Brookwood Homeowners Group

On 10/13/2022, a quorum of Brookwood Homeowners Group (BHG) Board of Directors met in the clubhouse to discuss the proposed November 2022 BHG elections. Since no residents stepped forward to volunteer to run as candidates, the Board voted to suspend the BHG until it is needed again. Until then, all Brookwood Park Community Improvement Proposals should be communicated at our quarterly Brookwood Park GSMOL Chapter 1051 meetings.

Clubhouse Scheduling & Equipment

If you plan on using the clubhouse for a family gathering or other such event, please contact Dan Drummond with the Brookwood Social Club to be sure there is not an event already scheduled. You can check the online Brookwood Park clubhouse calendar at the following URL link. The weekly view allows you to see event titles. https://tinyurl.com/BrookwoodPark-Calendar

You can also check with Dan if you would like to borrow any tables or chairs to be sure you will not conflict with any already scheduled events.

Many Brookwood residents have mentioned that they would like to see the clubhouse open in the evening so they could come out to play pool, work the library puzzle, etc.

Whenever there is an evening event scheduled, the game room, library, and lobby area are usually available for your use.

To get on the Brookwood resident email distribution, send an email to danjdrummond@hotmail.com

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Greetings, Fellow Brookwoodians,

It is August and on August 7, we will be at the midpoint of summer. I hope you are taking advantage of the warm weather. I know some residents go the pool every afternoon to cool off. Believe it or not the first day of school this year will be on August 13th. So as usual, be careful when driving in and out of the park, as some youths don’t always look at their surroundings as they focus on their friends. Also be aware of students on their electric bikes and scooters. Some of the riders don’t obey the traffic laws.

Back on July 4th, we had a 4th of July celebration at the clubhouse. There were 70 people who made reservations for either hot dogs or hamburgers and I think most of them made it to the event. I saw quite a few residents of the park that I have not seen at other meal events. It was a good opportunity to meet our neighbors.

To help people talk to someone they had not met, my wife Patty, organized a game that had general questions about what people do or don’t do. You could go around the room and ask people these questions and get them to sign on that item if they had accomplished the task. For example, have you ever walked to Safeway or to Olivers and back? I think people enjoyed this game so I will ask some of the questions here and maybe you can talk to your neighbors (even if you don’t know them that well) and discover something new about them.

So here we go. Ask your neighbors or friends if they have done any of the following:

1. Have you ever ridden on the SMART train?

2. Do you know someone who has a relative living in Brookwood Park who does not live in the same household as them?

3. Do you know someone who has gone to a movie theater in the last month?

4. Do you know someone who has lived in Brookwood Park more than 20 years?

5. Do you know someone who lives in our park who has never swam in our pool?

6. Do you know someone who knows how to play the piano?

7. Do you know someone who doesn’t belong to the Brookwood Park Social Club?

8. Do you know someone who can identify 5 different bird species seen in Brookwood Park?

9. Do you know someone who drives a motorcycle?

10. Do you know someone who has never been to the Public Library across Montecito Blvd.?

11. Do you know someone who has been married to the same person more than 50 years?

12. Do you know someone who can play chess?

13. Do you know someone who can speak more than one language?

14. Do you know someone who has written a book?

15. Do you know someone who rides a bicycle 3 or more times a week?

16. Do you know someone who is a native Californian?

17. Do you know someone who has a vegetable garden in Brookwood Park?

18. Do you know someone who has played a game of billiards in the clubhouse?

19. Do you know someone who knows how to knit?

20. Do you know someone who has had a broken bone?

21. And finally, number 21. Do you know someone who wants to be on the Brookwood Park Social Club board?

If you could find someone to answer 1-5 questions, you should get out more and meet your neighbors.

If you could find someone to answer 6-10 questions, you are starting to get to know people.

10 – 15 questions filled in, you are out enjoying the neighborhood and its residents.

15 – 21 questions filled in you are officially a Social Butterfly.

SAYING GOODBYE TO MARY ELLEN FRIESEN

Condolences to everyone in the park who knew Mary Ellen Friesen. Mary Ellen passed away on June 20th. She will be greatly missed by her friends here.

When the announcement was made on our Brookwood Facebook page, there were several kind comments, which are included below. Additionally, several of you sent in comments to be included here so we could remember things about Mary Ellen. Those are also included below. Lastly, since Mary Ellen was one of our resident biographers over the past several years, it seemed appropriate to include a copy of the biography that Mary Ellen wrote about herself a few years ago. That is included on the next page.

