his project is set in the easternmost part of Santiago, in a rapidly developing pre-Andean district where growth has tended to rely on terraced housing schemes. In contrast with the community-based approach, this type of housing attempts to replicate the model of the semi-detached house but reproduces the same prototype however many times it takes to fill the site, so much so that communal areas are reduced to bare parking lots.

In response to this, the San Damian housing project offers the prospect of community ties through two main operations: on one hand, by moving parking underground, which helps improve public space above ground, and on the other hand, by creating a central space surrounded by six distinctive houses, which confers a sense of identity and variety to the estate.

The design strategy relies on two basic house models, the second floors of which are rotated alternately so as to obtain six unique houses, out of just two models. The second strategy consists in making a clear distinction between the ground floor, jigsaw-like and irregular, and the second floor, rectangular and linear. This vertical differentiation provides covered spaces on the ground floor, which can in turn be used as access ways and balconies.

As a leading specialist in the provision of advanced solutions for thermal energy structural insulation, Schöck demands extremely high product performance standards. The company always ensures that all solutions exceed the necessary building regulations and that any performance claims are verifiable. To guarantee the accuracy of its current performance values, Schöck has submitted three of its main connectivity solutions (concrete-concrete, concrete-steel, steel-steel) for independent evaluation by the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development (OISD), at Oxford Brookes University. The independent test results from OISD therefore all verify the product performance standards claimed by Schöck, with the various Isokorb solutions exceeding the necessary building regulations. New Refurbished Ironmonger Row Baths Include A Launderette Equipped By Armstrong

For further information, please visit: www.signbox.co.uk

As part of a major refurbishment by Islington Borough Council of the Ironmonger Row Baths, a launderette has been installed, equipped by Armstrong Commercial Laundry Systems. The baths, originally built in 1931, always included a laundry for public use and so, for historical reasons and to maintain this valuable service for local residents, it was decided to carry this on while also providing a facility to handle the substantial amount of laundry generated by the various facilities within the site. Sarah Matson, operations manager at Ironmonger Row Baths, told us, “We have been very pleased with the equipment and the service we have had from Armstrong and overall the unit is a very valuable part of our very popular and busy site”. Big picture approach to recycling pays off at new learning centre

FIRERAY Heater Keeps Optical Beam Smoke Detectors Clear of Condensation

Leafield Environmental has developed an internal recycling bin for Bath Spa University’s newly opened state-of-the art learning centre. The stylish SteriBin is a functional pedaloperated unit which blends seamlessly with the modern look and feel of the building. Leafield Business Development Manager Vince Wright said: “Bath Spa’s sustainability team contacted us in the early planning stages to ask for help to develop a bespoke recycling solution to complement the building design.” The SteriBin has integral pedals and wheels for easy transit to collection points and can be produced in a range of colours. The WRAP compliant vibrant lids can suit up to eight different waste streams and each bin can hold up to 65L capacity with an optional plastic liner. The handle was added to allow easy access to the bins for wheelchair users unable to operate the pedal. For more information Tel: 01225 816539 Or visit – www.leafieldrecycle.com

FIRERAY optical beam smoke detectors provide wide area smoke detection when it is impractical to use traditional point-type detectors. They are also ideal for large indoor spaces with high ceilings, such as warehouses, sports arenas, factories or shopping malls. There are two general types of detector: projected, which utilise two detector heads; and reflective, which have one detector head and a reflector (prism). With the onset of autumn, lower temperatures can cause condensation to form on detector lenses and reflective prisms. To combat this issue, Fire Fighting Enterprises (FFE) has developed a new range of anti-condensation heaters for its FIRERAY range of optical beam smoke detectors and reflective prisms. Heaters are available for use with the FIRERAY 3000, FIRERAY 5000 and FIRERAY 50R/100R smoke detector ranges. Tel: 01462 444 740 Web: www.ffeuk.com

ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO VICTORIA PARK

Victorian park in St Helens which first opened in 1886 has been restored back to its former glory thanks to a £4m project designed by architectural, building surveying and planning consultancy practice, Cassidy + Ashton.

