From the Headteacher
Welcome to this summer edition of MGS News. As I look back over the past months, I am struck once again by how swiftly the year has passed and how naturally we find ourselves reflecting on all that we have experienced and achieved together. Each academic year brings its own challenges and triumphs, but what remains constant - and what has been especially evident this year - is the deep sense of belonging that binds us as a community. So, as we reach the close of another academic year, I want to extend
my heartfelt thanks to every member of the MGS community: students, staff, families, governors, and friends of the school, for the commitment, resilience, and kindness that have shaped these past months. This has been a year defined not only by achievement, but by the strength of our shared spirit, and I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished together.
The summer term has been filled with moments that remind us what it means to be part of
MGS. We began by celebrating the 120th anniversary of the CCF - honouring a tradition that has shaped generations of Maidstonians and continues to instil leadership, service, and pride in our cadets today. We also welcomed the return of the Senior Sports Dinner - a wonderful opportunity to recognise the dedication and accomplishments of our senior athletes. of the arts that brought students, families, and staff together in appreciation of the performers’ hard work. Our Sports Day once again captured the essence of our school spirit - friendly competition, encouragement from the sidelines, and a shared joy in being part of something larger than ourselves. And even the challenges brought by the very warm weather became moments that revealed our collective resilience, as students and staff supported one another with good humour and determination. Yet, between these larger events, we have also witnessed countless quieter moments of kindness, support, and personal accomplishment - gestures that often go unseen but which truly define who we are as a community.
Of course, the passing of time brings change - change to our environment and change to the people who shape our daily lives. This term has seen the beginning of Phase 2 of our toilet project, which will provide improved facilities for our students, as well as the remodelling of the main school reception - a transformation that will enhance the way we welcome visitors and reflect more clearly what it means to be a Maidstonian. These developments are important, but they are only part of the story. MGS is, above all, about its people, and the most significant changes we experience at this time of year are the farewells we offer to valued colleagues who have contributed so much to our community.
This year, we say goodbye to several cherished members of staff whose dedication has shaped the life of the school in profound and lasting ways. We thank Maya, who leaves us in September, for the warmth, dedication, and care she has shown in keeping the heart of our school clean, welcoming, and ready for us all to thrive each day. We express our gratitude to Mr Rothwell, whose four years of steady guidance as Sixth Form Learning Support Supervisor have supported countless Year 12 students through the challenges of A level study. We bid farewell to Miss Sandhu, whose enthusiasm and expertise in Psychology have inspired many, and who now moves to a school closer to home as she balances the joys and demands of family life. We thank Mr Sparkes for his six years of leadership in Student Services, where his calm, committed presence has supported students through both everyday routines and more difficult moments. We celebrate Mrs Martin, whose nine years of creativity and passion in Film and Media have shaped the aspirations of so many, and who now takes on an exciting new role as Head of Department elsewhere in Kent. We recognise the exceptional service of Mrs Blatchford, whose 17 years of quiet efficiency, care, and steadfast first aid support have been a source of comfort and reassurance to generations of students. We honour Mrs Spendley, whose 19 years as attendance and inclusion officer have strengthened the fabric of our community and helped secure national recognition
for the school’s attendance achievements. We thank Mr Ashenfelter for 26 years of inspiring artistic expression and for bringing such energy and humour to the growth of basketball at MGS. And finally, we pay tribute to Mr Moody, whose extraordinary 33 year career as a gifted chemist, mentor, and colleague marks the end of an era. Each of these individuals leaves a legacy that will continue to shape the school long after they have moved on, and we offer them our deepest gratitude and warmest good wishes.
So, as we look ahead to the summer holiday, I hope that all members of the MGS community find time for rest, reflection, and renewal. Thank you for everything you have contributed to MGS this year - your effort, your kindness, and your belief in what we can achieve together. I look forward to welcoming everyone back in September for another year of learning, growth, and shared success.

Buckmore Park 24
In April, MGS motorsport took on the Buckmore Park 24 Hour, a prestigious endurance race held at the iconic Buckmore Park Kart Circuit in Kent.
Racing continuously through the day and night, the event tested stamina, teamwork and resilience as drivers, engineers and support crew worked together through changing conditions and the pressure of overnight racing. Out of 30 competing teams, the MGS Motorsport team finished an impressive 9th overall, a fantastic achievement in such a demanding event.
This race marked an important milestone for MGS Motorsport and showcased what students can achieve when passion, preparation and teamwork come together beyond the classroom.
Swimming Success
Congratulations to Tom H (Year 7, College House) on a fantastic achievement in swimming. Earlier in May, Tom competed at the South East Regional Swimming Championships in Winchester for the first time, representing Maidstone Swimming Club. Against strong competition from across the region, Tom finished:
• 12th in the 200m backstroke
A huge thank you to the staff who took part, supported the team and went along to watch, and in particular to the staff, family and friends for supporting the team throughout the weekend.
Well done to everyone involved in making this such a memorable and successful experience.
• 15th in the 100m backstroke
Tom also ranked 3rd among 12 year olds in both events, which is an excellent result in a combined 12 and 13 age group.
Even better, Tom has now qualified for the Scottish National Championships in Aberdeen this July.

