2025 ended with a cold spell and now 2026 is here! We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and we wish everyone a Happy New Year!

We had a great time at the Christmas Party! The food was good and many of the residents won raffle prizes. Some of those prizes were candy, ornaments, gift baskets, jams, throws, gift cards and the cash pot. Many residents won several prizes. We encourage you to make plans to attend next years party. Thank you to our Social Committee for all your hard work.

If you are going to have family, friends or a caregiver over and they want to take a walk you can pick up a lanyard with your house number on it. It will allow your guest to walk in the park without being questioned.

The street gutter weeds are being taken care of by Cameron. It is your responsibility to take care of the street gutter weeds next to your property and keep the gutter plant free.

Also, please remember to look at your yards. The warmer weather in October and November and the rain made the weeds come back with a vengeance. Several yards need attention. Thank you to all who keep their yards groomed.

Please also remind your guests and delivery people of our speed limits and stop signs.

A big shout out to Mitch Mandich 92 who cleaned up several yards in the last month.

The following statements are transcribed from the statements written by the candidates and turned in to the Board of Directors at the December 10, 2025 Board Meeting. These statements were presented verbally by the candidates at that meeting and are listed in the order that the candidates spoke at the meeting.

Statement from Joan Lane: Hello, everyone. Many of you know me, and for those that don’t, my name is Joan Lane.

I moved here in 2016 and have been very active during my time here. I was Newsletter Editor for 5 years, on the Board for 3 years, Social Club member, and eventually President of the Social Club for a number of years. I love our community, but times and people change, and some of it changes between the Board and individuals, so I decided to see if there is any way I can do something to try and get a better relationship going throughout the community. One of the things I’d like to see come back is the Open Forum meeting, held every third month, where members can come and speak openly about their issues, rather than trying to do this at a Board meeting. Those issues are then forwarded to the Board. This does help the Board to be better prepared to work with the community. I hope you vote for me, and I will certainly do all I can to be an asset to the Board and the community.

Statement from Nicki Bettencourt: I’m Nicki Bettencourt, space 89. I’ve been a resident of the Park for about one and a half years. My mom, Barbara Bettencourt, has lived at space 107 for over 20 years. A little about me: I taught school for about 25 years, mostly 7th and 8th grade. I retired from the Secretary of State’s corporate filings division where I supervised a team of 15. I chose Cedarwood because my mom has loved living here. With this being my mom’s and my home, I want to see Cedarwood continue to be one of the most desirable senior communities anywhere. If you choose to trust me and elect me to the Board, I will do my very best to contribute my time and efforts to make and keep our community a great place to live. Statement from Mike Crowder: My wife Cheryl and I moved here slightly less than 2 years ago. We lived in Ft. Bragg, CA, my wife’s hometown, for over 40 years. I taught high school math and coached at Ft. Bragg for 35 years. We lived in Klamath Falls for 6 years before moving here. We are 1 ½ miles from our oldest son and his family. I do not have any preconceived agenda, just after being involved in my teachers’ union as president and a negotiator, I thought I could help the residents of Cedarwood.

Writing a legacy letter: Send love forward

Leg cramps can be minimized

One unwelcome highlight of aging is leg cramps. Nearly 60 percent of older adults report the plague.

There are several causes.

Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances are a prime cause, according to Health.com. Try bananas, avocados, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, spinach, and tomato juice.

Medications like statins, diuretics (water pills), beta blockers, osteoporosis drugs can be a culprit. Check with your doctor.

Make sure your footwear is supportive and follow a stretching routine of gentle calf and hamstring stretches for 2-3 minutes before bed.

Sleep with loose blankets, making sure your feet are not pointed down under heavy blankets.

Strive for regular activity and gentle stretching throughout the day. Prolonged sitting is a very common cause of cramping.

Some medical conditions can cause cramping, including chronic kidney disease, thyroid disorders, Parkinson's, and liver disease. Treating the underlying disorder is essential.

Who knows what the world will be like 50 or 100 years from now. Will robots do everything for us? Will work be optional?

Whatever the future holds, human life will still have certain trials and triumphs. There will still be broken hearts. Still be bad decisions. There will still be good decisions and sudden successes. Struggles, humor, love.

After all your years of living, do you have an answer to that question?

New Year's is a great time to write a legacy letter to your children or grandchildren, spouse, mentors, close friends, future generations. Write it, keep it where it will be found, and add to it next year.

Katheen M. Rehl, writing for Sixty and Me, says the first step is to decide to whom you will write and address the letter specifically to that person. Tell them why you are writing to them.

Next, adopt a thankful tone and tell the recipient what you are grateful about him or her.

In the next paragraphs, tell what one big lesson you learned in life.

Tell what you think matters most in life. What do you value most?

Tell something about yourself.

You might consider what you wish you knew about people in your family tree. Answer those questions about yourself. Tell some stories about the ancestor you knew about. Tell the family stories.

In your closing, give your readers your love. Tell them what your hope for them. Offer encouragement.

You can write more than one legacy letter and write to more than one person.

You might even want to record a video.

The key is to search your heart and try to send your thoughts and wisdom to the next generation.
