Marine algae extract to support soil microflora Through its influence on organic matter, soil microbial activity releases compounds that help bind soil aggregates, maintaining porosity essential for air and water movement.

To enhance this natural process, Matrix incorporates SEADRY® technology, which leverages the richness of marine algae in specific sugars with prebiotic properties that stimulate soil microflora activity.

This effect is reinforced by additional organic extracts of plant origin, rich in proteins and cellulose. Matrix’s organic component is supported by a mineral complex, consisting of clinoptilolite (zeolite powder), diatomaceous earth, and calcium— elements known for their capacity to retain water, minerals, clays, and humus. As sports turf soils are largely sand-based and thus highly filtrating, Matrix is critical to keeping water and nutrients available to the root zone.

Matrix enhances turf growth conditions During trials at the Golfclub Zwolle in the Netherlands, it was

By stimulating soil microbial activity, maintaining porosity, reducing waterlogging, and improving retention of water and minerals, Matrix creates optimal conditions for the development of healthy, vigorous turf with deep root systems, which is more resilient to pests and weed invasion.

BAGMA launches ‘Paperless Solution’ for machinery installations

he British Agricultural Garden Machinery Association (BAGMA) have teamed up with the UK paperless experts, Culverdocs to launch a new digital solution for recording machinery installations. Months of development have culminated in the introduction of a mobile and desktop app with the capability to simplify and streamline the recording and storage of installation paperwork and other administrative tasks.

Available to all valid BAGMA registered installers, members and non-members, the introduction of the ‘Paperless Solution’ signifies the end of long-winded, handwritten triplicate forms which often end up torn or muddy at the end of a handover & installation session. Cork Racecourse’s Wiedenmann Terra Spike XD8 is vital to horse safety

ust over a year ago, Cork Racecourse, at Mallow in southern Ireland, took delivery of a Wiedenmann Terra Spike XD8, deep aerator to help with year-round preparation of their track. The XD8 was supplied

by Michael Weldon from local Wiedenmann UK dealer Seamus Weldon’s of Killarney.

According to Cork’s General Manager, Eoghan O’Grady, the XD8 has performed exactly as hoped.

“It’s used regularly across the calendar by our team of five and we find it does a really good job.

grass coverage that provides a good cushion for the horses’ feet. We don’t want the surface to be hard. The Terra Spike is a vital piece of kit.”

Cork racecourse is home to top-class jump and flat racing.

One of the busiest racecourses in Ireland, racing takes place in all months, except February, with 20 meets a year. The course is a right-handed track, one and a half miles round and has a straight sprint course of five furlongs.

‘Crouchy’ features on the cover as greens and robotics are put under the Your Course spotlight

he Spring edition of Your Course magazine will this week appear in golf courses across the country and there’s a somewhat prominent star gracing the cover.

Standing at 6ft 7in tall, Peter Crouch made a name for himself as an outstanding striker for the England Men’s football team, Liverpool FC, Tottenham Hotspurs FC and others, but since retirement has turned his attention to broadcasting, podcasting and golf.

In the latest edition of Your Course, the twice-yearly publication from the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA), ‘Crouchy’ talks about his appreciation for the hard work of greenkeepers and groundsmen, who enable elite sportspeople such as himself to perform, whether on the football pitch or the putting surface.

“Without greenkeepers and groundsmen, certainly at grassroots level, we wouldn’t have anything to play on,” Crouch says in the magazine’s lead feature. “It’s a great job they

do and they make it incredibly enjoyable for the rest of us.”

Your Course is an in-print magazine distributed twice a year to golf clubs across the United Kingdom alongside National Club Golfer. The magazine is produced by 18Players in collaboration with BIGGA and is supported by a growing array of online features, able to view on the BIGGA website.

Completes Phase 3 of Sustainable EcoBunker Project aced with the challenges of sandy soil and bunker erosion, Kings Lynn golf club has employed synthetic bunker experts EcoBunker to meet their ongoing maintenance challenges. Now in the third phase of a 40 bunker renovation project, the team and members at Kings Lynn are already enjoying the benefits that the EcoBunker system brings to their course.

