Care for the Community: Mason General Hospital Foundation unveils new name; funds open MRI and new car seat program

M

ason General Hospital Foundation, established in 1991, is known for its dedication to enhancing the health and wellness of Mason County patients, residents and visitors. The Foundation has entered an exciting new chapter with the unveiling of a new name and brand identity as Mason Health Foundation. This past fall, Mason Health Foundation engaged with strategic partners and with community and supporters at fundraising events to fund new equipment for the District and its patients.

During the Black & White Ball Dinner Auction on Saturday, Nov. 16, Mason Health CEO Eric Moll, announced the Foundation’s rebrand as Mason Health Foundation; which aligns the nonprofit even more closely with Mason Health’s Mission, Vision and Values and follows the Hospital District’s rebrand in 2019.

“This name change represents the next evolution of the Foundation and reinforces our commitment to serve as prudent stewards of our resources, ensuring they have the maximum impact in our community,” said Jennifer Capps, Chief Development & Communication Officer for Mason Health and Mason Health Foundation.

Mason Health Foundation’s new name and initiatives reflect a dedication to the community that goes beyond health care, ensuring that every resident has access to the tools and resources they need to thrive and achieve their best health.

A State-of-the-Art Open MRI

One of the Foundation’s most ambitious efforts is an ongoing fundraising campaign to purchase a high-field open MRI, set to replace the current open MRI that has served the community since 2013. Patients have traveled far and wide for the comfort of Mason Health’s current MRI.

“We knew we had something special with our current open MRI because patients come from as far as two to three hours away to experience its improved accessibility,” said Shane Faford, Director of Diagnostic Imaging.

“The new MRI will provide us with the best of both worlds —state-of-the-art technology combined with the patient-friendly, open design people appreciate,” he said.

Construction is already underway, with plans to complete the installation by the end of 2025.

Funding for the project was bolstered by a $200,000 donation from the Foundation’s Endowment Fund, as well as generous contributions from the community, including $96,000 from a Grateful Patient donation and $18,000 from Our Community Credit Union.

“The Foundation’s support has been incredible,” Faford said. “From funding a new 3-D mammography machine in 2018 and the surgical C-arm unit in 2019 to the fluoroscopy x-ray imaging unit in 2022 and

this MRI, they’ve raised millions of dollars to ensure we have the tools we need to provide exceptional care.”

Supporting Patients’ Basic Needs

Other new initiatives reflect the Foundation’s commitment to addressing the needs of Mason County families — this year, the Foundation launched a car seat program (see cover).

“It is heartwarming to see our community rally together to help patients in such a tangible way,” Capps said.

This year, the Foundation’s Endowment Fund is supporting another necessity for Mason Health’s youngest patients — a car seat program to help educate new parents about how to use car seats. Parents in need may also qualify for a new car seat.

The program initially was set to launch in 2020, prior to the pandemic. Board members re-launched the program this year.

“We heard from Mason Health’s Birth Center about parents who didn’t have car seats or didn’t know how to use them safely,” said Lisa Welander, Foundation Board Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair. “The Birth Center now has car seats available to train parents, ensuring their babies are safe and secure.”

The car seat program is funded through a restricted fund for pediatric patients within the Foundation’s Endowment Fund. The Endowment Fund allocated $2,000 toward the program and it is expected to continue in perpetuity.

Over the years the Endowment Fund has supported Mason Health with the purchase of new medical equipment at Mason General

Hospital and pediatric equipment at the Rehabilitation Services Department.

With an Endowment Fund valued at more than $2 million and total Foundation assets of $3.4 million, the organization is poised to make a lasting impact, said Beth Gregg, longtime chair of the Foundation’s Endowment Committee.

“The services that Mason Health provides to patients is outstanding,” Gregg said. “On behalf of Mason Health Foundation and the Endowment Committee, we will strive to strengthen and support Mason Health’s efforts for years to come.”

New leadership at the helm of Mason Clinic — Chief Operating Officer Winfried Danke and Director of Clinical Operations Kelly North

At the end of 2024, Mason Health experienced two significant leadership changes that signal the District’s continued commitment to excellence and patient-centered care. Winfried Danke joined as Chief Operating Officer in December, while Kelly North stepped into the role of Director of Clinic Operations, previously having served as Clinic Manager over Primary Care and the Walk-In Clinic. Both leaders bring decades of experience and a shared dedication to enhancing the health care experience for patients and staff alike. Former Chief Operating Officer Mark Batty and Director of Clinic Operations Michele Tierney both retired at the end of 2024.

Winfried Danke: A Visionary Chief Operating Officer

Danke began his role as Mason Health’s COO on December 16, 2024, overseeing clinic operations at Mason Clinic and ancillary services at Mason General Hospital. Known for his collaborative leadership style and a passion for process improvement, Danke brings a wealth of experience in healthcare strategy, community development, and operational excellence.

“Mason Health is an anchor in the community,” said Danke. “I’m passionate about creating systems that hardwire excellence and improve care delivery. This is where I can have the biggest impact.”

Born and raised in Germany’s Black Forest region, Danke’s journey has taken him from international development roles to domestic healthcare leadership. He served as Executive Director of the Prosthetics Outreach Foundation, based in Seattle, and CHOICE Regional Health Network, where he led impactful initiatives bringing health insurance to uninsured and underinsured individuals through the new Washington Health Benefit Exchange.

Danke’s tenure at CHOICE also included the development of the Cascade Pacific Action Alliance, an Accountable Community of Health that brought together health and social service providers across seven counties. Locally, this work helped Mason Health establish its patient financial advocate program, now a cornerstone of the District’s community support efforts.

