John Deere training helps 38 young apprentices graduate he latest group of talented young service technicians and parts personnel have successfully graduated from John Deere’s pioneering Ag Tech, Turf Tech and Parts Tech advanced apprenticeship programmes.

T

The 38-strong cohort passed the national scheme – provided by training provider ProVQ – and their achievements have been recognised at a special event held for them at the Crowne Plaza in Nottingham. John Deere dealer Ben Burgess saw success for two of its staff with James Skipper from Beeston in Norfolk winning

the Ag/Turf Tech Apprentice of the Year for 2021 while Madeleine Green from the company’s Oakham site in Rutland won the Parts Tech award. Both were presented with new Apple iPads as their prize by John Deere Apprentice Centre Manager James Haslam. Farol saw its Ag/Turf Tech apprentices Ciahran Quick from the company’s Shefford Woodlands dealership in Berkshire, and Henry Atkins from Midhurst in West Sussex, pick up the runner up prizes of a certificate and high street vouchers worth £250.

John Deere Branch Training Manager Allan Cochran said: “Our apprenticeship programme has been running for nearly three decades and was created because we saw the trend of fewer people coming into the industry. We needed to take steps to ensure that there was new talent to fill our business and dealer network. “That work is as relevant today as it was then. To see these fantastic individuals graduating from their courses and taking the next big step in their careers is incredibly rewarding. “Helping to give these young people their first step on the career ladder

St Andrews sunrise wins annual greenkeepers’ photographic competition

A

n early morning image of sunrise over the Castle Course at St Andrews Links has been proclaimed the winner of the 2021 BIGGA Annual Photographic Competition. Taken by Course Manager Jonathan Wood, the image shows the course bathed in early morning light, with greenkeepers working in the background and atmospheric Scottish skies overhead. 8

Jonathan said: “Working on a golf course, you get to see the most incredible sunrises and so my camera goes everywhere with me. It’s funny, I would change holes a lot because it was a good excuse to take my camera out and when I spotted that scene, I jumped out of the buggy and fired off a couple of shots. It was a good morning for it and I just knew it was going to be a good photo. “I have always had an interest in photography and from a mental health point of view, it’s certainly helped me over

the past two years. You don’t have to have a fancy camera, but it’s an excuse to go outside and you realise that in the bigger scheme of things we are quite small.” Jonathan is now a two-time winner of BIGGA’s annual photo competition, having been successful in 2014 with an image he took while course manager at Trevose in Cornwall. He wins a Nikon digital camera worth £365 and a framed print of his image, to be presented during the BIGGA Welcome Celebration at BTME 2022 in January.

From competition entries received throughout the year, 24 finalists were chosen and put up for public voting on BIGGA’s social media channels. Photographer Mike Hyde of Carefree Golf Photography also lent his expertise to the judging process. Mike explained why Jonathan’s photograph was the pick of the bunch. He said: “When I shoot, I try and create imagery that evokes emotion and this picture absolutely does that for me. It stirs a desire to get out and play golf, although I would probably rather be taking photographs in that light!” For the first time, entries into the competition were divided into three categories: Greenkeeping, Landscape and Wildlife.

Joe Simpson, Bunker raking shift at Ipswich GC

While Jonathan’s photograph won the Landscape category, Joe Simpson of Ipswich Golf Club won the Greenkeeping category and Laura Sayer-Hall of Wallasey Golf Club won the Wildlife category. Category winners all receive a £150 shopping voucher.

Twelve images were selected for the BIGGA 2022 desktop calendar, which is distributed with the January edition of Greenkeeper International, the monthly magazine for members of the British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA).

Scott McTaggart, course manager at Sandyhills Golf Club, Glasgow Andrew Wilson, deputy course manager at Whitecraigs Golf Club, Glasgow The BIGGA delegation to the GCSAA Conference & Show is considered one of the leading opportunities available to greenkeepers and the experience can be truly career-defining. For Allan Duncan, the head greenkeeper at Broomieknowe Golf Club, a place on the delegation is reward for nine years of investment in his own professional development. Allan had been a greenkeeper for 20 years but had never really attempted to progress his career, until he considered the future he could provide for his children. Allan explained: “I took stock of my career nine years ago. I had two young sons and I realised that in 10 years they would be learning to drive and going to university. The position I was in at the time wouldn’t have enabled me to support them, so I went to my boss and asked for a pay rise, but the club couldn’t afford it. I decided to go back to college and get myself the qualifications I needed to progress my career and since then I’ve done so many amazing things.

“To say that I am excited is an understatement. I come from a smallish town in Scotland and I was in the same job for 20 years, just going through the motions. Now, a few years later, everything has changed and I am overwhelmed to have been selected for the delegation. I don’t think it’s ever too late if you apply yourself and I hope I can inspire others to do the same.” Bernhard & Company Director Steven Nixon said: “We are very proud to have been supporting the delegation for so many years. The quality of applicants is always incredible, making the selection process quite challenging. We are looking forward to taking our 200th delegate in 2022 and offering the 10 successful candidates a fantastic career opportunity.” The BIGGA Delegation to the GCSAA Conference & Show is just one of countless exclusive opportunities that have been specifically tailored to help BIGGA members achieve their professional ambitions and fulfil our overarching ambition of raising standards of greenkeeping in the UK and creating a stronger and more dynamic For more information about BIGGA, head to www.bigga.org.uk

AERATION, IRRIGATION & DRAINAGE

Why aerate the soil? By deep aeration specialists Terrain Aeration

“If we want our plants to thrive, we must ensure that the air can penetrate the soil and we do this by aeration.”

GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | January 2022

AERATION, IRRIGATION & DRAINAGE

W

hy should we aerate? To answer this, we need to acknowledge that the roots of all plants need to respire. They do not breathe as we do, but they need to absorb oxygen and emit Carbon Dioxide. Roots can only thrive where this exchange is possible, so where do the roots get their oxygen?. The oxygen is in the air in the air spaces between the soil particles and this is why gardeners always aim to produce a soil with a crumb texture, which has air spaces between the crumbs. It follows that if these air spaces are closed, the roots have little or no oxygen to draw upon and will tend to die back away from such areas. The soil loses airspaces by compacting whether under its own weight or because it has been loaded by passing feet, vehicles or materials stored on it. Even specialist grass machinery will eventually cause a compact layer to form to the detriment of the soil structure. Healthy plants need healthy roots and roots that are dying back from an area that has become compacted and is without air spaces cannot thrive. Healthy plants also need a thriving community of living things, be they bacteria, worms, insects, fungi or any other type of fauna and flora which all work to make soil nutrients available to the plant roots. This community needs oxygen to sustain it and without oxygen in the soil, the soil will sour and begin to stink as anaerobic bacteria which can live without oxygen take over and they produce Hydrogen Sulphide gas from their specialised respiration. Hydrogen sulphide is nasty stuff and kills plant roots rapidly. If we want our plants to thrive, we must ensure that the air can penetrate the soil and we do this by aeration. So, to answer the question directly: we aerate to put air into the soil for the roots to use to respire and to keep the soil sweet. Aeration also allows water to percolate into the ground surface

13

AERATION, IRRIGATION & DRAINAGE

and a soil that allows free percolation is unlikely to remain waterlogged for very long and so will have a firm dryish surface soon after heavy rain. When to aerate? Some people would have us aerate whenever the mower has passed over the turf, but that could be considered excessive. Aerate whenever there are signs of poor grass growth or surface water accumulation, but you must be able to get the aerating instrument be it tine, prong, knife or probe into the surface and out again without damaging the surface or the machine. Clay soils bake hard in dry conditions and aeration contributes to soil water depletion in very dry conditions, so aeration is best done in

14

all but the hot summer months. How to aerate? There are a lot of different techniques available starting with a good old garden fork pushed into a lawn, through spikes the size of smallish nails on a pedestrian pushed roller through large spikes that reach 150mm into the surface to slitting knives some of which simply slice into the turf to others that slice the turf and shake it. We then enter the world of deeper aeration where the Vertidrain can penetrate to about 400mm with solid probes but here we are beginning to have to use rather heavy equipment with the biggest vertidrain unit weighing in at well over a tonne plus a substantial tractor to tow and power it.

To go deeper the air injection technique is used to lift and fracture the soil profile. The number of available machines reaching 450 to 500 mm is quite large RobinDagger Air2go, Terraspade, etc with deeper aeration to 1-metre depth being available from the Terrain Aeration Terralift machine. Terrain Aeration specialises in deep penetration aeration to a depth of one metre where a blast of compressed air fractures the soil, creating fissures that allow drainage and oxygen to the roots of the grass or trees. From our extensive range of aeration equipment that cleans and purifies to the breath-taking water displays created by Europe’s largest range of water fountains, Heathland Group makes water come alive! Ponds, lakes, reservoirs, fisheries, and waterways are our business. Offering an elite range of water fountains, lake and reservoir aerators, pond and lake dyes and algae treatments, across the UK and Europe for supply only or supply and installation. We have over 30 years combined knowledge and experience in the management of lakes ponds and reservoirs, both large and small.

Recent Case Study - SolarAir Solar Powered Diffused Aerator A domestic client in Yeovil, Somerset contacted Heathland Group in April 2021. The customer lives on

“ “We have over 30 years combined knowledge and experience in the management of lakes ponds and reservoirs, both large and small.” 16

a farm with a large pond/lake and wanted to improve the pond water quality. Accelerated Blanketweed and Duckweed growth were beginning to degrade the water quality. Duckweed has small, rounded leaves, floats on the water surface and looks like young cress. This aquatic weed rapidly grows, quickly covering any water surface unless regularly cleared. The botanical name is L. minor, Lemna minuta and L. gibba. Duckweed can appear at any time of the year so a quick removal solution once identified is key to keeping surface water clear.

Manufacturing team discussed various suitable products to solve the aquatic weed issue. A solar-powered solution became the key requirement for this supply and installation because of the absence of power. The lake is completely off-grid, so a solar-powered diffused lake aeration system was required. Heathland SolarAir solar powered aerator range was the most suitable aerator from our vast product range. As the UK and Europe’s largest supplier of aeration solutions, Heathland Group were best placed to advise the ideal solution.

Heathland SolarAir Solar Powered Aerator

The SolarAir solar powered diffused lake aerator is the result of many years of research and development. These aerators provide a totally

off-grid solar aeration solution for the end-user. It’s ideal for all those remote locations where a power supply is not available. Our solar powered aerator is available with additional options such as online monitoring and management. Air is pumped through the diffuser membranes on the bed of the waterbody breaking through the thermocline, reducing the effects of thermal stratification while also increasing the lake’s dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. Aeration keeps the water body moving discouraging aquatic weed growth and killing the existing weeds before they gain a foothold.

SolarAir Solar Powered Aerator Installation The client ordered a SolarAir 3600 2 diffuser system with a solar system voltage of 24vDC and airflow of 3.6 M3/H. The 2 diffusers have stainless steel bases and non-return valves. This product comes with 4 large solar panels 2m long each. The SolarAir

GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | January 2022

3600 can operate in a 0.5-1.5-acre lake at a depth of 1-2.5m. Solar ground mount assembly is included with the product along with a 24v battery. The battery is encased in a stainless-steel enclosure. The client added an additional Smart Bluetooth Connection to the lake aerator to set up and monitor the system.

Heathland Aquatic Water Treatment Application During the first visit, the Heathland aquatics team applied 1000kg of the exclusive Heathland Blanketweed Water Treatment. This treatment was applied professionally by hand from our company boat out in the lake. The aquatic water treatment was to help remove the Duckweed and Blanketweed.

Heathland Water Analysis Tests The client also ordered a full water analysis of the lake including

sediment samples, water samples and a bathymetric survey. A full water analysis is required before treatments are applied to stabilise water parameters, combat algae, and bind excess nutrients. Bathymetric surveys are performed to analyse the levels of silt on the bed of the water body. The client also ordered a Peridox treatment for the second visit. A water analysis was performed during the first visit to determine the volume of the Peridox product needed.

“ “These aerators provide a totally off-grid solar aeration solution for the end-user. It’s ideal for all those remote locations where a power supply is not available. “

SolarAir Additional Capacity The client was so delighted with the results they placed a further order to upgrade their SolarAir 3600 to the SolarAir 4800. This included a new pump and an extra diffuser. The SolarAir 4800 includes 3 diffusers with stainless steel bases. The system can now operate in a 1.5-2acre (previously 0.5-1.5 acre) lake at a depth of 1-2.5m.