“We’re a sandy course which can cause real structural problems with the bunkers,” said Michael Fahy, Deputy Head Greenkeeper at Kings Lynn. “Our bunker walls erode very easily, and we have had several occasions where they’ve collapsed completely. With EcoBunker we are getting that strength and integrity along with a sharp looking finish.

“We have a real problem with soil erosion and rabbit scraping and burrowing, which quickly contaminates the bunker sand,” continued Michael. “To counter this, we have fitted EcoTec bunker liners alongside the synthetic walls to create a fully closed system. This requires virtually no maintenance and eliminates all contamination.

Previously we could spend half a day picking out stones, weeding walls and topping up sand on a single bunker, but now we

simply brush the faces, knock the sand off and strim the top edge.

We’re saving time and budget with every bunker we replace.”

Now in the third phase of renovations, all Par 3’s have been completed and the team is moving on to those bunkers next most in need of attention. Having been trained by EcoBunker during the first installation, Michael and his colleagues, Tim Race and Mason Bernstein, use the EcoBunker system to renovate the bunkers themselves and plan the schedule of work accordingly.

“We re-build a few bunkers each winter, knowing that by the time we get to the last phase, the first EcoBunkers we built will still have many years life left in them, even though it could be a 10 year project. Attraxor powers turf success for North Foreland Golf Club imon Grand, Course Manager at North Foreland Golf Club in Kent, has reported impressive results from using BASF’s Attraxor, a plant growth regulator recommended and supplied by Agrovista Amenity.

For Simon, the location was a major draw when he joined nine years ago.

Simon’s first application on the Northcliffe course was in early spring. “We applied it at the full rate during a mild March. The results were immediate. Within the first few weeks, we noticed significantly reduced growth leading to less leaf removal when cutting and more consistent putting surfaces. I definitely noticed a reduction in seed head as well, when normally they would have been very prevalent at that time of year. There was also a major decrease in disease considering the conditions we were facing. After the initial application we are generally applying it every three weeks and have continued to do so ever since.”

The results impressed Simon enough to integrate Attraxor into the main course maintenance plan later in the summer. “It wasn’t just a short-term solution; it became part of our long-term strategy.”

Attraxor’s use on the two courses demonstrated benefits like reduced mowing frequency and lower disease presence, which were crucial given the limited resources of the team.

“We’re not the largest team managing two busy courses, so any product that helps us maintain quality while reducing workload is invaluable.

The challenges we face now as an industry are immense. Greenkeeping can be a tough environment based around labour shortages and the limited products you can use, so a good growth regulator can be a key product in this respect,” he said.

He remains committed to building on this year’s success and integrating Attraxor into a broader, year-round turf management plan. “I think all the time the grass is growing, Attraxor will be a part of the programme,” Simon said.

Davis and ZLine collaborate to deliver best solution for San Angelo rchitect Tripp Davis is midway through a renovation of John Bredemus’s San Angelo CC in west Texas. And he says the ZLine bunker liner he is installing is making the job significantly easier.

A

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS, APRIL 9, 2025 – Golf course architect Tripp Davis is currently renovating the course at San Angelo Country Club in west Texas. And, he says, he has been pleasantly surprised by what he has found there.

San Angelo CC was founded in 1920, and extended from its original nine to eighteen holes in 192829 by John Bredemus, the first resident golf architect in the state of Texas. “Bredemus is an interesting character,” says Davis. “He was a Princeton graduate and an excellent

athlete – he was declared the Amateur Athletic Union all-around champion in 1912, after the Olympic star Jim Thorpe was ruled ineligible because he had played semi-pro baseball. After school, he apprenticed for a short time with CB Macdonald and Seth Raynor, before moving to Texas, where he founded the state PGA. He was the first architect for Colonial in Fort Worth before Perry Maxwell came in and tweaked it for the 1940 US Open, and he designed Memorial Park in Houston, which Tom Doak rebuilt a few years and which hosts the Houston Open.”

