Month-long Arts, Crafts, Food and Drink Extravaganza at RHS Garden Rosemoor Throughout September and until 2 October, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Garden Rosemoor in Great Torrington, Devon becomes THE place to go if you’re into arts, crafts, food or drink. Rosemoor celebrates the rich heritage of arts and crafts, food and drink that the local area has to offer. Starting with the Artists’ Garden Exhibition on 2 September and culminating in the now-famous Rosemoor Apple Day on 2 October, there will be treats for all the senses.

The Artists' Garden: Art Exhibition 2 – 18 September The popular Artists’ Garden art exhibition returns to Rosemoor, bringing together more than 80 of the South West’s most talented artists all under one roof. The exciting and colourful display of pictures, prints and cards are inspired by the natural world, especially gardens, plants and flowers. They have been created using a variety of media and will also include landscapes, seascapes, animals and wildlife pictures from well-known and less familiar local artists. The exhibition opens daily, 2 –18 September, 11am – 5pm. All the works exhibited are for sale, and visitors will be able to talk to at least two of the artists every day. Celebrate September Weekends 2 - 4, 10 – 11 and 17 – 18 September In addition to the rich colours of the late summer and early autumn in the garden, for three weekends in September, Rosemoor celebrates the work of more than 40 different local craftspeople and food artisans. It will feature a range of interesting, unusual and eminently quaffable real ales from near and far – plus ciders, too – all served direct from the barrel. We will celebrate the harvest with displays of produce from

the garden, and food stalls, as well as the chance to sample and buy delicious wines from Devon and Cornish vineyards. This is our fourth Real Ale and Cider Weekend, which once again promises to be a truly great occasion. Note: if you're worried about driving, two-pint carry-outs will also be available so that you can take your favourites home. Apple Day 2 October Our arts, crafts, food and drink extravaganza then culminates in Rosemoor’s famous Apple Day. A grand day out for all the family, Rosemoor’s Apple Day is organised in conjunction with Orchards Live, Thornhayes Nursery and the RHS South West Area Fruit Group – who will endeavour to identify your unknown apple cultivars. With fantastic apple displays; tastings; planting and cultivation tips; children’s activities and trails; plus stalls selling fruit, cider and apple juice, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Angle Twitch, a Morris side from Barnstaple whose dances are loosely based on both Border and Cotswold styles, will be dancing in the Fruit Field today with their brightly coloured tatter jackets, sticks and bells – truly a ‘rainbow’ Morris side. There are so many reasons to visit Rosemoor this autumn. For more information on events at RHS Garden Rosemoor, or if you are interested in becoming a member visit www.rhs.org.uk/ rosemoor. All of the events are included in Normal garden admission and are Free for RHS members.

Kebony Adds Sustainability To City Hang-Out Slussplan Urban Park Celebrates One Year Anniversary

L

ast year, the Malmö Municipality in Sweden unveiled the opening of Slussplan, a brand new urban park. One year on, Slussplan Urban Park has proved to be a great success, offering a public space without the use of tropical hardwood, ensuring sustainability at its core.

8

Landscape & Urban Design Issue 21

The park combines a unique stairway providing access to Malmö’s historic canal, green space for the residents of the surrounding neighbourhood and triangular seating made from sustainable Kebony wood. Bordered by the existing buildings, the triangular park is divided into two parts featuring circular vegetation beds adorned with shrubs and plants on one side and an active urban square on the other. The park vaunts an art installation by David Svensson, which was unveiled at the park’s opening last year by Ola Melin, director of Urban planning division in Malmö.

Designed by Mandaworks for the Malmö Municipality, this project is a triumph of landscaping architecture, weaving together infrastructure to create a new area for urban ecology and recreational space. Following the outright ban imposed upon tropical hardwood in Stockholm, and a growing trend in European cities of legislating against, and voluntarily avoiding the use of timber imported from the tropics in public projects, Mandaworks wanted to ensure that the materials chosen were sourced from sustainably managed, non-tropical forests. Kebony’s sustainable wood was therefore selected for the ‘urban hang-out’ benches along the promenade, due to the material’s positive impact in reducing demand for high performance tropical timber. A recent study by environmental consulting firm Bergfald & Co. demonstrated that Kebony has a substantially lower carbon footprint than its tropical hardwood equivalents.

The study shows that the carbon footprint for clear-fell Brazilian Ipê is in the range of 7,500–15,000 kilograms per cubic metre; whilst the carbon footprint of Kebony is approximately 459 kilograms per cubic meter, both figures include treatment and transportation to Northern Europe. This paves the way for a future in which wood is an integral and, most importantly, sustainable part of the construction industry.

D

eveloped in Norway, the patented Kebony technology is an environmentally friendly process, which modifies sustainably sourced softwoods by heating the wood with furfuryl alcohol - an agricultural by-product. By polymerising the wood’s cell wall, the softwoods permanently take on the attributes of tropical hardwood including high durability, hardness and dimensional stability, without the need for tropical deforestation.

For Kebony, this waterside urban landscaping project follows another recent project at Fjord City, Oslo, a publically accessible park and bathing complex. Here there was a similar effort to capitalise on Kebony’s strong eco-credentials and durability to transform a post-industrial waterfront into a recreational space of this nature. In both cases, Kebony’s versatility as a material has rendered it invaluable for the construction of everything from street furniture to public boardwalk.

