Heyyyy, there!!! 😊 We’ve been thinking about you! The Human Resources Department has expanded and introduces the newly formed Employee Engagement, Reward & Recognition (EERR) Unit.

We are excited to begin this journey with you as we transition and elevate as a world class health care facility.

We understand that this cannot be done without the purposeful men and women who daily contribute to the fabric of the Millennium Heights Medical Complex (MHMC). One Fabric, One Team: We are Turning Point Rehabilitation Centre, National Mental Wellness Centre and Owen King EU Hospital. It is for this reason; we will be making a concerted effort to create a positive, collaborative, and supportive workplace environment for us all.

CHAIRMAN'S WELCOME A WARM WELCOME TO YOU ALL. TOGETHER WE WILL CHANGE THE LANDSCAPE OF OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM! Hello Team MHMC, On behalf of the Board of Directors of MHMC, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the family of health care workers of this institution. The vision is for transformation of the health care services offered in St. Lucia to a modern internationally accredited standard to enable St. Lucian residents to access almost all the health care needs locally with confidence and compassion.

This will significantly reduce the need for overseas treatment. We are embarking on a new concept in health care in St. Lucia, whereby we are merging the three (3) main national health care institutions, Owen King EU Hospital, National Mental Wellness Centre, and Turning Point Rehabilitation Centre under one management, that is the Millennium Heights Medical Complex Board.

I applaud you for the confidence you have placed in this venture and your commitment to improving the quality of health care in Saint Lucia. You are the pioneering team and history will endorse it.

Let’s DO this TOGETHER! Hello Team MHMC, I am pleased to welcome you to the new MHMC team and I couldn’t be more excited to have you onboard with us!

This issue of the Millennium Heights Medical Complex Employee Newsletter is the start of our commitment to ensure you are always informed. We would like to ensure that you stay “in the know” of all the things which are happening around our complex by featuring new initiatives, services, special key mentions and how we are working to improve our services!

Our teams – “you” have been doing so many good things that sometimes gets lost in between all other things. This initiative, which I must admit was the brainchild of our A & E team will be released quarterly and used to highlight the various teams and individuals across the complex who bring the spirit of MHMC alive!

MEET OUR MANAGEMENT TEAM

SIOBHAN JAMES-ALEXANDER I CEO Siobhan has a proven executive management track record and over 15 years of experience in driving process improvement, operational efficiency and managing transitions with both local and regional exposure Siobhan has earned a Bachelor of Engineering -BEng. in Electrical Engineering from the Ryerson University in Canada, a Master of Science MSc. Information Systems Management from University of Liverpool, a Diploma in Project Management from the University of Cambridge and a Master of Business Administration -MBA Finance (Summa Cum Laude) from Monroe College and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration -DBA with University of Liverpool. She is also a Chartered Director and has served on the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce. She is enthused to lead the MHMC improvement and transformation process. Apart from her professional and educational interest Siobhan is a student of the arts having been actively involved in dance, carnival and sports. She currently enjoys Crossfit, as a form of exercise and up until recently was an active member of the National Volunteer program.

DR. LISA CHARLES | DIRECTOR OF CLINICAL SERVICES This year makes it 21 years since Dr. Lisa Charles entered the medical profession in St Lucia and continues to make stellar contributions to the St Lucia Health Care Services and she is extremely proud and more ready to travel with the MHMC team into this new chapter in health care.

Dr. Charles returned to St Lucia as Head of the A&E Department of the Victoria Hospital in 1999. Alongside the dedicated nurses and doctors of A&E, she worked to transform the Emergency Department, instituting mass casualty and triage systems, providing training in emergency medicine and nursing, standardizing emergency management of patients, introducing bed side ultrasound, Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.

She also spent time as the Director of the St. Lucia National Emergency Medical Services coordinating the development of an EMT training program. Dr. Charles has a passion for teaching and is committed to finding sustainable ways of improving care in limited settings. She obtained her Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School in 1996 and completed Residency Training in Emergency Medicine at Harbor UCLA Medical Centre in 1999. She has worked in the U.S. the U.K and St Lucia. Dr. Charles was a national swimmer and competitive long distance runner. Today, she enjoys the art of bonsai and has several in her garden.

TARA GEORGE I DIRECTOR OF ADMINISTRATION Tara possesses over 18 years of Human Resource experience working within the hospitality industry as a Corporate Trainer, and subsequently at a senior level within the Import Distribution and Retail Industry as HR & Development Manager.