When the club decided it needed to renovate its course, it called Davis.

“Fourteen of the greens are original, though they have shrunk quite a bit, and they are very severe by modern standards,” he says. “Sand is hard to find in west Texas, so

Bredemus built grass bunkers rather than normal ones, and we debated whether to go back to that, but sand bunkers are now an expected part of the course design landscape.

But we have minimised them! We are restoring the design intent on the fourteen old greens, and on the four that have been rebuilt, we are using a lot of the same, Macdonaldinfluenced, design concepts.”

This does not mean that San Angelo will now feature Macdonald/Raynor template holes. “There is no evidence that Bredemus built template holes here, and I think it is a bit of cliché sometimes,” the architect says. “But we will have the greens up on pads, very similar to Raynor’s style, quite rectangular, with the edges falling away rather steeply. They had never converted any of Bredemus’s grass faces along the fairways into

sand, so they’re all still there. The only thing is there are trees along them, so we’re taking them out!”

The project is proceeding apace.

“We have about threequarters of the shaping done,” says Davis. “It’s still hard to find sands in west Texas, but we have found a supply for greens mix, so we’re going to start rebuilding greens shortly. We should be ready to grass greens in late April or early May, and we are sodding everything else, so we should be done by late June, and hopefully the weather cooperates so we can reopen in September/October.”

Although Davis is being parsimonious with sand bunkers, they will still be significant part of the course, and the architect has a very definite view of how he wants them to look. “I like to roll the sod over the edge of the bunker,” he says. “In west Texas, for years they have mowed everything between bunker and green at collar height, similar to what they do in Australia.

The toplines are pretty smooth so they can run a machine over the edge. It was really important to roll

the sod over and staple it down.”

Texas-based contractor Greenscape Methods is handling the build.

Greenscape boss Don Mahaffey says: “Any time a club entrusts us to work on its golf course, we understand what that means as most full renovations are a oncein-a-generation type of project. The project at San Angelo even feels a little more than that as this is the first major renovation since the club was founded in 1927. We’ve been fortunate to work on John Bredemus designs at Memorial Park and Braeburn CC in Houston, but both of those courses have undergone significant renovations in the past. At San Angelo much of Bredemus’ work is still there, and Tripp has done a masterful job restoring that, especially the Bredemus grassy bunker type features, while also adding interest, especially on and around the greens.”

Davis is installing the ZLine liner system at San Angelo. “I believe that ZLine is the most effective bunker liner system I have seen in my thirty years in the business,” he says. “Being

able to have water move across the top of the liner and run down to our drainage system is key to managing moisture in the sand. With ZLine, the beauty of it is that you’re still putting in four inch perforated pipe in a trench filled with gravel, then we put the filter fabric above the trench, then put the liner on top and glue it, and it creates a very solid barrier.

The liner has a grain in it, which helps to hold sand, which is important we’re at 55-60 per cent slope in our bunker faces. At that angle, the ball isn’t going to hold, so we only need an inch of sand up there.”

ZLine representative Casey Jones says that he has modified the system to suit Davis’s bunkers at San Angelo.

“Our normal system includes an edging solution, but because Tripp likes to have sod overlap the bunker edge, we took the edging system out of the package for San Angelo,” he explains. “He likes to flash the floor liner up the bunker face a few inches instead. We have been involved on numerous projects with Tripp and working with him is a joy – and we look forward to seeing the San Angelo work successfully concluded.”

STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA, FEBRUARY 20, 2025 – The Toftrees Golf Resort is to undergo a major renovation project at the hands of Jim Nagle of Nagle Design Works – and the architect believes the property has the potential to become one of the best public courses in Pennsylvania.