The silver-grey patina that the wood develops over its elongated life-span has also singled it out as a popular material for architects in marine settings like these, where its matured colour is frequently a perfect complement to the setting. Martin Arfalk of Mandaworks commented “We wanted the park to be a lasting space for public recreation and Kebony’s wood is suitably durable that it will stand up to wearing and weathering. Its attractive natural aesthetic also perfectly complements the park’s character.” Per Thyberg, Country Manager of Kebony Sweden, commented “It is gratifying to see Kebony once again selected for the development of a recreational public space like this where its durability and beautiful aesthetics will contribute to the public’s enjoyment of the Slussplan Urban Park.” Visit www.kebony.com and www.mandaworks.com for further information.

What Makes Leaves Change Color In The Fall? A beautiful fall landscape is a sign your trees have been hard at work

S

oon enough, summer trips to the beach and refreshing lemonade will be replaced by autumn’s cool breeze, football games and pumpkin lattes. The real sign fall is here though, is the brilliant folliage — the most beloved sign of autumn.

20 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 21

Bright green leaves transform into browns, buttery yellows, deep reds and vibrant shades of orange. This awe-inspiring phenomenon is greatly appreciated, yet often misunderstood. Many believe that cool weather alone causes leaves to change color.

Leaves

While temperature can dictate intensity, it is just one of the factors that play a part in painting a striking fall landscape. Cooler temperatures, changes in rainfall, and most of all, shortening day length, play a role in the changing color of tree leaves. This is what’s really going on behind the scenes as green leaves turn to shades of autumn. During the spring and summer, leaves are busy creating the foods necessary for the tree’s growth. But in fall, leaves reduce their food-making process because of changing temperatures and the amount of sunlight. Chlorophyll, the chemical that gives leaves their bright green color, begins to breakdown and disappear. Carotenes, the substances that gives leaves their yellow and orange hues, are present in leaves throughout the growing season.

The larger amount of green chlorophyll masks the colors of carotenoids until fall’s arrival when chlorophyll production wanes and other pigments get their chance to shine. The pigments that produce the most exciting colors —reds, pinks and purples — come from anthocyanins, which are manufactured from sugars the tree produces. As days shorten and nights cool, excess sugars are trapped in the leaf as veins leading into and out of the leaves close. Combined with bright light, the sugars are used in the production of anthocyanin pigments. These colors are the most variable from year to year, because their formation is the most dependent on favorable fall environmental conditions and sunlight.

By late autumn, the yellow and red pigments, following the green, disintegrate in the leaves. This final step exposes the brown tannins. When leaves fall, they decompose and provide the soil with nutrients. These leaves also become a food source for many organisms. Sugar maples, birches and other broad-leafed trees shed their leaves in the fall. But before they do, they salvage as many nutrients as possible to store through the cold months and reuse the following spring. Autumn leaf colors vary from year to year. Some years, those bright and beautiful reds, purples and yellows last for weeks, while other years, autumn leaves quickly turn to brown. The factor responsible for the onset of fall and the intensity of autumn color is the weather.

A warm, wet spring combined with a mild summer and bright autumn days with cool nights results in more vivid colors. On the other hand, a late spring or severe drought will delay the onset of fall color for weeks. A warm fall will also dull autumn colors. Wind and rain during the fall color season will often knock the leaves off the tree before they can produce their best color. Trees under stress may discolor or drop leaves early. Extreme heat, drought, insects, disease and damaged roots can all be great stressors for trees. The best time of year to examine your trees for signs of stress is early September. Healthy, well-cared for trees showcase the most glorious leaf colors. To promote your trees’ ability to offer their best fall color, talk to a certified arborist at Davey Tree. Indoor Gardening

Make Your Own Seasons and Grow Indoors Year-Round You don’t need a yard to cultivate a garden — you can have it all indoors.

T

he kitchen counter is just one of the many places plants will pop up, as indoor gardening becomes the new, easy way people can grow vegetables, herbs, foliage plants and flowers all year. One of the main advantages of indoor gardens is they aren’t limited by seasons, which means gardeners can grow summer crops in the middle of winter and vice versa. Truly any plant can be grown indoors, as long as the growing environment is suited to the plant’s needs. You can grow virtually anything inside as long as you have a little space, a lot of light and decide whether you want to grow in soil or hydroponically. Hydroponic systems grow plants in anything but soil, mediums such as coco coir, sand, gravel, or straight water. When growing hydroponically, the gardener provides all the nutrients a plant would need to their water supply. Plants are more sensitive to environmental changes when grown

24 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 21

hydroponically and should be checked daily.

2.

Systems with soil are little more forgiving and can be managed more on an as-needed basis. Soil found outside is not appropriate, since it’s often too heavy and may contain weeds and insects. Opt for a mix specific to indoor plants. Starting your indoor garden is simple. Maintaining the garden’s "Indoor Limiting Factors" is the key to success. Indoor Limiting Factors 1.

Let there be light. The type of lighting needed in any indoor gardening system depends on the types of plants you want to grow. Aggressive fruiting and flowering plants or gardens with dense canopies need more intense lighting compared to others. There is more to a grow light than the bulb so talk to your Homestead Gardens garden center specialist about buying a Sun System that includes all the proper equipment.

3.