She has well rounded and demonstrated HR generalist skills including training and development, performance management, employee relations, policy development mediation, conflict resolution, employment legislation, HR administration and change management. She is the holder of a Master of Science - MSc. Human Resource Management and a certified Master Trainer.

Tara is passionate about strengthening employee/employer relations and creating an environment of psychological safety and inclusion at the workplace. She is extremely proud to be a member of the MHMC family and looks forward to working collaboratively with our team members as we strive towards achieving our goal of improved patient care. Tara is a proud mom of two teenage boys, she is fiercely passionate about family and is keen on overall physical and mental wellbeing. She enjoys social dancing including Kizomba as well as Latin Dances like Salsa, Bachata and Merengue.

CHARMAINE ANTHONY | SENIOR MANAGER - HR Charmaine presents over 15 years experience in Human Resources and is a holder of a Master of Business Administration in Human Resource Management, Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management. Her experience spans various industries including telecommunications, utilities, and hospitality.

She is a firm believer that a country’s human capital is its most vital asset, and it is that thinking which has led to her passion for volunteerism and participation in several people development initiatives speaking mainly on subjects relating to career planning and personal development. As Confucius said “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” – This sums up her passion for her role.

Her personal interests include a passion for culinary arts, a keen interest for physical fitness and interior décor. Her professional development goal for the next 3 years is to attain a LLM Employment Law as she envisions a long-term career aligned with making significant contributions in enhancing the legal framework for employment in St. Lucia and the wider region.

MEET OUR MANAGEMENT TEAM

SR. RUTH REGIS-ADEDANYA I SENIOR MANAGER - QUALITY Sr. Regis-Adesanya is a Registered Nurse and Midwife with 29 years in the healthcare field. She worked at Victoria Hospital throughout her career and transitioned to Owen King European Hospital (OKEUH). She studied at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom and gained a certificate in Operating Department Nursing, Certificate in Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice, Diploma in Acute and Critical Care and a Bachelor of Medical Science Degree (Hons) in Nursing.

She obtained an MSc in Public Policy and Management from the University of London. She progressed through the Nursing ranks at Victoria Hospital from Staff Nurse to Ward Sister to Departmental Sister, then Quality Manager and then Nursing Director. In her capacity as Nursing Director, she served as the lead Move Coordinator for the patient move from VH to OKEUH in March 2020. She is proud to be part of the senior management team at the MHMC since March 2021.

Sr. Regis-Adesanya is filled with immense gratitude for the opportunity to continue to serve the country and to be part of the amazing improvements that have begun in our health care services. Aside from her professional life, Sr, Regis-Adesanya absolutely loves gardening and cake decorating.

ROJER INGLIS | DIRECTOR OF FINANCE & BUDGETING Rojer is a Chartered Certified Accountant, with over 15 years of professional service and experience in a variety of industries in the Caribbean including auditing, management consultancy and financial planning – having development years in auditing, management terms in the water industry in Saint Lucia and Telecommunications in Barbados. His journey continued in the healthcare industry in the Turks and Caicos Islands and Aviation in Antigua.

Since being admitted into membership in the ACCA, he has also served in other capacities to advance the accountancy profession in the Caribbean and Central America, as well as serving on a few church and community organizations including membership in various youth movements within the Roman Catholic Chu rc h in S aint L u c ia and G renad a, President and Charter Treasurer of the Spice Isle Optimist Club of Grenada and Secretary of the Turks and Caicos Islands Institute of Professional Accountants. Rojer is ready to serve the Millennium Heights Medical Complex, working collaboratively with management and other stakeholders to improve the financial position of the MHMC. He enjoys soccer and is an avid supporter of Arsenal which he claims is the best soccer team.

Dr. Dawit Daniel Kabiye’s journey into medicine is an interesting one. Originally from Ethiopia, he was able to secure a scholarship to Cuba at the tender age of 12 to pursue secondary education. He took advantage of the opportunities offered to him in Cuba and went on to acquire his medical degree.

He has always had an interest in medicine and from an early age he recalls clipping articles on diseases as keepsakes from the local weekly newspapers.

In his second year of medical school, he was able to secure a non-graduate assistant post in General Surgery since this was his area of interest and so he got started in the field and never looked back.

Dr. Kabiye became a specialist in general surgery in December 2000 and started practicing in Guyana.

After three years of practice in Guyana he moved to Saint Lucia in 2003 as a consultant surgeon at Victoria Hospital where he joined the medical community and in 2006 started at Tapion Hospital. Today, Dr. Kabite provides medical care at the Respiratory Hospital (affectionately known as Victoria Hospital), Owen King EU Hospital and Tapion Hospital.