A

The 14-month project to preserve and restore elements of the 14 hectare park and improve visitor facilities comprised refurbishment of the Grade II listed Gate Lodge, construction of a replica of the Edwardian Orangery that was demolished in the 1950s. The renovation of the park includes landscape works, the construction of a new bandstand, relaying Victorian kerb edgings, paving & footpaths and renovating the Mansion House Walled Garden and the restoration of the Folly. Work to refurbish the pond was also undertaken, as well as extensive landscaping

to plant new trees, aquatic plants and wildflowers. Two new tennis courts have been reintroduced to the park as part of the project. Working alongside St Helens Council, the Friends of Victoria Park, a specialist conservation team and landscape architect, NPS North West, Cassidy + Ashton incorporated the park’s historic character into its designs, utilising historic images of the Orangery to recreate the existing building. Combining traditional design with modern technology, the 250 sq m structure features heat and glare-resistant double glazing and passive ventilation controlled by the building management system supplemented by air conditioning. The Grade II-listed gate lodge has been fully restored retaining all the existing features and now used as a learning and community facility for park users and local

schools. The main contractor for building work was William Birch and Sons and the park stayed open during the length of the project. Cassidy + Ashton is known for its heritage work and Dave Moore, director at the firm, said: “This was a challenging but rewarding project that required the involvement of a number of parties due to its historic nature. “It was a privilege to work on a piece of history and we The Grade II-listed gate lodge has been fully restored retaining all the existing features and now used as a learning and community facility for park users and local schools.

hope that many visitors will be enjoying the restored facilities for many years to come.” Council Leader Marie Rimmer added: “Victoria Park has a special place in St Helens people’s memories, especially my own. Anyone who has grown up in the town, has a story to tell about what it means to them. That is what makes this work so exciting. Those experiences and those memories are helping to start the cycle again, to be enjoyed by future generations.” The project was made possible thanks to external funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, Ibstock Corey, Corey Environmental Trust for Britain, Mersey Forest, United Utilities and Bliss. www.cassidyashton.co.uk.

A GREENER APPROACH TO MANUFACTURING & OPERATIONS

With ever tighter building regulations and the government’s 2016 zero carbon house building target just around the corner, architects and specifiers are under increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions across a build. New product developments and the latest construction techniques mean that the building fabric is not the only element under close scrutiny. Entrance doors, windows and even garage doors need to be carefully selected to ensure the best U-values are achieved without compromising on style or ease of use. Garage and entrance door manufacturer Hörmann has paid close attention to all of these factors when designing its popular ranges. The company’s ThermoCarbon and ThermoSafe aluminium entrance door ranges are a prime example. Offering some of the lowest UD-values available, at just 0.8W/(m2.K) and 0.47W/(m2.K) respectively, these doors are ideal for use in low carbon building projects. But groundbreaking insulation levels aren’t the only advantage. 9-point locking as standard on the ThermoCarbon and 5-point locking on the ThermoSafe mean that they are extremely break-in resistant, while a selection of colours, finishes and glazing options also makes these doors the perfect choice for any house style, whether modern or traditional. Benefiting from rigid steel polyurethane-filled door leaves, Hörmann’s ThermoPro and ThermoPro Plus doors are two further ranges that offer excellent insulation values. Having passed stringent security assessments to be granted Police approved Secured by Design status, Hörmann’s ThermoPro range is also one of the most break-in resistant on the market. As with most Hörmann entrance doors, the selections above are all available with matching side elements to compliment design choices or create a stunning visual statement. For integral garages, where heat losses need to be considered, Hörmann’s insulated sectional doors are ideal. The door is made up of double-skinned 42mm-thick insulated panels, and has seals on all four sides. It is also available on request with the manufacturer’s specially designed ThermoFrame, which provides a thermal break between the door frame and the building, offering up to 15 per cent better insulation.

When specified with Hörmann’s ProMatic or Supramatic operator, Hörmann’s insulated or timber sectional door also comes with Police approved Secured by Design accreditation. Smooth operation and a wide range of design choices mean this door meets both practical and aesthetic considerations. Hörmann’s approach to product development is to offer the most energy-efficient solutions that meet the physical and design requirements of its customers - a resolve that is reflected in its own operations. Demonstrating a clear commitment to sustainable production, Hörmann has strived to reduce its carbon emissions, while maintaining and improving the quality of its products. Annual CO2 emissions across the company’s 16 factories have been reduced by 16,000 tonnes through a variety of measures, including the use of renewable generated energy, the installation of combined heat and power plants, and switching from oil to gas heating at many locations. Such measures allow the company to maintain its high manufacturing standards, while significantly reducing their environmental impact. As a commitment to energy efficiency, an ISO 50001 energy management system has been introduced throughout the Hörmann Group. This includes intelligent building services management to help lower power consumption across the individual plants. Raw materials for Hörmann’s products are, where possible, sourced from high-quality local suppliers in central Europe, reducing the impact of transporting goods to its manufacturing facilities in Germany. HOPPE Locksets End CE Marking Confusion