Languagenuts
From 20 April to 5 May, our KS3 and KS4 students took part in the UK-wide Languagenut competition, completing language activities in their own time and building their skills beyond the classroom.
For the first time, MGS has had two students finish in the top 12 nationally - an outstanding result!
• Viann K (Year 7, College House)– 1st in school and 11th in the UK
• Ibrahim H (Year 7, Barton House) – 2nd in school and 12th in the UK
Both students achieved incredible scores and were awarded prizes by Languagenut.
A brilliant reflection of their hard work and commitment. Thank you to Mrs Belver, Head of French, for her support. Well done to everyone who took part.
Destination Dance Rigzen’s Gold
A fantastic achievement for Ryan P (Year 9, Tonbridge House), who competed at the Destination Dance National Finals earlier this term. After qualifying in multiple categories, Ryan achieved first place in his Tap Solo, becoming the national champion for his age group. A brilliant result and a reflection of his hard work and determination. Well done, Ryan
We are incredibly proud of Rigzen L. (Year 10, Tonbridge House), who won Gold at the British International Open Taekwondo 2026 in Manchester this term. This World Taekwondo G1 ranked flagship event, held at the National Cycling Centre, welcomes hundreds of junior athletes from across the UK and around the world. Competing
in his first G1 international competition, Rigzen represented Great Britain in the final and secured top place after an outstanding performance. Selected for the British Taekwondo Development Squad last year, his success reflects exceptional dedication, discipline and commitment to his sport. A fantastic achievement and a brilliant example of pursuing excellence beyond the classroom. Well done, Rigzen.
Combined Cadet Force
Fleet Air Arm Museum
A fantastic day for our Combined Cadet Force in early May, as RN and RAF cadets visited the Fleet Air Arm Museum.
Pictured in front of the iconic Sea King helicopter, whose striking split design reflects its Royal Navy and RAF Search and Rescue heritage, the moment perfectly captures the shared spirit of our cadets. First introduced in the 1960s, the Sea King became one of the UK’s most trusted search and rescue aircraft, carrying out life saving missions in some of the toughest conditions.
The visit was a great success, and we are already looking at making this a regular trip for our Year 9 RN and RAF recruits.
A big thank you to the Fleet Air Arm Museum for hosting us, and to the staff who accompanied and supported our cadets throughout the day.
Royal Naval College
Our Naval CCF cadets recently visited the Britannia Royal Naval College, where Royal Navy officers begin their training.
The college is known for developing leadership, resilience and strong decision-making, and the visit gave cadets a clear sense of what is expected in that environment. It was an opportunity to step beyond school and see how the skills they
are building now connect to real roles and responsibilities.
Experiences like this help students develop confidence and perspective, while reinforcing the value of teamwork and discipline both within the CCF and back in school.
A memorable and worthwhile visit.
Army Camp
Well done to our Year 9 Army Cadets on completing their first fieldcraft exercise in May.
After several months of training, cadets put their skills into practice through a range of activities, including reconnaissance patrols, navigation and first aid scenarios. The exercise concluded with section and platoon level activity, giving them the opportunity to apply what they had learned.
Fieldcraft plays an important role in cadet training, helping to build teamwork, resilience and confidence. These are qualities that carry back into the classroom, supporting learning and helping students develop into more rounded individuals.
Thank you to the SNCOs and CFAVs who supported the cadets and helped deliver a successful exercise.
Beyond the Classroom
Silver DofE
Well done to our 28 students who successfully completed their Silver The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award assessed expedition in the New Forest in late June.
Silver DofE is a significant challenge, requiring at least six months of commitment to volunteering, physical activity and skills development, before students undertake a three-day, two-night expedition.
Throughout the weekend, students demonstrated resilience, teamwork and independence as they navigated routes, carried their equipment and worked together to complete the expedition successfully.
A fantastic achievement for all involved and a reflection of the dedication shown throughout their Silver Award journey.
Bronze Award
Well done to our Year 9 students who successfully completed their Bronze The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award assessed expedition this term.
A total of 68 students took part,
exploring the Kent countryside near Tunbridge Wells and camping overnight at Adamswell Scout Campsite. Despite some challenging weather, all showed great resilience, teamwork and determination.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is an important part of life at MGS, helping students develop confidence, independence and practical skills through a combination of volunteering, physical activity, new skills and expedition experience.
For parents of students currently in Year 8, this offers a valuable opportunity as their children move into Year 9.