RestinPeace,MaryEllen.

A grand lady and good friend. I loved sitting on your porch, feasting my eyes on your pretty garden and enjoying good conversation about books, gardening, our wonderful pets, and our amazing grandchildren. I miss you!! LindaSevier

On many days I would see Mary Ellen watering her beautiful garden. Even now walking by it, I can almost see her there as I used to. She was a very giving person, generous with her time for others, so helpful, opinionated, and a real good friend of mine, and a fun lady. I miss her so. KarenKelley

Mary Ellen was a talented woman who contributed a lot to Brookwood Park and the Social Club. I was always impressed with the biographies she would write for the newsletter. She would interview a person and create a very readable, interesting st0ry. Mary Ellen will be missed. PatNeil

A fun one. The first time Richard met her she said to him…”you would be much more good looking if you cleaned your glasses”. I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants! SheilaCargill

I met Mary Ellen along with a handful of amazing ladies in 2024 while attending Tai Chi class. Cathleen had mentioned to me she loved what I have been doing in my yard. She said it looked as if I've been busy. Mary Ellen invited me to her house to pick up a GSMOL packet. She served me tea and cookies and we visited for a short time. I told her how I loved yellow flowers...ALL yellow flowers but especially Sunflowers. I later received a text from Mary Ellen telling me she had an old yellow step stool just collecting dust in her patio. She said it is worn and it needs some cleaning. If I wanted it it's mine but I would have to go pick it up. I did. And it was a perfect fit in my patio with my yellow water pitcher and my yellow Tweety Bird birdhouse. I sent her a picture and her reply was " It looks like it belongs there". I smiled. Thank you, Mary Ellen for your kindness and welcoming me to our community. I continue to save crossword puzzles for you. REST IN PARADISE

Having been in BROOKWOOD MHP less than a year, I’m neither old nor new, but want to carry on the Biographical page begun by Bob O’Neil. It’s fun getting to know other park residents, where they’re from and where they went to school. I missed it when it no longer appeared ;so “THANK YOU, BOB” , for beginning this page and I’ll carry on with it each month and will begin with myself. Mind you, I don’t enjoy talking about myself; so this will be my most difficult “interview”.

I was born in Redlands, CA. and raised in the San Fernando Valley. I was a Graduate of San Fernando High School, Pasadena City College and Mount St. Mary’s College, where my major was Sociology and Psychology. I was one of the first to apply and be accepted into the Peace Corps in 1961, which shows my volunteer spirit and idealism was alive at an early age and continues to this day in one form or another. My work career centered in stock brokerage offices, along with a career in real estate and health offices in schools.

Bert and I married 48 yrs. ago in Reno, NV and moved to Las Vegas, NV in 1971 when it was a relatively small town. Gardening has always been my avocation, but the desert climate made it most challenging. After 25 yrs., we moved to another part of the desert Yucca Valley - to care for my aging parents. We remained there 20 years in a house surrounded by trees, so it didn’t feel or look like desert. While there, I had a small antique booth for 9 yrs. , along with running the church flea market and was the landscaper/gardener at the church.

During our years together, we raised 2 children, Jedediah who lives locally and Jennifer, currently in PA; so our activities centered around them. Over the years, we traveled to Hawaii, Canada, Switzerland, England, Turkey and Greece.

Then came the time for us to downsize. We looked at MHP’s near us and could not imagine ourselves living in one. It was apparent our kids would not be moving to Yucca Valley, so they encouraged us to move closer to one of them and Santa Rosa won over Pennsylvania. While visiting here, we drove through Brookwood MHP and I said “WOW! I could live in this MHP “. So after the pain of selling and moving, we arrived here last Sept. Since Bert had some physical problems for a few years, along with the pain of the move, it was most difficult for him. He was content that I was happy here, close to family and living in a friendly, beautiful, safe environment where all plants grow and bloom easily; so he came to the end of his earthly journey on May 9th. Both Sparky and I miss him. Many of you recognize my big, beautiful and friendly Golden Retriever, Sparky. I’ve been a diabetic for 36 years; so Sparky keeps me walking, which is an important part of blood sugar control and you’re most welcome to join us on a walk, diabetic or not, as we’re on the trail morning, noon and evening. And Sparky loves to get a pat on the head……………..

JOIN THE BROOKWOOD SOCIAL CLUB

JOIN THE BROOKWOOD SOCIAL CLUB

In June we started our annual Brookwood Social Club membership drive. If you haven’t yet joined OR RENEWED, it’s still not late.

