Landscape Show

Exhibitors LANDSCAPE exhibitors include manufacturers and suppliers of everything from vases, pots and flag stones to furniture and conservatories, water features and sundials. Our exhibitors provide architectural iron work, planters, sheds and turf; they supply sculpture, soil, plants and paving as well as lighting, heating, trees and tools. LANDSCAPE Youth Conference The Youth Conference will start at 11am and finish at 1pm. Our collective aim is to get 10 different speakers talking for 10 minutes each, with differing viewpoints and job skills, who will talk to the students about how they got started and why they chose their respective paths. There will be additional input from Trade Associations on career paths available and study options.

A short list will be selected by our speakers, media partners and trade associations which will then be voted for by the visitors themselves. The winner will be announced on the afternoon of the last day of the show. This is a great extra promotional opportunity for the finalists. Visitors Our international visitors to the show include Landscape Designers & Contractors, Architects, Facilities Managers, Groundsmen & Parks Officers, Event Florists, Creative Directors, Garden Centres, Contract Gardeners, Hotels and Interior Designers. Bird House Competition As part of the continuing initiative to engage and enthuse young people with the world of horticulture and landscaping the LANDSCAPE Show are launching a new competition to all schools.

Best in Show This year all exhibitors get the chance to submit a product to be rated ‘Best In Show’.

6

Landscape & Urban Design Issue 20

With the aim of generating conversations covering environmental and ecology issues the competition will hopefully enable students to talk about birds, their habitats and their needs.

The hope is that conversations will be had about the local environment, the need to provide for wildlife in our future plans and what they bring to us on a wider scale. Entries will be on display at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show, with the winning entries receiving an exclusive visit from Anne-Marie Powell. Job Fair As part of the new LANDSCAPE Youth Initiative Programme, this year’s LANDSCAPE Show will see the start of a new Job Fair. Aimed specifically at 18-25 year olds who are looking for employment within the industry, the Job Fair provides a free opportunity for employers to meet face to face with potential job candidates who are already focused and skilled. Iberville International maritime Terminal and alexandra Pier Last April 25, the Montreal Port Authority (MPA) officially unveiled its plans for the restoration of Alexandra Pier and the Iberville International Passenger Terminal.

T

he project is designed by the firm Provencher_ Roy, which once again distinguishes itself by its ability to implement, in the Montréal area, projects that constitute a focus for further development. At a time when the creation of public spaces is increasingly important, the firm has worked closely with the MPA to not only deliver a totally renovated maritime terminal that has been upgraded to meet the current operational needs of cruise lines, of which a growing number are

choosing Montréal as a tourist destination, but also to better integrate the pier and the maritime terminal into the urban fabric of Old Montréal and to satisfy citizens' wishes for greater access to the waterfront. “This is a structuring project for the tourism industry, as well as for residents and visitors of Old Montréal, who will benefit from the revitalization of the Alexandra Pier facilities,” says Claude Provencher, architect and senior partner

18 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 20

Background Alexandra Pier's history spans over a century. In the early 20th century, the site integrated several port activities, including the reception of immigrants and travellers and the transshipment of cargo, as well as facilities that made Montréal the world's largest cereal port. Measuring 305 metres long by 91 metres wide, the pier originally housed four huge, two-storey hangars. In 1967, the Iberville terminal was used exclusively for receiving cruise passengers and

circulation on the site was limited to taxis, buses and cars, a situation exacerbated when the hangars were converted into parking lots. It was not particularly suited to pedestrian circulation. Today, despite significant investments for their maintenance over the past 10 years, these infrastructures, located in the heart of Old Montréal, show advanced signs of aging and operational obsolescence that are compromising their ability to keep providing the services expected of them.

Pier

We wanted to create a space that emphasizes the historical richness of the site while also providing a park, a place to relax, and a space that people could make their own,” adds Sonia Gagné, architect and partner at Provencher_Roy.

