2019-20 DONOR IMPACT REPORT

THANK YOU The Cleveland Institute of Music’s 2019-20 academic year was a historic one. As we reflect on the start of our centennial, it is worth mentioning that reaching such a milestone is never inevitable. Doing so is a testament to our long tradition of educational and musical excellence, as well as our collective vision to be the future of classical music.

The 2019 fall semester brought to campus one of the most talented and diverse student bodies in our school’s history. Three hundred seventy-three of the world’s most talented classical music students arrived in Cleveland to study with our internationally acclaimed faculty. While virtually all students receive some level of financial aid, many are only able to pursue a career in music because of significant donor-supported scholarships. Five new full scholarships were established this year — covering tuition, room and board — bolstering our recruiting power and making real progress toward reducing the net cost of education at CIM, the top strategic imperative articulated in our strategic plan, Blueprint:100.

We hosted a slate of renowned guest conductors and artists to lead the CIM Orchestra, coach the New Music Ensemble and present inspiring workshops and master classes.

Students worked closely with Caroline Emery, the Dover Quartet, and Kulas Visiting Artists such as JoAnn Falletta, Andrew Grams, Mélisse Brunet and many others.

In a year of many musical highlights, both opera productions were especially successful: the Ohio premiere of Philip Glass’ The Juniper Tree in fall 2019, followed by Mozart’s always popular The Magic Flute in spring 2020. In February 2020, we welcomed two of the world’s greatest pianists to Mixon Hall for a benefit concert raising scholarship funds. CIM Artistin-Residence Sergei Babayan performed a breathtaking duo piano recital with his former student at CIM, Daniil Trifonov (AC ’13, AD ’15), regarded as “arguably today’s leading classical virtuoso.”

Newer initiatives continued to grow in their reach, reputation and impact. Our Musical Pathway Fellowship — for talented local Black and Latinx classical musicians in middle and high school — has joined the ranks of the nation’s prominent pathway programs. The Center for Innovative Musicianship (CIM²) has blossomed into an industry-leading model that prepares students for a modern career in music. Through CIM², our conservatory students provide hundreds of hours of free private lessons to economically disadvantaged high school students at Cleveland School of the Arts.

While the spring semester began as planned, in mid-March it became clear that the coronavirus pandemic, and the health and safety of our community, demanded immediate action. We canceled concerts, moved academic courses online, closed student housing and temporarily reimagined the in-person interaction that is core to music instruction.

We preserved the student experience in every way possible — ensuring that students could complete their degrees, helping piano and percussion students relocate their instruments and maintaining scholarships. In another historic first, we held our commencement ceremony live online, celebrating with heartfelt festivities that reached a record 2,730 people around the world.

Through it all, construction continued on our beautiful new student residence hall, 1609 Hazel, which opened on time and on budget this summer. For the first time, CIM students will enjoy a residence hall purposely built for music, featuring 22 state-of-the-art sound-isolated Wenger practice rooms.

Despite the challenging final months of the year, we are pleased to report that CIM posted its 25th consecutive balanced budget. While much good work was done throughout the year, we can attribute the final result to prudent and wise financial management; flexible and adaptable faculty, staff and students; and the extraordinary generosity of our community of donors in response to the pandemic.

Thank you for making all of this possible. It is because of our community — because of you — that CIM is the educational and musical powerhouse we are today. With your continued partnership, CIM’s next 100 years will be as magnificent as the first.

CIM’s strategic plan, Blueprint:100, sets out several long-range goals. In 2019-20, we reported our 25th consecutive balanced budget while also marking progress in the areas of scholarship, student housing, practice rooms and piano replacement.

Over the next decade, we aim to reduce the average net cost of education to our students from $37,500 (2017) to approximately $27,500. Today, the average net cost of education for our students stands at $33,677. In 2019-20, new donations totaling $2.26M were added to the endowment, bringing new funds raised for education and scholarships to an equivalent of 15 of the 50 full scholarships necessary to meet our goal.

With the opening of the new student housing complex at 1609 Hazel, CIM has successfully created housing for 126 individuals, replacing the 102 spaces formerly available at Cutter House. This new space is a significant improvement to the living and learning environment for our students, including 22 state-of-the-art practice rooms, contributing to CIM’s exceptional 3:1 student to practice room ratio.

CIM maintains 188 pianos, currently valued at $10.2 million. These instruments sustain intensive use and require continual investment. In September 2019, with generous donor support, we purchased eight newly refurbished Steinways as part of our long-term piano replacement plans.
