CONTEMPLATE THE ULTIMATE ESSENCE OF COMFORT WITH MYSA

MYSA seeks to distinguish itself as an outdoor brand that wants to bring the concept of comfort and timeless design to new standards. Starting out just with a few elegant products in marble like the Mayer center table or the Suspicion side table, it has now grown into a full-fledged reference, having innovative designs across all categories. Discover a bit more about MYSA’s history by contemplating the brand’s classics, new exclusive outdoor products as well as inclusion in a series of luxury projects.

MYSA welcomes everyone to a daring outdoor design experience!

The brand’s classics are beautifully handmade pieces created with the most avant-garde materials, establishing original ways to decorate one’s outdoor projects. They have also led the way to what MYSA is today!

Vertigo is an imposing dining table set to become the focal point of any dining room set. This exclusive piece is embellished with a Carrara marble top and supported by an intersecting stainless steel base that raises up to sublime details. Vertigo is the ideal piece to add to

an outdoor dining area for a modern classic touch.

The Mayer center table was designed to express the luxury lifestyle. Its robust yet elegant form intertwined in marble and steel allows for geometric appeal and a modern aesthetic. Mayer will introduce luxury and style to any type of outdoors.

Sculpted in Carrara marble and lined with polished stainless steel, Suspicion is the ideal side table for an outdoor area, whether by the pool or a relaxing lounge. Bringing a lavishing luxury touch to any space and joining the best of handcraft and design.

The Galea family, comprised of exquisite and highly comfortable designs like an armchair, a sofa, a daybed, and a chaise lounge are a timeless outdoor series made to be durable and weatherresistant, brought to form through a combination of traditional weaving techniques and metalwork from Indonesia and Portugal. Benefiting from a neutral color scheme, these have their enhanced aesthetic through the use of materials such

as stainless steel, powder coating, and synthetic fiber. Each one of these furniture designs is bound to bring an extra layer of style and refinement, thus becoming the idyllic pieces to rest while sunbathing or standing by a fire pit.

The Hampton outdoor designs were inspired by one of the world’s most elegant holiday destinations. The art of lounging gets a new meaning with each Hampton design, from the sun loungers to the armchairs. While simple in form, these outdoor pieces showcase a strong character and comfort, perfect to escape the city noise. Most of the Hampton pieces are completed in vintage wood, polished stainless steel, toffee fabric and crafted using weaving seashell techniques.

New Outdoor Products

Mysa has unveiled a comprehensive range of brand-new designs having innovation in mind. Some pieces are extended models of previous classics but were given a more detailed twist. The following lighting and furniture designs have made their world debut at the prestigious Feria Hábitat Valencia trade show.

The Charla outdoor dining table has distinctive details that make a delicate adjustment between the best hand-worked Teka wood with the warm and golden tones on its Calacatta Gold marble surface. This striking design fits in any contemporary outdoor dining space.

Myllo’s architectural allure is undeniable as its design was inspired by the ambiguity of astounding structures worldwide. The Myllo side table is made with a series of timeless materials displayed in a towering manner, including a Carrara marble base, stainless steel support, and a smoked glass top.

The new Mayer side table was designed as an expression of luxury, combining both marble and glass in an architectural fashion. The veined marble column adds a classic look while the smoked glass takes on a pentagon shape for an extra layer of detail. This side table is complementary to LUXXU’s namesake center table, a series that spruces up any style of outdoor area.

Ideal for a paradisial outdoor setting, the Nebo floor lamp sets into the horizon with its metallic and marbleized structure, a standout combination that adds interest and dramatic flair. Nebo’s base is made of Carrara marble while two diagonal stainless steel frames of slightly different proportions make for a thought-provoking decor statement.

The Magna wall and floor lamps are objects of pure contemplation, inspired by the awe-inspiring beauty of mountains and skylines. Their sculptural appeal is achieved by its glossy metallic frame in polished stainless steel, and the lighting proportion is made of alabaster, diffusing light softly and in a translucent way. Magna’s horizonlike inspiration makes it a superb complement to the outdoors.

In partnership with sister brand, LUXXU, Mysa has been included in an assortment of exclusive luxury houses, providing a wide variety of outdoor living spaces. From Hong Kong to New York, these sumptuous homes were projected to exhibit both brands’ aesthetics while also giving plenty of interior design inspiration throughout.

The outdoor area of this Hong Kong project features organic materials, bespoke wooden floors, green elements, and conservatory furniture that match the style of the region. The grand architectural blocks also represent contemporary architecture and introduce soundness to the area. LUXXU opted for the Galea furniture family to adorn this outdoor area as they combine elegance and modernity in a particular manner. Lastly, the Vertigo dining table in wood and marble becomes the perfect piece to host relaxing dinner gatherings.

Relax with friends or read in the Hampton Wood armchairs and Hampton Wood sofas in a spacious setting, and when night falls? For everyone’s comfort, the center table with a custom fire pit can be lit. Maybe you’d prefer to sunbathe or be shaded in MYSA’s Hampton Wood sun lounger? Along with the Suspicion side table, it never fails to add a lavish luxury touch to any outdoor space! After bathing in the reasonably sized swimming pool, and dinner time is approaching, you can still enjoy the warm breeze and have an outdoor feast with the Charla dining table and Charla dining chairs, which are made with a variety of luxurious and resistant materials, so you can fully enjoy your outdoor living experience.

For this Manchester project, LUXXU wanted to take the outdoor scene to new heights, exploring the rooftop concept even further and enhancing the overall outdoor living experience. All outdoor furniture chosen for this project was conceived by MYSA. The imponent Vertigo Grey dining table in marble and the new upholstered Charla dining chairs become a timeless dining combination that exhales luxury and style.

This outdoor area is also arranged with plenty of natural foliage inspirations that bring one closer to nature. The modular sofa in whiter and grey tones charms the area with its diverse structure while the Magna floor lamps become pure objects of contemplation that perfectly match the sweeping views of Manchester’s skyline.

The perfect outdoor view lies here, with a stunning sight of Manhattan, the heart of the city. This balcony is decorated with a full set of furniture such as the Hampton Wood armchair, the Hampton Wood twoseat sofa, and the Thor center table, especially custom-made in nickel for this space. The urban jungle continues outside and the best viewpoint of the city is completed.

Once placed on the elevation, the water depth should sit just below the nozzles. Adjust accordingly if this is not so. You may then alter the nozzles as desired.

Next, connect the fountain’s cable to the external control unit. Once the control unit is powered, the Water Quintet will start. Remember to cover the control unit with the cover provided in order to protect it from the rain.

ENHANCE YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE

The addition of a water feature to a private garden or large commercial landscape will enhance the wellbeing, experience and feeling of those who use the space. As established water feature designers and innovators, Foras are experienced in providing solutions for every placement. The company has grown organically over 20 years and now boasts over 10,000 sqm of landscaped show gardens at their Norfolk premises, complete with over 50 running water features, tile, flagstone, coping and cladding options combined with inspirational planting.

Designing and manufacturing in house allows flexibility for clients to specify extra features, combining exquisite natural stone pieces with new materials, open water pools and bespoke steelwork. Features can then be enhanced with coping and cladding. An upsurge in water

feature popularity and trends towards individuality, combined with a fast-moving property market, has created a need for lighter, compact, and portable features.

It has historically been impossible to site a feature on a roof terrace, in rented accommodation, or a listed building. Foras water boxes are available in Italian porcelain, Corten steel and powder coated in a range of colours. They are compact, lightweight, and mimic a raised bed without the permanence and associated cost of building work. This allows customers to enjoy a water feature without digging, on roof gardens, balconies and even indoors!

Integrated LED illumination allows a feature to be appreciated long after the sun goes down, as well as brightening the garden in the darker winter months. For commercial spaces illumination adds impact and

really draws people to the feature, making it the focal point as intended by the designer of the space. Foras water features are made from a wide range of materials, from optically clear acrylic to genuine copper to natural stone. When combined with water and light, they each display active water movement and create a sensory experience.

Looking to the future, Foras are developing a curated range of features with watertight engineered reservoirs integrated into the design, which will provide the ultimate solution in terms of flexibility, durability, and longevity. Some will be available for hire, compete with installation/removal. An investment for now and the future, combining timeless materials and timeless design.

WHAT IS WOVEN STEEL FENCING?

(We are asked a lot about the difference between mild and Corten steel so we have written a blog on the subject which can be viewed on our website) The galvanised steel option is unlike anything we have seen and (in our opinion) suited to more contemporary schemes.

Why choose a woven steel fence?

- Aesthetics

The woven, weathered steel is a perfect backdrop to any scheme or as a feature in itself

- Longevity

Made completely of steel the life expectancy is in excess of 25 years

- Versatility

Create straight lines, angles or flowing curves. Accommodate any slope by stepping the top and / or the bottom of the fence.

- Zero maintenance

Unlike a timber fence, woven steel just gets better with age and neglect!

Where can you use a woven steel fence?

- Anywhere you need a screen

- As a feature in its own right

- For terracing or raised beds

- Adding height to the top of walls

- Or simply a beautiful boundary fence

How to order

Well, it’s exactly that, but let us explain a bit more…

Developed by Steelscapes around 8 years ago, initially just as a one off for a client who wanted to screen their oil tank with a longer lasting alternative to the existing crumbling willow screen.