M

aritime terminal The maritime terminal,

completely redesigned, will be moved to the entrance of Alexandra Pier, bringing passengers closer to the Old Port and its shops. Furthermore, the terminal will now welcome passengers at ground level in order to facilitate embarking and disembarking and the processing of luggage. Also, continuous-loop lanes for vehicles will improve traffic flow and simplify access to the port facilities and parking spaces. A reserved pedestrian pathway will

Signature tower One of the project's more innovative features is the addition of a tower whose primary function will be to convey and embody Alexandra Pier's maritime vocation. Like a lighthouse, it will constitute the first means by which ships and passengers will discern the port; for Montrealers, it will signal the location of the river. Thanks to several elevated viewing platforms, the tower will offer a unique vantage point for observing the city and river, and enable visitors to discover the city upon arrival in

the port. It will also serve as a transitional element connecting the raised esplanade, the maritime terminal, and the new park at the tip of Alexandra Pier. The architectural vocabulary developed for the tower and its structure evokes the port's rich industrial heritage. “After having been one of the leading forces in the founding of Montréal, the Port of Montreal proudly continues this contribution with Provencher_Roy by providing the city modern and inviting maritime facilities for cruise passengers and residents. These improved facilities will meet client needs and give Montrealers a renewed access to our majestic Saint Lawrence River to mark Montréal's 375th anniversary in 2017,” concludes MPA President and CEO Sylvie Vachon.

be integrated, significantly improving access to the site as well. Public promenade A major new development: Montrealers will have access to a landscaped esplanade located on the roof of the maritime terminal. This pedestrian path will represent a sizeable addition to the Old Port's network of public spaces and help forge stronger ties between the Saint Lawrence River, the terminal and the urban fabric. “From the project's outset, our aim was to extend the Old Port's linear park onto the pier. Bringing the inside out With a 3.5% growth in 2015, the market for garden buildings and structures is set for a 2% to 4% annual growth, according to a recent report by AMA Research .

As the trend for creating outside living space increases, Crown Pavilions, supplier of buildings to household names such as Duncan Bannatyne, Gloria Hunniford and Alan Titchmarsh, enables its customers to enjoy their gardens come rain or shine. Gytis Stelmokas, Purchasing & Marketing Manager at Crown Pavilions, explains: “We’re seeing a huge increase in demand for fireplaces, underfloor

Crown Pavilions heating, and hi-tech doubleglazing as customers seek to make use of their outdoor space whatever the weather.” Crown Pavilions is where discerning homeowners as well as landscape designers, architects and property developers go for beautifully designed luxury garden buildings. Indeed, a bespoke Crown Pavilions’ structure will form the centrepiece for a ground-breaking RHS garden this year at Hampton Court, while another takes centre stage at a special holiday project in Hampshire catering for military service personnel and their families. The company has a range of structures within its collection as well as offering customers a bespoke service. “Home cinemas, pool houses and bars are becoming increasingly popular”, elaborates Gytis. All Crown Pavilions garden buildings are designed and built to order in the company’s Oxfordshire workshop and installed on site. Constructed in steel, the

framework offers a sturdy basis upon which to build using the finest Scandinavian wood and Canadian red cedar. Business going through the roof Prices for garden buildings start at £20,000, while a gazebo starts at £7,000, including delivery and installation. The company

fulfils around 600 to 700 installations per year. “2015 was a good year for us, we sold 600 units and expect to increase that significantly this year”, says Gytis. With a turnover of £7m and growth of 30% yearon-year, Crown Pavilions began seeing revenues rise just before the recession and accelerated growth throughout the downturn.

Furthermore, the company forecasts that turnover will almost triple to £20m within the next 3 to 5 years. Return on investment on outside space While residential projects have been the mainstay of Crown Pavilions’ business, accounting for around 95% of orders to date, commercial contracts are

Crown Pavilions

the latest growth driver with businesses, such as hotels, restaurants, spas, pubs, cafes, indeed the whole of the hospitality sector, seeking to turn outside space into areas that deliver return on investment. As Gytis points out, “it’s not just homeowners that are looking to maximise space and make use of their gardens all year round”. The crowning glory Crown Pavilions structures feature either a flat or pitched roof. Its flat roof structures are finished in EPDM rubber, while pitched roofs on bespoke garden buildings are finished in Canadian Cedar shingle finish. Gazebos feature either natural thatch or Canadian Cedar shingle roofs. All construction materials for its pitched roof builds are purchased via Roofing Superstore. The online merchant is the sole supplier for the company’s lead, waterproof membranes

