The IQ dual-clutch F24/R24 gear box was chosen as it makes manoeuvring the tractor around the course whilst operating the equipment so easy. Another feature we really like is the Auto PTO function or the Headland Management System, it is brilliant for when we get to the end of the run with the aerator, we can lift the implement up, the PTO automatically cuts out, we can turn around then lower again and PTO restarts by itself. Brilliant for safety and avoiding damage or excess wear and tear on the implements themselves.”

Turf nutrition

Marathon® ALGAE fertiliser confirms its effectiveness

Thanks to its hybrid formulation and patented technology, Marathon® ALGAE fertiliser – developed by Olmix – provides perfect, long-term turf nutrition with significant action on soil microbial activity. It’s sure to win over greenkeepers and sports ground managers.

Nitrogen release comparable to fertilisers containing IBDU or urea formaldehyde

The XSER® complexation technology contained in Marathon® ALGAE organomineral fertiliser enables nitrogen release kinetics over 4 months, equivalent to those obtained with slow-release formulations containing isobutylidene diurea (IBDU) or methylene urea [Figure 1].

This feature of Marathon® ALGAE fertiliser means that it can be used to feed turf over the long term, with a technology that has a better environmental profile than chemical formulas.

As the nitrogen is released slowly, it does not cause the grass to grow too quickly, necessitating frequent mowing. The risk of loss through leaching is reduced, as is the risk of scorch to foliage and roots.

Encourage root development and grass density rather than growth

Progressive, balanced nutrition in the form of ammonium nitrogen rather than nitrate nitrogen enables grasses to develop a highly branched root system, and to establish their tillers more effectively [Photo opposite]. That’s why Marathon® ALGAE fertiliser promotes a high grass density per square metre for a thick, resistant turf.

Studies carried out in partnership with the university of Hohenheim in Germany have highlighted the increase in root biomass with Marathon® ALGAE compared with a nitrate-based control fertiliser: +50% after 100 days.

Fighting thatch building, the other action of Marathon® ALGAE

One of the factors causing deterioration in the quality of turfs is the accumulation of dead organic matter from mown grass residues. The formation of thatch blocks the circulation of water, air and nutrients to the roots and exposes the turf to fungal diseases. To prevent this build-up, it is necessary to stimulate the soil’s microbial activity so that it can break down this organic matter quickly.

At Amersfoort in the Netherlands, three years’ monitoring of two sports fields fertilised with Marathon® ALGAE demonstrated the effect of fertiliser

on accelerating the decomposition of organic matter [Figure 2].

As well as reducing the amount of thatch, this accelerated decomposition of organic matter is accompanied by the mineralisation of its nutrient compounds. This action releases more minerals, which are then available to feed the existing turf. On the two sport pitches monitored, the quantities of bioavailable nitrogen in the soil increased by 27 and 30 kg/ha respectively between year N and year N+3.

Fertilising golf courses and sports fields is a key factor in managing the quality of grassed areas. The choice of fertiliser to use is crucial, as it determines the intensity and regularity of the turf’s growth, its quality and its resistance to trampling and shearing. Marathon® ALGAE organo-mineral fertiliser and its patented XSER® technology combine the benefits of a slow-release fertiliser for gradual, long-lasting action, with the stimulation of the soil’s biological activity essential for maintaining conditions conducive to the development of high-quality turf.

Tewkesbury Park get the Break they need with Campey RootPruner

Protruding roots on fairways and approaches were causing mower damage and affecting play at Tewkesbury Park Golf Club, but the Campey RootPruner provided a clean and easy solution.

Removing roots meant excavating around the area, which would cause disruption and look unsightly. For Course Manager Paul Hathaway this was unacceptable

because it was at odds with his standards.

The golf resort was recently described by National Club Golfer as ‘a mini Gleneagles’ and is placed in the Golf World and National Clubs Golfer top 100 golf resorts in GB & Ireland. Keeping these standards on the 6554 yard, par 72 Deerpark course meant finding a solu-tion, and Paul found it in the RootPruner.

“We noticed the roots protruding through the surface of a few approaches and fairways, and these kept being caught by the mower, damaging the blades and putting the mower ‘off-cut’,” Paul explained.

“This was more noticeable during the drought we had last year. We tried to dig and cut them out, but the mess looked unsightly and didn’t stop the roots from

for any parkland golf course. It’s a machine that is so quick and easy to use, it will save you downtime and money on repairing mowers which are damaged from hitting tree roots, and also make the surface better from not having roots protruding through the surface.

coming back. I al-ways feel prevention is better than cure, so I decided to search for a machine to cut the roots near the canopy of the trees so we wouldn’t damage the health of the trees but stop the roots from encroaching into play.

“In the past, I have used an excavator to create a root break, but the disruption this caused wasn’t suitable to the standards we expect the course to be in, so we needed a machine that would create a root break but be efficient, neat and tidy.

“We were able to get around the entire course with ease and were very surprised how quick it was. The roots we went over have been removed, so we don’t have any protrud-ing the surface, and so far, we don’t have any new roots coming through, so I am hopeful this will continue.”

The RootPruner cuts roots up to 100mm in diameter with no clean-up, making it useable on the course with no worries of shutting holes through surface damage. It also has the ability to decompact tight, narrow areas with ease and includes a unique patented triple-reduction planetary gearbox for smooth, maximum torque drive to the rotor shaft. The RootPruner also features a factory set, torque limiting PTO shaft eliminating all shear bolts and spring clutches.

For a parkland course, it can be an invaluable machine. Paul heard about it from a club in the local area who have shared similar results, and seeing it on his property once was enough to convince him to purchase his own unit.

“Once we had the demo, we were very impressed with the smoothness, cleanness and size of the roots it would cut,” he said.

“I would definitely recommend the RootPruner for any parkland golf course. It’s a machine that is so quick and easy to use, it will save you downtime and money on repairing mow-ers which are damaged from hitting tree roots, and also make the surface better from not having roots protruding through the surface.”

Campey Brings Industry Leading Quality to Sage 2023

Campey Turf Care Systems has prepared a 16-strong machinery fleet for Sage 2023 that delivers industry-leading quality across every turf maintenance discipline, including aera-tion, top dressing, seeding and utility vehicles.

Across the 19th and 20 July 2023, the Sports & Grounds Expo will deliver two days of hands-on action and live demonstrations at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, and Campey’s fleet will be leading the way on performance and quality.

Established industry favourites such as the Campey Unirake, Dakota 310, and Shock-Wave 160 will be joined by the latest innovations including the new Bellonmit BM40 pro-fessional scarifier with fixed blade collection. The high-performance rotor guarantees ex-cellent work in all conditions, even when the cutting edge of the blade is not in optimal condition. In addition, the collector with hydraulic discharge on the ground allows the ma-terial removed from the ground to be collected in a single pass. The high ventilation cre-ated by the rotor allows it to be used also as a leaf vacuum.

