KEEPING YOUR GREENHOUSE HEATING COSTS DOWN THIS WINTER

Glasshouse & Greenhouse Manufacturer Hartley Botanic Advises On Ways To Economise On Greenhouse Heating This Winter

During a cold winter, it is not possible to make a Greenhouse completely safe from freezing without internal heating. If outside temperatures fall substantially below 0 degrees centigrade – tender plants will be at risk. Each degree of temperature near freezing is critical for plants, but good management will help, and allow you to navigate

Greenhouse heating alongside this winter’s energy costs.

Hartley Botanic’s handmade, aluminium Glasshouses and Greenhouses are enjoyed worldwide and, with over 84 years of engineering expertise and experience built-in, their structures can withstand the most challenging of weather conditions. Here the historic Lancashire-based manufacturer, shares how Greenhouse owners can keep a handle on their heating costs this year.

1/ START WITH HARTLEY BOTANIC’S GEOTHERMAL HEATING CALCULATOR

Greenhouse Heating Calculator | Hartley Botanic (hartley-botanic.co.uk)

Hartley Botanic’s useful Greenhouse heating calculator allows you to individually estimate what your Greenhouse heating costs will be over the winter, and in so doing, will help you make an informed decision about the best heater to use.

4 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine GARDEN DESIGN

The calculator will allow you to work out how much it will cost to heat your Greenhouse to maintain a desired minimum internal temperature and provide a heating estimate based on the size of your structure. The calculator offers approximate heating cost guidelines incorporating how insulated your Greenhouse is. To use the calculator, please visit: Greenhouse Heating Calculator | Hartley Botanic (hartleybotanic.co.uk)

2/ IDEAS TO REDUCE THE HEATING YOU NEED…

TAKE THERMOMETER READINGS

In a Hartley Botanic Wisley 8, six pane Greenhouse, a 2.5 kilowatt electric fan heater can be set to minimum, so that heat comes on only when the temperature falls

dangerously low. You will need to take a few days to work out the ideal setting on the dial of the heater and to match this with overnight minimum temperatures. To do this you will need a reliable ‘max and min’ thermometer placed among plants on the staging or fixed about a metre above the ground, well away from the heater.

MAINTAIN A COMFORTABLE MINIMUM

A night minimum of 4º or 5ºC is a safe temperature to maintain if you want to be safely buffered against severe snap frosts. Spread horticultural fleece over vulnerable plants during excessively cold spells.

SOIL-WARMING CABLES

One of the most economical heating techniques is simply to warm soil,

GARDEN DESIGN

either in a bed, or propagation bench. Soil-warming cables provide heat where it is most needed, at the roots, so even if top-growth is cold-damaged, the roots will survive. Cable is safe and easy to install and, with a thermostat, lets you control soil temperature more accurately. It is particularly useful for protecting young plants in cold times of the year.

Its performance depends on the cable type, prevailing temperatures and how the system is installed, e.g. a 6m cable consumes 75 watts, and correctly installed will sustain temperatures between 15°C and 25°C per square metre of covered bench. Cover plants with fleece or a canopy of translucent sheeting to retain heat.

3/ SIMPLE TIPS & TRICKS

• A number of smaller heaters can work better, and cost less to run, than one large one, in the same way that small fans improve the airflow by eliminating ‘dead’ corners, this allows for a reduction in total heating costs.

• A dehumidifier can reduce damp in your Greenhouse, meaning you don’t have to reduce internal temperatures through opening up your ventilation.

• When the sun is shining, keep internal blinds up to heat your Greenhouse, but put them down to keep the heat in once it turns shady.

Keeping potted plants drier will protect roots, enhancing winter hardiness.

Select plants for over wintering carefully, growing only (or grouping) those of similar temperature requirements.

• Invest in a propagator with electric bottom heat if you don’t have one already (those with thermostatic settings will give

better temperature control.)

Even if you provide no other heat source, this will help keep vulnerable plants frost-free.

4/ ‘RUSSIAN DOLL’ GREENHOUSES

Use smaller or mini Greenhouses, such as Hartley Botanic’s Patio Glasshouse within your main structure to act as a double layer of insulation or to provide a microclimate for plants which need extra warmth. Then, instead of having to heat your whole Greenhouse, you can restrict it to mini Greenhouse pockets.

5/ INSULATION

You can reduce heat-loss by installing winter insulation over glazed areas. The most effective method is to use bubble wrap polythene, cut to size and fixed on the inside of the Greenhouse, close to the glass. This is a fiddly task, since the material has to be cut to fit, and it may take more than one person to install the insulation. Furthermore, the insulation is best occasionally removed during the warmer months to admit more light and to facilitate cleaning.

Partial insulation is also possible. If you wish to protect plants in part of the house, but don’t want the arduous task of cladding the whole interior with bubble-wrap, section off part of the structure. You can separate it from the remainder with a polythene sheet, or a bubblewrap curtain, and put vulnerable treasures inside the enclosure.

6/ GREENHOUSE HEATER TYPES

Size: Determining the size of your heater depends on two things: how big your Greenhouse is and how much heat you need to generate. Of course, a more compact Greenhouse can make do with a smaller heater.

A larger Greenhouse, on the other hand, will need a more powerful heater.

Type: Electric heaters are the safest and most common method of artificial heating for your

Greenhouse. You’ll be able to control the temperature and fans help to equally distribute the warmth. Some electric fan heaters can also be used in the summer, switching the cold setting to circulate cooler air.

Other Greenhouse heaters include propane, natural gas, and paraffin heaters. However, these are best suited to smaller Greenhouses. All need to be regularly monitored and refilled.

During the winter months, Hartley Botanic is offering £50 off all new Greenhouse and Glasshouse orders, simply quote ‘50Winter’ to access the discount by the end of March 2023.

LAKES IN DISTRESS

Lakes both large and small up and down the country are suffering. Look no further than the recent national news on the state of Lake Windermere. Even local news outlets regularly bemoan the state of smaller lakes in and around our towns and villages.

actively harmful. This information often tries to look at the symptoms rather than how to treat the cause. Additionally, treating algae incorrectly can make the situation worse as it can increase silts which cause further oxygen depletion. This can also increase noxious gases such as hydrogen sulphide or methane. It is therefore important to seek advice that looks at the bigger picture. The lake must be considered as a living, breathing eco-system.

