Tuvalu Towers

Fall 2023

Location: Tuvalu Islands

Mediums: Rhino, Illustrator, Lumion, Photoshop, Chipboard, Basswood, 3D Printer

Project Partners: Carly Browngardt & Olivia Filaferro

Working in collaboration, the Tuvalu Towers aims to revive the limited food supply on the Tuvalu Islands. With the island dissipating due to sea level rise, the Tuvalu Towers allows for the community to harvest, collect, market and consume crops that would be grown at these towers. The petal like design soil beds allows for the maximum growth of crops while the exterior and interior bamboo structure acts as a protector from strong winds. Our design also integrates a rainwater catchment system in which rainwater is caught at the top and then funneled into water collectors dispersed throughout the tower, the water is then used to irrigate the crops. These towers are designed to be assembled, and after a few years, dissassembled and repurposed to create more towers.

The platforms serve a dual purpose by functioning as circulation and as a space for crops to grow.

Boyer School of Music & Performing Arts Center

Spring 2024

Location: Broad St. & Norris St., Temple University Mediums: Rhino, Revit, Illustrator, Photoshop, Chipboard, Acyrlic, Basswood, Enscape

Project Partner: Michael Wasicko

The Boyer School of Music & Performing Arts Center is an institutional building for Temple University enjoyed by both students and the public to enjoy the creation and performance of music. In collaboration with Michael Wasicko, my partner and I designed this project to fit the needs of both the students and the public. Our first analysis of the site we realized that there were two major passageways that run North and South along the site, Broad Street and Liacouras Walk. The main goals for this project were to create an “end” to Liacouras Walk for students, a public entrance along Broad Street, and an intriguing facade along Norris Street.

Port of Long Beach Boardwalk

Fall 2024

Location: Port of Long Beach, California Mediums: Rhino, Illustrator, Revit, Midjourney AI

Working in the LA county commuinity previously populated with several oil fields, the new Port of Long Beach has been renovated to feature a car free community and research lab advocating for environmental justice and commuity engagement. The urban design plan features a variety of density housing, commercial spaces, and agricultural fields to grow crops to be sold at the central market. The proposed museum and research lab is located along the edge of the boardwalk where visitors can learn about the rich history of the port and also the different methods being used to reduce air and water pollution.

Philadelphia Light & Energy Library

Spring 2021

Location: Chestnut Street, Philadelphia

Mediums: Rhino, Illustrator, Lumion

In place of the abandoned Mercantile library, students were asked to construct a library for the built environment. The site is very narrow and is located on Chestnut street, Philadelphia. Program for the library included a lobby, gallery space, multiple reading spaces, an area for children, an archive/storage space, meeting space, administration office, and outdoor space. The sustainable strategy that I chose to focus my project on was light and how my building reacts to light using screens and louvers.

2D and 3D Pattern Investigation

Fall 2019

Mediums: Museum Board, Bassel Wood, Arches Paper, Vellum, Pencil

This pavilion design began with developing two key action words to guide the design; the two I choose were to expand and to chip. The floorplates and roof of the pavilion sees a gradual expansion from the ground up creating a cantilever on the second floor with a leaning façade on the second level. I then chipped away corners of the volume at the roof and at the second level with an atrium as well as a lower corner connected to the floor which was then covered with wood planks to allow for minimal lighting.

Wissahickon Valley State Park Tower

Spring 2022

Location: Wissahickon Valley State Park

Mediums: Rhino, Illustrator, Lumion

This project is located in the Wissahickon Valley State Park of Philadelphia. The site that I had chosen is located right off of the Rex Avenue Bridge on the riverfront. My idea for this project was to have this stacked tower structure to give a person views of the Wissahickon from every direction, focusing on key aspects of the park such as the river and the rock formations. With the tower being located in such an open space, it gives the sense of it being a landmark for the park itself. The program contained in this project are bathrooms and a gallery/viewing space. Horizontal louvers are wrapped around the structure of my building to prevent solar heat gain from the strong southern sun. The louvers get less dense as it wraps around to the northern side of my sturcture because it receives less sunlight.

Central Park Museum

Spring 2021

Location: Central Park, New York Mediums: Rhino, Illustrator, Lumion

The Central Park Museum is a proposal in which two structures are located on each side of East Drive and connected via bridge that crosses the street above. The program for the museum includes multiple gallery space, a sitdown cafe, and outdoor terraces. I wanted this project to feel like an experience that you would not typically feel in any ordinary museum. Having one of the gallery spaces be along the bridge portion of my design allows for the users to have that different experience of being conneced with the city while still being in the museum.

Southeast Asian Market

Spring 2023

Location: FDR Park, Philadelphia Mediums: Rhino, Illustrator, Lumion, Photoshop

This is the proposal for the new Southeast Asian Market located at FDR Park. The SEA market is sheltered under a large roof canopy that is structured within the building of my design. For this project, I was also tasked with the creation and design of a vendor stall. These vendor stalls are 10’x10’ spaces created using recycle box crates. It is the decision of the vendor how they choose to arange them. The box crates are structured within a hemp mesh and pvc pipe assembled cage where they can hang signage and advertise their products. During the off season of the market, the vendor stalls are dissassembled and using the same materials, bleacher seats are created for the FDR Park Ice Skating Rink.

Multi-Generational Rowhome

Fall 2021

Location: Elfreth’s Alley, Old City, Philadelphia Mediums: Rhino, Illustrator, Lumion

The Multi-Generational Rowhome is a design built for different generation of a family to live under one structure. The subject of this project was our own families. My design fits six people including my parents, my grandma, my two siblings, and myself. This rowhome uses materials such as glass, steel, brick, and corten steel. My design focuses on the central atrium of the building which allows for the ground floor courtyard and also the maximum amount of naural lightning.

Revisioning Temple’s Campus Fall 2022

Location: Broad St. & Norris St., Temple University Mediums: Rhino, Illustrator, Lumion

In this project, students were asked to design residence halls and other program for a block on Temple’s main campus. The site that I chose was the block on Broad Street and Norris Street. I chose this site because a lot of Temple students live off-campus West of Broad street where it does not neccessarily have that campus feel. This is a site that is relatively unactive on campus and and an expansion West of Broad Street would be beneficial in many ways. After conducting case study research of universities around America, I designed my project to incorporate multiple programs in one structure. In my design, I have a total of four different residence halls fitting over 1,000 beds. In two of the halls, I included dining facilities within the ground level with options for either grab-n-go eating or sit down as well. I have also designed for a new gym as Temple’s current gyms are small and are typically very crowded. The last piece of program I included was a parking garage. With Temple planning on demolishing some of the existing parking garages, adding another along 15th street would benefit to off-campus students and keep more cars off the roads.