This first woven steel fence, set on the side of a busy road inadvertently led to demand for more and today Steelscapes install and supply their woven steel fencing across the UK to designers, landscapers and developers.

Woven steel fencing is offered in mild, Corten and galvanised steel. The mild and Corten steel look almost identical, the weathered tones appear almost organic.

- We supply build your own woven steel fence kits, it’s simple to install and offers the most flexibility.

- We can also supply Corten and galvanised woven steel panels.

- Or we have have a number of installers around the Uk we can recommend.

What ever your query it starts with a conversation, speak to the lovely Dawn in the office on 01485 524251 or see our website for full details. www.steelscapes.co.uk

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Why not make better use of the space in your garden, and let us build you a room that is fit for purpose and can be used all year round? We seldom use our gardens in the winter months, but having a beautiful studio gives you the perfect reason to enjoy your outdoors every day. Making use of dead space or replacing the old shed with a good-looking garden office which includes separate storage, will encourage you to declutter and create an attractive multi-purpose room in the garden that will also add value to your house.

Home Office

While working from home has become ‘the new normal’, helping us all to strike a better work-life balance, saving you time and money on the daily commute and reducing associated stress, finding the ideal workspace in your property may not be so simple.

Working at the kitchen table or in your bedroom is never ideal…we can design the perfect space that takes you away from the distraction of household chores, and at the end of the day, your work doesn’t seep into family life.

Garden Gym

Another result of lockdown was the rise in sales of exercise equipment, and a garden studio makes an ideal gym, creating more space in the house, and giving you a dedicated room for working out. Whether you’re into pilates or Peloton, weights or yoga, our garden studios provide you with an airy, clean space to focus on you.

You also have the added bonus of keeping unwanted smells outside that certain foods can leave behind.

TAP INTO THE TREND FOR INDOOR OUTDOOR KITCHEN DESIGN THIS SPRINGTIME

Create a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors and make the most of the changing of the seasons, with hard-wearing, nature-inspired spaces from CRL Stone.

Embrace the huge trend for kitchens that take their influence from the outdoors and get closer to nature by choosing consistent flooring for the interior and adjoining exterior space. Perfect for barbecues outdoors on sunny days and wining and dining with friends and family inside when the great British weather takes hold, the latest flooring solutions from CRL Stone create a seamless continuity and a cohesive look.

Creating a seamless sense of flow is important in such spaces, something that is achievable by choosing the same flooring for the kitchen and the adjoining exterior space. Such continuity helps to draw the eye outside from the kitchen and vice versa and results in a cohesive look.

The flooring chosen must be suitable for all weathers - frost-proof and slip resistant, but UV resistant too, to ensure its colour won’t fade from exposure to direct sunlight. Ceralsio

and MDI surfaces from CRL Stone offer all these qualities and more, making it an ideal solution for indoor outdoor spaces.

Choose a natural effect surface like MDi Ocean Stone to bring the outdoors in and vice versa, while options such as Ceralsio Croma White and Croma Grey are ideal for creating a contemporary indooroutdoor space that runs on a continuous finish.

MULTI STEMMED, MULTI-FACETED AND MULTI-FUNCTIONAL

If a stylish statement is what you require in a planting scheme, no matter the size of the scheme, then a multi-stem tree will fit that bill and more. Multi-stem trees are one of the most popular tree forms that are used in the industry and with multifaceted uses and attributes, it is not hard to see why.

Multi-stem trees are multi-faceted and multi-functional with an open structure at ground to eye level allowing the eye to see through the stems to the landscape beyond without blocking any views They are often used in show gardens for this very reason.

The multi-stem form leads to the tree being narrower at the bottom and wider at the top giving a larger amount of foliage and providing shade and shelter whilst still being able to appreciate the stems below.

There is a myriad of choices when looking at options whether you are

looking for bark, foliage cover and autumn colour.

Tree species grown for their ornamental bark make particularly good choices as the bark can be appreciated at eye level. We find that the most popular options for ornamental bark include relied on favourites, Betula utilis jacquemontii. Alongside this excellent tree choice Betula albosinensis ‘Fascination’ with its satin like deep orange peeling bark revealing variable colours beneath is proving a worthy rival. As with all Betula, Fascination has stunning butter yellow autumn foliage.

Another majestic choice for bark interest is Lagerstroemia. Often used in the Mediterranean region, Lagerstroemia has gained in popularity in the UK in recent years. The bark is extremely tactile and smooth to the touch with peeling layers revealing patches of colour of cinnamon, orange and grey. The

flowers are crinkled and papery in appearance in either hot pink, pink or purple. The autumn foliage is worthy of this tree’s inclusion in a project with hues of yellow, gold and red.

Prunus serrula is one of the top choices for ornamental bark multistem trees. When planted where the winter sun illuminates the red-brown shiny bark it is a show stopper of a tree. The leaves turn a dramatic yellow in the autumn.

Whatever your choice, multi-stem trees can be used to great effect in smaller domestic style gardens and larger open spaces due to their ability to bring the feeling of open space to a design. With so many attractive features you will be spoilt for choice in our newly expanded multi-stem tree field there are over 140 options to select from.

CREATING PRIVACY WITH SCREENING TREES

Semi-mature trees can be planted to achieve effective screening from the offset with evergreens being preferred for this purpose as they screen throughout the year. However, a planting scheme that includes deciduous trees can provide rich contrast and seasonal interest.

Screening Trees

for formal screening and where space is limited. These are our best trees that are in stock:

• Ilex aquifolium Nellie R Stevens

Ligustrum japonicum

• Magnolia grandiflora

• Photinia frasari ‘Red Robin’

• Prunus laurocerasus ‘Novita’

Special Offer

Privacy in gardens can be created using trees to hide or screen out an undesirable view; they can also be used to draw the eye to a specific feature. Trees grown for this purpose often have a clear stem up to fence panel height around 1.8-2m with a full bushy canopy above, forming a good screen above the fence line. This type of screening is particularly useful if the garden is overlooked by neighbouring properties or to retain lower-level exposure to an attractive wall or area. Screening trees can be designed to create a focal point, perhaps to make the most of a feature.

Practicality Brown can supply a range of top quality trees for screening, which are particularly useful for creating privacy. This is our selection of the best screening trees, and all are in stock at our nursery in Iver, Bucks:

• Eriobotrya japonica

Ilex aquifolium Nellie R Stevens

• Ilex castaneifolia

• Ligustrum japonicum

Magnolia grandiflora

Osmanthus aquifolium

• Photinia fraseri ‘Red Robin’

• Pinus nigra

Prunus laurocerasus ‘Novita’

• Vibernum lucidum

Pleached Trees

We also have a range of pleached trees which can be used in the same way; pleached trees can be effective

A 30% discount will be applied to ex VAT orders of trees.

The discount applies to the tree stock value of the order only, not to delivery and planting etc.

OUTDOORS TO EXPERIENCE PEDRALI COLLECTIONS CUSTOMISE

OPEN-AIR SPACES

As spring approaches, the desire to spend time outdoor is growing, even more now that trends are leading us to experience open-air spaces as true extensions of livings.

Enhancing them therefore becomes essential: dehors of bars, hotels and restaurants or domestic spaces such as terraces and gardens must ensure people’s calm and reflect the identity of the place where they are located.

Sofas characterised by soft waterrepellent upholstery and handwoven or made from recycled materials seats are protagonists of Pedrali outdoor comfort, offering design and functional solutions. Collections conceived and produced to provide users’ well-being, defined by excellent technical performances and aesthetics, in a perfect harmony of nuances and materials, thanks also to the choice of refined textured fabrics designed specifically for outdoor use.

Made with high-quality materials, these collections guarantee resistance to different weather conditions, easy cleaning and durability.

An armchair designed for the outdoors, but it is equally suited to any setting for pure relaxation is Lamorisse, designed by CMP Design. Its aluminium frame makes it ideal for a waterfront veranda, shaded outdoor areas, for a poolside table, and even on a ship deck. Its lightweight structure in extruded aluminium, with oval legs welded to round tube armrests, holds a large and enveloping cushion. The main feature of this armchair is the contrast between the sober shape of the supporting frame and the use of a lavish, enveloping cushion.

The seat is supported by elastic belts that offer maximum comfort and strength which almost disappear to focus the attention on the cushion, consisting of multiple sections joined by a zip and folded to create a shell.

Pedrali outdoor sofas create microworlds of comfort en plein air. Reva Cocoon, whose very name evokes a relaxing, dreamy ambience, is charaterised by soft lines and generous sizes. Designed by Patrick Jouin, is a piece of furniture that is highly adaptable and configurable in a variety of ways to ensure maximum comfort and personalisation. The result is a new concept of elegance marked by pure lines and a refined appearance. The line stands out for its striking backrests in stainless steel woven with rope in weather-resistant polypropylene made 100% in Italy by expert craftsmen. The feeling of envelopment is enhanced by the soft cushions that rest on the structure and are available in different shapes: rectangular, square and round. With its generous volumes and high backrests, Reva Cocoon creates a space within the space, offering protection and shelter from the outside world for those seeking a moment of relaxation and escape.

The woven also defines Babila Twist armchair designed by Odo Fioravanti made of steel and characterised by a large and welcoming shell. Once again, the woven covering the body is made of a flat, weather-resistant polypropylene rope. A comfortable cushion made from dry-feel polyurethane foam that dries quickly, is covered in fabric for outdoor use.