Dr. Kabiye’s specialty and surgical expertise covers the entire body excluding orthopedics.

These include head and neck surgery, thoracic surgery (non-cardiac), abdominal procedures covering the liver, spleen, stomach, gastrointestinal tract and other areas. Dr. Kabiye is highly trained and able to address a number of issues relating to those organs arising from either diseases or traumas.

Over the last eighteen (18) years Dr. Kabiye has done large volumes of open procedures in adult and paediatric age groups.

He is very mindful of the changes in new and open technology and has kept up to date with those changes as they relate to advanced laparoscopic procedures.

RECOMMENDATIONS & MUST-SEES Restaurant & Catering Services If you're looking for some good soul food in Castries, I would definitely recommend Mama Sheila's Family Restaurant on Brazil Street, opposite the RC Boy's School. The food is so flavorful and tasty it's like having a party in your mouth! I can assure you; you won't regret this tasteful experience.

TV SHOW If you're a Grey's Anatomy follower, you'd agree that season 17 hits home the hardest. Especially with the season being about our current events in the world, the pandemic we're being faced with. It’s very touching and honestly opens your eyes to how serious this pandemic really is.

IN THE KNOW WITH MHMC Breaking News: Our CT scan will be available and operationalized to serve our patients within the next few weeks! We’ve been on a quest to ensure that our Radiology department is equipped and we’re definitely making progress. We managed over the last few weeks to operationalize and improve our X-Ray services which increases our capabilities within the unit. We are excited to have our scanner up and running soon. We’re definitely making significant strides and we are proud!

Patient Services Unit: Our patients are at the center of everything we do, we’re committed to improving our services. Our new patient services unit will be focused on our customer service from the reception to the discharge processes. As we operationalize the unit, look out for our new and improved look!

Labour Room Provisions for Fathers: Fathers are now allowed into the Labour Room to witness and participate in the birth of their newborn and provide emotional support to their partner.

Transition: We’re still in the process of transitioning and we’re settling in. We’re happy to have everyone onboard and appreciate the patience through

this process. We have a few new teams such as the formalization of an in-house Supply Chain Management team, Patient services focused unit, renaming of Medical Records team to Health Information Department. As we transform, we are keen to hear from you and to hear your feedback so that we can improve. Look out for the launch of our Employee Opinion Survey where we want to hear from you!We encourage everyone to have their voice heard so we can as a team work together to improve.

Welcome onboard Team MHMC. Fall Prevention Campaign: MHMC has continued to raise awareness on several clinical areas with Fall Risk Management as major emphasis area underlying our patient responsibility which is everyone’s business. We salute the Quality Management Department and encourage all to attend organized training sessions.

TEAM ON PARADE Impact of the World Pediatric Project in St. Lucia The World Pediatric Project’s network consists of medical & non-medical volunteers, hospital systems, partners, donors, and staff all working together to fulfill its important mission. This mission is to build global networks to deliver access to advanced care for children and to strengthen the capacity of local health workers and healthcare systems (World Pediatric Project, 2021. World Project | Heal a Child, Change the World.)

The World Pediatric Project team visited St. Lucia and for the first time a surgical team provided Orthopedic surgery services and prostheses to children on the island at Millennium Heights Medical Complex- Owen King EU Hospital from June 21st- 25th, 2021.

This team was led by Dr Eric Gordon from the Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis, USA. The team consisted of surgeons, orthopedists, physiotherapists and nurses. Also, local surgeons, pediatricians and nurses benefited from the knowledge and skill sharing.

TEAM ON PARADE A total of seventeen children benefited from surgery ranging from three years of age to eighteen years and were accommodated on the Pediatric Unit at MHMC. Also, a total of seventy-four children were accommodated at the Out- patients’ Clinic for review and ranging from four months of age to twenty- one years of age.

Many of these children have had debilitating orthopedic conditions and have been very fortunate to benefit from this service.

Altogether, the management and staff of MHMC are thankful for this mission and do hope that a partnership can continue to benefit the children on our island.

Also, a total of seventy-four children were accommodated at the Out- patients’ Clinic for review and ranging from four months of age to twenty- one years of age.

Poetry or writing has allowed me to escape from the world into my own world; a place where most of us want to be at some point. I developed a love for words during my earlier years in high school.

