FOREST CABIN Modern cottage for family recreation offers relaxation and peace in the woods near Prague. In spring 2020, a refined couple came to our studio with a vision of a modest house that would provide them with a peaceful retreat in nature, an escape from the everyday hustle and bustle of the city. A comfortable place where the trees rustle instead of the trams and contact with nature is immediate.

The area they have chosen for their cottage has a unique atmosphere. It is not a comfortable asphalt road that leads to the place, but a quite harsh road, which in itself transforms the perception. Further away from the worries of the big city, closer to nature, we switch to a different mode. The local regulations defined the maximum building area and height of the building, limiting the client’s brief. The archetypal form of the cabin was chosen with respect to the built environment and its verticality emphasises the contrast between the stability of the earth and the freedom of the sky. There are beautiful tall conifers in the surroundings which fascinated us and whose pattern is reflected in the facade. It is made up of dark aluminium shingles and its shape resembles a pinecone. The aluminium surface of the façade guarantees easy maintenance and durability and fulfills the essential requirement for practicality.

"There are beautiful tall conifers in the surroundings which fascinated us and whose pattern is reflected in the facade."

Belonging to nature is supported by the glass sliding surfaces that connect the living area of the interior with the surroundings and also wonderfully expand the feeling of space inside the cottage. The large windows not only bring a beautiful view, but also plenty of light for the investor, who enjoys painting in her cottage. The brief was to create a space that exudes the cosiness and warmth of home. Therefore, oak was used extensively in the interior, specifically for the flooring, fireplace wall, dining table and chairs. The

structural CLT spruce panels remained visible in the bedroom and staircase. This natural material brings a warm feeling of home to the interior and saves on tiling costs. CLT panels also have advantages in structural properties - the small structural depth allows for large spans and has a high load-bearing capacity. Their small thickness combined with good thermal insulation leads to a more spacious interior. The construction was completely designed and realized by 3AE, a company specialized in wooden buildings made of solid panels of Czech wood. 5

EDITOR'S CHOICE The main theme of the cottage is well-being and relaxation and the operational needs had to be subordinated to this. We integrated the kitchen into the living area so that it would act as a natural part of it. Therefore, we placed a bookcase above it, growing into the ceiling, and for the cabinet parts we chose a unifying oak wood motif with the same profile as the wall by the fireplace. The dining table was naturally incorporated between the kitchen cabinets. The cottage is a synergy of contemporary design, respect for nature, and practical use of space. Even in a small area, it is possible to create a space for comfort, relaxation, and artistic creation. Despite its miniature size, the original nearby cottage was a place where the owners felt content. So, when designing the new cottage, the owners had confidence from the beginning in a small space that was welcoming and cosy.

EDITOR'S CHOICE The Passivhaus Trust UK Conference - Credit: Ian Skinner.

ALUPROF AT THE PASSIVHAUS CONFERENCE By Wojciech Brożyna - MD Aluprof UK Organised by the UK’s Passivhaus Trust, the 2023 UK Passivhaus Conference was a hybrid event held at McEwan Hall on The University of Edinburgh campus on the 16th & 17th of October. Over the two day conference over 600 speakers and delegates explored the adaptability of Passivhaus, its implementation and benefits over a diverse range and scale of projects around the UK, plus its future applicability for all homes throughout Scotland. Aluprof were delighted, once again, to support the event as a sponsor taking the lead when it comes to the specification of high thermal performance windows, doors and facade systems used in Passivhaus construction. The event was attended by Paul Sherman, Aluprof Sales Consultant and Neil Garner, Aluprof Major Projects Consultant. 8

‘Scotland leads the way’ was the theme for the Passivhaus Conference, the biggest held in the UK to date. There was a great deal of interest at the event following Scotland. Parliament's decision to adopt a version of the standard next year. Keynote speaker Patrick Harvie MSP, ‘Scottish Government Minister for Zero Carbon Buildings, Active Travel and Tenants' Rights’, gave an update on how the ‘Scottish equivalent to the Passivhaus standard’ policy is developing. Leading the way, Scotland is the first nation to adopt the Passivhaus standard, or its equivalent, previous adoption by Brussels, Vancouver, Massachusetts, and Heidelberg have only been adopted on a municipality level. The Passivhaus standard is not new to Scotland, it was recognised some time ago that upfront investment in the standard across new construction was beneficial in the long term with significant benefits to health and the reduction of carbon emissions. The conference showcased a wide range of new and completed projects which included schools and social housing across the region.

"‘Scotland leads the way’ was the theme for the Passivhaus Conference, the biggest held in the UK to date."

Neil Garner Aluprof Major Projects Consultant speaking at the Passivhaus Trust UK conference.