PORCELAIN DECKING:

AN ATTRACTIVE FLOORING SOLUTION WITH AN A1 FIRE RATING

Dura Composites’ porcelain decking range, Dura Deck® Inspire, is an A1 fire-rated deck plank balcony solution, especially suited to applications where the building height exceeds 11m, following the change of legislation for medium and high rise buildings.

Dura Deck® Inspire is completely resistant to open flames and extreme temperatures, with an A1 fire rating in accordance with BS EN 13501. This highly-engineered luxury product has the appearance of traditional decking but is perfect for all high-rise applications. This may include new builds and renewals, such as rooftops, terraces and balconies where a class A fire rating is required, and where the non-traditional appearance and light-weight hollow design of aluminium planks may not be desirable.

The new product can be easily fitted to concrete balconies using Dura’s proven aluminium sub-frame system, but as a market first, Dura Composites has also developed a patent-pending plank retainer system for installing Dura Deck® Inspire on open steel framed balconies. The retainer enables a floating decking system to be installed under selfweight, without the risk of planks falling should a breakage happen.

The Dura Deck Inspire Plank Retainer also helps prevent wind uplift and facilitates the quick removal of the decking for maintenance or similar.

The decking plank product can span up to a maximum of 750mm at the design standards’ requirement of 2kN - which when compared with

timber or WPC decking, is a marked increase in spanning capability. It has been expertly crafted to maintain the look of traditional timber without compromising on strength and durability. At 1.8m long and a width of 200mm, the products are the only porcelain products available that achieve a true timber ‘plank’ appearance rather than the ‘slab’ effect normally associated with porcelain.

As well as a life expectancy of 60 years and a 10-year structural warranty, Dura Deck® Inspire is designed for easy installation, working seamlessly with Dura Composites’ proven fire-rated aluminium adjustable pedestal and bearer substrate combination in any outdoor environment.

Attractive and strong, the planks will help building owners achieve compliance for their concrete and steel framed balconies and other projects at altitudes such as rooftops and terraces where traditional timber is no longer an acceptable option. In addition to its strength, the excellent anti-slip performance of Dura Deck® Inspire in all conditions makes it the ideal for areas that receive large amounts of footfall, such as commercial pedestrian walkways, and areas prone to wetter conditions, such as pool-sides, skywalks and other outdoor walkways.

The porcelain decking planks are UV colour stable, do not scratch, scuff, warp or rot, and are very low maintenance. Porcelain has little to no water absorption, meaning Dura Deck® Inspire can withstand fluctuations in temperature with no risk of deformation and returns a ‘low’ slip potential result in all weather conditions. The product is also cool under foot even in higher temperatures meaning that the deck can be enjoyed with bare feet.

Dura Deck® Inspire is available in four attractive colours: Merula, Dove, Juniper and Wren. Every decking plank sports variegated wood grain patterns, creating a beautiful surface finish that varies from plank to plank and as such achieves the natural look and feel of timber decking.

Each porcelain plank measures a market-leading 1800mm long and will fit easily into a typical lift for transportation to rooftops and balconies for installation. At 200mm wide, the decking strikes the perfect balance between strength, durability and a traditional timber appearance. The 20mm deep planks are supplied in pairs and weigh just 16.5kgs each, meaning that they are easy for one person to manoeuvre around site safely.

Dura Deck® Inspire planks are produced in Europe with 61% of pre-consumer recycled materials. All the raw materials used in the production come from a radius of 500 miles of the manufacturing plant and the products’ cardboard packaging materials are both made from recycled paper and are further recyclable.

Free samples of each colour can be requested through the website to allow customers to experience the look and feel of porcelain Dura Deck® Inspire first-hand before placing an order for their projects.

Dura Deck® Inspire can be purchased direct from Dura Composites. To ensure products are affordable and competitive, special price bands are offered for repeat customers who hold a trade account. Those who aren’t already a trade account holder can get in contact with the team at info@duracomposites.com to request an application form. www.duracomposites.com

CAMO LAUNCHES THE NEW COMPOSITE DECK FASTENING SYSTEM

The CAMO deck fastening system helps deck builders to install deck areas in a speedy manner, providing them with a high quality finish. A range of tools are available for various types of decking, including timber and composite.

Timber Solutions

The CAMO Marksman system is the ultimate solution for timber deck areas.

The tool clamps over the deck board and guides screws into the corner of the board to ensure the screws aren’t visible.

Attached to the tool are two gap spacers that ensure consistent spacing between deck boards throughout the area. The gap spacers come in 1.6, 3.2 or 5mm sizes and can be changed over depending on the size of gap required.

The patented CAMO screws auger material out of the timber to reduce splitting and cracking, whilst

providing a splinter free deck area making it barefoot safe. The screws are 48mm or 60mm in length and are available in Protech or Stainless Steel finishes.

Composite Solutions

To complement the timber solutions, CAMO also supplies the ClipDrive for installing composite decking. The CAMO ClipDrive tool is a must-have for any composite deck installer.

The stand-up tool allows you to install decking up to 5x faster, while comfortably standing. The weighted nose easily targets the screw head meaning you can quickly move the tool from clip to clip with no scuffs or marks on the decking.

The CAMO Lever is a tool that compliments the ClipDrive by locking boards together so spacing is consistent throughout when securing the clips into the board. The lever also straightens any warped boards to enhance the finish of decking projects.

The hidden deck clips can be secured onto timber or metal joists, and come in 90, 450 or 900 box quantities to suit your job size. The tool and clips work on the majority of leading deck brands and are covered under the CAMO warranty.

To find out more information, visit camofasteners.uk or email sales@kyocera-senco.co.uk.

GROWING CONFIDENCE IN PRESERVATIVE TREATED TIMBER WITH WPA BENCHMARK

Do you know the difference between a deck joist and a floor joist? The truth is they look the same. But, whilst one piece of preservative treated wood may look like any other, the level of protection could be very different.

British Standards require timber treatment processes are tailored to the timber component’s end use. A floor or roof joist will not be treated to a level durable enough for outdoor purposes.

Nowhere is the fitness for purpose of treated wood more important than for applications in contact with the ground, frequently wet and/or providing exterior structural support - categorised as Use Class 4 (UC4).

Typical UC4 applications include: fence posts, retaining walls, landscaping timbers, playground equipment, decking posts, joists and beams, boardwalk substructures and any external application where structural integrity is essential for user safety.

After 2 years of their ‘Make Sure it’s 4’ campaign, independent trade body, the Wood Protection Association (WPA) is beginning to

see a greater awareness of timber treatment across the supply chain. Supported by industry organisations including the Timber Decking & Cladding Association (TDCA), the campaign focusses on differentiating between interior and exterior applications and in particular, ground contact timber. Knowledge of when to specify Use Class 4 has grown significantly – and there’s more UC4 products for sale. But as a buyer how can you be sure you are getting what you pay for?

Finding a supplier you can trust

That’s where WPA Benchmark quality accreditation fits in. The scheme is designed to give purchasers greater confidence when sourcing preservative treated wood components.

Treaters must pass an initial verification audit and subsequent annual surveillance audits, providing

evidence to demonstrate they are treating correctly to industry standards. Compliant companies are awarded WPA Benchmark Approved Treater accreditation.

An Approved Treater may then also obtain the accreditation of WPA Benchmark Approved Product. This covers treated wood product lines which demonstrate through analysis, that the correct penetration and retention of preservative is consistently achieved.

So look out for WPA Benchmark badge when you next source your decking and landscaping timbers, or ask for third-party quality accreditation.

To discover more about the work of the WPA or source a WPA Benchmark Approved Treater, visit: www.thewpa.org.uk

44 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine DECKING
The timber treatment plant at Bond Timber – WPA Benchmark Approved Treaters with Approved Product status (specific fence post ranges).

Interior and exterior environments are very different. Timber in ground contact and permanently exposed to wetting, requires extra protection. So, it’s important to know what level of treatment is required. To ensure you get what you pay for, it’s essential to buy from a supplier you can trust.

Independent timber trade body – the Wood Protection Association, operates the WPA Benchmark Scheme. It provides audited verification of a company’s ability to treat wood to current industry Standards.

– If you’re buying treated timber, look for third-party accreditation, such as WPA Benchmark and always ask for product documentation, including proof of treatment.

– If you sell treated timber, ensure it’s fit for purpose by sourcing from a WPA Benchmark Approved Treater.

DURA COMPOSITES COMPLETES DECKING PROJECT FOR THE LOCK, GREENFORD QUAY

The decking areas were originally specified with artificial grass but due to the increased need for fire safety on projects of this nature, the Dura Deck system was chosen by the architect as a more suitable option.

Wanting to create a natural look and feel that enhanced the attractive waterside setting, but which met stringent safety protocols, Valley Provincial chose Dura Deck Flip in the Weathered Cedar and Pebble Grey colour pairing.

Dura Deck Flip comes in lengths of 3.66m and is easy to install thanks to its subsurface fixing system, meaning no screws or nails are needed fix the boards in place –leaving a perfect, clean, barefoot friendly deck - perfect for the yoga sessions which are already running for new residents on the roof terrace.