24 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 20

and finishings, as well as supplying bespoke guttering. Saving 30% with Roofing Superstore Gytis explains that the company have made huge savings with Roofing Superstore as the exclusive supplier for roofing for its pitched roof garden buildings. While the company tends to place smaller monthly orders during its quieter months (October to February), larger orders are placed during the busier summer season (March to end of October). Dedicated to securing the most advantageous supplier agreements, Gytis explains: “We get good trade discounts with Roofing Superstore. When buying in volume we are able to save up to 30%, hence why we placed 5 very large orders in 2015.”

More than cost savings As one of the largest online merchants, Roofing Superstore stocks over 29,000 products from the world’s leading suppliers without the restricted stock levels often found in stores. Gytis explains what this means for Crown Pavilions: “With access to a wide range of stock, we can get everything we need to build our pitched roof structures, including membranes and fixtures and fittings. As such, the site really is a one stop shop for us.” Because Roofing Superstore adopts a drop-ship delivery model, Crown Pavilions also benefits from speed of delivery. “Products are delivered in 2 to 5 days and most often reach us within 3 days direct from supplier. With quick delivery guaranteed, we’ve been able to take on unexpected orders from the many trade shows we attend as well as meeting customer requests to bring

installation dates forward on existing orders”, reveals Stelmokas. Before working with Roofing Superstore, Gytis recalls that Crown Pavilions invested a great deal of time and resources dealing with up to 5 different suppliers at any one time to meet all of the company’s roofing needs. “We’re no longer wasting time sourcing and maintaining relationships with multiple suppliers. Now, any one of my colleagues can order online with ease, with everything we need only a few clicks away”, he explains. “I would definitely recommend Roofing Superstore to other construction companies looking for a convenient shopping experience that saves both time and money and offers the greatest choice in construction materials.” www.crownpavilions.co.uk

“British Summer Time Is Here, It’s Time To Oxygenate,” Advises Otterbine

Ensure clear waters with Otterbine’s range of aeration systems.

With a warm British Summer Time in full swing, water management specialist Otterbine is advising greenkeepers to aerate water hazards now, before oxygen depletion or stress situations occur.

“Waiting until symptoms of poor water quality appear before implementing good water management could be detrimental to both the environment and greenkeepers’ budgets,” he warns.

Maintaining high water quality is an essential part of successful golf course management all year round, but, as greenkeepers will know, both the light and heat generated by the spring/summer sun can quickly lead to severe problems in lakes and ponds.

“These unwanted symptoms impact on the golfer’s experience and the golf club’s reputation, and may also require costly fixative programmes. Once a lake has lost its ecological balance, it goes into crisis, at which point the cost of restoring it dramatically rises. As well as often being more expensive to implement, reactive solutions tend to be less friendly to the environment too,” Robert explains.

The resultant warmer water and excess nutrients, combined with low oxygen levels and minimal circulation, prematurely ages water and throws the natural ecosystem out of balance. This can lead to algae, aquatic weeds and odours, as well as sludge build up and even dead fish. In order to avoid this, a proper water management system should be put in place as soon as possible. Robert Jackson, Irrigation Manager at Lely Turfcare, Otterbine’s UK distributor, explains why it’s vital to act now rather than later.

26 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 20

To prevent or eliminate stagnant water in a pond or lake, the most natural water quality management solution is to introduce aeration; which is where Otterbine’s aeration systems can help. With solutions suitable for small ponds to vast lakes, Otterbine’s wide range of aeration systems comprise aerating fountains, industrial aerators and diffused air systems. Each has unique features that work to increase oxygen levels and circulate oxygen rich water, keeping water

quality high, and inhibiting algae, aquatic weeds and odours. For more information on Otterbine aerators and aerating fountains, contact distributor Lely Turfcare on 01480 226948, email otterbine.uk@lely.com or visit www.otterbine.com.

e currently live in a country where there are more pensioners than under 16’s in our population. This has led to the increase of the ‘granny annexe’ as people look for an alternative to care homes or assisted living. This is where The Hideout House Company and Superglamp come in, by providing a solution that allows both parties the privacy and independence they both want without the associated costs that traditional options bring with them.

