2022’S HOTTEST OUTDOOR LIVING TRENDS Outdoor Kitchen Expert, has revealed the hottest outdoor living trends for 2022. According to the company, which designs bespoke outdoor living areas, 2022 will see homeowners going to ever greater lengths to blend indoors with outdoors and to make outside hosting easier by merging entertaining spaces with eating and drinking areas. Wellbeing will also be an important consideration, woven into everything from the pleasing tactility of natural furnishings to the calming scents that wash across our outdoor spaces.

4

www.landud.co.uk

Smart Master of Meteorology 2022 will be about making outdoor living spaces smarter in every sense. Smart outdoor kitchens are a natural progression from smart indoor kitchens. Families embracing outdoor tech can use smartphone apps to do everything from changing mood lighting settings to controlling weather-resistant smart TVs and projectors that remain hidden away until required, or integrated surround sound AV systems connected to their chosen streaming service.

In terms of appliances, Wi-Fi enabled BBQs, grills and smokers are now available, meaning families can cook to their exact specifications direct from their smartphones. Smart fridges can be installed in outdoor kitchens as well as Bluetooth controlled heating features, such as fire pits and wireless smart heaters. Homeowners looking to go the extra mile can also consider high-tech canopies. Enabling use year-round, the canopy blades can be adjusted at the touch of a button to track the sun or tilted to catch a breeze. Follow us @ludmagazine

GARDEN DESIGN reinventing how they live and play together. The vast list of covetable features (LED mood lighting, sound systems, hot tubs, saunas and perfect grilling and entertaining spaces, to name just a few), means that families can create multigenerational spaces that deliver wellness for the whole family. “Outdoor living spaces can deliver a holiday-style vibe that indoors just can’t match. Indoors, we must deal with chores and practicalities, but being outside is about being free from domestic duties and spending time together focused on fun and wellbeing – on laughter. We can have it all in the back garden, creating a mini-holiday feeling that combats the uncertainty that seems to pervade every other area of life right now. It’s about creating a space that feels safe, where a family will never tire of being at home, and that means creating something multi-use that will appeal to all generations.” Jo Aird, Co-Designer and Client Liaison, Outdoor Kitchen Expert

Sensory Exploration Nature has an abundance of materials that can deliver sensory experiences. With so many materials to choose from, families can focus on how they want to feel in their outdoor living spaces and then build sensations and emotions into the space around them through the furniture they choose. “It’s an interior design truism that we treasure what we touch and there’s so much scope to enjoy this in outdoor living spaces. The knotted, grainy tactility of hard woods can deliver a wonderful sense of relaxation and of being at one with nature. Reclaimed wood, meanwhile, provides that feeling of using nature’s resources wisely, while rich cedar oozes glamour and cool granite feels heavenly to the touch. There’s a whole sensory journey just waiting to be put together!” Duncan Aird, Founder and Designer, Outdoor Kitchen Expert

Rain sensors can also automatically close the roof to keep from a passing rain shower. “As indoor/outdoor living blends, we predict that more families will seek ways to master the skies by adopting smart technology that makes the weather work for them – tilting canopies to collect a breeze or angling to extend the sunshine hours. Clients are finding new and exciting ways to extend their entertainment time through amazing smart technology, heating and lighting options.” Duncan Aird, Founder and Designer, Outdoor Kitchen Expert

GARDEN DESIGN Edible climbing plants scaling trellises, herb walls built into and around outdoor kitchen and dining spaces, planters overflowing with flowers that wash the area with relaxing scents… it’s all about creating a space that feels harmonious and natural. A space where firing up the smoker or charcoal barbecue, or grilling over the fire pit delivers an earthy, glamping-style experience that acts as a sensory detachment from daily life.

Love the great outdoors all year round Winter doesn’t have to mean we’re confined to spending time indoors. Far from it. From bespoke outdoor fireplaces and firepits to infrared heaters placed in optimum locations, Outdoor Kitchen Expert is used to creating outside entertaining spaces that families can love spending time in year-round. The team is skilled at designing outdoor living spaces that deliver ultimate luxury, shaped around the particular desires and preferences of each individual family. From bespoke bars and kitchens to luxurious pampering and wellbeing areas, the team carefully curates the perfect, bespoke outside space for each client. “Why should curling up to watch the stars while sipping a cocktail be something we can only do during the summer months? With such an array of energy-efficient patio heaters, Wi-Fi controlled heaters, in-table fire pits and other products on offer, outdoor living spaces can enable us to indulge our love of being outdoors at any time of the year.” Jo Aird, Co-Designer and Client Liaison, Outdoor Kitchen Expert

Wilding Nature will also come into play in other ways in 2022 when it comes to embracing the best of outdoor living. According to the Outdoor Kitchen Expert team, wilding will be one of the biggest trends of 2022, as families look to disconnect from indoors but still enjoy the comforts

of home. Bird song and ambient lighting, when combined with a mobile phone blocker that filters out external distractions but still allows full control over outdoor smart features, can go a long way towards creating a sanctuary that delivers an escape from modern-day chaos.

Outdoor living spaces can do everything from creating a sense of holidaying at home to adding value to a property. With another year ahead where living and entertaining outside remain a key priority for many families, we’re likely to see these trends embraced in homes across the country in 2022. And not just in homes, according to Outdoor Kitchen Expert’s predictions, as commercial spaces jump on the outdoor living bandwagon too. Follow us @ludmagazine

“Companies are having to work harder to make staff want to go into the office these days. What better office perk for 2022 than being able to enjoy using an outdoor kitchen on your lunchbreak and socialise safely with colleagues? I believe this is going to be a top trend for leading companies when it comes to making their commercial spaces more appealing over the course of this year.” Duncan Aird, Founder and Designer, Outdoor Kitchen Expert

HOW TO CREATE THE IDEAL INDOOR/ OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE

COME RAIN OR SHINE Many of us view our home and garden as two separate entities, with a firm boundary in between. However, linking these two spaces to create the perfect indoor/outdoor living zone can make both areas look and feel bigger – regardless of the size of your property. With the unpredictable British weather, it’s important to consider practical solutions that will provide adequate shade and shelter throughout the seasons, from heatwaves in the summer to torrential rain, wind and snow in the winter.

10

www.landud.co.uk

Add a canopy or awning Thought to be more versatile than gazebos and parasols, the addition of a canopy or awning is one of the quickest, easiest and most affordable ways to transform any outdoor space. Both practical and stylish, either of these easy-to-use external shading products will act as an extension of the roof of your property, offering instant shade and shelter from the sun and rain showers, whilst also withstanding wind speeds of up to 30mph (in some cases). If a manually operated system doesn’t appeal to you, opt for

an electric motorised awning that you can extend and retract at just the touch of a button.

Install a pergola Modern pergolas with either sliding/retracting fabric or rotating aluminium louvered roofs (and sides) offer a more pragmatic and long-term solution to awnings and canopies. Whether it’s in the form of a freestanding structure within your garden or adjacent to the house as a direct extension of the property, a pergola is a simple yet effective way to give the impression of an outdoor Follow us @ludmagazine

GARDEN DESIGN

‘room’ and provides complete flexibility to the user. If you already have a veranda or pergola that needs a bit of a re-vamp, why not consider highperformance external blinds that can be mounted to the top and sides to effectively shield from the elements and create a cosy and pleasant environment all year round?

A canopy or awning with a lower projection will be sufficient enough to cover a small outdoor dining table, however, if you’re part of a big family that likes to entertain al-fresco on a regular basis, a larger projection is highly recommended! Most pergolas come in standard sizes; however, some companies offer a customised design service and will be able to meet any specific requirements you may have by working to a bespoke brief.

Consider what your outdoor space will be used for

Customisation is key

To help you decide which type of external shading will work best for you and your outdoor space, you need to consider a number of factors such as any obstructions (trees, fences and guttering), the position of the sun when it sets/ rises and finally, what your patio or garden will primarily be used for.

To help create a comfortable indoor/outdoor living space that can be used all year round, invest in additional personalisations such as ambient white LED lighting that can be dimmed to set the scene for a romantic meal or turned up for a family gathering; infra-red heating that can be zone controlled; coated

premium fabrics that generate a ‘self-clean’ effect and even weather sensors that can automatically retract a motorised awning if strong wind speeds are detected. Whilst higher quality and more premium outdoor structures will already be designed to withstand heavy rain, gale force winds and even snow, opting for sliding glass, windproof zip screens or separate entrance doors will not only ensure complete control of the elements, but provide the ultimate luxury allweather outdoor living space, 365 days a year.

Utilise all technology Finally, the latest technology means you can manage every element of your outdoor shading system digitally, from either a single remote or via an app on your phone. As long as you have a Wi-Fi connection, you can open and close the electric roof on your pergola in real-time (or set a timer to do it automatically), turn the lighting/heating on and off and even view the exact position of your pergola or awning – from anywhere in the world!

TOP THREE TRENDS IN DECKING MARKET Decking areas are being designed with lighting, heating and shade factored in so that the space can be used year-round. It is often the finishing touches that take a deck to the next level in the eyes of homeowners. For instance, adding edging to decking allows you to easily incorporate under-lip lighting for a really professional finish to entertaining spaces. Also, built-in seating using the same material can create a pared back, aesthetic with the illusion of space – very useful for smaller urban gardens. We have also seen a rise in projects using more than one colour to make decking the focal point of an outdoor space and we are seeing more and more creative colour combinations and laying patterns to provide that impact. We’re also seeing people think hard about sustainability and building things to last. Buyers are being more discerning when they choose materials – they want to know what they will look like ten years down the line. Will they enhance their outdoor space long term? Will it be difficult to maintain? Millboard decking ticks both the longevity and low maintenance boxes.

Caroline Birdsall, Director of Marketing at Millboard, describes the top 3 trends they have seen developing in the decking market over the last 12 months.

12

www.landud.co.uk

Perhaps unsurprisingly, we have seen a huge increase in homeowners wanting high end, ‘show-stopping’ areas for dining and entertaining outside over the last 12 months.

