Origin Amenity Solutions is working in partnership with Redexim to highlight the added value of Carbon4Grass seed in amenity and landscaped areas. During photosynthesis grasses absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere into the leaves and roots, sequestering carbon into the soil as they senesce and decompose. Carbon4Grass cultivars sequester relatively more carbon, a choice of 10 mixes helps mitigate the environmental impact of maintaining intensively managed turf without compromising on quality.

Top 100 course chooses John Deere machines for fleet upgrade

Trevose Golf and Country Club, near Padstow in Cornwall, is currently 66th in the coveted top 100 rankings and prides itself on the presentation and playability of the par-72 Championship links, nine-hole Peter Aliss designed Headland course, and neighbouring nine-hole Short Course. Course Manager, Neil Ivamy, and his staff are responsible for maintaining the high

standards set at the club, which has a rich history since being founded in 1925.

That includes ensuring his greenkeepers have the best tools at their disposal, and a recent deal struck with John Deere dealer Masons Kings has seen a new fleet of 10 machines including mowers, utility vehicles and a compact tractor which have been added to the club’s machinery shed.

One of the finest golf courses in the UK has made a significant investment in its future with the purchase of a fleet of machines to support the greenkeeping team
Trevose Golf Club Course Manager Neil Ivamy with his greenkeeping team and their new John Deere fleet

The new kit represents a change of manufacturer for Neil’s team, but he says they are very happy with their decision.

“It has always been important to us to use the best machinery and equipment for our course,” Neil said.

“We chose the John Deere range as it was a proven and high-quality product and we have received excellent support – not just through the purchase process, but also through their proactiveness and machinery training.

“Having a local dealer and support staff who are always available to help us with any questions or queries has been invaluable and the service team has been excellent in providing any product support requirements.

“The feedback we have been getting from players and staff has been excellent and

having a local dealer that supports us like Masons Kings have has been fantastic in our transition to John Deere.”

Trevose’s team now runs a 9009A wide area mower, a 4066R compact tractor, a TS Gator and three HPX-815E Gators. The club’s greens and tees are now cut with four 2750E E-cut triplex mowers.

Sean Williams, Assistant Greenkeeper and the man with the responsibility for machinery maintenance, said he is happy with the move to John Deere kit.

He said: “The functionality of the machines, such as setting up the cylinders and future maintenance, is easy and has saved me hours of time. You can use the tech control system to set the same quality of cut, regardless of operator.”

BTME 2023:

Inform, Innovate, Inspire

The golf industry is changing faster than ever with new rules, new technology and new challenges posed by the economy, our changing climate and countless other factors.

The BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME) provides BIGGA members and the entire golf and sportsturf industries with the tools needed to overcome any of the challenges they face, helping to inspire a strong and vibrant sport for generations to come.

BTME takes place from 24 to 26 January 2023 at the Harrogate Convention Centre in North Yorkshire. The trade show is hosted alongside the Continue to Learn education programme, taking place from 22 to 25 January and considered one of the most informative and influential learning opportunities in amenity turf management.

Featuring more than 120 innovative exhibitors, alongside Harrogate’s renowned hospitality and networking opportunities, BTME 2023 will see a welcome return to the reputation

for socialising and professional development that has grown throughout the exhibition’s 34-year history. Registration for the event is free and can be completed online.

BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton said: “I’m delighted that BTME is returning this January. The events of the last three years have been extraordinary and it is incredible to think that this will be the first BTME taking place at its usual time since January 2020. But as life returns to something approaching normal, I can’t recall an event in our industry that has

New Ventrac 4520 all-terrain compact tractor launches at BTME

BTME 2022 provided the first opportunity for the UK golf sector to see the NEW Ventrac 4520 all-terrain compact tractor. Through Ventrac’s advanced engineering and design efforts there’s 30% more available power, the best mix of machine performance, operator experience, and durability; all combined in this new 4520 tractor unit.

At its core, the 4520 is a compact tractor, but it is very different to what most greenkeepers are used to seeing. The purpose of a tractor is to perform tasks more efficiently than manual tasks. The Ventrac 4520 plays on these advantages, then takes it to the next level. When coupled with the extensive range of Ventrac attachments, this tractor is a versatile machine for a variety of professional users.

The 4520 retains all the features of its predecessor, including its 30-degree slope climbing ability, but has been enhanced with an all-new hydraulic system featuring larger bore piping,

more powerful auxiliary hydraulics and more resilient hoses and fittings resulting in faster and stronger operation.

That means 30% more available power, improving performance and productivity while providing the operator with a quieter working platform.

A new, robust centre pivot on the Flexframe provides greater durability and reliability and new LED lights provide enhanced vision in poor light conditions. A redesigned dashboard with a new gauge layout is more visible and easy-to-read. Most importantly, all of the existing attachments fit seamlessly to the new 4520.

Ventrac has become the number one choice for versatility for ground’s care professionals. Combining a blend of peak power and agility with front-mounted attachments for superior visibility, a pivoting frame for manoeuvrability, and excellent

weight distribution for balance and stability, the new 4520 elevates the Ventrac experience to a whole new level.

