Cardiac Care Close to Home: Mason Clinic’s Cardiology Team Keeps Our Community Strong

F

inding the right cardiologist is about more than convenience. It comes down to trust and care during a sometimes challenging experience.

When Lola Smith completed her treatment for breast cancer — six rounds of chemotherapy followed by 20 rounds of daily radiation treatment — she tried looking for a cardiologist near her home in Olympia.

Cancer treatment can put undue stress on the heart, making cardiology care essential for former cancer patients. When Smith could not find a cardiologist right away, her daughter, Renee Kapa, a Clinic Supervisor at Mason Clinic, recommended a visit to Shelton. Smith began seeing Fahad Younas, MD, and fell in love with Mason Clinic.

“I will never go anywhere else,” Smith said. “The experience was wonderful. Dr. Younas is just awesome. He really took his time and cared about what I had to say. He was not in any hurry and he answered all of my questions. It felt like a very personal experience.”

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming one life every 34 seconds. According to the American Heart Association, nearly half of U.S. adults have some form of cardiovascular disease, and many do not know it. Risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and smoking often go unchecked until a crisis occurs.

Preventive care — including regular screenings, stress tests, and echocardiograms — can dramatically reduce these risks. Studies show that maintaining ideal cardiovascular health lowers the likelihood of stroke, dementia, kidney disease, and even certain cancers.

For patients undergoing treatments like chemotherapy, cardiology oversight is critical to prevent long-term heart damage.

Mason Clinic’s Cardiology team combines world-class training with a community-first mindset:

• Rodney Badger, MD – A graduate of UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Badger completed his fellowship at the University of Washington. His expertise spans preventive cardiology, heart failure management, and advanced diagnostic testing. Patients appreciate his thorough, evidence-based approach and calm demeanor.

• Fahad Younas, MD – Joining Mason Health in early 2024, Dr. Younas brings experience from Columbia University’s cardiac surgery research program and clinical training at Shifa College of Medicine. His focus includes arrhythmia care, hypertension management, and stress testing, with a passion for educating patients about lifestyle-driven heart health.

• Haroon Yousaf, MD – With over a decade of interventional cardiology experience from Johns Hopkins and the University of Southern California, Dr. Yousaf specializes in complex cardiac conditions and preventive care. His reputation for compassionate, personalized care shines through in stories like Lola’s and Renee’s.

• Sarah Oliveira, ARNP, DNP – Dr. Oliveira is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner specializing in Cardiology. She completed her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in 2023 at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and has worked throughout the country as a registered nurse and ARNP in Cardiology, Oncology and Supportive/Geriatric Care.

The Cardiology team’s newest addition, Dr. Oliveira, had an untraditional path into cardiology — she started as a pharmacy technician, became an Army medic and later worked in home health across rural communities in Virginia.

“My experiences taught me that the most meaningful care happens when you slow down, build trust, and truly listen,” Dr. Oliveira said.

“Building relationships with patients is my guiding principle. “

“That’s why preventive cardiology means so much to me. When a patient finally understands their condition and feels empowered to take control of their health — that moment of clarity is everything. Bringing that kind of personalized, relationship -based care to a smaller community like Mason County feels incredibly rewarding.”

Kapa works closely with Mason Clinic’s Cardiology team and continues to be impressed with their level of care and dedication to patients, sometimes both on and off the clock.

In late fall, Kapa’s father suffered a heart attack and was initially treated at hospitals in Olympia and then Seattle. During this incredibly stressful time, Dr. Yousaf went above and beyond.

“Dr. Yousaf sat me down and explained what was happening, ensuring our family understood each step of the process,” Kapa said.

“What

truly stood out was his compassion and dedication — Dr. Yousaf even came to the hospital during his personal time to check on my father and our family. It was clear that he genuinely cared, not only about my dad’s medical outcome, but about us as people.”

Because of the exceptional care, communication, and empathy Dr. Yousaf showed, Kapa’s family has complete trust in him.

“We will all be receiving our cardiology care at Mason Clinic going forward,” Kapa said. “We are incredibly grateful to have such knowledgeable, compassionate physicians in our community.”

Smith is cancer-free and plans to go back to see Mason Clinic’s Cardiology team in a year.

