'Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.’ – Helen Keller
Autum is here with it’s colorful displays and transitions. Every season has it’s beauty and inspiration but for many the fall season is a favorite. As the days shorten, sweaters are donned and crisp, cool air brings relief after a hot, dry spell.
We’re optimistic and hopeful about our upcoming board nominations and election. SGMOA/HOA nominations are due 10/3/25. We’re confident folks will come forward and join the board. Election ballots will be distributed to your tubes by 10/15/25. Ballots can be dropped in the SGMOA black box near the printer in the clubhouse or returned on November 1, 2025 at 1PM when the official election occurs at our annual meeting. We look forward to your participation.
Thank yous: Gloria Gilbert and team for beautification around the pool by planting the concrete containers. A big shout out to all the Thursday food folk who faithfully provide weekly supplemental food. Ellie Genazzi, Quail Call editor, great layout and graphics. Park management and staff, your efforts shine all around the park and the vibe is GOOD!
We’re fortunate to live in a beautiful park inhabited by caring neighbors freely giving their time and talent for our benefit.

By Jackie McCuan Meet Our Neighbor and Resident Manager, Ken Self
Ken was born in Lower Lake in Lake County. He has no brothers or sisters. His mom still lives in the Lake County property owned by his great aunt and uncle. He often visits her there on this 4 acre site. Kenny’s dad, who died when Kenny was 13 years old, worked for a waste water management company in Lake County. Kenny credits his grandfather for teaching him valuable mechanical skills when he became his “father figure.”
Kenny attended Forestville schools and graduated from El Molino High School. He has found employment in several areas, including audio theatrical services, Home Depot, and small engine repair work. He has enjoyed self-employment as well. Ken has lived in several Sonoma Co. areas, including Forestville, Sebastopol, Rohnert Park and Santa Rosa.
Kenny came to Sequoia Gardens as his grandmother’s caregiver when she bought a home here in 2014 and resided with her until her passing in 2018. He was able to stay in the park as our maintenance support person until his promotion to resident manager this year. He currently lives in house 179 and will be relocated to the small clubhouse property once renovations have been finalized.
When not at work in Sequoia Gardens, Kenny enjoys camping- tent camping. He has a favorite campground: Schoolhouse Canyon Campground. He delights in taking off for unknown destinations and recently discovered Fort Ross on such a journey. He enjoys visits with family and friends, often going to Livermore and Sacramento.
While being park manager is a challenge, Kenny welcomes and looks forward to learning new aspects and requirements of his 9 o’clock to 4 o’clock, Monday-Friday job. He shared that he gets pleasure from helping residents “fix a problem”, and seeing frowns turn to smiles by problem solving. Kenny delights in seeing residents use and enjoy the clubhouse which he sees as an “extension of their personal living space”. His goal is for the clubhouse to be a space of warmth and comfort.
Kenny: Thank you for being part of the neighborhood!

Jolly Good Times
Shaji Thomas Varughese
At a High School Reunion, a group of successful alumni—now doctors, lawyers, business owners—decided to visit their favorite teacher. They chatted about their careers and
families, but soon the conversation shifted to life’s pressures, stress, and constant chasing after more.
After listening for a while, their teacher smiled and said, “Hold on a minute. I’ll go make us some coffee.”
He came back with a large pot and a tray full of cups—none of them matching. Some were fine porcelain, others were plain ceramic, a few were chipped glass mugs, and one even looked like it came from a diner.
As everyone reached for a cup, the professor watched in silence. Once they all had coffee in hand, he said:
“Notice what just happened. Most of you instinctively reached for the nicest cups— leaving behind the simpler ones. It’s normal to want the best for ourselves, but that’s often where the stress begins.”
He gestured toward the cups.
“The cup doesn’t make the coffee taste any better. What you really wanted was the coffee. But you still focused on the cup.”
Then he paused.
“Life is the coffee. Your job, your house, your income, your status—those are just cups. They help contain life, but they don’t define it. And the trouble is, the more we focus on the cup, the more we miss out on the coffee.”
He smiled.
“Remember, happy people don’t always have the best of everything. But they know how to make the best of what they have.”

When a woman wears leather clothing, a man's heart beats faster. His throat gets dry. He gets weak in the knees and begins to think irrationally.
Ever wonder why?
She smells like a new truck!
He was eating lunch at a truck stop when three bikers walked in. The first pushed his cigarette into the old man's pie, then took a seat at the counter.
The second spit in the old man's milk, then took a seat at the counter. The third turned his plate over and then took a seat at the counter.
The old man left without a word. One of the bikers said to the waitress, "Humph, not much of a man is he?"
The waitress replied: "Not much of a truck driver either. He just backed his truck over three motorcycles."
An elderly couple just bought cellphones and learned how to text. She was the romantic type and one afternoon sent him this message.
"If you are sleeping, send me your dreams.
If you are laughing, send me your smile.
If you are eating, send me a bite.
If you are drinking, send me a sip.
If you are crying, send me your tears. I love you."
The husband texted back to her: "I'm in the bathroom. Please advise."
