Tiffany Michelle Vassell Master of Science, Leadership in Nursing Education, Class of 2026

Tiffany Vassell, MS, RN is a maternal health advocate, equity leader, and nurse educator serving as Director of the Healthy Baby Healthy Child program at the Boston Public Health Commission. With nearly a decade of experience as a labor and delivery nurse, she has also worked as a substance use recovery nurse in Boston, demonstrating her deep commitment to patient-centered, community-rooted care.

A proud double alumna of the MGH Institute of Health Professions, Tiffany earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2014 and now her Master of Science in Leadership in Nursing Education. She also serves as a clinical nurse instructor at the Institute, supporting the next generation of nurses, and as a Health Equity and Leadership Fellow, working with faculty and staff to advance engagement and integrate health equity into the curriculum.

Tiffany is a passionate advocate for reproductive justice, bodily autonomy, systems and policy transformation in maternal and infant health. She is co-author of the award-winning book Preparation for a Hospital Birth, recognized by the National Black Nurses Association for advancing maternal health equity.

She is a 2025–2026 Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Fellow, continuing to deepen her leadership in quality improvement, innovation, and health equity. Tiffany serves as Vice President of the Bay State Birth Coalition and CoChair of Birth Equity & Justice Massachusetts (BEJMA), and contributes nationally through her work with her sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. She is also a proud member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

Her leadership has been widely recognized, including honors from the Boston Public Health Commission, Urban League of Massachusetts, Massachusetts Nurses Association, and Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. Above all, Tiffany is a proud mother of two, Amelia and Kash, whose lives continue to shape her commitment to equity and justice.

School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences Lauren Rae Kemmer Entry-Level Doctor of Occupational Therapy, Class of 2026

Lauren Kemmer began her professional journey with a deep commitment to the arts, pursuing a professional ballet career prior to her undergraduate studies. It was through this experience that she began volunteering for adaptive dance classes and discovered a passion for working with individuals of all abilities. Lauren graduated magna cum laude from Towson University, earning her Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Disability Studies. Her curiosity for analyzing physical function and cognitive capabilities, coupled with her love of creative connection, led her to pursue her doctorate in occupational therapy at the MGH Institute of Health Professions.

Throughout her time at the IHP, Lauren has enjoyed contributing to her academic community through leadership and service. She has served on the SHRS Dean’s Student Advisory Council and as a class representative for the Student Government Association. She is also a proud member of Pi Theta Epsilon, the scholastic honor society of the American Occupational Therapy Foundation.

Lauren discovered her love for complex-care during clinical rotations at the Mayo Clinic and Seattle Children’s Hospital and cultivated a specialized interest in neurorehabilitation as a research assistant with the Spaulding-Harvard Traumatic Brain Injury Model System. Looking ahead, Lauren desires to practice in a variety of settings throughout her career, from infant to adult care and hospital-based to community-based practice. Coming from a military family, she is especially interested in working with active duty and veteran service members. As an occupational therapist, she aims to empower her patients to participate most fully in their lives, providing them with the appropriate tools to gain independence, increase their sense of self-determination, and take control to pursue their aspirations.

PRESIDENT EMERITA Paula Milone-Nuzzo, PhD, RN, FHHC, FAAN President Emerita

Paula Milone-Nuzzo, PhD, RN, FHHC, FAAN, served as the sixth President and John Hilton Knowles Professor from 2017-2026 and was named President Emerita by the Board of Trustees upon her retirement in 2026.

Student support was a central focus of Dr Milone-Nuzzo’s presidency. During her tenure, she significantly increased the number of endowed scholarships to support students’ ability to attend the MGH Institute and built strong communication channels with students, so they had a voice in the direction of the school. A focus on student success has been a hallmark of her presidency.

Under her leadership, she built a community that supported students, faculty, staff, and the Mass General Brigham (MGB) System.

Under her leadership, the Institute was named a “Great College to Work For”. Building the community had its challenges as the COVID pandemic, financial struggles that plagued higher education, and executive orders by the Trump Administration all occurred during her tenure. Despite these challenges, President Milone-Nuzzo was instrumental in creating two Centers of Excellence: The Tedy’s Team Center of Excellence in Stroke Recovery and the Center of Excellence on Healthcare Simulation Research. She also supported the development of the Center for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Additionally, President Milone-Nuzzo worked to advance the research enterprise at the IHP with impressive results. In 2013, four years before Milone-Nuzzo’s arrival, external research funding was about $500,000. Today, it has reached over $50 million and is the fastest-growing research enterprise within the MGB system.