Oase Professional Lake and Pond Water Treatments Range Peridox is part of the Oase Professional lake and pond water treatment range. This range can only be applied by approved professionals and is not available to the public. OASE PeriDox water treatment reduces blanketweed and parasites 18

in water bodies and removes harmful organisms, filamentous algae, and parasites. The Peridox treatment was applied to a 600m2 area of the water by the team during the second visit, determined after water analysis. The client is delighted with the end results, eradication of Blanketweed and Duckweed issues and increased water quality. AERATION, IRRIGATION & DRAINAGE

BOOSTER PUMPS FOR IRRIGATION izing of Pumping Systems for irrigation is not for guess work and to select well, needs many considerations to achieve optimum performance and efficiency.

this required a booster set meeting very high industry standards, to improve the distribution of water around the expansive course where the water was extracted from lake.

Head and flow are the main requirement for any system, however there is a lot of information required to get the best efficiency and reliability.

A Dual Booster Set was sized and selected, complete with 2 x 5.5kW vertical multistage pumps, motor mounted variable speed drives and bespoke control panel to Irritech specification, including back up fail-safe system via Digital Pressure Controllers. The pump set in a duty / assist configuration, will achieve a performance of 20m³/hr at 8.8 bar pressure.

S

Head is seen as the highest point of discharge from the pumps, but we need to understand the total amount of static head and other head losses in the system to define the Total Head. Pipework costs may push installers towards using less costly small-bore mains to the discharge points, only to undermine the long-term energy cost and system performance. Unfortunately, the friction loss within a small-bore irrigation system will demand more energy, escalating the running costs for energy, therefore the more flow the larger bore pipework is required, especially for the main distribution pipework. Other losses are found in any pipework system and should be accounted for when calculating the total head, sprinklers, irrigators, fittings, valves will have an identified head loss valve and by careful selection and design some of these losses can be reduced. Once the total head and flow has been determined the process of selecting the pumping system can begin, most facilities such as golf clubs, sports grounds, parks, large gardens will require a system using 2 or more pumps with a ‘jockey’ pump to cope with small fluctuations in pressure demands. The control of these pumps is via an electrical control system which will monitor the pressure with the discharge water main and will start the pumps as demand increases, so one pump may be required initially, but as demand increases an additional will be deployed to maintain pressure. 20

The control systems, maybe as simple as using mechanical pressure switches, to activate the motors via crude ‘direct online’ starting methods, however more commonly, variable speed drives are being used to match performance with demand giving better overall performance and economy. A reliable and efficient control system will have a myriad of additional built in protection features supplementary to the expected motor overload protection; dry running protection is essential to avoid damaging the pumps due lack of incoming water, equally under pressure protection may be provided which shuts the system down if there is a delivery main burst or unplanned discharge beyond normal planned flows occurs. Power supply is a very important consideration, ensuring that there is sufficient supply to meet the demand of a new system, while location of system is important trying balance the best location of the pump set to optimise the irrigation obligations but not too far from a main power supply to avoid escalating costs of larger power cabling to avoid voltage drop which will undermine the system. Recent examples of diverse booster pumps installations for irrigation show how different applications can be applied successfully.

Golf Course As part of a wider water management scheme on a Hertfordshire golf course,

Large Irrigation Schemes A large-scale system recently commissioned indicates the scale and sophistication that can be employed, which included a Dual 132kW Multistage Pumps with a 45kW jockey pump all on VSD control, a triple 30kW set with 5.5kW jockey pump, and 2 no. Single 55kW boosters each with an 11kW feeder pump, operating on a dual redundancy basis with mirrored PLC and software.

Football Stadium The booster set is used daily to water the main pitch at the bet365 stadium. The home of Stoke City FC, the bet365 stadium, as with all major sporting grounds, requires watering daily to keep their pitch in a premium condition. Searching for an efficient and economic product that could provide reliable irrigation with automatic control. The system, comprised of fixed and variable speed clean water multistage pumps, was designed and manufactured to provide both the flow and water pressure required for the football ground. Below, Adrian Barry, vice chairman at Sutton United Football Club, operating the SRC Ranger control system from his mobile phone. Jerry Anderson, director at Agripower, comments: “We were given a conditional order in May 2021 as the club edged towards promotion and remained on stand-by with a view to removing the existing 3G pitch and replacing it with a hybrid alternative in the narrow window between seasons. “Once the club had confirmation of its promotion to the Football League we started immediately, deploying a five strong-team working full-time between the end of May until early August. It was a quick turnaround!” Agripower installed a hybrid pitch system which comprised of high-grade natural grass. Once the old system had been removed, the pitch was rebuilt with a hybrid carpet over a base rootzone, with the carpet infilled with a similar rootzone before seeding. Supporting the hybrid pitch was a comprehensive Toro irrigation system, which comprised of a network of 350m of ring main pipework, 200m of lateral GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | January 2022

It’s particularly useful for high-impact areas such as the goalmouth or when clubs like to slick-up the playing surface at half time. “The Toro irrigation system is very good and we particularly like the fact that the

Infinity sprinklers are top-serviceable, minimising disruption to the hybrid carpet. We have also been impressed with the on-site support from Toro distributor, Reesink Turfcare, who were on-hand throughout the entire project.” The new pitch not only validates Sutton United FC’s place within the Football League, but it enables the team to maximise playing time. A grass pitch can generally withstand three to six

hours of playing time, whilst its hybrid equivalent can deliver up to 18 hours of play. Adrian Barry, vice chairman at Sutton United Football Club, comments: “The team at Agripower did a tremendous job replacing our previous 3G surface with a grass pitch in a tight time frame such that we were able to host Football League matches in August. Having an excellent irrigation system is, of course, pivotal to the continued provision of an excellent playing surface and feedback from all users has been terrific in this regard. We thank everyone involved for their support and hard work as Sutton United embarks on this exciting new journey in its history. “ To find out more about the SRC Ranger control system and Toro irrigation range of sprinklers, call Reesink Turfcare on 01480 226800, email info@ reesinkturfcare.co.uk or visit www.reesinkturfcare.co.uk.