Weighing less than 700kg and fitted with Cat I and Cat II hitch, the Campey TDS2 is de-signed to deliver a sub-surface shattering effect quickly and effectively with minimum sur-face

disturbance. This creates fissures for grass roots to grow into, allows excess water to drain and links up existing drainage, all without the need for external hydraulics or PTO.

Performance and versatility are huge attributes in the Campey range and feature in the Martin Lishman MC120 micro sprayer. The key aim of the Micro-Spray is to bring versatili-ty to the turf professionals’ armoury. A narrow footprint allows it to fit through most gate-ways and passageways to tackle hard-to-reach spraying areas.

With a 120-litre tank, the option of a 2.5m six nozzle or 3.5m eight nozzle three-section folding boom and the perfect combination of power, control and responsive handling, the Micro-Spray is suited to all types of sports grounds, golf courses and landscaping work.

Whether it’s all-electric mowing, brushing and weed management with the AllTrec, tree management with the Mini Rotoknife or site transport using the Clubcar 1500, Campey will have options for every turf professional at the Three Counties Showground. Campey’s team of product experts will complete the line up on stand, who can advise on the best solutions for your turf issues.

If aeration is the question, then GKB has the answer!

The benefits of a regular and effective aeration programme are well documented – the crucial role it has in optimising air and moisture movement, contributing to stronger root development and improved growth. Whether it is opening the upper surface, deeper penetration or aerating your artificial sports pitch - there’s a machine in the GKB portfolio to suit you.

When attention is required in the top layer, the Topair combines accurate aeration using GKB’s Evolvente® blades with an adjustable pressure roller. The unique shape and design of the Evolvente® blades ensures effective penetration of the top 160mm (6”), with minimal friction, heave or disruption to the surface. Four models of Topair are available, offering working widths from 1.2m up to the largest model, 2.4m, making it suitable for work on greens and fine turf, through to winter sports pitches and community grounds. All models come equipped with a hydraulically adjustable roller to level the surface and bring it back into play quicker – with water providing additional weight when and where required.

For more intensive operations, at depths of between 250mm (10”) and 400mm (16”), then the GKB Deep Tine Aerator (DTA) is the solution. Precision engineered and built for durability and strength, the GKB DTA is available in four working widths from 1.2m to 2.6m with the operational depths and heave angles of up to 25 degrees quick and simple to set and adjust. The unique tine-block system on the DTA, exclusive to GKB, allows for more tines per head optimising the efficiency of

the operation, whilst also reducing downtime by improving the speed of changing between sets.

The principle of opening the surface to improve play performance and permeability extends to those

maintaining artificial surfaces. The GKB Aerator picks up where routine brushing ends – with twin spiked rollers penetrating down to the base of the fibres to break through compaction, return the sand or rubber infill to the upper layers of the carpet and lever debris to the surface for convenient collection. The Aerator is available in three working widths up to 2m, with an option of either four, six or eight spiked rollers offering decompaction down to depths of 35mm. For heavily compacted surfaces, there is also the option of adding additional weight to the unit to maximise the penetration of the carbide teeth.

Optimise your water usage with T-T’s Hidro boost

Things have been heating up as of late – last summer the UK reached a record 40.3 °C; there were extended periods of drought declared in Southern parts of the country; and the Met Office forecast drier and drier summers for the foreseeable future.

With the possibility of hosepipe bans coming back into effect over the coming months and more people wanting to conserve water (not only for the environmental but also the current cost of living crisis) T-T Pumps Ltd has an efficient solution for groundskeepers and irrigators across all industries.

T-T’s Hidro Boost is a clean water pressurisation set that can be paired with variable speed drives (VSD) for optimal pumping performance as well as more economical use of resources.

VSDs are smart motor control systems that monitor the

FOR ESSENTIAL IRRIGATION YOU CAN RELY ON HIDRO BOOST RANGE

pressure of your water boosting system in real time, adjusting the motor speed to increase or decrease water pressure and keep it at a pre-set, consistent level.

Variable factors, such as high or low water reserve levels, can mean running your booster’s motor at a set speed – this can cause water waste, low pressure delivery, ineffective irrigation and pump damage due to dry-running. By making sure to only using the energy necessary to boost water at your desired rate, the VSD will optimise your water usage – benefitting the environment, the UK’s water supply, your expenditure and the longevity of your pumps.

Everything is nice and easy to set up and adjust, and my team are enjoying how smooth and quiet it is to operate.

New Verti-Drain® 2519 helps Preston North End in the race against ‘tine’!

“ AERATION, IRRIGATION & DRAINAGE

Ahigh speed Redexim VertiDrain® 2519 is delivering outstanding results for the team at Preston North End Football Club, as the team work to complete regular aeration in ever-tighter schedule windows. Currently in use at the club’s new first team training complex at Euxton, Head Groundsman Peter Ashworth says the ability to verti-drain two or three pitches in one day enables them to meet other maintenance deadlines whilst bringing multiple benefits to overall surface condition.

Peter and his team of six look after a total of nine pitches across two training ground sites and the Deepdale Stadium, who now all have the use of the new 2519 alongside their existing Redexim 7316 Verti-Drain®. “With one machine to operate across all three facilities, we we’re increasingly finding that everybody always needed to use it at the same time!” Peter explains. “I spoke to Greg

Cain at Cheshire Turf Machinery and asked to see the new Redexim machine and were instantly impressed with how quick it was. You could tell from that demonstration, and subsequent periods where we had the opportunity to use the 2519, how much of a difference it would make to the speed of our aeration work.”

The 2519 offers a PTO speed of up to 540rpm which allows it to cover almost 9000m2 per hour when spaced at 165mm. Not just offering high-productivity, the Verti-Drain® 2519 encompasses the very best in Redexim precision engineering to deliver durability and versatility – with a range of tine options capable of delivering effective aeration around the maintenance calendar.

“The first team will be using two or three of the pitches at the Euxton ground every day, so to keep them fit for play we’re mowing them before and after training which leaves little time for

anything else. Since we took delivery of the 2519 in January 2023, we’ve been able to factor in aerating a pitch or two amongst our other tasks, which keeps us in control of any compaction and ensures everything stays free draining, particularly during the wetter winter months.”

“Everything is nice and easy to set up and adjust, and my team are enjoying how smooth and quiet it is to operate.” Peter adds, “For me personally, the whole process has been really straightforward. Like many manufacturers, there were a few hold-ups caused by COVID, but we had brilliant support throughout from both Cheshire Turf Machinery and Redexim, who went the extra mile to help us with a loan machine to get us through a particularly challenging few weeks weather-wise whilst we waited. Now that our 2519 is here, life looks as though it will be much easier!”

The Long Reach Irrigator

Introducing Mawdsleys’ Long Reach Irrigator (LRi) - the solution for irrigating large areas with the convenience of a portable system that does not require machinery to move it.

