2020-21 DONOR IMPACT REPORT

A YEAR OF SILVER LININGS I am prouder today of CIM’s students, faculty and staff than I have ever been. When the 2020-21 year began last summer, the world was full of uncertainty. But with the unwavering commitment of our trustees, donors and supporters, the Cleveland Institute of Music navigated an unprecedented year, continuing the training of our talented students while guarding the health of our community and, amazingly, moving forward on a number of important strategic initiatives. In many ways, our school is stronger and better positioned for the future than it was a year ago. Today, many of the new protocols of the past year remain as part of our routine. Masks, distancing, symptom checks and virtual learning are tools we continue to use as appropriate. Getting to this point took enormous resilience, effort and creativity from all of us at CIM, and I offer my profound thanks. While many of you were not able to visit CIM over the last year, we looked for every opportunity to share music with you, livestreaming to your living rooms and relishing the rare opportunities in warmer weather to gather for live music outdoors. Everything we do is for the students, but ultimately, the music gains its full richness and texture from having an audience. Creativity abounded. Without in-person audiences, our livestreamed concerts and recitals reached more than 245,000 people worldwide. With limits on indoor singing, the voice and opera team created an opera on film, with each musician and singer recording their part individually and filming outside with a professional production company. Without the traditional constraints on delivering academic content, we created new online training modules and general education course offerings that proved wildly successful. Following a three-year international search, we were delighted to name Carlos Kalmar as director of orchestral and conducting programs and principal conductor. Audiences will benefit from his tremendous artistic abilities on the podium, while he burnishes our reputation as a powerhouse for orchestral training. This year, the Future of Music Faculty Fellowship has been a proud addition to CIM’s partnership with the Sphinx Organization and will impact the diversity of collegiate music faculty across the country. Meanwhile, our Musical Pathway Fellowship for young Black and Latinx students in middle and high school is creating a more diverse pipeline of musicians who will help change the face of classical music. In spring 2021, our first class of fellows graduated from high school – and all were accepted at top collegiate music programs and conservatories. We have demonstrated why this institution has endured for 100 years: because of our ability to link arms and face difficult challenges together. This year may have been unusual, but it has also been extraordinary and filled with silver linings because of you and our community of supporters. Thank you for making all of this possible.

WITH HEARTFELT THANKS As CIM enters its second century, the Institute has never been stronger, its future never brighter. As I reflect on my first year as chair of the Board of Trustees, I am as proud of what we have accomplished as I am optimistic about the course we are charting for the future. Every year is a chance to begin anew, and this year was no exception. All of CIM – students, Trustees, faculty and staff – came together this year to find new ways of teaching and learning, new ways of performing and creating, new ways of serving the community that has sustained us for more than a century. What we achieved together is nothing short of extraordinary. I extend my heartfelt thanks to each of you. Historic levels of philanthropy and careful financial management added a 26th year to CIM’s track record of balanced budgets, with annual fund results of more than $2.5 million. I offer my deep thanks to the funders who contributed to this success. Special thanks go to Cuyahoga Arts & Culture and the Kulas Foundation, who have been consistent leading supporters for decades. Our thanks also to the State of Ohio for allocating funds to critical new cybersecurity initiatives designed to keep our community safe online. In a year in which almost all events were virtual, our gala went virtual, too. The first annual Luminaries benefit concert honored Barbara Robinson for her five decades of incredible support, featured a medley of illustrious alumni and faculty performances – some live, some from the archives – and raised more than $130,000 for scholarships. On the academic side, we created an innovative new leadership structure with the position of provost and deans to fortify CIM’s academic affairs while raising our profile locally and nationally. With the appointment of Scott Harrison as executive vice president & provost, CIM has the visionary team in place to power the Institute forward in its second century of creating the future of classical music. Which brings me to one of the most significant decisions of the year: President & CEO Paul Hogle has advanced nearly every area of the Institute in his five years here: enrollment, diversity, philanthropy, facilities, technology, programs and academic success. With enthusiasm, the Board extended his contract for seven more years, an important step in securing a successful future for CIM. Despite the pandemic, the 2020-21 academic year marked a proud moment in CIM’s history. The past year brought out the best of the CIM community: imagination and creativity, fortitude and resilience. While we celebrate the legacy of a century of musical excellence, we look forward to forging an even brighter future.

CIM carefully navigated the operational challenges driven by Covid-19 over the 2020-21 fiscal year with strong donor support, while also growing our endowment. As articulated in our Blueprint:100 strategic plan, our long-range focus remains on reduced school size, lower net cost of attendance and increased scholarship support. During the admissions period leading up to 2020-21, CIM anticipated lower enrollment numbers due to the pandemic, and we were operationally and budgetarily prepared for the 9% reduction in student numbers we eventually saw. We received special one-time funds via the CARES Act and US Department of Education that were used to offset pandemic-related expenses. As we move to a planned smaller school size, we continue to adjust our operations to match. The pandemic caused a modest acceleration in this plan. Over the next decade, we aim to continue reducing the cost of attendance for our students. The current-year average net cost is just under $33,000, representing a 14% reduction since 2017. Impressively, CIM’s donors were strong and steady in their support over the past year, making gifts to the annual fund that provided a vital bulwark during an uncertain year. Their support led to a 26th consecutive balanced budget and contributed $941,000 to the endowment. Our endowment draw remained steady at $2.4 million, while historically high investment returns helped the endowment market value reach $54 million as of June 30, 2021.
