LET’S BE SOCIAL!

October is a month to be careful….Children running around and cars everywhere. I can’t believe how fast people drive in this park…I guess that they don’t care….I see children’s toys left in the street in front of kids homes that have been sitting there every day for two weeks…..If I’m correct children are not allowed to play in the streets, but I see basketball hoops up and kids bouncing balls playing in the streets. I guess it’s going to take someone getting hurt till parents follow the rules and to think that the drivers won’t be responsible because we all signed the lease that states children are not allowed to play in streets. The park just refinished the floors on the main dining room, they look great, but the very first night parents allowed their children to drive a trike and a scooter all over the brand new floor….I could not believe it. Did you know that dogs ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE WALKED IN THE PARK! Having a dog is a privilege and has to be registered with the office. I’m a dog lover myself but I haven’t found anything or seen anyone pick up pee, and we all know pee kills everything. I hope that everyone has gotten ready for winter, they say were in for a wet one, there’s nothing worse than leaks of water in our homes. Remember to check on your neighbors and make sure they are ok! Cheers 3

Halloween Horticulture What would Halloween be without pumpkins for jack-o-lanterns and decorations? Although this is the plant most often associated with Halloween today, it may surprise you that in the past other fruits and vegetables had strong connections to this history. In England and Ireland, Halloween lanterns were originally carved out of turnips and large beets. Faces of demons were cut into vegetables then a glowing coal was placed inside. People carried these lanterns around the village or left them burning on doorsteps to frighten away evil spirts. When the Irish immigrants arrived in America, they found pumpkins abundant and much easier to carve than turnips. And thus, the tradition of turning pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns began. The customer of decorating with apples, pumpkins, cornstalks and autumn leaves has its origin in an ancient Druid autumn festival called Samhain. The festival celebrated the end of summer and a successful harvest. I hope you all enjoy the Samhain this year. Don’t forget the Social Club’s Halloween Party! Kim Jackson

HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE AND BAKE SALE It’s not too early to start thinking about the holidays! Mark your calendars: The Holiday Boutique and Bake Sale will be on Saturday, November 7th!

Tables will be sold at the October Social Club General Meeting for $20 each. (First Tuesday in October) This is a great way to share and sell your handcrafted items to your neighbors and others for unique gifts and holiday decor! We will also be looking for home-baked goodies (perhaps with a holiday theme?) to stock the bake sale, so start testing your best holiday goodie recipes and watch for more info in the October Newsette! NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES We Live in a Flood Zone: PDR for this Winter By Enid Fox PDRReadying Neighborhood Watch Are you prepared for the upcoming 2026–2027 winter? NOAA recently confirmed a greater than 90% chance of a "Very Strong" El Niño event and a 69% chance it will be the strongest since records began in 1950. For Plaza Del Rey residents, that means above average rainfall, consecutive weeklong heavy rains, possible storm drain flooding, leaking roofs and overflowing gutters. The waterway behind the west side of PDR is a county flood prevention channel built by Valley Water in the 1960s. It drains into the Guadalupe Slough to protect our community. Every October, residents receive a Valley Water "FLOOD READY" pamphlet. Call the Sunnyvale Floodplain Managers at 408-730-7444 if you don’t have one. While Valley Water infrastructure projects increase local channel capacity, heavy storms can still cause localized blockages on our immediate streets. Protect your home with this action plan: • Clear Gutters NOW: Debris blocking street-level drains is the leading cause of local road flooding. Keep your street gutters clear as November approaches! • Track Stream Sensor 5074: Real-Time Data Map online (alertvalleywater.org) Located at 101 and Bayshore Frontage Rd. (E. Ahwanee Ave.), click the "Flood Watch" button to ON to see projected flood stages. View live cams (9024 and 9008) of the E. Channel behind PDR to monitor water levels. • Report Standing Water: Call the Sunnyvale Storm Drain Hotline at 408-730-7400 immediately if you notice street flooding during heavy downpours. You can also volunteer for the Adopt-a-Storm Drain program and keep a city drain near you free from debris. • Free Sandbags are available at Sunnyvale Corporation Yard, 221 Commercial St. and Valley Water Site at 1925 Embarcadero Rd.

Special Thank you Can you believe it? We’re already ¾ of the way through the year 2026! Your PdR Social Club certainly was busy during the 3 months of Summer. We had the Sale-a-Thon, Father’s Day Brunch, July 4th Flag Raising/Pancake Breakfast, National Night Out, and a whopping 12 very successful weeks of BBQ’s. The entire Social Club Broad would especially like to THANK the following volunteers for their help during these events. In no particular order: Guy Leper, David Ferreira, Diana Burnell, Jan McKean, Annie Lopiparo, Doug Scott and Cory. When you see them, please extend your thanks also for a job well done. Now, we’re not slowing down, but with the shorter days and the leaves starting to fall, things move at a different pace. School is truly back in session; sports and homework take up more time and even in California leaves start to fall. But don’t forget to keep checking the Newsettes for our exciting upcoming events. Just in October alone we have the Pancake Breakfast and our fun Halloween Party. We hope to see you there. It’s also a good time to remember some of the standard safety rules. Slow down (speed limit in the park is 15 MPH) in both your cars and other forms of transportation (bicycles, e-bikes, motorcycles, etc) and observe ALL rules of the road. Stop at stop signs and drive carefully. We have lots of people walking, and it only adds a moment of your time to be safe and not cause an accident.

Garlic and Rosemary Roasted Pork from Bill Funk’s Kitchen This marinates overnight, so you need to start it the day before!

½ cup Olive oil ¼ cup Balsamic Vinegar 2 Tablespoons cider vinegar 2 Tablespoons Honey 3 large garlic cloves, chopped 1 Tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary or 2 teaspoons dried 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 14- to 16- ounce pork tenderloin Blend first 7 ingredients in processor until rosemary and garlic are finely chopped. Place pork in heavy plastic bag. Pour half of marinade over pork (refrigerate remaining marinade for another use). Seal bag and refrigerate pork overnight, turning occasionally. Preheat oven to 375 F. Drain pork: discard marinade. Place pork in small roasting pan, roast until meat thermometer inserted into center registers 150 F, about 25 minutes. Slice pork thinly. 4 servings This marinade also good on chicken, lamb or beef, too.
