in educating new staff. Making Pitch Maintenance a Green Machine It’s already proven that collecting data is vital for sustainable turf maintenance, and the importance will only grow in significance. In 2020 The Sustainability Report published by Touchline stated 83% of football fans care if their clubs impact the environment. The report also found that sustainable stadiums cost 31% less to operate. When it comes to pitch maintenance, working sustainably can be done simply by only using exactly the amount of water and fertiliser you need, not spraying on windy days or by finding the optimum amount of time to use grow lights etc. The savings this can make whilst helping the environment are considerable and, in some cases, can even lead to finances being available to purchase battery powered mowers.

RINK

126 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine

To keep pace with the requirement for more frequent topdressing, the club purchased a Rink DS800 delivered by Charlies Groundcare, in the spring of 2022. The DS800 features a 0.8m3 hopper capacity, variable spreading widths of between 2m and 12m, and spreading thicknesses of 0.5 to 15mm for optimal versatility and effectiveness. “Previously, we were using a fertiliser spinner which did the job but was very small and meant repeated trips backwards and forwards to the shed to collect material which was ¾ of a mile away from the furthest green! We looked at a couple of different models of

To complement the Rink, Ascott also purchased a Redexim Speedbrush which Andrew says is proving to be a brilliant piece of equipment – not just for working in dressing. “We’re finding more and more things to do with the Speedbrush, from dispersing clippings to clearing moisture and standing the plant up on the surrounds to improve the quality of cut. All of this, together with the increase in topdressing are already making a huge difference to the course.”

“The time it now takes us to get around all 18 greens has more than halved, and as a small team of just three, it frees up all-important labour to be working on other tasks. It’s already completed one pass in April and where we would normally do just one more in September, we’ve actually decided to do an additional dressing on all 18 greens mid-summer as well as some work on the tees and surrounds which would just not have been feasible before.”

The arrival of a Rink and Speedbrush from Redexim has transformed topdressing for the team at Arscott Golf Club – turning a task that would have previously taken 14 hours into one that’s complete in just four! The labour-savings and convenience brought about by their new DS800 now means that Head Greenkeeper Andrew Lewis can topdress more frequently and in more areas around the site, bringing further benefit to the condition of the Shropshire Andrewcourse.

Together with changes to the course, Andrew has seen changes in trends and maintenance techniques over the years – topdressing included. “Where we would have previously been putting two ton’s down on a green and working it in, now it’s all about little and often dressings that work down in just a couple of days.”

Caring for the lawn Mowing a lawn, is also taking care of it. You will get the best results if you use a high cutting blade speed and low driving speed. If the grass isn’t too long and dense, you can increase the driving speed without any real negative effect on the cut.

TOP MOWING TIPS FOR RIDE-ON MOWERS

more effective cutting and a proper discharge of clippings. But it’s also important to remember to start with a high cutting height and reduce that down until the grass is as short as you’d like it. Any grass over 6 inches long (15cm) should be mowed at least twice at different lower cutting heights.

For longer grass, you should reduce the driving speed to ensure you get

With the launch of the EGO ZT4200E-L Z6 Zero-Turn Ride-On (ZTR) Mower, Vince Brauns, Group Product Manager of EGO, shares his top tips for getting the most out of a ride-on mower. A ride-on mower can offer various mowing opportunities! With the launch of the Z6, the world’s first battery-platform compatible zeroturn ride-on, those possibilities continue to grow. But to make the most of a ride-on mower, users should remember the following important tips...

For the healthiest lawns, it’s best for you to mow more often once it has achieved moderate growth.

128 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine TOOLS, PLANT & EQUIPMENT

Check everything before any cut As always, you should read the manual before using any new rideon mower, to ensure you are familiar with every aspect of the machine. After that, it’s important to check that the blades are sharp for a clean cut and professional finish to your lawn, especially if you’ve got tall grass that needs cutting.

Remember to remove stones, sticks, wires, and other objects on the lawn which could damage the mower’s cutting blades or motors. If damage does accidentally happen, you should safely inspect the mower for any damage before starting back on the lawn.