OASE has been working with water for over 70 years. Our work with lake therapy focuses on the holistic approach to manging water. This is summarised with our 3-step process – Water Stabilisation, Treatment when necessary and the Controlling of Nutrients. The core of this is a constant maintenance of the lake, rather than relying on emergency treatment.

Years of neglect and poor information has led to increasingly worsening conditions. We regularly see cases of: Oxygen depletion, fish deaths, animals harmed by blue green algae blooms, algae covered lakes and unpleasant odours.

We also see that information for how to tackle these problems is incomplete at best and often

What if we told you that all the above-mentioned problems are linked and are symptoms of deeper issues that must be addressed? Understanding these root causes is essential for success.

If you have a lake in distress, contact OASE today. Scan the QR code on the opposite page or go to social.oase.com/lakedistress to register for our free webinar programme that will take you through the 3-step process. Or drop us a line at enquiries@oase.com.

The secret to lake management

Are you having trouble with high levels of silt or algae in a lake or large body of water? Do the descriptions on the oth er page ring true? Never fear, OASE are on hand to help support you. Scan the QR code below to sign up to OASE’s free webinar course on Lake Therapy. Keep reading to discov er the three simple steps to keep your lake looking stunning.

Step 1

The first step is to get the natural cleaning mecha nisms in the lake working. This means oxygenating silt layers and getting the pH/KH buffers to the right levels. With poor conditions these natu ral cleansers are not able to flourish. If left for too long the lake is only go ing to get worse. OASE’s range of treatments to stabilise include OptiLake, SchlixX and SchlixX Plus.

Step 2

Prevention is always bet ter than cure, but when algae is present it needs treating. OASE’s range of algae treatments use oxygen and specially de veloped bacteria. These are designed to not harm the ecosystem and don’t introduce harsh chemicals into the environment . OA SE’s range of algae treat ments include ClearLake AlgoLon and Peridox

Step 3

Controlling nutrients means reducing algae’s life source. Build ups of nutrients can lead to silt and a lack of oxygen. If left untreated blue-green algae will bloom and an imals will die. Slow down and bind nutrients to al low the lake to help itself in the long term. OASE’s range of nutrient binders include SchlixX, SchlixX Plus, SeDox and SeDox Speed.

The secret to successful lake management is the combination of all the steps. Speak to OASE to day to learn more about the 3 step process.

Outdoor furniture is no longer dominated by rattan but instead a plethora of high-end

options, using long lasting and weather resistant materials, turning your outdoor space into somewhere we want to enjoy all year – rather than just in the summer.

One of the UK’s leading luxury outdoor furniture brands, Maze, is one such company pioneering the

use of weather resistant, outdoor fabrics on garden furniture. Maze sees this as the evolution of luxury outdoor living, bringing the comfort of indoor furniture to the convenience of being able to sit outdoors 365 days a year thanks to its innovative design and manufacturing.

With many of Maze’s outdoor furniture also offering a multiple dining and seating solutions, consumers have the added versatility from the furniture to create the desired set-up depending on what they need it for.

Having an Instagram-friendly fire pit

A recent garden survey listed having a fire pit as the third most popular garden trend. Fire pits are the hallmark of garden entertaining, doubling as a functional centrepiece to entertain around, and this shows no sign of slowing down.

So, whether it’s an integrated fire pit for an all-in-one dining, entertaining and functional heating solution – that also ticks the Instagramworthy box – or a statement piece of landscape art, fire pits should be a welcome addition to any garden.

Neutral and beige tones

Who said beige was boring? As the natural world takes a firmer hold on our interiors design choices, it’s looking to spill out into the garden too.

These shades are calming, natural and also blend very well into the natural environment. Neutral colours, such as white, can be offset beautifully against lush greenery.

BIRKDALE ADDS ALUMINIUM GATE KIT TO ITS DURAPOST® RANGE

The UK’s leading manufacturer of fencing and gate accessories, Birkdale has launched a new aluminium gate kit as part of its DuraPost® range. Fully adjustable, installers can change the height, width and infill panel at the fitting stage, eliminating the need to have a bespoke gate made.

The kit includes a powder-coated aluminium frame, all the hinges and fixings needed, as well as a gate slam and a secure lock that can be adjusted to match the homeowner’s house key. The frame is available in three colour choices – Anthracite Grey, Olive Grey or Sepia Brown

– and is compatible with any composite or timber panel infill of your choosing.

Installation is easy. After measuring the aperture, subtract the width of frame uprights from the measurement and cut the cross rails, infill panels and top cover strip to size. Next cut the frame uprights to height from the top to ensure that the lock position (pre-machined) stays at the optimum height. Fit the corner joints into the cross rails and attach these to the hinge-side upright. Then simply insert selected infills into the centre. Assemble and attach the lock upright before

adding end caps, cover strips and the lock mechanism, before finally hanging the gate.

The frame is manufactured from powder-coated aluminium and the lock and hinges from stainless steel, meaning the gate is highly weather resistant. It is a long-term solution that will require minimal maintenance. Directional hinges also ensure that the gate is incredibly secure, along with the keyable lock cylinder. Given its high performance credentials – the gate system comes with a 15-year guarantee as standard.

22 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine GARDEN DESIGN

“We are really proud of this new addition to our DuraPost® range. The flexibility of the gate ensures that it can meet any height, width or design requirement and it fits in perfectly with the look and feel of almost any fencing system,” commented John Abernethie, Managing Director of Birkdale.

“It has always been our mission to make life easier for fencing contractors and create products that, while fulfilling customer needs, also work for the installer – and this gate kit does just that. Finally, it is a sustainable choice as at the end of its working life the frame is 100% recyclable.”

WHY YOU SHOULD INSTALL DECKING IN THE WINTER

There are a few good reasons why you shouldn’t wait until spring comes around to consider new decking, as winter can prove the most efficient time to install decking in your garden.

For instance, if you’re conscious about disrupting life in your garden, an installation in the colder months gives plenty of time for wildlife and plants to recover. By the time spring comes around again, your garden will be in great shape for enjoying the best of the season.