We’ve also noticed that the popularity of TV garden design programmes means homeowners often have a firmer idea about what look and feel they want because they’ve seen it used on TV. This means they want choice, and in decking terms that means having different colours and textures available, from the charred Japanese look to bleached driftwood and all points between. Millboard’s Enhanced Grain range has been extremely popular this year, as homeowners look to create a modern urban garden vibe, but we offer a wide range to deliver the choice consumers demand and expect.

www.millboard.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine

Nature enhanced, for unreal results. Every now and then, something comes along to knock an original off its pedestal. Welcome then to Millboard decking. Through continuous research and development, meticulous attention to detail, expertise and innovation we’ve created a board that’s hand-moulded from natural wood – and we think it could be better than the real thing. It won’t rot like real wood, warp like real wood or attract mould like real wood. It just takes the best of real wood and enhances it. Beautifully. Millboard: Live. Life. Outside.

2022 GARDEN TRENDS 1. What type of trends are we likely to see in gardens this year? Gardens have become even more central to the way we live and relax. 2022 is set to see our passion for outdoor living continuing to develop. This year’s key trends are driven by our desire to spend more time socialising and unwinding in our outdoor spaces; creating opportunities to make these places our own. The nation’s renewed passion for growing and sustainable living is seen on one of the most important trends - Rustic Resilience. Reconnecting with the natural world, reducing our impact on the world and waste are key themes, seen in vibrant gardens packed with

18

www.landud.co.uk

raised beds, vertical planters and pots of seedlings. Recycling and reusing natural materials is important, and products like Ronseal’s Garden Paint can be used to transform and up-cycle everything from furniture to sheds.

As we head in to 2022, colour schemes are wide and varied and at the heart of key trends. With the Rustic Resilience trend, there’s a new love for muted, natural tones – dark greens, earth colours and deep shades of intense red.

The joy of travel and escape is reflected in what’s set to be another popular trend - Exotic Escape. As we turn to our gardens to provide a blast of bright colour and joy when we want to get away from it all. Think Moroccan-inspired shades, patterns and furnishing, decorated with vibrant fabrics, stunning plants and gorgeous outdoor lighting.

For those embracing Exotic Escape, colour is everything - the brighter the better. Think clashing yellow and orange, hot reds, and pinks and, of course, plenty of vivid greens. If you’re looking to give discoloured wooden furniture, decking or fences a new lease of life, a great way to do so is through applying some stain as this will have a long-lasting effect and really bring out the shine in your wood.

2. Are there any particular styles/ colours you’re expecting to become popular?

Follow us @ludmagazine

GARDEN DESIGN 3. What types of installations do you expect to be popular in gardens? The idea of getting together around a fire has really taken off and we’ll continue to find new and evermore stylish ways of doing this in 2022. Fire pits, wood burners, pizza ovens are all in high demand, including everything from homemade options to rustic clay and sleek, or industrial metal choices. Recessed fire pits, built into decking and other seated areas, are set to increase this season and provide a focal point for garden gatherings.

4. In terms of plants/flowers, what’s going to be key in 2022? Home-grown produce and cottage plants are going to be hugely popular with those embracing the Rustic Resilience trend. For Exotic Escapers, plants are big and eyecatching - choose bedding plants that provide instant colour or large potted plants and palms, including greenery that can be brought inside when the temperature cools.

5. Are there any themes that people are set to follow in 2022? E.g., sustainability, outdoor living etc The natural world is at the heart of most emerging new trends - whether that’s embracing it or protecting it. Across the board, sustainability, and the need to consume mindfully is a focus for planning and design. Celebrating the natural world - whether through an urban veg patch, amazing planters or inspiration for outdoor fabrics and furnishings is the motivation for many. The need to find space and solace is also huge, with households of all kinds looking to create places that are calm, private and beautiful.

6. Ronseal’s Senior Product Expert Jimmy Englezos explains how vibrant outdoor spaces are more important than ever when it comes to enjoying and adding value to our homes. How important do you think the garden has become for potential buyers in recent years?

Follow us @ludmagazine

Living through the pandemic has meant spending much more time at home and making the most of our outdoor space. Gardens and outdoor areas of all kinds are at a premium, with house buyers increasingly thinking about exterior as well as interior design. As the line between outdoor and indoor living continues to blur, we expect to see more people embrace live plants indoors, and making the most of their outdoor space for al fresco entertaining.

7. What types of things are buyers looking for from a garden? Buyers are looking for several things - a place to relax and be calm, room to spread out and expand their living area (especially if indoor space is cramped) spaces to house their hobbies and interests. Room for outdoor structures like home bars, offices and summer houses are also in demand.

8. What advice would you give to someone looking to sell

their home when it comes to preparing the garden? Buyers will be keen to put their own stamp on a garden but showing them the potential of a space is important. Investing in good quality cleaning products will help remove mould, dirt and algae from walls, furniture, and decking, and get them ready to re-paint or re-stain. Ronseal has an extensive range of easy to use, weatherproof products that will keep wood looking its best for viewings - whatever the time of year.

9. What are some of the best ways to add value to a home through the garden? Neat, clean spaces, a lawn and separate decked and other outdoor living areas will all maximise your garden’s appeal - and add value to your home.

GARDEN DESIGN

WHAT IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY WORTH? How much is your environmental policy worth? In monetary terms, probably very little; in terms of attracting business and doing the right thing, an environmental policy is priceless. Of course, costs are incurred and some are irretrievable but, as a business, can you afford not to have an environmental policy in place? What does an environmental policy mean to you, existing clients and potential clients? Is it worth the cost to implement and adhere to?

20

www.landud.co.uk

At Provender Nurseries we have found that talking to our clients and team members about our green credentials has really proved its worth in many aspects, both monetarily and in terms of giving our teams on site a framework that is of value to them and our business ethos as a whole. Following recent conversations at trade shows and talking with new customers, an active environmental policy backed up by strong credentials are attractive qualities

to potential customers and qualities that are commonly searched for. An environmental policy is, to all intents and purposes, nailing your colours to the mast in the public realm. A brave move indeed, as a good environmental policy should be implemented, reviewed and updated on a regular basis. Since 2010 Provender Nurseries has been gradually improving its green credentials as a supplier and as an operational business. Follow us @ludmagazine

GARDEN DESIGN Following our website upgrade in 2018 we went public and included our environmental policy on our website, partly in response to questions we were being asked on a regular basis from all angles. Our Prevent, Reuse and Recycle policy was created as a result of these conversations and is our Environmental Policy in all but name. In 2019 we set up an environmental group comprised of staff from different parts of the company to reflect across the board how having green credentials are applicable in all areas of running a business.

In 2022 we aim to review our Prevent, Reuse and Recycle policy to include the following: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Review, Remove and Reinforce.

Recycle. We recycle all soft plastics and cardboard used in packaging. These are baled up and sent to be recycled. We also recycle timber and metal products.

Reduce. All company vehicles are EURO 6 compliant, reducing our carbon emission. Our purchasing team now purchase by full lorry loads to further reduce our carbon footprint.

Review. We regularly review our suppliers for their green credentials. Following a review of the sundries stock held on site, we created Going Green, a range of products that are either organic, wildlife friendly or have natural ingredients as their main components. Our sundries purchasing team review all new products to see if they fit under the Going Green category.

Reuse. Pots over 10L, that have been supplied by Provender Nurseries can be returned to us for reuse on site.

Remove. All of our deliveries on Danish trollies are now protected by green trolley jackets, removing the use of single use plastic wrap. Reinforce. Regular staff training on site and regular meetings of our environmental group keeps everyone on site up to speed with any changes made. Some procedures that we have implemented on site are not immediately apparent including the installation of LED lights across the entire site and the increased usage of biological controls on site reducing the need for chemical application. From a customer point of view, the most common topics we are asked are about pots, compost, water and transport. All of which are essential to the trade nursery business.

We feel that water will become a more important issue as time goes on. Recent developments at the nursery now allow us to collect and recycle water onsite, collected from our barn and polytunnel roofs. Our resident irrigation specialist sings the praises of our weather stations on-site resulting in a more efficient use of water for irrigation. In the near future, we will be installing Xylem pumps to irrigate plants. Compost and the use of peat is the hot potato of the industry with opinions very much divided. We found that many of our customers were looking for plants in peat free compost. Delayed by the

ADVISING ON DECKING MAINTENANCE

If you’re in the landscaping trade, one of the frequent concerns that project owners have about installing decking is that it requires regular maintenance. It is always good practice to manage client expectations from the start – nothing is truly maintenance free, but the degree of maintenance depends on what you choose to install. Providing the project owner with the information they need to make informed decisions about what’s best for them can really set you apart from other suppliers.

How often does decking need to be ‘maintained’ Whatever decking material is used, it is always a good idea to observe a few rules and preventative measures all the time, rather than just once a year:

24

www.landud.co.uk

cooking fat, berries or animal droppings.

Use a stiff outdoor broom to remove debris from the surface. Algae will grow on surfaces where there is light, moisture and nutrition so best to avoid any build up. Like any surface, quickly remove anything likely to stain, such as

Be aware that decking placed underneath trees may result in sap on the boards which is difficult to remove, as well as frequent bird droppings! Cushioning the feet of outdoor furniture can help prevent scratches Placing a firepit/chimenea/brazier directly on the boards can result in damage – use a scorch proof material, just in case.

and oiled like natural wood, yet it still looks the part because it is hand-moulded from carefully selected oak timbers to produce a completely natural-looking grain. Millboard requires only occasional cleaning – around twice a year – and just with soapy water, so it could be the solution for any client who has reservations about warping and fading or sanding and oiling.

Timber decking Make your client aware that timber decking will fade and warp over time if left untreated – it is important that they understand this from the outset. Take time to explain the measures that you are taking to reduce the likelihood of this. In addition to the above measures, timber decking will require regular cleaning and oiling/ staining to protect it and keep it looking good. Not all wood is the same – for instance oil can’t be used on certain hardwood decking like teak or balau wood. This is because Follow us @ludmagazine

it is already naturally oily and has a very dense grain that can be hard to penetrate.

Composite decking If your client is shying away from the idea of regular oiling and staining, composite decking could be the answer they are looking for. For example, Millboard offers a wide range of wood-look decking which is stunning to look at, sound in all weathers and simple to look after. Its polymer resin construction means that it doesn’t rot, warp or twist, and doesn’t need to be sanded

Trusted adviser Being able to help a client make the right decision for their circumstances can help to make you their trusted adviser, and one they are likely to recommend to others. Setting out the pluses and minuses that different options is a better recipe for long-term, repeat business than clients having their expectations unduly raised only to be disappointed later.