Sarah Lewis, Research & Policy Director, Passivhaus Trust, commented on the growth of school projects adopting the standard, “An innovative funding mechanism from the Scottish Futures Trust has encouraged the building of schools to the Passivhaus standard in Scotland. Projects receiving funding need to meet a clean energy target. Funding may reduced based on any performance gap postcompletion. The Passivhaus standard effectively eliminates the performance gap, de-risking the securing of funding. It has been impressive how swiftly the industry, supply chain, and clients have adjusted to delivering to the Passivhaus standard in the education sector.” With the growth of projects adopting the standard, Aluprof were on hand at the Passivhaus exhibition area to introduce their two curtain wall systems and two window and door systems that carry Passivhaus certification: Aluprof’s curtain wall system MB-SR50N Hi+, offers a slim capped mullion transom system of just 50mm. The system uses polyethylene profiles to offer high levels of insulation, allowing the system to reach a Uf from 0.59 W/(m2K). The high level of thermal insulation is coupled with excellent weather resistance of up to 1,200 Pa for both airtightness and watertightness. Aluprof’s curtain wall system MB-TT50 further enhances the abilities of the MB-SR50N Hi+ by allowing a greater thickness of glass to be accommodated. The system uses polyethylene profiles to offer high levels of insulation allowing the system to reach a class leading Uf from 0.5 W/(m2K). The high level of thermal insulation is coupled with an improved weather resistance of up to 1,350 Pa for airtightness and up to 1,800 for watertightness.

Paul Sherman, Aluprof Sales Consultant and Neil Garner, Aluprof Major Projects Consultant, who represented Aluprof UK at the Passivhaus Trust UK conference.

Aluprof UK takes pride in supplying Passivhaus certified windows and curtain walling systems for one of the world's largest Passivhaus-rated student accommodation projects, nearing completion. Situated at the Frenchay Campus, the new accommodation building for the University of the West of England (UWE) spans approximately 65,000m2 and offers 2,250 new student residences. Additionally, Aluprof systems and products are featured in the ambitious 'Greenhaus' project, set to become the largest Passivhaus social housing scheme in Manchester and the North West of England. This nine-storey development, located in Chapel Street, Salford, comprises 96 affordable homes. All Passivhaus enquiries received by Aluprof are dealt with by experienced technicians who can help choose the right configuration for any project. As important as the right choice of product, Aluprof are also able to offer design assistance for the structure surrounding the system to ensure reveal cold bridging is reduced an absolute minimum. Aluprof are proud to be one of Europe's largest aluminium systems companies. Specification support is available through the company’s website at aluprof.co.uk, directly from their UK head office in Altrincham or from their London office at the Building Design Centre by phoning +44 (0) 161 941 4005.

Natural light becomes a design priority and aesthetic protagonist, so much so that the walls of the house are reduced to a minimum, 70% of the habitable surface is occupied by panoramic windows.

"The aim of the project is to meet the needs of modern life in a country house"

The interior design provides for the distinction between the various rooms through the decoration of vertical walls with different finishes: quartzite and marble panels stand out in the living room and in the master bedroom, a bas-relief in a natural tone characterizes the kitchen area, a unique work of Ukrainians master craftsmen. A real design jewel is the master bedroom with walk-in closet, illuminated by the large windows to the south and east. INTERNATIONAL TIMBER PROVIDES SUSTAINABLE ACCOYA® CLADDING FOR CONTEMPORARY FARMHOUSE

Sustainable Accoya cladding from International Timber has been used for the construction of a self-build farmhouse in Salisbury, designed by awardwinning architect practice Adam Knibb Architects. Waldens Farm is a striking four-bed property located in beautiful West Grimstead with views of the surrounding picturesque landscape. Accoya timber cladding from International Timber features on the exterior of the house alongside traditional stone and contemporary glass, resulting in a truly stunning build. With a strong farming past to the area, the site’s rural context was a key factor in material selection. The cladding supplied by International Timber ties the new house into its agricultural setting and the existing barns and outbuildings on site. The local Jewson branch worked in close collaboration with Adam Knibb Architects and the builder to design and specify 125mm and 150mm of Accoya, cutting it into three different widths. This was then used for the external cladding of the building to create the biophilic aesthetic and continuous inside-outside connection that the architect wanted to achieve. A counter batten was placed behind the Accoya cladding to maintain ventilation and drainage of any water and condensation. Insect mesh was also fitted to prevent insects and other pests entering into the cavity or gaps around the cladding or ventilation gaps. In addition, International Timber supplied Accoya for use on the ceiling inside the 14