Rupert Price, managing director of Price Turfcare, the UK and Ireland distributor for Ventrac said, “We know that Ventrac is the most versatile groundscare maintenance system available to turf professionals in the UK. Our sales, since we launched in 2017, verify this and with the launch of this new machine we have gone up a level. With 30% more available power, the performance is incredible. And, all existing attachments connect seamlessly to the new model. The machine looks similar to the previous model, with a few styling tweaks, but these latest refinements have enhanced an already excellent machine to a higher plane.

the challenges, innovations and regulatory rules in the industry.

David said: “BTME is a major event, and we are very much looking forward to using this exhibition to promote the need for CPD, upskilling, and ensuring people work productively, legally and most importantly safely.

“We recognise that, like so many other land-based industries, a shortage of suitably skilled labour is a major issue in the sports turf and wider landscaping sector.

“A key solution to addressing this skills gap and growing the sector is without doubt high quality, industry-recognised training and qualifications.

“That’s why we believe it’s crucial we attend events like BTME to share details of our latest training initiatives.

“Our training is trusted by the Landscape and Sports Turf sector as we deliver high-quality, industry-recognised courses to support workforce skills development.

“Lantra’s new Landscape MultiTools and updated Ride-On Mowers training courses will certainly be worth checking out at BTME 2023 as they cover technological advances in both petrol and battery powered machinery. We also have an increasing number of sports turf related customised provision training courses being offered through our network of approved training providers.”

Two new Ventrac attachments launched for seedbed preparartion

entrac has launched two new attachments for their 4520 allterrain compact tractor to help turf managers with the important task of seedbed preparation.

The first is the DC520 Soil Cultivator which prepares bare soil by cultivating a soft and uniform seedbed for the best possible direct-seeding results. This attachment reconditions hard, compacted soil into a fine surface for more successful and consistent germination rates.

The Soil Cultivator consists of four main components that work simultaneously to process high volumes of soil and provide the ultimate seedbed. Cultivator Tines pulverize the soil and separate the debris, then Separator Tines sift and bury rock and other large debris below the prep surface. The Distribution Blade carries the sifted soil and distributes it evenly

across the working surface before the Perforated Roller creates a pocketed surface for seed and presses small debris below the graded soil.

Complementing the Soil Cultivator is the EG520 Primary Seeder, which plants grass seed directly into bare soil with a consistent and accurate drop rate for perfect seed placement. With precise application adjustment and a removable calibration tray, easy adjustment for different grass seed types is possible.

The Primary Seeder features five main components for improved direct-seeding capability. The Calibration Tray is a builtin tray that catches material during the calibration process. The Front Packer Roller crushes the material to provide a smooth surface for the seed to drop. The Rear Packer Roller is an offset roller that places a fine layer of dirt over the seed.

The Seed Box has a 142-litre capacity

to accommodate a significant amount of seed and the Precision Seed Funnels allow an accurate flow for a variety of turf seeds. This ground-driven application is consistent at variable speeds, and the offset cultipacker discs are designed to create optimal seed-to-soil contact. Finally, the 142-litre hopper capacity provides the efficiency expected from Ventrac attachments.

Rupert Price, managing director of Price Turfcare, the UK and Ireland distributor for Ventrac said,

“We know that Ventrac is the most versatile groundscare maintenance system available to turf professionals in the UK. These latest attachments add to the extensive range of frontmounted implements, providing yet more versatility for the owners of a Ventrac compact tractor.“

Showcasing a range of rotary and multi-deck mowers

As restrictions on curative chemistries continue to pose a challenge to course managers, it is now more critical than ever that every operation conducted above ground has plant health at its core. As the most regular task, mowing can have either a positive or negative impact on the plant depending on whether the correct cutting performance can be attained. This will be the focus for Vanmac as they return to BTME in 2023, showcasing a range of rotary and multi-deck mowers from Progressive that offer industry-leading cut quality and contour-following ability.

The Progressive TDR-X features three independently floating decks which promise to closely follow undulations without the risk of scalping – thereby reducing the risk of creating entry points for pathogens to take hold. A 3.2m cutting width and easily adjustable cutting height range of between 10mm and 85mm gives complete versatility for use on both fine and sports turf surfaces, with full width rollers on both the front and rear of each deck leaving a first-class finish.

Along with other machines in the Progressive range, the TDR-X features Pro Lift-N-Turn™ technology, which enables

the operator to temporarily lift the decks with the PTO still engaged, increasing manoeuvrability and overall productivity.

The TDR-X will be on show on stand 526 alongside the Pro-Flex 120 – the most widely used trailed contour finishing mower. The Pro-Flex is ideal for producing a fine finish on fairways and surrounds, featuring a high blade tip speed and graduated cut height options down to 25mm for uniformity of cut and unbeatable versatility. Totalling 3m in width, each of the three decks is equipped with a shock absorber to tackle cutting tasks on even the toughest, uneven ground.

If it’s cut and collect on the agenda, then Vanmac have that covered too with the Trilo range of multi-purpose collector units. The Trilo M4 can be configured with a variety of shaft options – including a choice of flail rotor styles - and features a powerful fan to lift the mown material up into the 4m3 hopper, leaving a clean finish after a single pass. Scarifier and brush shafts are also available for the M-Series to complete tasks across the full maintenance calendar.