From the July 2013, it became mandatory to CE Mark all hardware for fire and escape doors – where that hardware falls within the scope of a harmonised standard. And while the CE Marking message seems to be permeating into the marketplace, the role of products which do not fall under a harmonised standard – lever handles for escape doors for instance - seems to be causing confusion. Leading handle and hardware manufacturer HOPPE is urging specifiers to ensure that they do not fall foul of the new Construction Products Regulations when it comes to selecting hardware for emergency exit doors. The ARRONE AR915 is an escape mortice sashlock, for emergency exit doors hung on either side requiring key operation externally, and single action escape action internally. The AR915 has been successfully performance tested, CE marked and CERTIFIRE approved in accordance with emergency exit hardware standards and mechanically operated locks and latches.

Doors Windows & Fittings THE SWA ANSWERS NINE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS SURROUNDING STEEL WINDOWS

1. Do steel windows rust?

Modern steel windows positively rustproofed by the hot dip galvanizing process and subsequently polyester powder coated, together with brass and stainless steel hardware, will provide as good if not better durability than is offered by competing materials. 2. Do they come in a colour finish?

Steel framed glazing systems are available in a vast range of colours. 3. What maintenance do steel windows need?

Providing frames and glass are washed at the prescribed intervals, steel framed glazing systems require little maintenance; please refer to SWA fact sheet 4. 4. Do they meet British Standards for thermal efficiency?

They meet Part L of the Building Regulations for thermal performance. 5. What are delivery times?

These can vary, but typically between 8-16 weeks, which should be confirmed by your preferred supplier. 6. Are steel windows ‘green’?

Yes, the Building Research Establishments (BRE) “Green Guide” gave an above average “B” rating for steel windows. 7. If I specify steel windows, who will install them?

Most member companies offer a complete service including installation. You can find a member in your area or to suit your requirements on the Members page of the SWA website. 8. Is it possible to replace heavily corroded sections of steel on windows, many of which were installed in the 1930’s?

It is possible to replace corroded profiles, preferably done in a workshop rather than on site, and best followed up with a rustproofing process before re-installation.

9. What sort of sealant / putty should be used for glazing in steel windows?

24 26

Never use linseed oil based compounds or mastics - used on timber which absorbs and is protected by the oil - for metal framed windows. There are special metal casement putties and mastics formulated for the purpose. Designed by BDP Architects and using Reynaers aluminium systems throughout the £24 million project combines lower, middle and upper schools within a single circular building around a naturally landscaped garden. Named after a local Nobel Prize winning scientist, Sir Edward Appleton, the academy building covers 12,000 m2 and can accommodate 1,400 pupils. Developed on behalf of Bradford College the academy incorporates two former schools offering education from nursery through to sixth form in a unique concept with the building stepping up in scale as pupils’ progress through key learning phases. An important part of the development included a new community library and primary school facilities funded by Bradford Council.

UNIQUE LANDMARK ACADEMY USES REYNAERS SYSTEMS THROUGHOUT Becoming something of a local landmark because of its prominent location, Appleton Academy in Wyke, West Yorkshire, with its circular design and sloping green roof is the first through-age academy in the region linking three phases of learning in a single building.

