Submitting Articles for The Bell Ringer

Please send submissions, questions or concerns to the editor by 10th of the month, via your personal email, to the email listed below, in case we need more information. Submissions will run the same month, depending on available space and timing. Articles may be edited for length, spelling, grammar & clarity and need to be in a .docx or .doc file. We can use photos in .JPG or .PNG MS Publisher does not accept .HEIF .PDF file formats.

We do not publish religious articles. OMHA is a 501 C4, and allowed to be active in local politics and elections. Example: When rent control was “decontrolled” in 2011 by 3 councilmen, OMHA, along with Esther’s help, organized citizens to put rent control on the ballot in 2012, and we won. To Our Senior Moments Fans!

The 4th of July was a big success. We had 16 decorated golf carts and a couple of bike riders and one walking in the parade. Every street was covered with a lot of residents cheering them on. 1st place winners went to Tammy & Rick Drummond and Dan Manzano & Cynthia Favela, 2nd place went to Dwight & Kim Benner and 3rd place went to Dave & Kathy Fechter. The prize money will help reduce costs at the grocery store. The 4th picnic barbeque was fun and a great success. We had 86+ people in attendance. Harry and Rick grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, and most people brought a side dishes for at least six people. Faye Shinn announced her retirement from Senior Moments last month, but she will still play an important role in the background.

Remember September 23rd will be our first “Gala and Silent Auction”. We are excited to offer a wide variety of items to bid on. Please bring your check book or cash. Details to follow with colorful notices in the mail rooms and clubhouses. We encourage attendees to dress up for the evening, but not required. Senior Moments will provide appetizers, cookies coffee and water. BYOB.

Senior Moments will be dark until the Labor Day event. Food Thursdays will continue as usual.

Notes

 We serve coffee/water at functions and sometimes Mimosas at our breakfasts. You may bring your own drink in your own covered container.

 For potlucks please bring a main or side dish to serve at least 6 people!

 We never need rolls, (never).

 Breakfasts are 9 to 11, dinners start at 5 pm & we socialize, & have munchies to tide you over till dinner is served at 5:30/6, except for special events.

 White Elephant Sale Potluck bidding starts at 5 and dinner follows the bidding/sale. Donations must be clean and in good shape.

 We invite everyone to come get involved. There is no better way to get to know your neighbors! We love our volunteers and their ideas and suggestions!!

Last month Faye Shinn called to let me know she was retiring from Senior Moments and to edit the RSLR Organization page. Faye has been inspiring and leading many wonderful volunteers for almost 20 years, no doubt breaking a record after taking over for Carrie Merrifield. When first moving to RSLR in 2015, Faye was one of the first to make me feel at home, she was so gracious and inviting. I have no doubt you feel the same! Here are some great photos people shared with us! I must admit, Faye rarely made it easy for me to take her picture she was rarely sitting down!

Dear Fellow Gardeners,

August is the peak of blooming season for Plumeria rubra (white/ yellow center). In 1861 these trees were first brought to Hawaii from Thailand. Generally thought of as the Hawaiian lei flower the plants are actually native to Mexico near Cancun and further south into Central and South America. In every other part of the world except the USA they are referred to as frangipani. There are four basic rules for success. 1. Well draining, chunky porous soil. 2. Full sun minimum 68 hours. 3. Little water, very drought tolerant and no winter water when the plant loses its leaves and is dormant. 4. Feed once per month with phosphate high fertilizer during the growing season which is late spring all the way into fall. Best for: Tropical landscapes, patios, poolside planting, containers, sunny courtyards.

There are at least 100 different colors/cultivars of this tree. They range from white, pink, yellow, orange, cerise, or a combination of all these shades. Stenophylla has thin star-like curly petals. The limbs and leaves are also thin. Cuttings can be difficult to root making this type less commonly found. In USDA hardiness Zone 10 (that’s us) a Plumeria will typically grow 15-25 feet tall and as wide. There are dwarf varieties that max out from 6-8 feet tall and wide. Most homeowners will keep them pruned in order to keep the flowers at viewing height. Atkinson Plumeria is a local grower in Mt. Helix/La Mesa. He offers a Master Class on the San Diego Horticultural Society’s web page. They also have a couple of sales per year at which time you can tour the farm.

This tree has lush green leaves and waxy five petal flowers that are strongly scented. With proper care they can live long and reward the gardener year after year.

If you are growing in a container they require the above four steps for success as well. They will top out at 5 to 8 feet. I have some in the ground and some in pots. I have a dark red called “Hilo Beauty” that is in a container. Another called “Penang Peach” orange/pink/ peach with a yellow center in addition to a pale pink/cream/yellow center both of which are in the ground. This is a versatile small tree/shrub.

August is a transition month in Zone 10. Plant fast-growing summer veggies like beans and squash. Cucumbers, okra, corn, and flowers such as marigolds, zinnias, and cosmos can also be planted. Any of the gazania varieties enjoy the heat in August. You can start seedlings for the brassicas now for fall transplanting.

Senior Moments is an all-volunteer social group. We host most all the social functions for our homeowners at RSLR. Normally we sponsor 3 to 4 events each month, including breakfasts, potlucks, dinners & special events for holidays, entertainment, fund raisers and the Fresh Food Bank. All activities are listed in the community newsletter, website and Eblasts. Volunteers are always welcomed and much appreciated.

RSLR’s HOA, is for all homeowners. Monthly meetings are the 1st Saturday every month. Our HOA represents you, the homeowner, when meeting with park management to resolve issues affecting our homeowners. Your HOA volunteers wear many hats, volunteering to help plan and carry out every event, to attending and reporting on GSMOL meetings, to meeting with the park management on a constant basis with even more constant issues. There are several committee’s and volunteers are always welcome! Dues are $10 p/year and can be dropped in HAC’s mailbox in mail kiosk CH2.

OMHA is a 501 C4 representing all MHP homeowners in the City of Oceanside. Historically, known for getting voters out to support the City of Oceanside's 16B rent control in 2012 when 3 Republican council members voted to decontrol rent control. Last election we campaigned and donated to Esther Sanchez’s election, printed election materials and held meetings in our parks in support. Donations to candidates who support our community is where the majority of your $10 membership dues goes. In the past year OMHA has written letters to park owners on behalf of homeowners, regarding illegal practices involving $102K. So far $29K has been reimbursed or committed to homeowners, which includes $5,200.00 in our park. Dues are $10 p/year and membership forms are in CH2 under OMHA’s mail box.

A 501 C4, state-wide membership volunteer org. lobbying for stronger MRL (Mobile-Home Residency Laws) protecting homeowners. Our dues help pay for our full time lobbyist working in Sacramento with our legal advisor and States Representatives to pass bills that improve the MRL. GSMOL has been very busy and successful in the last passing MRL laws that significantly strengthen our cities rent control laws and making park owners more accountable to HCD who do not abide by the MRL. Park management must provide you a copy of the MRL yearly. Meetings are announced in Newsletter, eblast & website. Dues are $25 yearly.

Have an existing ramp and need an exemption?

If you want to know how to get an exemption from pulling and paying for a city building permit, Contact the city at: 760.435.4373, x 1 Blg. Dept. and ask for help with an exemption for your ramp. You will be able to file on-line and will need your case number that starts with “CE 26_ _ _ _”

Planning on selling your home in the near future?

It is a good idea as well as your right to request forms from park management in writing the park uses for the process of selling your home, including what the park gives to a buyer in order to approve their tenancy. The more you know, the better to protect your rights and investment. The MRL covers the subject, as does your R&Regs. If you have any questions please ask a board member in one of these organizations in our park: HOA, OMHA, or GSMOL.