The Toftrees course dates from 1969 and was originally designed by prolific architect Ed Ault. The resort was acquired some years ago by local investment group and is managed by the hospitality company Shaner Hotel Group, and the golf course project is

part of a substantial upgrading project for the whole resort.

“Shaner senior vice president George Wolfe – who I have known for twenty years, since he was greens chair at the Sunnehana club – called me a few months ago to talk about a bunker problem they were having on the course,” says Nagle. “I visited the course, and from a quick fix the converasation soon moved to potentially developing a comprehensive renovation plan for Toftrees.”

“Towards the end of the original owner’s life, capital investment was in short supply, and the golf course suffered,” says George Wolfe.

“Since we came in, we have slowly been fixing that – we brought

Marriott Golf in to manage the golf operation, and now we’re taking the next steps. Although we have owned the resort for a number of years, it is only recently that we have started redeveloping it – our vision is to create a first class hotel with excellent banqueting and convention facilities – and with that, it was obvious that upgrading the golf course would be important.

“Toftrees was originally a semiprivate club with a hotel attached – it had a resort feature, but it always felt like a private club. There has always been a tie between the golf course and Penn State University, which is local. Ault did a lot of work in the region in the Sixties, but I think this must have been quite a big project for

him, as there was a masterplan for the whole community involved.

I’ve played a number of Ed Ault’s courses, and there’s no doubt in my mind that this is some of his best work – he had a great piece of land to work with.”

It was the site on which Toftrees sits that made Nagle sit up and take notice. “It was the property that made this a great opportunity for me – it has great undulation, and some really nice features such as a wash running through it that could be opened up,” he says. “The routing is very good – the only hole that stands out as being especially challenging is the thirteenth, which has a blind tee shot with the hillside on the left and a tight corridor. The rest of the course flows nicely, with wonderful contrast and elevation change.

The course needs improvement, but it doesn’t need blowing up.

Today, golfers have higher ‘design IQs’ than in decades past. “I have played pretty much all of the best courses in Pennsylvania, and I’m quite convinced that Jim will give us something that matches up very well with the top public venues in the state,” says George Wolfe. “To the right of the par three sixth is a former quarry that could be a beautiful

feature, but it is inundated by foliage. I’m certain Jim has his eye on opening this area up. The course has great rhythm to its routing and great contour to the land. The course is solid, but some past tinkering needs attention, and, with Jim’s eye, I’m convinced that Toftrees will emerge from this project as a world-class track.”

Design work is starting immediately, but no date has yet been set or construction to begin.

“There is an abundance of inferior tree types on the property, but at the same time there are substantial mature stands of trees. The fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth have too many undesirable evergreens that are hiding the beauty of the land.

Tree work is only one part of the plan, but it really stands out.

The bunkering could be more creative, which would give better aesthetics and playability. At the moment, the course features sixties/ seventies bunker styling, and lots

Over those 3 years, working with Andrew and Jason along with their committed staff, our expectations as a football club have been exceeded— with our last PQS score from the GMA being graded ‘Advanced’ from its previous score of ‘Good’.

The Three-Year Plan: From Good to Advanced The improvement strategy developed by SHERRIFF’s and Butcher was centred around the principles of modern agronomy, precision maintenance, and year-round consistency. The

Baroness trio prove on pitch and on point for Ardingly College trio of ride-on machines from Baroness have emerged victorious in the comprehensive search for new mowers at Ardingly College in West Sussex. The maintenance of the 250acre site is a year-round operation for Deputy Head of Grounds Emile Ellis and the team of eight, with the two new LM551B’s and GM2810A from Baroness swiftly becoming MVPs for areas both on and off the pitch.

When not playing a crucial role in curriculum sport, the facilities at Ardingly College are in demand from a number of school camps and local sports clubs. This means that time is truly of the essence with all of the maintenance so, with the existing mower fleet starting to tire, investment in replacement equipment was needed. “We cast the net very wide when looking for new mowers and demonstrated all the various makes and models” Emile explains. “The Baroness mowers

stuck out straight away for their build quality and simplicity of operation.”

