LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Friends, As I reflect upon my 18 years of service to the Cleveland Institute of Music as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased that so many of our students have achieved so much and that CIM is a special place to make music.

This final year has been one to remember. In the fall, CIM displayed its international significance when we welcomed a delegation from the prestigious Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary.

MacArthur “Genius” award recipient and two-time Grammy award winner, Gunther Schuller, was our Kulas Visiting Artist this year, and in May he delivered the Commencement Address and conducted a CIM ensemble playing one of his last commissioned pieces, as he passed away in June. Read more on pages 9-10.

Two personal highlights were receiving an Honorary Doctorate at that same ceremony and celebrating with family, friends and CIM supporters at the Women’s Committee Benefit Celebrating American Classics in March. I am humbled by the honors.

My fellow trustees helped make my tenure as board chair especially meaningful and I want to thank them for their support, their time and their talents. I also want to thank all the CIM staff members I’ve worked with over these years; it has been a great pleasure.

Finally, thank you for your interest in the students at CIM and for sharing your enthusiasm as a donor and an audience member. With your continued support and the leadership of our new board chair, Richard Hipple, I am confident that CIM will be the center for the education of the complete musician of the 21st century.

ACCOLADES AND PRIZES Our talented musicians once again had a successful year. Here are highlights:

• Alumnus Frank Huang (BM ’02, Weilerstein) was appointed concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic in April 2015.

• Jinjoo Cho (PS ’15, Laredo) won the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis in September 2014.

• Leah Ferguson, viola student of Robert Vernon, was awarded a coveted spot in the National YoungArts

Foundation. HBO’s three-time Emmy® nominated documentary series, Young Arts Master Class, which follows the Foundation, featured Ferguson on the show in October 2014.

The album was produced by CIM alumnus and Director of Recording Arts and Services, Alan Bise (BM’94, Thomas Knab), and was engineered by CIM faculty member Bruce Egre, both of whom also received Grammy’s for their work.

The Starling Foundation selected faculty member Jaime Laredo’s Studio for the Starling Scholars Program.

•

Alumna Amy Schwartz Moretti (BM ’98/MM ’01, Weilerstein) was awarded the 2015 Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year: Solo or Chamber Ensemble for her recording, Bartok: Chamber Works for Violin, Vol. 3 with Canadian violinist James Ehnes in March 2014. This is her second consecutive Juno Award.

Sophomore Andrew Stock, composition student of Keith Fitch, was one of ten composers from around the country selected for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s National Composers Intensive, Next on Grand New Music Festival in May 2015.

•

Students Daniel Parvin (Anita Pontremoli), Marissa Stygles (Joshua Smith) and Tiffany Tieu (William Preucil), were featured in the New York Times for their residency at Judson Manor in May 2014.

• CIM voice students swept

the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Student Auditions, held in April in Columbus, Ohio, earning top honors in several categories.

EVENTS CIM presented more than 100 concert series events last season. Highlights include: •

The Women’s Committee held the tremendously successful “Celebrating American Classics” benefit in Severance Hall, which honored Mal and Barbara Mixon and featured Carl Topilow, Vinson Cole, Chad Hoopes and a special appearance by Mark Nolan, WMJI 105.7.

•

CIM’s Quartet-In-Residence, the Cavani Quartet, celebrated 30 vibrant years of music making by offering concerts throughout the season while continuing to bring their love of music to elementary schools in Cleveland and around the country.

•

CIM welcomed a delegation from the historic and prestigious Franz Liszt Academy of Music (Budapest, Hungary) to Cleveland for a special collaborative series focused on a sharing of musical culture which included master classes, lectures and free concerts.

•

The late Gunther Schuller was CIM’s Kulas Visiting Artist, a designation which afforded the CIM community three visits from the musical icon. Schuller held master classes, seminars and lectures culminating in the premier of a specially commissioned work and his commencement address to the 2015 graduating class in May.

• CIM Opera Theater presented fully staged productions of Handel’s Alcina and Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito, along with a program of favorite scenes in the spring.

