Tonight’s concert salutes the rich history of music written for film – both instrumental pieces written for film soundtracks and songs written for film. No concert of film music would be complete without works by John Williams, a composer with a body of work spanning six decades, including numerous recognizable scores including the Star Wars, Jaws, Superman, and Indiana Jones film series; as well as E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, War Horse, Home Alone, and the first three Harry Potter films. Williams has 47 Academy Award nominations and has won five times, including for Star Wars, E.T., and Schindler’s List, all featured on tonight’s program. “Adventures on Earth,” our selection from E.T., is a faithful transcription of the soundtrack of the last “reel” of that film, including the memorable bicycle chase through the forest and the breathtaking moment of the “flying” bicycle, followed by E.T.’s rescue and departure from Earth. We are delighted to showcase several soloists on tonight’s concert. First is our frequent collaborator John Bosick, accompanist for the Harmony Chorale and renowned tenor soloist, who will be doing triple duty for us tonight, acting as our announcer; singing “Moon River” (1961 Academy Award Best Song winner) and “In Dreams” with us; and then joining us on piano for “Adventures on Earth” and “Schindler’s List.” Our soloist for “Schindler’s List” will be Heather Tousignant, a local violinist known for her solo work, her orchestral playing, and most recently for her bluegrass collaborations with the band Broke Bridge. Of course, 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of The Titanic, and we honor her memory tonight with the love theme from the 1997 film about her only voyage. Our third soloist this evening will be the band’s own Travis Shiverdecker, who will set down his flute to sing the evocative Celine Dion hit (and 1997 Academy Award Best Song winner). This is an exciting time to be involved in the Mile High Freedom Band – we’re looking forward to our continued choral collaborations with the Harmony Chorale during Pride week (and with a larger festival chorus in 2014); to our second annual Spooktacular! Spooktacular! on Halloween weekend; and to the continuation of our marching season, with music drawn from the hit television show, Glee. Warm regards, Rice Majors Artistic Director, Mile High Freedom Band
