Millennium Memo Grandview Chatter

A couple months ago, I observed that no one from Grandview had applied for a SPARC/Millennium scholarship in 4 years. That streak is now over! Please join me in congratulating Grandview student Sherlyn Morga, your 2025 Scholarship winner.

Including Sherlyn, Grandview has only had 3 SPARC Scholars in the program’s 18-year history, so could this be the start of a winning streak? Maybe Sherlyn will repeat next year.

Thanks to the folks at SPARC, our resident services partner, for this generous program.

Speaking of SPARC…

Devin’s Back!

Did You Know?

Secretary of State, William Seward negotiated the U.S. purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million (less than 2cents per acre) in a deal nicknamed Seward’s Folly. The formal transfer took place on October 18, 1867.

Devin Fernandez, Grandview’s SPARC Rep, was set to return from her Maternity Leave on Sept. 15. No one is happier about that than Ally Sage & Stacee Kazmierski, who have been covering Grandview during Devin’s leave.

Now that Devin is back, let’s see what programs she finds. If you have any ideas for her, send her an email at dfernandez@sparc-ca.org.

In some cases, it’s a guest that’s the speed demon. Please make sure your guests, family members and anyone else you invite knows the 10 MPH rule.

A few years ago, I told you about my late father, and how slowly he would drive so slowly, in fact, that when we were on the freeway, even Amish people would honk. OK, you can go a bit faster than he did, but please Drive Safely!

Congratulations again to Sherlyn…and have a fun Halloween! George Turk

Manager’s Corner

Dear Grandview East,

As we welcome the fall season, we’d like to share a few updates and reminders for the month ahead.

Halloween Safety Tips

With Halloween right around the corner, here are two quick tips to help keep the night fun and safe:

• Double-check treats – Remind kids not to eat candy until it’s been inspected by an adult.

• Use reflective gear – Add glow sticks, reflective tape, or flashlights to costumes so kids are easier to see in the dark

Community Yard Sale – November 8th & 9th

We are excited to announce a park-wide yard sale on Saturday, November 8th, and Sunday, November 9th. This will be a great opportunity to declutter, find treasures, and enjoy time with neighbors.

• To sign up for the yard sale please Obtain a permit through Yucaipa City Hall before Thursday November 6th. (City Hall is closed on Fridays) Permits Cost $2

Yucaipa City Hall address and phone number: 34272 Yucaipa Blvd, Yucaipa, CA 92399 / (909)797-2489

Large Item Trash Pickup – November 12th

After the yard sale, Burrtec will help us remove any large items on Wednesday, November 12th

• To participate, please call Burrtec between October 27th and November 7th to schedule your pickup. Burrtec Waste# – (909)797-9125

This ensures your items are on the list for collection after the yard sale.

Let’s work together to keep Grandview East clean and welcoming!

Remember: one person’s “junk” is another person’s “garage sale treasure”… unless it’s a broken treadmill—then it’s just a really expensive clothes hanger.

Help the trick or treaters find the candy stash.

The Lighter Side

Leather

When a woman wears leather clothing, a man's heart beats faster. His throat gets dry. He gets weak in the knees and begins to think irrationally.

Ever wonder why?

She smells like a new truck!

Old man

He was eating lunch at a truck stop when three bikers walked in. The first pushed his cigarette into the old man's pie, then took a seat at the counter.

The second spit in the old man's milk, then took a seat at the counter. The third turned his plate over and then took a seat at the counter.

The old man left without a word. One of the bikers said to the waitress, "Humph, not much of a man is he?"

The waitress replied: "Not much of a truck driver either. He just backed his truck over three motorcycles."

What to do

An elderly couple just bought cellphones and learned how to text. She was the romantic type and one afternoon sent him this message.

"If you are sleeping, send me your dreams.

If you are laughing, send me your smile.

If you are eating, send me a bite.

If you are drinking, send me a sip.

If you are crying, send me your tears. I love you."

The husband texted back to her: "I'm in the bathroom. Please advise."