While separate entrances are maintained for lower, middle and upper schools, who maintain individual identities, all share in the combined facilities of the academy including the extensive community library, collaboration spaces and theatre. The refectory, cafe and staff hub form a portal in the outer circle of the academy with panoramic views across the Pennines. Growing from its single storey the academy progresses through its circular form to four levels with its light and bright interior aided by the use of Reynaers CW 50 curtain wall with insert vents throughout. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the upper development where a floor to ceiling curtain wall system, interspersed with the building’s classic and striking cedar rain screen finish, was fabricated and installed by leading building envelope specialist Prater. Reynaers aluminium window systems feature on every aspect of the academy adding to the high levels of internal natural light and in many locations also include opening vents. High performance door system ES 50 installed on the high usage entrance and external doors combine aesthetic design with energy efficiency and maintenance free operation. Prater also installed a render system and expansive flat roof areas, including an aluminium standing seam. “Our continued specification on ground breaking educational projects such as Appleton Academy demonstrates the level of understanding and knowledge we have acquired to help realise and deliver creative design”, said Paul Duffy, Reynaers Sales Director. “The academy is designed to provide the best possible environment for learning as well as serve the local community for a long time to come.” Appleton Academy was a full interdisciplinary project utilising Building Information Modelling and was highly commended at the SCALA Civic Building of the Year Awards 2013. Main contractor on the project was H & J Martin. For full details contact: Reynaers Limited, Tel: 0121 421 1999, Fax: 0121 421 9797 or email: reynaersltd@reynaers.com. Website: www.reynaers.co.uk

Thorough communication was established from the beginning we were granted complete trust to translate their needs into space. Breaking with the norm established by all the houses in the vicinity, GR House recedes a considerable distance from the setback line, to yield a large open space below the tree canopies, a stark welcome gesture. The main entry into the complex proceeds to an open passageway that runs along a rough-hewn stone wall and postpones the access into the house an additional number of meters. A glazed

It hovers above a large pond that can be crossed via a series of stone pavers that rise above the water and lead directly into the public areas of the house. The garage, concealed on the other side of the stone wall, compels cars to park sideways so as to render them invisible from any space in the house. The entry sequence into the building presents a series of layers, starting with the garden space beyond the setback lines, following through the open corridor past the pond, and crossing through the central courtyard all the way to the living spaces at the back of the main building.

ventilation into every space of the house without compromising privacy. The corridors around the courtyard on the ground floor are defined by a series of operable windows that allow the kitchen and living spaces to bleed out into the exterior, when the weather allows it. Expanding on the theme of permeability that dominates the ground floor, similar solutions were implemented throughout the living quarters on the second level, to allow for the private, open spaces. Such is the case with the small, glazed atrium that ventilates the master bathroom and the deeply recessed balconies that yield generous exterior areas to all bedrooms.

A central courtyard scheme was implemented to introduce natural

Below this volume a staggered pathway descends gently to negotiate the changes in topography on a pronounced cliff, leading down to a lower landscape area. Dark gray steel, glass, wood, concrete and stone compose the greater part of the material palette throughout the house, which is complemented by accents in leather and stainless steel. The master bathroom receives a special treatment as it is covered almost in its entirety with white marble.

Heat Mat has introduced a new heating mat designed to maximise the benefits of photovoltaic panels (PV) and micro-generated energy. This innovative electric underfloor heating system is ideal for well-insulated new-build properties and utilises ‘free’ electricity produced from PV. The dual-output mat has two circuits, allowing the system to be run at a low or high output, depending on the amount of PV-generated electricity available and the building’s energy efficiency. The dual-circuit enables an output of 75W/m2 or 150W/m2 to be achieved. Based on electricity generated from a 3kW PV system running at full efficiency the new Heat MatPV system, if run at 75W/m2, can heat up to a 45 sqm floor area* using the PV generated electricity. This is double the area achievable with the most commonly sold output of electric underfloor heating mats (150W/m2 systems). For further information and stockisys please visit: www.heatmat.co.uk

Storming performance from new Naco louvres Naco has launched a new range of storm louvres providing the highest level of weather protection for buildings and plant in a shallower profile to ease fitting in a wide range of applications. The DB50 range meets the most stringent test criteria for wind driven rain protection and provides ideal pressure drop performance all within a shallow 51mm extruded aluminium frame that eases fitting in narrow window units and other restricted wall spaces. The optimum blade pitch minimises the penetration of wind-driven rain, reducing damage and additional operating expenses. The use of extruded aluminium reduces maintenance costs and provides high resistance to corrosion. The Naco louvre sizing programme is available on the company’s website to ease the design and specification process. For further information visit – www.ruskinuk.co.uk