Paired with a single-phase pump, the LRi can deliver up to 5,000 litres per hour. If you have access to three phase power, greater flowrates are achievable.

The LRi is fed from a pump (either submersible or booster pump) and does not require mains power to the irrigator.  By varying the diameter of the nozzle on the irrigation head, the throw of the irrigator can be controlled, from 14 meters up to 37 metres.

Mawdsleys can offer a turn-key solution – supplying the LRi along with the tanks, pumps and distribution hoses, with onsite set up and commissioning support.

Mawdsleys Pump Services, Unit C2, Kingsland Trading Estate,

The LRI Premier

The LRI Premier offers many of the advantages of a large irrigation gun, but only requires a standard water supply, enabling broad areas to be watered from one place. It therefore gives many of the benefits of a permanent underground system, without the need for expensive installation. It can be left to run through the night and is designed to be left unattended.

George Browns delivers new machinery fleet, as part of major investment at Crondon Park GC

Major, course-wide investment and redevelopment plans at Essex’s Crondon Park Golf Club have taken a big step forward thanks to the recent installation of a brandnew machinery fleet package from George Browns Limited. Everything from tractors, mowers, implements and accessories have been replaced with solutions from leading brands including Kubota and Baroness, to further raise course standards and achieve ambitions of a top-ranking status in the county.

Set within the 220-acre Crondon Park Estate, Managing Director Marlon Fox is the second generation of the Fox family now taking charge of the 18hole championship course, originally built by his father 35 years ago. “Since COVID, good machinery appears hard to come by with a lot of manufacturers not holding much in the way of stock”

he explains. “In our search, we spoke to Luke Farrow at George Browns Great Dunmow branch who, right from the start, understood our requirements and what we’re looking to achieve here, building us a package of machinery to reach that.”

Within that package were two RTV X1110 utility vehicles, a L2622 and L1552 compact tractor from Kubota, together with two Baroness LM315 greens mowers and a LM551 fairway mower.

“We had the demonstration units arrive and the greens team were very happy with everything, the quality of cut and finish we were seeing, we were very impressed with. Coming away from our previous brand naturally brought with it an element of trepidation but George Browns, Luke and Tim Mason in particular, have looked after us very well

at every stage of the process.”

Promised in May 2023, and delivered on time, the Crondon Park greens department then underwent full and comprehensive training on the new equipment. “The team were able to ask any questions and given all the support needed to get the very best out of the new fleet. Everyone is very happy, and we know we have the expertise of George Browns nearby or on the end of the phone if we need them.”

Marlon concludes, “We have a massive five-year plan, so having new machinery that is going to give us quality results, reliability and no age-related issues is setting us off on the right path to achieve our goals and deliver an unforgettable golfing experience!”

Thanks to its higher engine and hydraulic power, this is the most powerful compact loader Bobcat has ever made. The loader is also equipped with the industry-first Super Flow feature that increases auxiliary hydraulic flow to 159 l/min. The Super Flow feature typically increases productivity by 15-20% on comparable attachments and features a 5-coupling

connection block that allows the use of larger ¾-inch quick couplers and ¾-inch attachment hoses.

The machine is equipped with a proven Stage V-compliant 3.4 l Bobcat engine that produces 105 HP at 2600 rpm. This powerful machine is ideal for demanding forestry work and offers impressive performance and versatility in daily use.

Also represented on the Bobcat stand is the electrically powered, emissionfree and low-noise E19e mini-excavator, which offers a comparable performance level to its diesel-powered counterpart. With a width of just 98 cm, this electric model is easy to operate in tight spaces, making it ideal for tasks such as indoor or back yard demolition and other outdoor operations that require quiet, emission-free operation.

Bobcat is also presenting customized solutions for landscapers at the Demopark show. With the E60, E10e and E19e models in the excavator range and the T450 and T86 tracked loaders with appropriate attachments, Bobcat offers versatile machines specifically designed to meet landscaping needs.

Not sure about robotic mowers?

Here are five reasons why you need one!

Apicture-perfect lawn is hard to maintain, especially during the summer months.

Strict mowing regimes can sometimes leave people wishing there was someone or something to help, or even do it for them, especially when dealing with a

larger garden. This is where robotic mowers, such as the Cobra Mowbot, come in, making the task simple, easy, and hands-free!

Here are just five of the many reasons that robotic mowers are a great option for keeping lawns in great condition, with very little effort!

1. Installation is quick and simple

Setting up the Mowbot is a lot easier than people may think. All that needs to be done is a one-off installation of the electric parameters which simply involves laying the boundary wires around the edge of the lawn, under the turf. The below-turf installation

Looking after lawns can be hard work, especially in the summer, but with state-of-the-art robotic mowers, lawn care can be a breeze! Robotic mowers needn’t be seen as a ‘cheat’ or a lazy way to get a substandard cut –they are accurate, convenient and a great way to keep lawns healthy. Of course, Cobra has the right mower for everyone, from high-tech robotic mowers to traditional roller mowers, and everything in between.

means that the wires are invisible so won’t have any impact on planting schemes and designs. By using the included pegs, a boundary can be easily established, even around circular borders, keeping the Mowbot on track and stopping it from straying onto paths or over flowerbeds.

2. It will help maintain every inch of lawn

Lawn fanatics may be concerned that a robotic mower couldn’t possibly be as accurate as a human being, walking up and down, and up and down… and up and down…. However, Mowbots are incredibly accurate and precise in their application, creating a beautifully cut lawn. It knows which areas it has already cut, so there’s no need to worry about it using up its battery unnecessarily or damaging grass by going over the same spot. It can handle uneven terrain with ease too, so every patch of lawn will be seen to. In fact, it’s even healthier for the lawn, as it can be programmed to use a ‘little and often’ approach, which is a great way to maintain healthy lawns, but not always possible with manual mowers and busy lifestyles.

3. It can be controlled remotely

For the ultimate mowing convenience, the Mowbot can be controlled via Bluetooth connectivity so all that is needed to do is programme the frequency as desired – meaning gardens can be tended to from afar. Whether it’s a bi-weekly mow or multiple cuts a week, the Mowbot can be programmed as to how often it will tend to lawns - summer holidays don’t have to mean a neglected lawn! Everyone seems to be embracing smart tech in homes - why not the garden?!

4. Slopes? No problem!

It’s a common misconception that robotic mowers cannot be used on sloping lawns, but that is simply not the case. The Mowbot can effortlessly conquer slopes with an incline of up to 20 degrees, making it a safe and optimal option for sloping lawns.

5. Even large lawns are covered

For those with large areas of grass, the thought of mowing it every week during the summer to keep it at the right height can feel like a chore, and even those who enjoy mowing can

grow tired of it when there is so much to do. Robotic mowers free gardeners up to do what they enjoy most outside, whether that’s other gardening tasks, or simply sitting and enjoying the space. For those who see mowing as an arduous task, even better!