The rise in house prices has also given birth to the ‘boomerang generation’ and left first time buyers struggling to get on the property ladder. With Superglamp, families have the option of creating more much needed space in their own garden that can be used as anything from an extra guest bedroom, a study, a children’s sleepover den or somewhere for the children to live before moving out of the family home.

RHS Garden Harlow Carr Hosts First Flower Show

R

HS Garden Harlow Carr held host its first flower show. The three-day floral extravaganza was in the stunning surroundings of the most northerly of the RHS gardens. More than 30 specialist nurseries and garden trade stands were dotted throughout the 58-acre garden. Visitors could browse, buy, and pick up advice from the very

best in the business. A wealth of beautiful herbaceous perennials and summer bedding plants were on display throughout the long summer weekend - from alliums, agapanthus and alpines to hostas, hydrangea and heuchera - making it a perfect opportunity to pick up something special for the garden. A selection of garden sundries will also be available to buy including fair trade plant pots, accessories and hand-crafted garden furniture.

Flower Show visitors also enjoyed a packed programme of expert talks and demonstrations hosted by Martin Fish, well-known garden writer and broadcaster, former Harrogate Flower Show director – and Harlow Carr’s new Garden Advisor.

Live music from a harpist, brass ensemble and string quartet was the perfect accompaniment to the show and there was plenty of opportunities to recharge the batteries with a cup of tea and a cake at Bettys Café Tea Rooms or Bettys Tea House in the heart of the garden.

Highlights included flower arranging demonstrations by BBC2's The Big Allotment Challenge judge and awardwinning floral designer, Jonathan Moseley, question and answer sessions with members of the RHS Garden Advice Service and talks by a selection of nurseries.

The new RHS Garden Harlow Carr Flower Show was the highlight of the garden’s yearly programme of events which already includes spring festivals, craft exhibitions and plant fairs. www.rhs.org.uk/ harlowcarrwhatson

Costings: £1.9m, forming part of the £22m regeneration of the university to link the campus north and south sides.

Teesside University’s vision has sought to unify its Middlesbrough campus by creating an inspiring and coherent cosmopolitan space for students and the public, forged by pedestrianising a section of the Southfield Road designated highway and introducing signature granite and steel hard landscaping elements within a well-lit, safe, environment. The Landscape and Earthworks division of Cleveland Land Services (CLS) worked within the wider project of regenerating the campus and linking north and south sides to foster a more welcoming, pedestrian-friendly space. Overlooking the transformed central space is The Curve, the university’s new administrative hub, erected by main contractor BAM, which delivers a dazzling addition to what is an innovative built realm. The bulk of the landscaping works was directed by the specification provided by landscape architects Austin-Smith: Lord, including sourcing materials. Michel Racine - Garden historian, landscape designer, urban planner and architect, writer, author of numerous works about garden history and art. Director of the “département de formation continue” at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure du Paysage of Versailles.

T

here’s something new yet eternal in how Christian Préaud conceives and creates a garden. It comes down to his journey which is reminiscent of garden designers who manage to draw on the skills they have gained over the course of life experiences. At’s why I’m convinced that Christian Préaud uses his insight as a landscaper, architect, painter and gardener to bring together the expertise and knowledge of a 21st century landscape architect.