4.

Don’t let it dry out. Whether you’re growing in soil or water, a clean source of water is required to grow healthy plants. Water with added chemicals, such as public tap water with fluoride, would upset the balance. Well water also works in hydroponic systems as long as the pH levels are monitored closely. Regularly test water and soil pH levels for the best results. Get settled. Regulating indoor factors like heat, humidity and CO2 keep plants alive. CO2 that plants use during photosynthesis is important so exhaust fans and air filtration systems are critical. Supplemental CO2 can be added to indoor systems with mushroom bags or natural gas burners. Feed and repeat. Plants grown indoors will need an extra boost since most of the nutrients in the soil or growing medium are quickly

eaten by the roots. Good sources of fertilizer facilitate the needs of the indoor garden. Choose organic if you’re growing vegetables. 5.

Get to the root of it. A healthy root zone is the key to strong plants. Well-draining soil or soil-less mix allows oxygen to flow through. When combined with air pumps, stones and diffusers, your system will be complete.

What’s next? Get started growing. Almost anything can be grown in your indoor garden as long as it eventually doesn’t outgrow your space. However, consider growing plants with similar light, humidity and watering needs together. From hydroponic food production to small space gardening solutions, Sunlight Supply products for gardeners of all levels are available online and at Homestead Gardens Davidsonville Modern Homesteading department.

Lawn Maintenance and Prep

Live on Lawn! Tips for End of Summer Health From barbecues and summer parties to gardening and endless games of fetch with your pup, your lawn has endured lots of activity this summer.

B

ut, the summer isn’t over yet and your lawn needs some TLC. Go out with a bang by rejuvenating your lawn and prepping for the cooler season ahead. Follow these tips to have your yard look greener, fluffier and healthier than ever next spring. Help Your Lawn Hang On All Winter Long 1.

Know How to Mow. When mowing, keep the mower blades high (3” or higher) to encourage healthy roots.

2.

Agree to Reseed. If all of your lawn looks dry and brown, overseed the whole lawn. If only certain areas look bare, reseed only those spots.

3.

First, perform a soil test and improve if needed. Then cut grass lower than normal and remove clippings. Level and rake soil smooth. With a broadcast spreader, apply a seed that best suits your region and weather. Finally, water.

4.

Prepare with Care. Get your lawn ready for the cooler weather ahead by fortifying it with nutrients. An organic fall winterizer promotes growth, helps lawns recover from drought and increases winter hardiness. So apply an organic fall winterizer after you’ve seeded and mowed. Follow instructions here. Fido First. Always use an organic lawn fertilizer or winterizer. Harsher, chemical lawn products can be eaten, ingested

or passed on to your dog. This exposure has been linked with a higher risk of canine cancer. Keep your dog alive longer by making sure their paws are safe thanks to organic lawn products. And just like that, you’re done with lawn care for the summer! How are you going to celebrate? We foresee a barbecue with fresh herbs and spicy homegrown peppers.

Small Spaces Yield Big Flavor With Brazelberries ® Berry Shrubs

F

resh blueberries and raspberries have never been easier to grow. With new BrazelBerries®, all you need is a sunny spot big enough for a container. Patios, decks, front steps and urban balconies are perfect choices. These revolutionary berry shrubs are changing where fruit is grown.

28 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 21

Easy to grow and requiring little care, BrazelBerries thrive in containers on patios, decks and balconies They’re as decorative as they are tasty, offering compact, gorgeous foliage for any small outdoor space. And, all BrazelBerries are selfpollinating, so only one bush is needed to produce fruit. Why are BrazelBerries different? “They’ve been selected to be simple to grow, beautiful in landscapes, and delicious to eat,” says Layci

Gragnani, program manager for the brand collection. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, blueberry consumption grew more than 500 percent from 1980-2010. Growing your own edibles is the perfect way to add berries to your plate and anyone from young urbanites to seasoned gardeners can grow BrazelBerries.

Raspberry Shortcake™ is a dwarf- raspberry perfect for children; it’s thornless and needs no trellising. This innovative variety makes it possible for the first time to bring raspberries up on the patio. Aust suggests following these tips for bushes that will flourish in containers season after season.

BrazelBerries text BrazelBerries

Raspberries don’t get any easier or more compact!

Tip: If Raspberry Shortcake starts to yellow in the summer, a balanced liquid fertilizer will help perk it up in addition to lots of water. In intense heat, partial shade in the late afternoon will help to prevent heat stress.

BrazelBerries Raspberry Shortcake, a thornless dwarf raspberry that grows to be 2-3 feet tall and produces mid-summer fruit has a sweet, traditional raspberry flavor. Grow in zones 5-9. •

Grows best in neutral soil. Any balanced potting mix is fine. Plant in full sun in a large container (at least 14 inches in diameter) with a drainage hole. Six hours of sun per day is ideal. Feed in early and late spring with a balanced liquid fertilizer.

Prune out only the dead canes with no new growth at soil level in early spring.