Sustainable management of fine turf and sports turf surfaces

ustainable management of fine turf and sports turf surfaces doesn’t have to mean a compromise in visual merit or performance. Demonstrating exactly that at BTME 2023 will be DLF, who return with a raft of new mixture formulations in their Johnsons Sports Seed range – incorporating new cultivars that promise to improve play quality and be kinder to the environment, and budgets, thanks to reduced reliance on chemical inputs.

S

With the ever-changing climatic pressures and growing demands of players and governing bodies, DLF are utilising research conducted across their global breeding centres to create mixtures with enhanced sustainability, that combat some of the biggest challenges faced today and those in the future. New for 2023 will be J Intense 50, a new renovation mixture for golf tees, pathways and high wear areas. This mix promises improved drought tolerance, disease resistance and rapid establishment thanks to the inclusion of DLF’s 4turf® perennial ryegrass.

One of Johnsons leading golf mixtures – J All Bent – has also been reformulated for 2023. With Browntop Bent (Agrostis Tenuis) demonstrating better wear tolerance under close mown conditions and a much lower need for water and fertiliser than Poa annua or Creeping Bent, J All Bent now incorporates Cleek alongside Arrowtown and Manor to make a three-cultivar blend. As a top performer in STRI close mown trials, Cleek will help to create a mixture with maximum shoot

density, excellent playing quality and the highest level of fusarium tolerance.

Cleek is just one of several new cultivars chosen for inclusion across the portfolio in 2023. Orienette Chewings Fescue, Seroa Slender Creeping Red Fescue and Crystal Hard Fescue are amongst the others, and all are included in the 2023 J Premier Fairway formulation. These new cultivars will deliver the ultimate fairway sward in terms of density, visual merit and sustainable management, with the increase of hard and sheeps fescue improving tolerance of disease, drought and salt.

Along with changes to the sports turf mixtures across the Johnsons Sports Seed, MM Seed and Masterline ranges, information will also be available on the recently extended Colour Boost and UK native Pro Flora wild flower seed collections, which are ideal for increasing biodiversity and creating eye-catching focal points around the golf course.

The DLF technical team would also like to hear from you on what issues are impacting your management programmes in order to shape future educational and training events. Those who stop by stand 130 over the three days and share their thoughts can also pick up a free Johnsons snood and be entered into a draw for a chance to win a ‘Greens Tester’ – the perfect tool for monitoring speed, trueness and greens performance.

Shotley and Benfieldside Tennis Club

ARTIFICIAL SPORTS SURFACES

This was our first experience of Playrite products and people. We are delighted with both – good, honest, quality people and a great product

Since

2

beginning of 2020, the Shotley & Benfieldside Tennis Club started to encounter an increase in court usage. This inspired the club to consider a second phase refurbishment to replace the remaining 3 court surfaces.

Founded in 1893, Shotley & Benfieldside Tennis Club in County Durham, is an established community tennis club with a thriving social scene, consisting of a unique indoor floodlit court and 5 additional outdoor tennis courts, all of which are artificial. The club decided to refurbish 2 of the courts in 2020 as they were worn and in need of replacement. The positive reaction from members enjoying the new courts and the increasing influx of court usage, prompted the club to consider replacing the remaining 3 courts.

Whilst the remaining 3 courts were still in a reasonable condition, they showed signs of wear & tear and had started to become unreliable in poor weather and prone to flooding. To help fund the project, members were asked to renew annual fees earlier than normal and were offered the opportunity to purchase a special 5 or 10 year membership. This investment allowed the club to fund the

project and ensure that the work would be completed before the 2021 season began.

The club’s committee nominated a working party to investigate the market and test surfaces. Initial findings identified that Playrite’s Grandplay surface would provide the unrivalled durability and performance the club was after.

Grandplay is Playrite’s most popular tennis surface, suited for tennis players who want a faster pace. With a uniformed tuft density design to simulate a natural grass court with a positive grip underfoot, it makes it the preferred choice for many clubs.

To ensure that the surface was the right choice, the committee visited several clubs with Grandplay installed, and tested the surfaces out by playing a few games of tennis. The committee had several technical discussions with Playrite to agree some amendments to the specification to meet their needs and achieve direct equivalence with the

previously installed courts.

Playrite recommended local contractors Fosse Contracts to complete the surface installation, and having partnered together on similar projects, were also able to offer a full turnkey solution that delivered an excellent all-weather playing surface.

Committee Member, Tony Pensom commented “This was our first experience of Playrite products and people. We are delighted with both – good, honest, quality people and a great product”.

The project was completed ready for the 2021 season and members have been thrilled to experience the new courts.

Be mindful of infill migration when it comes to brushing your synthetic surface

The ability of a synthetic turf surface to sustain high levels of usage and facilitate large numbers of people to play sport has cemented their role in many communities. However, it’s important that it is used in such a way that minimises the negative impact it has on its surroundings. One important fact to consider is minimising the migration of infill into the environment.

The EMEA Synthetic Turf Council (ESTC), working in conjunction with the European Standards Committee (CEN) have prepared Technical Report 17519: Guidance on how to Minimise Infill Dispersion into the Environment –detailing how to employment of some simple design, operation and maintenance procedures can help to reduce the potential of infill contaminating the surrounding environment. Together with construction considerations, such as containment barriers, decontamination mats and perimeter drainage, the ongoing maintenance must also be conducted mindfully.