property as well as to create two doors and door frames. Jon East, Timber Development Manager at the Jewson Whiteparish branch, said: “Jewson was successful in securing the contract to supply the Accoya cladding for Waldens Farm due to our close working relationship with both the client/builder and the team at International Timber Parkend. The team there were, as always, really helpful and easy to work with.” Bernie Roberts, National Product Manager for Cladding Solutions at International Timber, added: “We are thrilled to be chosen as a supplier for this incredible build. Timber cladding is often specified for self-build projects due to its aesthetic qualities, biophilic design, natural durability and ease of working, and this project was no different. “Accoya is a great sustainable wood, which is a huge factor as to why it was chosen here. It also has many other great benefits, including the fact it is incredibly durable, has a 50-year above-ground warranty, and is trusted not to visibly swell, shrink or distort, with minimal movement. The fact it also provides a fantastic finish is another great reason to always opt for Accoya in projects such as these.” For more information on International Timber and its Accoya range, visit www.internationaltimber.com. BETTER STANDS INITIATIVE Better Stands is kbb Birmingham’s parent company Infoma’s landmark campaign to reduce the waste that stands at exhibitions can create. The team is working with customers to phase out all disposable stands at EMEA events by 2024. Better Stands also shows how sustainable business can be better business too. Reusable structures not only reduce waste, but they can reduce the time it takes to construct and take down stands, reduce the cost of design and construction and allow for investment in higher quality and more successful stands. All kbb Birmingham exhibitors are encouraged to either reuse or recycle at the end of the show, to help create a more sustainable event. The Used Kitchen Company (TUKC) will once again be partnering with the event to help exhibitors sell their displays ahead of the show to encourage a more sustainable event, and to make a valuable contribution towards recycling within the kitchen industry.

INNOVATION AWARDS March 2024 marks a decade of the kbb Birmingham Innovation Awards. Now in its tenth year, the Innovation Awards, in partnership with Blum, will be back to highlight the most creative and groundbreaking solutions from brands in the sector. HOW THE KITCHEN TAP INDUSTRY CAN HELP THE COST OF LIVING CRISIS

With energy bills rising and the cost of living eating into household budgets, finding ways to minimise expenditure is a priority.

AVERAGE ENERGY USAGE IN HOMES The average family home uses around a fifth of its energy heating water. For those in flats, the percentage is higher. It’s not just the hot water coming from the tap either – putting the kettle on at regular intervals uses bursts of power to heat your water. Surprisingly, around two-thirds of people overfill a kettle during use, meaning there’s tons of wasted energy.

SO, WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? The kitchen tap industry has developed several solutions to make taps more energy efficient. One of the most popular options in homes in the current market is a boiling water tap. While most people choose these taps primarily for convenience, there are a number of benefits, including energy savings. Manufacturers have designed boiling water taps (or as they are otherwise known, 3-in-1 or 4-in-1 taps) to be more efficient than your average kitchen faucet. They are made to instantly boil water without needing to wait for a kettle. Plus, you don’t need to wait several minutes for a pan of water to boil on the hob. Not only does this save on electricity or gas to heat the water, households only use the volume of water needed. So, less is wasted. 26

HOW DO BOILING WATER TAPS HELP THE COST OF LIVING CRISIS? If you use the kettle numerous times a day, this constant on-and-off usage while boiling too much water wastes energy and costs more in the long term. Switching to a 3-in-1 or 4-in-1 tap reduces this. While there is the initial investment of installing this system, the overriding benefit of reducing costs can outweigh the price. There are numerous other uses for a boiling water tap, such as sterilising, cleaning cookware and making soups. So it’s a versatile addition to the home and can prove a handy investment while helping reduce home-running costs. 2024 KITCHEN TRENDS Elliott Fairlie, product lead at Bushboard, outlines the latest trends set to dominate kitchen design in 2024 STAINLESS STEEL “Stainless steel was once associated with industrial kitchens, but developments in kitchen design means that a refreshed approach to the finish is taking over. The material recently hit the spotlight following the release of the David Beckham’s new documentary on Netflix, where we caught a glimpse of the Beckham’s family’s kitchen. It features an abundance of stainless steel – resulting in it becoming one of the fastest emerging kitchen trends for 2024. 28

“The Beckham’s kitchen combines a classic Sharker style cabinet door and dark stone worktops with a stainless steel splashback. Complemented by shelving and a vast kitchen island made of rustic wood, the space balances warm and cool tones beautifully. “Stainless steel’s resurgence is thanks to its clean, polished aesthetic which elevates any kitchen. Not only does it pair well with warm materials, but it can also look gorgeous when paired with cool tone stones, like white marbles and blue cabinetry.