Dura Composites’ reversible decking boards were installed on the terrace within the communal garden of The Lock at Greenford Quay in West London to enhance the area’s natural beauty, whilst meeting strict safety standards.

The Lock at Greenford Quay is a development of 194 waterfront apartments, located in the London Borough of Ealing in West London, featuring a beautifully landscaped garden with innovative seating areas and a stunning rooftop terrace with panoramic views.

Landscape Architects and Environmental Planners, Standerwick Land Design, worked with landscape services specialists, Valley Provincial, to bring the new areas to life. With over 45 years’ experience, Valley Provincial has won multiple awards for its high-end commercial and residential projects.

The company was responsible for the installation of Dura Composites’ Class Bfl fire-rated Dura Deck Flip decking and A2 fire-rated substructure system on the terrace and within the communal garden.

The deck is supported by aluminium Dura Pedestal and Dura Bearers with an anti-glare anthracite coloured powder-coated finish which achieves a Class A2 fire rating in accordance with EN13501-1 and can be combined in 42 different ways to create a precise height, which can be as small as a 10mm adjustment when installing any bearer option in combination with the 25.5mm pedestal.

MAKING THE MOST OF MANDATORY SUDS

An important government review published in January announced that Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) will soon become mandatory on developments in England, with implementation of Schedule 3 of the Flood and Water Management Act.

A public consultation later this year will help to shape the new approach to mandatory SuDS, with implementation expected during 2024. National SuDS Standards will then be applied throughout England, largely based on experience in Wales where Schedule 3 has been in operation for some years.

New ‘SuDS Approving Bodies’ (SABs) will be set up within unitary authorities or county councils to approve SuDS schemes before construction of drainage systems on new and redeveloped sites (except single buildings or permitted development under 100 m2) or connection to public sewers. The

SABs may also adopt and maintain approved SuDS that serve more than one property.

Nature Based Solutions

SuDS are essential in the fight against flooding and pollution –particularly with overloaded sewers, urbanisation and climate change –but should also offer other benefits, including amenity and biodiversity. To achieve these goals, SABs will be looking for well-designed, multifunctional SuDS on or near the surface with flow controls.

For example, The Welsh Standards say: ‘The SuDS approach mimics natural drainage, managing surface runoff at or close to the surface and as close to its source as practicable, controlling the flow (volume and rate of runoff) and providing a range of additional benefits’. This approach has been demonstrated to cost less than conventional piped drainage, requiring no dedicated land-take for storage.

The key to successful SuDS design is water storage strategically deployed around a site within SuDS elements, such as green/blue roofs, swales, basins, ponds and permeable paving, forming discrete sub-catchments. Essentially, each sub-catchment should have a small orifice flow control to manage greenfield runoff rates. This concept avoids the extra land-take, pipework and costs of large, heavily engineered control devices and storage structures, such as pipes or tanks.

Essential Economic Flow Controls

Developed specifically for SuDS, Controflow flow control chambers provide passive operation solutions to current SuDS requirements on developments. With their low cost and shallow construction – no more than 1.2m deep – Controflow chambers can be used more widely and wherever needed, to optimise flows from each sub-catchment, as well as at the site perimeter, while

48 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine BOUND SURFACING
Controflow SuDS baskets simplify inlets, outlets and erosion control for SuDS.

realising a key aim of SuDS to keep water management on or near the surface.

SuDSstore co-founder Bob Bray said: ‘As a SuDS designer for over 20 years, it was clear to me that a new approach was needed to meet the aspiration of a ‘controlled flow of

clean water’ from developments. The solution was small, simple flow controls for shallow construction to maximise storage opportunities. The new generation Controflow range has been developed to provide straightforward, simple flow control products to satisfy today’s SuDS requirements’.

Low-cost SuDS Components

Controflow chambers can also maximise storage in permeable paving on sloping sites, with terraced compartments separated by simple check dams where necessary. They can also detain water to optimise ground infiltration, so reducing discharge volumes. Controflow chambers also simplify verification of performance required by approving and adopting authorities, and are easy to access for inspection, measurement or sampling.

These low-cost components made using recyclable materials for use throughout SuDS management trains are simple to install, with minimal maintenance over the long term.

All orifice flow controls should be protected to prevent debris from entering the chamber. Use of Controflow chambers with permeable paving avoids the need for orifice protection, as this is provided by the pavement surface and sub-base.

In other situations, Controflow SuDS Baskets for filling with stone act as attractive inlets or outlets that protect pipe openings and flow control orifices, or as erosioncontrol to enable gentle water flows down slopes. The baskets are manufactured in stainless steel mesh and supplied with all the components for quick assembly on site.

Importantly for biodiversity, Controflow chambers, inlet and outlet baskets –together with short pipe connections – reduce the risk of wildlife mortality dramatically.

DREAMING OF THE PERFECT PATIO?

sector alike. The all-weather, sweepin jointing compound is a quick, effective, and attractive way to fill joints between paving.

As paving trends develop, products need to evolve with them.

EASYJoint has done precisely that with the new EASYJoint Select range of solid colours, featuring Tungsten, Carbon, Bronze, and Jet Black. The solid colours provide a more uniform, modern finish compared to the natural colours of the original EASYJoint range. EASYJoint Select is suitable for porcelain and natural stone paving and retains the sweepin application method that made EASYJoint so popular.

Associate Director Jeff Carter comments, “Azpects are excited to see our EASYJoint range continue to grow, with eight products now in the family. We pride ourselves on keeping up with the latest trends in the marketplace and do not doubt that this bespoke range of colours will satisfy our users’ needs.”

Azpects are also leading the way in sustainability, introducing partrecycled tubs as early as 2020. All tubbed products are now made from at least 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and are fully recyclable. PCR offers a second life to plastic products that might otherwise have ended up in landfill, allowing the contents of your household recycling bin to be remade into something new.

With summers set to become longer and hotter, more people than ever are looking to make the most of their outdoor spaces. Forget gloomy, grey concrete; Brits are looking to capture Mediterranean vibes with pristine porcelain, fully functioning bars, and even outdoor kitchens. The key to the perfect outdoor living space is in the details: complementary colours, a smooth finish and quality materials.

Since its launch in 2010, EASYJoint from Azpects has been a marketleading jointing compound loved by landscape professionals and the DIY

Azpects’ tubs are all 100% recyclable, further reducing the material sent to landfill.

GREEN-TECH’S URBAN TREE SYSTEM PROMOTES THE USE OF LESS PLASTIC

About the project:

The Battery Retail Park at Selley Oak is located on the former site of the Birmingham Battery and Metal Company steel factory, first established in 1798. The term battery, referring to the method of forming metal, not the manufacture of batteries as commonly thought.

Located approximately three miles from Birmingham city centre, the site has undergone a recent refurbishment, including the development of a new retail park,

Sainsburys Superstore, and student accommodation, all sited around the main customer carpark.

A major part of the project for the contractors was the reclamation of the ground and cleaning up a very toxic site, before any development could commence.

Green-tech’s involvement: The project comprised of nearly forty tree pits over two phases between 2018 and 2020. The first phase was contracted to Bernhards

Landscapes of Warwickshire, and the second to McPhillips (Wellington) of Shropshire; both of which Green-tech has worked with for around fifteen years.

The tree pits were set into soft central reservations around the main car parking area, although to get the required rooting volume to ensure healthy establishment and future growth, the tree pits extended out under the parking bays to some extent.

56 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

Green-tech has been manufacturing its range of Green-tree soil for nearly twenty years, and over 400 tonnes of clean, manufactured ArborRaft topsoil, and subsoil was supplied for the tree pits. In order to use a nice

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

friable, organic topsoil underneath the paving, the contractors opted for Green-tech’s ArborRaft tree pit support system, rather than a traditional, plastic-heavy, deep-pit system.

The ArborRaft acts as a sub-base replacement, supporting the paving above, pedestrian, or vehicular, whilst protecting the soft soil below from risk of compaction. It has three big advantages over traditional deep-pit crate systems.

Firstly - it sits over the top of the tree pit, taking its structural support from a 500mm wide ledge cut into the surrounding formation ground, meaning there is no plastic whatsoever in the actual rooting area of the tree pit.

Secondly - its shallow profile, just 150mm deep means that there is rarely any conflict with underground services, it isn’t deep enough.

And third - ArborRaft uses less than a third of the plastic of traditional crate-style tree pit systems, so it’s better for the budget and the environment.

Each tree pit also contains a strap anchor to keep the trees stable during the all-important establishment phase, along with a mona irrigation rings. In this instance, to provide even more protection from the risk of vehicular damage, the trees were also stabilised with double-staking, crossbar, and soft rubber ties.

Alasdair Innes – Green-tech Specification Advisor comments, “We were delighted to contribute to such a high-profile scheme. We recently visited the site nearly four years after the first trees were planted, and although it was autumn, the trees still look happy and healthy. It is nice to see Silver Birch being used, as the white bark helps to lift the muted colours of the ground planting.”

CONNECTING BRITAIN

The road and rail network in Britain is undergoing significant improvement work to better connect the country and support economic growth.

The development of new parkand-ride facilities, cycle lanes, and pedestrian crossings is aimed at making Britain’s road and rail network more efficient, reliable, and accessible, and supporting economic growth and improved quality of life for all.