With the use of a synthetic surface, infill will naturally migrate outwards towards the pitch perimeters which is where effective maintenance comes into play; ensuring that infill is returned to the higher use areas for surface stability and playability. The easiest way to do this is through regular brushing, though thought should be given to the type of brush used to reduce the risk of infill flicking up and off the surface.

GKB Machines have a range of brush options including the 4m wide Brush, for quick surface coverage with hydraulically foldable wings for convenient transportation and storage. In addition, the GKB Quick-Brush can be configured with a range of optional extras including a rake or rubber finishing mat to suit individual requirements.

Also in the GKB stable is the Rotobrush, for the effective maintenance of perimeter areas with significantly lower risks of infill dispersal when compared to the use of other equipment, such as leaf blowers. The rotating brush head on the arm of the Rotobrush can switch between clockwise and anti-clockwise operation, with the rigid bristles effectively collecting the accumulated infill and moving it towards the centre of the surface. Together with redistributing infill, brushing the perimeters of an artificial pitch is also crucial to stop moss, algae and other contaminants taking hold.

When brushing or using any other maintenance tools such as cleaners, it is inevitable that some infill will be collected on the bristles and bodywork so take care to ensure that machinery is thoroughly cleaned before it leaves the surface. Ideally, once the job is complete, the equipment should then be securely stored on a hard surface, in an area that doesn’t drain into the surrounding environment.

Further information around synthetic surface ‘best practice’ can be sourced through the EMEA Synthetic Turf Council –of which GKB Machines are a member.

AERATION, IRRIGATION & DRAINAGE Home

Home from home for Terrain Aeration

Aeration

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) is an independent social change organisation working to solve UK poverty. The founder, Joseph Rowntree, of the famous York sweet manufacturing family, was a visionary Quaker businessman and

social reformer. The origins of the organisation’s financial resources lie in a major donation of shares in the original Rowntree Company he gifted in 1904. In the same year, Joseph’s son, Seebohm made available fields behind his Homestead House to children attending York Elementary Schools for outdoor activities. Today, at just under 15-acres, Homestead Park is a beautiful garden owned, managed and maintained by JRF for visitors to enjoy. There are various tree-trail walks around the park and the heavy footfall over time has led to severe compaction and waterlogging, causing the trees to suffer.

“The areas had never been aerated,” says Senior Gardener Paul Sarginson, “and we were finding the semi-mature cherry trees, around a hundred of them, as well as the mature chestnut and mature oak trees were becoming distressed. Terrain Aeration were recommended to us for their deep aeration treatment and they came to

us for two half-days in October to do the work.”

Terrain Aeration’s Tree Division, headed by David Churchyard, has been formed out of the company’s work over twenty-five years of treating trees in all types of situation, from back gardens to large estates right through to Royal Parks. Trees may become stressed as a result of a number of factors such as nutrient shortages in the soil, surface compaction due to foot traffic and

Breaking up the soil around the roots, and beyond, means that excess water will drain away from the roots to help stop anaerobic conditions and rotting of the root system.

waterlogging where water drains off hard surface pathways.

The Terrain Aeration Terralift machines comprise a probe which reaches one metre depth, deeper than the roots of trees (other than the major tap roots which grow straight down). Breaking up the soil around the roots, and beyond, means that excess water will drain away from the roots to help stop anaerobic conditions and rotting of the root system. The probe is then used to inject dried seaweed, which helps keep the fissures open and backfilling the probe holes with aggregate provides a semi permanent aeration/ventilation shaft. Terrain Aeration aerates around the roots

using two-metre spacings - on most occasions one-metre inside and onemetre outside the canopy drip line, as this is where the growing roots lie.

Decompacting around the roots and injecting air into the soil increases the

percentage of uptake of oxygen into the root system. Using the Terralift’s ability to inject granular material via its seaweed carrier, forcing it upwards into the root zone of the trees, it is also possible to inject a tree feed mix containing slow release general nutrients and magnesium.

“Treatment of the main lawn areas this year was part of JRF’s management plan,” says Paul, “the Terrain Aeration lads who came were great and the plan from here is to have them back every year for a rolling programme of treatment.”

Wyboston Lakes resort trusts Otterbine with its water once again

otel, spa and golf resort Wyboston Lakes in Cambridgeshire has once again trusted Otterbine with its prized possession: its lakes.

After twenty years with the same fountain, the venue decided to not only replace it with an updated model but also acquire a second to further enhance the beauty of two of its prominent lakes.

Wyboston Lakes sits at the edge of the historic market town of St Neots in 380 acres of rural countryside and as well as providing leisure facilities, it has two residential business event venues and is home to all kinds of fauna and flora, which the resort goes to great lengths to protect.

Otterbine has played a big part in helping the extensive venue achieve the look it needs for its lakes, as well as providing an environmentally-friendly

water aeration solution for almost two decades, says Louisa Watson, who has been at the helm of the resort’s marketing for nine years.

“Wyboston Lakes is one of the largest independent business and leisure venues in Northern Europe and the lakes are a big part of our offering – they’re even in the name!,” says Louisa.