The No. 1 Leading Supplier of Anti-Slip on your Golf Course Billingham Golf Club is a picturesque Parklands course set in over 160 acres in the Northeast of England offering great access from the adjacent A19 and nearby A1. The course was originally designed and built in the 60’s with a signature hole playing across a pond, some undulating hills with varying ground levels and a wide variety of mature trees and wildlife all help to make Billingham a popular golfing destination. Because of the lay of the land steps for us are used to access the majority of tee boxes and like most golf clubs initially our steps were made up of recycled railway sleepers because of their hard wearing and longevity properties offered. But with no additional safety measures until more recent times we had to source something to help prevent slips. Here at Billingham, Health and Safety for our members and visitors is paramount and with any surface becoming slippery when wet particuarlily wood, we had to look at ways to remove any potential slipping hazards. Over the years the products we have tried and tested haven’t lasted the pace of time and soon required alternative replacements. So about 9 or 10 years ago after some

26

significant research we came across Gripclad which we purchased and tried and found to be the ideal replacement and can honestly say the original ones purchased are still in use today. We have found that they can be fitted with success to any surface even our old sleepers still in use, but as the older ones have rotted away we now replace them with new modern treated sleepers and new GripClad anti-slip treads if required. It won’t be much longer before we have GripClad on all our steps. If any organisation who are looking for a great anti-slip system are reading this then look no further and ask for a sample and see for yourself,” said John Dales Head Greenkeeper. Improving pitch quality

W

hen Niall Hazlehurst joined Warrington Wolves as Head of Grounds in February 2021, a quick trip into the equipment shed flagged the urgent need for an update to the club’s mower fleet. Recognising the number of elite sporting venues using mowers from INFINICUT®, Niall put forward a case that if the club wanted to be the best, they needed to invest in the best equipment! Convinced by both the superior cut quality and environmental credentials, the club purchased two 34” INFINICUT® FX mowers, along with an SM34 Rotary, earlier this year. “Having used INFINICUT® mowers in the past, it was fantastic to be able to explain just how many benefits they could bring to the quality of the pitch

32

and the environment as a whole” explains Niall. “Like a lot of clubs, we’re looking at ways of being greener so the fact we can reduce emissions and cost by switching to battery power was a big plus. However, the mowers also need to deliver on the agronomic front. The number of adjustable parameters on the INFINICUT’s and the millimetre precision you get when setting the height of cut has taken our pitch presentation from nil to the best it’s ever been!” Two 34” fixed head units are the primary mowers for pre-match cut but, in addition, the club decided to invest in the SM34 Rotary mower – delivered by dealers Turner Groundcare in August. The SM34 follows the same design philosophy as the rest of the INFINICUT® range, offering best in

class performance with an emphasis on a modern, clean power source. It takes its mode of traction from the INFINICUT® reel mower, renowned for its durability, paired with a deck designed to facilitate optimal airflow. “Now that we’re out of season, we’re using our SM34 in rotation with the 34” FX units to help to stand the plant up and thicken the sward. In season, it is used for the clean-up cut and thanks to the phenomenal suction, it doesn’t miss anything!” Niall continues, “In addition, if the weather is really poor on prep day and we’re at all concerned about dropping clippings, we will use the Rotary as this gives us an excellent quality of cut and finish. Having that versatility at our disposal is fantastic.” www.infinicut.com

The STM / SCAG range Leaf and debris clearance is high on the agenda this time of year, and the STM / SCAG range of equipment has proved as popular as ever – but the star this year has been the SCAG Windstorm, with impressive sales this season. And impressive is the right word to describe the specification of the machine as well: this is a stand-on unit, placing the operator on a stand at the back with a

knee-pad in front. This position gives an excellent all-round view for the user. The format is based on the SCAG V-Ride mower but, as opposed to a cutting deck has a massive cyclone blower on the front, capable of 6000 cfm output. The power unit is a 37HP Briggs Vanguard engine and the operator drives the machine with twin hand levers to twin rear drive wheels to give zero-turn

manoeuverability. Adjustable nozzle direction for the output completes the picture of a well-designed and highly effective leaf and debris clearance machine. Unlike other contractors that run large, heavy tractors and kit, Jamie attempts to keep the majority of his equipment relatively lightweight to minimise compaction and give him complete versatility. “Our new VertiQuake 2521 is flat out at the moment, in use on football pitches, rugby surfaces and golf fairways on a daily basis. The rotary action of the blades creates a wave motion which breaks through compacted ground down to depths of 10” - leaving very minimal disruption in its wake. We’ve had a lot of feedback from customers on the clean and tidy work the Verti-Quake has been doing, complementing the

routine aeration that will have taken place throughout the year.” “We’ve got such fantastic flexibility when it comes to completing aeration work, with the selection of VertiDrain’s, the Verti-Quake and OxyShot we now have at our disposal. As we head into the new year, we then have our Redexim SpeedSeed and a Rink DS800 topdresser to optimise new season growth and assist with spring renovations.” Jamie concludes, “With Redexim, we know what we’re going to get and that’s equipment that consistently delivers the desired result.” www.redexim.com 35

Leicester City FC chooses John Deere technology

B

ased at Leicester City Football Club’s new state-of-the-art training facility in Seagrave, north Leicestershire, the club’s Sports Turf Academy aims to inspire the next generation of sports turf students by offering an elite training environment, with access to the latest technology and expertise.

Machines include two GPS PrecisionSprayers based on the ProGator utility vehicle, 8000E and 2750E hybrid electric ride-on cylinder mowers, 7700A PrecisionCut cylinder and 7400A TerrainCut rotary ride-on mowers with TechControl display, a 1600T widearea rotary mower, X950R rear-collect lawn tractor and Z997R zero-turn rotaries, 2036R and 3038R compacts, and TE electric and XUV 855 plus 855 S4 Gators.

The Academy is built around four distinct pillars – Education & Training, Technical Services, Tournament Support and Trials & Research – to support the development, diversification and professionalisation of the sports turf industry.

Leicester City FC bought the first of the new environmentally friendly John Deere sprayers to be delivered to a non-golf customer in the UK, as part of the package agreement.

The 185-acre complex at Seagrave has 21 playing surfaces in total, including 14 full-size pitches – one indoors in the King Power Centre – and two show pitches for use in selected matches by the club’s Development Squad and Academy. There is also a 9-hole private golf course, for use by players and staff. These are now being maintained by a new fleet of 32 John Deere sprayers, mowers, compact tractors and Gator utility vehicles supplied by local dealer Farol Ltd at Hinckley, which will also be supported by the dealership’s brand new outlet at Newark.

36

“The Sports Turf Academy is designed to be a hub of innovation and professional development,” says John Ledwidge, Leicester City FC’s head of sports turf & grounds. “Our aim is to be world leaders in the training and education of the current and next generation of sports turf and grounds staff, while applying that learning to live working environments. As well as creating a world-class facility at our new training ground, we aspire to be world-class in the way we operate. “Adopting this new precision technology from John Deere will help in our aim to be as efficient and environmentally sustainable as possible in everything we do.

GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | January 2022

GROUNDS MAINTENANCE

There were many reasons for choosing the sprayer, the chief one being accuracy. It means we can apply exactly what is required without overspraying or overspending.” The training grounds and golf course are maintained to the highest standards by 18 pitch staff, 10 garden and landscaping staff and four greenkeepers, led by John Ledwidge and senior sports turf & grounds manager Callum Allsop. There are also four staff based in the well-equipped workshop, including two apprentices, with the machinery fleet monitored by workshop manager Chris Minton and his deputy Colin Barkby using the TurfKeeper web portal. “Knowing that we needed to make a very significant investment in new equipment, we went through a very robust, rigorous and transparent tender process,” says John. “We invited all the key players to demonstrate their latest, greatest and best machines, and the whole process ended up taking almost a year to complete – it was extremely thorough. “Aside from the basic transaction, it was just as important for us to be able

to establish a long-term relationship with the chosen supplier. It became clear after visiting John Deere’s UK HQ at Langar, where we were given a very comprehensive presentation by the company and the dealership, that their values and aspirations aligned very much with ours. “My deputy Callum, working closely with Chris, was instrumental in bringing all the tender documentation and figures together, looking particularly at machine usability and serviceability. All the grounds and workshop staff completed feedback forms, so everyone was invested in the process and contributed to the final decision. “The final choice was then presented to and approved by all the club’s Board of directors, including communications, finance, operations and the procurement team. All involved were impressed by the efforts and lengths that John Deere and Farol went to before the deal was signed – ultimately the decision was a very easy one for us to make.” www.deere.co.uk/en/index.html

CHESHIRE-based company is well on the way to becoming the first name that UK based Golf Course Managers and greens chairmen think of for all their artificial grass and netting requirements. years. His company is enjoying a boom following a rise in the number of golf clubs looking for a solution to the damage done to their grass during our wet and miserable winters. “Slippery pathways, unplayable tees and waterlogged practice hitting & putting areas can now be a thing of the past,” he explained. We sincerely believe we have a superb purpose built grass, tailor made for artificial winter tee mats. We also supply matting for artificial driving range areas, fairway

mats, artificial pathways, putting greens, Bunker lining & more recently our very popular Hybrid Golf grass. The Hybrid grass is perfect for the high usage & shaded areas which greenstaff have notoriously found difficult to enable any sort of consistent growth, especially during the Winter months. It has a netting base with artificial grass woven into the netting. This allows the greenstaff to overseed the area allowing natural growth through the netting holes.

After installing the County Tee Grass we have eliminated the immediate danger to members, who can now not only enjoy golf all year round, but can tee off from a fantastic winter tee area. “The members love them. Duncan Clarkson also added that County Sports Surfaces will once again be exhibiting at the BIGGA BTME at Harrogate from 25th Jan to 27th Jan 2022. BTME

BTME 2022 t was the middle of August and Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire had just finished hosting the English Open Amateur Championship, popularly known as the Brabazon Trophy, but Course Manager Simon Olver was already looking forward to his trip over to Harrogate the following January.

I

“I’m looking forward to catching up with some friends after a long couple of years, seeing some great education and just having a great few days,” said the 40-year-old, who moved down 40

to Yorkshire from Whitley Bay near Newcastle in late 2020. For Simon, as it will be for more than 5,000 professionals across golf, football, local authorities, schools and anywhere sports turf is maintained, the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME) is a once-a-year opportunity to share stories and strengthen bonds, while taking in some of the world’s best education for sports turf managers. Much has changed since the last BTME, which took place in January 2020.

After living with the collective strain of the coronavirus pandemic affecting daily life, a return to BTME will provide many turf professionals with a sense of normality that has been missing for two years. Multiple lockdowns followed by an unprecedented boom in popularity for the sport of golf, have meant that for many, personal development and the limitless benefits of networking – all of which add up to a better-maintained sports facility – have been neglected. BTME will be an opportunity to refocus on personal and professional growth.

“ With excitement building across the industry, exhibitors are well underway with their plans for the event. In attendance will be around 130 of the industry’s leading equipment and service providers, with machinery dealers, training centres and many others all in attendance.

“I’m personally really looking forward to BTME,” said Jim McKenzie MBE, who hosted the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor Resort in 2010. “I’m desperate to see the guys, some of whom I haven’t seen for nearly two years, and I’m really looking forward to catching up with old friends,

seeing new faces and networking within the industry.” BTME is a three-day trade show taking place from Tuesday 25 to Thursday 27 January 2022 at the Harrogate Convention Centre in North Yorkshire.

With excitement building across the industry, exhibitors are well underway with their plans for the event. Major announcements and product launches are a regular fixture of BTME, making it the place to be to discover the latest innovations that could revolutionise how groundskeepers manage their playing surfaces.

The Continue to Learn education programme begins a few days prior to BTME, on Sunday 23 January and provides an astonishing breadth of learning available not only to BIGGA members, but anyone working within sports turf maintenance. With speakers gathered from across the globe and talks from the most influential voices in the industry, it is a priceless opportunity to gain the knowledge that will enable greenkeepers and groundsmen to take their sports facility and their career to the next level. Ben O’Sullivan is course manager at North Middlesex Golf Club in north London. He said: “I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone and finding out how they got on through COVID times. I’m looking forward to seeing all the different brands of machinery and how everyone’s getting on, so I can’t wait to be there in January.” The Harrogate Convention Centre has

BIGGA has been working closely with the venue to implement coronavirus precautions that will ensure the safety all those in attendance. The organisers will continue to monitor and act on advice from the UK Government and the World Health

BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton said he is incredibly proud of how BIGGA, both its staff and the members, have overcome the challenges faced over the past two years, adding that he is excited for the community to reunite at BTME this January. Jim said: “I’m thrilled to see that bookings for Continue to Learn, visitor registrations and exhibitor stand sales are all going extremely well. It seems that our industry is really looking forward to reconnecting in Harrogate in January.” Early registration is encouraged for BTME as this will help reduce waiting times at the entrance to the exhibition. Grass seed excellence

D

LF Seeds pride themselves on consistently improving and setting the standard for grass seed excellence, and their mixtures for 2022 will be no different. A stop by stand 270 in the Red Zone at BTME, will give visitors the first chance to hear about the new sustainable and environmental solutions that will change the way that professional turf managers will tackle some of today’s biggest challenges. The shift in weather patterns combined with changing management models of maintenance and plant nutrition are largely believed to be the triggers for an increase in the occurrence of some