BATHROOMS & KITCHENS

"using dark, deep-veined marble finishes across worksurfaces and splashbacks, creates a lavish, luxurious design"

“Stainless steel can be an expensive material, so if you’re working to a budget, it’s worth considering an aluminium option which offers a similar finish. Alloy Brushed Steel, for example, looks identical to stainless steel but is a fraction of the price.

RICH AND WARM “Warm, rich colours like plum, burgundy, dark blue and brown are gaining popularity in kitchen design due to their ability to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The palette embodies moody, dramatic warmth, with colours possessing dark undertones which create a luxurious feel. This colour palette can be dialled up or down, depending on personal preference and style. “If you’re looking to embrace the warm, deep colour palette fully, then pairing dark cabinet doors with equally rich worksurfaces and splashbacks creates the ultimate opulent scheme. Dark wood

worksurfaces add texture, infusing the space with a finish that takes inspiration from the natural world. Alternatively, using dark, deep-veined marble finishes across worksurfaces and splashbacks, creates a lavish, luxurious design. “For those not ready to commit to a rich colour palette across the entire kitchen, consider using your worksurfaces and splashbacks to create balance. If you prefer a more neutral colour for your cabinets, then incorporating a wood, patterned splashback could be a great option to add interest and depth. Balancing deep kitchen cabinets with a lighter worksurface can bring balance and keep the space looking light and airy. 29

BATHROOMS & KITCHENS

easy-to-maintain space. The options available span both dark and light marbles, as well as light and deep veining, meaning there’s something to suit any taste.

HIGH DRAMA MARBLE “Natural stones, such as marble, are a popular option for worktops, splashbacks and flooring due to the luxury finish they provide, and this is set to continue well into the new year. The veining present creates movements and direction in the space, in a way that other materials cannot, resulting in a tranquil, clean aesthetic that is perfect for creating harmony in the home. “A material known for its high maintenance nature and susceptibility to chips and stains means that, some homeowners are reluctant to include it in their space as they’re not ready to deal with the upkeep. There’s also the high price point to contend with, which means it’s not always within budget. “Opting for a marble finish worktop or splashback, rather than the solid raw material, has its advantages. You can achieve your desired look within budget, while having an easy-to-clean and 30

LAYERS OF BLACK “A black kitchen can seem like a daring option, but when executed well it can create a highly impactful design, which is why black kitchens are set to continue to rise in popularity in 2024. “Not only are designers incorporating black kitchen cabinets into designs, but they’re layering the scheme up with black worksurfaces and splashbacks to reflect a moody, considered feel. “I’d recommend playing around with texture and colour to keep the space interesting and to avoid the different kitchen elements blending into one another. For example, dark Grasmere oak and Laurent marble worksurfaces are both effective options for incorporating texture into a black kitchen.

BATHROOMS & KITCHENS

“If you’re not ready to commit to a fully dark scheme, there’s the option to welcome lighter worktops and splashbacks into the scheme too. Grey marbles are the perfect option for this as they introduce a lighter hue while still playing into the colour palette nicely – the same can be said for cooltone woods.

TEXTURE “Incorporating texture is a popular tactic used by interior designers to elevate a space and add depth and interest. In 2024, they’ll be an even greater focus on welcoming textural finishes through work surfaces, splashbacks, cabinets, accessories and furniture. “Welcoming tactile materials into the kitchen can transform the look and feel of the space, adding visual interest and flow. In both colourful and neutral kitchens, texture breaks up block colour and can be a useful tool for zoning the space. “Combining different materials is an effective way to introduce variety, without committing to strong colours. Pairing exposed brick with natural wood and stone finishes adds variations in surfaces. “If you’re looking to create a statement through texture, carrying a fluted-effect splashback across your entire kitchen can create a gorgeous feature. Paired with neutrals, such as beiges, whites and blacks, it creates a timeless design with added interest.” www.bushboard.co.uk

LIGHT AND DARK CONTRAST AS THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THIS LUXURY BATHROOM Marble is an excellent aesthetic choice for spaces like bathrooms. Selecting the right marble can transform this area into oasis of comfort, luxury, and well-being. The design of this suggestive and modern bathroom is based on the contrast between light and dark, glossy and opaque surfaces. The contrast between the two colours enhances the balance created by the veins of both marbles. The shower has a strong impact and appears to be the visual fulcrum, thanks to the use of Grand Antique marble with the book-matched technique. The Grand Antique is a brecciated black marble from France, suitable for interior spaces, that gives a distinctive and unique touch to each surface. It stands out for the strong contrast of its black background interspersed with plays of white veins. Inside the shower, there is a niche made with Arabescato Corchia marble, an element that creates balance and harmony with the entire space. Arabescato Corchia, is a fine-grained brecciated marble