“Otterbine has certainly helped us achieve the aesthetics we want to

Resort chooses two fountains to complement natural beauty of two prominent lakes

present to all our guests while being environmentally-friendly meaning we don’t need to use chemicals to keep the water clean.”

Otterbine, exclusively distributed by Reesink Turfcare in the UK, replaced the resort’s old unit with a 15HP Polaris giant fountain, which combines fucntionality with a striking geyser-type water pattern. With the option of adding a High Voltage or LED Fountain Glo Light system, it creates beautiful displays at night too.

Louisa says: “We have a Lakeview Suite, which comprises three event rooms overlooking a lake, and having the Polaris fountain positioned there creates an important aspect for business delegates. It has been a talking point with all our guests as it really adds to the overall ambiance.”

In addition, Wyboston Lakes purchased a 5HP Gemini fountain for the first time to install as a centre piece in the East

Lake opposite the Gravel Pit Brasserie. Part of the Otterbine’s Concept 3 range, it offers incredible aeration strength and an attractive display.

With high oxygen transfer rates and pumping ability of up to 242m3/hr, customers can be guaranteed with clear and healthy water when the Concept 3 range is in charge, as Louisa confirms: “The water is crystal clear and the impressive sprays compliment the lakes’

natural beauty so we’ve got the full package now.”

Both the Gemini and the Polaris are energy-efficient, manufactured from corrosion-resistant, durable high grade stainless steel and provide a natural control for algae, aquatic weeds and odours without the use of chemicals.

This was an important consideration, as together with WildLife Trust, Wyboston Lakes maintains a nature reserve that can be enjoyed by all and has an active policy of planting trees to support this ecosystem.

Louisa concludes: “Otterbine complements our ethos and has done for many years so it was only natural to choose them again. We’re very pleased with the results.”

New product launched to breathe new life into the garden!

• 40% of homeowners experience low water pressure daily

• New TapBoost boosts water flow to between 7 and 11 litres per minute depending on incoming flow

• Can be installed at various points in a household, including garden taps

Poor water pressure and flow isn’t just a problem for inside the house – it can be an issue for the outdoors too, making watering the plants a great feat!

And with poor water pressure and flow affecting 40% of household across the UK, the struggle is felt by green-fingered gardeners up and down the country.

Although poor water performance can be a real nuisance for homeowners, installing a pump to improve the water flow throughout the whole house can feel like an overkill when only one tap or outlet is underperforming.

To combat this, Salamander Pumps, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of domestic water pumps, has announced the launch of a brand-new pump, TapBoost, to offer a cost-effective solution to boost the water flow of a single tap or outlet, offering a solution to ensuring you get that extra performance from your garden hose

Designed to boost water flow to between 7 and 11 litres per minute, dependent on incoming flow, TapBoost can be fitted at multiple locations around the home –including outdoor taps.

TapBoost is also incredibly quiet and can be fitted into any plumbing

system in a home, making the solution extremely simple for homeowners.

Gareth Richards, Technical Director at Salamander Pumps, said: “We’re really excited to launch this product to the market, as there’s no other quite like it. We’ve specifically designed TapBoost to offer a costeffective solution for homeowners who have one main problem point on their property, where they want to improve their water performance, but where a whole-house solution may not be necessary. We can’t wait to see the reaction from our customers!”

Padded straps on Cooper Pegler Classic and Series 2000 knapsacks heighten comfort and cut body stress

rofessional knapsack specialists Cooper Pegler are introducing padded straps to its Classic and Series 2000 models to heighten operator comfort and limit body strain during use.

Many of the go-to knapsack models across the popular brand include ergonomically tailored harnesses to

channel loading forces in a way that limits stresses on the body.

The latest advance from manufacturer Hozelock-Exel, which follows extensive trialling, further enhances operator safety and protection to include cushioned strapping on Cooper Pegler’s Classic and Series 2000 knapsack models.

“This is a global initiative,” says Allan

Wainwright, Hozelock-Exel’s UK Sales Manager, “which aims to make our knapsack brands fully inclusive for all spray operatives.”

The cushioned strapping is introduced at a time when more sports venues and amenity sites are reducing the quantity of treatment liquids they apply in a bid to improve their green credentials.

50 GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | January/February 2023 SPRAYERS & SPRAYING
P

Golf course greens teams report they are using knapsacks increasingly for spot-spray weed control, a practice that cuts the quantity of liquid applied significantly.

More knapsack hand spraying raises the importance of operator comfort to new levels, therefore.

“Those who spend a full day knapsack spraying will find the new cushioned straps more comfortable,” Allan adds,

“reducing the stresses and strains possible on the body during extensive sessions in the field.”

The strapping is understood to be available on new knapsacks from March 2023 but models already in use can be retrofitted with the accessory once launched.

Challenging Automower ‘Eco’ Installation

I

n early 2022 the team at Ben Burgess Beeston took on a challenging Husqvarna Automower® installation for a customer from the king’s Lynn area. Working alongside the customer and their landscaper, they were able to assist in creating a perfectly maintained garden.

Groundscare sales advisor Lee Cooper and Service Technician James Hoare spoke with us about the challenges and experiences surrounding the installation.