She has left the IHP in a strong financial position by developing new approaches to financial management and growing the student body by more than 20% with the expansion of existing programs and the addition of new programs. She accomplished that while always keeping the primary focus on academic excellence.

Another crucial part of her work was raising the Institute’s profile within the Mass General Brigham system. Building that relationship was critical for both the IHP and Mass General Brigham. It allowed Mass General Brigham to build a pipeline of new providers into their health system and let IHP capitalize on the world class health care delivery of the system, giving its students exceptional clinical experiences.

Dr. Milone-Nuzzo received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Boston College, Master of Science in Nursing in Community Health Nursing and Education from the University of Connecticut, and PhD in Higher Education Administration from the University of Connecticut. She also completed an invitational post-doctoral seminar in Gerontological Research at the Hartford Institute at the Rory Meyers College of Nursing at New York University.

Dr. Antonia Makosky, DNP, MPH, ANP-BC was an assistant professor in the School of Nursing at MGH Institute of Health Professions. She is a board-certified Adult Nurse Practitioner.

Assistant Professor Mary Riotte, MS, CCC-SLP, earned her BS in Speech Language Pathology from Loyola University and her MS from Southern Connecticut State University. She spent many years as a Senior Pediatric Speech Pathologist at Tufts Medical Center in Boston before joining the MGH Institute of Health Professions in 2004.

Dr. Makosky completed her Masters in Public Health at Boston University in 1990, and her Masters in Nursing at the IHP in 1997. Since then, she has practiced as a home care and hospice nurse, and as a Nurse Practitioner in Homeless Shelters, Internal Medicine, and Community Health Center settings. She also cared for patients at the Partners Isolation Hotel in Revere early during the pandemic.

Dr. Makosky has taught at the IHP since 2007 and enjoys precepting students at her practice at the MGH Charlestown HealthCare Center. Professional interests include equity and inclusion, global and immigrant health, as well as LGBTQIA health. Prior to NP school Dr. Makosky served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Congo DRC. Since becoming an NP Dr. Makosky has worked in several additional global health settings, for short term volunteer work as well as longer term assignments with Doctors without Borders. Dr. Makosky served as School of Nursing Representative on the Institute’s Mission, Values, and Community Excellence Council, and on the Antiracism, Equity and Inclusion Committee at the MGH Charlestown HealthCare Center.

Over the past 22 years, she has been a dedicated educator and mentor, supervising first-year Communication Sciences and Disorders graduate students in the Julie Atwood Speech Language and Literacy Center (SLLC) while developing and teaching a wide range of courses centered on clinical teaching.

Her contributions also include research focused on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and key administrative roles, including serving as past Director of the SLLC.

COMMENCEMENT AWARDS THE EMERGING LEADER ALUMNI AWARD The Emerging Leader Alumni Award, established in 2010, recognizes the accomplishments of an individual who demonstrates outstanding leadership in the health professions and the drive to develop innovative, effective, and responsible health care practices.

The award is open to all alumni who have graduated with their first professional degree from any Institute academic program within the past ten years. It goes to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and made significant contributions to his/her professional disciplines and/or health care in one or more of the following ways:  Implementing innovative models or programs that contribute to advancing the health professions and have the potential to change the health care landscape.  Committing to and promoting ethical health care practices in the local and/or global community.  Using their leadership role and skills to advocate for change and advancement while continuing to provide the highest quality of health care.

The 2026 recipient is

Loren Fields McMahon Doctor of Occupational Therapy, Class of 2017 Loren Fields McMahon, OTD, OTR/L, ATP, is an occupational therapist, assistive technology professional, educator, and innovator whose career has been dedicated to helping individuals with complex physical and communication needs access the world more fully. At Boston Children’s Hospital’s Augmentative Communication Program, she specializes in alternative access, augmentative and alternative communication, seating and positioning, computer access, mounting, and environmental controls for both children and adults. Her work is grounded in a deeply client-centered approach, ensuring that technology is thoughtfully matched to each individual’s strengths, goals, and daily life.