“I would never go to anyone else,” she said. “I feel comfortable there

District’s Birth Center wins excellence in health care award!

The Birth Center at Mason General Hospital was recognized last year as a 5-Star Award Winner in inpatient OB/GYN services for scoring in the top 10 percent nationally in Overall Hospital Rating by PRC, a leader in the healthcare intelligence space.

The Excellence in Healthcare Awards recognize organizations and individuals who achieve excellence throughout the year by improving patient experiences, healthcare employee engagement, and/or physician alignment and engagement based on surveys of patients.

“It is an honor to recognize Mason Health with this Excellence in Healthcare Award for the Birth Center’s deserving work,” said Joe M. Inguanzo, Ph.D., President and CEO of PRC. “It takes true dedication and determination to achieve this level of excellence in healthcare and Mason Health has shown their commitment to making Mason General Hospital a better place to work, a better place to practice medicine, and a better place for patients to be treated.”

Mason Health’s Birth Center at Mason General Hospital had more than 1,400 visits in 2024, helping 354 babies come into the world. In 2024 and 2025 the department prioritized prenatal care through new programs like the Blue Band Initiative for preeclampsia awareness and TeamBirth, a collaborative process which bolstered the autonomy and decision-making ability of persons giving birth in Washington state. TeamBirth was launched in partnership with the Washington State Hospital Association.

“It is an incredible honor to receive this distinction among other Birth Centers across the nation, mostly because it means our patients feel heard and well cared for,” said Birth Center Director Kris Gaa.

“We want all of our birthing families to know their safety and birth experiences are our top priorities. The nurses in the Birth Center are there because they love supporting families through one of the most intimate and meaningful periods in their lives.”

Construction update: Cafeteria opens and rebrands as Mountain View Café

Mason Health re-opened its cafeteria on Monday, Feb. 9, with a new look and layout to better accommodate patients, visitors and workforce members. Featured artwork includes a landscape of the Olympic Mountains from local muralist BriAnne Waite and minimalist food photography from artist Jennifer Rutledge

The new Mountain View Café provides affordable, fresh meals that promote healthier eating habits and contribute to the overall well-being of the community. Additionally, the café honors favorites like delicious baked goods, clam chowder, and prime rib dinner.

“We decided to transition from ‘Bistro in the Basement’ to ‘Mountain View Café’ to better connect our name with the stunning Pacific Northwest environment surrounding Mason General Hospital,” said Ashlee Johnson, Culinary & Nutrition Services Manager. “The artwork in the café walls beautifully showcases the four seasons of harvests this region.”

District welcomes new commissioner Pamela Schlauderaff

Mason Health is pleased to announce Pamela Schlauderaff, RN, MHA, as hospital commissioner. A fifth- generation resident of the Skokomish Valley, Schlauderaff brings decades of experience in nursing, clinic leadership, quality improvement, and public health to the Board.

“What I am most looking forward to is serving the patients and workforce here at Mason Health,” Schlauderaff said. “My journey has been all about improving quality and access to health care, and I believe that that will be an asset on the board.”

Working at her family farm, Hunter Farms in Union, Schlauderaff credits a strong multi- generational influence, including two grandmothers who were educators, for encouraging her path into nursing. She earned her degree from Seattle University and became a registered nurse at 21. Early in her career, she practiced in Seattle across obstetrics and medical-surgical settings and served at a United Nations refugee camp in Thailand.

In 1985, Schlauderaff returned home to Mason County and co -founded a medical practice in Shelton, Olympic Physicians, with her husband, Mark Schlauderaff, MD. Olympic Physicians transitioned into a Rural Health Clinic in 1999. That same year marked the beginning of an intensive quality improvement journey in partnership with the Washington State Department of Health, Kaiser Permanente, and Mason General Hospital.

The Schlauderaffs achieved statewide recognition for improvements in diabetes care, preventive screenings, and healthcare access, with outcomes published by the University of Washington and highlighted by Medicare Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Department of Health.

Under her leadership, the clinic expanded from one to 12 providers across four buildings, and in 2013 the practice joined Mason Health, then known as Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics.