At GreenBlue Urban we are thrilled to see the use of integrated landscape design: The design of new and upgraded road and rail infrastructure with surrounding landscapes, providing opportunities for incorporating nature-based solutions to offer a range of environmental and social benefits. Some of our examples include; -

St Peter’s Square Manchester –which closed in 2015 for 14 months for total redevelopment to include a four-platform interchange. The inclusion of GreenBlue Solutions for urban tree planting has given this scheme the iconic wow factor and highlights all key benefits of additional biodiversity, urban cooling, water attenuation and air cleaning as well as stunning visual amenities.

Enhancement at Finsbury Park, part of the City North Place development in London enabled an enhanced entrance to the station

incorporating trees in hard paving, architecturally designed to soften the “concrete canyon” effect, along with providing easier access to buses and other modes of public travel.

Green roofs and walls are being integrated into new and existing road and rail infrastructure, providing habitat for wildlife, reducing heat islands, and improving air and water quality.

The new Elizabeth Line underground line has given London some amazing opportunities to regenerate zones around the new and improved stations. One of the most dramatic new stations is the Canary Wharf interchange –probably London’s most stunning Roof Garden! Installed with GreenBlue Urban’s StrataCells to give connected uncompacted soil volumes, the showcase plants from around the world, giving an oasis of peace high above the bustle of the Isle of Dogs commercial zone.

Bioretention rain gardens are being used to manage stormwater runoff from roads and railways, reducing the risk of flooding and

improving water quality. However currently Highways are taking the lead in transforming buildouts and car parks with the use of the HydroPlanter, collaborating with Water Authorities a win-win for nature-based solutions!

Measures are being taken to minimize the impact of new and upgraded infrastructure on local ecosystems and biodiversity, including the creation of new habitats and the restoration of degraded areas. This has been of particular interest with the construction of HS2, which are using an approach that is consistent with the National Planning Policy Framework.

GreenBlue is thrilled to be supporting with their knowledge not just with our ArborSystem Tree Planting along developed sites but on BNG and on their new off-grid street lighting Reluminate, which can be used as a permanent or temporary solution.

Making the road and rail network in Britain more sustainable and resilient and providing numerous life-changing environmental benefits for local communities to thrive.

CARRIER OF NATURAL ELEMENTS, MOMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL REFORMATION

- OCT CHAOHU NATURAL AND CULTURAL CENTRE, CHANGE ARCHITECTS

the light and shadow, rain and snow, air these smaller elements. In other words, the carrier of architectural design concept is derived from nature. Architecture is no longer just the scale and space required for human activities, but more importantly to express the natural elements that these architects want to display, and on this basis, let citizens and their behaviour activities feel the self-shaping space of the natural element.

The overall plans and elevations of the building are projected by the external shape of the mountain and the earth contour. On this individual building block, the architects began to carry out fascinating and creative imagination about a wiggly worm in the ground: wormholes formed as worms crawl through are the boundary of inside and outside buildings. The wormholes shaped by worm drilling out of the surface (building) that is the result what the architect hopes and deliberately form. This node naturally forms the location of the viewing platform.

OCT Chaohu Natural and Cultural Centre is located at the foot of the mountain between the natural mountains and the city, which stretches for tens of kilometres from northeast to southwest on the north side of Chaohu city. This project could be regarded as a critical point of the local natural environment and urban domestic life. The purpose of architectural building is to demonstrate the indigenous cultural heritage on the one hand,

and seem to stand on the fence for the future domestic entertainment life in city on the other hand.

The logic of the architectural cultural centre concept derived from the idea of natural elements. How to make the background of the mountain, the earth ‘s vegetation, geological context and so on to form the body of the building, and through the formation of the building body as a carrier to show

Topography is incorporated including the treatment of the relationship with the surrounding environment as a whole.

Architecture will embody out the strength that the architect intends to express which include the sense of strength, spaciousness, and the perspective of experience sensation. Thus, the architecture offers an authentic spatial effect, not only focus on whole monolithic architecture, but it also claims incorporate with localization, physical landform and peripheral regions.

‘Low tech’ or ‘high tech’? Is there a more suitable systematic construction control of complex streamlined architectural design for current Chinese local construction techniques?

The structure of the building adopts steel structure to ensure the project construction speed and controllability. On the top and bottom of the structure layer, the roof in-situ pouring and GRC hanging board are combined respectively. At this time, the concrete roof poured on the surface and the inner cavity GRC hanging board are not final layers. After the construction of the foundation level was completed, the architects used two methods of planting roof and spraying lightweight concrete to complete the shaping of the upper and lower veneer layers.

Compared with the curtain wall system, these two methods are both malleable finishes, and their inherent characteristics determine that it must have a better match

with the streamlined shape, and greatly reduce the tolerance for accuracy.

Due to the large difference in the slope rate of the building roof, the building adopts a variety of anti-skid treatment strategies. On gentle slopes, large mesh anti-skid partitions are used, while on steeper slopes, dense hole partitions are used. Fill 50mm of formula soil in the corresponding anti-skid partitions of different densities to ensure that the roof vegetation can survive.

MAKING EVERY PAVER PERMEABLE

The increasing urbanisation of the countryside and changes in rainfall patterns has led to much higher volumes of surface water entering sewerage systems and water courses.

This, in turn, has resulted in higher instances of flooding in city centres, greater expenditure on new sewerage systems and insurance companies increasing premiums on properties built in vulnerable areas. One of the many solutions currently being promoted to help alleviate these problems is permeable paving. Traditionally specified and implemented via nibbed paving products that require a base and sub-base that allows the movement of storm water to drain through the nibs on the edge of the blocks whilst also effectively trapping suspended solids that filter pollutants from the water.

Hardscape offer a unique permeable paving system called Drainjoint which can be used across all types of natural and man-made hard landscape paving materials together with specific conventional pavers in both concrete and clay. Drainjoint allows for any material, be it natural stone, clay, concrete or even their popular Kellen range, to be laid as

a permeable paving system which totally removes the need for pavers to carry nibs or extensions and the requirement for large aggregate joints that also filters pollutants from the drainage water. It also removes the need for paving to be laid to fall and additional surface drainage.

Trees are an important part of our natural life support system; they have a vital role to play in the sustainability of our towns and cities and we need to take better care of them, both now and in the future, yet we see them starved of natural food and water and damaged at their roots by earthworks, particularly in developed areas of towns and car parks.

As a result of the built environment soil compaction can inhibit or prevent natural root growth. BERTHOUD KNAPSACKS DELIVER CONSISTENCY IN PROFESSIONAL AND DOMESTIC TURFCARE

they were short of volunteers. They liked what I did and they’ve grown into one of my sportsground customers.”

The standards and precision of professional turfcare are being applied increasingly in the domestic setting.

Will Dunger, owner of Will’s Norfolk Lawns, has a foot in both camps, delivering high-end services to gardens and sports clubs across much of the county.

“I’ve played cricket and football all my life,” says Will, 27, “and worked in lawncare and grounds maintenance for several years.

“Garden lawncare can be seen as the bottom of the food chain and I aimed to change that when I set up the business in 2018 by bringing the methods and machinery of the professional sector into the domestic setting.”

That includes the type of scarifiers, aerators and sprayers his dad Paul employs at Fakenham Cricket Club, where he and fellow local residents help maintain the square and outfield.

“The group of volunteers has been shrinking for some time,” Will explains, “so I help out preparing the ground for the new season, renovating the square in autumn and providing winter maintenance.”

The same is true at Horning Bowls Club. “I lived there and helped maintain the green for them when

Common to both his domestic and professional service delivery are the Berthoud Vermorel 2000 knapsack sprayers Will and assistant Alex rely on to apply turf treatment liquids, whatever the surface. “The whole industry is moving to an environmentally more sensitive stance,” states Will, “and I fully support the change. We strive to avoid spraying chemicals such as herbicides and fungicides and now use more organic nutrients.

“I’ve used the 16l Vermorel 2000s since I started the business and cannot remember having any issues with them at all. Straightforward to maintain, they are sturdy, convenient to calibrate and use, easy to fill and clean, and deliver a high level of consistency of spray.

“When you can spend much of your time with a knapsack on your back, it’s important the kit is comfortable. The Vermorels’ cushioned straps help minimise body stresses and strains so that you can spray in optimum safety.”

Armed with electric hand tools, Will is keen to see battery technology pulse through landscapers’ kit.

“Professional grade electric mowers, blowers and cutters are all available,” notes, “but no battery powered scarifiers and aerators have emerged yet.”

Will tailors turfcare to soil profiles and ground conditions. “They can be vastly different, even across a county,” he states. “North Norfolk soils are mostly sandy, while other areas are heavy clay.”

Gardens of new build properties can be tricky, he adds. “The soil can be unprepared and compacted by lorries working on site. Sometimes it’s better to star again from scratch rather than trying to improve a lawn struggling with poor conditions below.

Will visits regular clients five times a year on average, rotating solid and hollow tining and slitting, with sand dressing to help build higher quality soil over time.

“There are so many brilliant seed mixes available now that we can match supply to clients’ lawn types and are introducing more bent cultivars into what have been ryebased surfaces traditionally.”

Grass types is a particularly interesting aspect of turfcare for Will, who studied it on the Grounds Management Association’s Level 2 Technical Certificate in Turf Surface Maintenance.