“When we initially visited the site, it was completely bare. With the assistance of the Area Business Manager from Husqvarna James, we worked with the customer Mark and their landscaper to build a picture of what they were hoping to achieve, to ensure we could deliver the perfect finish. We settled on providing two Automower® 430X GPS enabled machines to cover each side of the garden, meaning that the machines wouldn’t need to cross any of the ornate stonework being laid and would deliver the right finish in a shorter timescale.

Technician James programmed the machines to operate during the night, allowing the customer freedom of the garden during the day. Both Automowers® were programmed with a geofence anti-theft function to protect the machines and were then linked to Mark’s phone, allowing him complete

control over them remotely from anywhere in the world.

The installation was a challenging one, because the turf had been freshly laid. We couldn’t risk damaging the new turf, so we had to do the whole job without using our usual power tools. Instead we used pegs and turf irons to achieve the correct finish, making sure the customer could see no trace of the installation. It was great for us to be able to learn and refine our techniques with Automower® installation and this project provided the perfect opportunity for an ‘Eco’ install.

We’ve since been back in touch with the customer and he’s very happy with the results.

When we initially visited the site, it was completely bare. With the assistance of the Area Business Manager from Husqvarna James, we worked with the customer Mark and their landscaper to build a picture of what they were hoping to achieve, to ensure we could deliver the perfect finish.

This job was unlike anything we had taken on before. The scale of the garden itself proved a challenge when having to install the perimeter cable by hand, whilst negotiating various obstacles such as numerous trees and boarders. We also had to ensure that the machines could run as close to flower beds and patio’s as possible, which proved difficult some boarders only partially in place. A lot of careful judgement was required. The biggest benefit of a manual

install is that machine’s accuracy is perfect, meaning that the customer has very little maintenance to attend to. With power tools an installation of this size would have taken less than a day to complete but with an ‘Eco’ installation like this it was completed in two and a half days, and the result is astonishing.”

INFINICUT’s mark the start of the ‘Electric Era’ for the University of Nottingham

Marking the start of a shift over to more battery-powered equipment, the University of Nottingham are now the proud owners of three 26” INFINICUT® FX mowers. Along with completing the daily mowing on the campuses two cricket squares and bowling green, the purchase of additional UltraGroomer™ and ThatchMaster™ cassettes from the TMSystem™ means that the grounds team can now undertake multiple maintenance tasks – all with reduced hand-arm vibration and fuel costs.

In charge of the maintenance is Interim Grounds Manager Greg Smith, who specified the investment in the INFINICUT’s, delivered by George Browns in March 2022. “Sustainability is something that’s now at the heart of a lot of the decision making we do here at the university, but switching to electric is only an option if the equipment is up to the job” explains Greg. “With mowing a daily activity, this was an important step for us and, while we explored the alternatives, the INFINICUT® with its excellent battery life and quality of cut was the perfect fit for us.”

“Hand-arm vibration and noise are massive issues in our industry and these were things that improved instantly for the team with the purchase of the INFINICUT’s – they can’t believe how quiet they are! In a relatively short period of time, we are already also noticing the benefits in terms of big savings on our fuel costs.”

To get even more return from the three 26” Fixed Head machines, the University also purchased a set of

UltraGroomer™ and ThatchMaster™ cassettes from the renowned TMSystem™ collection. Featuring over 80 tungsten carbide tipped blades, the UltraGroomer™ improves the plants immediate environment by removing Poa ingress, lateral growth and organic matter to enhance the movement of oxygen, moisture and nutrients. Also designed to prevent thatch accumulations, the ThatchMaster™ utilises 2mm thick tungsten blades to cut through stolons and rhizomes in fine turf.

“We specified these cassettes as part

of the package and all of the training and support we’ve had from Oliver Hall at INFINICUT® and our local dealer George Browns has been fantastic. We’ve been passing over the cricket squares and bowling green with these once a week and the results have been superb.” Greg adds, “We’re a high wear site, with lots of community usage on top of that by the students and the combination of the INFINICUT’s and the cassettes mean that the facilities are healthier and presenting better than ever!” www.infinicut.com

Quality cutting solutions

With the warmer weather approaching and spring growth kicking in, Vanmac have a wide range of quality solutions to cutting around the course, thanks to the Progressive range of trailed and mounted rotary finishing mowers. Progressive have a long and illustrious track record for designing and manufacturing innovative mowers, ideally suited to the golf course thanks to their unrivalled contour following ability. Of particular interest - and available in the UK for the first time - is tri-deck TDR-X.

The three independently floating decks of the TDR-X promise to closely follow the contours of the ground, without scalping, offering a combined cutting width of 3.2m and an easily adjustable cutting height range from 9.5mm to 84.5mm. Along with other machines in the Progressive range, the TDR-X takes advantage of Progressive’s Pro Lift-N-Turn™ technology, allowing the operator to temporarily raise the decks, with the PTO still engaged, to make turning easier and increase overall productivity.

Another popular choice for greenkeepers is the Pro-Flex 120. Offering a cutting width of 3m, the Pro-Flex is the most widely used trailed contour finishing mower. It features graduated cut height options of between 25mm and 76mm for uniform

quality and ultimate versatility on different areas around the course.