After an extensive demo period, two LM551B fairway mowers and a GM2810A rotary mower were installed by dealers Lister Wilder in November 2024 – the first Baroness machines for the college.

“You can tell the machines are incredibly well thought through.

They do everything they need to without any unnecessary electrics or fuss which makes them a pleasure to set up and use.”

“We use the LM551B’s for everything ‘on pitch’ which includes our cricket outfields, winter sports pitches and other areas with a lower height of cut.” He continues, “We’ve noticed a significant difference in the quality of cut and finish, and the units definitely stay on cut for much longer. I used to go round with a spanner in my pocket to adjust the units between pitches but now it’s one check first thing and

you’re set for the rest of the day.”

“The GM2810A is used pretty much everywhere else, on all the areas that don’t support play but where we still want to retain presentation. It does a fantastic job. It tackles grass of all lengths and is also a lot bigger than its predecessor which means not only are we achieving better results, we’re achieving it quicker than before.”

Changing to a new brand of equipment can be daunting, but the service Emile says they received from Mark Carter at Lister Wilder and Luke Collins from Baroness took away all of the anxiety. “The team had full training on all of the familiar features and all of those that are unique to Baroness which means everyone is comfortable and can get the very best out of the machines. We couldn’t be happier with the support and the results we’re seeing, and we’re going into the main grass growth season well and truly at full speed.”

It was a role he credits for honing his understanding of machinery’s role in grounds care. “That experience as a mechanic has been invaluable and has helped me in becoming a better all-round grounds manager,” he says.

Managing the grounds at Tonbridge School is no small feat. When Danny first took over, excessive growth and frequent mowing were significant challenges. “The team were cutting every day—it was relentless,” he explains. “We were spending hours mowing and collecting clippings, particularly on the cricket outfields.”

Kubota LX401 pairing pull their weight at AFC Bournemouth!

With a Kubota ST401 already based at the club’s Vitality Stadium, the two new additions will be shared between the existing training ground and brand-new state-of-theart training complex - where they’ll be key to executing the year-round maintenance on the four sand-based, desso pitch constructions.

The investment off the pitch appears to be paying dividends on it with the club, nicknamed ‘The Cherries’, at the end of one of the most successful seasons in Bournemouth’s history. In charge of facilities is Head of Grounds Ian Lucas who is, currently, maintaining four sites assisted by a team of 11. In equipping the new 24-hectare training ground with its own machinery fleet, Ian explored all the options when it came to compact tractors – with Kubota proving more ‘compact’ than others…

“No groundsman wants to be putting more weight on their pitches than they need to – it’s critical to find the balance of retaining a low footprint but having enough lift capacity for all the implements we use” Ian explains. “We compared a number of options in the mid-compact arena and found that not only was the Kubota specification better, it had a slightly higher lift capacity and was half a tonne lighter. When the competition indicated it was down to build quality, I told them I’d never had

No Land Reclamation Job is Too Tough for BPG Contractors and the Reist Landscaper PG Contractors, based in Oldham and covering the North West, has found the perfect machine for land reclamation in the Reist Landscaper from Campey Turf Care Systems.

Specialising in hard and soft landscaping, minor civil engineering works, and projects on golf courses, football pitches, and reclamation sites, BPG Contractors needed a machine that could withstand tough conditions and handle demanding jobs. After a year of use, the Reist Landscaper has proven to be an indispensable asset.

The decision to invest in the Reist Landscaper was driven by its durability and adaptability to various project types. “It’s a very robust machine, incredibly well-built and strong,” ex-plains BPG Contractors Director Bryn Wynston. “We primarily bought it for challenging land reclamation jobs, and it’s been perfect for that.”

One key job where the machine has excelled is a large-scale reclamation and seeding pro-ject at Vickers Cross Golf Club, where a new short game practice area and golf academy are being constructed.