The Mowbot can cover 800m2 or 1200m2 of grass and a seven-inch cutting width, so it can be left to get on with the job, and when it is done, it will return to its charging station so it is ready and raring to go out again next time. It will also take itself back to the charging station when its battery is running low, or if the weather turns –how clever is that?!

A truly unique feature of the Mowbot is its variety of designs. Each model comes in a choice of colour, with the options of Midnight Black, Metallic Red, Metallic Green and Racing Green. THE FINEST QUALITY HORTICULTURAL PRODUCTS

lower bulbs are one of natures wonders, they are versatile, easy to grow, extremely popular, good for the environment and are a cost-effective way of adding interest to otherwise under used spaces.

The key is to select the right flower bulbs for the right place and project you have in mind.

Wildflower bulbs are perfect for creating safe havens for pollenating bees, butterflies, moths, and other endangered insects, whether regenerating areas in towns and villages, in woodland settings or small areas set aside for a preservation site, native varieties such as Anemone nemerosa (Wood Anemone), Allium urinum (Wild Garlic), Galanthus nivalis (Single snowdrop) and Hyacinthoides non scripta (English Bluebell) and Narcissus psuedonarcissus thrive in these environments.

While Naturalising Flower bulbs are the simple way to create drifts of intense colour for grassland areas, town and village approaches, roundabouts, verges, golf course and woodland walkways, the sight of daffodils swaying in the breeze is a sight to behold with many councils, landscapers and trusts opting to plant flower bulbs to attract visitors, generate land into areas of interest and for the well being of residents. The benefit of planting daffodils is that they can naturalise freely and will continue to flower for up to 30 years.

When considering planting flower bulbs in grass land or lawns you should plan carefully around any grass cutting programmes you have in place, select varieties that flower in the late winter and early spring periods, this will allow

time for the foliage to die back after flowering before cutting starts, this is essential to develop the bulbs for future seasons to come. Crocus, snowdrops, and Wild daffodils are perfect for these situations.

For areas of general interest for impact planting in spring beds, perennial borders, around shrubs, parks, and open spaces the options are wide and varied most flower bulbs will perform in these areas, alliums, hyacinths, narcissus, and tulips are ideal for creating vibrant displays, and companion planting in beds or under planting in containers will extend the period of interest from late winter into early summer.

ISEKI changes the game for Totternhoe FC

Totternhoe Football Club, based near Dunstable, Bedfordshire is a strong community club which has enjoyed many successes over the years and several of these have been witnessed by John Power aka ‘Mr Totternhoe’.

“I grew up in Totternhoe, I played all my football here, and I have been the Chairman for over 20 years now,” said John. “Basically, the club needed someone to look after the pitch, so I did it on an interim basis, and I’ve been stuck with the job ever since!”

John explained how he took advantage of funding from the Football Foundation as part of the Pitch Improvement Programme.

“We were very fortunate to gain funding and it has really helped us choose the right seed, fertiliser, and of course, machinery,” he said. “Before the season started, we sent in soil samples and lots of other information for them to make a prognosis and identify what we needed in terms of equipment and machinery. One of the machines the Football Foundation highly recommended was the ISEKI TM3267 compact tractor. I must say this tractor has been an absolute gamechanger.”

The ISEKI TM3267 compact tractor is a versatile 25hp diesel compact tractor with a F8/R8 mechanical or 3-range HST transmission. The ISO-mounted operator’s platform combined with ergonomically positioned controls ensures operator comfort during extended working periods. The 3-point linkage has a lift capacity of 600kg or 800kg when fitted with the highcapacity lift kit.

It also features, as standard, a rear-PTO, two double acting auxiliary valves, midPTO, weight frame and a choice of AG or Turf tyres. The TM3267 is available with an optional front loader.

John Power, Chairman of Totternhoe FC, claims that the club’s new ISEKI compact tractor has been an “absolute game-changer.”

“I like the fact that the tractor it is a fantastic looking bit of kit too, and it does the job with the lifting capacity - it can easily pick up the attachments and lower them down and the turning circle on it is fantastic.”

Further benefits include:

• Excellent performance coupled with high efficiency

• ISO mounted operator platform for reduced noise and vibration

• Power: 18.2 kW (24.4hp)

• Choice of standard suspension seat or optional Grammer suspension seat

“By trade, I’m a long-distance lorry driver so to be honest I don’t know a great deal about lawn mowers, or tractors, but I can tell you that this is a fantastic bit of kit which absolutely anyone could use.

“We mainly use the cutting deck with the tractor, and it is three times the size of the one we had before, which was

a ride-on mower. The ISEKI TM3267 is easy to manoeuvre, gives a fantastic cut every time, and it does the job three times quicker than the old mower. We also use a roller on it which gives the pitch a professional looking stripe.

“I like the fact that the tractor it is a fantastic looking bit of kit too, and it does the job with the lifting capacity - it can easily pick up the attachments and lower them down and the turning circle on it is fantastic.”

John purchased his ISEKI tractor through RT Machinery and was full of praise for the service he received.

“Before going ahead with the purchase, I spoke to Scott Reynolds, Area Sales Manager for RT Machinery, and he highly recommended the ISEKI tractor. He then delivered it and then set it all up.

“He even made sure he was available at 5:30pm on a Friday evening when we used it for the first time. He gave us great advice and talked us through everything.

“Ultimately, I would it recommend the ISEKI tractor to any establishment or sports club that needs first-class pitch maintenance.”

Make bunker maintenance easier with a Mantis tiller and attachments

ne of the greatest challenges for greenkeepers is bunker maintenance. Although bunkers represent a small part of the playing area they are an integral part of the golf course. Keeping them in shape can be labour intensive particularly after intense heat or heavy rain so a machine that can make that process easier is worth the investment.

The Mantis 7265 deluxe tiller is lightweight at 11kg and compact making it easy to carry around the course or put in the back of a buggy; while being designed to work away from your operators for maximum control. It’s built to withstand wear and tear with a powerful engine over tine design that optimises the weight placement. A kickstand, engine guard and sure grip handle come as standard.

The variable throttle lets you decide the speed of the tines to give you more control and the ability to adapt to the differing banks within the bunkers.

Get greens summer-ready with Turf care professionals, Wood Bay Turf Technologies

Leading manufacturer of golf, lawn bowling greens and other sports turf maintenance equipment, Wood Bay Turf Technologies, has been creating world-class turf maintenance equipment since 1987, and

has a range of products to help with all aspects of summer lawn maintenance.

It’s always recommended to start the season with a roll, as greens can be soft and uneven at this time of year. Rolling will help to smooth uneven spots and firm up the surface. The greensIRON

3900 golf greens roller, has been toprated by leading golf course managers to raise the standard of greens to incredibly high quality, while smoothing out any surface imperfections and creating a firm playing surface. The greensIRON golf turf roller has a light footprint, even lighter than a person

making a putt, so it will not make a mark as it rolls.