extracted in the Monte Corchia basin, in Tuscany (Italy). It has ovule motifs with grey-blue veins that allow it to be described as a breccia with a white background with irregular veins. Its characteristics make it ideal for enriching any environment. Every detail of this bathroom is a testimony to “Made in Italy” excellence. In this room, Italian craftsmanship and marble come together to create a truly unique environment. The bookmatched surface is an ode to the harmony between human creativity and the beauty of nature. Our vision and experience are at your service. In Pistore Marmi, we merge artisan know-how with creativity and technological innovation, creating unique and exclusive design objects and tailor-made projects that enhance the properties and characteristics of natural and precious stones. Alongside the artisanal approach, we offer a complete service for architects and interior designers, ranging from consultancy with a problem-solving approach to support in design, selection of the most suitable marble, tailor-made creation of finished products, and assistance during the installation phase.

SOPHISTICATED TILES FROM DECOCER TO DECORATE AND PROTECT OPENCONCEPT KITCHENS Traditional kitchens have become office spaces with the function of the kitchen, dining room, and living room. Small ceramic tiles play a fundamental role due to their aesthetics and easy cleaning. Decocer offers numerous design solutions with tiles for the backsplashes of contemporary kitchens. The firm specializes in the manufacture of madeto-measure ceramic floor and wall tiles exclusively for distributors, manufacturers, and design and architecture professionals. Our homes represent a refuge where we take shelter during family moments, meetings with friends, and moments of rest. In this environment, the kitchen has acquired a fundamental role by becoming a multifunctional space that integrates the kitchen, 42

the dining room, and the living room. In the search for this balance, the use of tiles in them and on their backsplashes becomes fundamental due to their aesthetic beauty, durability, and ease of cleaning. Protecting walls from splashes, oil, water or food residues is essential, and ceramic materials offer the perfect combination of aesthetics and practicality. In this context, Decocer, which specializes in smallformat, made-to-measure ceramic pieces, offers a variety of high-added-value designs for these spaces.

BOLD PATCHWORK STYLES THAT BRING LIFE Decocer offers an extensive selection of options that follow the decorative style of patchwork, taking this technique to a new level with ceramics.

"Decocer offers numerous design solutions with tiles for the backsplashes of contemporary kitchens."

Patchwork, which consists of fusing fragments of fabric with different shapes, colors, or patterns to create distinctive designs, opens up the possibility of generating unique and lively creations by creatively fusing the concept with the use of tiles.

DIFFERENT SHAPES AND GEOMETRIES TO DIFFERENTIATE Decocer's use of small-format ceramic tiles in kitchen backsplashes involves an exploration of shapes and geometries to create exclusive patterns. By using geometric tiles such as hexagons, chevrons, pickets, or herringbone designs, a modern and sophisticated look is achieved in these areas of the home.

BEVELED METRO TILES ARE A NEW MUST Decocer proposes the use of beveled tiles, which we traditionally know from metro stations, in kitchen wainscoting, highlighting their timelessness and popularity thanks to their classic and versatile style. These ceramic pieces can be arranged traditionally or in creative patterns and different shades, offering varied options for design.

THE AUTHENTICITY OF NATURE IN CERAMICS Decocer also proposes tiles that emulate natural elements such as stone, marble, slate, or wood for the backsplashes. These materials offer an organic and welcoming aesthetic, ideal for creating atmospheres that evoke the inherent beauty of nature.

BRIGHTNESS WITH HIGH-INTENSITY GLAZED TILES Glazed or mirror-finished tiles add luminosity and depth to wainscoting, as well as reflecting and enhancing natural light, giving the environment a sense of spaciousness and vibrancy. 43

In the kitchen, the central island accommodated the cooktop on a black granite top, and received a light wood countertop, which contrasts with the brown chairs. The layout allowed more practicality and functionality to the environment, in addition to interaction between people. Residents' privacy is guaranteed in the block to the left of the entrance hall, where the intimate area is located, with three suites. The couple's bedroom received a headboard with MDF slats painted in white, a bedside table and a vintage-style dressing table. For her daughters’ bedroom, she opted for the “less is more” trend, creating a simple and peaceful setting.