MVHR Delivers Outstanding Results For Hillside House

Flexenergy Unveils Low Carbon, High Temperature Solar Pipe System

Building a new home into the side of a hill gave the Weeden family in Sevenoaks, Kent, even more reasons to choose a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system from ADM Systems. That’s because Mr Weeden knew that it was the only practical way of ensuring that the rooms below ground level, which lacked windows, received adequate levels of ventilation. Without an MVHR system to regularly circulate and change the air in these areas it would have resulted in ongoing problems with stale, damp conditions. “The MVHR system is now an integral part of our heating and ventilation system,” said Mr Weeden. “I would highly recommend ADM Systems as they were extremely conscientious throughout the installation.” For more information Tel:: 01756 701051. Or visit the website at: www.admsystems.co.uk

Flexenergy has launched a range of flexible, corrugated steel pipe for solar thermal installations, combining the benefits of advanced insulation with high temperature performance. It is also non-toxic if burned. Central to the new high temperature system is a corrugated stainless steel pipe resistant to constant emperatures up to 150oC. It is suitable for above and below ground installation, with its UV-resistant, high impact, and flexible outer casing. For further information please visit our website: www.flexenergy.co.uk

THE SOUNDS OF GOOGLE

oogle’s new European headquarters in Ireland comprises four buildings in Dublin’s docklands and 47,000sqm of working area. It houses Google sales, marketing, and finance employees who come from 65 countries and speak over 45 languages. The tallest of the four buildings, 14 storeys high, is also the tallest commercial building in the city.

G

The headquarters is designed to be a stimulating and interactive campus. It has some of the most extraordinary interiors imaginable, formed with a plethora of shapes, spaces and colours and an interesting mix of different

materials, including Troldtekt acoustic ceilings. The interior was designed by the Swiss architecture firm of Camenzind Evolution, with Irish architect Henry J. Lyons. There are different themes for the floors, as well as for each office building, including spaces for 5 restaurants, 42 kitchen areas, game rooms, gyms and over 400 meeting rooms. The Google Dublin Campus is awaiting the prestigious LEED Gold and LEED Platinum certification. One example of a heavily themed room, used for games and leisure, has a Troldtekt ceiling chosen for its high performance in reducing noise. The panels

are made from 100% natural wood fibres. Their benefits include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability – contributing valuable points towards a LEED certification. Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, they can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour. Their sustainability was recently recognised with certification at Silver level within the Cradle to Cradle concept. ARE BASEMENT LEAKS YOUR FAULT? PROBABLY. Leaks in new basements are caused by poor workmanship and poor workmanship often starts in the design office. The more levels of defence against water ingress, the more each specialist team of installers can rely on another specialist team and cut corners themselves. Result? Leaks. Why? Because neither the client, the designer nor the main contractor ensure anyone does their work properly. A building control officer was recently overheard saying that, when he worked for a water authority, it took months to stop all the leaks in brand new reinforced concrete water tanks – because the workmanship was always terrible. Yet the UK's Concrete Society found that membranes had a limited life and that the simplest way to build a waterproof basement was with properly waterproof concrete and good workmanship. However they stress the need for supervision. The problem in the UK is that poor workmanship is more competitive than better workmanship and that is the fault of clients, designers and management. It is all very well saying that, as well as membranes, internal drainage will deal with leaks, the client has lost a lot of money and valuable real estate and hundreds of people employed to do a good job have run away, paid well for a bad job. What we do for our clients is prove to BS EN 12390-8-2009 that their concrete is fully waterproof and we offer training and supervision to the workforce. If this is rejected we make notes throughout each pour. At the tender stage the sub contractor needs to understand that fully waterproof concrete will be delivered and that what he does to or with the concrete to create leaks is down to him to repair. If he wants tapes in the joints he can pay for them. If he wants others to put on membranes he can pay for them. If the basement needs internal drainage later he must pay for it. Sub contractors who know they must repair all the leaks stop causing leaks and become more competitive saving many thousands of pounds and months of work later. Is this far-fetched? No. It happens with increasing regularity already in the UK. Is it costing more? No, it is costing far less. It

might add a week to a month-long contract but when these basements are finished they are finished. Unlike most that are not waterproof till months later. Why is this better than a BBA certificated water-resisting admixture? Because the suppliers of these admixtures insist that a C35A concrete mix is used and BS 8007 states that such concrete properly placed etc. will not visibly leak. They only guarantee the sound concrete which never needs repair. They repair, at extra cost, the leaks through dirt, voids and cracks. None prove they make concrete impermeable. In fact none improve C35A by very much. 15 years or so ago, the Japanese created a product that makes concrete completely waterproof. We stock it and supply it from the biggest producer in Beijing. It is an extremely powerful plasticiser that disappears when the concrete begins to set, the effect is very much denser concrete that has no capillary network. Nothing can get through. We get proof at every project that absolutely, completely waterproof concrete was delivered. So clearly if there were ever any leaks it would be the fault of workmanship, either of design or on site, and only the culprit would pay not the client. Sample certificates can be viewed here www.waterproofconcrete. co.uk/certificates.html This basement by a self builder is completely dry from the concrete alone. enquiries@waterproofconcrete.co.uk

