“Merely a five minute walk?”
Normally, it’s a routine five minute walk down the hill from my home to the swimming pool. One that I have made hundreds of times. But today there was something special about it. It all started at the beginning of my walk when a giant shadow slowly made its way across the path directly in front of me. The sun was directly overhead when the crow flew between it and me creating an enormous shadow that immediately caught my attention. It didn’t seem to struggle at all as it carried a huge stick in its mouth. I watched until it disappeared in a tall palm tree, wondering how far along the nest was from being completed.
After losing sight of the crow, I immediately noticed a colorful butterfly nearby dancing from bush to bush. And then, only a dozen steps later, an American flag caught my attention. It was proudly, slowly waving in the welcome breeze that was tempering the slightly humid 80 degree weather. The historic thoughts that were brought on by how seeing the Red, White, and Blue in a different way were quietly interrupted as I now noticed a passenger plane in the distance as it made its way to a landing at San Diego Airport. I started wondering where the passengers were heading and what their stories might have to say about them.
I was about a minute away from the swimming pool when I finally became aware of the ever-present traffic noises. This is a situation that on a lot of days would bother me. But not today. Today it’s just another part of the wonderful day that I am having! I am positive that I will experience something special in my hike back up the hill towards my home.
Happy Trails, Don Petty
I am really sad to say, due to some medical issues, I must step down as editor of our newsletter. The last eight years have really been fun as well as a challenge. Check next month’s magazine for details about our new Editor, Terri.
I want to thank our regular contributors. Don Petty has been sharing his poetry and stories the entire eight years. Every month I look forward to his contributions and being able to share them with you! Denise Allen has been submitting her poetry the last several months. I love it. Let us not forget Mary Ann Hayes, another neighbor, who has been submitting articles and helpful hints over the years. Then there is Craig who shared his favorite Recipe Book. I do wonder if anyone tried one of the recipes?
To all you friends and neighbors out there who helped me with suggestions, requests, and submissions, you have my sincere thanks. I could not have done it without you!

It’s been my pleasure
Barbara
Out here, I am free To awake and do nothing Or walk the earth with glee
It is my day to which I lay my plan It’s mine to make, I will take a stand
The changing clock makes the difference to me The minutes are mine I am free
Free to walk, free to crawl I will dress in satin Or maybe nothing at all
At my age I know for sure What I’ve seen Maybe disease or maybe a cure!
Take a sip, drink me all down I can be all smiles, or be all frowns
Each of us choose our own sunrise To awake happy, or to just close your eyes
I wake up smiling, thinking of my life I have been all, sister, daughter, mother, and wife
The real me is still here and breathing You may or may not even see me
But I have left my mark in the children I have bore The friends that I have encountered prove loves truth is core
Enjoy your life and remember your past It soon will all end, it happens so fast
And what you are is what you leave Let it be remembered with hearts of glee

Less ego, more wealth. Saving money is the gap between your ego and your income, and wealth is what you don't see. So wealth is created by suppressing what you could buy today in order to have more stuff or more options in the future.

More people can be greater leaders than they think they can, but they need a purpose greater than themselves.
William J. Clinton, 42nd president of the United States.
Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.
Frequently attributed to Abraham Lincoln, 16th president of the United State
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan, "Press on," has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.
Calvin Coolidge, 30th president of the United States, from a sign on his desk.
Any man worth his salt will stick up for what he believes right, but it takes a slightly better man to acknowledge instantly and without reservation that he is in error.
Andrew Jackson, 7th president of the United States
Live without pretending, Love without depending, Listen without defending, Speak without offending.

If Trivial Pursuit had been designed by economists, it would have had 100 questions and 3,000 answers.

The young woman really thought she'd been very patient through a protracted period of dating with no talk of marriage.
One night her steady boyfriend took her to a Chinese restaurant. As he perused the menu, he casually asked her, "So . . . how do you like your rice? Boiled? Steamed? Or fried?"
Without missing a beat, she looked over her menu at him and replied clearly, "Thrown."
While proudly showing off his new apartment to friends late one night, one wag led the way to his bedroom where there was a big brass gong.
"What's that big brass gong for?" one of the guests asked.
"Why, that's the talking clock," the man replied. "Watch", the man said, giving the gong an ear-shattering pound with a hammer.
Suddenly, someone on the other side of the wall screamed, "F'gosh sakes, you idiot, it's 2 a.m. in the morning!"
The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray:
"Take only ONE. God is watching."
Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies.
A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples."