These BrazelBerries blueberries are delicious and beautiful, offering year round appeal. vPeach Sorbet™ blueberry is a four-season showstopper that grows 1½ - 2 feet tall.

photo BrazelBerries

In the spring, leaves range from peach to pink, orange to emerald green and white, bell-shaped flowers yield abundant mid-summer healthy, sweet fruit. In most cooler climates, Peach Sorbet™ foliage turns a rich purple through the winter. Grow in zones 5-10. Jelly Bean™ blueberry may be small but it’s prolific, producing a bumper-crop of large, sweet jelly-scented fruit. Brilliant green foliage emerges in spring, which gives way to darker greens with red hues throughout the summer and fall. Grow in zones 4 – 8.

BrazelBerries

Blueberry Glaze™ blueberry looks like a boxwood, but with nutrient-rich black berries. It grows 2 – 3 feet tall. The white tinged with pink spring flowers contrast nicely with the deep green foliage. Small, mid-summer berries have intense flavor, much like wild blueberries, and they pack a healthful punch with their antioxidantrich qualities. Grow in zones 5 - 8. •

All BrazelBerries blueberries grow best in acid soil. (A rhododendron/ azalea formulation is perfect.) Incorporate some peat moss if available. Plant them in full sun in a large container (at least 14 inches in diameter) with a drainage hole.

30 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 21

Feed in early and late spring with a granular or liquid acid fertilizer. Rhododendron/Azalea blends are perfect.

Mesh netting saves berries from birds and squirrels.

Prune once fruiting is complete. Remove canes that have fruited, leaving new canes to fruit the following season.

1.

Plant in multiple pots and use as a mini hedge to front a wall fountain.

2.

Showcase as a specimen near a doorway or to line steps.

3.

Top an outdoor table for easy snacking.

Tip: Protect BrazelBerries from frost damage by placing a insulated plant cover over them the afternoon before a freeze. Move the plants during extreme cold spells to an unheated garage or put up against a building with a thick layer of mulch all around them to protect them from cold.

T

he International Garden Festival invites visitors to explore twenty-six interactive garden installations created by seventytwo landscape architects, architects, designers and visual artists from nine countries.

For the 17th edition, five new creations by designers from Canada, the United States, France and Switzerland will join the temporary installations on view and a sixth will be exhibited at special events throughout the summer. Five new gardens of the 2016 edition of the Festival were selected by the jury from 203 projects submitted from 31 countries for the annual competition. LE CAVEAU is a complex construction made of stone gabions that support a levitating green platform.

YCLOPS is gargantuan cone 8 metres in diameter suspended over the forest floor. The MAISON DE JACQUES provides a happy home to a forest of beans where children can play hide-and-seek in one of many secret gardens. In TiiLT, 24 tents populate a space like a school of fish or a flock of birds. CARBONE offers a charred tree trunk, capturing carbon during its entire life and contributing to the renaissance of the forest. These new installations create new experiences and environments to add to those of past editions. Special events include the annual fundraising dinner in aid of the Festival in the potager on August 5 and a series of events to launchExperimenting Landscapes Testing the Limits of the Garden, a new book by Emily Waugh on the Festival to be published by Birkhäuser in September. About the New Gardens of the 17th Edition LE CAVEAU by Christian Poules, architect and landscape architect, Basle, Switzerland. The growing plane is shrouded in the intimacy of Le Caveau - a simple room of stone and earth. It is a room for reflection. It is a room for dreamers. Just as the plane levitates before us, we are held in the balance of the stone and life itself. The personification of our own imagination is suspended in time. The primitive plane symbolizes a beginning, while the seeds and the soil form the tilted horizon between earth and sky.

40 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 21

The beauty of the garden is found in the simplicity and contradiction of material, light, time and space. It is a shelter for meditation and a canvas for nature. In Le caveau, vastness is held behind its ramparts.

Christian Poules is both an architect and landscape architect who constructs poetic places in the balance of the two disciplines. Practicing outside of fad or style, he is concerned only with the development

of the common ground between human sensory experience and natural phenomena. Nature, alone, is his muse and in her realm his work manifests care

and understanding of the ephemeral and temporal qualities of space. CYCLOPS by Craig Chapple, architect, Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Cyclops is a singular object on the landscape as well as a singular frame of the landscape. It is made up of 100 8-meter long tapering timber planks held in the shape of an inverted cone around a central opening for the user to occupy. These planks are fastened to each other at the innermost diameter and held upright by a 150 mm steel ring beam at the outer diameter.

At first approach, Cyclops is an object on the landscape, seen as a clear, platonic form. Through its transparency and porosity, however, it is an object that is also dynamic and changing, blending with the environment. By entering the central 1.5 m opening at the bottom of the cone, the user enters into a different relationship with the object and the landscape. By experiencing it from the inside-out, the object acts to frame the surrounding landscape and sky for the viewer in this same dynamic, temporal

way by blending the manmade, platonic clarity of the frame with the organic and natural. The viewer plays the central role of the work in rediscovering the relationship between the object, the frame, and the natural landscape. Formally trained as an architect at Yale University but with a deep commitment to creating art, Craig Chapple has pursued both architecture and the visual arts simultaneously throughout his career. Craig’s work is born from the synergy of these two disciplines, producing work that focuses on the overlap

of line, pattern, texture, and process. He works in analog and digital practices in drawing, painting, and sculpture. LA MAISON DE JACQUES by Romy Brosseau, Rosemarie Faille-Faubert, Émilie GagnéLoranger, architectural interns, Quebec City (Québec) Canada. La Maison de Jacques (or Jack’s House from the children’s fable Jack and the Beanstalk) is different from the one we know. You might think you have just stepped out of a children’s story. The house is a green grove that is enveloped in bloom.