Banbury Station Car Park Benefits From Berry Cladding

Design Buy Build

The exterior cladding on the new Banbury Station car park in Oxfordshire has been designed to help the building blend into its environment and was installed by car park specialists Berry Systems.

54

McNaughton Architects reduced the impact on the local environment by specifying Glass Sto Panels for the exterior cladding. This means that the residential properties opposite the car park are reflected on the walls of the steel framed, four storey structure. Berry Systems formed part of the design team for this, together with McNaughton and the main contractors, Osborne. Hill Cannon designed the superstructure which was erected by James Killelea. The panels consist of toughened glass bonded to a carrier board attached

to an stainless steel and aluminium rail carrier. They are manufactured off-site which aids quality control and reduces on-site installation time. As well as the Sto Panels, Berry systems also supplied and installed the capping panels, soffits, internal perforated metal infill panels, the link bridge security and access gate, rail side security mesh and, of course, the vehicle safety barriers for which Berry Systems are renowned, on all the ramps. These barriers consisted of RB1 spring steel buffers supporting a Berry Beam barrier, anti-climb mesh and integral pedestrian handrail. Provide Missing Link The new 151m long cable stay bridge in Ebbw Vale installed in March by CTS Bridges provides local people with safe access across the valley and connects the town with new leisure facilities and schools built on the site of a former steelworks. The area has been regenerated over the last 3-4 years with new leisure facilities and schools being built. However, the local residents previously had to make a bus journey to get to the other side of the valley. The new bridge enables people to access the schools and leisure facilities on a direct route. The 151m long total length of the bridge comprises four spans of 47m, 50m, 30m and 24m. These spans are supported with a 34m high cable tower and cables. The cables connecting the bridge to the cable tower were tensioned using a Macalloy Techno Tensioner. The installation of the bridge took place in March with some poor weather to contend with. But luckily the sun was out on the day the main cable tower was erected. Various sized cranes were used in the installation of the bridge including 500 tonne, 250 tonne, 150 tonne cranes and a 40m mechanical work platform. CTS’s installation teams were on site for 2 weeks erecting the bridge spans. CTS worked closely with main contractor Dawnus to deliver the bridge on a tight timescale in time for the opening in April 2014. Ensuring New-Build Gardens longevity One of the commonest complaints of new-build house buyers is the state of the little patch of ground destined to become the garden. By working a metre down in the soil using their wellproven air-power machinery, Terrain Aeration Services can undo long term damage of months in a few hours, leaving it free draining and a pleasure to own. It is fast, effective and even possible in the tightest spaces by using slim line plant. This can access the smallest rear gardens through a standard gate even after the fencing has been installed.

EQUITONE Helps Create Futuristic Hospital by Keppie Design

The fibre cement facade panels are fixed to an aluminium support framework using a structural adhesive which helped retain the visual purity of the fibre cement panels by creating a sheer, smooth facade.

“We specified a fibre cement facade for the new pathology building to create a uniform, matt finish appearance in a dark colour to contrast with the existing surrounding buildings and make a visual statement.”

E

QUITONE [natura] has helped create a striking futuristic facade on the £16 million BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated Pathology building at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton. The fibre cement material creates a tactile, smooth surface that allows the natural variegation of the fibre cement finish to be seen through the semi-translucent coating. This contemporary architectural aesthetic was

59.indd 1

also felt to complement the glass curtain walling used around the stairwell on the South elevation of the new pathology building. David Holt, Director at Keppie Design, said: “We specified a fibre cement facade for the new pathology building to create a uniform, matt finish appearance in a dark colour to contrast with the existing surrounding buildings and make a visual statement.” He added: “The material met with the team’s environmental

performance standards as well as creating a striking contemporary facade. The rainscreen facade was very easy to specify and we found the help provided by the Marley Eternit’s commercial team and availability of colour samples extremely useful.” The fibre cement facade panels are fixed to an aluminium support framework using a structural adhesive which helped retain the visual purity of the fibre cement panels by creating a sheer, smooth facade.