It’s also a good time for the decking too, giving it a longer period to settle before the temperature changes again, so long as you include the right gaps when installing your decking. If you are installing your own decking, leave gaps of around 8mm to allow for your deck to expand once it heats up again. This also allows water to drain away easily, and prevents pooling water.

If you are using wood, winter also offers the ideal time to allow your deck to cure at a steady speed,

without the adverse impact of the sunshine on this process.

Installation in the winter also means it won’t get in the way of any summer plans, and you can beat the busy period when it comes to having a choice of installers to fit your new deck.

Just because the days are cooler, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your new space. Decked areas can be home to warming fire pits and atmospheric lighting, and outdoor rugs and cushions offer the chance to make a decked seating space cosy through the colder months.

When it comes to rugs, it’s important to choose these carefully, as some materials can cause additional damage. Avoid any metal components, which can scratch and rust, leading to staining. Rugs with latex or rubber backing are also best avoided, as they can leave marks on decking boards. The best choices are fast-woven and vinyl-backed rugs, which are resistant to moulds and mildew.

A deck can also nicely complement an outhouse, pergola or other shelters, to let you enjoy being outdoors whilst fending off the worst of the winter weather.

When choosing your deck, there are plenty of considerations on price, garden shape and size, and durability. Composite decking can be a good option during cold and rainy seasons, as, unlike timber decking, composite is more resistant to a whole range of winter climates. For instance, its grooved boards can offer a great non-slip surface, whilst it’s also resistant to moisture build-up that would otherwise cause mould and mildew on traditional timber decking.

That also makes it a great surface to withstand the snow and ice, so long as you follow simple care instructions. Avoid metal shovels, and instead, use plastic with care, or choose a soft bristle brush to sweep leaves or snow from your decking.

RECOGNISING EXCELLENCE THROUGH ACCREDITATION

Have you ever wondered if there are quality standards around timber decking and cladding products or services? Do you need technical advice or simply design inspiration? Look no further than the Timber Decking and Cladding Association (TDCA). We’re here to raise the bar on all things decking and cladding. Whether you’re a landscaper, architect, specifier, contractor or DIY enthusiast, we can help. We have industry experience, a library of free resources and a growing member supplier list with independent third-party verification.

To get a job done right first time, using the best calibre of products with correct standards of installation is essential. But whatever the market, it’s often difficult for a buyer to distinguish good from bad quality, whether it be a specialised deck fixing or a reputable cladding installer –especially when searching online. Price point isn’t always an indicator of reliability.

Step in DeckMark and CladMark. TDCA accreditation schemes which recognise manufacturers, suppliers and installers who work to the highest standards in their fields.

The schemes are intended to help those engaged in the specification, design, installation or purchasing of decking and cladding by providing assurance that the products they choose, or the contractor they commission, will be of a high standard and fit for purpose. Registered businesses are audited every 12 months by an independent inspector appointed by the TDCA.

From wood coating manufacturers to deck design engineers, simply search our database to pinpoint specific suppliers.

Or get in touch - TDCA offers a sourcing service, just give us your project details and we’ll find the right supplier for you. Visit www.tdca.org.uk to learn more or call 01977 558147.

INNOVATION & SUSTAINABILITY FROM LUMENA

240v LED BOLLARDS & THE RADIATA PINE RANGE WELCOMES A SOLAR ADDITION

Landscape lighting specialists, Lumena Lights Ltd, began supplying professional 240V bollard lights in aluminium, around 10 years ago. The choices of head, height and mounting options have proved very successful in terms of longevity and reliability, and lights continue to be supplied for various professional applications.

Lumena’s decade-long experience with 240v bollard lighting has laid the foundations to further innovate in this space, and October 2022 sees the release of the highly efficient Boleda Range. The range utilises built-in LEDs as an alternative to replaceable lamps. These integrated LED chips are designed specifically for the range, maintaining the same light output as replaceable lamps whilst consuming less power.

There is a variety of heights, surface or root mount options, each available with or without a dusk to dawn photocell. There are 2 contemporary designs, the ‘Ventus’ and ‘Conus’. A fantastic feature on both designs is a 3-way LED colour temperature switch allowing illumination to be warm, cool, or daylight white (3000K, 4200K & 6000K). It is for this reason that the Boleda Range actually offers 36 variations!

Timber meets Technology In 2017, Lumena’s passion for incorporating long-lasting materials into their ranges and a more natural approach, saw the launch of the ‘Radiata’ timber path lights.

The ‘Radiata’ Range is so called, because of the solid Radiata Pine which is sustainably sourced. The wood goes through outstanding treatment and is fully sanded to give a smooth top quality finish.

34 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine LIGHTING
Sol-Icon path lights - Eden Project Radiata Pine Sleeper Lights

During pressure treatment, the entire timber is penetrated by the latest generation wood preservative. Tanalith E preservative treatment is used in accordance with BS8417 to meet Use Class 4. Radiata pine

is well-known for its low splitting properties with no feathering.

Sourced and CNC machined by a top FSC certified timber supplier, it is suitable for most climates, whether the environment is hot or wet.

Solid brass landscape lights are incorporated into machined sleepers or posts to create robust, decorative path lights. Most designs are 240v mains-powered, although there are 12v options and all are LED compatible. Ideal for both domestic and commercial use, they’ve been supplied to high end developments nationwide, where durability and a rustic feel has been specified.

Expanding once again, in 2019 Lumena launched the UK’s largest range of professional solar bollards. Designed to work in UK weather, this innovative range uses highly efficient panels and lithium batteries to retain maximum charge. They also have a gradual dimming sequence throughout the night for 365-day illumination with a 5 year guarantee. The solar bollards are also robust aluminium, and have been supplied to housing developments, commercial walkways, glamping sites and notably, the Eden Project in Cornwall.

Supplying the wooden and solar ranges, led naturally to where ‘Timber meets Technology’.

Solar lights can be installed anywhere, so it made sense to experiment with the versatility of a high-performance solar wall light to see if the solar and Radiata ranges could be combined in one design. The ‘Secursol’ remote control PIR light is impressively bright with substantial detection range, designed to mount onto a flat surface, it lasts for hours, has an integrated, adjustable panel and different modes including a lowlevel security downlight.

