We were honored to be this year’s co-chairs for the 22nd Annual Catoctin Affair; then a pandemic happened, and we had to reimagine our event. We are thrilled to present Catoctin Affair 2.0, Stand with MHA – A Virtual Celebration!

Although we can’t be together in person, we’d like to recognize the dedicated work of the Mental Health Association and celebrate the many advocates who STAND with MHA, as mental health matters now more than ever.

The Catoctin Affair Committee is made up of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to raise awareness and funding to support the vital programs of MHA. We can’t THANK them enough for their commitment and hard work.

MHA's Response to COVID 19 Throughout the stressful and anxiety-ridden situation that has occurred with the COVID-19 pandemic, MHA has continued our work of saving families, saving lives, every single day.

We thank you for the opportunity to recognize all of the good work our staff at the Mental Health Association continues to do to support our community in becoming mentally and emotionally well. We were disappointed that we had to cancel our annual Catoctin Affair due to gathering restrictions related to COVID-19. However, we are grateful that you continued to STAND with MHA with your financial support, donation of supplies and simply checking in to make sure our essential staff is doing okay.

To celebrate you, our advocates, and the work being done at MHA, we created a new event and are thrilled to present Catoctin Affair 2.0, Stand with MHA - A Virtual Celebration.

As we began to recognize the impact of COVID-19, we know that keeping our critical services open and taking care of emotional and mental health needs is more important than ever. I’m extremely proud that MHA’s essential workers have continued to address the critical needs of our community and provide connections and support when they are most needed.

We know that the needs for mental health services will be greater than ever in the coming months. We hope that you can continue to STAND with us so that we can sustain the work necessary to support our community moving forward.

Our Vision A community where children can grow and thrive without fear; where good mental health is valued; where people of all ages know when and how to seek help for emotional or family problems without shame; and where everyone will have access to mental health services without barriers.

Mental Health Association's Programs and Services PREPARING RESILIENT CHILDREN Helping children learn mental and emotional resilience now will help them adapt to the situations and setbacks they'll face throughout life, and to become the strong stable citizens our community needs. We work to give children the emotional, social, and cognitive skills they'll carry throughout their lives - into the classroom, the workplace, and the home.

SECURING VULNERABLE FAMILIES Many family situations present pressing challenges that affect everyone in them. They not only disrupt entire families; they can leave children without a stable or permanent home and can increase a child's risk for struggles later in life - like mental illness, unemployment, even prison. Through our work with vulnerable families, we provide support, stability, and the promise of a better tomorrow.

Mental health matters to me because...

"You were there when my sister attempted suicide and we didn't know where to turn."

FACING CRISES TOGETHER We all encounter moments and challenges that we struggle to face alone.

These are more than urgent challenges. They're the pivot points of life.

Because no one should have to face these struggles alone, MHA is here - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We're helping our community - we're saving lives - every single day.

SUPPORTING OUR WHOLE COMMUNITY MHA does more than support the thousands of individuals who seek out our services each year - we provide mental health education and advocacy on a community-wide level, raising awareness of the importance of mental health - and of mental health services.

This work strengthens our whole community by encouraging those who feel alone to seek out support; promoting understanding; and bolstering mental and emotional well-being in schools, businesses, and homes.

Mental health matters to me because...

"MHA Walk-In Behavioral Health Services were available to me when I was in crisis at 6:30 on a Wednesday evening; when receiving help was critical."

24-Hour Call Center offers information and referral, support and crisis intervention; entry point for mobile crisis and walk-in services.

Child Care Choices provides training, technical assistance and resources for early childhood providers.

Counseling Services offers professional outpatient therapy services to all ages on a sliding fee basis, regardless of an individual's inability to pay.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers represent the best interests of foster children in the court system, advocating for them to have safe, permanent homes.

Families Impacted by Incarceration Program supports the bond between parents, caregivers or other family members while supporting children affected by incarceration. The program offers workshops in the detention center and provides family coaching.

Health Families provides evidence-based, intensive, in-home case management supporting first-time parents and infants to age five.

Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training which educates non-mental health professionals skills they can use to identify and help someone who is experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.

Parent Coaching offers in-home or center-based one-on-one coaching for parents.

Partnership for Emotionally Resilient Kids (PERKS) helps to develop resilient children, ages birth through five years old, by offering on-site assistance to child care providers and parents.

Suicide Prevention/Intervention Training helps people learn to be suicide alert and to intervene when someone has thoughts of suicide.

Supervised Visitation/Monitored Transfer provides a safe, neutral location for a parent and child to develop, renew or sustain a health familial relationship in cases where a parent has been abusive or otherwise unable to be with a child unsupervised.

Survivors of Suicide Support Group is a monthly support group for adults who have lost loved ones to suicide, facilitated by a trained facilitator.

Systems Navigation provides assistance to families who have children with multiple or intensive needs, helping the family navigate the complex system of care.

Telephone Reassurance offers scheduled outgoing calls to the home-bound and elderly who are isolated and prone to depression.

Walk-In Behavioral Health provides free, immediate, face-to-face support for anyone experiencing a non-life threatening emotional, mental, family or relationship crisis.

Our Program Divisions

Child Care Choices Child Care Choices

MHA's Child Care Choices is a program providing comprehensive solutions for new and existing early childhood professionals offered at low or no cost. Resources include an extensive lending library, laminator, die cutter, and our caring staff. Our professional staff can help with program support, accredidation trainings, professional development, and child care provider business solutions.

Community Support Services Community Support Services

Community Support Services includes our 24 hour call center, Walk-in Behavioral Crisis services, and Systems Navigation. Each of these services is multi-faceted with the goals being to prepare resilient children, support vulnerable families, face crises together, and support our community. Our call center answers local, state, and national hotlines with a focus on suicide prevention and connection to community resources—we are the local 211 MD center and the local National Suicide Prevention Lifeline center for western Maryland. Our Walk-in service is available 76 hours a week to provide urgent assistance for crises and connection to community resources.

Supporting families is the specialty of Systems Navigation. Our Navigators help families find resource connection to services for their children when they are having difficulty navigating the human services system. The Navigator comes alongside the family providing advocacy and education to increase the family’s ability to access needed services. Crises and connection is the focus of our Community Support Services.

Counseling Services Counseling Services

Our counseling services program is one of the few professional therapy centers in Frederick County that offers care on a sliding fee basis. Our therapists provide services in a confidential, supportive environment that enhances the dignity and potential of our clients including young children, older adults, individuals, couples and families who might be experiencing: depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, anger, child behavior issues, couples/ marital issues, life transformation and trauma.

Family Support Services Family Support Services

Encompassing several of MHA’s programs, Family Support Services support and prepare children and families for success and stability. Many situations present pressing challenges that affect everyone in the family emotionally, mentally, and developmentally. Through our Family Support Services, MHA provides guidance and information to first time parents; works to find loving, permanent homes for children caught in an overburdened court system; provides a safe location where parents and children can spend time together to renew or sustain supportive relationships; and works to support the bond between parents, care-givers, or other family members impacted by incarceration. Helping children learn mental and emotional resilience now will help them adapt to the situations and setbacks they will face throughout life, and to become the strong, stable citizens our community needs.
