BLOOD AND BLOOD PRODUCT


IMPORTANT INFORMATION 1. Consult your physician if you have any questions or queries regarding your current medication and transfusion. 2. Consent As part of the consenting procedure, patients receiving a transfusion should be informed of the indication for the transfusion as well as the potential risks, benefits and alternatives. • Blood transfusion consent form will be given to sign if you agree •

Refusal for transfusion form will be given to sign if you reject

3. Testing

All blood and blood products from donors are tested at the Ezra Long Laboratory for the following: • • •

HIV HTLV1 Hepatitis B Hepatitis C and Blood type

4. Blood sample Purple top sample, which is taken from the patient to process the blood product from donors, are tested at the Ezra Long Laboratory for the following: • HIV • HTLV1 • Hepatitis B • Hepatitis C and • Blood type


5. Identification •

You will be given an identification band with your name, date of birth, hospital registration number

Checks will be done by asking the patient their information, comparing with the identification band and the medical records

6. You will be monitored before, during and after the transfusion for the following: •

Blood pressure Temperature Pulse Respiration Oxygen saturation

7. Depending on the type of blood product that you are Receiving, the time frame will vary. • Packed red blood cells: 4 hours per unit • Fresh frozen plasma: 20-30 minutes per bag • Platelets: 30 minutes • Transfusions for children are based on their weight


8. Report adverse effects immediately

9. The requirements for donating blood are: •

Aged between 17 (with parental/guardian consent) to age 70 years

Weight of 110 pounds or more

Must not have done a new tattoo within the past

Must not be COVID-19 positive and must be symptom free for no less than 28 days

Acceptable blood pressure readings for donation are between 159/94 to 99/54mmHg


10. Blood donor and recipient compatibility chart.

This chart will help you determine which blood types you can donate to and receive from.

The Blood Bank has two donation sites. Feel free to contact telephone numbers: 1-758-4568230 (north) and

11.Helpful hints for donors: •

Have a balanced meal at least an hour before blood donation

Drink lots of fluids before and after blood donation

No alcohol for 8 hours after blood donation

Donation can take place 2 weeks after each vaccination shot

Men can donate every 3 months and women can donate every 4 months