Thus the ‘SecurBol’ was created, by combining an existing solar PIR light with fully sanded radiata pine. The timber mounts 400mm into soft ground with no restrictions on positioning, perfect for long drives and paths where mains power is not feasible. The angle of the polycrystalline solar panel can adjust by up to 70˚ to catch a better angle of UV rays without altering the direction in which the solar path light shines.

Boleda Conus 240v LED Bollard Eccentrica Solar Bollards

In a progressive move, last month, the ultimate timber solar bollard was launched. Using the same high quality heavy-duty pine used for the Radiata range and the same technology and functions as the solar bollards, the brand new ‘EDISOL’ was created. This amazing more substantial bollard incorporates a modern solar path light head into a 200mm diameter heavy-duty timber post.

The ultimate in environmentally conscious lighting, no wiring is required, simply sink the wooden post in ground, turn on, and wait for night! With a replaceable inbuilt LED filament lamp in daylight or warm white and 360 deg. low level light diffusion, they are perfectly suited to rural areas such as parks, walkways, car parks and larger driveways.

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

The iconic multi-level landscape is subtly inspired by “the phenomenon of river” reflecting the site context. It is the journey of water that “flows” from the upper terrace to the Ground. The story begins once the resident approach to the garden.

There are three major elements: iconic lawn, water feature, and garden path. The water feature cascades down from the upper level as a welcome element creating a sense of discovery and auditory.

The water cascade is well designed in relation to the slope of the walkway planned for handicapped, elderly, and pedestrians to walk to the top. Either going up or walking down, a water feature is the key element along the walkway. Inspired by the phenomenon of the river, the water movements therefore conceptually generate the design framework, from the gravitational force of the tidal wave, the water ripple, to the mesmerizing water flow.

Captivated by the unique composition of landscape design elements, the experiences of the main garden are enclosed yet contrast with its surroundings inviting the residents to the journey in the garden. The landscape design features the multi-leveled landscape composing a series of water features, landforms, pathways with universal design, and feature pavilions.

Human senses are motivated by the design elements such as water features (sense of auditory), grass meadows (sense of touch), and a variety of plants (sense of sight).

www.landud.co.uk 39Follow us @ludmagazine

On the top of the podium, there are two playhouses with the lush landscape as the landmark in the garden. The residents can enjoy and overlook the garden in the different scenes. Not only the sloping path but there is a garden walk with steps as well. This shortcut is embraced by the grass meadow creating a “soft touch” to the garden.

The co-working pods are a feature along the garden. It is on a different level and can overlook a pleasant view. Sky Pool, as a vanishing edge pool, is designed as two pools within one pool concept creating a lap pool and leisure pool. These two pools overlook the breathtaking river view and city skyline.

PERMEABLE PAVING ACCESS ROUTE INSTALLED FOR BOSTON BARRIER FLOOD DEFENCES

Completed in 2021, The Boston flood defence scheme is a £124 million project which provides improved flood protection to over 14,300 homes and businesses, including around 226 at risk listed buildings. Designed to safeguard the town against tidal surges such as the 2013 event which flooded over 820 homes and businesses, the scheme protects against forecast sea level rises for the next 100 years and provides 1 in 300 year storm event protection.

A road for utilities vehicles was required to enable maintenance teams to access the barrier from the top of the embankment and adjacent to the flood defence wall. The Environment Agency also required a natural grass/wildflower surface since the road forms part of the Macmillan Way walking route, a 290 mile footpath linking Boston to Abbotsbury in Dorset with provision for disability access.

The right bank of the project incorporates 4,300m2 of ABG’s Sudsgrid 40 cellular paving along with Abgrid, Geogrid and Terrex geotextile to complete a 600m long reinforced grass service road. Sudsgrid® is a cellular plastic porous paving solution for use in Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). GREEN-TECH CAST IRON GRILLES

ADD A LONG-LASTING FINISHING TOUCH AT UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

Scape are well known for providing exemplary student accommodation, with locations throughout the UK, Ireland and Australia. The new canal side accommodation at Mile End in London is situated on the Queen Mary University campus. Comprising 412 studio rooms and flats over two main blocks, it also offers communal and study areas, as well as a gym and spacious bike storage, an oftenoverlooked necessity in London.

HG Construction have worked on nine previous Scape buildings, with a tenth at Leeds under construction. The emphasis on aesthetics and quality runs through the outside areas too, with a cool palette of soft greys, white and dark bronze cladding offset by stylish columnar silver birch trees, providing a clean, inviting look.

Green-tech involvement: Green-tech was asked to supply 14 heavy-duty tree grilles that would not only look good but stand the

test of time. Our Coverdale cast iron grilles offer protection from both pedestrian and vehicular traffic and are made in the UK from 100% recycled material. Should the need arise, they are also 100% recyclable.

To ensure a long life, our Coverdale grilles are manufactured using Engineering grade 250 cast iron, with an expected lifespan in excess of 100 years, even with minimal maintenance or repainting. This impressive durability is down to the fact that 250 Grade cast iron does not rust in the traditional sense. Even if left unpainted, over 100 years, Green-tech cast iron grilles will only lose a few microns to oxidisation.

The standard finish is one coat metal primer followed by a Weathershield rust resistant paint system available in most RAL or BS colours. The grilles are all made to order in a variety of styles and can be supplied with irrigation or uplighter holes.

Alasdair Innes – Green-tech Specification Advisor comments, “This really is a fantastic looking project, and it was great to visit the site and see our grilles looking so good in their surroundings, with the trees establishing so well. If required, we also offer a range of steel tree guards to compliment the grilles and give protection to the trees from vehicular damage or vandalism.”

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR £19M ENTERPRISE ZONE

Traffic speed reduction, drainage and biodiversity were among key challenges met by Brett Landscaping and civil engineers BDP as part of infrastructure work on Bradford’s new £19 million Enterprise Zone.

With heavy goods traffic due to rise significantly as the Enterprise Zone was constructed, BDP were looking for a solution to reduce the width of the carriageway in order to slow the speed of HGVs on the soon-to-be busy industrial road.