The machine has uniquely designed handlebars to allow for ease of steering, while its Hydro-Gear makes the transition from one direction to another very comfortable for even the least experienced operator. The roller’s rubber-tracked drive roller also provides superior climbing ability on the steepest, undulating greens and approaches.

The greensIRON 6200 Lawn Bowling Greens and Tennis Court Roller is based on the same design as the greensIRON 3900, but has wider rollers at 62” instead

of 39”. The greensIRON 6200 is ideally used for rolling lawn bowling greens and tennis courts to make them smoother and play faster, improving the turf surface and creating a consistent green speed.

Another key task is turf dethatching and thinning out thatch to clear out old, dead grass and other organic matter that has built up, but not broken down, over the autumn and winter months. Dethatching opens up the lawn surface to allow for improved nutrient and water intake. The Wood Bay fds9200 multipurpose turf dethatchers are lightweight, flexible and responsive, and are engineered

DLF delivers carnival of colour at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club

The green, green grass of Chipping Sodbury Golf Club in Bristol is now complimented with a carnival of colours including reds, pinks and purples thanks to the introduction of wildflower seed from DLF. The project is now into its third year and was the brainchild of Deputy Head Greenkeeper Craig Swindells who, together with support from the membership, has successfully introduced 800sq.M of outstanding visual impact together with all-important food and habitat for pollinators and wildlife.

Craig has been at the 18-hole parkland course, situated on the outskirts of the Cotswolds, for the last 12 years and works as part of a greens team of seven

including one trainee and two member volunteers. He explains, “While the trees add great definition to the course, it means we’re very ‘green’ so I presented the idea of planting two new wildflower areas to the committee and they gave us their full support. One member in particular, Geoff McFarland, who shares my passion for ecology was generous enough to fund the project.”

The first seed went into the ground in May 2021 – a combination of Pro Flora 8, comprising of 80% grasses and 20% robust wild flowering species, and Colour Boost 1 (Carnival) for hight-impact annuals. “The weather hadn’t been kind up to that point, but we went from seed to full bloom in under two months and what a bloom we had! Bold bright colours and an abundance of bees and

butterflies enjoying the rich food source it provided. We had a wealth of lovely messages and members of the public coming in to have a look.”

“At the end of the first season, we cut back and hand-picked unwanted growth as and when we saw it. Year two we left the areas alone and found we achieved great uptake with the perennials and, as you’d expect, fewer annuals though some did self-seed. It still looked good but like most plants, struggled with the ground being so dry through the summer of 2022. Now, we’re going into year three and we’re overseeding again, this time with Colour Boost’s Biodiversity mix to introduce a wide range of flowering varieties.”

Orlando muni reports continued strong performance – even after hurricanes – from Capillary Bunkers

The payback to the city was pretty obvious, and the improvements in playability that would follow were also a big issue. So we started the project in 2017, working with Benson Construction, a Georgia-based contractor. It took three months to install the liner in all the bunkers.

GOLF COURSES
GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | July/August 2023 40

Opened in 1924, Dubsdread in Orlando is the oldest public course in Central Florida. Formerly the site of the Orlando Golf Open, it played host to great names such as Hogan and Snead. The course was rebuilt by architect Mike Dasher in 2007/8, and its bunkers were reconstructed at the same time, with new sub-surface drainage lines, but no liners.

Superintendent Alan Lichter says it became clear to him fairly quickly that those bunkers would not stand up to the amount of play the busy course receives, especially in Florida summers, where signficant rains are an everyday occurrence.

“The bunkers just kept washing out all the time,” he says. “So we started talking about bunker liners in about 2012, and did a demonstration project on our chipping green bunker using a liner from a company that later went bust. So we started looking at the alternatives, and that’s when I came across Capillary.”

Installing liners across the golf course was a significant investment for a municipal course, so Lichter began tracking the amount of time it took to fix the bunkers

after rain events. “It wasn’t pretty, and that convinced the powers that be at the city that it was a good investment,” he explains. “The payback to the city was pretty obvious, and the improvements in playability that would follow were also a big issue. So we started the project in 2017, working with Benson Construction, a Georgia-based contractor. It took three months to install the liner in all the bunkers.

Six years on from the installation and Lichter is still extremely happy with the performance of his bunkers. “I love them,” he says. “They are still draining as they were the first day. We had seven tenths of an inch of rain last night, there’s no water in the bunkers.”

Given the extremes of the Florida climate, Lichter’s bunkers have had to face up to some pretty severe weather – and he says they have come through with colours still flying. Even after Hurricane Ian dumped eleven inches of rain on Dubsdread last year, the Capillary Bunkers still performed. “It took one person – me! – about twelve houtrs to fix the bunkers after Ian,” he says. “Before we installed the Capillary liner, it would have needed three guys working solidly for a week.”

Suståne programme gets top marks from Farleigh School!

More than a decade on from the switch to an organic feeding programme, the grounds team at Farleigh School in Hampshire are receiving more praise than ever before! Staff, parents and pupils alike have cited how surfaces across the 70-acre site are providing consistent presentation and performance, despite the challenging climatic conditions, which Grounds Manager and Sports Coach Shaun Crowley attributes to the reliable results from 18-1-8+Fe and 5-2-4+Fe from Suståne.

“While we weren’t initially pressured to explore the organic route, it was something my predecessor and I were keen on – not just for the environmental benefits but considering the safety element for the children and the flexibility it provided on application rates. We have a packed schedule both during and between term-times so getting feed down without pupils around was challenging” explains Shaun, who has been Sports Coach at Farleigh School since 2011 and took over the role of Grounds Manager three years ago. “Russell Riley from Suståne came in 12 years ago and it became clear that as long as we could catch a bit of favourable weather, we would be able to apply the product more flexibly which has been a great benefit ever since.”

Starting on the cricket squares, before finding uses on the outfields and lawned areas, Shaun and his team of five have found the combination of 18-1-8+Fe and 5-2-4+Fe delivers exactly what they need – namely a kickstart in spring, followed by consistent health, colour and growth without

flushes. “We’ll apply the 18-1-8+Fe when the temperatures rise, ideally March or April, to get the cricket surfaces ready for the summer season. We’ll then carry out three to four applications of the 5-2-4+Fe annually which we see as a ‘maintainer’, again on our cricket squares and on our Headmaster’s lawn area.”

Suståne 18-1-8+Fe is a two-part blend combining Suståne organic with urea nitrogen for enhanced and long-lasting colour, ideal for fine turf and sports turf applications, lawns and landscaping. Combining four forms of Nitrogen, including three types of slow-release, 18-1-8+Fe provides economical results over a 12-16 week period. 5-2-4+Fe is the original Suståne formula, providing a mix of nutrients for greater root development, increased soil porosity and stability and even colour and growth. Fully compostable, 5-2-4+Fe has also demonstrated outstanding disease suppression on wide variety of turfgrass diseases, including Red Thread, in trials.