For larger areas, the Progressive TDR-15 Tri-Deck roller mower offers an impressive cutting width of over 4.5m! The height of cut can go as low as 12mm on the TDR-15, while full width rollers help to smooth the turf leaving a pleasing striped finish in its wake. Its superior cut quality is delivered by high-lift rotary blades that create a vacuum, lifting the plant up for a clean and uniform cut. Clippings are then evenly dispersed over the rollers.

The full range of Progressive mowers are now available from Vanmac Ltd.

COMPLETE VERSATILITY

For Nick Hosking it’s Woodworks by name and woodworks by nature as he tackles all manner of tree surgery tasks – with the trusted assistance of two GreenMech woodchippers! The most recent addition to his fleet is an EVO 205D SAFE-Trak, which was purchased on the GreenMech stand at APF in September, and sits alongside the QuadTrak 160 for complete versatility on both domestic and commercial jobs.

Nick established the company 20 years ago and works with, and as, a subcontractor for a number of clients in and around Flintshire, North Wales and NW England including large-scale construction contracts for Hanson UK and the Breedon Group. “I’ve used chippers from GreenMech for the last seven years now, starting with a turntable QuadTrak 160 and trailer which caught my eye at APF many years ago and gives me enhanced manoeuvrability and flexibility for tasks on the kerbside” explains Nick. “Impressed with the performance of this machine, I then invested in a SAFE-Trak 19-28 as a bigger, more versatile workhorse.”

It was again at APF that Nick sealed the deal on his latest purchase, a 205D SAFE-Trak from GreenMech’s EVO series, purchased through dealers GA Groundcare. “Going from the 19-28 model to the 205D SAFE-Trak was a natural progression – this machine is newer, bigger, more reliable and more powerful.” At its heart is a Stage-V Compliant 50hp Kubota diesel engine, delivering powerful chipping performance for bulky brash and timber of up to 8”. Underneath the robust, steel chassis is GreenMech’s patented SAFE-Trak system which

incorporates two independently adjustable track legs providing ground clearance of up to 530mm and allows the safe traversing of slopes up to 35o.

“With GreenMech you know you’re going to get machines that do exactly what they say on the tin. Having said that, there’s a few new features on the EVO 205D I really like namely the more powerful throw and the Smart Sense controller which automatically

reduces engine revs and then ramps them up again when you start feeding material in. It’s also much quicker and easier to service. Since taking delivery in October 2022 it’s been on jobs of all shapes and sizes, most recently a roadside clearance project for Hanson, and it’s taken everything in its stride.”

He continues, “Together with the performance, the thing that keeps me coming back to GreenMech is the people. I know if I come across an issue, there are three or four people I can phone who are all very knowledgeable and will go out of their way to resolve it for you. Back up support and service like that goes a long way in this industry.”

Is there any value in using a soil penetrant?

Soil penetrants can form a vital part of our integrated turf management plans. To understand this we need to understand what a soil penetrant is.

oil penetrants reduce surface tension and facilitate downward movement of water. This technology improves the speed at which water infiltrates from the soil surface into the soil profile. It is important to note that non-ionic soil surfactants do not change the soils physical properties. It enables water to move as quickly as the soils physical properties will allow. Primary and secondary drainage systems will improve the soils physical properties and form a key part of managing soil moisture. Primary drainage removes excess water from the profile, whilst secondary drainage creates the connectivity of the surface to the primary drainage system. Drainage infiltration should also be supported with an adequate aeration plan for your soil type as well as a top-dressing strategy. Aeration should only be carried out in conducive conditions to avoid deformation of the surface by machinery tracks and the additional compaction in saturated conditions. Altering the soils drainage ability will maximise the benefit of soil penetrants.

S

Why do we need to worry about surface and

soil moisture?

During periods of prolonged wetness our soils will be come saturated and turf health will start to deteriorate. Turfgrass and soil microbes are aerobic which means it is vital we manage the air to water ratio in our soils. Visual symptoms of saturation stress can include a decline in sward density, reduced rooting and plant health

Aeration should only be carried out in conducive conditions to avoid deformation of the surface by machinery tracks and the additional compaction in saturated conditions.

(chlorosis) and an increase in thatch due to lack of decomposition. Turfgrass stress can then lead to disease outbreaks, surface algae, weed and moss invasion in a thinning sward, and potential PPN damage.

Penetrants form an integral part of our integrated turf management plans by keeping our surfaces drier and can be supported by the use of appropriate dew management technologies. By reducing surface moisture and increasing soil infiltration we can improve air to water ratios in the soil,

optimising soil health and supporting organic matter decomposition. In turn we will see a denser sward coverage less susceptible to surface algae, weed and moss invasion and a stronger and healthier turfgrass and root system. This will improve playing conditions throughout the year as well as overall surface performance.

So quite simply yes, there is value in using a soil penetrant to reduce surface tension and improve infiltration in the soil profile, as long as this is supported with good aeration strategies. Always remember when your soil is saturated, you can only move that water if it has somewhere to go and that is why drainage is imperative.

Choosing a linemarker

The variety of marking machines on the market can be very confusing. With over 60 years experience, Sportsmark, the sports equipment and line marking specialists pride themselves on the impartial advice they can give to customers on their range.