A WATER LANDSCAPING RANGE THAT WORKS IN COMPLETE HARMONY

AND GIVES YOU PEACE OF MIND OASE are passionate about water, from private gardens to large public installations. And now they bring their expertise and technology together with their water landscaping range. Whether you have a large space to fill with an impressive fountain display or can only fit in a smaller feature, OASE has the answer. Their modular system offers truly unique levels of water creation. It also benefits from decades of innovation and research into creative designs using water.

28

www.landud.co.uk

Copper Bowls OASE’s stunning Copper Bowls are an attractive feature that work in any outside space. There are five different shapes and sizes of bowl that can be used by themselves or in combination with each other to create an attractive cascade. From smaller bowls holding just 50 litres of water to the largest bowl that holds 90 litres there’s the right bowl for your design. Some of the bowls have spillways to direct the flowing water, whereas the Round 90 bowl is designed to allow water to flow evenly over the entire circumference. All bowls can be

used standalone or together to create a stunning cascading feature. The bowls can be used with a hidden underground reservoir so that they appear to blend in seamlessly with their surroundings. Warm white LED lighting can also be added to really make these displays come alive at night.

Corten Cubes New for 2022, OASE are launching two Corten Steel Cube features onto the market. They create an eye-catching design in any outside space. They are available in two sizes - Cube 60 CS (600 mm x 600 Follow us @ludmagazine

GARDEN DESIGN mm x 600 mm) or the larger Cube 90 CS (600 mm x 600 mm x 900 mm). The smaller Cube has smooth edges which allows the water to flow evenly around it and the larger one has two channels that direct the water into the reservoir below. Both features are available with LED lighting and have the option to add a stand to create the impression the feature is floating. Like the Copper Bowls they can be used in hidden reservoirs or as part of a larger water feature.

Pond Free There’s no longer a need for large open water reservoirs when creating flowing streams. By using OASE’s Maxima water matrix blocks in lined excavations, these weightbearing underground water storage reservoirs can be used as the base for numerous types of water features. They support landscaping, paving slabs, or gravel for great design versatility. Pair with a natural stream, a copper bowl cascade, or a traditional rock feature to bring

Follow us @ludmagazine

stress-free water to any outside space. To work alongside these Maxima blocks OASE offers Pump Vaults. These robust structures give easy access to the pump technology to aid maintenance.

Reservoirs When space is really at a premium, OASE’s self-contained reservoirs can be used. Two are semi-circular and designed to work with waterfalls and hold 125l or 160l. There are also three stand-alone reservoirs that hold 75l, 120l and 255l. All the reservoirs have grooves on the upper side which mean hoses can be laid easily and without forming kinks. They all provide easy pump access to aid maintenance. The reservoirs can hold up to 550kg which allow you to produce water features with a wide range of stones or ornamental features.

Waterfalls Waterfalls are always eye-catching. In combination with gently splashing water and optional LED lighting

they can create an almost magical atmosphere. OASE offers ready-made waterfall kits in an elegant stainlesssteel design that can be easily installed onto a pool. Or if space is at a premium, waterfall units can be added to self-contained reservoirs to create a localised feature. The addition of a stainless-steel Silent Splash, available in three sizes, will prevent water loss, minimise excess splashing and reduce noise.

Lighting Combine any of these water elements with impressive LED lights to really make your features come alive at night. OASE’s LED lighting is available in a range of options from single spotlights to multicoloured controllable RGB units. OASE’s modern LED technology offers particularly flexible design possibilities as they can be submersed in and around the water feature as well as being installed on terraces or paths. Lighting can even be added to a waterfall.

Water Technology OASE don’t just offer the decorative features required to create an impressive display with water. They design and manufacture all the components you need; from LED lights to highlight the display into

the night to feature pumps designed to move over 40,000 litres of water an hour and create fountains up to 10 metres high. Some of the technology is also Wi-Fi controllable so that features can easily be adjusted from a smart phone.

Want to add water to a project, but not sure where to start? OASE are available to help. ‘OUT OF THE SHADOWS’ KATE GOULD’S RHS CHELSEA SANCTUARY GARDEN

A LESSON IN POST-PANDEMIC GARDEN DESIGN Our post-pandemic gardens are being asked to work harder for us than ever. They are being tasked to not only grow plants, but also to provide an outdoor extension to our homes where we can relax, exercise, entertain and eat. Kate Gould’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show Sanctuary

32

www.landud.co.uk

Garden, ‘Out of the Shadows’ is a lesson in how the pandemic has changed the concept of the garden, with even the smallest now being tasked to serve multiple functions and incorporate modern lifestyle needs. ‘Out of the Shadows’ is one of the RHS’ ‘Sanctuary Gardens’ and is a small, contemporary garden

which packs a huge punch in terms of the lifestyle it delivers, in a perfectly tranquil and harmonious way. The garden features a stateof-the-art Jacuzzi swim spa for exercising, spaces for seating and relaxation, climbing bars, and a yoga/ meditation space all elegantly situated amongst dramatic and exotic, tropical-style planting.

Follow us @ludmagazine

GARDEN DESIGN Kate Gould said; “As we (hopefully) come out of the pandemic, people have certainly become more mindful about creating safe spaces they can hunker down in. They are thinking outside the box in terms of what they want their gardens to deliver when it comes to outdoor living, and they are often not sure how to achieve this within a traditional garden model. With ‘Out of the Shadows’ I want to show people that if they want a swim spa for example, or a space to do yoga, they don’t need to choose between having that and a beautiful garden. It doesn’t need to be an either/ or choice. Have a swim spa, but make it chic. It is as much about coming out of the shadow of the pandemic – and all the ways that has elevated the importance of our gardens – as it is about coming out of quite narrow, traditional views of what a garden needs to be. It can work on so many different levels and clever design choices can marry up lifestyle needs.” When it comes to the gardens’ planting scheme, evergreens form the backbone of ‘Out of the Shadows,’ overlaid with a tropical theme. The evergreen focus references how we now want to use and enjoy our gardens 365 days a year, a throwback to lockdown which saw gardens act as indispensable safe havens even in the cooler months.

HOW TO PREP FOR SPRING The end to winter is in sight, days will become brighter and lighter for longer and gardening experts are sharing how to prepare gardens for Spring. Green-fingered experts at GardeningExpress.co.uk are giving Brits tips on the garden jobs which need to be done to prepare the outdoor space for Spring. Now is the perfect time to head out into the garden and begin to get it ready for the warmer months. And after the chilly days and nights, our gardens will need a bit of TLC before we begin spending some time in them again. Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress said: “Most of us won’t have used our gardens over winter and before getting back out into them, there’ll be some tidying up and other maintenance that needs to be done before we can enjoy the beautiful Spring.

36

www.landud.co.uk

“Knowing where to start can be overwhelming but a lot of these jobs can make a massive difference to the way your garden looks. Things like trimming the edge of the lawn and cleaning the patio instantly make your garden look sharper and brighter. “Taking care of these things now means that by the time the lovely weather comes around, your garden will be looking beautiful for you and your family and friends to enjoy.”

GardeningExpress’ garden jobs for Spring: 1. Tidy up Start by having a general tidy around your garden. Pick up any fallen leaves and start removing those unwanted weeds and clear up any other mess that may have been left behind from last year. 2. Prep your soil Soil will begin to dry after the winter season and it’s good to prep it if you plan on planting some seeds and bulbs over Spring. Simply fork over the soil and add some fertilisers to ensure that the soil is filled with nutrients. 3. Don’t forget about your lawn A beautiful lawn is key to a gorgeous garden. To achieve this, try going around the edge of the lawn with sharp shears to give it a much neater look.

Follow us @ludmagazine

GARDEN DESIGN

4. Clean your shed and greenhouse Chances are your shed and greenhouse may have the odd cobweb in there after not being used over the winter so it’s a good idea to give them a good clean before you get back out for Spring and Summer. If you’re feeling ambitious you could even give your shed a new coat of paint to brighten it up! 5. Clean your garden furniture Whether you leave it out or store it away you’ll want to give your garden furniture a good clean before using it again. Soap and warm water will generally remove most dirt but if

you find your furniture has grime or other stains on then try mixing baking soda with some warm water. Apply this with a sponge to the furniture and then rise off with some warm water. 6. Clean the patio Cleaning the patio is often a job that’s avoided but you’d be surprised by how much of a difference it’ll make to the look of your garden once clean. Pressure washers are a great solution but another great tip is to mix together a cleaning solution that is made up of vinegar and water and let it sit on the patio for around 20 minutes. Scrub it off with a heavy duty brush.

7. General maintenance While you’re at it take a look around for any general maintenance that may need doing. Perhaps one of your fence panels needs repairing or you have a couple of pesky uneven slabs that need sorting? 8. Clean your tools Before you get back into the swing of gardening, spend some time cleaning your tools and try to keep this up throughout the year. Giving them a quick clean once in a while is much easier to maintain than if you were to let the dirt on them build up.

PLANTERS AND SEATING FOR ROOF GARDEN – WANDSWORTH Our Grenadier versatile planter was selected as it offered the best flexibility and value for money. The products consisted of perimeter raised planters, raised timber edging, bench seating and a large, central, slatted timber island bench unit. The scheme included a large raised central area with artificial grass lawn and perimeter wall mounted Henley benches. Wandsworth roof garden

Street Design were specified to manufacture and supply the products for the creation of a roof garden in Wandsworth, as part of a new residential development. The landscape scheme was drawn up to create a communal, multiuse area that included, private residential terraces, planting areas,

a lawn, seating, and a play area for young children. The outdoor space offered residents in the apartments the opportunity to spend time outside, relaxing, playing, and meeting up with other residents, creating a living community

The central area also featured a large, raised island unit with slatted lounger bench seating and a circular tree planter. All products were supplied in FSC Certified treated redwood and were manufactured and fully factory assembled before being supplied in pre-assembled sections for reassembly on site. PLANTERS AND SEATING FOR ROOF GARDEN – WEMBLEY PARK Landscape architects Fabrik specified several Street Design roof garden products for a new residential development on behalf of Quintain.

As an important part of the project, the roof terraces provided residents with an outdoor space for relaxation, exercising and entertaining family and friends.

The project was the building of a new apartment block, within the Wembley Park development, that included a number of outside roof garden terraces.

The landscape scheme included an outdoor kitchen, raised planting areas, seating, shaded areas and a large outdoor cinema screen.

The main contractor, McLaren Construction appointed Frosts Landscapes as a sub-contract landscaping contractor for the construction of the roof terraces.

