Getting Older
Gary, who is a fellow resident of Terrace Estate’s recently celebrated his 90th birthday. I’m sure that most people would think of that as a major accomplishment. Or at least something very special.
I was curious as to what he thought about it so I asked him one day when we were playing a game of pool during our weekly Monday get-togethers. He told me that he has lowered his original goal of eventually turning 100, to now simply hoping to reach the age of 95.
His honest answer made me think about my own expectations and how different they are from his. And to also wonder about the opinions of others, as they make their way through today’s sometimes troubled world.
Nowadays, whenever someone asks me how old I am I think back to an experience I had about 10 years ago. It happened during a summer afternoon when I was playing golf with a man I had never met before. We had been playing for about two hours and he was beating me effortlessly. Despite the fact that he looked to be around 80 years old, he was full of energy and the warm weather did not seem to bother him at all.
A combination of curiosity and frustration got the best of me, and I just had to ask the question…. “ How old are you?” I immediately thought that I might have offended him because he looked at me strangely and paused before answering. His short response was one I will never forget .He said with no expression on his face … “ I am one day older than I was yesterday.”
I ask you… Is getting older a good thing? Or is it something bad?
We can all look back on our lives and see the happy times, as well as the ones that were sad. But you have a choice. You can look back at what you can’t do and get mad. Or you can figure out what you can do and be thankful and glad.
At what age is considered old anyway? Is it 60, 80, or 100, who can say?
We should all just be grateful for the chance to live and enjoy another day. And not worry about what you can’t control and realize that everything else will turn out OK. What you choose to do and how you live your life only you can decide
But I truly hope that your journey will lead you on a long, happy life.

Recently, it was brought to my attention by a fellow resident that some of what I had been writing was depressing. I always appreciate hearing the opinions about what I have written from my neighbors. Both positive or negative. And I have to agree to an extent about the observation. I have been dealing with depression for more than 10 years and writing from my heart has been a tool to help me through some dark times. But just like today’ s world events, everything doesn’t always turn out like a rainbow or flowers in bloom.
I truly hope that what I write might occasionally turn some frowns into smiles, and maybe a laugh or two.
I thought this might be a good time to share my favorite joke. I have told this hundreds of times and all across United States on my travels. “ What is the difference between beer nuts and deer nuts?”
Beer nuts cost three dollars. But deer nuts are always under a buck. Happy Trails Don

Pool Game At The Zoo
Looking down my pink stick
My eye is on the six ball
Concentrating deeply
That’s when I hear Richard’s hoot call
“You got this babe”, he says It always makes my brother laugh
Don now smiles, pen to paper Finishing his stories last paragraph
Cisco and Gary Stand toe to toe
One teasing the other
On whose ball has gotta go!
Kurt pops his head in
As he surveys all around Bids hello to everyone Then sets off to higher ground
Out of the bathroom
Tony dries his hands
Then pulls his hair back
Secured by rubber bands
Vance then walks in Stick case in hand
“When did you get back?”
I say more like a reprimand
We’re all here to shoot pool
Maybe have a beer or two I feel like we’re all family
One that was brought up in the zoo
These guys are the best And some are no longer here Thinking of you Ted
As I raise up my beer!