This job involved importing and re-profiling materials to create

the area, with the materials often containing debris such as bricks, wire, and plastic, as they originated from building sites. “Because the material wasn’t clean, we needed a machine that could handle these conditions without any mechanical issues,” Bryn explains. “This is where the Reist Land-scaper’s design shines, as it has no mechanical parts, such as gearboxes, which could be damaged or become tangled with debris.

“The lack of mechanical parts makes the machine perfect for this kind of work. There’s nothing to break, and no need to worry about costly repairs or replacing parts.”

The machine’s versatility also stood out during the project. “After the bulldozer had levelled the soil, the Landscaper went over the ground, ripping it up and preparing it for seeding in just a few passes,” Bryn continued. “In a one-pass operation, it created the perfect seed-bed, so for land reclamation, it’s absolutely ideal.”

BPG Contractors put considerable thought into finding the right piece of equipment for their needs. After researching the market, they came across the Landscaper through Campey Product Specialists Tom Weston and Richard Campey. After trying out the Landscaper, they were

convinced of its capabilities and purchased it immediately. “Richard demoed the machine for us, and we knew straight away it was exactly what we needed,” Bryn explains.

“Richard told us to really push the machine to its limits and test it in every possible way. We took on that challenge, and the Landscaper passed every test with flying colours.

We were so impressed that we ended up buying it right after.

“We’ve used it for everything from re-levelling car parks to ripping up and re-grading farm tracks and old, Redgra surfaced pitches, and the machine has proven its toughness and reliability. It’s not the kind of machine you worry about damaging.

It withstands the toughest jobs with ease, and adding a seeder has made the machine even more useful for us on large scale projects. It will be an ideal machine for sowing wildflower seed on the VCGC project in 2025.”

After the Flood he year 2022 was the hottest on record in the UK and experts are warning the unprecedented heat is a sign of things to come. With the ground dried out and continued heavy footfall, amenity areas, sports fields, golf courses, parks, other treelined spaces, and even domestic back gardens suffer heavy soil compaction. When the rains come, water cannot penetrate the soil, and sports grounds in particular turn into quagmires, stopping play and resulting for many in lost revenue.

Exceptionally heavy rainfall leading to flooding has a number of other knock-on effects for turf and trees.

Flood waters are heavy enough to force the oxygen out of the soil structure, leading to dead or dying turf and trees showing signs of severe stress, leaf fall and rotting roots.

No amount of normal aeration, spiking, or decompaction of the topsoil is going to solve a problem that goes much deeper. That is where deep aeration specialists are called for and one company, Terrain Aeration, has been solving these problems for well over thirty years.

Built on shale, like so many, even

with regular Vertidraining, the ground had become compacted at depth. The club treasurer remembers well the day in 2018.

“The green was filling with water before my very eyes,” he says, “and after the heavy showers, it remained quite sodden and unplayable. It seemed no amount of work could get it back into shape.” This left fifty or so members without playing facilities until it dried out. One contractor working with London councils has among the sites under their watchful eye many of the city’s sports pitches, of which there are ninety-five football pitches, ten cricket squares, bowling greens and running tracks.

“A lot of the sites are on madeup ground and experience major problems with drainage,” says their parks officer. “We have carried out aeration down to 300mm, but it’s not enough to get to the pans.”

So, what’s the answer? Terrain Aeration has a range of machines with the ability to send a probe to a depth of one metre. It penetrates the ground with the help of its built-in JCB road breaker, reaching the pan. Here it injects compressed air, working on a grid system and

fragmenting the ground into fissures.

These interlink to help restructure the soil and let in vital oxygen.

Turf roots will grow stronger and uniquely the soil structure is kept open by Terrain Aeration’s Terralift machine process. With the Terralift’s probe reaching 1m depth, it’s also the perfect way to help move excess water away from stagnating around tree roots. By going deeper than the growing roots, excess water can percolate away and save the roots from rotting. Again, vital oxygen is injected into the soil along with other products to help the root system re-establish itself. The results are a healthier and stronger root growth, a visibly stronger canopy and even more fruit on the trees.