50 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 20

Yet, if you look at some successful references, you cannot think of a Tuscan Renaissance garden without its villa, a Baroque garden in Ilede-France without its country retreat or Gertrude Jekyll’s cottage garden without its connection to her friend Edwin Lutyens’ architecture. And vice versa. Christian is among those who have unders- tood that the garden, architecture and graphic arts must be conceived in synergy like a happy space. A professional and a friend. A rare bird nowadays.

transition must be created between the end of the garden, the stretch of the lake and the sky reflected into it, to marry the land to the water, to unite the garden and it’s environment. Both screen and transparency are aligned with the strong lines and to the beautiful horizontal landscape on the other bank, to create an intimate walk by the water. Mounds of pebbles from the Rhone create an undulating terrain on which giant grasses grow in two sizes: the shorter, more dense and opaque, forming a cushion to the taller ones, light and translucent. These grasses remain all winter, dry, forming a reed catching frost spray from the lake.

A garden on the banks of the Geneva Lake. A space to be connected with the powerful elements of the great surrounding landscape.

Several meter thick boxwood ‘tables’ include in their center a large swath of lavender and create a frame in which the pool is set. A “window” in the boxwood in the lake’s direction , and an other “table” arranged in the slope of the land allows the eye of the swimmer to be taken directly from the pool water to the lake, stealing from his view the part of the garden between the two.

An olive tree finds its place among the lavender and makes a vertical transition in the foreground of the hundredyear-old oak grove at the foot of which lies a sea of white daffodils and hydrangeas ‘Annabelle’.

A swimming-pool «lost» in the middle of a vast lawn to be turned into a comfortable looking space and an intimate area. Landscape & Urban Design Issue 20

t is surrounded by high walls which shelter it from the desert’s arid wind. The water that springs to the surface is trapped and channelled, running into multiple rivulets watering the beds. The water bursts from fountains whose babbling brightens and freshens the setting. You can wander amid the flowers and delve deep into the groves to taste many fabulous fruits. The most beautiful birds have made it their home. Every hour of the day and night exudes a parade of subtle scents and fragrances. You can sit in the leafy lounges to play music and read poetry. Spiritual communion with tamed nature instils tranquillity and peace conducive to elevating the spirit, heart and soul. The Persians aspired to its peace and refinement more than anything. They called it paradise. To find comfortable and flattering spaces to open the garden on the horizon, the principle of terracing was imposed, not in the shape of successive steps, but irregular and rounded like lines of the coast. Dry stone walls remind us of the coastline and create sheltered terraces. Tall grasses come as a translucent screen in front of the sea view in which greenery “windows” organize the view of the surrounding islands and the Cap Frehel.

The encounter with space is primarly intuitive ...

A blue and white garden composed almost entirely of Mediterranean vegetation, benefits from the pleasures of the Gulf Stream and sea air. The style of the garden may have significantly evolved alongside civilizations, cultures and climates but its functions and the aspirations it achieves have barely changed.

”It is what I do that teaches me what I seek.” Pierre Soulages

A garden designed to highlight the pure and contemporary architecture of this magnificent villa, located on the south bank of the Geneva lake.

The large sloping lawn hit a high hedge of Eleagnus which hid the view of this seaside garden.

The expert transcription of nature and the idealized portrayal of the world and the universe is the ultimate exercise in which the settled man is closest to imitating the story of Creation. The concept of this project was to develop a garden by extending the pure and contemporary architecture of this magnificent villa designed by Boris Buchet and locate on the swiss shore of the Geneva lake.

series of four terraces supported by white, dry stone walls, three of the terraces covered in grass, the fourth in gravel, these four terraces are joined by black polished concrete footboards. At the end of each wall, groups of three Florence cypresses frame the view towards the lake. A very “Sud de la France” feel with these trees at the foot of which grow annual cistus that reseed at their discretion.

A waxed black concrete bench occupies the gazebo surrounded by osmanthuses and a bed of lavender surrounded by ‘Faulkner’ boxwood. Roses, hydrangeas, lemon trees and wisteria complete the decor. The garden isn’t just a pretty piece of land on which a house is built. It is an outdoor extension of the inner space. Like any inhabited space, it fulfils a function. A form matches this function: it is the architecture of the setting. The landscape architect’s work initially involves defining what role the garden will play in the owners’ lives. Next, the designer must conceive the appropriate form by drawing inspiration from the soul of the setting to finally produce a style true to Atelier Jar- dins’ values: classic in its principles yet resolutely modern in its process.