Schlauderaff later earned a master’s of business management degree with a focus on healthcare from Troy University and continued advancing quality initiatives in areas including patient- centered medical home models, hypertension, cancer screening, and access improvement. Schlauderaff worked consistently on her career development and retired from Mason Health in December 2023 as Director of Quality, Patient Safety, and Regulatory Compliance.

“Pamela’s depth of clinical expertise, operational leadership, and commitment to quality and staff engagement will be a tremendous asset as we continue serving our community,” said Hospital Commissioner and Board President Don Welander

Mason Health, with The Rural Collaborative, kicks off year two of breast cancer screening campaign

Member hospitals of the Rural Collaborative launched the second year of their Breast Cancer Screening Campaign with renewed enthusiasm and a shared goal: to ensure more women in rural Washington receive life-saving breast cancer screenings.

After surpassing last year’s target of a 56 percent overall screening rate, members set their sights even higher for 2025 — aiming to reach 60 percent participation across the network.

Member hospitals are embracing creative solutions to reach women in their communities — last year, Mason Health re-launched for the first time post-COVID-pandemic, a free Women’s Health event in September, in partnership with the Karen Hilburn Cancer Fund. Through outreach efforts, Mason Health provided free mammograms and cancer screening services to 14 women in September.

“Mason Health is deeply committed to empowering the women in our community through regular breast cancer screening,” said Chief Medical Officer Darren Cuevas. “Together with the Rural Collaborative, we are working to raise awareness, break down barriers, and ensure every woman understands the lifesaving impact of mammography. We are grateful for this partnership as we strive to reach and support as many women in Mason County as possible.”

The Collaborative will celebrate their accomplishments at a recognition event in March 2026.

The Collaborative is a network of independent rural health systems in Washington state. Members exchange ideas, share best practices, and support one another to deliver high-quality care in challenging environments.

District awarded designation as Center of Excellence in Lung Cancer

Screening

Mason Health has been named a Center of Excellence (COE) by GO2 for Lung Cancer (GO2) for its ongoing commitment to providing the Mason County community with patient-centered, evidence-based lung cancer screening.

An estimated 237,000 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer annually, with most being found at an advanced stage of the disease. As a result, lung cancer has long been the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.

By screening individuals at high risk for lung cancer using low dose computed tomography (LDCT), this disease can now be found early, when it is most treatable and even curable.

“It is hard to overstate the importance of conducting lung cancer screenings for our community,” said Mason Health Chief Operating Officer Winfried Danke.

“Early detection of cancer literally saves lives. We are thrilled to not only offer this service in our community, but to have been recognized as a Center of Excellence so soon after starting up this program earlier last year.”

GO2 COEs designated in lung cancer screening are committed to the principles of patientcentered communication and decision making across the entire care pathway. They implement screening in accordance with current evidence and clinical guidelines developed by professional bodies such as the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), and they coordinate patient follow-up, diagnostics, and transition to treatment through a multidisciplinary clinical process.

“Mason Health is dedicated to providing patients with the highest quality care,” said Mason Health Director of Population Health Jennifer Kummerfeldt, ARNP.

“Low dose CT screening is currently the only proven method to detect lung cancer at the earliest, most treatable stage. We are thrilled to be part of this elite group, setting an example for responsible screening practices across the country.”

As part of a District-wide initiative to increase cancer screenings this year, Mason Health strengthened its lung cancer screening efforts

with the addition of a dedicated lung cancer patient navigator, Elyse Dumont, RN. An experienced Registered Nurse devotes an additional four hours weekly to guide patients through the screening process, ensuring comprehensive support and coordination of care.

The program targets individuals at higher risk, including:

• Current smokers or those who have quit smoking in the past 15 years

• Those with a consistent smoking history equal to one pack a day for 20 years or more

• Anyone with an inconsistent smoking history that equals one pack per day for 20 years or more

• Age 50-80 years old (insurance coverage can vary for the full age range)

Schedule an appointment with your Primary Care provider at Mason Clinic at 360 426 2653 to learn more about your lung cancer risk.

“Nunca acudiré a ningún otro sitio”, dijo Smith. Él no tenía ninguna prisa y respondió a todas mis preguntas.

• Rodney Badger, MD.

• Sarah Oliveira, ARNP, DNP.