As BDP investigated designs for a central reservation incorporating a Vehicle Restraint System - to contain and redirect the vehicles - Brett

was able to offer technical advice, market-leading kerbs and bespoke engineered solutions for the project.

To meet the strict design documents, BDP specified Brett’s Trief GST2A kerbs. The GST2A is also acknowledged as the only containment kerb in the UK which has been independently tested for impact protection - providing the designer with peace of mind that this system works.

Brett also provided bespoke units manufactured in their production plant to reduce manual handling and minimise the hazards of dust on site for the operatives.

As part of a commitment to sustainability and biodiversity it was also decided to provide a ‘wild meadow’ covered central reservation in this Brown Field development.

Creating the wild meadow central reservation required access points to be designed to allow maintenance vehicles onto the raised meadow. Drainage was also required through the kerb line to allow surface water to pass from the central reservation back out onto the carriageway.

Brett provided bespoke design advice on the construction of the maintenance access ramps and recommended an innovative

44 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine CONCRETE & STONEWORK

solution to the drainage issue. The design incorporated a sack of geotextile - filled with free draining aggregate - to allow the water to collect behind the kerbs and filter through the factory-controlled, predrilled core hole without flushing through the soil behind.

Any excess water which may build up on the central reservation will now flow through the kerbs back into the carriageway where it will drain away via the first downstream gully it meets. It was calculated that if one in every five Trief GST2A were core drilled - it would provide enough capacity to allow drainage of the wild meadow reservation and reduce any hydrostatic pressure build up behind the kerb run.

Jamie Gledhill, National Specification Manager at BrettLandscaping, said: “It’s always a pleasure to work with BDP and we were happy to have been able to offer such detailed design advice and bespoke units for the project.

“Brett is the market leader for containment kerbs with a reputation for providing solutions, detailing of the kerb runs and knowledge of installation. We are also the only manufacturer to offer bespoke kerb units for contractors.”

The work, at Parry Lane Enterprise Zone, Bradford, was completed in June 2022.

NEW BLACK SPOT & ALGAE REMOVER JOINS ECOPROTEC® EXTERNAL RANGE

Contract surface care specialist, ECOPROTEC has introduced new Black Spot & Algae Remover to its Exterior Range. The new acidfree, ready-to-use treatment safely removes stubborn stains and slippery residue, restoring the performance and aesthetic of natural stone, concrete, brick and porcelain. Giving results in as little as two hours, the treatment is ideal for deep cleaning new and existing paths, patios, terraces and driveways in residential and commercial settings.

Made in the UK, the new treatment targets organic residues, including black spot, white spot, lichen, moss, algae and other stains caused by damp and slippery leaf matter; treatment in the autumn, in particular, breaks down microspores and hyphae before they colonise. The treatment is applied neat to swept surfaces with a plastic watering can or light pressure garden spray; the fizzing formula then breaks down residue in 2-4

hours and its bleaching action removes stains. Surfaces are then hosed with clean water.

ECOPROTEC Black Spot & Algae Remover can be used on dry and slightly damp surfaces and should be applied during a morning or afternoon of fair weather. Following treatment, natural stone surfaces can then be protected with ECOPROTEC Patio Sealer, whilst barrier treatment - ECOPROTEC Pre Grout Protection - is recommended for matt porcelain pavers. Both treatments create a barrier without altering surface appearance; this prevents absorption of moisture and organic particles, reducing staining and the spread of algae, mould and black spot.

Developed for the contract and landscape sectors, the ECOPROTEC® range includes best-selling surface treatments for all types of tile and stone. A new updated website - at www.ecoprotec.co.uk – presents the exterior range as a separate

category from ECOPROTEC® interior treatments and includes a comprehensive library of supporting technical resources for the contractor and landscaper.

PREMIUM QUALITY SCREENED AND DRIED AGGREGATES

Resin-bound surfacing has enjoyed ever-increasing popularity over the last five years, and it’s easy to see why. The product is low maintenance, SUDs compliant and has great aesthetic appeal. Resinbound offers a surface that is both weed and slipresistant. It’s now widely used for both domestic driveways, patios, larger commercial projects, pathways and parks.

Grantex Surfacing is a brand of Long Rake Spar which has been a leader in the decorative aggregates business since 1867. Originally a mine, Long Rake Spar predominantly extracted a bright white Calcite otherwise known as Derbyshire Spar. Activity ceased in 1981 when the company started bringing in a variety of decorative aggregates. The company had already begun to diversify, expanding into mineral processing by installing washing, blending and drying equipment to target more specialist market sectors. This growing expertise allowed Long Rake Spar to become the original supplier of an expanding range of dried aggregates which eventually became known as Grantex Surfacing in 1998.

Grantex Surfacing aggregates are used for numerous applications both across the UK and overseastrusted by architects, specifiers, resin-bound installers and landscape contractors for the premium

quality screened and dried aggregates that Grantex provides. There are local stockists of Grantex aggregates situated around the UK enabling customers to collect aggregates should they wish. Nationwide delivery is also available. Grantex stockists can offer a range of blends made using Grantex aggregates and provide a full one-stop-shop of supplies for the resin-bound industry.

CASE STUDY: RED KITE VIEW, LEEDS

Artform Urban provides colourful external furniture elements to a new state-of-the-art Children and Young Peoples’ Mental Health Service (CYPMHS) inpatient unit for West Yorkshire.

Based at the St Mary’s Hospital site in Armley, Leeds, the fiveyear project led by Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust comprises a 16-bed general adolescent ward and a 6-bed psychiatric intensive care unit all supported by an expert team to offer a range of therapies and support.

The building wraps around central courtyards to provide dedicated access to garden spaces at all times. In total there are 4 separate outdoor spaces all have been furnished by Artform Urban Furniture.

The primary products specified by Ares Landscape Architects are the Loop range of street furniture; including curving Loop benches, conical picnic sets, and stools. The products are ideally suited to CAMHS units due to the minimal design and lack of any removable fixtures.

The Loop range is formed of rotationally moulded Polyurethane which creates a soft and flexible surface with no sharp edges - this was a key factor in why these products were chosen.