You enter by walking on stepping stones that traverse a ground-cover made of clay beads. Once inside, you wander between the rows of beans of tightly winding their way up a light wooden structure. The walls divide the space into a series of small hidden gardens, singular in their proportions. These cocoons are ideal hiding places for a game of hideand-seek. One remains a secret, inaccessible...

bring a taste of goodness to everyone.

La Maison de Jacques is magical. It will be built over several weeks, starting with the seedlings in May that will grow to be more than three metres in height in a short time. Their clumps of red flowers will be in bloom by the end of July and then the beans will form to

and smells. With her projects she strives to redefine the relationship between humans and their environment through architecture. Émilie Gagné-Loranger seeks to reveal some new poetry from her research on interior spaces. Her projects explore the limits, feelings and aspects of intimate spaces. TiiLT by SRCW [Sean Radford, architect, Chris Wiebe, designer], Winnipeg (Manitoba) Canada. Finding roots in the formal geometries of the labyrinth and the many informal camping traditions in the Canadian landscape, TiiLT is a transformable and inhabitable place for visitors to act, or to idle, however they may be inclined.

Each structure may be flipped between two orientations, responding to the position of the sun, offering alternating views and shifting pathways through the site. The toggling movement conjures a school of fish, or a flock of birds, flitting in opposite directions yet connected as a whole. The straw-like lightness of the structures and the white skin recall a field of floral blooms, contrasting the surrounding green landscape and blue sky. TiiLT challenges the notion of the garden in creating an interactive environment that is part sculpture and part landscape - to evoke a sense of place and beauty from modest elements. TiiLT provides simple, intimate, shaded spaces in congregation, retrieving

memories of long days in short seasons, time spent alone and among neighbours, embracing the feeling of shared disconnection, together. Sean Radford and Chris Wiebe (SRCW) are designers active in the Winnipeg architecture community. SRCW regards the built form as an instigator of ideas, a generator for reinterpretation of the phenomena of everyday experience. SRCW is interested in challenging conventional engagement of form and space, with the goal of inducing pause, inspiring reaction, and inciting response. SRCW’s unconventional use of everyday objects as sculptural materials seeks to create accessibility through familiarity, drawing upon

shared experience in the user to evoke delight and excitement. SRCW regards the art of the garden as the creation of an interactive sensory environment, to be fully inhabited in moments of discovery and revelation. CARBONE by Coache Lacaille Paysagistes (Maxime Coache, landscape architect, Victor Lacaille, landscape architect and Luc Dallanora, landscape architect), Nantes, France. The garden is an artifice and leaves many traces. The Earth is a garden. Farming, industry, the internet all leave their mark. Since the dawn of time, nature is altered. The gardener is the one with the restorative power. A gesture of kindness.

This installation evokes the cycle of production as a parallel to the carbon cycle. The garden landscaped or the landscape gardened. Regenerating the forest and sowing where we have harvested brings nature back to life. Transmit the love of landscape to those who will outlive us. A noble and familiar material, wood is our crib, our bed, our coffin. Cut a tree, remove it from the forest, in itself a vast garden, is the fruit of our labour. It is the result of the work of those who came before us, who planted a seed and provide us today with the wood that gives us rest. A sculpted tree trunk, partially cut into pieces helps to illustrate the primary material used to build furniture.

A stump and its roots, a tree trunk cut into parts and modules made of timber, some lightly burned on the surface. A young tree grows where the tree might have grown tall had the tree not fallen. Coache Lacaille Paysagistes was created in 2013 by Maxime Coache and Victor Lacaille. Luc Dallanora joined this duo in 2015. They are all graduates of the École nationale supérieure de la nature et du paysage de Blois in France. The primary interest of this trio of landscape architects is the landscape. If their knowledge requires creativity, they are also artists. Their role is somewhere between the gardener, the designer, the architect and the urban planner.

Each new project is inspired by the context and by those for whom the project is intended to be used; it is also the pretext for new experiments. A special mention was made by the jury to DRESS UP!by Ran Hwang, artist, Sangmok Kim, architect, Sungwoo Kim, architect, Shin Hee Park, fashion designers from Seoul, South Korea / Beijing, China / New York, USA. The garden will be presented at special events throughout the summer. About the International Garden Festival The International Garden Festival is the leading contemporary garden festival in North America. Since its inception in 2000, more than 150 gardens have been exhibited at Grand-Métis and as extra-mural projects in Canada and around the world. Presented at Les Jardins de Métis, at the gateway to the Gaspé Peninsula, the Festival is held on a site adjacent to the historic gardens created by Elsie Reford, thereby establishing a bridge between history and modernity, and a dialogue between conservation, tradition and innovation. Each year the Festival exhibits conceptual gardens created by more than

seventy architects, landscape architects and designers from various disciplines in a pristine environment on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. The International Garden Festival is presented with the financial assistance of many public and private partners: Canada Council for the Arts, Canadian Heritage, Canada Summer Jobs, Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and Emploi-Québec. Rigby Taylor Helps Bring Nature Into Towns