LA CASA MILLERIGHE Linearity with a sea view Taking on the surrounding beauty, capturing it through light and material, surfaces and colour, before giving it back with a harmonious and evocative overall design featuring a geometric, fluid and sleek architectural design, which expresses itself through the refined linearity of the whole and the continuous perspective interplay of its components. These are the distinctive features of La Casa Millerighe, the most recent renovation and interior design project by architect Valentina Autiero, founder of the eponymous architectural practice based in Vico Equense, Naples: the property in question is a residence with sea view of 100 m2, formerly a vacation home to spend limited periods of time in, but now a family home for year-round daily living, located in the evocative context of the Sorrento peninsula. On the first site visit, the living space proved to be ideal for a typical Mediterranean vacation home for rest and relaxation, conviviality and time spent in company: limited common living space, lots of beds and the integrated use of the large panoramic wraparound terrace. 54

The presence of a square floor plan free on three of its four sides allowed for a total redistribution of the spaces with a strong and constant focus on the dynamic dialogue between the environments and the natural light they receive, an essential priority for their correct functional distribution in the new architectural and design context. The design thus tore up the old floor plan, delineating a space marked by fluid and interactive open-plan areas, where the customer's various different needs and requirements are answered perfectly thanks to unconventional interpretations of the spaces and custom made-to-measure furniture. The regular and consequent flow of parallel lines emerges as a common thread in the entire design interpretation of the space and its individual rooms and areas, which it suggests and defines through constant reference to geometries, alignments and projections: what emerges is a residence set apart by a fluid and dynamic scheme, inside which the different spaces follow on from each other with continuous connections and visual references, stylistic and chromatic.

INTERIORS & INTERIOR DESIGN

"The regular and consequent flow of parallel lines emerges as a common thread in the entire design interpretation of the space and its individual rooms and area"

In the living area itself, the slatwall panelling which occupies a significant area emerges as the undisputed protagonist of the new interpretation – architectural, stylistic and formal – of the entire residence: it is the focal point of the design and tangible common thread between the various spaces, making it possible to view the corridor leading to the bedrooms as an extension, both visual and functional, of the living area, a characteristic which is highlighted by the ceiling track lighting system.

The living area emerges as a particularly large and welcoming space, its volume standing out with the large panoramic window which dominates the entire wall and visually extends the residence towards the maritime landscape and its infinite splendour. Impalpable delimitations make it easy to define and identify the spaces dedicated to the entryway, the living area itself and the dining room, in a constant, fluid manner free of interruptions. Visually inscribed in a smaller volume but in direct spatial dialogue with the day area, the entrance hall is delineated by the storage/divider represented by the glass and wood "floating" bookshelf, and completed with the presence of large full-height cabinets, camouflaged in the same colour and finish as the walls, with the function of coat and jacket storage.

The "millerighe" slatwall panelling is structured as furnishing with an entirely containing function, as a small bar is hidden inside it: this strategic transformative design makes it possible to define a complete, accessorised space to meet numerous needs, while taking up a depth of just 10 cm. The specific position in which this piece of furniture is located – its presence also partially marks out and delimits the corridor area – lends functionality to a passageway which could otherwise be easily overlooked and makes it a focal point, at the same time completing the visual triangulation of conviviality composed of the sofa and dining table. Surrounded by the "millerighe" panelling, the TV appears in close visual dialogue with the sofa, which features soft forms and is in turn strongly connected with the panoramic view of the sea: both elements, together, define a precise relaxation subspace within the large spatial volume and scenic structure of the day area. Finally, located between the entrance and the sofa area, perfectly aligned with the large window which enjoys a spectacular view of the hills surrounding Vico Equense, is the living room table, with sleek, simple lines, at the same time enhanced and embellished by the imposing chandelier. 55

INTERIORS & INTERIOR DESIGN

white monochromatic box, the white worktop of the cooking area, containing an inset hob facing onto the living area in a mark of sharing and conviviality, is bordered by an area of large-format white porcelain tiles – interrupting the stack-bond parquet present in the rest of the space – and a white slatted soffit feature. In the context of this chromatic absolutism, the presence of the bright-orange cooker hood ducting and kitchen tap are deliberately discordant elements which lend the environment a touch of carefree vivacity.

Brutally interrupting the rhythmic and regular progress of the slatwall panelling's "millerighe" pattern are two large openings – one a doorway, the other a hatch – making it possible to insert the kitchen area into the fluid, dynamic spatial layout. This is located in the "box" formed by the slatwall panelling with a symmetrical yet inverse stylistic and visual projection: like the inside of a clean room, the colours become much lighter and the formal matrix of alignments is resumed following the same formal plot, nevertheless unwinding through new and different stylistic motifs. This environment first and foremost presents a clear, sharp simultaneous presence of different materials, suggesting and identifying the precise and clear distinction between the most purely functional area and the more strictly convivial zone. Enclosed in a 56

The other half of the geometrically defined space – in which the parquet flooring tightly laid in stack bond continues uninterrupted – houses generous cabinetry, ideal for storage of appliances, and also incorporating the pantry. Inside of this closed layout, fully visible from the living area and bordered and defined within a tiled area featuring discontinuous geometric motifs, an open space frames the custom kitchen table, which is a direct extension of the shallow countertop over the lower cabinets, supported by a glass leg. In the corridor, a tight structure of wooden slats – completely in perspective with and mirroring the "millerighe" pattern of the slatwall unit – identifies and defines a stylistic component with a strong personality which leads to the bedrooms, whose flush access doors are perfectly integrated in the decorative scheme which represents the overall design key to the environment. The bedrooms zone in turn follows two clearly distinct formal scores.