“We know what we need from the Suståne products, we know when and where to apply them, and we know that they work. Russell is also a great person to have on the end of the phone. He pops in to make sure we’re on track and has given us some great advice for improving growth on some of our more problematic heavy-clay areas.” Shaun concludes, “I know it’s a phrase that gets used a lot, but these Suståne fertilisers do exactly what they say on the tin!”

It’s J Premier Wicket time and again for Willow Turf Care

When it comes to a cricket pitch, there’s not much that Richie Woodmason, owner of Willow Turf Care, doesn’t know about themwhether it’s playing on them or maintaining them! One thing he is certain of, is that when he needs a grass seed that is going to germinate quickly and deliver hard-wearing results capable of withstanding the demands of the modern season, he turns to Johnsons Sports Seed. Following his own extensive research, it’s Johnsons J Premier Wicket that ticks all the boxes for Richie, seeing it employed on 41 of the 42 renovations he completed last season.

After moving to Australia to play cricket, Richie became involved in the grounds maintenance at the Perth club, swiftly taking on the role of Head Groundsman. On his return to the UK, he then adopted a similar role at his home club before a return trip to Oz saw him gain further experience of management in warmer climes. Back again, and positions at Gloucestershire Country Cricket Club and Trent Bridge were held, alongside the establishment of Willow Turf Care – conducting end of season renovations for facilities in and around the Gloucestershire area.

It was during his time at Trent Bridge that Richie took it upon himself to conduct some trials to establish the germination of various mixtures and assess the performance of various cultivars. He explains, “When we were conducting repairs, I’d line up four or five different mixtures and then look at things like the speed of germination, coverage and plant strength, and found that in our attempts to get a wicket back in six or eight weeks, that J Premier Wicket repeatedly outperformed the others.”

This knowledge has served Richie well, since he went full time with Willow Turf Care in March 2021. “I was armed with my go-to grass seed and found that, as new clients came on

board, they were happy to take my recommendation. I’m now Head Groundsman at seven clubs and use J Premier Wicket at all of these, along with the numerous other sites at which I’m contracted. It continues to offer brilliant wear tolerance, disease resistance and coped well with the challenges of the hot and dry weather last summer.”

J Premier Wicket is formulated from four top-rated perennial rye cultivars that deliver proven, reliable performance and outstanding camera appeal. “We used it on all of our 42 square renovations except one last year, with the other one also using seed from another DLF brand, and couldn’t fault the results.” He adds, “Time is becoming the most important commodity due to the expectations on county club grounds staff. This means that finding something that works well, and works quickly, is crucial. For me, the J Premier Wicket mix backed up with fantastic technical support from DLF’s Ian Barnett and priced as it is, makes it unrivalled.”

R1 and R9 from OAS overcomes the small green, high wear challenge at Errol Bowling Club

Where most bowling greens benefit from the flexibility of changing heads to spread the wear, the small green at Errol Bowling Club in Perth offers Greenkeeper Graham Craig no such luxury! It’s down to the resilience and recovery of R1 and R9 seed mixtures from Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS), that despite the high wear and challenges of long dry spells of weather that the green is looking and playing better than ever.

OAS brings together four leading industry names - Rigby Taylor, Headland Amenity, Symbio and TurfKeeper. The group benefits from Rigby Taylor’s marketleading ‘R’ Range grass seed being added to their portfolio.

On his retirement from running his own thatching supply business, Graham took on the role of Greenkeeper seven years ago

– at which time the decision was also made to bring more of the green maintenance in-house. “While the two jobs may appear contrasting, there were some principles of working with the water reed grasses that I could apply to operations here at the club, and when I needed advice on things, I called upon contacts such as Andy Menmuir from OAS who has helped me a great deal over the years to tackle the challenges of our high wear surface.”

The green, at just 1000m2, is tasked with hosting friendlies and league games so to give Graham and the club the best chance of withstanding such traffic, Andy suggested a combination of R1 and R9 seed from the Rigby Taylor fine turf range. “We’ve used this combination for the last four years” Graham explains, “with R1 oversown on the full green, and then a mix of R1 and R9 used for additional strength on the heads.”

44 GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | July/August 2023 TURF MANAGEMENT

R9 is a fast-establishing, 100% ultrafine perennial ryegrass blend of four dwarf PRG cultivars – hard wearing, with fineness of leaf, high shoot density and a tolerance for close mowing making it ideal for fine turf applications. “I apply R9 to the heads, oversown into core holes and then dressed which gives us outstanding establishment and germination. The initial burst of growth shoots up like a forest of fir trees and is brilliant for filling in any bare areas. Longer term, it stands up well to the wear.”

“Andy also plans out our summer and winter-feeding programmes, in particular working with me to keep on top of moss which is a big issue for a lot of greens and saps the run out of the bowl.” He concludes, “I am very proud to say I have zero moss on the green at the moment thanks to the OAS plan, in fact – as a player myself travelling round and visiting lots of other greens – I’d say ours is looking and playing incredibly well.”

airter® the sports turf care of the future with active aerification

Unique in the world, the airter® loosens the turf layers homogeneously from 8 cm to a depth of more than 24 cmwith adjustable compressed air and in one continuous operation. 14 specially developed injection lances with different types of nozzles inject up to one million litres of air per working process into the ground of a football pitch. With regard to water infiltration, an improvement can be measured immediately on the treated surfaces. Even football pitches that tend to become waterlogged due to an unfavourable structural quality in terms of material selection and grain size distribution; soil properties as well as an unsuitable choice of substrate could be “defused” by working with the airter® with 2 to 9 bars of air pressure.

The airter as a maintenance machine can sustainably and extremely loosen

strongly compacted sports turf soils with compressed air. It reaches all rooted areas and loosens the turf base layer there horizontally and homogeneously. These are the facts:

- Proven soil loosening of the turf base layer of at least 30%, the soil loosening lasts up to 4 weeks

- At the same time a 23% increase in lawn clippings was measured

- As well as up to 48% better water drainage in the soil

- Also the unwanted grubs (May and June beetles) and the Tipula larvae can be controlled

- Effectively - with the airter and biologically with compressed air to 100%.

- The oxygen from the aeration provides stronger roots and vital plant growth

Empowering Sports Turf

Combating summer stress in turfgrass

Kelly-Marie Clack,

Turfgrass is subjected more frequently to environmental extremes including heat, drought or excessive rainfall and humidity which can impact on surface performance. When we experience excessive temperatures over a period of time photosynthesis reduces and the plant cannot produce the energy it requires for optimum growth. As turfgrass managers we aim to produce consistent and well-groomed surfaces that look exceptional but most importantly perform. The basic management practises we carry out can also have adverse effects on the quality of the turfgrass. It is the combination of these mechanical stresses and environmental stresses with will lead to the decline of turf health and surface performance.

What can we do to reduce summer stress on turfgrass?

1. Increase height of cut – it’s not all about the speed. Surfaces that are true and smooth perform well and look good. At low HOC the turf is more likely to wilt leading to uneven surfaces. Hand cut if possible and mow only when required.