Increasing numbers of county, borough and parish councils, as well as schools, are seeing high levels of improvements in the increased levels of visual impact and the biodiversity benefits being created by their use of Rigby Taylor’s EuroFlor urban flower mixtures. Importantly, too, local community budgets are also benefiting from the reduced cost of the urban flower seed mixes compared to bedding schemes. Indeed, not only is the seed and installation cost much cheaper, but in-season maintenance costs are also reduced. As an example, Monmouthshire County Council has been winning plaudits from both the public and wildlife experts with outstanding results from using EuroFlor. Upon entering the county visitors are greeted by welcome signs carrying a bee symbol to indicate the work the council is doing to encourage pollinating insects and to acknowledge the council’s recently introduced Pollinator Policy. Tenor and Classic (perennial and annual) EuroFlor mixture were sown on Monmouth’s roundabouts and roadsides, and attracted hundreds of letters of praise from the public. Nigel Leaworthy, operations manager for landscape and grounds maintenance, says: “The displays ticked so many boxes in relation to the Pollinator Policy, ie no plants grown in greenhouses, no travelling to the individual sites once planted to weed every two weeks, no watering, etc.

“We identified strategic locations where the flower mixes would look best – roundabouts, housing estates, trunk roads and motorways – and determined that the EuroFlor mixes would eliminate 85 per cent of our annual bedding and provide savings in excess of £40,000 per annum.” Other councils throughout the UK have had similar experiences. EuroFlor mixtures provide: • Choice of both annual and perennial mixtures • Selected mixtures for both spring and autumn sowings • Low installation and maintenance cost • High visual impact & long flower displays • Support for pollinating insects • Ecological & species biodiversity • Germination tested and packed in foil sachets. Ecology seminar shows what wildflowers can do An ecology seminar at Great Barr Golf Club in Birmingham was attended by over 40 sports, amenity turf and landscape professionals who heard some excellent presentations on the ecological opportunities provided by wildflowers, how this can be managed as part of a sustainable landscape programme and what innovative solutions are available. Also, Chris Stilgoe, head greenkeeper at the golf course, hosted an on-course site visit showing what can be achieved by sowing EuroFlor mixtures on the course. www.rigbytaylor.com

An improvement in personal management performance to enhance team motivation; and

A way to review practices to meet the challenges involved, by creating better ideas and solutions.

The five modules - team motivation, coaching skills, encouraging new ideas, managing meetings and supporting team performance – can be studied individually for the IOG Level 3 Certificate in Supervisory Management, totalling around 150 hours

of learning. The resulting workbook can subsequently also be put forward for accreditation to the Lantra Awards Level 3 Certificate in Leading and Managing Teams in Land-based Establishments. Alternatively, learners can enrol onto the Lantra Certificate without building up individual modules. The course can extend across nine months at a pace that suits the individual and is based on distance/home study learning, with tutor support primarily by email. Further details are available from the IOG by email – learning@iog.org – or by ‘phone at 01908 312 511.

Thus the Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) legislation was created with the aim of using permeable solutions that allow natural, environmentally friendly drainage. Suregreen have been dedicated to creating affordable products that are not only SuDS compliant but also help retain the natural beauty of Britain’s grassed areas. To further reduce environmental impact these also use largely recycled materials. Grass Reinforcement Meshes are a wonderful, and increasing used solution to many ground reinforcement needs. We offer two grades of mesh which will allow a natural grassed area to retain its aesthetically appealing look whilst providing a safe reinforced work area capable of withstanding car, pedestrian,

and bike traffic; perfect for walkways, driveways, car parks and more. PP40 Porous Paver is our flagship ground reinforcement product, years of experience in this sector has helped us develop one of the best pavers on the market. The specially selected polymer utilises a hexagonal design which is a naturally strong shape, allowing our paver to withstand the twisting dynamic loadings of cars without any issues. The unique 20mm ground spikes are part of the pavers moulding which further increases the paver’s ability to withstand the movement and turning of vehicles. Our pavers are available in black or green, and are suitable for both gravel and grassed finishes; ideal for car parks, domestic driveways, emergency access routes and more. Truckgrid Max is our heavy duty reinforcement solution able to deal with heavy loads and high pressure, designed to stand up to HGV lorries, dustcarts, skip lorries and forklifts.

This heavyweight paver is perfect for loading bays and industrial areas, and once again can be filled with grass or gravel. Our dedicated team of experts have designed and written in-depth installation and technical guides to make sure you get the most out of our products, which can be found online at www.sure-ground.com. We are also on hand for site visits or to offer advice as to which solution best meets your needs. Hedge

The Long And Short Of It Introduced To Ego’s Hedgetrimmer Range

T

wo lengths of hedge trimmer are now available in the range of 56 volt lithium-ion powered garden products from EGO Power+.

The range, which previously consisted solely of a 61cm option, now features a shorter 51cm model. As well as the new length, the brand has also introduced an articulating hedge feature that rotates to 45 and 90 degrees, both left and right, to help gardeners trim hard to reach areas. The new model also features an extended 33mm blade gap, 11mm more than the 61cm model. As well as having an increased load speed of 3000 to 3600 rpm.