The master bedroom features minimalist forms with sleek, essential lines. Two large custom wardrobes extend parallel along the entire surface of two opposing walls; in this context, the sand coloured high-gloss doors are sharply interrupted by two contrasting matt black openings, the first corresponding to the bedroom door, the second containing the large window offering a sea view; as an extension of the windowsill there is a further, highly functional design element here, which can be used as a desk for home working or as a vanity top.

INTERIORS & INTERIOR DESIGN

On the one hand, the master bedroom and its bathroom – facing each other at the end of the corridor and nestled inside the wooden slats – clearly maintain the stylistic and formal link to the living area; on the other, the girls' bedroom and en-suite, with access in the section of corridor where the wall is without panelling, make reference to the visual codices of the kitchen – located directly opposite the passageway – and reinterpret its compositional elements according to different stylistic rules.

"The master bedroom features minimalist forms with sleek, essential lines"

The "millerighe" slatwall panelling which is the core design feature of the whole residence is also repeated in the master bathroom. Here, rectangular wall and floor tiles – alternating in matt and gloss finishes in an overall effect composed of nuances ranging from blue to brown – create a geometric pattern of great visual impact; the space emerges in its unusual square form, with the presence of totally unencumbered walls, while the sanitaryware is installed in the middle of the room behind a halfheight partition. Leading directly on from the door, the vanity under the basin continues the "millerighe" slatted panelling, completed with a mirror hanging from the ceiling which makes the design of the entire room fluid and free. Located to the side in its own area, on the other hand, is the shower with bench: here a reeded glass partition, in keeping with the theme of vertical lines, partially screens off the generous compartment, making the connection between the different functional spaces more fluid. The girls' room, with access door opposite the kitchen, returns to its aesthetic and formal choices and colour scheme. A series of orange lines define and emphasise the custom built-in furniture created for this room, once again featuring modular and adjustable storage spaces. Finally, the second bathroom is an en-suite to this bedroom, in which green dominates, a clear tribute to the Mediterranean vegetation visible outside, further highlighted by the ironic presence of an animal light fixture attached to the mirror. NEW TREND: INTEREST IN DARK ACADEMIA SOARS

New research from independent wallpaper retailer Beautiful Walls reveals a new interiors trend on the horizon: Dark Academia. Typified by brooding dark walls, carefully curated accessories and a healthy dose of quirkiness, Dark Academia celebrates those individual elements that make a house a home, all against a backdrop of dark walls. Tim Dixon, Managing Director of Beautiful Walls, said: “The last few years has seen an increased shift towards maximalism, with homeowners creating spaces that reflect their personality. 60

Dark Academia builds on that maximalism and creates an almost-cocoon like shell around us. The dark colours envelop the rooms, creating cosy spaces that homeowners yearn to unwind in.” Beautiful Walls used new data from Pinterest which shows that searches for the term ‘Dark Academia Interiors’ has surged 80% in the last month, and 200% over the last year. Here Tim picks out his favourite papers from the Beautiful Walls collection, all of which will offer a beautifully brooding background for those homeowners trying to encapsulate the Dark Academia look. Simply add shelves packed with age-worn books and a candlestick or two to master the look. All wallpapers are available from beautifulwalls.co.uk

Explore the possibilities of what can be done with the press of a button So what can be achieved with a set of buttons, here are some examples:

One of the benefits of a home with automation is that the wall switch has progressed to the point where it is capable of being programmed to carry out a variety of functions. Wall switches that incorporate a number of functions (especially those with heating and lighting) and any sort of display tend to be called room controllers. Most makes of light switch can be expanded so additional buttons can control additional features. With a system such as KNX there is a huge choice of different switches from different manufacturers and most have a variety of frame and button styles and colours.

-

Lighting scenes setting a number of different circuits to different light levels all at once.

-

Adding additional lights to a button press - may be some external lights need to be switched them from inside the house.