The products are lightweight and can be easily positioned and secured in place using hidden fixtures or alternatively filled with sand or water to be self-weighted units that can be moved as and when required.

A bespoke element was introduced with circular sheets of HPL (HighPressure Laminate) being added as table toppers to achieve a tamperproof finish. HPL is manufactured by combining sheets of recycled paper with a binding resin under high pressure - achieving a robust weather-resistant material ideal for external environments.

The playful design and inviting colours create a positive and calming atmosphere encouraging time to be spent outside in the fresh air.

Artform provided an installation service as well as advice and guidance during out-of-usual operational hours between Christmas and New Year in order to ensure there was no interruption to the patient’s routines.

The building was designed in collaboration with clinicians and young people who all contributed their ideas, hopes, and aspirations for care. They also helped to decide on the name ‘Red Kite View’ as nature is strongly associated with mental well-being and rehabilitation.

This housing regeneration project optimises modular setting out prior to installation with any necessary cutting carried out off-site under factory conditions.

MODERN METHODS OF PAVING

Modular concrete paving meets today’s Modern Methods of Construction ethos for engineered and prefabricated products, and the increasing use of efficient, fully mechanised site processes enhances the benefits.

Concrete block paving – which has been used for decades on projects ranging from the most demanding heavy-duty applications to the purely decorative – is uniquely placed to satisfy both practical and aesthetic demands. With distinct, modular units and designed variations in colour, texture and shape, block paving gives visual interest and a human scale not possible with formless materials.

Permeable Paving for Climate Change

The technology’s potential is expanded further with concrete block permeable paving (CBPP), a uniquely flexible SuDS (sustainable drainage systems) technique. It provides an inherent drainage

system that requires no additional land-take for water storage, treatment or conveyance, and offers the same visual richness as conventional block paving. It also addresses both flooding and pollution issues by storing and cleaning water runoff at source. This technology eliminates pipework, gulleys and manholes, and should therefore cost less than conventional drainage and paving.

Helping to address climate change, street tree planting and retention of existing trees in developments – with provision for long-term maintenance – are now embedded in planning policy. CBPP offers an important opportunity to help satisfy these requirements simply. Unlike conventional impermeable hard landscape materials, CBPP allows the same pattern of run-off transfer to the ground as natural vegetation, enabling water to reach tree and shrub roots, despite providing an attractive hard surface above.

In addition to irrigation directly from rain, with CBPP there is scope for water storage and rainwater capture away from trees and their umbrella canopies, for gradual conveyance laterally to trees – essential during the summer. CBPP also enables air to reach roots and poisonous CO2 to escape. The favourable environment created for tree roots avoids pavement surface disruption and facilitates natural growth into lower levels for stability and longevity.

Mechanised Installation

Whether conventional or permeable, modular concrete block paving is particularly suited to well-established mechanised

58 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine

installation techniques. In essence, a hydraulically operated clamping system is used to lift a ‘cluster’ of concrete paving blocks – generally around 1 square metre in area and already in the required laying pattern. Clamps can be fitted to a variety of site equipment or form an integral part of dedicated machines designed for good site manoeuvrability. While the machine does all the work, there is sometimes an operative guiding the cluster into place, in addition to the machine operator.

All kinds of block shapes and styles, including standard rectangular, can be machine laid in various patterns including herringbone which some manufacturers offer ready for machine laying. The speed of laying depends very much on site organisation, travel distances, machine types and other factors. But 1,500 square metres or more per day should be achievable –contrasting with no more than 50 square metres per person for manual laying. Productivity is comparable with asphalting operations and the ability to deploy a block laying machine and crew at short notice to meet ‘just in time’ demands on sizeable projects is a major advantage.

But there are benefits in using the technology on modest sized projects,

as well as larger schemes. Faster installation means earlier completion and less operational downtime of the paved area – not forgetting that block paving can be used immediately after completion without curing times. Machine installation also makes it easier to achieve consistent accuracy and uniform joint widths as it is less tiring for operatives. To maximise the efficiencies of mechanical laying, installation contractors adopt a similar approach with all the site processes, such as mechanising other operations including laying and screeding the laying course, and delivering blocks close to the laying face.

Safety and Efficiency

The same concept can be applied to other precast concrete paving products to improve safety as well as efficiency. Concrete kerbs have been in use for around 70 years and concrete flag paving for even longer. Regulations have been in place for some time to protect workers from risks associated with musculoskeletal and upper limb disorders resulting from manual lifting and installation of these products.

Elimination of manual lifting should be considered at the design stage so that kerbs and flags are always handled and laid mechanically using vacuum lifting gear, mechanical grabs or similar devices.

Where manual handling is unavoidable, workers should be trained in good handling techniques. The use of lighter weight kerbs or devices that allow two people to share the lift will reduce the risk of injury. Using smaller and lighter kerbs or flags, or substituting flags with block paving will further reduce the risks from any residual manual handling.

Another area where safety measures offer other cost and efficiency benefits is the elimination of cutting concrete paving products. Silica is a natural component found in many construction products: crystalline silica is found in sand, sandstone, granite and concrete. Health hazards can result from breathing in the fine dust of crystalline silica. But this risk can be eliminated when installing concrete paving blocks, flags and kerbs – either by removing the need to cut concrete products or by utilising safer cutting practices and equipment.

Modular Nature

It is important to remember that the key to attractive, durable, cost-effective precast concrete paving is to optimise its modular nature, by dimensioning areas to minimise cutting and combining compatible products to avoid it. There are numerous techniques and special products readily available to help with this, as well as different styles of precast concrete kerbs, channels and other components. Consideration of all the product alternatives and sizes available at the design stage, and careful setting out can generate real efficiencies and eliminate the need for cutting.

As with any construction operation, the devil is in the detail – with edges, insertions, level changes and junctions within paving, which should not just be left to on-site operatives but resolved off-site within the design.

Mechanised installation techniques using either dedicated machines or attachments to standard site equipment can dramatically improve productivity.

For all types of modular concrete paving, well-established guidelines and case studies are readily available from Interpave’s information resource: www.paving.org.uk

HOW THE BENEFITS OF PEAT-FREE GROWING CAN BOOST THE WHOLE SUPPLY CHAIN

Greenwood Plants is a landscape supply nursery which specialises in the new build property sector.