This style uses evergreens for structure so that the garden’s architecture can be seen throughout the year. Perennials and annuals are then layered into the design which unfold and change with the seasons. The colours of the foliage and flowers are categorised into monochrome masses where white and blue are often favoured. Water, no matter the form, is always present. This at expanse dotted with a few ornamental trees and apple trees wasn’t very inviting. The garden was confined to the surroundings of the house. The entire plot had to be reorganized to waken the urge to discover, to walk, to hide. Close to the house, a vegetable garden, a bed of flowers, a rose garden, a bed of ivy from which emerges the structure of a beautiful hundred-yearold apple tree, and beyond, grassed alleys, clumps of grass, shrubbery and undergrowth all built around a “channel” of flowers, of Myosotis perennials, iris and gauras. Reduce Cutting Frequency To Deliver Cost Savings With Toro’s LT-F3000 The Toro LT-F3000’s innovative triple flail concept can reduce cutting frequency to deliver cost savings.

The latest addition to Toro’s groundscare machinery range is the LT-F3000. The machine, which features a new cutting concept, is expected to appeal to councils and landscape contractors looking for ways to economically increase productivity and efficiency. Offering lower operating costs, affordable replacement parts, easy servicing and sheer usability, the LT-F3000 is, says Toro, a unique and versatile mower that is the ideal option when also keeping a tight rein on finances. Lely’s national sales manager Jeff Anguige explains more: “Offering a completely new cutting concept to triple mowing, the innovative three flail cutting system in this machine gives operators a chance to cut long or short, wet or dry, and coarser grass, in one sweep.

“This unrivalled versatility means you can make real savings by mowing less often, making it the perfect choice for those working to tight budgets and time frames.” Easily tackling the most challenging environments – from the widest open spaces to the narrowest verges – with greater ground contour control, this simple-to-operate mower makes light work of parklands, roadside verges, housing estate green spaces and other grassed areas. In addition to usability, time and money savings, the LT-F3000 delivers a superior after-cut appearance and is driven by a powerful Kubota 33kW (44.2hp) 4-cylinder diesel engine.

“Its advanced blade design delivers unmatched cut quality in all types of grass, and in all types of weather,” says Jeff, who adds that durability is also a key feature in the new model. “The three flail cutting system has been built to withstand the rigors of all heavy-duty applications. They’re much more durable than cylinders and even rotary systems,” he explains. “In fact, the intelligent blade design ensures that if an object is hit, the blades simply swing out of the way to avoid damage. They're also easy to sharpen and cost-effective to replace, for added peace of mind.” An all-round versatile and intelligent machine, the Toro LT-F3000 looks set to both meet budget demands and deliver high standards across the groundscare and landscape sectors. www.toro.com

aECOm Creates Traditional Hillside Village Landscape For The First Park Hyatt Resort In Europe Global infrastructure services firm AECOM has completed the landscape architecture of the Park Hyatt Mallorca, a new luxury resort set within the Cap Vermell Estate. Open this month, it is the first Park Hyatt Resort in Europe and the first Hyatt Hotel in Mallorca, providing 142 guest rooms and 16 uniquely designed suites. Recreational facilities will include swimming pools, a fitness centre and a luxury spa.

AECOM is built to deliver a better world. We design, build, finance and operate infrastructure assets for governments, businesses and organisations in more than 150 countries. 64

Landscape & Urban Design Issue 20

The landscape architecture of the five-hectare resort, set in an area of natural beauty, reflects the style of traditional Mallorcan hillside villages and farmhouses. The design draws on the native landscape to sensitively blend the site with the surrounding mountainous region on the north east coast of the island. In addition to landscape architecture, AECOM collaborated on the delivery of the masterplan for the Park Hyatt Mallorca, and provided economic and cost consultancy.

Responding to the architectural vision for the buildings, which were designed by DSA Architects International, AECOM’s approach was to marry the built environment with the natural flora and vegetation of the island. An important aspect of the landscape design was to merge the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces, so that guests perceive the private outdoor areas outside their rooms as an extension of the interior. AECOM worked closely with the architects to position the buildings, creating interesting spaces to showcase planting and attractive public spaces. There is also a central water feature in the piazza between the reception, bakery and tapas bar.