Armed with a distinction in the qualification, Will is climbing the ladder of achievement in both professional and domestic turfcare. “I’m keen to further develop my turfcare knowledge and plan to complete more courses to fulfil that aim,” he states. One to watch.

PAVING SOLUTIONS THAT WON’T COST THE EARTH

In May 2021, CO2 levels reached 419 parts per million – the highest average ever recorded. “As a manufacturer, we know we have a responsibility to be as sustainable as possible. Sustainability and environmental impact has always been a high priority for us and I am delighted to announce that we have introduced further environmental initiatives, all with the aim of reducing our environmental impact.” Mark Shorrock, Managing Director at Instarmac.

“Having as little impact on the environment as possible is behind every decision I make about the running of our production facility. I am proud to say that we have introduced initiatives which include using variable speed drivers across the plant, consuming less electricity at start up, replacing lighting with LED bulbs and using Intelligent Wrapping Technology to select the best wrapping solution for each product, focusing on stability and efficiency.” Paul

The environmental improvements to UltraScape’s facilities do not end there. Instarmac installed 1,656 solar panels across a 3,771sqm area at their state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Tamworth. The 768KW solar panels will generate 680,000KW of clean green energy for Instarmac to use and is projected to save at least 36,000KW of power per month and 15 million KW over the lifespan of the system. This has saved over 642t of CO2 emissions since being commissioned.

UltraScape are helping their customers reduce their own carbon footprint with the introduction of environmentally friendly solutions. UltraScape eco-bed and flowpoint eco both deliver the performance expected of BS 7533 compliant paving installation materials, but contain 20% recycled material –vastly reducing the use of virgin aggregates.

What’s more, UltraScape premjoint and flowpoint fine are available in tubs made from 100% recycled

material, which can also be recycled – a huge step forward for UltraScape and the landscaping industry as a whole.

UltraScape’s paving installation materials are delivered to customers on their privately owned fleet which now includes two CNG lorries. The introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles will result in a reduction of CO2 emissions by 115 tonnes per truck, per year. UltraScape are fully committed to using fuel alternatives and aim to have 25% of their fleet running on CNG by the end of 2024, and 60% by the end of 2025.

Furthermore, in December 2022, UltraScape achieved their first year of Planet Mark Certification and have kick started their journey towards becoming a carbon neutral manufacturer.

TOBERMORE CROWNED ‘SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING BUSINESS OF THE YEAR’

Responsible paving and walling manufacturer, Tobermore, has been named ‘Sustainable Manufacturing Business of the Year’ at the Business Eye Sustainability Awards 2023.

The prestigious awards aim to recognise local businesses for their hard work and continued contribution to a more sustainable environment. The inaugural event organised by Business Eye, took place for the first time at the Culloden Estate & Spa in Belfast on Thursday evening.

Tobermore came out on top of a very tough category with finalists including big names like CocaCola HBC, Wrightbus and Collins Aerospace.

Tobermore use 100% of the energy produced from their renewable sources in their operations. The business owns a 250kW wind turbine and have over 1250 solar panels installed which produce 28,950.9 kWhr per annum. The company is currently supplied with 100% Green energy as verified by Power NI.

Tobermore have championed a few remarkable sustainability initiatives that really set them apart for the judges. In the last few months, the has established a collaborative cluster to transform excess livestock manure and grass silage into biomethane which can be used as fuel. For Tobermore, this could lead to decarbonised fuel for vehicles and lower carbon paving, walling and kerb products.

78 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine LANDSCAPING SERVICES

Last year, the responsible manufacturer released Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for their paving, walling and kerb products. EPDs provide their customers with comparable, objective and third-party verified environmental data.

Furthermore, Tobermore have begun planting over 44,000 trees in Northern Ireland. The initiative promises to have a positive environmental impact while supporting local biodiversity.

David Henderson, Managing Director and owner of Tobermore commented on the win: “Tobermore is delighted to be named Sustainable Manufacturing Business of the Year. Sustainability is a key strategic focus for our business and although we don’t do it for awards, it is wonderful to be recognised in this way. This accolade marks a key milestone in our sustainability journey and is a credit to our team and the sustainability ethos they have embedded.”

Business Eye judging panel chairman, Richard Buckley commented on Tobermore’s entry: “Tobermore’s was a stand-out entry in the highly competitive manufacturing category. In an industry with some significant environmental challenges, Tobermore has made huge strides towards embracing sustainability throughout both its manufacturing process as well as its organisation as a whole.”

LOCAL SCHOOLCHILDREN JOIN TOBERMORE TO PLANT TREES

The initiative kicked off on 9th February when Tobermore staff were joined by local schoolchildren to visit the site and commemorate the occasion. Eco-conscious pupils from Our Lady of Lourdes School and Garryduff Primary School came along to hear about the project, it’s goals and to join in with the tree planting.

David Henderson, Managing Director and owner of Tobermore commented: “Tobermore is delighted to be involved in this environmental project. Our partnership with the Scottish Woodlands coincides with our extensive decarbonisation programme. We are extremely passionate about protecting our environment and therefore sustainability is a key strategic focus for Tobermore.”

Brian Malcomson, Senior Forest Manager of Scottish Woodlands Ltd commented: “This woodland achieves several objectives all at once. The primary one is by contributing to offset carbon emissions generated by Tobermore, but also it will enhance biodiversity of the local area, enhance the landscape aesthetics of the area, provide a space for recreation and education and providing employment.’

Leading paving and walling manufacturer, Tobermore, has partnered with the Scottish Woodlands to plant over 44,000 trees in Northern Ireland. The initiative promises to have a positive environmental impact while supporting local biodiversity.

In line with their net zero targets, Tobermore has purchased a

site located on the outskirts of Ballymoney. In the coming weeks, the green field site will be transformed into a forest comprised of entirely native tree species including oak, crab apple and wild cherry. The woodland will be maintained for the next 5 years by the Scottish Woodlands and funded by DAERA through the Forest Expansion Scheme.

Earlier this month, Tobermore was shortlisted as finalists for the ‘Sustainable Manufacturing Business of the Year’ award at the Business Eye Sustainability Awards.

CHOOSE OTTERBINE FOR AERATION THAT IS A GRADE ABOVE THE REST

The name Otterbine and great water quality come hand in hand. For products that provide the perfect blend of style and functionality with stunning visual displays and superior oxygen transfer rates, there’s no need to look further than Reesink Hydro-Scapes.

According to The American Society of Civil Engineers, ‘Oxygen Transfer Rate’ (OTR) is the gold standard for the measure of how much oxygen an aeration system transfers and for why aeration is needed. It’s a scientific measure of an aerator’s capability to supply oxygen to water and a measure that proves just how capable aerators are.

Manufacturers serious about helping customers achieve a balanced ecosystem will provide OTR tests performed by an independent third party, and Otterbine’s are tested by the University of Minnesota and Gerry Shell Environmental Labs. The results are available online at otterbine.com.

Otterbine provides aerating fountains, industrial aerators and subsurface diffused air systems, suitable for any body of water of almost any depth.

Available in a variety of spray patterns from geysers to bouquets, Otterbine’s aerating fountains throw water droplets into the air, trapping oxygen molecules before falling back to the surface and releasing the ‘dissolved oxygen’ into the water. Otterbine’s High Volume surface spray aerator for example adds over 3lbs of oxygen to the water per horsepower hour regardless of depth.

Diffused aerators transfer oxygen by driving air down a tube where it’s released via a diffuser at the bottom of the basin. The air bubbles are slowly ‘absorbed’ by the water as they rise to the surface.

Diffused aeration can be seen, or rather not seen, with Otterbine’s subsurface diffused aerator system:

AirFlo 3. Performing completely below the water, it’s virtually invisible with no surface spray. Having no electrical components in the water makes this system perfect for recreational bodies of water and needs little to no maintenance with its corrosion resistant materials.

Otterbine aerators stand apart in their energy efficiency, delivering some of the lowest operating costs in the industry. Systems are on average 20 percent more efficient than competitors. Where on industry average, it takes 18 amps to run a 5 HP 230V single phase aerating fountain, Otterbine uses only 13.4 amps. Over a product’s lifespan, this can add up to a small fortune of savings.

Otterbine’s comprehensive warranties range from three to five years. reesinkturfcare.co.uk

MARANO INTEGRATED: THE NEW MODULAR FENCING RANGE FROM F.H. BRUNDLE

Marano Integrated is the latest addition to F.H. Brundle’s stylish aluminium fencing range.

This versatile system consists of boards, screens, posts and inserts that can provide either total privacy, or boards with 25mm gaps between them. Multiple spacers can also be used to create larger spaces between boards.

In common with the broader Marano range, Marano Integrated is long-lasting, requires extremely little maintenance, and is therefore highly cost-effective.

The system’s posts have been specially designed for Marano Integrated, measuring 80 x 80mm, with a narrow 20.6mm slot on two sides, and an extra wide slot on the third side. The post can be used as an intermediate, corner, end and T-post by adding or removing extrusions.

The Marano Integrated infill range consists of four hollow sections – one 55mm section (Half Round system), a 50mm rectangular section (Parallel 50 system), a 100mm rectangular section (Parallel 100 system), and one that features a tongue and groove (Connect 150 system).

But perhaps the range’s most notable feature is its decorative screens, made of lasered aluminium sheeting.