Street Design’s Stratum versatile aluminium planter was specified with the addition of some integrated Sheldon versatile slatted timber bench tops. The planters were supplied with a dark grey polyester

powder coated finish, with natural FSC Certified hardwood bench tops. Additional seating was incorporated into the perimeter raised brick planting areas that included straight and angled wall mounted Sheldon benches, manufactured to coordinate with the planter seating. The Street Design planters and seating were installed to work alongside the other roof garden items that included pergola structures and slatted screen fencing.

BENCH SEATING – EVERARDS MEADOW Street Design were specified to manufacture and supply the external bench seating for a new mixed-use development on behalf of Everards Brewery in Leicestershire. Everards were keen to integrate outdoor leisure areas with the retail space and a preference to make the retail areas available to independent operators. The scheme involved building a new brewery with bar, restaurant and shop and a separate retail and leisure area comprising independent coffee shop and cycle retailer.

Follow us @ludmagazine

Working with the project landscape architects, Street Design produced product designs and developed them through a series of product proposals and cost evaluations. The seating design was finalised to include a range of bench products to suit the requirements of the landscape scheme. The benches were supplied with FSC Certified iroko hardwood slats with galvanised and powder coated bench legs and armrests. The benches were surface fixed to new paving areas.

The project was built in two stages. The first being the creation of the leisure and retail development, following by the construction of the new brewery complex.

STREET FURNITURE

HOW DOES STREET FURNITURE POSITIVELY IMPACT OUR TOWNS & CITIES? Benches, bollards, bins, planters and pergolas tend to go unnoticed but they’re all important to our daily lives. The right street furniture makes an urban space more inclusive and attractive. Having enough benches, for example, is important for the elderly when deciding where to go – and for anyone else who might need to sit and rest. Bins result in far less litter, which helps with maintenance and makes the environment more friendly to everyone. When choosing and designing street furniture, our team works closely with Architects and Specifiers to focus on the people who will be using it and on how each item will “live” in the space: •

When people walk around it, what will their alternate route be?

Will it change the way they socialise?

Will it make maintenance easy and not get in the way?

Will it maintain or enhance safety and security?

Will it look great and feel like a cohesive part of the broader design?

42

www.landud.co.uk

Choosing the right durable materials, street furniture lasts a long time and is not easily damaged. It usually doesn’t require much upkeep, aside from general cleaning and occasionally some paint or other coating, so the value it adds outweighs any cost almost immediately. Here at Harlestone Projects, we have a long history of designing and manufacturing street furniture for residential and commercial spaces that creates fantastic experiences for people - and makes communities and developers proud. Let’s talk about the street furniture you need – whether it’s one bench or a whole new development! You can reach our expert team on 01604 586000.

STREET FURNITURE the entrance to the Elephant Park play area, and feature hundreds of individually shaped timber slats over a powder-coated steel subframe, with anti-slip discs and concealed lighting channels ensuring the finished result is both practical and beautiful. However, the star of the show is the incredible waved seating designs, which were developed from the initial concept to the intricate masterpiece now in place, designed to seat users in varying positions and heights to make the most of its’ location. Several seats were created, culminating with a 9-metre long seat that’s become sculptural in appearance, with swooping contours and impactful use of the materials making this so much more than just seating. The ‘broom yellow’ powder-coated steel framework houses specially designed lighting trays to allow illumination between the slats and wiring provision to allow for inbuilt charging points in the end panels. Between the hardwood slats, a range of possible materials were sampled resulting in polycarbonate diffusers that work perfectly with the lighting units, providing a warm glow that really integrates the seats with their surroundings. Individual hardwood slats become a sturdy but flowing shape via a joint designed especially for this project, with each piece being manufactured using Woodscape’s unmatched CNC capabilities and seamless hand finishing. Everything about the street furniture produced for Elephant Park was a labour of love worthy of the area, sure to be admired by residents and visitors alike, and Woodscape hope to continue to play our part in future phases of this epic project.

modern purpose

We were asked by Rexel Bootle to quote for 43 Traditional Style Feeder Pillars, all finished in Black & Gold livery for the Princes Boulevard STEP Scheme which is now complete.

EV Charging - Regeneration - Parks - Sports & Leisure

This £4m scheme forms part of Liverpool City Region’s Sustainable Transport Enhancement Package (STEP) and focuses on the regeneration of the central reservation along Princes Boulevard and upgrading the carriageway and footpaths along Princes Boulevard and Princes Road. By installing the 1km long cycle path within the central reservation - a first for Liverpool - the scheme’s aim is to improve cycle connectivity between south Liverpool and the city centre, with the plan to install a new Citybike station along the route. The new cycle path would also form an extension of a new ‘green corridor’ to Otterspool that is due to be delivered in the next 12 months. The URBAN Green UP project has £3.4m of EU funding to install and test three ‘green corridors’ across the city, which was a key recommendation in the city council’s Strategic Green and Open Spaces Review.

We have a range of styles, finishes and sizes to suit all purposes and budgets. With our Bespoke build and Pre-Wired services we’re your 1st choice for high quality Feeder Pillars and Electrical Enclosures. Call us or visit the website for more information.

We are really pleased to have been involved with this project. WT Jenkins installed the Feeder Pillars and the images of the completed project are fabulous. We hope the residents of Toxteth and everyone who will be using this innovative link to Liverpool City Centre love it, it certainly looks amazing and we congratulate Liverpool City Council and all who were involved with this scheme.

SUDSPAVE 40 POROUS PAVING INSTALLED FOR ATTENUATION POND AT WAVERLEY GATE DEVELOPMENT

Sudspave 40 installed, filled with soil and seeded to provide service vehicle access to the detention pond

The Waverley project in Rotherham is Yorkshire’s largest ever brownfield mixed-use plan, transforming 740 acres of the former Orgreave coal mining site into a sustainable development that includes up to 3,890 homes, shops, restaurants, a school and leisure and community facilities, including parks and 310-acres of green open space. Project developer Harworth appointed contractor CR Reynolds to carry out drainage and earthworks for the Waverley Gate area of the scheme, including a striking new attenuation pond. Attenuation ponds are a common feature on residential developments and the design forms part of the overall SuDS plan for managing storm water run-off across this area of the site and reducing downstream flooding. The pond also provides attractive amenity space for the new housing estate’s residents. In order to provide a sustainable and

functional vehicle access route for servicing of the pond, ABG’s Sudspave 40 porous paving was specified. The Sudspave 40 permeable paving has a grassed surface and also provides a safe, green corridor away from the road for pedestrians and cyclists, whilst enabling surface water to infiltrate into the ground. The design proposed by ABG includes Abgrid Geogrid and Terrex NW geotextile which combine to reduce the required DoT Type 3 sub-base thickness, whilst also providing layer separation and bio-filtration of surface water. The pond also utilises ABG’s Claymat clay liner, installed to retain water within the basin. The incorporation of ABG’s permeable paving design provided an attractive, serviceable access route and shallower construction profile, resulting in reductions in site excavation, off-site tipping, stone deliveries and associated costs.

ASSISTING THE GREEN RECOVERY AND NET ZERO CHALLENGE A nationwide approved, accredited supplier and installer of urban green solutions, providing optional soft landscaping, irrigation, aftercare maintenance, with an online shop to cater for smaller projects or DIY.

Ivy Green Screens are supplied in a variety of species and heights. The Green Screens are pre-planted in a coco pocket and pre-grown on a 5mm galvanised steel frame and come fully established, creating a secure and attractive evergreen or deciduous hedging, with various installation options. An Ivy green screen boundary fence is more sustainable compared to a wood fence. Not only does it last longer than a wooden fence, but Green Screens are also produced in a sustainable way. Ongoing research shows that the Ivy Green Screens, superior in plant density and construction, help remove PM10 particle pollution, in

48

www.landud.co.uk

some sample locations up to 60% of the particles were “cleansed” from the air behind the screens. Research continues to further validate these findings, but increasingly, the installation of Ivy Green Screens offers not only a secure and natural privacy screen and social distancing barrier, but a valuable solution to reduce the negative effects of urban pollution.

Our most popular living wall is manufactured in England, from 100% recycled materials. This Living Wall product is incredibly versatile and comes in individual troughs that are lightweight, quick, and easy to install with a click and stack method for any configuration. It also benefits from low maintenance and a clever water indicator that tells you when to fill up.

Scientifically proven to filter harmful pollutants Our products contribute to

cleaner air and biodiversity, thus providing an abundance of health and wellbeing benefits. Moreover, a nurturing, pollution filtering green space for children, as our installations of green screens in schools, demonstrate. Integrating more urban greening products into society will contribute to the green recovery, the net zero carbon pledge and air quality now and for future generations. GREEN-TECH PROVIDES PROTECTION FOR OVER 6,000 TREES AND SHRUBS AT NEW URBAN VILLAGE

Linmere Park is an exciting new ‘urban village’ situated on Green Belt land to the North of Houghton Regis near Luton, close to the new J11A of the M1. The ethos of this new centre for South Befordshire is all about wellbeing, and healthy outdoor living. Over the next fifteen years more than 5,000 homes are planned, along with four new schools: three primary and one secondary. What sets this development apart is the refreshing amount of green space. The role of ‘design lead’ was awarded to Barton Willmore, one the UK’s leading architectural practices. They worked with Land Improvement Holdings and their partners to deliver a vision to fulfil a need for more sustainable housing, as well as providing a versatile environment centred around core social values, health, and well-being. To achieve this, over 30% of the entire site has been allocated to open space for sports, recreation, amenity, and the enhancement

50

www.landud.co.uk

of biodiversity. This equates to a total of 192 acres (78ha) of green space, as opposed to the traditional 6-acre provision. With tree lined pedestrian and cycle routes linking various parts of the development, the emphasis is on safe access to green space for all members of the community.

Frosts and Green-tech Involvement: One of the UK’s longest standing landscape contractors, Frosts Landscape Construction was awarded the landscaping and ground works. Much of which involved the ground preparation for the grassed areas as well as planting of several thousand trees and shrubs. To protect the newly planted saplings from wildlife damage and the environment, 500 spiral tree guards were supplied, along with over 6,000 shrub shelters and mesh tree guards. The last thing any contractor wants when they have planted several thousand trees, is for them to be decimated by the local animal population! Green-tech’s Tubex

Shrubshelters help in the early years of planting, offering excellent protection from grazing wildlife, whilst providing a micro-climate within the shelter to aid early growth and healthy establishment. The Shrubshelters also have an integrated tie for quick and easy stake fixing and can be collected and recycled as part of the Tubex recycling scheme. For the plants that need a bit more room, the Mesh Tree Guard has a 12mm plastic netting with an open structure that allows airflow and more natural climatic conditions, whilst still protecting the young tree from grazing animals. Having worked with Frosts for over 15 years, Green-tech was delighted to be able to supply all the necessary guards and shelters from stock. We also supplied over 7,000 tree stakes, controlled release fertiliser and Mycorrhiza Rootgrow.

