SGMOA President's Message

Teresa Franklin

“Many hands make light work” - John Heywood

Did you know the Sequoia Gardens Mobilehome Owners Association ( SGMOA), otherwise known as the HOA, is a bona fide nonprofit registered in the state of California and has a constitution and bylaws ? The SGMOA constitution’s stated purpose is as follows:

a) To support the affordability of Sequoia Gardens Mobilehome Park spaces for all residents.

b) To promote and ensure safe and pleasant living conditions and to protect our vested property interest.

c) To promote understanding and communication between management/ownership and the residents, to mediate disputes, and to ensure courteous, equitable and respectful treatment [by management/ownership]

My time on the SGMOA board has given me the opportunity to learn Mobilehome Residency Law (MRL) then advocate on behalf of our community when decisions from management/ownership affect our lifestyle quality and living conditions. I’ve joined with our board volunteers in hosting social and learning events. Together we’ve challenged actions that adversely impact the living conditions and common needs of our community. We’ve laughed, had serious discussions, agreed and disagreed, strategized, held monthly meetings and open forums to receive additional input. But, perhaps the most gratifying of all is getting to know my fellow board members while in service to our park’s residents. I’ve developed a bond of friendship through our shared work together. Collaboration makes the heart grow fonder.

The SGMOA is comprised of neighbors who volunteer to serve, get elected, commit to a two year term and agree to practice fidelity to our bylaws while in service to the community.

Another bonus to serving on the board is becoming acquainted with Sequoia Gardens neighbors. It never ceases to amaze me how interesting and talented our residents are. We have a treasure trove of knowledge and experience residing in our park. So many of you are ideal candidates to serve on the board! Please consider joining the board this fall when our elections will occur.

The time commitment is generally less than 10 hours a month. Accounting, administrative, secretarial, technology, leadership, coordination, communication, planning, confidentiality, advocating, organizing, listening and sharing ideas are helpful skill sets . However, a willingness to serve and contribute your time and labor are the only essential requirements. Watch the Quail Call for updates in September.

“ Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth” - Muhammad Ali
Warm Regards, Teresa Franklin- SGMOA President

Neighbor News By Jackie McCuan

Meet Our Neighbor, Sally Cates

Sally moved into Space 91 a year ago, relocating from Yuba City, Ca. She grew up in San Diego, blocks from San Diego Bay, where she played on the beach and sailed the family’s 12’ sailboat within the yacht harbor. She grew up with 2 sisters and a brother. Her father, a physicist, created a business wherein he developed underwater detection cabling systems used by the Navy. This business is now run by her brother.

Sally graduated from the University of California, Davis, majoring in agriculture and business. She put her skills into action during her marriages and parenting of her daughter Shari. Sally purchased a gift shop (ask her about her connection to Santa Rosa’s ReilyStreet Art Supply), and made and sold jewelry at the San Francisco Embarcadero. She went on to work in the area of creating outdoor access for the disabled, developing fund raising activities and work party programs. Her work culminated in the development of a 5-mile outdoor trail for the disabled along Highway 49.

Sally’s reason for moving to Sequoia Gardens was to be near her disabled daughter, Shari, who, before she recently passed away, lived within a few blocks. Sally accomplished her visits to see Shari using her battery-powered wheelchair, which she still uses for trips to the market.

While vertigo restricts some activities, Sally has managed to develop a beautiful garden on her property, utilizing pots and planting boxes. She welcomes her Sequoia Garden friends and neighbors to stop on the path and enjoy the colors and beauty of her flowers and produce.

Sally: Welcome to the neighborhood!

The Lighter Side

Careful

A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband.

Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen. "Careful," he said, "CAREFUL! Put in some more butter!

Oh my gosh! You're cooking too many at once. Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter.

Oh my gosh! They're going to STICK! Careful. I said CAREFUL!

You NEVER listen to me when you're cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt!"

The wife stared at him. "What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don't know how to fry a couple of eggs?"

The husband calmly replied, "I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I'm driving!"

GI Insurance

Airman Jones was assigned to the induction center to sell recruits GI insurance benefits.

Captain Smith noticed that Jones had a 100% record for insurance sales. It had never happened before.

The Captain then sat in the room and listened to Jones's sales pitch. Jones explained the basics of the insurance.

"If you have GI Insurance and get killed in battle, the government has to pay $200,000 to your beneficiaries. If you don't have GI insurance, and get killed in battle, the government only has to pay $6,000. Now, who do you think they send into battle first?"

Reader Response

From time to time we like to reach out to readers to gather feedback. This time we are looking to learn more about what advertisers or services you would like to see in your magazine.

You could let us know any of the following: A specific business (we would need their name and contact info), a type of business that you would like or a company you have used.

We do all of this to make sure we are providing you with access to companies that can help you in any number of ways. This is critical to the success of the magazine for both readers and advertisers. That is the partnership that has worked for over 40 years and still works today.

We would like to offer an incentive to any new advertiser you help us to get to advertise. For any new advertiser who wants to come on board we can offer a 10% discount on all 6 and 12 month ad contracts. The only condition is that they have never advertised before. We want new companies who can learn the benefits of advertising in your magazines.

We can be reached by email at readerresponse@mobilehomeparkmagazines.com or via phone (800)-828-8242 x3107.
