Chumash Safety Committee Spotlight

Safety Committee Member

Sharon Porter, #89 (Alternate Caption Zone 5)

Meet Sharon Porter! She has been a Zone Captain since the Safety Team was first organized, around 12 years ago. She moved here in 2012, and right away volunteered to participate in that, and also the Community Planning Committee for Infrastructure. These are solid commitments that she wants to be a part of in her post-retirement years.

Sharon thinks that she was influenced by a backpacking trip she was on earlier in her life, in which a forest fire broke out in her area. She ended up camping at the ranger station for three days, and became quite impressed with the way that several agencies coordinated their efforts and took the time every night to explain what was happening. They also educated the campers on fire safety in their own homes. She thought, “They are so organized, why can’t we be like that?”

Sharon is particularly focused on being there to provide the right information and making sure everyone is notified of emergency situations. She remembers a time when a transformer blew out in front of the park, causing Chumash Village to go dark. Another time, the park was getting the roads paved, and people needed information about where and when to park their cars.

She also remembers the fire in September of 2020 on the grassy hills behind the park, when she evacuated to an air-conditioned bus in Marigold Plaza. She strongly feels that zone captains can free up Board members and emergency communication people so they can focus on the emergency and not have to go door-to-door.

Sharon would like to see every resident read the information that is provided and place emergency information on the refrigerator or other conspicuous places so it can be accessed when needed. She is conscientious and takes full ownership for providing information to the people in her zone and keeps track of those with extra needs. Yay Sharon!

Chumash Village Events Recap!

TGIF Socials are Back!

June Smith is helping us toast to a new month at the clubhouse, with the long awaited return of TGIFs! Currently these have been taking place on the last Friday of each month. The first one on Friday January 28th was a big hit! (See images above.) There was a great turnout, shared snacks and drinks, lots of conversation and good cheer! The one in February was on Friday February the 28th, and the last Friday of the month in March is also the 28th. We hope to see you there!

Social Club Meetings!

The last meeting was on Feb. 20th at the clubhouse. Get involved! Contact Susan Taber for more information (805) 329-1587.

Superbowl Sunday!

John and Muril hosted a Super Bowl Party on Sunday, Feb. 9th at the clubhouse. Julie Sievert had a table set up so that people could create their own permanent, individual, name tag. These were perfect for the Superbowl party, and they’ll be great for TGIFs and other events!!

Chumash Community Spotlight

Kathleen Windler, #87

Kip is one of our newest members. She moved here from El Cerrito, where she was renting, to the home near the clubhouse just 2 months ago. Already she has a new roof and a new porch, where we chatted with a view of her many fruit trees and flowering bushes.

Kip and her partner lived in Oregon and Illinois. She taught education and supervised student teachers in Special Education at Western Illinois University and at Eastern Oregon University until she retired. After her partner died in 2021, she moved to California where her three daughters live. She chose SLO to be near her two grandchildren, ages 11 and 8, with whom she has sleepovers and goes to their sporting events.

Kip wanted to buy a mobile home here, and chose Chumash Village because it’s nice and friendly. She likes living next to Ben and Brenda Franklin.

She likes to read “everything from John Grisham to Maeve Binchy”. She also enjoys walking her small black and white dog, Minnie, gardening, bird watching, and playing with her two cats.

Kip would like to see more social events, such as the recent TGIF. She envisions movie nights at the clubhouse, renting a shuttle bus for day trips, and wine tasting. Anyone else??

The Amazing Benefits of Eating Avocados

Avocados are packed with nutrients that make them one of the healthiest foods you can eat. Here’s why they deserve a place in your diet:

● Heart Health: Rich in “good fats” (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats) that lower bad cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease.

● Brain Boost: Avocado oil increases BDNF, a protein linked to better memory and reduced cognitive decline.

● Weight Management: High in healthy fats and fiber, they improve fullness, reduce abdominal fat, and

can aid in weight loss despite being calorie-dense.

● Nutrient Absorption: Helps your body absorb vitamins D, K, and E more effectively.

● Cholesterol Control: Daily avocado consumption can raise beneficial HDL cholesterol and lower harmful oxidized LDL cholesterol.

Easy Ways to Enjoy Avocados:

● Spread slices on sprouted grain toast with olive oil.

● Mash them into guacamole with lime and spices.

● Blend into a creamy smoothie for a nutrient boost.

A Rich History of Avocado Enjoyment

Avocados have been cherished for thousands of years by the people of Mexico and Central America. In recent decades, their popularity has skyrocketed in the U.S., with consumption tripling between 2000 and 2021.

With their rich flavor, creamy texture, and incredible health benefits, avocados are a simple, delicious way to support your well-being.

QUOTES

Chalmers

It's been my observation that most people get ahead during the time that others waste.

Henry Ford

Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires courage.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Coco Chanel

Our personal consumer choices have ecological, social and spiritual consequences. It is time to re-examine some of the deeply held notions that underlie our lifestyles.

The Lighter Side

Loft

I played a round of golf with the local course pro to get some helpful tips.

After the first hole I turned to him for some advice and he said "loft".

After the next four holes I asked him again and all he said was "loft"

After we finished the round and I asked him why after each hole all he would ever tell me was "loft " ?

To which the pro relied "loft": "Lack Of Freaking Talent "

Gambling

When I go to casinos, the most ridiculous sign I see is the one that says..."If you have a gambling problem, call 1-800GAMBLER."

So, I called them and said, "I have an ace and a six. The dealer has a seven. What should I do?"

They hung up.

Gotcha

When my three-year-old son opened the birthday gift from his grandmother, he discovered a water pistol. He squealed with delight.

I was not so pleased. I turned to Mom and said, "I'm surprised at you. Don't you remember how we used to drive you crazy with water guns?"

Her mom smiled and said, "Oh, yes, I remember !"