NATURE BASED SOLUTIONS TO REDUCE ENERGY COSTS For more than 40 years Platipus® has been helping to improve tree canopy coverage in urban areas using its unique tree anchoring and irrigation systems. Apart from giving a beautifully natural aesthetic and having minimal interference with the rootball, these systems ensure that the trees are safe and secure.

The benefits of a strong urban tree canopy are well documented, some of the most important include, having significant stormwater retention capacity, helping to reduce pollution through carbon sequestration and various economic benefits.

Did you know that the evaporation from a single tree produces the cooling effect of ten standard air conditioners operating 20 hours a day and that this results in a 6 to 8 degree lowering of the surrounding temperatures when compared to areas without trees?

Did you know that where an entire street is lined with trees, the houses can have their value increased by up to 25%?

Additionally, tree windbreaks can reduce heating costs by 10 to 15%, whilst the shade and evaporation effect can reduce residential air conditioning by 20 to 25%.

With energy prices surging, we need to look at how we can lower our energy bills. When it comes to trees, one of their most useful benefits is their natural ability to provide shade and insulation to reduce energy consumption.

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE Did you know that unlike other major cities that call themselves cities with gardens, Singapore is considered a city within a garden, that is lush with tropical greenery created through not just onstructure tree planting, using the D-MAN System, but also a variety of living walls? These walls bring their own fantastic benefits, including the improvement of local biodiversity, helping to purify the air around us, reducing noise levels, adding value to property and just generally improving wellbeing.

To make it easier to benefit from this, Platipus developed the first purposebuilt tree anchoring system for roof gardens, urban and shallow planting environments. With nestable, lightweight and compact anchor points, the award winning Platipus D-MAN System has made it easier to plant and anchor trees in almost any situation. This unique solution requires less labour and installation time compared to traditional methods. Costs are also reduced and this, coupled with superior quality, has ensured that tree anchoring remains as safe and easy as possible. This has also encouraged the inclusion of tree planting in urban designs and helps to support landscapers and gardens around the world.

of Landscape Solutions and to do more to help customers reduce energy costs. From their travels to Singapore and other leaders in urban greening, it became clear that a living wall solution was needed to give customers access to vertical greening. This resulted in the development of the Platipus G-WALL® Modular Living Wall System.

Did you know that living walls can increase the real estate values by up to 20% and significantly improve your workplace productivity and patient recovery times in hospital? And just like trees, living walls also help to reduce energy costs. Studies have shown that the surface area of a living wall, installed on a building,

is up to 10 degrees cooler ensuring that less heat travels inwards and significantly decreasing the use of air conditioning. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) estimate that approximately £6M was saved on air conditioning costs, in London, simply through a reduction of demand, of up to 30%, on buildings with living walls. These walls also act as layer of insulation during winter, reducing the reliance on heating by up to 12%. These are tangible benefits that offer quantifiable financial savings. Every area, no matter how small, has some vertical space, be it a wall

or other suitable structure, that is perfect for populating with plants. The Platipus G-WALL is an easy to install modular system that will allow even the most inexperienced gardener to transform bare boundaries or spaces into vibrant colourful living walls. The system requires no batons, hanging grids or membranes for installation and its unique integrated jigsaw design allows for easy vertical or horizontal expansion to suit any available space. G-WALL is made from recyclable plastic and has a 25-year design life which means your contribution to reduce energy costs remain effective and vibrant for decades.

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

AN INNOVATIVE SUDS SOLUTION FOR FLETTON QUAYS Situated on the edge of the historic Fens, Peterborough has a rich heritage. Settled by man over 3500 years ago, with a cathedral dating back to AD655, there are plenty of reminders of the past, and recognising this, the City has many listed buildings including the old railway sheds and the 19th Century Whitworth Mill on the banks of the River Nene. The clay sub-soil in the Fletton area proved perfect for brick making, and this became a major industry in the city - the beginning of the Fletton brick, now widely used across the country. The arrival of the railway in 1845 meant that transportation of the bricks became simpler and

56

www.landud.co.uk

Peterborough East Station was built and a goods yard constructed on the south bank of the River Nene to service the city’s expanding business trade. The station closed in 1970 and the land between the railway line and the river was used for various commercial purposes for the next 40 years. Identifying the potential of this riverside site with amazing views to the Cathedral, Peterborough City Council allocated this area for highquality mixed-use development. With views across the river to The Embankment open space, only a short walk across the Town Bridge to the city centre and less than a mile from the mainline railway station,

the site was ripe for redevelopment – with the restoration of the old listed buildings and construction of new ones. With much of the city low lying, stormwater management can be a challenge. Peterborough City Council encourages innovative thinking in the using of sustainable drainage systems, and the adjacent river available for water discharge made the new development an obvious good fit. Although the original plans were to use a conventional piped stormwater system, alternative methods were investigated and the GreenBlue Urban ArborFlow tree pit system was chosen. Follow us @ludmagazine

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE Sustainable drainage features were implemented across the whole development, using both rain gardens and tree pits between and around the buildings to attenuate and clean the rainwater from the hard surfaces and roofs. The GreenBlue Urban StormForm panel system allows for a fast inrush of stormwater preventing localised flooding, and directing the water down into the bio-remediation soil, allowing slow percolation giving optimum water treatment and pollutant removal. The trees are protected by the GreenBlue Urban Precast tree grille, allowing gaseous exchange for the soil, and giving additional drainage for times of exceedance flow. Harrison Stevens, the landscape architects, worked closely with Peterborough Investment Partnership and their engineers and planning consultants to design a scheme that worked hydraulically

as well as visually, and the whole development has won several awards for the quality of the project, which was constructed by Bowmer and Kirkland during the period spanning 2016-2020.

The success of the project is obvious – Peterborough City Council has moved into the restored engine sheds, and the public realm has matured beautifully, offering green spaces for the enjoyment of all those who live, work and play here. As the trees grow, increasing in canopy size and density, they become more and more efficient in dealing with stormwater and in providing shade and heat mitigation – a truly resilient development, designed to cope with whatever climate change throws at it.

DON’T LET LIMITED ACCESS LIMIT YOUR OPTIONS The current rate of new home construction in the UK cannot keep pace with inner-city population growth; not only are not enough houses being built, but space restrictions in inner cities also prevent new developments. A new home built today would have to last 1000 years at current replacement rates. Without new housing, people in the UK will have to make the most of the existing housing stock.

How can homeowners in cramped, urban housing get in on the Outdoor Living trend? A simple solution offered by Azpects Ltd is EASYClickBase, a synthetic sub-base that significantly reduces the traditional ‘dig-out’ part of the installation process for patios, paths, and driveways. Early feedback shows that for a 50m2 patio EASYClickBase requires an excavation of around 2-4 tonnes and just 2-5 tonnes of a fine replacement aggregate depending on site

62

www.landud.co.uk

conditions. Traditionally, this would require the excavation of 16 tonnes of waste by-products, and the import of 16-20 tonnes of traditional subbase aggregates, requiring either heavy machinery or a significant amount of labour. Several early adopters of EASYClickBase have reported trimming day’s labour off the expected completion time while giving their clients the garden they have always wanted. EASYClickBase is lightweight and easy to carry, making it easy to install even with restricted access. The reduced dig out makes wastage less of an issue for tight streets that lack space for a large skip, as smaller skip bags can be removed by a flatbed vehicle instead. Manufactured from 100% recycled ABS plastic, any offcuts of EASYClickBase tiles can be recycled

again, further reducing waste and improving the sustainability of hard landscaping projects. If lockdown taught us anything, it is how important outdoor spaces are for our physical and mental wellbeing. With a significant percentage of the UK workforce expecting to continue to work from home at least part-time, it seems likely that investment in hard landscaping will only continue.

POINTING / GROUTING / JOINTING EXTERNAL PORCELAIN TILE PAVING The key to the successful jointing of external porcelain paving is to use an equally high-performance jointing material, and one which is easy to apply and to remove and clean residual jointing material from the porcelain surfaces. Traditionally, cement-based tile grouts are used for porcelain tiles on internal walls and floors which is fine, but for external porcelain paving, these cement and so-called ‘hybrid’ (means cement with a bit of polymer added), tile grouts are sufficiently durable for long term external exposure to weathering - Great inside, but not outside. There is also the issue when outside exposed to direct sun, that dense,

64

www.landud.co.uk

impermeable products such as porcelain, have limited adhesion to cement mortars, and so shrinkage cracking and debonding due to normal thermal movement is highly likely in the joints – the last place you want to see cracks is in your porcelain paving. Cement-based pointing products today are polymer modified to counteract cement shrinkage, but this makes them very sensitive to any residual water in the joints that will negate any claimed low shrinkage figures on the product data sheets (an old concrete technology joke – lab-crete versus site-crete), this concern, together

with the limited adhesion to dense porcelain, and the fact that these problems are more likely in smaller joints, such as the typical 3-6mm for porcelain, this is obviously a concern. Cement products are also difficult to remove from porcelain surfaces after finishing, usually involving additional cleaning and treatments to remove the ‘cementhaze’. The best solution for porcelain paving jointing is not an internal tile grout, but a high performance, 2-part, epoxy resin bound, graded fine alluvial sand based jointing system.

Follow us @ludmagazine

CONCRETE & STONEWORK

The right product for the job depends on the type of stone, the size of the paving and the dimensions of the joints. i.e. 2-part, epoxy resin based, GftK vdw 815+ or GftK vdw 850+, for joint widths from >3mm, or >5mm respectively, which are undoubtedly the best products we have seen for durable external porcelain tile jointing / pointing. This materials technology, and these specific high-performance paving jointing products are designed to be extremely durable and resistant for the long-term, just like external porcelain tile paving.