Dr. McMahon earned her Doctor of Occupational Therapy from the MGH Institute of Health Professions as a student in the inaugural OTD cohort, where her early work included collaboration with MIT’s Open Style Lab. Since then, she has built a dynamic career that blends clinical excellence, creativity, teaching, and scholarship. She has developed innovative programs, including an adaptive gaming initiative that has become one of the nation’s most active pediatric adaptive gaming programs, and she has shared her expertise through research, publications, and presentations at regional, national, and international levels.

As a doctoral student mentor and educator across several Boston universities, Loren is equally passionate about shaping the future of the profession. Her work reflects not only professional achievement, but also a lasting commitment to inclusion, possibility, and meaningful participation through technology.

COMMENCEMENT AWARDS CONTINUED THE BETTE ANN HARRIS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD In 2005 and in recognition of the Twenty-fifth Commencement Ceremony, the Institute established the Distinguished Alumni Award to be conferred annually at Commencement. It is the highest form of recognition bestowed upon an alumna or alumnus of the MGH Institute of Health Professions. It is given to a graduate who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, achievement, and service in advancing health care through the professions and in support of the mission of the MGH Institute in one or more of the following ways:  Expanding and refining the scientific basis for clinical practice through research and scholarship.  Contributing to new models of practice to foster provision of effective, affordable, and ethical health care.  Contributing significantly to advancing the mission, reputation, and standards of the MGH Institute.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is named in honor of Bette Ann Harris, the first degree recipient of the Institute, and Professor Emerita.

The 2026 recipient is

Michelle E. Collie, PT, DPT, MS, OCS Master of Science in Physical Therapy and Doctor of Physical Therapy, Class of 2005 Michelle Collie earned her Bachelor of Physiotherapy from Otago University, New Zealand in 1994 before finding her way to Rhode Island, where she worked as a physical therapist and supervisor at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island. She earned her Post-Professional Master of Science in Orthopedics and Doctor of Physical Therapy from the MGH Institute of Health Professions in 2005 and holds board certification as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist.

That clinical foundation shaped everything that came next. In 2001, she joined Performance Physical Therapy, one clinic, one vision: physical therapists as primary providers for musculoskeletal care. In 2023, the organization rebranded to Highbar Physical Therapy to reflect its purpose. Practices including Peak Physical Therapy and Sports Performance, Joint Ventures Physical Therapy, and Physical Therapy U, each founded by physical therapists, joined because they saw a better future together. Today, Highbar spans 55 locations and 550 employees across New England: built by physical therapists, for physical therapists.

Highbar operates as a teaching practice where students, early-career clinicians, and seasoned practitioners grow alongside one another, because the best outcomes begin with physical therapists who are supported, challenged, and equipped to practice at the top of their license.

As CEO, she has served as President of APTA Rhode Island, Treasurer of the APTA Private Practice Section, chaired the national PR and Marketing Committee, and served on the APTA-PP National Covid Task Force — recognized with APTA-PP Board Service Awards in 2019 and 2021, and the Jane L. Snyder Practice of the Year Award in 2014.

HISTORY MGH Institute of Health Professions was founded to address the need for master clinicians - leaders in the healthcare professions molded by the integration of theory and clinical practice in an interprofessional environment.

In 1873, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) established one of the first schools of nursing- the Boston Training School for Nurses- based on the principles of Florence Nightingale, which became the Massachusetts General Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1896, and later, the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing. By the time this diploma school closed in 1981, it was the oldest continuously operating school of nursing in the United States and was the predecessor to the MGH Institute's School of Nursing.

Since many healthcare professions evolved from hospital-based needs, the MGH Institute’s educational programs initially developed through on-site clinical training activities. The shift from hospital-based to college and university-based education for health sciences raised several issues, including lack of integration between clinical and didactic aspects of healthcare curriculum.

The Early Years In 1964, Ruth Sleeper, Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing from 1946 to 1966, recognized the implications of these changes in nursing education and promoted the idea of a free-standing, degree-granting institution affiliated with the hospital.

In the late 1960s, hospital General Director Dr. John Hilton Knowles expanded the idea to include all non-physician education programs for health care professionals and proposed establishing an “MGH University” which would offer hospital-based, advanced level training programs.

In the early 1970s, Dr. Charles A. Sanders, Dr. Knowles’ successor, along with Dr. Henry Mankin, Chair of the MGH Committee on Teaching and Education, and John E. Lawrence, Chair of the MGH Board of Trustees, pursued the idea of creating an affiliated graduate degree school.