44

turf diseases, particularly the rise in reported instances of Brown Patch. Over the last two years, and utilising their global research network, DLF have been leading the field with a screening and field-testing programme for Brown Patch which has identified the strength and resilience of tetraploid varieties. The results of the study have therefore formed the foundation of a number of new formulations across the Johnsons Sports Seed fine turf and sports turf ranges – including one brand new mixture for 2022 which will be the first of its kind to offer proven Brown Patch tolerance for winter sports pitches. For golf, a number of popular mixtures have been reformulated including J Fairway

which features the new salt tolerant Esparina chewings fescue and J Rye Fairway which has been updated to include the new highly rated, perennial ryegrass Aniston. All of the changes will be outlined in the brand-new Johnsons Sports Seed brochure, which can be found on the stand alongside two new brochures dedicated to the recently expanded DLF Wildflower collections. In order to meet with the increasing demand for sustainability and conservation areas, a number of mixtures have been added to both the ProFlora native wildflower and Colour Boost high impact wildflower ranges. www.dlf.co.uk

tand 406 in the purple zone promises to be a showcase of equipment for all seasons as GKB Machines get set to return to BTME in 2022. Whether its aeration, scarification or overseeding on the agenda, solutions will be on show in the form of the Deep Tine Aerator (DTA), Sandfiller and Combiseeder - with the GKB Technical Team on hand to discuss these products and many more from their innovative golf and sports turf portfolio. The name speaks for itself with the GKB Deep Tine Aerator - efficiently and effectively aerating the ground down to depths of up to 400mm (16”) for optimal air and moisture movement. Four working widths are available between

1.2m and 2.6m, meaning there’s a model to suit most applications in and around the golf course and beyond. Quickly building a reputation for its build quality, the unique tine mounting system on the DTA allows for more tines per head and improves both the speed and efficiency when changing between sets. As the seasons change and thoughts move from moisture management to spring renovations, the Sandfiller will prove its worth as the true multitasker! The Sandfiller scarifies the surface down to depths of up to 40mm, removing organic matter and creating channels which are simultaneously filled with sand or a combination of sand and seed – maximising efficiency

and improving drainage and ground firmness in one single pass. If a dedicated unit is required that is capable of both seeding and overseeding, then the Combiseeder provides an accurate solution. The tried and trusted combination of two spiked rollers and two brushes create the optimal number of holes in the ground, allowing for precise seed distribution and maximised conditions for germination. With smaller models in the range ideal for work on golf greens, the Combiseeder is available in four working widths up to 2.4m making it a machine suited for greenkeepers, grounds managers and contractors alike. www.gkbmachines.com

Countering common turf diseases

U

nderstanding how carefully managed moisture levels can play a significant role in the reduction of some common turf diseases, Headland Amenity will be shining a spotlight on their range of water management products - including TeraFirm, DewCure and TriCure AD - at BTME 2022. The Headland technical team will be on hand to discuss this, alongside their full range of plant nutrition products for golf and sports turf on the Origin Amenity Solutions stand – Purple 424. Maintaining optimum water-soil balance in both wet and dry periods of the season is a key principle in the overall approach to retaining plant health. Terafirm is a soil penetrant formulated to improve the downward movement of water through the soil, helping to achieve a faster-draining, firmer and healthier surface. Its unique non-phytoxic formulation reduces the surface tension of water, minimising lateral water movement and maximising drainage. Terafirm also acts to quicken surface drying and open up pore space within the soil during dry down by accelerating natural soil contraction.

46

Through the formation of a water-resistant, rainfast coating on the plants surface, Headland’s DewCure™ has also demonstrated considerable success in reducing leaf surface moisture. With the activity of damaging foliar diseases like Microdochium nivale and Dollar Spot positively linked with conditions conducive to high leaf moisture, utilising DewCure™ to control dew and guttation fluid can help to suppress disease activity. Looking further ahead, TriCure AD is known as a highly effective wetting agent used to combat hydrophobic conditions on fine turf. With application rates adjustable to conditions, expectations and soil types, TriCure AD contains three separate soil surfactant technologies to counteract hydrophobicity on sand, soil and organic matter. As well as being effective in the recovery of drought damaged areas, TriCure AD is also a valuable tank-mix partner for a number of other Headland products.

RECONNECTING WITH VISITORS ONCE AGAIN ollowing their official rebrand in July 2021, Redexim will be returning to BTME 2022 to showcase equipment from across their sports turf and landscaping divisions. While a stop by stand Purple 432 will see a new name, the same technical team will be on hand to discuss some of the iconic machines from across their extensive portfolio – including the high-speed Verti-Drain 2519 and Redexim Multiseeder.

F

Thanks to its 1.9m working width and ability to accept a range of tine options, the Verti-Drain 2519 has proven its credentials as the ultimate in versatile, precision aeration. Reengineered to include a new drawrod system and an easy-to-adjust

48

heave lever, the 2519 offers a PTO speed of up to 540rpm – allowing it to cover almost 9000 sq.m per hour when spaced at 165mm. This highproductivity output has made it a popular choice with greenkeepers and grounds managers alike since it was officially launched at BTME two years ago. Also on the stand, and making its debut in Redexim red, will be the Multiseeder. The Multiseeder is perfectly suited for work on both fine turf and amenity areas and has gained a reputation for being one of the most accurate dimple seeders on the market. Two spiked rollers saturate the ground with up to 1890 holes per sq.m, creating the perfect dimple in which to

deliver the seed, brushed into the hole by a rear-mounted brush to ensure not just optimal soil contact but a clean and tidy finish. The ability to have the rollers fixed or floating means the Multiseeder takes undulating surfaces easily in its stride, and with three working widths of up to 2.1m, there’s a model to suit most applications. With machines spanning aeration, topdressing, overseeding, brushing and synthetic maintenance to name but a few, the Redexim team look forward to answering any technical questions and reconnecting with visitors, once again, in Harrogate. www.redexim.com/uk

Natural solutions to plant nutrition and soil management

A

s one of the most comprehensively researched organic fertiliser ranges available in today’s market, a stop by the Suståne stand at BTME 2022 is a must for anybody looking for natural solutions to plant nutrition and soil management. A particular product of interest for Greenkeepers will be Suståne’s BOLSTER® Liquid, with the technical team available to discuss this, and answer any questions across the three days, on stand Purple 430. BOLSTER® Liquid is a research-backed bio-stimulant, proven to help reduce both abiotic and biotic plant stress. It’s balanced formulation, including 5% Iron Chelate, 4% Humic Acid and 2% Seaweed Extract, is suited to a range of applications and has been shown to optimise conditions for seedling and turf establishment. By encouraging root growth and accelerating chlorophyll production, the plant is better prepared to cope with stress factors such as drought, adverse temperatures, parasitic nematodes and some turf diseases.

GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | January 2022

Also targeted at aiding the plant through periods of stress, particularly greens and tee maintenance or renovations, is Suståne Turf Revival® 6-2-4. Turf Revival® contains Suståne’s unique organic compost base - rich in humus and beneficial microbes – together with water soluble and slow-release sources of Nitrogen to enhance plant recovery without stimulating excessive yield. Ideal as a base granular feed for spring, it produces a quick green-up followed by six to eight weeks of uniform growth and long-lasting colour. Another product of note, particularly if a wet spring is on the cards, is Soil ReGen®. Soil ReGen® is a soil conditioner that amends the soil to reduce compaction – increasing water, air and nutrient filtration rates. Proven to improve permeability and establishment of seedlings in existing soils, ReGen® also comes into its own during construction and reclamation projects, to supply organic-rich nutrients to disturbed or depleted ground.

BTME

The home of progressive mowers fter being appointed as full-line distributors in March 2021, Vanmac will be returning to BTME 2022, with stand Red 269 the proud new home for Progressive Mowers. The Progressive range of trailed and mounted rotary mowers have a well-earned reputation for precise cut quality and unbeatable contour-following capabilities making them a popular choice for golf courses. Visitors can look forward to seeing both the TDR-X and ProFlex 120 models, alongside other machinery from the Vanmac golf and grounds collection.

A

The three independently floating decks of the Progressive TDR-X closely follow the contours of the ground, promising a quality cut without

50

scalping. Precision and efficiency go hand-in-hand, with a total cutting width of 3.2m and an easily adjustable cutting height range from 9.5mm to 84.5mm. Along with other machines in the range, the TDR-X takes advantage of Progressive’s Pro Lift-N-Turn™ technology, allowing the operator to temporarily raise the decks, with the PTO still engaged, to make turning easier and increase overall productivity. Equally as impressive, the Pro-Flex 120 trailed rotary five-deck mower is the ideal solution for maintaining rough and semi roughs to an exceptional standard. The flexible mower decks adjust fore/aft and left/right +/- 10º and up or down by +/-22º, while wings can be adjusted up by 10º and hitch

swivel 360º when working in more confined areas. This gives the operator the ability to reduce the cutting width from 3.0m down to 1.83m. The cutting height of between 25mm and 75mm is also quick and simple to adjust. Alongside Progressive, stand 269 will feature equipment from other franchises in the Vanmac portfolio including the Trilo S3, which continues to set the industry standard for vacuum sweepers and collectors. Compact and manoeuvrable, the S3 offers powerful suction and 3m3 hopper, together with a range of shaft options – brush, flail and verticutter - converting the collector into a versatile unit for year-round operation. www.vanmac.nl/en

SECOND WIEDENMANN XD IN 12 MONTHS TAKES TURFCARE SPECIALISTS’ TERRA SPIKE TOTAL TO FIVE orthern contractor, Turfcare Specialists based at Consett, County Durham, now own five Wiedenmann Terra Spike deep aerators. Their most recent , a Terra Spike XD8, came straight off the Wiedenmann stand at Saltex, to save on delivery miles. It now joins their existing XD8, two XP8s and one XF6.

N

With 35 years’ experience of pitch maintenance and renovation across all sporting codes in Durham, Cumbria and North Yorkshire, the second-generation family business has built a stellar reputation for best value solutions. Operations Director, Paul Charlton said: “We got our first XD in February 21, liked it so much we ordered our second. We are really feeling the benefits. It’s

52

fast, incredibly smooth and with few greasing points, on-going maintenance is minimal. Quality is first class; it saves us so much time. We can give clients less interruption to their play timetable, so everyone benefits. “Currently we’re focused on golf contracts. The marked upturn in golf bookings is for a variety of reasons; some courses just don’t have enough staff to cover the process while other clubs choose not to invest in their own machine, and that’s where we can come in… “If we use both the XDs typically, we’ll be doing 18 fairways in 3-4 days where previously with two Terra Spike XPs it was twice as long. Paired with our Kubota compact they also work on greens and fine turf.

“The XDs are very comfortable at depths of 250 mm -275 mm, and we use them for football, rugby, golf and cricket. But we’re hanging on to the XPs as they can reach 400 mm down which is still a popular requirement. The XF6 is the quickest machine around. As a business, in months ahead we can tailor machines we bring for individual client requirements.” Wiedenmann UK, Northern Sales Manager, Mike James, said: “The Charlton family and Turfcare Specialists have been loyal customers since the early 1990s. Their first machine was from the P-Series, they’ve followed the Terra Spike ever since. I knew they would like the XD8 because it combines speed with the ability to work at depth.” www.wiedenmann.co.uk

Shropshire FA Bolster ‘Power Up Your Grass Pitch’ Campaign with Campey Turf Care S

hropshire FA is ready to bolster the offering from the new ‘Power Up Your Grass Pitch’ campaign using the expertise and machinery of Campey Turf Care Systems. The new initiative from the Premier League, The FA, and the Government’s Football Foundation aims to revolutionise the state of grass football pitches in England. The mission set out by the Football Foundation is to improve over 7,000 grass pitches by 2024 and 20,000 by 2030 to ensure the 12 million grassroots footballers have great places to play. A significant part of this is reducing the 150,000 cancelled matches due to poor pitch quality last season, and at Shropshire FA, this role falls to Strategy, Facilities and Partnerships Lead Andy Weston. With over 20-years of experience in football administration, Andy is no stranger to the impact pitches can have. After seeing Campey in action at an open day, he knew they were prime candidates to push their pitch improvement efforts for 180 clubs in Shropshire forward. Jason Moody, Product Specialist for Campeys, has worked closely with Andy to ensure that the right balance of

GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | January 2022

equipment and back-up support was in place. “Campey has a track record of working with a number of other County FAs, and we did a demo day with them at one of our clubs, and they gave a run-through of the machinery they offer, what it does and gave some hands-on tips. We had several clubs come along, and the feedback was great, so we decided to make something more formal to showcase what they do and how it can improve pitches in our county. “High-quality pitches are vital to the game, and we are in a position now where the funding and opportunities are there to support the volunteers who work tirelessly week in and week out, and the expertise of Campey is really important to what we want to achieve. “The game can’t run without volunteers and particularly at grassroots level. You’re reliant on them, and it’s imperative that organisations like Campey are on hand to work with us to provide that support and knowledge on the ground. In these last 18 months, we have all spent a lot of time on Zoom calls. Still, in this instance, I don’t think you can beat being on the ground and hands-on with the equipment because any little snippets of information they can share with those grounds people is invaluable. I think even

the most experienced grounds people will benefit from having a conversation with Campey and listening to their experts. “As well as Jason from Campeys, we are also working with Pitch Advisor Kevin Duffield, so with all those different bodies involved, it is really helpful to the grounds teams up and down our county.” Teams in Shropshire range from AFC Telford United down the football pyramid to Sunday league outfits. The one thing they all have in common is the need for a good pitch, and through this initiative, Andy aims to make the whole of the county a better place to play football.

W

hen golf reopened after the lockdowns caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the sport experienced an unprecedented surge in popularity. BIGGA – the British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association – worked

56

alongside Sports Marketing Surveys and discovered that when golf courses opened, they hosted on average an extra 1,000 rounds of golf per month compared to 2019 figures. Those numbers amounted to 12 million more footsteps, 10,000 extra pitchmarks and 18,000 extra divots

on golf courses every month, with all these needing to be repaired or causing additional wear and tear. The consequence of golf’s annus mirabilis meant greenkeepers were stretched to the limit, squeezing in opportunities to undertake vital maintenance between tee times that were booked out from dawn until dusk.

TURF MANAGEMENT

Hearteningly, the message appears to have been received that a golf club is nothing without its golf course. While clubhouses and other facilities remained closed, as measures eased golf courses began to reopen and this brought into stark focus the central role each course plays in the success of its facility, and thus the importance of a venue’s greenkeeping team. Whether through furlough or redundancy, greenkeeping teams were reduced in number throughout the pandemic. But as the world returned to normal in the latter part of 2021, employers realised that the extra revenue they had gained through golf’s boom in playing numbers needed to be reinvested in the course if that wasn’t to soon become a bust. BIGGA’s recruitment pages saw an unprecedented demand, with a 75% increase in the number of greenkeeping vacancies listed on www.bigga.org.uk and in the association’s monthly magazine, Greenkeeper International. Proactive club managers now understand they need to invest in

staffing if they are to capitalise upon the surge in player numbers and retain them for the long-term, but BIGGA is also working hard to ensure that employers then invest in the development of their team members and provide competitive salaries and facilities that make the greenkeeping industry an attractive career opportunity. As engaged and educated staff put their learnings into practice on the course, the return on investment in professional development will push the course on even further, and this is becoming increasingly understood and appreciated. In return, turf managers are gaining a greater appreciation of ways in which they can contribute towards the success of the business by undertaking more sustainable practices, not just in GB&I but all over the world. These include: Chemical products are having their licences revoked and remaining products are costly, so any usage must be carefully considered.

TURF MANAGEMENT

The cost of utilities is rising exponentially and rather than utilising mains water, secure alternative water sources must be found, particularly in the south of England. The burning of petrol fuel is being called into question and costs will again continue to rise, with electronic machinery quickly being moved from the prototype stage to the active market. Discussions are also well underway as to whether robotic machinery can be used to plug the labour shortage being experienced in the turf industry. For a golf course to be sustainable – with the word being used in the holistic business sense, not the environmental management interpretation – then things need to change. An educated workforce that engages with industry-wide discussions and takes the opportunity to search out new and innovative practices is going to be key if a sports facility is to overcome the challenges we face in the coming century.

58

The R&A, the governing body for golf outside America, is well aware of this and has in the past few years undertaken the Golf Course 2030 roadmap, with a comprehensive range of research projects looking at the changes golf needs to implement if it is to overcome the pressures of a changing climate, legislation, economics and other factors. The fundamentals of turf management will always remain the same. Golfers want consistent putting

surfaces, level teeing areas and to find their golf ball if it goes into the rough. But over the coming years the way these are achieved is likely to change. With the world-leading education at their fingertips and the opportunity to share ideas across the greenkeeping community, BIGGA members are better placed than most to adapt and thrive on the golf courses of the future. ithin 48 hours of it being added to their fleet, a VStrong from GKB was put straight to work by Parkway Ground Maintenance, as the team looked to complete a busy cricket renovation season. Delivered in conjunction with two other GKB machines – a Deep Tine Aerator (DTA) 160 and a Combiseeder 120 - Managing Director Dean McDermott estimates that their VStrong 120 scarified in the region of 300 wickets this year! Parkway Ground Maintenance in the Midlands were formed in 2000 and look after a wide variety of sports surfaces, spanning both natural and synthetic turf. Their trio of new machines, delivered in June 2021 complements a large fleet of equipment, which already includes a number of solutions from GKB. “We’ve got an EcoDresser and Sandspreader from GKB, along with their QuickClean and Brush for artificial surfaces and, for us, it’s the build quality that keeps us coming back” explains Dean. “In our opinion, it is built better and stronger than equipment from any other manufacturer and, over the years, that quality of construction has remained consistent.” “Another big positive about the GKB range is how simple the

GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | January 2022

equipment is to use” adds Operator Tony Besent. “When it comes to scarifiers, over the years there aren’t many makes and models I haven’t tried, but the blade configuration of the VStrong makes it the most effective one I’ve used.” The GKB VStrong features a unique CombiRotor equipped with heavy duty steel blades which rotates against the direction of travel, accurately scarifying down to depths of 40mm. With renovation season at a close, the demand now turns to the DTA. “As we head towards the winter months, it’s going to be aeration on the agenda. Our DTA 160 is already on double figures since we’ve had it and is pretty much fully booked to conduct pre-winter work on a number of winter sports pitches in the area.” When temperatures begin to rise, Dean and his team are looking forward to utilising their brand-new CombiSeeder – the versatility set-up making it ideal for work on all types of surface. Dean concludes, “Because of the variety of work and tight schedules we have to work to, we need equipment that is reliable and that is backed up with fast support when required – and that’s exactly what we get with GKB.” www.gkbmachines.com