Aecom

As a fully integrated firm, we connect knowledge and experience across our global network of experts to help clients solve their most complex challenges. The dramatic and steep topography of the site has been retained, with the hotel buildings positioned across three main terraces. Terracing was a strong design direction from the early stages of the project and additional smaller terraces typical of traditional Mallorcan hilltop settlements are scattered across the development. A key feature of the hotel’s landscape architecture is a cascading stream that runs through the site, closely following the route that a river would follow.

In the central piazza at the heart of the development is a prominent clock tower, which is a visible focus point throughout the site. Blending the natural and built environment was integral to the landscaping. Natural plants including native pines, Holm oaks and vertical Cypress trees have been introduced across the site to blend the development with its surrounding scenery. This natural planting allows the native landscape to harmoniously merge with the edges of the development, helping place the buildings within the existing natural terrain.

The detailed planting design is more ornamental, reflecting the region’s strong agricultural past. Clusters of buildings that will house hotel guests help to create the hillside village feel. Each cluster features one of Mallorca’s fruit-bearing trees, including lemon, fig, almond, and olive trees. The landscape design replicates the island’s traditional village hillside farms, where buildings are typically surrounded by orchards. Authenticity was a driving force behind AECOM’s approach to landscape design. Locally sourced Spanish stone was used to create low drystone walls reminiscent of ‘tanques’, the traditional agricultural terracing found in the region. Ashley Scott, Principal Director, AECOM, said: “By introducing traditional agricultural landscaping, the Park Hyatt Mallorca sensitively reflects an important part of the island’s history.

The site successfully recreates the character of charming traditional country houses set on hillsides surrounded by olive trees while incorporating the luxury amenities of the world’s finest hotels. Authentically detailed with the local character, the hotel is a luxury retreat that plays homage to Mallorca’s unique heritage.” Additional landscape features include a sunken olive grove and a central 300 year-old olive tree, which is located outside the reception building and immediately sets the tone of the hotel’s landscaping. The main pool cascades down the slope, providing pleasant spots to enjoy the view and lounge by the water, while the pool bar is tucked between the pools and next to a waterfall bridge. The luxury spa relaxation terrace at the top of the site has an impressive vista over the hotel and of the surrounding mountains and the ocean.

Industry first for Addagrip Terraco Ltd BBA certification received for Resin Bound Surfacing range.

Addagrip Terraco Ltd are delighted to announce that their Addaset, Addabound and Terrabound Resin Bound porous surfaces have all achieved BBA certification, making them the first and only Resin Bound Surfacing manufacturer to achieve this standard. BBA certification is widely known throughout the construction industry as a symbol of quality and reassurance. It is a vital ingredient for product manufacturers to help ensure acceptance with specifiers, building control, Local Authorities and insurers. The BBA have worked with Addagrip to achieve the approval of their Resin Bound Surfacing through the BBA’s robust testing and assessment schemes. Roger Critchley, Managing Director of Addagrip Terraco Ltd, says “With the continuing growth in the use of seamless Resin Bound Surfacing over the last 10 years, we have seen many new suppliers, manufacturers and DIY suppliers enter the marketplace. The BBA accreditation will set a benchmark for quality resin bound products and installations within the industry. The Addagrip Terraco Resin Bound products are a complete resin and aggregate system, installed by an Addagrip approved contractor to ensure that the correct ratio of resin to aggregate is achieved and the product installed according to our specific guidelines. Gaining the BBA certification has been a long process as we are the first company to invest in what we see as a very significant step forward in the Resin Bound industry. The BBA carried out site visits, inspecting old installations in order to confirm and check their condition after many years use, as well as visiting a live installation to witness the mixing and application process. A further range of independent product testing was also carried out which included permeability testing, as Resin Bound Surfacing is regularly used on SUDS-based schemes.” Addagrip Terraco Ltd views the BBA certification as a major step forward and one that could be potentially game changing for the Resin Bound industry.