56 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 21

Both hedgetrimmers boast EGO’s dual action, laser cut and diamond ground blade for increased precision and cleaner cuts to promote healthy, new hedge growth. EGO’s European marketing director, Steve Roskell, commented: “Our 2015 launch season showed us that gardeners are desperately seeking an alternative to petrol and electric products. The popularity of our range immediately showed us that our 56 volt products offer them just that! We’ve introduced a new shorter model to the hedge trimmer range as we want to make the range accessible for people with gardens of all sizes”. The hedge trimmers are powered by EGO’s 56 volt lithium-ion battery that is available as a 2Ah, 4Ah, 5Ah or 7.5Ah.

All batteries are interchangeable across the entire EGO range and featured the brand’s patented arc design and “keep cool” cell technology. The EGO Power+ system is a breakthrough in every way, and has been designed to deliver a new level of cordless performance. In just thirty minutes the 4.0Ah battery can be fully recharged using the rapid charger, which is another first in the lawn and garden world. The entire EGO range matches, if not exceeds, the performance of petrol products without the noise, fuss or fumes. Prices of the hedge trimmers start from £129. EGO Power+ products are available nationwide from independent Henton & Chattell dealers, and online at www.egopowerplus.co.uk.

Dedicated Sadolin Superdec user Gary Davies has gone on camera to talk about his passion for colour using the premium wood protection product.

Gary is a strong advocate of Sadolin Superdec and, since launching Lyme Bay Cabins five years ago, has specified its use to all his clients. He believes the superiority of the self-priming product in term of its application and finish, coupled with outstanding colour choice and longevity, make it the only product of choice.

Gary, the owner of Lyme Bay Cabins - which manufactures and installs quality log cabin garden buildings across the South West - shares his experiences of bringing colour to life in a short film available to view at https://youtu.be/ oXxPjdcqwDU The video showcases a number of projects carried out in Devon, and includes an insight into how the colour choices were made at each site.

Brett Paving Innovative Brett Landscaping Leads Industry With Bim Registered Products “Building Information Modelling is definitely the long-term future of construction, being the default design environment for many new architectural university graduates, and as such it is imperative the industry is prepared,” explains Andrew Gill, marketing manager at Brett Landscaping. “It is already mandatory that all products sourced for Government projects should be to BIM Level 2 and we are now starting to see BIM filter down to private sector projects.

B

rett Landscaping, the specialist commercial and domestic paving supplier, has announced its range of high quality commercial hard landscaping products has now been listed on the National BIM Library, making the company one of the industry’s earliest adopters of BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology. These BIM objects can be sourced for free through the National BIM Library, an online resource of thousands of building products that have been BIM registered – and this library now includes many

of Brett Landscaping’s most popular commercial products. The information held within the National BIM Library is invaluable to everyone involved in a building project, especially to the architect when it comes to choosing the most appropriate products. BIM is helping to create more definitive specifications. It enables an architect to make a more informed decision, as manufacturer data is included with each BIM object allowing for a side-by-side performance comparison before specifying, which also ensures compliance with standards.

78 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 21

BIM allows an architect to “walk through” a project, providing them with a better idea of what the final design will look like and how it should perform. This in turn will help to prevent future problems and reduce potential conflict in the construction process. BIM also works in line with RIBA’s Plan of Works. Relating to the RIBA Plan of Works ensures that all parties involved in a project are working to the same process, which once again helps to mitigate any future conflict and offers a better understanding of what is required from the whole team.

“Brett is renowned for innovation and remaining at the forefront of industry developments – being part of the BIM revolution is another example of this. By having our products included in the National BIM Library we are providing our customers – whether that is an architect sourcing the products, a contractor using them, a merchant selling them, or the facilities management team managing the infrastructure – with the products they need to succeed within this highly competitive market,” adds Andrew. Further information about Brett Landscaping and BIM can be found at www.brettpaving.co.uk or by calling 0845 60 80 577.

Stewart Garden had a major presence at this year’s Ball Colegrave Summer Showcase at Milton, near Banbury in July, where exhibits included schemes pairing Ball Colegrave’s plants with Stewart Garden’s Varese, Lead Effect, Blenheim and Sylvan planters.

Stewart Garden Lead Effect Planters and the popular Varese range in sandstone, granite and dark brown, take centre stage in Scotsdales Garden Centre’s displays.

Also unmissable was a striking red geranium display in the Stewart Garden Corinthian Black planter. Caroline Owen, owner of Scotsdales Garden Centre, Cambridge, said: “When we visited Ball

Stewart Garden Colegrave’s Summer Showcase, it was clear that its plants and Stewart Garden’s planters complemented one another beautifully. We knew a similar display would have great appeal among our customers. The designs we created have had a very positive effect on our planter sales, with Varese in sandstone proving particularly popular.” Stewart Garden’s contemporary Varese planters have an authentic textured appearance with all the benefits of highgrade plastic. This means they’re durable, affordable and lightweight, making them ideal for creating a stylish architectural garden feature and especially suitable for palms. Launched at Glee in 2015, the Varese planters collection has gone from strength to strength, exceeding its targeted growth. The elegant, Italian inspired planter is now available in dark brown, sandstone and granite and in two new sizes, medium (55cm) and low (35cm).