The facade design incorporates 100mm of rainscreen insulation and the walls achieve a U value of around 0.2 W/m2K. Lathams New Flooring Range Looking ‘Aged’ …. But In A Good Way! James Latham has bolstered its already extensive solid and engineered Bausen flooring portfolio with the addition of ‘1757’, a contemporary range of ‘aged’ Oak engineered boards with broken edges, a distressed top layer and no bevel. As architects and interior designers in both the commercial and residential sectors look for a real wood flooring option that delivers an instant sense of history and ‘aged charm’ to their projects, 1757 offers the perfect solution. Evocative of old reclaimed floors found in classical French Chateaux, the 1757 range is naturally distressed and every board is hand finished, so that each one is completely unique. Incorporating a generous 6mm wear layer, the 1757 collection comprises five different designs. Crest Girls Academy Is Top Of The Class With NVELOPE NVELOPE, the rainscreen cladding specialist, has provided an attractive finish with its NV1 and NV6 system, to Crest Girls’ Academy in Neasden, London. The cladding support systems have been installed throughout the £40 million refurbishment of the school, to support approximately 6000 square metres of timber and cedar cladding. “The NV1 and NV6 system is easy to install” says James Black, Surveyor from Horohoe Construction. “We used the NVELOPE project checklist on this project, which sped up the cladding specification process by providing a detailed design for us. It took about four weeks to fit the brackets.” NVELOPE’s NV1 vertical flexible point brackets and NV6 horizontal system were well suited for this project as they allow for expansion and contraction of the cladding when under strain from various weather conditions including strong winds. ccoya®LathamCLAD - the modified, highly durable and dimensionally stable certified timber cladding – is now available from all eight of James Latham’s timber depots.

Created from sustainably sourced wood and completely non-toxic, Accoya®LathamCLAD is a revolution in wood technology. And with the 15mm profile having recently received TRADA approval for use as an external cladding product, Accoya®LathamCLAD is a perfect solution for exterior cladding, siding and façades where the wider board offers numerous features and benefits including enhanced aesthetics, less frequent maintenance, dimensional stability, durability and improved insulation values. Suitable for horizontal or vertical installation, Accoya®LathamCLAD can be used to create simple or complex designs. And with a choice of factory coating finishes, it can be opaque coated or, for those wishing to enjoy the natural look of wood, translucent coated. Plus, with a 50-year guarantee when used externally, Accoya®LathamCLAD’s low maintenance requirements add to its ‘whole life’ cost effectiveness and environmental credentials and this versatility makes it ideal for use in residential, commercial and industrial applications. Paul Leach, James Latham’s Group Product Sales & Development Manager for Accoya said, “When it comes to cladding, Accoya®LathamCLAD ticks all the boxes and is the perfect solution for many exterior applications which were once only feasible with non-sustainable material. Use of the wider cladding boards is allowed by the improved dimensional stability, plus cladding joints do not open, tolerances remain tight and twist is prevented. In addition, the wood’s natural appearance is retained for longer, thanks to the superior resistance to the effects of UV exposure.” He added, “Accoya®LathamCLAD is a fantastic material for external specification and fits perfectly with our already established range of sustainable products.” In addition to cladding, sidings and facades, Accoya® wood is also ideal for windows, doors and decking. ACCOYA® and the Trimarque Device are registered trademarks owned by Titan Wood Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Accsys Technologies PLC, and may not be used or reproduced without written permission. TOP CLASS SPECIFICATION FROM ASSA ABLOY ASSA ABLOY, Security Solutions, a division of ASSA ABLOY has had a flurry of success recently within the education sector, specifying its access and opening solutions across a wide variety of projects.