Fletcher Trophy Winners
Congratulations to our students who helped the Maidstone District U15 team secure a 2–1 win over Brighton District in the Kent Schools FA U15 Fletcher Trophy Final in May. We are proud to see five MGS students representing the team:

Theatre Bound
A wonderful evening for our GCSE and A Level drama students this week, who travelled to the National Theatre earlier in May to watch War Horse.
Trips like this are an important part of life at MGS. We encourage students to take their learning beyond the classroom, and experiencing a production like War Horse brings stories to life in a powerful and memorable way.
Challenge Cup Winners
At the end of April, several of our students competed in the TourInternational Under 13 South Coast Festival of Rugby 2026 Challenge Cup.
Representing Aylesford Bulls RFC, the team finished the festival as Challenge Cup winners, following an exciting and demanding programme of matches against teams from across the south of England. Max B (Y8, Corpus Christi), Harrison G (Y8, College) and Hugo D (Y8, Barton) were among those who took part and represented their club with great determination.
We are always proud to support students as they balance their studies with opportunities like this, and we extend our thanks to the families who provide such continual encouragement and support throughout their MGS journey. Congratulations to everyone involved.
Kent Schools’ Golf Championship
Well done to Alex O’B (Year 8, College) and Henry O’B (Year 8, College), who represented MGS at the Kent Schools’ Golf Championship at Prince’s Golf Club on 28 April.
Playing in a field of 66 competitors, and facing tough conditions with winds of up to 30mph, both students showed great resilience and commitment. They finished an impressive 15th overall, with a combined score of 215 (+71).
Prince’s is a challenging links course, and performing so well on their first visit is a great achievement. It was a fantastic experience, and we are pleased to hear they are already looking forward to competing again next year. Well done to both.
MGS Pickleball
Pickleball has arrived at MGS and it is proving very popular. Our Pickleball Club, launched at the start of term for Year 7 and Year 8 students, now has 50 members, with 42 students attending a recent session.
Almost every student who joined was completely new to the sport, demonstrating just how quickly it can be picked up and enjoyed. Combining elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK and appeals to a wide range of abilities.
We are delighted with the enthusiasm shown by students and look forward to continuing the club next year, with plans to expand participation opportunities further.
Art Summer Show
Our Art Exhibition took place across a week in mid June. This year’s exhibition showcased a wide range of student work, from detailed photographic studies to more experimental and conceptual pieces. Alongside this, there were creative reinterpretations of familiar forms, including textiles and sculptural work that challenge expectations and invite closer inspection. The variety on display reflected the freedom students are given to explore their own ideas and develop their own style.
District Champions
Our U15A football team, who secured a superb 7-2 win in the District Cup Final at the Gallagher Stadium in early May.
After going 2–0 down in the opening 10 minutes against a strong Lenham side, the team showed real composure to settle into the match and build momentum. A dominant final spell saw MGS take control and finish strongly to complete an impressive turnaround.
An intense and memorable match, played at a fantastic venue and a great experience for all involved. Thank you to Mr Cooper for his leadership of the team, and to Brian Peñaloza for these excellent photographs and for his continued support as part of our parent community.

Business Challenge
A great experience for our Year 9 students, who recently took part in our Annual Business Challenge. Working alongside local employers, students developed ideas to solve real business challenges and presented them at the end of the programme. It was an excellent opportunity to build confidence, teamwork and communication skills, while gaining insight into how organisations operate.
At MGS, we place real value on connecting what students learn in the classroom with experiences beyond it. Opportunities like this help students see how their studies relate to future pathways and develop the skills they will need moving forward.
Thank you to all the individuals and organisations involved, with particular thanks to Alison Temple and her Firebird Training team for delivering such an engaging programme.