Porcelain needs non-permeable pointing, unless on a permeable bed… This is a widespread myth, possibly originally perpetrated because in most of the original / traditional porcelain paving countries, which lie around the Mediterranean, porcelain paving is jointed / grouted with impermeable, cement-based tile grouts that will retain their appearance for

years into the future – in these climates. However, this is the UK, our green and pleasant land, where the climate, gardens and building standards are very different. Patios, terraces, and any other outdoor areas of tiled paving, in both domestic and commercial premises will tend to become green, stained or discoloured far more quickly, and will require jet wash cleaning, even porcelain! The suggestion that porcelain tile grouts must be non-permeable when laid on full concrete beds rather than consolidated granite chippings as prevails in Italy and around the Mediterranean, is also a bit of a ‘red herring’. The UK’s only fully independent source of paving information, including information on use of external porcelain paving explained this in some detail in an excellent article https://www.pavingexpert.com/ faq_permeable_mortars_01 Therefore, this myth is also untrue. Like all external paving in the UK, the porcelain tiles should be laid to recognised falls, ensuring water run-off away from property and / or into adequate surface drainage provided. The now established UK method of laying porcelain with a bonding slurry (usually SBR) on the backside, and placing directly into a full wet mortar bed, also prevents any possible theoretical water underflow and frost delamination. UK’s exclusive agent and distributor of GftK’s vdw 2-part epoxy mortars (they are wet-slurry applied and are not so-called ‘brush in’s) are now used extensively as the pointing / jointing mortar with porcelain paving throughout the UK. This proven UK track record now extends beyond 7 years, which is significant given the very recent growth in porcelain paving, and in our opinion also, there is no issue in the UK using permeable jointing mortars on relatively impermeable bases. Permeability is also a question of degree, as both bedding mortars and/or concrete bases are also always permeable to some extent. This is especially true using a typical 5 or 6-1 bedding mix.

GftK Paving Joint Mortars - Ideal for Porcelain

GftK paving joint mortars are mixed in the pails as supplied, poured onto the pre-wetted porcelain surface, and ergonomically applied standing-up, using wet-slurry techniques with a squeegee and more water. They flow easily across the porcelain surfaces and effectively self-compact into the joints - You can’t use too much water at this time! - After a few minutes, any excess water and mortar is easily removed with a soft coconut fibre brush and a final rinse = Job Done! With GftK there is: No waiting for the bed to fully cure – No waiting for the weather - No measuring components - No water addition - No concerns over wet joints - No waiting to clean up - No washboy - No haze - No efflorescence! GftK’s 2-part, epoxy resin based paving joint mortars are fast and easy to install, including in cold and wet weather conditions. They produce a sheen and stain free, porcelain surface with shrink-free joints that are also highly durable. Also importantly, the whole paved surface can be jet washed as often as required to clean and maintain your new porcelain paving in pristine condition!

CONCRETE & STONEWORK

CHARACTERFUL PENNANT SANDSTONE Outdoor space took on a whole new meaning recently, when we were all asked to work from home if we could. Landscapers leapt at the opportunity to provide many of us with a dramatic new look for that previously ignored space that suddenly we had so much time to study. Seating areas, patios, water features, firepits all started popping up, and it would appear even now, that the whole country is still just as keen - to keep up that momentum. The characterful pennant sandstone, robust in its nature but diverse in its application from drystone walling, to building and paving stone, has been a very popular choice with both the client and the landscaper. Pennant Sandstone, available from Birch Hill Quarry in the Forest of Dean has a multitude of uses. Most recently the quarry has begun producing a coursed building stone, sawn top and bottom, cropped and then tumbled through a huge rolling drum to smooth the edges, making the building stone easy to lay and quick to form a uniform walling. In contrast the ‘random cropped’ walling produces a more natural, rugged finish, a wellliked product especially when mixed with a sawn coping to create that striking contrast, yet by using the same pennant sandstone complimenting. www.stonequarries.co.uk

CONCRETE & STONEWORK

MODULAR PAVING FOR CHANGE The pandemic has heralded a fundamental rethink about our public realm, showing that a fresh approach is needed to designing the spaces between buildings with multifunctional and long-life but adaptable solutions, ready to meet climate change and other developing requirements – as the trade association Interpave explains. Apart from temporary measures for social distancing, the pandemic accelerated implementation of issues raised in the past but put on the back-burner. They include ‘active travel’ (walking, cycling and the ’15-minute neighbourhood’), ‘low traffic neighbourhoods’ (reflecting previously adopted home zones) and reinvention of the high street (responding to the growth in on-line shopping). However, a range of wider concerns centred on climate change also need to be addressed in an integrated

68

www.landud.co.uk

approach, such as flooding, watercourse pollutants, carbon reduction, air pollution and urban overheating. Measures to deal with these issues are now being implemented by local authorities through planning policies.

Replacing Temporary Measures During the pandemic, local authorities acted quickly with temporary measures for cyclists and social-distancing pedestrians, manifested with a sea of cones, barriers, road-closures and surface planters. Inevitably, these measures were far from ideal and many have proved unpopular. Hurriedlywidened footways with upstand kerbs running along the centre are just one example. Now, a more flexible approach is anticipated with permanent but adaptable paving solutions, applicable both to regeneration and new developments.

Adopting the principles of ‘modern methods of construction’, factoryproduced modular concrete paving offers a solution, delivering fast, lowcost installation, including limitedintervention retrofits. Importantly, layouts can easily be altered and modular concrete paving taken up and re-used to meet changing demands, while meeting ‘circular’ economy’ criteria. This principle generally applies to all precast concrete block and flag products. Distinct, modular units and designed variations in colour, texture and shape can break up areas giving visual interest and a human scale not possible with monotonous, formless materials. So, modular concrete paving delivers a unique combination of predictability, safety and accessibility for all, with scope for endless variety in shape, scale, colour and texture to enrich the urban environment creating real ‘places for people’.

CONCRETE & STONEWORK Sustainable Drainage Urban flooding from rainwater runoff and surcharging sewers is a growing problem with climate change. In response, concrete block permeable paving is becoming far more widespread as a uniquely flexible sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) technique. It provides an inherent drainage system with no additional land take for water storage, treatment or conveyance, and eliminates pipework, gulleys and manholes – therefore costing less than conventional drainage and paving. Essentially, this technology shares the same impressive performance as conventional modular concrete paving products, being slip resistant, durable, strong and sustainable. The difference with permeable paving is enlarged joints, filled with a permeable aggregate, and the materials used below the blocks, which are specifically selected to accommodate water without clogging. Concrete block permeable paving is unlike – and not to be confused with –permeable materials, which behave very differently.

Gradual Supply of Clean Water But there is more to permeable paving than just flood protection. Over decades of successful use, the technology has demonstrated a wide range of other benefits and multifunctionality. Concrete block permeable paving offers a

real opportunity to trap vehicle pollution from water runoff and offers designers the exciting potential of a gradual supply of treated water that can be integrated with landscape design to promote biodiversity. It also provides clean water at the head of the ‘SuDS management train’ enabling safe, open SuDS features on the surface, downstream. Concrete block permeable paving can be laid level – and still avoid puddles and potholes – or adapt to slopes. It provides a safe, firm surface for everyone, including wheelchair users and people pushing prams, unlike gravel and other loose materials. It is also the preferred option around trees, rather than tree grilles, according to BS8300-1 (2018).

Sustainable Regeneration One important innovation, particularly for regeneration, is the retrofitting of permeable paving as an overlay, making new use of existing, conventional road bases or other hard surfaces below and their embedded carbon. These lowintervention, thin overlays create attractive, safe and sustainable shared-surfaces. They can be particularly effective when used to supply a gradual flow of clean water horizontally into raingardens, bioretention areas or tree pits, nurturing trees and other green infrastructure.

Green infrastructure will be a major influence on the public realm in future, with ever more investment in urban tree planting announced by national and local government, supported by policies at all levels. For example, the July 2021 ‘National Planning Policy Framework’ states that: ‘Planning policies and decisions should ensure that new streets are tree-lined and that opportunities are taken to incorporate trees elsewhere in developments’.

Permeable Paving and Trees in Harmony However, measures need to be put in place to nurture and allow trees to mature, generally for decades, enabling them to actually deliver their real potential – including net carbon storage, urban cooling through shading and evapotranspiration, biodiversity and public wellbeing. So, the NPPF also requires that: ‘appropriate measures are in place to secure the long-term maintenance of newly-planted trees, and that existing trees are retained wherever possible’. Local planning authorities will now need to incorporate long-term tree maintenance measures in their planning consents. Here, permeable paving, providing irrigation and essential air supply (with CO2 release) to growing tree roots, so avoiding surface damage by roots, offers a straightforward spatial solution. Although urban trees and paving have traditionally been seen as in conflict, this is not the case with concrete block permeable paving which works in harmony with green infrastructure.

A SAFE FUTURE As we begin the new year it is certainly not new news that the UK faces a continued and significant threat from international terrorism. There have of course been well published attacks against protected sights across the globe however crowded places remain an easy target. Accessible and readily available crowded street scenes remain an attractive prospect for serious disruption to society and loss of life. Last year the government set out a proposal, a new Protect Duty, that it is to be a legal requirement for public places to ensure preparedness for future terrorist attacks. The commitment is to improve the safety and security of public spaces and venues. These proposals have been ignited by victims’ groups such as the Martyn’s law campaign established by Figen

70

Murray, whose son tragically died in the Manchester arena attack that took place in 2017. Home Secretary Priti Patel said: I have heard first hand from those who have sadly lost loved ones in horrific terror attacks, and thank them for their tireless work to ensure others do not share their tragedy.

This Government has already taken significant steps to amend our powers and strengthen the tools for dealing with the developing terrorist threats we face, and we will always take the strongest possible action to protect our national security. That is why we want all organisations responsible for public venues and spaces to put public safety and security first. Follow us @ludmagazine

measures necessary to prevent Hostile Vehicle Mitigation HVM should not really diminish the look and feel of an open area, it must still be welcoming and attractive if our towns are to survive.

Crowded places include shopping centres, sports stadia, bars, pubs and restaurants. When considering appropriate protection against terrorist attacks, city planners and designers need to apply urban design principles that have been tried and tested alongside new technologies and design. It is important to avoid allowing our townscapes to become standardised and fortified, we must retain all the features that allow our communal spaces to be attractive. We need our cityscapes to be safe and secured as well as tailored to local people and the special features of their areas. Each area may need to feature invisibly integrated components, such as bus shelters, lamps, planters, cycle stands and benches, alongside some purpose designed public art or sculptural pieces. The physical

Good urban design is essential, it creates a place of inclusivity that people want to use, well designed spaces have both character and identity, they have clear access for the public, ease of movement is of course important alongside a clear distinctiveness that can adapt to life.