2. Irrigate in the morning rather than early evening to avoid leaf wetness overnight. High humidity and leaf wetness is likely to lead to disease outbreaks.

3. Reduce rolling and only roll if conditions are conducive.

4. Avoid verticutting into the crown.

5. Reduce the amount of times per week you cut your perimeter (tidy up lap).

6. Only brush if required and not daily.

7. Use a pedestrian aerator such as a

procore to avoid heavy machinery on the surfaces.

8. Reduce thatch build up in the upper profile through good aeration and top dressing practices.

9. Accurate water management will reduce summer stress and hand watering areas with low moisture readings is essential. A surfactant should be used to reduce hydrophobicity in the soil and ensure moisture consistancy across the playing surface.

10. Appy Nitrogen little and often for optimum plant health and recovery from play. Potassium helps to maintain turgor pressure in the cells of the plant, resulting in a positive influence on drought tolerance.

11. Apply plant biostimulants; they contain substances and/or microorganisms whose function when applied to plants or the rhizosphere, is to stimulate natural processes to enhance/ benefit nutrient uptake, nutrient efficiency, tolerance to abiotic stress, and plant quality i.e. seaweed, carbonbased fertilisers, humic acid, fulvic acid, molasses.

12. Over seed with stress tolerant grass species such as fescue, bent and rye.

13. Fungicides form part of an Integrated Turf Management plan during high disease pressure situation. Monitor weather conditions and record disease

outbreaks so you can form an Integrated Pest Management program for your site.

Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS) comprises four market leading brands, Headland Amenity, Rigby Taylot, Symbio and Turfkeeper.com. We offer a range of products to help turfgrass cope and recover from summer stress. These include:

• Wetting agents to optimise soil moisture and turf health

• Biostimulants to improve tolerance to abiotic stresses and turf quality

• Nutrients to ensure healthy plants and recovery from play

• Organo-mineral fertiliser high in humic acid to promote a healthy soil and healthy plant.

A summer surfactant trial carried out at the OAS Turf, Science and Technology Research Centre showed excellent consistancy in soil moisture and prevention of localised dry patch when using OAS technology, during extreme drought conditions.

Full trial details are available in the OAS Throws trial report. Please ask for a copy.

Tournament Support Key Aspect of ProSport UK’s Foley Success at Open Championship Venues

There are few greater events in golf that match The Open. For many greenkeepers, it is the pinnacle of their careers, but to make it a success, tireless work goes on behind the scenes to have mowers ready for cutting each day.

Every Toro and John Deere mower used at Royal Liverpool will be ground by a Foley under the expert eye of ProSport UK’s Ian Robson. More than ever, speed and accuracy are crucial during a tournament, and it’s then the 633 ACCU-Pro with ACCUTouch 3 comes into its own.

The machines come with an automated computer system that provides a step-by-step tutorial for new technicians and a quicker setup and spin grind feature for the more experienced operators. You input the details of the unit you’re working on,

and it automatically spin or relief grinds to completion. Preprogrammed spin speeds, relief torque, and in-feeds are only a few of the features found in the ACCU-Touch 3 system that ensures efficiency and guarantees a quality grind with every use.

With Foley grinders at four Open Championship venues, Ian knows the importance of tournament support and the difference it makes. “An Open Championship is a unique event that calls for a team effort to make it a success,” Ian explains. “In my experience, it’s an intricately planned but high-pressure environment, and we’re there to make sure everything runs smoothly.

“We want to ensure every unit that goes on the course is at its best because the quality of cut is so important to turf health and the presentation. Using the ACCU-Pro 633 means we can turn around the units quickly and efficiently while always guaranteeing the best quality, and that is the key thing. Course conditions are the biggest variable during a tournament, and we can very easily adjust our grinding to suit what the course team needs.

“Royal Liverpool has had to wait because of the Open rota being put back a year and the redevelopment of the 17th hole, but the work they’ve put into hosting this Championship will be worth it, and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

Being England’s second oldest seaside links comes with a lot of history. Royal Liverpool was the second English course to host the Open Championship in 1897 and hosted the prestigious competition a further nine times before a 39-year gap between 1967 and 2006 when Tiger Woods won

the tournament before Rory McIlroy won his first eight years later in 2014.

The club has far from stood still since then, with their new 17th hole aiming to make a name for itself among golfs standout par-3s. Using the Dee Estuary as a backdrop, the well-guarded elevated green could well be a decision maker on who lifts the Claret Jug along with the redesigned over 600-yard par-5 18th.

OPEN QUALITY

Royal Liverpool is the second successive Open host to use Foley, following St Andrews, who used the American-made machines during the 150th Open. Customer support ranks highly at the home of golf, with the personal touch ranking as highly as the ability to provide solutions for Head of Maintenance Lani Togi.

“When it comes to buying machines, it’s not always about the cost of the item; it’s the personal side of things as well,” he said. “You buy from people, and we’ve worked with Ian for many years, and we know we can rely on his backup service.

“One of the biggest things that’s helped us get the results is the Borazon stone we have for the 673 bottom blade grinder. The new Toro E-Reels use a tungsten mixture that makes them very hard, and that stone really cuts it in well. That saves us a lot of problems because previously we would have had to sharpen them again, but now we get it done the first time around.”

Trilo transforms

the task of cut and collect for BCP Council

Following BCP Council’s declaration of a climate and ecology emergency in 2019, the decision was made to review the management of some green spaces across the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole areas. With a subsequent reduction in the cutting of some verges and open land, a Trilo S20 with its large

20m3 hopper capacity was brought in to increase productivity as the cut and collect operation expanded – taking not just large quantities of meadow grass in its stride but also assisting with leaf clearance during the winter months.

The versatile Trilo S20 was purchased in May 2022 by Simon Woodall, Team Operations Manager for BCP

Council and spearhead of a 30-strong team responsible for looking after all aspects of parks and housing grounds maintenance and landscape construction. “Our ecology programme included creating more grass meadows by leaving areas uncut to improve carbon sequestration and increase our biodiversity to support pollinators.

52 GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | July/August 2023 SPECIALIST MOWERS

We also reduced cutting on other green spaces such as verges to give plants a chance to flower, providing a valuable source of nectar and adding interest and colour to amenity areas” he explains.

“With this change to our cutting operation, we needed a machine that could handle large-scale cut and collect and found the Trilo was a perfect addition to our existing fleet of mountable cut and collect machines.”

The S20 is the largest capacity model in Trilo’s multi-purpose S-Line range which, when fitted with a flail shaft, offers a cutting width of 2.1m and powerful vacuum collection of the clippings to leave a clean finish after every pass.