CIM WELCOMES NEW TRUSTEES CHARLES P. COOLEY III Mr. Cooley served as senior vice president and chief financial officer of The Lubrizol Corporation from 1998 until he retired in 2011 following the purchase of the company by Berkshire Hathaway. He previously held various finance positions at Atlantic Richfield Company and worked in the national banking division of Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company. He serves on the boards of directors of Modine Manufacturing Company and KeyCorp and is chairman of the board at Hawken School.

GARY W. POTH Mr. Poth is senior vice president and Key Private Bank executive for KeyCorp’s East Ohio district. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Poth served in other executive positions with KeyBank, National City Bank and JP Morgan’s Private Client Group. In June 2015, he was named to head up Key Private Bank’s family wealth line. Prior to his banking career, he served as a naval submarine officer for six years. He is also a current board member and treasurer for the Cleveland Sight Center.

IN MEMORIAM During 2014-15 we mourned the loss of one current Trustee David Simon (1987-2014) and two current Honorary Trustees Stanley Adelstein (2007-2014) and Ted Brown (2003-2015), along with four other former Trustees Francis Beam (1982-1993), Hal Douthit (1979-2001), Stephen P. Jones (1983-1986) and Thomas Quintrell (1974-1980).

IMPRESSIONS OF HUNGARY

Franz Liszt Academy of Music visits CIM Last fall, CIM hosted a delegation from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest for a week-long collaboration that offered free concerts, master classes and symposia, highlighting Hungarian music and culture while celebrating the unique partnership between both institutions.

Born out of a developing relationship between CIM and the Liszt Academy, the collaborative concerts featured works by renowned Hungarian composers as well as new pieces composed by students inspired by these great artists.

At the heart of the visit was the culminating Liszt Reflections concert, which offered a night of Liszt and Liszt-inspired new works by student composers from both schools. The night seamlessly moved from a piece by Liszt to the student work inspired by it, expertly performed by an ensemble made up of both Franz Liszt Academy and CIM students.

The Piano Masterworks of Great Hungarian Composers concert provided a program of Liszt, Bartók and Dubrovay performed by professionallevel student artists from both CIM and the Franz Liszt Academy. The audience was filled and many people from Cleveland’s robust Hungarian community were in attendance to see some of their favorite composers come alive.

CELEBRATING AMERICAN CLASSICS A CIM Women’s Committee Benefit

On Saturday, March 7, the Severance Hall audience was treated to a night of Carl Topilow’s swinging clarinet on Glenn Miller standards, Vinson Cole singing selections from Copland’s Old American Songs, Chad Hoopes performing Barber’s beautiful violin concerto and a special appearance by Mark Nolan of WMJI 105.7 in a concert hosted by the CIM Women’s Committee. The benefit received a tremendous turnout, boasting a total of 1,350 in attendance.

In addition to supporting student scholarships, this benefit honored long-time CIM supporters Mal and Barbara Mixon. Benefit guests enjoyed a silent auction, a gourmet dinner and premier seating for the concert. Complete with a Marine color guard that ceremoniously marched on the Severance Hall stage and Mark Nolan’s narration of America the Beautiful with the CIM Orchestra, the night was a dazzling success for all.

GUNTHER SCHULLER A Musical Icon

CIM’s Kulas Visiting Artist this year was the late musical icon, Gunther Schuller. Over the course of the semester, CIM had the fortune of hosting Schuller for multiple visits, as he presented master classes, seminars and lectures. In May he gave the Commencement Address to the 2015 graduating class and conducted an ensemble of CIM students as they premiered an original composition written by Schuller especially for the occasion.

During his time at CIM, Schuller imparted his advice on everything from horn playing, to taking time to listen while playing in an orchestra, to focusing on the “we” rather than the “me” in life.

Schuller worked with Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie, won two Grammy awards in classical music categories and received a Pulitzer Prize for composition, so it was clear why President Joel Smirnoff introduced Schuller at CIM as one of the greatest musicians our country has produced. In June, shortly after his final remarks at CIM, Schuller passed away at age 89.