Planning and planting can create such spaces, both making our concrete areas safer and healthier. A city with well-planned and wellmanaged infrastructure becomes instantly more resilient and in turn so do we. Communal spaces are vital for everyone, we all feel the benefit. They should be easily accessible, and allow us to meet within our communities in a safe environment. A beautifully designed landscape

combined with clever street furniture design offers not only a great use of space but creates the opportunity to add a safety layer often missing in traditional city design. Knowing we are safe can improve morale and productivity of city workers through psychological benefits. Bailey Furniture Group have designed INSPIRA PROTECT a modular planting system featuring a reinforced structure designed particularly for Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) offering both security & protection to pedestrians and infrastructure without compromising on the aesthetic value of our spaces. Each reinforced structure is IWA 14-1:2013 rated and provides a reinforced housing to obstruct hostile vehicle attacks. The planters start at W:1000 x L:1500 x H:450mm but can be scaled up where required, the range enables a modular design and can complement the Inspira range. Each module is available in a range of finishes and has minimal maintenance.

INCORPORATING TREES

INTO URBAN DESIGNS From filtering urban pollutants that aid the offset of carbon emissions, to improving individuals’ mental and physical wellbeing, the installation of living trees as part of urban environments continues to be extremely popular. Here Chris George, Business Development Manager at Howe Green, explores the key considerations that landscaping professionals should address at the initial design stages to ensure the highest standards of safety, functionality and aesthetics. When planting trees or saplings into urban environments, ensuring adequate root management, achieving regular access to water and maintaining the soil condition must be considered at the very beginning of a project. One of the most cost effective and efficient methods of incorporating living trees into landscaped areas is the installation of external tree pits and tree grilles.

74

www.landud.co.uk

Benefits of tree pits Featuring impressive structural integrity, stainless steel external covers ensure the tree roots are securely contained within the tree root ball. This removes the opportunity for roots to spread up and across the landscape, eliminating any potential damage to the paved flooring and subsequent trip hazards. The addition of lifting keys can also provide safe and secure access to the tree root ball for regular maintenance, in addition to concealed entry to any required electrics, valves and pumps, without impacting the overall aesthetic of the scheme. They also provide long term resistance to rust and corrosion to deliver increased longevity and resilience, whilst also successfully alleviating the potentially negative effects an urban environment can have on a living organism. From a design perspective, tree pits and tree grilles can also remove the

requirement for slither cuts of stone, which often leads to recurrent and costly breakages.

In practice The entrances to Heathrow Terminal 5 Departures and Arrivals Halls are framed by a series of trees installed in a linear formation across the hard landscaped exterior. The brief required a series of tree pits and tree grilles that featured uplighters, whilst also offering easy maintenance, without the need to close the area to passengers to minimise any potential disruption. To fulfil these requirements, up to 30 of Howe Green’s 7500 Series Tree Pits and Tree Grilles in stainless steel were specified to provide the highest standards in functionality and aesthetics.

EVEREDGE PLANTERS In 2018 EverEdge were tasked to supply plastic powder coated steel planters for the redevelopment of two Grade II listed Regency Villas. The Villas are being developed for Pegasus Life to provide 50 apartments. Glen Howells Architects have designed the project to fit in seamlessly into the distinguished streets of Montpellier, Cheltenham. Sky Garden, the contractor on this project, came to EverEdge to provide the steel planters. The planters are 900mm tall and have been designed to fit between existing structures on the roof of the building. The planters are filled with a mixture of void former, grit, bark and 300mm of topsoil. Because of the size of the planters, they are braced for strength and to prevent the steel from bowing.

The planters are made from durable steel for longevity and finished in a light grey powder coat which matches beautifully the building. All the planters have an internal jointing system which was a requirement on this project to give them a near seamless appearance. Another low growing mix Euroflor’s Boulevard, combines native and naturalised, predominantly perennial species with minimal maintenance, in that it can reduce mowing to just one cut per year.

Mowing grass verge strips and splays is an essential operation for traffic safety, ensuring site lines are unimpeded and excessive growth does not obstruct the carriageway. Long-established verges seeded with tall agricultural grasses and colonised by weeds over the decades, present significant challenges.

REDEXIM MULTI-SEEDER

DELIVERS SEED AND SIGNIFICANT TIME-SAVINGS FOR EYEMOUTH GC Head Greenkeeper at Eyemouth Golf Club Keith Burgon has praised the Redexim Multi-Seeder for transforming overseeding operations at the Scottish club. Where previously, overseeding the 18 greens would have taken the team of three more than a day to complete, with the Multi-Seeder the task takes just a matter of hours – not just resulting in major labour savings but improvements in germination too! Eyemouth GC is a clifftop/links course perched on the top of Gunsgreen Hill in the Scottish Borders. Their exposed coastal location means that when it comes to seed, it’s salt-tolerant Fescues required for the greens - however without a seeder at their disposal, overseeding was limited by resources to an annual operation. “We would aerate, then broadcast the seed with a spreader, then have to manually brush the seed in and topdress which was all hugely time

84

www.landud.co.uk

consuming” explains Keith, who has been at the club for seven years. “I have used the Multi-Seeder before and have seen first-hand the fantastic results it achieves at other clubs. After speaking to Ian Lauder from Redexim, we had one in on demo from our local dealer Hendersons, so that we could check it would suit our course conditions. We had the opportunity to try it on a couple of our greens and tees, and the whole team were immediately impressed by the minimal disruption it left and the great germination that followed.” Since taking delivery of the 1.2m wide Multi-Seeder 1200 in September 2021, it has already helped to deliver important fescues into some of the courses most exposed greens. “The twin sarel roller set-up is creating double the holes, so double the opportunity for getting seed into the ground. This undoubtedly helped us to see good

germination, despite us not getting out with it until late November. The fact it is equipped with two brushes also means that an additional member of staff isn’t required to follow the Multi-Seeder round. What was previously a three-man job, is now complete in one pass.” Keith adds, “With the growth in golf, it’s more important than ever to be able to get jobs such as overseeding done as quickly and effectively as possible. Now that we have the Multi-Seeder, not only can we overseed more frequently throughout the year to boost course condition, the clean finish means we can complete the operation prior to play commencing, and the golfers will barely notice anything has been done!”

PROVEN BROWN PATCH TOLERANCE OF DLF’S 4TURF® FORMS BASIS OF BRAND NEW MIXTURE FOR 2022

In response to the increase in reported instances of Brown Patch in the UK football industry, DLF have undertaken a screening programme for the last two years to analyse the tolerance of different varieties. The results of the trial highlighted the strong tolerance of certain DLF diploid varieties together with 4turf®, which now forms the basis of a J Premier 4Turf – a brand-new Johnsons Sports Seed mixture launching in 2022.

86

www.landud.co.uk

Brown patch is a turfgrass foliar disease caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia spp. All cool-season turf grasses are susceptible to potential attack by the fungus, however it has been found to be most detrimental to bent grass, ryegrasses, annual meadow grass and some fescue species. Attacks are often triggered by hot, humid conditions with an increase in cases identified on plants that are moist and/or have been over-stimulated with nitrogen-based fertilisers.

Samples of a particularly violent European strain of Brown Patch were harvested from a football environment and were studied at the MariboHilleshög Research AB laboratory in Landskrona, Sweden – specialists in Rhizoctonia fungi. More than 30 perennial ryegrass varieties – including nine 4turf® tetraploid perennial ryegrasses – were inoculated, with each variety then scored weekly for plant health. DLF were able to determine with

confidence, the higher tolerance of the 4turf® varieties to Brown Patch, which correlates with the results seen in other disease trials. Using the findings from the trials, Johnsons Sports Seed have launched J Premier 4Turf. New for 2022, it is the first mixture of its kind to combine the top-performing perennial ryegrasses from the trial to deliver improved tolerance to Brown Patch, together with the outstanding wear tolerance and visual merit of the original J Premier Pitch mixture. J Premier 4Turf takes full advantage of the most tolerant diploid and tetraploid varieties, with 20% 4turf® – formulated with 10% FABIAN and 10% TETRAGAME. Following ongoing dialogue with the DLF technical team since early 2019, Head Groundsman at Reading Football Club Chris Last became the first to trial the new J Premier 4Turf mixture. In conjunction with the trial results, the objective was to deliver a mixture with even greater

Average Tolerance

resilience, even faster establishment and improved wear tolerance. “Having not used 4turf® before, it was interesting to see how well it thrived in our environment!” Chris explains. “We seeded, then sheeted and within just three days the 4turf® was up without the need for excessive levels of input. We were then cutting within a week. As the months progressed, myself and the team at DLF have been avidly observing the sward and how it copes with the issues – particularly disease pressure – at various times of the year. July has always traditionally been a hot-spot for Brown Patch, but last year we saw nothing at all. The additional resilience of the 4turf® has meant that even during high-pressure periods for Fusarium in September and October, any small signs have not turned into full outbreaks. Without question, we have retained far more overall coverage than we have in previous seasons.”

CHESHAM TOWN COUNCIL BLOWN AWAY BY SXG PERFORMANCE ISEKI UK & Ireland, distributors of ISEKI compact tractors and mowers alongside their local dealer Turney Group based in Oxfordshire, recently sold a SXG326+ to Chesham Town Council. With six members of staff, Paul Isom manages the Parks and Premises Team at Chesham Town Council, looking after all the open spaces, cemeteries plus extra contract work in the area and recently purchased a SXG326+ to keep the areas in top condition. Commenting on the buying process Paul explains; “After having demonstrations from

88

www.landud.co.uk

numerous manufacturers, Josh Walker from local ISEKI dealer Turney Group based in Oxfordshire brought along the SXG326+ mower - it easily outperformed the other machines for cutting and collecting in the wet leaving a brilliant finish every time. There was no question, this would be the second ISEKI SXG mower we would own. We kept the first one for three years with no problem at all and we have had this new SXG326+ mower for over 9 months with no issues.” Used in various areas of the awardwinning Lowndes Park in Chesham,

the SXG326+ on the lowest cutting height keeps formal areas looking pristine all year round, other large areas are cut by a tractor and wide roller mower, then the wildflower meadows are topped and collected by the SXG326+ at the end of each season. Paul continued; “These SXG326+ mowers did more than we expected, we bought it for our manicured grass but it easily cuts our wildflower meadows leaving a tidy collected finish, plus the 2.2m high tip 600 litre collector means that if needed we can tip into the back of trailers Follow us @ludmagazine

to move the grass away or tip into hedgerows if we are cutting the wildflower areas. “The reliability of ISEKI is brilliant, they are solid built machines, it says what it does on the tin, it never breaks down and we’ve not had any issues. The safety features are great, one example is the machine cutting off when you get off the seat. Another feature other mowers don’t have is the ability to mow in reverse,

so useful when cutting around trees and benches where you are constantly having to adjust and change directions to make sure none of it is missed, it makes this aspect of mowing so much easier. “Travelling from site to site is made simple too with its compact size and easy tie down points which is so helpful as we cover numerous sites throughout Chesham each day, from roadside verges to parks and

playgrounds, to business premises with outdoor spaces. We take great pride in leaving manicured and striped turf, whether it’s on the verges as you drive into the town or the precious cemeteries and parks. I just think it looks great. “Based on the four years I have owned ISEKI SXG326+ mowers I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend, in fact I have done so with other local authorities, and they have also gone ahead and purchased an ISEKI. It’s an absolutely fantastic little machine!”