In 1975, a petition to grant degrees was submitted to the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education. A public hearing was held, at which local colleges and universities voiced opposition to establishing a free-standing school governed by the hospital. But in 1977, MGH was awarded degree-granting authority by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The first Provost (school leader), as well as program directors in dietetics, nursing, physical therapy, and social work, were hired.

In 1980, MGH Institute of Health Professions officially opened, admitting its first master's students in physical therapy and social work. The Institute held classes in Ruth Sleeper Hall in the basement of Mass General, and the Institute held its first graduation, awarding four certificates in social work.

In 1983, the first degree, a Master of Science in Physical Therapy, was awarded, and a new Master of Speech-Language Pathology program began.

In 1985, the MGH Institute was incorporated with an independent Board of Trustees, hired its first President, and received initial accreditation from the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). (The accrediting commission changed to the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) in 2018.)

Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, the MGH Institute continued to grow and change. A faculty award for excellence in teaching was established and later named in honor of Nancy T. Watts, Professor Emerita, a nationally prominent physical therapist and educator who was instrumental in the Institute’s founding. The nursing program achieved specialized accreditation, the social work program closed, and students enrolled in the speech-language pathology program which was renamed Communication Sciences and Disorders. The Institute also moved from Massachusetts General Hospital into 101 Merrimac Street near North Station– the first time faculty, staff and students were together under one roof.

By 1994, when Partners HealthCare was formed by the Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the MGH Institute’s enrollment had reached 500 students. The following year, the entry-level Master of Physical Therapy program began, the dietetics program closed, and the nursing program revised its curriculum to prepare nurse practitioners.

In 1996, the speech-language pathology program was awarded teacher certification by the Massachusetts Department of Education.

Permanent Campus in the 21st Century 2000: The Institute purchased Building 36, a former joiners building in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Named the Catherine Filene Shouse Building, after the generous support from the Shouse Foundation, it was renovated into a state-of-the-art educational facility that opened in December 2001.

2001: The entry-level Master of Science in Physical Therapy degree was converted into a Doctor of Physical Therapy 2004: First students are enrolled in the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Medical Imaging.

2005: The first Distinguished Alumni Award was presented at the 25th Commencement, while alumnae from the MGH Nurse's Alumnae Association began a yearly tradition of carrying the flag of the Massachusetts General Hospital nursing school to symbolize the historical link between it and the MGH Institute's School of Nursing.

2007: Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs are launched.

The Institute held its first annual Gala to generate additional scholarship funds to support students attending the school. That same year, Janis P. Bellack, PhD, RN, FAAN, was named the Institute's fifth president. Under her leadership, the school began an unprecedented growth in programs, students, and facilities that continues to this day.

Expansion and Growth 2008: The Institute expanded from one to three buildings as enrollment reached 900 students. Alex F. Johnson, PhD, CCC-SLP, became the school's first Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

2009: Graduate programs in nursing were designated as a new School of Nursing to better reflect the size and scope of its academic offerings. The speech-language pathology, physical therapy, and medical imaging programs were reorganized under the umbrella of a new School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and the clinical investigation program closed.

2011: The New England Association of Schools and Colleges re-accredited the Institute for another 10 years. The Center for Interprofessional Studies and Innovation was created to foster entrepreneurial activity, innovation, and collaboration between faculty and students in the Institute’s academic disciplines. Enrollment exceeded 1,100 for the first time, while the number of alumni passed the 4,000 mark.

2012: The Institute expanded into a fourth building adjacent to the U.S.S. constitution, better known as Old Ironsides. The School of Nursing added a second admission cycle to the BSN program to meet rising demand, while the first cohort of students enrolled in a new PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences program. The school also began a Master of Science in Health Professions Education program, and the medical imaging program closed.

2014: First students are enrolled in New England's first entry-level Doctor of Occupational Therapy program, while the School of Nursing programs and the Doctor of Physical Therapy program were each re-accredited for another 10 years. The school added 14,000 square feet - creating a new Center for Health & Rehabilitation Research to accommodate faculty researchers leading the Institute's growing focus on research, with research funding surpassing $2 million for the first time in its history.

2015: The Institute expanded into its seventh building, creating a new Library and Study Commons, thereby increasing its footprint to nearly 140,000 square feet - almost triple the amount of campus space since 2007. Research funding grew to $4 million, while the first students enrolled in a new Master of Physician Assistant Studies program. In spring 2015, enrollment surpassed 1,500 students.