These attractive additions can be incorporated in several ways. The full height 1825mm screens, measuring 300 or 1000mm wide, can be used in conjunction with the Half Round, Parallel 50, Parallel 100 and Connect 150 systems, and be installed either horizontally or vertically. Alternatively, you could build a fence using only the screens.

The boards are available in four contemporary colours - basalt grey, pebble grey, beige grey and black sand. Mill finish is also available, allowing you to powder coat to any RAL colour.

Lightweight and easy to fit, the design possibilities are endless with this truly versatile system.

SIMON GUDGEON OUTDOOR SCULPTURE

Choosing sculpture

The choice of a sculpture is a deeply personal one and should be led by the innate response of the viewer to a piece. Simon’s ideas take months, even years, to form in his mind, so he never takes commissions – believing that the work of an artist creating what they want will always be far superior to something they’re paid to produce.

An incredible piece of art has the power to transform a space, be that a public park, a home, or, perhaps especially, a garden.

Sculpture enhances the environment in a different way to planting. More than just a focal point or an element of interest, a wellchosen, well-placed piece can invoke a mood, and alter the energy and experience. It can inspire emotion, spark contemplation and reflection, and crucially add beauty.

Simon Gudgeon, one of Britain’s leading contemporary sculptors, has won international acclaim for creating sculptures which do just that. With their signature smooth style, his pared-back, elegant forms are favoured by Royalty and rock stars alike, and his work is soughtafter by private collectors and displayed in high-profile public spaces around the world.

Having grown up on his family farm in the Yorkshire countryside, nature has always been a source of inspiration for Simon. He has often favoured the shape, form and movement of birds, but his work spans styles - from figurative to abstract to kinetic, and varies in scale from gallery pieces to monumental works.

Simon’s giant abstract bird sculptures are particularly well known. His 3m-tall bronze ‘Isis’, for example, was the first sculpture to be installed in London’s Hyde Park in 50 years, while another casting is at America’s National Museum of Wildlife Art in Wyoming. Two of his sculptures feature outside the Cirque du Soleil International Headquarters in Montreal, Canada, and three are installed at London’s most exclusive and luxurious address - One Hyde Park.

What unites Simon’s work, and is embodied in every piece, is his core belief that sculpture must above all else be a thing of beauty; it must uplift the spirit and enhance its surroundings. On a deeper level it must connect with the viewer, stirring their senses and appealing to their emotions in a visceral way. This is the nature of Simon’s work.

And, rather than a gallery or museum, Simon believes it is important to experience large and monumental sculptures in a setting where they are at scale with their surroundings, and their power is undiminished. For the past decade he has developed an extraordinary 26-acre sculpture park at his Dorset home, where a collection of his work can be viewed and is available to purchase. Here, under the open skies, viewers and potential buyers can appreciate the unique character of outdoor sculpture as an ever-changing event, both transforming the landscape, and part of it - altering with the seasons, the weather, the time of day, the differing light, and the passage of time.

Sculptures are not the only nonorganic element to enhance a garden. Drawing inspiration from Sculpture by the Lakes, Simon has also developed Studio Gudgeon. This is a range of functional artwork, including benches and hanging seats, fire bowls, gates and fencing, designed to elevate private garden spaces in the same way as Simon has his sculpture park, turning Sculpture by the Lakes into a work of art in its own right. It is the perfect place to appreciate how sculptural forms can enhance the landscape, and an ideal source of inspiration for anyone looking to transform a garden or any outdoor space.

REVAMP YOUR LANDSCAPING OPERATIONS WITH RE-FLOW FIELD MANAGEMENT

Re-flow is an award-winning field management solution that puts operatives to work and field managers in control. Adopted by hundreds of businesses across the country, including landscaping innovators such as Tony Benger Landscaping, Taylor Made Landscapes and Shines Environmental, companies use Reflow to streamline their operational processes and find sustainable growth.

Landscaping businesses commonly find that their growth quickly outstrips manual systems that are held back by siloed, legacy systems, a lack of centralised communication and human error. Re-flow, however, is a digital platform of tools that is able to manage all major operational processes in the field – centralised and fully integrated. The desktop dashboard includes numerous powerful features such as detailed job pack creation and smart scheduling that accounts for double bookings, availability and even advanced aspects such as operative fatigue.

Operatives can interact with this information through the user-friendly mobile app. Job information is synchronised and available to view, both online and offline. This can include PDFs, drawings, GPS locations and vehicles or equipment assigned to the task through the system’s asset management functionalities.

All this information can also be used by operatives when completing digital forms. Dashboard users can assign these from a catalogue of over 40 common, pre-built forms such as risk assessments, equipment safety checks and site visit records, or build their own from scratch using our powerful block-based form builder. All to regulatory standards. Once received, sites can remain compliant with enforced completion processes, drop-down fields and the ability to take, annotate and attach photos directly through the app. Submitted forms are then tagged with a unique digital signature, as well as time and location tagging, enabling more robust auditability and improved HSE oversight.

These crucial features only scratch the surface of Re-flow’s capabilities. The constantly growing set of powerful features now includes team communication, live user tracking, reporting, quotes, billing, invoicing and more. What’s more, the software boasts a built-in REST API that allows larger businesses to seamlessly integrate the software as part of a larger ERP and further enhance it with hundreds of custom automation rulesets, that further eliminate human error and streamline operation processes.

Numerous landscaping businesses have transformed their operations with Re-flow, allowing them to remain future-proof, tender bigger contracts, streamline their processes and grow sustainably.

GARDEN LIGHTING THAT WORKS

Since 1985 Kingson Electrical have been undertaking electrical work. The last 25 years have seen them develop and finesse their @gardenelectrician brand and installation techniques. Building on David’s (Managing Director) love of being outside has seen Kingson Electrical take on bigger and more complicated projects requiring our electrical installations to be of the highest quality.

Over the years we have experienced many electricians that struggle to install garden lighting. Furthermore, they often aggravate the landscaper and or client by not delivering on their promises due to their lack of experience in the gardens.

Our garden electricians have the required skill set, wealth of experience and attitude to reduce these frustrations, making the

electrical installation clear and straightforward. We use the best products on the market to deliver an installation that is robust enough to work in all weathers.

Our team understand:

• The lighting needs to be flexible to meet the needs of the garden as it grows.

• How to create a dynamic look using the light and then darkness created around it.

• How to highlight and enhance the gardens features. How to design an electrical system that works. It will not cause nuisance tripping to the client’s critical appliances like fridge or freezers. It is installed in a manner that keeps the water out but is flexible enough for the future. You need to understand the client’s brief and find out how they use their garden. Parties,

wildlife, sitting with a book and having a chill. These all lead the garden lighting design.

• You need to minimise glare from the LED lamps using glare guards and louvres.

• That great care must be taken with lawns, planting and patios not to damage them.

If you’re looking to have lighting or electrical work done in your garden Kingson Electrical can deliver the garden of your dreams. With our extensive experience we install, ‘Garden lighting that works.’

BUILDING VIBRANT LOCAL ECONOMIES

The regeneration of the Jarnac Court, Dalkeith, aimed to revitalise the town centre. New dynamic Contrast architectural floodlights from Thorn Lighting, have helped modernise the 1960s urban square and allow Midlothian Council to use colour to celebrate festivities.

Wayne Clarke, Operations and Asset Manager at Midlothian Council, explains, “Jarnac Court was highlighted as an area for development under our economic development masterplan. The strategy was to create better usable spaces for people. We wanted an inviting area that would encourage the use of the space for events and gatherings such as nighttime markets. The lighting was a key part of the strategy; we also installed power sources to power these events.”

The chosen lighting solution was an arrangement of three Thorn Contrast RGBW DMX architectural floodlights with asymmetric optics on six bespoke aluminium columns. Positioned throughout the square, the floodlights are controlled by an Amaze Controller, creating a vibrant urban space that the council can set to a specific colour to support local and national events.

For example, if they were to host a Germanstyle night time market at Christmas, they could program dynamic or static light scenes controlled via DMX RDM.

This makes it easy to transform the appearance of the square at night with a splash of Bavarian colour.

Wayne concludes, “The lighting installation has certainly provided the desired outcome. The finished effect is getting Jarnac Court more recognised as an events venue, helping us build vibrant local economies. Furthermore, the Contrast arrangements not only illuminate the area but have become a distinctive architectural element of the urban environment.”

NEW SAW CHAIN FOR ENHANCED CUTTING PERFORMANCE

STIHL has launched a new innovative full chisel saw chain offering up to 20% higher cutting performance.

Compatible with any STIHL professional chainsaw with a power output of 1.6 kW – 2.0 kW, the new PS3 Pro chain is available in 3/8 P pitch and 1.1mm drive link gauge and features a narrow kerf designed to reduce resistance while cutting.

This new geometry results in a chain that not only cuts faster than the previous 1.3mm gauge chain but is less sensitive to pressure too. For cordless chainsaw models, the increase in cutting efficiency also allows more cuts to be made per charge, improving productivity.

The new 1.1mm Light 04 guide bar has been specifically designed for use with the PS3 Pro chain, offering increased durability and optimum balance. In addition, the drive links on the PS3 Pro sit deeper inside the Light 04 guide bar compared to ¼ P 1.1mm chain, further decreasing the likelihood of the chain de-railing.