Spray marking machines are clean producing top quality lines and are less messy than transfer wheel markers, but washing through after each use and charging them every night are essential.

Transfer wheel markers have the advantage that there’s nothing much to go wrong, are very low maintenance and use a less expensive paint.

There’s no point in buying a Range Rover if all you do is pop to the shops weekly, and the same can be said of line marking machines. If you are

only marking one or 2 football pitches once a week, then a robust but lightweight machine is all that is required, and none is better than the Ultima. Modern polyethylene technology offers a fully recyclable, high quality, robust and durable marker at a very competitive price. It can also be stored upright by folding away the handle reducing storage space and better still…. IT WON’T RUST!!!

TTS-800 SERIES ROTORS

Professional groundsman with lots of line marking prefer a spray machine and none is better than the Titan. The Titan is hand built, well balanced and robust. This high specification spray marker that combines all the needs of the professional groundsman into a single machine and offers exceptional value for money. The Titan, designed by groundsmen for groundsmen.

Merchant Taylors’ chooses

ISEKI

Richard Ayling, Grounds Manager at Merchant Taylors’ School in Middlesex, has praised his new fleet of ISEKI tractors for helping the grounds team maintain 300 acres of estate.

MMerchant Taylors’ is an independent day school for boys, aged 11 to 18. Since its foundation, in 1561, the school has been widely-regarded as one of the best schools in England, providing an all-round education of the highest quality. One of England’s “great nine schools” its reputation today remains that of a “top” boys’ school.

From the classroom to the sporting facilities – no stone is left unturned.

“We try and give the boys the best experience they can in whatever sport they want to enjoy,” said Richard. “We have over 80 acres of sport areas, and that sits in nearly 300 acres of estate including the preparatory school grounds. This is why we need to invest in the best machinery.”

Richard, who has been at Mer chant Taylors’ for 26 years and oversees a team of 10 members of staff, explained that up until recently he was tied into a 5-year contract hire for the school’s larger equipment. That contract was coming to an end, and he began to research the market.

“My plan was to raise the standard of the equipment and when searching for tractors I was led to ISEKI,” he said. “I was very impressed with the demo we had from RT Machinery, and the IQ transmission was one of the main reasons we purchased them.”

Richard purchased two ISEKI TG6507’s and a TG6687 which both benefit from the innovative dual-clutch IQ gearbox. It combines the ultimate comfortable automatic operation with the advantages of manual gear changes. Specific to the IQ range of TG tractors the Headland management controls are also perfect when working with turf maintenance implements. The PTO Stop/Start function allows you to stop the PTO when the link arms are raised for ease of operation. PTO Stop in reverse lifts the arms to a pre-set height if reverse gear is selected to prevent any damage to implements. These are fully adjustable.

Richard also purchased the ISEKI TH5370, which is ideal for areas where lightweight machinery is required, and he mainly uses this on the school’s synthetic sports pitches.

“We’ve really put all four ISEKI tractors to the test since

we have had them and they have come through with flying colours,” he said. “The tractors allow us to use a wide variety of implements including blowers, spreaders, seeders, brushes and scarifiers – the flexibility is brilliant, and they are really helpful when we are renovating.

“I also like having the ability to adjust the height of the arms at the back when attaching implements, the PTO is great, and the inside of the cab is really comfortable. They may be compact in size, but they are powerful and have a lot of oomph. They are all stage V as well which ticks our credentials in terms of reducing carbon footprint.

“Everything just works for me and the team, the support and service from RT Machinery has been outstanding” continued Richard. “Everyone had a big say in the choice of machinery. It was a long discussion, and we got the decision right by choosing ISEKI.”

Harness the power of Attraxor for a range of needs

FORMULATED FOR THOSE WHO NEED FAST RESULTS

Using an innovative formulation for fast leaf absorption, the product provides almost instant results, making it ideal for those who need to act fast. Prohexadione, the active substance in Attraxor®, is activated once diluted in water at low pH so growth regulation occurs rapidly following application.

SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE AGAINST POA ANNUA PIONEERING

Poa annua is a notorious problem for UK turf managers and greenkeepers who are looking to create perfect conditions for sporting or leisure activities. Attraxor® limits the spread of Poa annua by reducing seedhead production by up to 38% and physiologically weakening but not killing the plant.

LONGITUDINAL GROWTH REDUCTION TO SAVE TIME AND MONEY

Attraxor® contains prohexadione calcium,

an active ingredient that reduces turf height by up to 30% and clippings by up to 70% following one application.

By reducing longitudinal turf growth, Attraxor® reduces the frequency of mowing, increases sward density and root formation, and greens up the turf. This results in better turf, but also savings on cost, clipping rates and CO2 emissions from frequent use of petrol lawnmowers.

LONG TERM RESULTS

Attraxor® produces a consistent effect for up to four weeks after application, so there is no need to adjust the dose rate, regardless of the cutting height. It is effective on all cool season grass species, such as Agrostis spp., Festuca spp., Lolium perenne, Holcus lanatus and Poa pratensis.

BASF’s expert range of products can be tailored to meet the demands of all turf landscapes, for groundskeepers, greenkeepers, golf course managers and landscape architects, helping to protect the land from diseases, pests and weeds to keep it in tip top condition through every season.