2017: The school celebrated its 40th anniversary and Paula Milone-Nuzzo, PhD, RN, FHHC, FAAN, became the MGH Institute's sixth president. The Doctor of Occupational Therapy and Master of Physician Assistant Studies programs graduated their first cohorts of students. The IHP also launched its innovative IMPACT Practice Center, a 15,000-square-foot educational facility that now houses the school's five client-care centers providing more than 10,000 hours of pro-bono patient care.

2018: IHP launched the Center for Climate Change, Climate Justice, and Health, the first nurse-led initiative to combat the effects of global warming. Enrollment reached the 1,600-student mark.

2019: The school launches three new degrees: a PhD in Health Professions Education, a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling, and a post-professional Doctor of Occupational Therapy. The school created a new Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and hired its first director. A student was chosen to deliver the keynote address at Commencement for the first time in school’s 42-year history.

Changing Times March 2020: The IHP shifted to a fully remote operation in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Classroom and hands-on education pivoted to virtual platforms during the largest health crisis in a century. A series of innovations allowed most students to graduate on time, while the 40th Commencement ceremony was moved from May to August and changed to a virtual event to accommodate shifting health restrictions.

2021: The IHP community returned to campus albeit with masks and other safeguards, as the COVID-19 pandemic began to subside although Commencement again was held virtually. The school launched New England’s first clinical Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology program, and the total grant portfolio passed the $25 million mark for the first time in its history.

2022: Commencement was held in person for the first time in three years. A record 612 graduates included the first to complete the PhD in Health Professions Education and post-professional Doctor of Occupational Therapy programs and pushed the number of alumni to over 10,000. The School of Healthcare Leadership was created, with new master’s degrees in Data Analytics and Health Administration launched. The Tedy’s Team Foundation, started by former New England Patriot great Tedy Bruschi and his wife, Heidi, donated $1 million to create the Tedy’s Team Center of Excellence in Stroke Recovery.

2023: The Institute’s total value of active grants jumped to a school-record $44.6 million, fueled in part by several grants from the National Institutes of Health, $5.9 million from the U.S. Department of Labor to help expand nursing pipelines, and $1 million from Massachusetts to train complex care nurses. The Tedy’s Team Center of Excellence in Stroke Recovery and the Center for Interprofessional Education and Practice were launched, while the inaugural school ombudsmen and dean of Interprofessional Education and Practice were named.

2024: The Institute reached its highest student enrollment ever, 1698 students. The IHP launched the Center of Excellence on Healthcare Simulation Research, and opened the doors to a 35,000-square-foot research space at 1 CW. The decade-old Entry Level Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program was reaccredited for another 10 years while the Master of Science in Nursing’s Class of 2025 cohort - all 87 students – passed the NCLEX on the first try – a 100% pass rate for the first time in School history.

2025: The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences added the Department of Health Sciences, Doctor of Health Science (DHSc) Degree, and the new undergraduate degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences. Columbia University’s Maura Abbott became dean of the MGH Institute’s School of Nursing, replacing Ken White, who retired. The MGH Institute’s research arm eclipsed the $50 million mark in active grants. President Paula Milone-Nuzzo announced her retirement after nearly nine years. The Institute began admission pathway partnerships with Bridgewater State University, Suffolk University, St. Michael’s College, and Bryant University. The Master’s in Healthcare Data Analytics (MSDA) launched a similar agreement with American University of the Caribbean (AUC) School of Medicine Sint Maarten.

2026: Enrollment reached its highest level in the MGH Institute’s history — more than 1,900 students. The University of Texas Medical Branch’s Deborah Jones succeeded Paula Milone-Nuzzo as president began her role on January 18th. Every student in the 2025 Physician Assistant program passed the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE) on their first try. The Instituted added The Citadel - The Military College of South Carolina, the University of New Hampshire, and Merrimack College to its Admissions Partnership Program. Three Martha’s Vineyard Hospital employees received nursing degrees through a first-of-its-kind ABSN pilot program with the Institute.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

Academic regalia is a unique academic custom that began in the Middle Ages when scholars at European universities wore hoods and gowns as their customary daily attire. The distinctive gowns, caps, and hoods were designed to represent various trades and professions and to reflect the distinct levels of education. Bachelor of Arts were apprentices; Master of Arts were teachers; and Doctors were teachers who had completed post-graduate studies. The regalia worn in academic ceremonies in modern-day America is derived primarily from the gowns worn at Oxford University.