Diseases such as Phytophthora (waterborne problems for Yew trees) can be stopped as opening the soil structure and injecting oxygen back into the soil is beneficial to the health of the tree. In the above examples, Terrain Aeration’s system has come to the rescue after the flood for sports grounds, golf courses, racecourses, parks and even new-build gardens for major housebuilders’ developments.

“The work was done so well that, when it was fully grassed in, we decided to convert it into a football pitch instead of just a training area because it was just too good only to be used for training.

Alongside the levelling work, extensive drainage improvements were made, mirroring the successful approach taken in Phase 1.

Drains were installed at fivemeter intervals with sand slits at half-meter intervals, significantly improving water management on the field. Previously, areas of the Year 7 field would become waterlogged and unplayable

for months at a time, but that issue has now been resolved.

Looking ahead to Phase 3, the school is set to benefit from additional enhancements, including the installation of an Olympic-style long jump and triple jump area and another synthetic cricket wicket for match play.

The ongoing collaboration between Altrincham Grammar School and Duncan Ross Ltd continues to elevate the school’s sports facilities, fostering greater student participation in various sports.

“There are a lot more kids playing cricket now using

the practice nets,” Neil explains. “With the extra football pitch, we have better facilities all around.

Before, the fields would turn into a mud bath in winter, but now we have quality playing surfaces all year round. Mark’s New Way of Marking or three decades, the rhythm of Mark Williams’s work was dictated by the steady push of a pedestrian line marker. But the moment he first saw TinyMobileRobots, a whole new world opened up.

“After all these years, I said to myself, why didn’t I come up with something like that? It was a godsend. Basically, TinyMobileRobots reinvented line marking,” Mark Williams explains.

Mark Williams is one of two people responsible for line marking at Morris Grounds Maintenance, a company that provides grounds maintenance for over 150 schools, academies, football and rugby clubs across the Cardiff and Newport areas. At some sites, pitches are marked every four days. This means that Mark Williams

marks dozens of pitches. The robot, therefore, helps him a great deal.

“Once you have set everything up on the tablet, your pitches are saved forever. For me, the robot is so easy to use. I don’t have to be an IT engineer to operate it. The tablet is user-friendly, with all the settings ever needed. It even stops when it runs out of paint,” says Mark.

Mark Williams manages over 100 fields, and a standard football pitch can be done in 25 minutes, which is at least half the time it would take to mark manually. The time saved is crucial for Mark, allowing him to make full use of the periods when the robot is operating: “Before, it took a whole day to do an athletic track field with discus

and everything. Now, it’s all done within an hour and a half. And during that time, when the robot is working, I’m taking down posts or cutting the grass. I usually cut one pitch, get the robot going, then cut another pitch and let the robot just work behind me,” he explains.

The robot has also enabled Mark to go beyond sports pitches. He now marks letters and numbers onto fields – just to add something a little extra. The ability to create logos, in particular, has made him quite popular.

“A couple of weeks ago, Newport Rugby Club celebrated its 150th anniversary as a club. And I put their logo on the field. It was brilliant - everyone at the club was impressed; they loved it.

He is keen to understand the science behind turf health and to implement the means to maintain it. e is the fact that the club, Jamie began his greenkeeping journey two decades ago, accruing experience at Dale Hill Golf Club and Lamberhurst Golf Club before joining Highwoods Golf Club, where

he has been for over eight years leading a team of six greens staff. His role involves not just maintaining the course but also continuously experimenting with and refining turf management practices. In addition, Vanguard’s Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system enhances engine performance by improving efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and minimising emissions. Managed by the CANbus controller, the Vanguard 17,2kW EFI horizontal shaft engine seamlessly integrates into the mower’s advanced communication network. This system enables real-time data exchange between components, ensuring dynamic, efficient operation and optimised performance.

In addition, the Vanguard engine comes with a three-year manufacturer warranty to ensure long-term reliability of this critical component.