-

Controlling functions other than just lighting, may be an automated blind or shutter could be added to a second button, in the case of assisted living buttons on one switch plate can include lighting, blinds, window openers and door openers.

The trend for the automated home is to keep the wall furniture very immediate and functional and to always label in some way a switch with multiple buttons. For functions that require greater time to set, the app is the ideal setting, setting timer schedules for heating: towel rails or lights and storing and saving lighting scenes.

RECLAIMED MATERIALS FOR BESPOKE DESIGNS Bespoke staircase company Bisca is driven by an ethos centred around environmental sustainability, placing strong focus on sourcing materials responsibly, upcycling and creating strong partnerships with suppliers who share the same values. A recent project combined all the above in a unique staircase, designed and made

from an old lock gate. Crafted into treads for a helical staircase, the timber added a beautiful patina to the design, striking the perfect balance between elegant and rustic. For several other projects, Bisca made use of old vodka barrels sourced from a distillery. The oak barrels are crafted into sleek-looking treads, giving the solid timber a new lease of life. Whether cantilevered or supported by stringers, an open tread design will suit a multitude of property styles and makes the most of natural light levels. With a bespoke design, the choice of materials is wide and varied, and homeowners can personalise a design by adding materials they source themselves. A staircase for a refurbished farmhouse included a feature stone tread at the base made from stone that originally formed part of the Baltic Chamber Arch. Incorporating it into the design alongside treads made from old harbour props, provided a connection to the local area.

LIFTS, STAIRS & BALUSTRADES

THE RISING TREND OF LIFTS IN HOMES •

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A LIFT Narrow your search and choose whether; it will take people or goods; how many floors of travel and space you have. Along with a few further considerations:

People are moving house less often. In the last two decades, people on average moved every 20 years, in the 90s it was every nine years. This change now means people are buying and building homes to live in for many years to come. People looking for their forever home want to ensure the house is future-proofed to cover every stage of life. The rise of future-proofing and the trend for building high specification luxury homes sees developers and owners alike, including the convenience of a lift.

LUXURIOUS DESIGN STATEMENT

Cost – put aside £15-£25k in your budget for the supply and install cost of a lift to move people or £6-7k for a dumbwaiter.

Professional input - if the lift is designed into your project from the start then you will limit major issues. For an existing home, get a lift survey, and for a new development, speak to the lift company to decide the perfect product. They can assist in making sure you’ve covered all of the technical requirements.

Location - it’s always a good idea to locate a lift for people next to the stairs and in a central location. That way it will be easily accessible from every part of the home.

Size - it might seem attractive to fit in a smaller lift, but go for the largest you can. Ideally create a space that is big enough for a wheelchair and another person. That way, you will also be able to use the lift to transport furniture and other larger items between floors.

Style - choosing the style of the lift, from glass shafts, custom walls, door options, to bespoke flooring – a lift can be a sleek and stylish addition as well as a life-long practical choice.

Installation - lift installations will likely require building work, varying on the type of lift. It is advisable to consult with a specialist early on in your project.

A lift is an ultimate statement, a lifestyle choice and practical feature. It not only boosts the price of a home but also makes it more attractive, creating a one-of-a-kind focal point.

HOME-OWNERS FUTURE-PROOFING FOR YEARS TO COME Lifts provide a fantastic practical purpose, for many, continuing to live in the same house as they age is important, as is the ease of moving groceries between floors. A lift can allow them to do just that. Plus, a lift costs less than moving house!

A RESURGENCE OF THE DUMBWAITER Not just people-moving lifts that play their role. As the trend grows for new townhouses with several floors, service lifts (or dumbwaiters) are regaining popularity due to their smallness and installation ease.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HOME LIFTS Properties come in all shapes and sizes - and so do lifts. In a new dwelling, a lift can be part of an Architect’s plans. In an existing home, there is a need to place the lift around the current house layout. The choices are endless and broadly fall into these categories:

78

Service lifts/Dumbwaiters - transporting food, groceries and goods between floors, ideal for properties with three or more floors, or where the kitchen, garage and/or dining area are on different levels.

Lifts - up to five people travel between floors with a choice of door options, finishes and configurations.

Through-floor lifts - up to two people travel between the ground and first floor, best suited to smaller spaces.

Even if you decide a lift isn’t an option for now, a home can be futureproofed by ensuring you design a space where it can be installed at a later date. Whatever your requirement, Stannah can supply all these product types. To enable an easy decision, we guide you through the complete process. With your perfect lift chosen, installation is a few days, then it is ready for use - with the reassurance of local service, nationwide. The possibilities of home lifts are endless, taking homeowners, family and guests, or goods, around a home. Contact Stannah - 01264 343692 www.stannahlifts.co.uk