Available in 12” and 14” lengths, the PS3 Pro chain and Light 04 guide bar comes as standard with the

new MSA 220 C-B, or separately as an easy upgrade for models such as the MSA 220 T and MS 201 TC-M. Furthermore, the PS3 Pro is compatible with all standard 3/8 P sharpening accessories.

STIGA LAUNCH MARCH 1STBRINGING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO BRITISH GARDENS

Early March will see the dawn of a new innovative mowing age with STIGA’s new autonomous robotic lawnmowers. At the heart of these machines is the ease of use, benefits both to lawns and nature, and the energy efficiency of the design.

The three fully autonomous, CABLE FREE, robot mowers, the first to bring predictive AGS technology to the garden, are:

A 1500

• A 3000

• A 500

AGS RTK GPS using cloud based 4G signals

The patented STIGA Active Guidance System (AGS) enhances the GPS RTK signal reliability by

using 4G to transmit the vital course correction data. This means the link between the robot and base remains reliable, no matter what obstacles or distance lies between the base and the robot. The system learns satellite blind spots throughout the garden at various times of the day, ensuring that the robot has an unbroken link to the infrastructure that allows it to navigate with the high accuracy required.

No-Cable

With no need to lay cable in your lawn, you can simply use the App to drive the robot mower around the perimeter of your lawn and any obstacles within it. You do it once and it remembers every detail. Because it is virtual, it is hassle-free

to adjust if the layout of the garden should change should you add a pond, bush, or garden furniture.

Caring for the lawn

By using accurate navigation, the robot can cover the lawn significantly more efficiently. This means less cutting time when compared to a random navigation robot. Less cutting time allows the plant time to heal between cutting schedules. This way the grass stays healthier.

The carbon steel pivoting razor blades are strong and flexible, making them safer and more resistant to impact and resulting in them staying sharper, for longer. Spinning at 2850rpm they will

102 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine TOOLS, PLANT & EQUIPMENT

perform a neat cut without tearing the grass. The height of the cut can be adjusted between 20 and 65mm and can be controlled remotely via the smartphone app, STIGA.GO. This means you have complete control of your robot, even when away from home.

Caring for nature

By designing high-efficiency robots that are able to manage cutting session during daylight hours, STIGA has ensured that nocturnal animals such as hedgehogs can safely occupy the garden overnight.

Energy efficiency

At the heart of every STIGA robot mower is an ePower battery built on premium lithium-ion batteries,

which contain chemistry optimised for reliability and durability. The new STIGA robots optimise battery usage as they work within organised cutting patterns ensuring that there is no chance of over-mowing. But don’t worry, there is also the option to programme the mower to create straight-line patterns so you can still enjoy quintessential British stripes if you wish!

They cut the lawn in two mowing cycles - these are performed consequently. It will re-start any cutting cycle from where it stopped on the previous cycle and can be programmed to work in multiple mowing zones, always returning to the charging station by the fastest route.

The new STIGA robot range combines cutting-edge technology with function-led design engineering to offer a robot mower that offers cutting perfection, with total flexibility and control like no other.

Official launch is 1st March 2023 and the robots will be available to purchase from authorised robot dealers and the STIGA website.

ABA GROUNDCARE CONTINUES TO EXPAND

ABA Groundcare based in the South West of England have expanded once again with another new depot opened recently on Woodward Road, Tiverton.

Following the closure of MST, former Devon Agricultural dealership, in 2022 due to cash flow issues, Jamie Hutchings, the owner of ABA Groundcare seized the opportunity to expand his business and opened up a branch in Tiverton.

Jamie Hutchings said: “We established the business in 2014 in Dorchester. We built up in that region and then looked to expand. I got to know Scott Struthers from MST and dealt and traded with him regularly. I offered him a job many times, but he always said no. Then we heard what was happening with MST and stepped in and offered five former members of the staff

including Scott, a job at our new premises in Tiverton, totalling over 200 years experience.”

He said that employing skilled staff was an issue in every trade, and he was thankful that he could find five skilled new members willing to carry on working together.

“It was an easy decision to make,” he said. “They wanted to stay together working and very quickly decided they were happy to join my company.”

The Tiverton branch offers servicing and parts, supply garden machinery, agricultural vehicles, and quad bikes from the likes of Stihl, Yamaha, Husqvarna and Stiga to name a few, alongside the specialist ISEKI ground care unit.

“We are continuing to offer a service

which customers of MST now miss here in Tiverton,” Jamie said. “It’s also a great central location as you can get anywhere reasonably quickly in Devon from here.

“It’s a service-led business, but we sell as well,” Jamie explained. “We are here to look out for our customers; any sales are a bonus. Scott Struthers, previous sales rep for MST, has built up excellent relationships with customers in the area, it is great to have him on board to continue offering the same service.”

“I come from an engineer’s background, so every product we sell has been chosen because it’s a good quality product, easy to work on and reliable. It’s not just about selling product; it’s about selling decent products, and that’s why we partnered with ISEKI because there’s nothing better.”

106 www.landud.co.uk Follow us @ludmagazine TOOLS, PLANT & EQUIPMENT

On running the business during the pandemic and cost of living crisis, he added: “The ground care business hasn’t been too badly affected, other than the supply of goods.

“People still need the machinery; they still want to be in their gardens, so other than the cost of everything going up, we’re in a fairly strong place.

“If customers are not buying from you, they’re going to want what they’ve got repaired and serviced. I don’t think we will see too much problem, but we will try and keep the costs down and try and weather the storm.”

Commenting on the change Scott Struthers said: “it’s the best outcome for me and my customers, I have

built up such good relationships with so many in the Devon area and to be able to continue to build on this with such good support and service from ABA Groundcare is the ideal outcome for me.”

David Withers, managing director of ISEKI, added: “It’s exciting for us. We’ve been trading with Jamie, ABA Groundcare for many years and have a great relationship, which makes it easier. We know Jamie; we know he is really customer focused and dedicated to the service side of the business, which is what customers really want.

“As well as that, you’ve got a group of people who we would’ve lost all of that industry knowledge if Jamie hadn’t stepped in to do what he’s done. It’s great for the customers in

the area who will get great backup support, and we’ll get more exposure going forward. It’s excellent for Jamie to be able to expand his business.

“It’s a win for Jamie, a win for us as a manufacturer and great for the staff there who could have ended up without roles or having to do something that they’re not experienced in, it would have been a shame to have lost that.”

Andrew Parr, a former MST staff member, now working at ABA Groundcare, said: “I worked for MST from the year dot, with almost 40 years of employment. It was such a shock when MST announced it was closing. It was a great shock to everybody because MST has been a part of Tiverton for many years. The old depot was built in 1962 and started as Twose in Halberton.

“I saw a lot of changes over the years, and now it’s just lovely to continue providing a service in Tiverton with our customers, working with five former MST staff, and being around familiar faces.

“Jamie is a good boss, he is driven, and we have the backing of ISEKI, which is a great product.”

Another former MST staff member, Sue Westlake, is now ABA Groundcare’s officer administrator. She said: “Having been made redundant at MST, we were lucky enough to know Jamie, who was looking for new staff, so it fitted in nicely with us.

“The end of MST happened very quickly, although it didn’t surprise me. In a way, it was a relief that it happened, but sad. I worked for MST for over 40 years, so seeing what was happening was a shock.

“It’s lovely to be able to come and work here now. We have a great camaraderie, and we look forward to doing well here and the company succeeding.” www.iseki.co.uk

PREVENT SLIPPING

Old railway sleeper have been used on golf courses from the 1930’s and provide an ideal material for many situations whilst maintaining a natural feel in the landscape. Many golf course today use them either in bunkers or grassy hollows or more often than not to provide stepped access to elevated or steep sided tees. The advance of soft spikes and moulded sole golf shoes away from traditional steel spikes has led to an increase of slips on wooden steps and in the early 2000’s this was becoming an increasing problem.

Having searched for many years and looked at various ideas at other golf clubs, including carpet, astro, chicken wire, tar and chips and chainsaw cut grooves, all in their various ways trying to eliminate the slip issue and presenting you with a trip issue or a higher than expected replacement schedule on wooden sleeper steps, a chance advertisement in a trade magazine highlighted a new product called GripClad. That was back in 2006? And it was decided to obtain some samples and look at the benefits of the product more closely. Following that initial assessment a trial set of steps were chosen and the product installed. Installation was easy and straight forward, GripClad arrived in pre-cut lengths and to the dimensions that has been specified, only holes had to be drilled and the cleats screwed down with a mastic to act as a cushioning agent.

A set of steps could be easily completed in a couple of hours and a large set in a day, much quicker than some of the other products mentioned above. In addition if a sleeper had to be replaced it was simply a case of unscrewing the cleat and replacing it onto a new sleeper.

Since that first installation we have purchased GripClad every year to complete all of our wooden surfaces around the course, which includes 10 sets of very large sleeper step installations, 4 sets of sleeper rails around teeing areas and ancillary surfaces including service and mobility ramps etc around the Clubhouse.

The performance of the product has been outstanding, not only did it cope with the wear and tear of traffic, it performs in all weathers and has not deteriorated in the 10 years that the initial batch has been down, it still looks as good now as it did 10 years ago. We will continue to use it around the golf course as it provide the most cost effective solution both time and longevity. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this product out on the golf course or around the Clubhouse.