ESFA U12
Champions Cup Plate Final
Well done to Charlie C (Year 7, College) and Sammy H (Year 7, Barton) who were part of the Maidstone District team that reached the ESFA U12 Champions Cup Plate Final. After an impressive run through the competition, including strong attacking performances, the team narrowly missed out with a 1–0 result against Liverpool in a closely fought game. Reaching a national final is a fantastic achievement, and an important milestone for the district. A great experience for both players and something to be proud of.
Dr. Smith
We remember Dr Leslie Smith, who sadly passed away over the Easter holidays.
Dr Smith joined Maidstone Grammar School in 1979, serving for 28 years as a chemistry teacher and Head of Chemistry. Educated at University College London, he brought deep subject knowledge, academic rigour and high expectations to generations of MGS students.
Closely connected to his classroom work was Les’s lifelong commitment to the Combined Cadet Force. He joined the MGS CCF Contingent in 1980, was appointed Officer Commanding Army Section in 1984, and went on to serve as Contingent Commander from 1996 until his retirement in 2017. His 37 years of service to the CCF were recognised by The Viscount De L’Isle, Lord Lieutenant of Kent, with the Lord Lieutenant’s Meritorious Service Award, honouring his outstanding dedication to young people.
When he retired from teaching in 2007, Les chose not to step away from the School. Determined to continue his service and to support both the CCF and the science department, he returned to MGS as Chemistry Technician, a role he held until 2013. His experience and insight proved invaluable to colleagues still working at the front of the classroom.
Those who worked closely with Les remember him not only for his commitment, but for the person he was. Simon Moody, current Head of Chemistry here at MGS, described Les as one of the most considerate, kind and interesting people he had known. He spoke of Les’s generosity with his time, his willingness to help others even when his own commitments were heavy, and his instinct for seeing the positives in people and standing up for them when others had written them off. Les was widely read, deeply curious, full of ideas and conversation, and always content to support others’ choices.
A former cadet himself, Les believed profoundly in education, service and leadership. His legacy lives on in the many students, cadets and colleagues whose lives he shaped over more than three decades at MGS.
Remembering Paul
The Maidstone Grammar School community was deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Governor Paul King, who passed away at the end of May at the age of 47, following a long illness.
Paul served as a Governor of MGS from 2020 to 2024, offering his time, insight and care in support of the school. He stepped down following his illness, a decision we know was not taken lightly, as he greatly valued his role and his involvement with the school. He was also a committed parent within our community.
We thank Paul for his dedication and commitment to MGS, which made a meaningful difference to the life of the school. He will be remembered for his kindness, humility and the quiet impact he made.
Our thoughts are with his wife Lucy, their family, and all who knew him.
Changing of the Guard
At the end of April evening, we were pleased to welcome our Year 6 soon-to-be-Maidstonians and their families to our Year 6 Welcome Evening. The evening begins to introduce many of our traditions (some of them quirky), to our new pupils and their families. One such tradition is the hearing and singing of our school song, Gaudeamus, led by our Senior Prefect Team. The evening is a significant event in the calendar for both families and pupils, and it is also an important moment for our Senior Prefect Team as it marks the formal changeover of responsibility.
This change of guard is symbolised by the ringing of the school bell (the only time pupils are permitted to do so), by the School Captain and Vice School Captain. This year, Alan B (Year 13, Corpus Christi) and Kiera C (Year 13, College), rang the bell with real enthusiasm! From the moment the bell stopped
ringing, their tenure, along with that of their prefect team, came to an end and the incoming team stepped into position. We now welcome Ethan W (Year 12, Corpus Christi) and Fintan A (Year 12, College) as our new School Captain and Vice School Captain, together with their prefect team. Thank you to Alan, Kiera and their prefect team for their outstanding leadership, service and commitment over the past year. They have made a significant impact on the school and will be greatly missed. We wish Ethan, Fintan and their prefect team every success in the year ahead and very much look forward to celebrating their achievements
500+ Fixtures
In mid June, MGS reached an important milestone, completing our 500th fixture of the academic year. This would not be possible without the dedication of our staff and the many colleagues who give their time to support fixtures, training and events throughout the year. We are also very grateful to families for their ongoing support, helping students to take full advantage of these opportunities.

Sports Awards Dinner
At the start of May our Senior Sports Awards Dinner took place at the school. This event brought together students from our senior squads to celebrate their seasons. Following nominations from their peers, a shortlist for a number of awards was shared, along with the eventual winners.
Congratulations to all the award winners on the night, and to all nominees and players for their commitment and dedication in whatever sports they have taken part in this year. The evening was a fitting celebration of the effort, teamwork and sportsmanship shown across our senior programme. Thank you also to our dedicated sport staff, who go above and beyond to provide our students with so many opportunities to participate in sport. A particular thanks to Mr Saunders for organising the event, to our caterers for their excellent food, and to Will A (Year 12, Corpus Christi) for his excellent DJing!
Our senior stars, and those in Year 13 in particular who leave us this year, have built a legacy for others to build upon. We look forward to celebrating the next generation of players, and their achievements and contributions, however great or small, at next year’s Sports Dinner.
Mr Ashenfelter Joins Team GB
Basketball has officially been part of life at MGS since 1971, when the club was founded by Mr Crafter. From those early days, when teams were just finding their feet and learning to play together, to later years of cup finals, unbeaten seasons and hard fought victories, one thing has never changed. The pride students and staff feel representing MGS on the court.
The photos here reflect that history. Alongside a shot taken by one of our students this term, you will see teams from 1994 and 2009, including Tonbridge Head of House Martin Holmes, who has always been a great champion of sport and school life at MGS.
That same sense of community is still going strong today.
We are incredibly proud that Mr John Ashenfelter has represented Team GB at the FIMBA 65+ Maxibasketball Championships in Athens this term. In June Barton House were fundraising to support him, continuing a long tradition of using sport to bring
people together.