Following the delivery by Hunt Forest Group, the S20 was put straight into operation between August and October. “The size of this unit has transformed the task of maintaining our meadow areas” Simon explains. “Not only does it cut and collect in its own right, but we can use it to support the smaller tractor mounted and ride on machines which can cut in tighter areas then tip

their arisings on the ground to be sucked up by the hose on the S20 – all done using the intuitive control box from the comfort of the cab. This in itself has increased productivity and reduced vehicle journeys to dispose of waste.”

“Through December and January we then used the S20 to assist with leaf collection within the larger parks in our area, and will certainly be using it more for this function in future.” He concludes, “With Trilo you’re also assured of excellent build quality and excellent service from specification right through to installation. It’s the full package and has already proven itself to be a fantastic investment.”

Kubota F-Series mowers deliver picture-postcard finish at Deighan’s Caravan Park

023 is a special year for Deighan’s Caravan Park, as the family-run business celebrate 30 years since the doors first opened on the 5-star resort close to Benone, Northern Ireland. Their first mower – installed by local dealers D.A.Forgie - was a Kubota and three decades on, it remains Kubota at the heart of site maintenance, with a fleet of Kubota F-Series mowers ensuring a picture-postcard start to every holiday.

2

Open every year from April to October, Deighan’s consists of static and touring caravan facilities managed and maintained by Thomas Deighan Jnr alongside a team of four. “From March, I will have two people on full-time grass cutting and strimming duties and when I say full-time, they’ll start at one end of the park at 9am on a Monday and will only just get to the other end of the site come 5pm on a Friday… then it’s time to start again!” explains Thomas. “We take massive pride in our grass areas. Keeping this well maintained gives the great first impression we’re looking for.”

Thomas currently has four mowers, including an F3890 and F391 from Kubota’s F-Series. The F3890 sets the benchmark for the out-front mower market, featuring a 38hp 4-cylinder engine that delivers unbeatable

productivity and impeccable cut quality. The F391 further enhances the F Series’ position as the professional’s choice for parks, open spaces and local authorities with a high output, maximum comfort philosophy. The newer, stage-V compliant model also offers power steering and an adjustable out-front deck making the F391 highly manoeuvrable – a feature praised by Thomas, “we can cut between the caravans and around the bollards at the back of the caravans with ease, leaving a finish that we can’t fault. Kubota is the only brand that has ever cut our grass and we would never use anything else.”

Together with an RTV-X1110 used to transport the team around the site, the latest delivery was a Kubota

M4063 tractor, fitted with turf tyres, installed in December 2021. “We decided to purchase a second tractor to complement our multi-use M5112 and already the M4063 has proven to be a great addition. With caravans

getting longer, we were having to use rubber matting to protect our turfed areas when we moved them around. With the turf tyres, we were able to use the M4063 to move a 41ft caravan a few weeks ago without the need for any protective matting – saving a significant amount of labour and time.”

He concludes, “Our relationship with the Kubota brand is longstanding, delivering reliable, well-built machinery backed up with brilliant service and support every time from D.A.Forgie. We look forward to continuing this partnership through our celebratory year and long into the future.”

INFINIApp loaded with new features for ultimate precision and consistency

Not content with just being the world’s only professional mower with Bluetooth connectivity, INFINICUT® have recently launched the latest version of their INFINIApp – designed to deliver unparalleled consistency in cut. Available for Android and iOS devices, among the new features is programmable automatic turn slow-down, reducing the mower to a percentage of walking speed for a more comfortable end of line turn.

The novel approach INFINICUT® have used to wirelessly programme their award-winning range of cylinder and rotary mowers offers several benefits. First and foremost, the app’s main purpose is consistency in cut. An

example is that the same desired clip rate can be set on several different mowers and maintained across all machines regardless of the operators preferred walk speed.

Helping with consistency and efficiency, and eliminating the risk of human error, fleet management is another neat feature. Wirelessly connect the whole fleet of mowers to the INFINIApp and simply select one of your pre-loaded set-ups to apply those identical clip-rate, acceleration and regen brake settings to every machine.

Together with various UI and function enhancements, the latest version of the INFINIApp has introduced a new automatic turn slow-down feature which has proven extremely popular with everyone who has tested it. At the

end of line turn, a sensor automatically detects that the mower is lifted and slows the unit down to a pre-chosen percentage. Each individual operator can choose a slow-down rate that they are comfortable with and, when dropped back to the mow position, the regular mowing speed is engaged.

Not only does the INFINIApp offer newfound precision and simplicity to setup, programming the mower via a smart device also reduces the componentry required on the mower itself. The INFINIApp eliminates the need for TFT screens, excess buttons or switches that are exposed to the elements, and therefore susceptible to failure due to moisture, wear & tear or accidental damage.

SCAG listen to their dealers!”

STM Co now have the SFC 30 and its smaller brother the SFC 21 added to the impressive SCAG mower range. The SCAG Finish Mower is a credit to their principle of listening to the dealers. Interest had been regularly expressed in having a small pedestrian mower to finish off after a large area cut with their other trusted SCAG machines – or just to have a regular-use walkbehind that they knew they could trust to do the job, withstand heavy use and last several seasons. The dealers knew this was the sort of product SCAG would

make well by maintaining the quality of design and build that is synonymous with the name.

First off was the SFC 30; a tough machine to sit between a 36” cut mower and a commercial 14”. SCAG made a superb job of the unit, supplying it with several standard features: easy height adjustment, good range of handle angle, internally routed operating cables for snag protection and three cutting options of bag, side discharge or mulch. Swivelling front casters are an additional feature on the best-selling “S” version, as they greatly

enhance manoueverability.

Engine options are 5 and 7hp Kohler Command units for the range.

Sales for the 30 have been good, and SCAG have decided to extend the range and introduce the smaller cut pressed SFC 21. No casters available on this model, but the three cut options of bag, mulch or side discharge remain, plus the two engine types.

The machines are available through the STM dealership network. To find your nearest dealer ring 01789 488450, email info@st-mach.com or look at our website www.st-mach.com

Save time, money and effort with Attraxor®

In real terms, this can mean less frequent mowing, saving manpower, petrol, and associated machinery costs. The risks associated with mowing difficult or dangerous areas such as steep banks are also reduced.

Head Greenkeeper, Alan McWilliam, based at Portpatrick Dunskey Golf Club in southwest Scotland, has been using Attraxor® for the past 12 months on golf greens.

Alan said: “Once applied I was really impressed with the reduction of turf growth. It has made the management of the course so much easier, reducing the amount of maintenance required.”

By using Attraxor®, growth is redirected from vertical to

horizontal, increasing the density of turf. It also causes the thickening of plant cell walls and epidermis, contributing to a reduced susceptibility to some turf diseases with its regular use.

Course Manager, Ronnie Montgomery, based at Loudoun Gowf Club in Galston also said that he has been using Attraxor for the last 12 months on golf greens and has noticed a marked difference in the quality of the playing surface.

Ronnie confirmed: “We have noticed a better playing surface. Turf density has improved along with it being easier to maintain consistent greens speeds. We have also noticed this year a reduction in Microdochium.”