Industry first for Addagrip Terraco Ltd BBA certification received for Resin Bound Surfacing range. Addagrip Terraco Ltd are delighted to announce that their Addaset, Addabound and Terrabound Resin Bound porous surfaces have all achieved BBA certification, making them the first and only Resin Bound Surfacing manufacturer to achieve this standard. BBA certification is widely known throughout the construction industry as a symbol of quality and reassurance. It is a vital ingredient for product manufacturers to help ensure acceptance with specifiers, building control, Local Authorities and insurers. The BBA have worked with Addagrip to achieve the approval of their Resin Bound Surfacing through the BBA’s robust testing and assessment schemes. Roger Critchley, Managing Director of Addagrip Terraco Ltd, says “With the continuing growth in the use of seamless Resin Bound Surfacing over the last 10 years, we have seen many new suppliers, manufacturers and DIY suppliers enter the marketplace. The BBA accreditation will set a benchmark for quality resin bound products and installations within the industry. The Addagrip Terraco Resin Bound products are a complete resin and aggregate system, installed by an Addagrip approved contractor to ensure that the correct ratio of resin to aggregate is achieved and the product installed according to our specific guidelines. Gaining the BBA certification has been a long process as we are the first company to invest in what we see as a very significant step forward in the Resin Bound industry. The BBA carried out site visits, inspecting old installations in order to confirm and check their condition after many years use, as well as visiting a live installation to witness the mixing and application process. A further range of independent product testing was also carried out which included permeability testing, as Resin Bound Surfacing is regularly used on SUDS-based schemes.” Addagrip Terraco Ltd views the BBA certification as a major step forward and one that could be potentially game changing for the Resin Bound industry. Civils Expo 2016 Crossrail, Midlands Growth And Northern Powerhouse Heading Up The Agenda At Civils Expo 2016

C

ivils Expo, part of the award winning UK Construction Week, is the UK's leading event dedicated to civil engineering and construction, bringing together leading suppliers of the latest technologies, systems and products required in the civil sector. The seminar schedule has been released with some of the industry’s biggest names speaking on the sector’s biggest issues. To further explore the Crossrail project there will be another seminar on day two looking at challenges, strategies and considerations of the remodelling and construction of stations along the planned route. Stations

are now being upgraded to help cater for the expected increase in passenger numbers when the service starts. Speakers confirmed to discuss the environmental, design and maintenance considerations include Rand Watkins, Lead Project Engineer at TfL and Chris Frost, Future Station Project Manager at TfL. On the final day, Richard Ogden, Chairman of Buildoffsite will be looking at OFFSITE CONSTRUCTION: WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? Construction 2025 targets mean that the industry needs to increase its output and many have highlighted offsite as a potential answer. This seminar will examine whether offsite can provide

90 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 21

a viable method to meet current targets and increase productivity. Nathan Garnett, Event Director for Civils Expo, commented: “Britain’s infrastructure has been a hot topic of political discussion of late and is crucial to our future prosperity. For this reason, we’ve thought long and hard about the seminar schedule for Civils Expo, recognising that it will be a valuable platform for the industry to come together and devise strategy for the future. Importantly, the show also represents the first major event following the decision to leave the EU and as such will play a role in settling any nerves within the sector.”

Taking place at the Birmingham NEC from 18 – 20 October, Civils Expo sits alongside Timber Expo, the Build Show, the Surface and Materials Show, Energy 2016, Plant & Machinery Live, HVAC 2016, Smart Buildings 2016 and Grand Designs Live as part of UK Construction Week. For more information or to get your free ticket to attend the show, please visit www.civilexpo.co.uk or follow @civilsandbuild on Twitter.

UK’S Biggest Furniture Event Of The Year - The January Furniture Show The UK’s number one furniture and furnishings event, the January Furniture Show (JFS), is set to be over 10% bigger and better for 2017. Hosting another strong line up of over 450 exhibitors, JFS is the place to be for retailers, buyers and commercial specifiers who are looking for the latest products and developments in the industry. New sign ups Ekornes and Malini will join big names such as Parker Knoll, Sherborne, Ashley Manor Upholstery, Libra, Buoyant and Ercol showcasing everything from cabinet furniture, upholstery and beds to soft furnishings and giftware. The four-day show runs from Sunday 22 until Wednesday 25 January across five halls at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC). Visitors will get the chance to see all the latest innovations, collections, offers, promotions and sales

support which will be key to business success over the next 12 months. Laraine Janes of the January Furniture Show said: “We had 85% of 2016 exhibitors sign up for next year on the spot which shows what a success it really is and how integral it is to the furniture and furnishings business. We have had to increase hall space by 10% to accommodate the new enquiries and, laying strong foundations for the future of the show, we have just signed a seven year deal with the NEC.” The new long term deal with the NEC underlines the centre’s confidence in the future of the show. And the seven year commitment from JFS cements its position as the UK’s biggest and best furniture and furnishings event with the NEC as its home.

Added Laraine: “The show is at the right venue at the right time of year for exhibitors to meet retail customers from across the UK. The transport links, countrywide connectivity, suitability and scale of the halls and the accessibility for exhibitors are why almost all the UK’s important trade events take place there. Last year saw changes to the NEC campus with the opening of Resorts World, and, adding another layer of nationwide connectivity will be the HS2 terminal opening at the NEC in 2023.” The next show will see Hall 5 as the major destination hall offering its strongest line up of commercial big hitters for years. Hall 4 boasts leading international cabinet brands while Hall 3 will be the place to visit for furnishing accessories. Hall 2 will be the centre for top end international contemporary furniture, while Hall 1 remains a destination hall for high end exclusive ranges.