Producing around six million plants a year, it operates from seven nursery sites across the UK, and employs more than 100 people.

Achieving sustainability leadership is a major focus for Greenwood, and it is committed to becoming fully carbon neutral, growing in the greenest way possible, being an active stakeholder in local communities and environments, and exercising responsible planetary stewardship. Earlier this year it launched its new sustainability

strategy, which initiated several pioneering practices to use resources efficiently, reduce waste, and encourage biodiversity – such as switching diesel forklifts and other vehicles to electric, reducing waste, recycling water, and using biodegradable sundries. One of Greenwood’s biggest endeavours is to transition to peat-free compost.

Peat is an excellent growing medium; however, its harvesting process releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which has an adverse effect on greenhouse gas levels and contributes to climate change. One year of commercial

peat extraction removes around five hundred years’ worth of peat growth – if we continue to deplete our peatlands at this rate, we could potentially run out within the next decade and lose an important ecosystem.

With the latest announcements by DEFRA on the 2024 ban on retail sales of peat and an expedited transition to peat-free alternatives ahead of a ban for the professional sector, the debate around the use of peat continues within the horticultural industry. Greenwood was getting asked lots of questions around the topic of peat and

66 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine LANDSCAPING SERVICES

found that many of its clients and stakeholders weren’t entirely sure what the issue was. So, they made a simple educational video to explain it.

Greenwood is committed to being fully peat-free by the end of 2023, and throughout the course of this year has been carrying out extensive trials to develop a new type of growing media to support its annual production of more than six million plants. It held a peat-free Open Day in June 2022 to share its ambitions and the inside experience of its journey to peat-free with its clients, who support the endeavour and are interested in finding out more.

“We believe in growing in the most sustainable way possible and believe that stopping the use of peat within the professional horticulture industry is the right thing to do. Transitioning our entire business to becoming peat-free is a major undertaking for Greenwood, but we know its where the future lies, and we must achieve it” says Managing Director Glenn Devenish.

Ambition is turning to reality, as one in four plants at Greenwood is now potted in peat-free growing media. This approach is covering all areas of the business, as in September 2022 Greenwood launched its

centre, Greenwood Choice, also has its own dedicated peat-free area, which is set to expand next year. By growing plants in peat-free compost, the environmental benefits can be passed on to designers, landscapers, housebuilders and home owners, ensuring that the whole supply chain’s carbon footprint is improved.

Peatlands play a vital role in our fight against climate change, so the time has come to stop digging and safeguard our planet, population and wildlife. If you would like to find out more about Greenwood’s sustainability efforts, visit www.greenwoodplants.co.uk

NATIVE MIX INSTANT HEDGE

Native Mix hedging is one of the most popular in the UK, and it’s easy to see why. Hedgerows are a common sight in the British countryside and are part of our rich heritage. Native Mix hedging contains plants that are all native to the UK are and as such emulate these traditional country hedgerows.

Mixed Native hedges create a natural look and contain a variety of colours and textures which provide a rich living collage for excellent seasonal interest from the early spring blossoms to fruits and berries in the autumn. Wildlife will be attracted by the food and shelter opportunities.

Native hedging, by its very nature will thrive on most soil types and can be planted in all but the deepest of shade. It can be kept to a formal shape if clipped regularly, or pruned to give a a wilder look, which will be even more wildlife friendly.

Blackthorn

This hedging plant has early white spring flowers and autumn sloe fruits

Hawthorn

A native hedging staple with creamy-coloured flowers are followed by red berries.

Hazel

Large, downy leaves and flowers that attract many bee species. The fruits (nuts) are devoured by squirrels and mice.

Hornbeam

Hold onto some of its leaves in winter, which provide shelter and the catkins are a rich food source for insects, birds and mammals.

Privet

Bees visit the clusters of cream flowers and birds feed on the black fruits. Privet Hawk Moth, the UK’s largest resident Hawk-moth, feeds on the flower nectar.

STUNNING URBAN MEADOWS

Resilience against drought and flood is one area the company focuses on, with multiple trials underway utilising their Sustainable Urban Drainage outdoor laboratory. “Our work with SCC on the Grey-to-Green SuDS scheme gave us valuable insights into flood resilience that we have been able to design into our meadow mixes,” says Sue France, Technical Director. Based on this research, the company will soon launch a new meadow turf, Rain Garden, that thrives in moist and wet conditions and will survive for short periods completely submerged. Alongside this, a Bioswale meadow seed mix suitable for larger-scale planting will be launched.

Pictorial Meadows have been at the forefront of developing stunning designed meadows for our urban spaces for nearly 20 years. Across that time, the company has seen tremendous success in raising awareness of the benefits of designed meadows for people, nature, and our environment. Still, with innovation at its heart, it’s no surprise that the company has big plans for the future.

2022 has been a momentous year for Pictorial Meadows, with their meadows used for high-profile projects the breadth and length of the country, from the Tower of London Superbloom to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh. A new natural landscape was planted from seed surrounding the Tower, to celebrate the value of nature for wellbeing. It was created to coincide

with the Platinum Jubilee, but will remain a permanent legacy.

“I’m incredibly proud to be leading Pictorial Meadows and its parent organisation, the not-for-profit Green Estate CIC, as we look at how we can continue to support landscaping professionals, local authorities, and private landowners to create landscapes that are resilient, adaptive, and engaging,” says new CEO, Roz Davies.

Resilient, adaptive, and engaging are the three concepts that drive innovation at Pictorial Meadows. Working alongside various partners, including the University of Sheffield, the company’s 14-hectare site serves as a testbed for many future landscaping approaches. As we continue to see the impact of climate change, our landscaping solutions must change with them.

Pictorial Meadow’s parent organisation, The Green Estate CIC, specialises in parks and landscape management. “Being part of Green Estate means that Pictorial Meadows can uniquely test their meadows, using public parks to better understand people’s responses,” explains Roz. “As we increasingly look to replace our grey cityscapes with more nature-supporting solutions, it is important that schemes are having a positive social, economic and environmental impact and engage local stakeholders in the process.”