Dues are $10 per person, per year. Your membership runs from June 1, 2025 through May 31, 2026.

Your membership not only gives you discounts for Social Club dinners and brunches, but also helps to pay for our newsletters, resident directories, television in the clubhouse, kitchen and clubhouse supplies, and any other related expenses that the Social Club incurs when offering events at the clubhouse that are not dinner/brunch related.

If you would like to be a Brookwood Social Club member, see the Membership Dues form on the next page.

You can turn it in with your check to the Drop Box in the clubhouse hallway, across from the kitchen.

Thank you for being a BSC member!

A few comments about BSC Memberships:

 A BSC Membership would make a great gift if you have a neighbor who maybe can’t afford one on their own. You may purchase a membership for another resident in the park.

 Our goal this past season was to reach 100 members, and we did that! This season, we’d like to reach 125. Let’s increase our membership!

 You can also make a donation to the BSC Social Club in honor of someone to help support our free or paid events.

For questions on these topics, feel free to reach out to Rhea Zaks at 707-3261566.

BROOKWOODSOCIALCLUBMEMBERSHIP

The purpose of the Brookwood Social Club is to provide a medium of entertainment and recreation for the members; promote and encourage good fellowship among the members; take an active interest in humanitarian, civic affairs, and the general wellbeing of all Brookwood Park residents.

Our annual membership drive is on. Dues will remain at $10 per person and are due on June 1st, the beginning of the fiscal year. Your current membership has a 30 day grace period and will remain in effect through June 30. You must be a social club member to vote, to be a Board member, and to receive the discounted price on brunches and dinners.

We are always looking for new ways to meet the needs of our members. We encourage your participation and look forward to hearing your ideas for new activities, and/or suggestions for improvement on our current activities. See the monthly newsletter for information on the current activities.

Please complete the membership form below. Forms are also available in the library. Don't forget to include the month and day of your birthday(s) and anniversary so that we may celebrate you in the newsletter.

Make checks payable to Brookwood Social Club, then place this form and your check in the social club box across from the kitchen.

Any questions, please contact Rhea Zaks at 707-326-1566 or via email at aviva18@yahoo.com.

If you’re new to Brookwood Park, please read this whole page. We are a fun-loving group of residents and want to make sure you have all the information to participate. We also respect your privacy, so if you’re one who prefers to live here without interaction, we will honor your wishes upon request.

HELP US TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOU MORE EASILY AND EFFICIENTLY

Our Monthly Newsletter and Annual Residents Directory are printed material paid for and produced by the Brookwood Social Club and distributed to all residents, regardless of whether you’re a Social Club member or not. These are good tools but not enough to cover anything really current because newsletters are written a month ahead of time, and the directory is currently printed once per year. For the most current updates on events, news, and directory updates, we urge you to join our Brookwood E-mail Distribution List so you can receive up-to-date information between Newsletter and Directory publications. Emails may also be sent in urgent situations, such as a park emergency, the shut-off of utilities, or an all-resident meeting to discuss significant Brookwood issues affecting everyone! Brookwood Park management does not use email with us, so we are on our own in this department.

To add your email to the distribution list send an email to danjdrummond@hotmail.com

NOTE: Our email distribution list is used with a Blind-CC so your email address is NOT available to see by anyone else. As of June 2025, the Brookwood E-mail distribution list covers 133 of the 166 currently occupied homes (80%)! Please help us increase our park-wide coverage.

FACEBOOK: We have a private Brookwood Social Club Facebook group page for residents of Brookwood Park only and it is intended for users to post about Brookwood-related events and news. Contact Gina Drummond if you want to join the group page: ginadrummond@outlook.com

Reader Response

From time to time we like to reach out to readers to gather feedback. This time we are looking to learn more about what advertisers or services you would like to see in your magazine.

You could let us know any of the following: A specific business (we would need their name and contact info), a type of business that you would like or a company you have used.

We do all of this to make sure we are providing you with access to companies that can help you in any number of ways. This is critical to the success of the magazine for both readers and advertisers. That is the partnership that has worked for over 40 years and still works today.

We would like to offer an incentive to any new advertiser you help us to get to advertise. For any new advertiser who wants to come on board we can offer a 10% discount on all 6 and 12 month ad contracts. The only condition is that they have never advertised before. We want new companies who can learn the benefits of advertising in your magazines.

We can be reached by email at readerresponse@mobilehomeparkmagazines.com or via phone (800)-828-8242 x3107.