lthough many believe that Chancellor George Osborne’s pledge to invest £21billion into news schools and the refurbishment of existing buildings by 2021 will fall short of the mark, especially considering the current backlog of repair work, there has been a noticeable rejuvenation within this market. The Security Solutions team at ASSA ABLOY has in particular benefitted from a commitment to repair and regenerate the current education building stock. Recent successful specifications have included University projects at Nottingham, Sheffield, Aberyswyth, Warwickshire, Oxford, Liverpool and Loughborough, where a range of solutions have been provided from

masterkey suites and door furniture to access control systems and door closers. Similar progress has been made within the secondary education sector, where projects wins have included a full ASSA suite of products at Upper Shirley High School and Millbrook Secondary School, ironmongery specifications at Deyes High School, Holyport College and Perth College, whilst Priestley College may soon be benefitting from the group’s SMARTair® access control system. More specialist applications on the horizon include the Richard Attenborough Embrace Arts Centre and the Stamford School Performing Arts Centre. The ability to utilise and pool together the strength of the ASSA ABLOY product

and brand portfolio, combined with the value-add offering from the experienced team, has enabled the division to provide a ‘one-stop shop’ for specifiers working on education projects. Allan Thomson from ASSA ABLOY, Security Solutions, said: “In addition to a strong brand portfolio and the development of market specific solutions, as a team we have been able to capitalise on the increased spending within education thanks to our consultancy services. “The increased importance of whole life costing despite the existing disparity between capex and totex spending, forms an important part of the specification process and our ability to advise on this has helped us work more closely with AIs

noCO boiler shut-off system offers enhanced protection against carbon monoxide

Coopers Fire Leading Manufacturers Of Fire And Smoke Curtains

The latest addition to Sprue Safety Products’ expanding range of home safety solutions will offer an added level of protection against potentially lethal carbon monoxide (CO). Each year, dozens of people die or are injured as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning,Worryingly, only around 20% of UK homes have CO alarms, leaving the vast majority unprotected. Coopers Fire are leading manufacturers of fire and smoke curtains and offer CPD Seminars on Smoke Barriers, Fire Curtain Barrier Assemblies and the latest British Standard for fire curtains; BS 8524 Parts 1 & 2, plus a combination of all three. Aliro offers web-based access control for small and medium-sized businesses Aliro, the new access control system from the Security Products from Siemens, offers a clearly structured system architecture with user-friendly software and intuitive mobile applications. With its flexible operating concept, the system can be managed from virtually any Internet-connected device.

Design Buy Build

Since each door has one access point, Aliro’s architecture is very straightforward. This makes it easier for installers to design the system and prepare cost estimates. The access points can also be used as capture stations, eliminating the need for additional hardware. With system costs proportionate to the number of doors to be protected, the architecture also improves cost transparency for users. This makes Aliro ideal for small to medium-sized businesses such as retail outlets, health centers and offices requiring a straightforward access control system that, as a distributed application, can manage up to 512 doors, 10,000 users and 100,000 access cards.

78

Access points can be connected to the system via the IP network as well as via traditional bus connections (RS485). Since the software used by Aliro is web-based, it needs to be installed on only one PC. Authorised users can monitor and administer Aliro from anywhere using a standard web browser. PEL Services Designs Sound Systems For Business Design Centre PEL Services Ltd. has completed the design, supply and commissioning of a Public Address (PA) and Voice Alarm (VA) system at London’s Business Design Centre. Located in Islington, the Business Design Centre is one of London’s most popular conference and exhibition venues. The existing PA system, originally supplied by PEL well over 20 years ago, had served well but was due for replacement. At the heart of the new PA/VA system installed by PEL is a Bosch Praesideo digital system. Unlike traditional PA systems, Praesideo uses a network configuration rather than having all system elements connected to a central controller; this architecture gives real freedom in system design. What's more, by connecting the network ends together, a 'redundant' loop is created so any break in the cable doesn't affect operation. For further information Tel: 0333 123 2100 or go to www.pel.co.uk and www.pelav.co.uk

Environmentally Friendly and Chemical Free.

Mechanical weed removal offers an environmentally friendly method of weed, moss and algae removal from footpaths, pavements and other hard surfaces. Kersten's special brushes not only remove the offending weeds and moss, but also remove the cause; organic detritus that harbours the moisture that allows the growth. Moisture that can lead to spalling on hard but poorly maintained surfaces. Chemical use is highly controversial and topical and any way of reducing it is welcome. Kersten's various brushes can be used with a variety of units, either self- propelled pedestrian or tractor mounted. They can be used on a variety of hard surfaces such as concrete, tarmac and block paving. Even deep set cobbled surfaces pose no problem for the Kersten system. Remember that to keep moss at bay repeated regular sweeping is essential. No chemicals required. For further details call: 0118 986 9253 or visit: www.kersten-machines.com