By combining the science of horticulture and environmental management with the creativity of horticultural designers, Pictorial Meadows bring a unique solution to several landscape challenges, all while creating stunning visual impact.

Pictorial Meadows offer a range of designer meadow seed mixes and turf, alongside a professional meadow creation, management, and consultation service.

SUSTAINABLE DE-GREENING BIOCIDE ENCLEAN EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

CONFIRMS PETER CORBETT OF ORIGIN AMENITY SOLUTIONS

which Enclean is derived, I saw the potential for this unique Biocide. As a company, we recognised that there was a gap in the biocide market for an efficacious, sustainable, and easy to use product.”

It’s been a year since Enclean won a top innovation award at Saltex 2021 and commercial usage backs up its performance with positive user feedback.

Enclean is a unique sustainable biocide ideal for de-greening a wide range of surfaces in the Amenity sector. It is a plant origin-based biocide from Certis Belchim which is marketed and distributed by Origin Amenity Solutions.

“The successful launch of the product in 2020 has culminated in recent approval for use by Organic Farmers and Growers (OF&G) across all organic systems” confirms Peter Corbett of Origin Amenity Solutions.

Having witnessed the development of Enclean from initial trials Peter is well placed to discuss the new biocide, now widely heralded as a ‘game-changer’ in the professional biocide market.

Peter who manages the Chemical Products portfolio for Origin Amenity Solutions first saw the biocide in its development phase in 2017 and was impressed with both its speed of action in eradicating algae and its positive effect on dealing with other green deposits that built up on hard, porous and wooden surfaces.

“From the outset when trials began on the active Nonanoic acid, from

Most de-greening biocides/surface cleaners are applied in large volumes of both active ingredient i.e. product circa 100 litres plus per Ha combined with circa 1,000 to 2,000 l/ha of water to control algae and green deposits. The active ingredients used in the formulation of most hard surface cleaners are based on chemically synthesised quaternary ammoniabased products (QAC’s). These actives, despite being used for many years, are not registered under the latest GB biocide products registrations (BPR). Many experts and environmentalists are concerned about this group due to the quantities being applied and the danger to the aquatic environment. Water Authorities and the Environment Agency are picking up these actives in surface waters so it is very possible that the use of these actives will be severely restricted in the future.

Enclean is fundamentally different in that it can be applied at low water volumes. Compared to most traditional biocide products, only a fifth to a tenth of the spray volume needs to be applied. One litre of Enclean mixed with 14 litres of water will treat 555m2. The product can be applied using any pressure knapsack

fitted with the correct nozzles. Using low spray volumes, a small knapsack sprayer fitted with a red 80-degree nozzle allows the operator much easier access to narrow pathways where algae often build up.

“Enclean is plant derived, safe to use, and it has no environmental hazard classification. It is fast acting and, once applied, it quickly degrades into natural elements without leaving harmful residue. Using a red 80-degree nozzle and maintaining the correct speed of application, 555m2 of coverage is readily achievable; this is especially important for sprayer contractors who need to limit down-time spent on refilling” he confirms.

The key customer feedback on Enclean that Peter noted is the speed of activity, and the wider range of weather conditions that the biocide can be successfully applied in.

“Many traditional biocides cannot be applied in frosty conditions, or within 24 hours of rain. But with Enclean the application window is much wider, and very good results can be achieved even when temperature and weather conditions are far from perfect. The most important factor is correct dilution and application of the product and a few hours for the spray solution to dry.”

Peter’s positive feedback on the new biocide is based on multiple customer testimonials, including Royal Norwich Golf Club and Plymouth City Council.

Peter Todd, Director, and Estates Manager at Royal Norwich Golf Club comments, “During the 2020/21 lockdown the club house patio became covered with algae. Due predominantly to lack of footfall, our high-quality stone slabs had become discoloured and dangerously slippery when wet. We sprayed with Enclean and over the next 2-3 days the algae had been controlled and the wet surface was no longer slippery thus removing a real hazard. Enclean removed the algae completely giving us lasting control, with no detrimental effect on the stone. The treated area remained clean, and the surface regained its original colour despite the cold and wet conditions in Feb/March being less than ideal for biocide application. We also applied the product at the front of the building where the porous surface had a mixture of algae and moss. Again, the control was rapid despite the wet and cold weather conditions. Using a shroud on the knapsack boom allowed us to spray neatly and obtain a sharp edge alongside the fine grass.”

Royal Norwich is now a regular user of this product on hard and porous surfaces. They also use Enclean to keep signage and other golf course equipment in shaded areas free from green growth. This includes the north side of the Turf centre which is shaded and prone to

algae infestation which makes the building look unkept.

David Houghton, Team Leader of Plymouth City Council, endorses Mr Todd’s feedback having also used Enclean. David and his team were looking for quick activity and good efficacy. They saw a vast improvement in only 4 hours after application of Enclean, demonstrating the speed of activity from the product when degreening hard surfaces.

“Overall, and after a thorough test, we were very pleased with the results from the Enclean product. We have found a fast-acting biocide that is safe and easy to use. We are now using this product to de-green areas where residents are concerned about the visual appearance and safety of the hard surfaces.”

Summarising the products recent impact on the biocide market Peter concludes, “Enclean looks to have a strong future in the amenity sector. It is just the type of product end users are looking for - Organic, Effective and Reliable and with a cost-competitive cost of application per m2 compared to other methods of de-greening.

MANAGING SOIL HEALTH

Earth & Turf Products is happy to introduce the first ever stand on topdresser! Though there are a variety of uses, this unit targets compost and sand spreading to manage soil health.

Over recent years, our customers have asked for a stand-on version, one that can cover ground faster than walking, that doesn’t require a towing vehicle, and spreads evenly.

For 2 years, our engineering team sought out the ideal spreader system and came up with the 415-SP.

This unit is self-propelled, with a stand-on plate on the back. It has a 4-wheel hydrostatic drive system which means you have a motor on each wheel, allowing for 4 wheels to drive if need be. The spreader boasts a 15-cu. ft. hopper that can be heaped to 1 yard of light material

and spreads 48” wide at a top speed of 7MPH. The expeller brush spins fast enough to propel material into the grass canopy ahead of you, while stiff bristles regulate the spread.