THE ISEKI SF OUTFRONT MOWER RANGE

allows you tackle the thickest of grass whilst collecting and leaving a pristine finish everytime. The ability to cut and collect without blocking, thanks to its turbine driven straight through chute, enables the SF551 to take on whatever the weather throws at it. Should you also wish to scarify those areas of turf and collect all in one pass the blades can easily be swapped in Muthing Flail deck to scarify blades in order to renovate the turf in the autumn.

Renowned for the ultimate cut and collect abilities the ISEKI SF outfront mower range offers a variety of finishes, whether cut and drop, cut and collect, or cut, mulch and drop. All with a choice of rotary or flail decks at varying widths to suit the application, alternatively scarifying blades can be added to certain units to complete other turf maintenance tasks using the same machine. Designed with large capacity Stage V compliant highly efficient engines that run at low revs, producing high torque ensuring the machines are as economical as possible. At the same time this means the working noise from the machine is kept

90

www.landud.co.uk

low as the engine is not working so hard to power the machine. Vital for customers when purchasing machinery in noise conscious areas, allowing them to operate closer to buildings whilst not disturbing the residents compared to other products. For keeping large areas of grass looking pristine ISEKI have the top of the range SF551, a powerful, large capacity centre collect mower which is now also available with a Muthing Flail deck, making it the ultimate combination of quality and reliability. Its large outfront deck and 1300litre high tip collector

Perfectly designed for the commercial user looking for a lightweight mower to tow from site to site, economical to run and low initial cost there is the SF224. It’s compact size with deck built underneath the front of the mower allows for effortless manoeuvrability when mowing large parks or gardens that contain lots of obstacles to negotiate. All powered by an economical 22.5 hp diesel engine that is Stage V compliant and does not need complicated emission control devices. This allows the mower to be extremely fuel efficient and only requires simple maintenance. Available with a range of rotary or flail decks, tool carrier or collector. For increased power there is SF237 35hp mower.

DEMAND QUALITY, WHY COMPROMISE?

“The SXG326+ did more than we hoped for, it cuts and collects our parks at a low height of cut, then tackles the road verges and clears the wildflower meadows leaving the same finish. They really do cut and collect even in the wet with no blockages. It is very reliable and we have had no issues with it, I would recommend ISEKI to anyone and have done to local councils already.“ Paul Isom, Parks & Premises Manager, Chesham Town Council Contact your Local Dealer to book a demonstration on your site today! www.iseki.co.uk

to the extensive Campey Turf Care Systems range. The 100% electric machine can work all year round on regular maintenance and uses a universal hooking system that enables operators to easily carry out different activities in one day. The power produced from the battery means the AllTrec can also be operated using the mower or hedge cutter attachments. The hedge cutting attachment has a 75cm working width with electric motors directly powering the blades which have speeds from 20003000rpm. The deck is controlled using a joystick and is easy to manoeuvre for a comfortable and

effective days work. The mowing deck comes in optional cutting widths of 130cm or 180cm with a variable height of cut from 30110mm, making it perfect for use on regularly maintained grass or overgrown vegetation. When cutting with the four-blade 180cm deck, the battery will typically last for 6-8 hours and 7-9 hours using the threeblade 130cm deck. A large-action radius and highly efficient attachments combined with low operation and maintenance costs make the AllTrec perfect for use in urban environments, sports complexes, holiday resorts and parks by contractors, local authorities and landscapers. Follow us @ludmagazine

GROUNDSKEEPING Weed control is an essential task in almost every groundsman, greenkeeper, contractor and landscapers schedule, and the AllTrec with Air E-Variator or Weed Brush has made it quicker, easier and emissions-free. The E-Variator is one of four attachments currently available for the AllTrec Carrier and it has been specifically designed for weed management on large paved and semi-paved surfaces. It works both preventively and repressively, saving up to 70% of its own energy through re-use – better known as the patented advanced air recycling system. The unique variable airflow function (ADS) enables the machine to work in corners and around obstacles in just one pass, with operators able to fully control the attachment using the digital control screen. LPG tanks used for the E-Variator Weed Burner can be mounted to the back of the AllTrec, with a connection available

for the automatic tank heater to prevent them from freezing. The closed burner system with heat recovery has gas reduction of no less than 60% and an automatic temperature regulation of 380ºC. Weeds can also be removed using the 70cm Weed Brush, which is electrically powered with three brush speeds and controlled using the onboard joystick. It can be hydraulically adjusted to any angle and used for a full day without any worry of batteries running out. All batteries come with a three-year warranty and have a lifetime of + - 2500 charge discharge cycles. The 48VDC battery uses LifePO4 technology with a capacity of 20kwh or an optional 30kwh, with onboard charging taking 4-8 hours. Weeds can also be removed using the patented 3D weed brush, which is electrically powered with three brush speeds and controlled using the onboard joystick. It can be hydraulically adjusted to any angle

and used for a full day without worrying about batteries running out. The power produced from the battery means the AllTrec can also be operated using the mower or hedge cutter attachments. The hedge cutting attachment has a 75cm working width with electric motors directly powering the blades, which have speeds from 20003000rpm. The mowing deck comes in optional cutting widths of 130cm or 180cm with a variable height of cut from 30-110mm, making it perfect for use on regularly maintained grass or overgrown vegetation. In autumn, the powerful leaf blower with adjustable nozzle comes into its own and will soon be joined by the currently in development winter duty package, including a snow plough, salt spreader and winter brush, which will increase the machine’s year-round versatility.

NO WEED OUT OF REACH WITH THE CAMPEY AIR TROLLY PACK To compliment the Alltrec’s versatility for landscaping and urban maintenance, Campey Turf Care Systems introduced the latest innovation, the AIR Trolly Pack from Dutch manufacturer WeedControl BV, which brings even the hardest to access weeds into reach. The Honda GX120 motor with compressor powers the LPG/ propane 3x15kw hot-air burner head with an adjustable operating temperature between 190°C – 290°C. The small footprint of the trolley and burner means it can easily access hard to reach areas such as around poles, along walls and road edges, under street furniture and in narrow street passages and alleys where weeds consistently grow. Follow us @ludmagazine

The AIR Trolly Pack is also ideal for inner-city areas and the aftertreatment of larger weed removal projects. Flame weeding is a very effective and environmentally friendly way to remove weeds against alternative methods such as potentially harmful herbicides. Most annual and some perennial weeds can be eradicated using a flame that essentially explodes the weeds’ cells, turning them into ash. This ash then mixes with the soil or disperses with no harm to other plants while there is no risk of drift onto other areas, which can be common with chemical applications.

www.landud.co.uk

93

GROUNDSKEEPING

WeedControl has explored all health and safety concerns associated with working with a flame during the development of the product. Special attention was paid to the ease of operation to ensure that any user can safely and easily operate the machine. All WeedControl products are made to meet legal requirements when working in public and private areas and impact the environment as little as possible with a focus on sustainability. The AIR Trolly Pack can be optionally supplied with a hotair bin at the front side. This is equipped with a 3x15kW hot-air burner head. For this, the AIR Trolly Pack is modified at the front side for stability.

HEADLAND’S EPH TANKMIX HELPS ESSENDON COUNTRY CLUB

EMERGE FROM WINTER DISEASE-FREE

a combination of Liquid Turf Hardener, Turfite® Elite and Seamac® ProTurf Fe, proven to deliver turf strength and reduce disease activity when applied as part of a preventative planthealth approach. “I’ve used 20-20-30+Mantle previously, but where we would traditionally begin applications at the end of September, we brought this forward to the end of August because of the concerns we had about disease, Fusarium in particular. The 20-20-30+Mantle was complemented with applications of DewCure™ to reduce leaf moisture and this combination, without a doubt, had a massive impact on protecting plant health and saw us get through the whole winter with no disease.”

A nutritional programme from Headland Amenity has been praised by the Director of Courses at Essendon Country Club, for helping them get through the autumn and winter of 2021 disease-free. After his appointment in June, Marc Winnan had soil samples taken which highlighted extremely high levels of organic matter – the reduction of which was the key to the plan constructed in conjunction with Headland’s Regional Technical Manager Peter Blackaby. Marc oversees all elements of greens maintenance across the Hertfordshire estate, which includes two 18-hole golf courses as well as a driving range, practice facilities

96

www.landud.co.uk

and the 9-hole Muntjac Academy Course. “Whenever you start a new role, you’ll instantly spot certain problems but it’s also important to identify anything going on deeper in the profile which is why we had both Headland and the STRI take soil samples” explains Marc, who heads up a team of 15. “The high OM levels were a real concern, so we quickly instigated a mechanical and nutritional programme to bring that down, to reduce our susceptibility to disease before the high-pressure period arrived.” Key to the programme was Headland’s industry-leading 20-20-30+Mantle Enhanced Plant Health (EPH) tank-mix –

“In other areas of the course, the goal was to improve the density of the sward via granular feeds. We applied Quickstart® Maxi Plus which gave us great results across the tees, approaches and fairways, and then switched this to Multigreen 15-022 temperature-controlled release fertiliser to see us through the winter months.” Together with the improvements in course condition, Marc has been equally pleased with the support received from the Headland Technical Team every step of the way. He adds, “Because of his greenkeeping background, Peter speaks our language and worked together with us to give us more than just the products we need, ensuring we always had all of the additional data and knowledge to make an informed decision.”