I was never taught how to write but it has always been something that stood out once I had the right motivation. I strongly believe in self-expression but there can be many limitations to expressing verbally and so I resort to writing when needed.

When I do write, its free writing based on my current situation or emotion. I usually allow the words to speak for themselves; pun intended.

Here are a few ways that individuals working in the healthcare field can successfully cope with burnout in their day-to-day activities.

Stop and breathe Stop what you are doing, take a deep breath and compose yourself. Think about how you can handle the situation instead of going out of control.

Keep track of your stressors Write down the things that are causing you anxiety, then brainstorm at least one way to reduce each stressor. It might be as simple as asking another colleague to help you.

Say no to new commitments If you are already feeling overwhelmed, do not add anything else to your schedule that you may not be able to handle. Get whatever it is you are dealing with under control before you add something else to your plate and overextend yourself.

Engage in healthy activities Get enough sleep, eat healthy foods, and exercise. Don’t be too hard on yourself, you’re not perfect.

If you can’t walk or exercise for 30 minutes, then walk to a bathroom or shop. If you always opt for fast foods, try adding salads as a side instead of fries.

Unplug frequently and daily With smartphones at our fingertips, it’s easy to be available 24/7. But you should set some parameters, such as no mobile phones at mealtimes and no screen time 30 minutes before bedtime.

Do something every day that makes you happy If your days look like “wake up, commute, work, commute, sleep, repeat,” then you need to add a little bit of happiness to elevate your mood and add some positivity to your life. Reserve 20 to 30 minutes a day to do something that makes you happy.

Avoid stress by taking a long relaxing bath after work or start doing crossword puzzles. Just make sure that whatever it is, it’s not an “obligation” or something you do for any other reason than that it brings you joy.

Self-care is not optional. You can only care for patients if you’ve taken steps to take care of yourself.

THE HR DESK Introducing Team HR - MHMC A new day has dawn at Millennium Heights Medical Complex. For some time now the institution had been ‘in transition’. Transition had become a good and a bad phrase around here but alas, there really is light at the end of the tunnel. And that’s GREAT news for us all!

It is commonly said that the human resource of an organization is its most important, strategic asset. Leading global businesses in all sectors have realized tremendous growth and competitive advantage through promoting a human capital differentiation concept supported by significant investment in employee development and engagement.

With this backdrop, MHMC introduced an impressive structure inclusive of full-fledged Human Resources function responsible for both the strategic alignment of its people with its overarching goals and values whilst delivering total quality HR service delivery at the operational level. This article provides some insight into the work ongoing within the HR function as well as some of what you should expect.

Our HR department is subdivided into four sections with responsibility as follows:

Employee Engagement, Reward & Recognition Responsible for delivering on HR’s commitment to fostering a positive work culture and environment which promotes psychological safety, job satisfaction and overall productivity.

Focus areas of this unit include: o Internal Communications – Newsletters, Facebook Page, Staff Forums & Meetings o Employee Surveys o Reward & Recognition Program o Employee Wellness

Learning and Development - This unit is responsible for supporting the alignment of MHMC’s talent with its overarching goals.

- Reviewing existing competency and identifying gaps and providing the necessary interventions for reducing gaps.

Training Needs Analysis Training Planning Training Delivery Career Guidance Training Evaluation

In addition to the above, the team is equipped with a Human Resources Compliance Auditor whose role focuses on ensuring statutory / regulatory compliance for employment which includes ensuring maintenance of registrations, licensure and certifications which are mandatory requirements for many categories of employees.

Now that you have met our team, here’s what we have been doing: · The HR team has been heavily involved in the creation of structure and process for contracts administration to facilitate the smooth onboarding of team members. · MHMC Employee Orientation & Onboarding officially commenced on June 11th which every employee will be expected to undergo. · Policy Review and implementation · Manpower planning and recruitment

REMINDERS Staff Clinic

The staff clinic provides nonurgent care to all employees of the Millennium Heights Medical Complex. This includes, National Mental Wellness Centre, Turning Point Rehabilitation Centre and OKEU Hospital.

Patients will be seen by ER Consultants Located in the Outpatient Clinic at OKEU Hospital Open: Mondays 1pm - 3pm, Tuesdays 9am - 12pm, Thursdays 1pm - 3pm

Blood Bank Services

The blood bank is a vital service of MHMC that provides patients access to safe blood and blood products and maintaining an adequate supply is a key component of any effective healthcare system.

Located on the grounds of the OKEU Hospital

Open: Tuesdays 9am – 3:30pm and Thursdays 9am – 3:30pm