To achieve a healthy lawn, you should cut off only one-third or less of the total length of the grass. In cooler months, it’s recommended to keep a lawn around 1.5 to 2 inches long (3.8cm to 5cm). But during warmer months, you want to increase this to between 2 to 3-1/4 inches (3.8cm to 10cm).

A world’s first

In the event the tyres lose traction at any point, disengage the blades and proceed slowly down the slope.

The ZT4200E-L is the world’s first zero-turn ride-on lawnmower that is compatible with EGO’s awardwinning battery system. It can be powered by any combination of EGO 56V ARC Lithium Batteries which can be charged by the industry’s fastest 1600W charger that is capable of charging up to six batteries at once.

TOOLS, PLANT & EQUIPMENT

To find out more about the ZT4200E-L Z6 Ride-On Mower and all of EGO’s latest range of mowers, visit https://egopowerplus.co.uk/products/mowers

Mow cautiously and never drive near drop-offs, ditches and embankments for obvious reasons. It’s tempting but you should always drive slowly without suddenly changing speed or direction. You should also consider whether to mulch, side-discharge or collect grass cuttings as most good ride-ons will give you a choice of all three. Bagging is usually the preferred method for domestic lawns. It means you can cut in almost any weather, and it helps to remove weed seeds from the lawn. Mulching, on the other hand, allows you to return nutrients back to the lawn so is ideal for those that are looking a little unhealthy. It also allows the lawn to retain moisture, prevents weed growth and helps to keep the soil temperature even. Side discharge allows for a faster cut but can sometimes throw seeds or clippings into flowerbeds or on to nearby paths. Take care on the slopes

The ZT4200E-L can reach speeds of 8MPH and can cover 3 acres on a single charge with six 10Ah batteries.

www.landud.co.uk 129Follow us @ludmagazine

Riders should try not to turn on a slope, but if it’s necessary, do it carefully and always turn downhill.

Ultimately, you shouldn’t mow any slope they feel uncomfortable on – if it doesn’t look or feel safe, it’s probably not!

Sloping terrain can be dangerous to operate on. Remain cautious when working on a slope. For safety, avoid mowing slopes that are steeper than 15 degrees.

When mowing on a slope, mow up and down and never across. It’s advised to avoid stopping on a slope but if you absolutely must, use the parking brake. And when restarting the mower, you should use the lowest possible speed.

During the cut While on a ride-on mower, new or thick grass requires a narrower cut or a higher cutting height. Tall and thick grass can hide obstacles, so be sure to check that there’re no holes, rocks, bumps and hidden objects that could damage the machine or indeed yourself, other people or pets and animals that might be within its Wevicinity.also recommend not cutting wet grass unless you have to as you can lose control of the mower and cause damage to it when the wheels sink into the soft lawn. (Wet grass also sticks to the underside of the deck and prevents proper bagging or mulching of grass clippings).

“The EVO was installed in July by our local dealer Thurlow Nunn Standen and Julian Cullis of GreenMech, who delivered some outstanding training to the team that was on a par with – if not better than, some of the official woodchipper courses available. Although we’ve only had it a few weeks, the operators love it! The first major thing they commented on was the ease of manoeuvrability and access, meaning we can position the 205D exactly where we are working which saves a lot of time. Secondly, the feed rate is drastically quicker with this machine… the teams just can’t keep up with it!”

130 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine

“There isn’t really much the team haven’t been impressed with. The build quality is fantastic and from a usability perspective, you can tell that GreenMech have really thought about what the operator wants and needs from a woodchipper.”

Matt adds, “This EVO 205D will be fundamental to our new willow replanting and rotation programme which will help give us the quantity of wood and chip we need to continue our sustainable site management programme.” www.greenmech.co.uk

The Babraham Research Campus, one of the UK’s leading locations for academic and commercial bioscience, have taken delivery of an EVO 205D SAFE-Trak to keep pace with the site’s demand for wood chip and weed suppressant. The 100-acre campus sits within an additional 360 acres of estate land, maintained by Estates and Waste Manager Matt Antrobus and two ground teams – all of whom have been mightily impressed with the power, performance and build quality of their new woodchipper from GreenMech’s EVO series.