The Master’s gowns are set apart by pleated front panels and an oblong sleeve that falls below the knee. The sleeve is squared at the end into which a semi-circle is cut. The Doctor’s gowns are more elaborate with velvet panels down the front and around the neck with three velvet stripes running across the bell-shaped sleeves. The variety of styles and colors seen in the procession reflects a university’s own distinguishing custom for its doctoral robes. Other symbolic characteristics are sometimes worn on the gown, such as ribbons or cords, to symbolize honors such as Phi Beta Kappa.

All levels of degree candidates and recipients wear square mortarboard caps. Doctors sometimes wear soft, beret-style cap. The tassels worn on both mortarboards and berets are sometimes color-coded by the major field of learning but may be black for any degree. The gold-metallic-thread tassel is reserved for doctors and/or the governing officials of institutions. Candidates for graduation wear the tassel on the right side, changing it to the left side after the degree is conferred.

The most distinctive characteristics in academic regalia are found on the hood, an ornamental and symbolic article draped over the shoulders and back which connotes the level of degree, the field of study, and the degree- granting institution. The size of the hood and width of velvet trimming conveys level of degree.

The silk lining of the hood denotes the colors of the institution granting the highest degree earned by that individual.

THE HOODING OF GRADUATES The hooding of graduates is one of the most meaningful and symbolic moments of Commencement, representing the culmination of years of study and the formal recognition of entry into a profession. Beginning with the 2026 Commencement Ceremony, we are proud to introduce an enhanced hooding tradition designed to elevate this milestone for our graduates and their guests.

This updated approach reflects thoughtful collaboration across our community and aligns with national best practices. It has been carefully designed to ensure that each graduate’s achievement is honored in a way that is both visible and memorable, while also preserving the dignity and flow of the ceremony.

Doctoral candidates in the PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences and PhD in Health Professions Education programs will be individually hooded on stage by faculty mentors, highlighting the deep scholarly relationships that define their academic journey.

Candidates in Clinical Doctoral and Master’s programs will participate in a coordinated group hooding, a powerful expression of the shared experience that defines the health professions.

While hooding traditionally symbolizes individual accomplishment, it also reflects a fundamental truth of professional practice: that success is built through collaboration, mentorship, and community. The group hooding experience honors these connections, recognizing that our graduates move forward not only as individuals, but as members of a collective dedicated to service and care.

During this moment in the ceremony, faculty are invited to stand in recognition of their essential role in guiding, supporting, and bearing witness to this important transition.

Dear Class of 2026, My name is Mary Larkin, and I am a proud 1976 graduate of the MGH School of Nursing. I am currently the President of the MGH SON Nurses’ Alumni Association. On behalf of the Association, I am honored to be sending Congratulations and Best Wishes to all of you today. The MGH School graduated 7,943 nurses before closing in 1981. In preparation for our 150th Anniversary Celebration in 2023, we conducted extensive research into the history of nursing at MGH. We continue to discover stories of amazing work done by our graduates and are in awe of their contributions to nursing practice and education over the years.

I would like to share a quote from Sally Johnson, Director of the school of nursing from 1920-1946. When asked about the success of the school and its graduates she said “ we put nursing in their souls”. She was a skilled and inspiring speaker in addition to being a legendary nurse leader and went on to say “It would need the soul of a poet with the tongue of an orator to express in words the extent and depth of the influence which the school has had upon the lives of her graduates… she has given a large majority of her graduates a self-reliance, a resourcefulness, a sympathy, a charity, and an understanding of life, which few possess”.

The leadership of the MGH SON was instrumental in establishing the MGH IHP SON. Ruth Sleeper, Director of the school from 1946-1966, would be happy and proud to acknowledge all of you as well-prepared graduate nurses, ready to meet the demands of the future. I would like to extend a special congratulations to those of you who have been recipients of our Association’s various awards. We have been pleased to present these awards over many years to students who represent the values and attributes of those for whom the awards are named.

The Massachusetts General Hospital is an international leader in health care. Nurses from the MGH diploma school and now the MGH IHP SON are making a difference all over the world. They continue to be role models for future nurses. As you become a proud graduate of the MGH IHP SON you take your place in a long history of excellence and stand on the shoulders of both MGH SON Nurses and MGH IHP SON Nurses who have come before you.