Before joining Mason Health, Danke served as COO at Summit Pacific Medical Center, where he significantly improved patient access and operational efficiency.

His experience in fostering collaboration and building systems to sustain excellence aligns seamlessly with Mason Health’s culture.

“Winfried brings a highly approachable and collaborative leadership style that aligns well with our culture at Mason Health,” said CEO Eric Moll.

“His experience in improving population health through coalition building will undoubtedly benefit our team and community.”

Kelly North: Driving Operational Excellence in Clinic Operations

North, a dedicated Mason Health team member since 2019, was promoted to Director of Clinic Operations in November. In this role, North oversees all Mason Clinic operations, including Mason Clinic-Hoodsport, bringing her extensive experience in health care management to the forefront.

“This is a career path I’ve been working toward for years,” North shared. “Mason Health has been wonderful to work for, and I’m thrilled to continue making a difference within the clinic system, improving processes, and supporting our incredible teams.”

North’s health care career spans more than three decades, with leadership roles at Western Washington Medical Group and Olympic Medical Physicians.

Since joining Mason Health, she was instrumental in integrating primary care clinics into the Mason Clinic building during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her contributions to fostering team collaboration, standardizing processes, and prioritizing patient experience have earned her accolades, including being named one of Mason Health’s Employees of the Month in 2023.

“Kelly has developed a stellar reputation for her collaborative approach and unwavering commitment to patient and provider satisfaction,” Moll said.

.

“Her leadership, work ethic and dedication to rural health care make her an exceptional choice for this role.”

North plans to build on her achievements by collaborating closely with specialty practices, care coordination, and other departments to enhance operations and support Mason Health’s mission of providing exceptional care.

With these leadership changes, Mason Health is poised to continue its tradition of excellence while embracing new opportunities for growth and innovation. Join us in welcoming Winfried Danke and celebrating Kelly North!

Mason Health welcomes new primary care provider Dr. Tanveer Sidhu

Mason Health proudly welcomed the arrival of Tanveer Sidhu, MD, a dedicated and highly skilled primary care provider, this past fall. With a passion for comprehensive patient care and a deep commitment to community health, Dr. Sidhu began seeing patients in late November and is now accepting new patients.

Dr. Sidhu grew up in Toronto, Canada, where his inspiration to pursue medicine came from watching his family physician.

“They had great communication skills and were able to relate to everyone in my family,” he shared. “Seeing that kind of connection and impact made me want to become a family physician myself.”

Dr. Sidhu completed his undergraduate studies in neuroscience at the University of Toronto in 2017 before attending medical school at St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada.

His clinical rotations in New York City, including time at the renowned Mount Sinai Hospital, exposed him to a diverse range of patients and medical conditions, solidifying his interest in family medicine.

“Family medicine appealed to me because of its breadth,” he said. “You get to see everyone, from children to the elderly, and practice a full scope of care, including procedures and urgent care. It’s a chance to be a staple in the community.”

Dr. Sidhu brings a special focus on managing metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes, and weight-related health challenges — issues he first encountered during his time in Grenada and later during the COVID-19 pandemic in New York. His dedication to improving patient outcomes extended to publishing research on infectious diseases during this pivotal time.

In addition to chronic care management, Dr. Sidhu is skilled in addressing geriatric health needs, pain management through joint injections, skin examinations and addiction treatment. His diverse expertise ensures patients receive personalized and comprehensive care tailored to their needs.

Dr. Sidhu and his partner, Alyssa Sethi, DO, a provider who joined Mason Clinic last year, were drawn to the beauty and community of the Pacific Northwest, especially because they have family in British Columbia.

“We’ve always wanted to move west,” Dr. Sidhu explained. “We immediately felt a family atmosphere here. It’s more than just going to work; it’s about being part of a community. That’s so important to me.”

To schedule an appointment with Dr. Sidhu, call Mason ClinicPrimary Care at 360-426-2653.

Did

you know Mason Health offers tuition reimbursement?

Mason Health values career development and understands the importance of growth opportunities for current and prospective employees. The District has a number of pathways available for individuals looking to start their career, grow their skillsets, or transition to new career paths.

After 90 days of employment, Mason Health employees are eligible for tuition reimbursement.

Mason Health also offers registered nursing residency options, certified nursing assistant growth programs, a nurse tech pathway for new registered nurses and, in partnership with Washington state, a medical assistant apprenticeship program that supports new medical assistants in their training and careers.

The medical assistant apprenticeship program is a one-year program through Mason Clinic that allows students to work while learning. Once the program is complete and the student achieves certification, they are able to work at Mason Clinic, if there is an open position.

“I decided to participate in the apprenticeship program because of the amazing opportunities it provides,” said Jenelle Beem, an ophthalmic tech at Mason Clinic-Eye Care, working as a medical assistant apprentice this year. “As a current Mason Clinic employee, I am already comfortable with the environment and know my colleagues and supervisor are reliable and great people to learn from. I am thrilled to be able to work in Pediatrics as I’ve been interested in it since I started working in the medical field. I was nervous to start this year-long journey, but the end result will be rewarding and pushes me to be the best version of myself.”

Kiely Roath is another medical assistant apprentice working at Mason Clinic-Hoodsport.

“I am a single mom so going the traditional route was not an option for me,” Roath shared. “The program and assistance from Mason Health allowed me to follow my dream and still provide for my daughter. This program was a game changer for me. I am so excited for this next chapter in my career and all the future has in store for me here. I couldn’t be happier with my choice to become a medical assistant.”

Mason Health achieves full threeyear accreditation from DNV Healthcare, USA, Inc.

Mason Health proudly to announced last fall that it had been awarded full accreditation for a three-year term by DNV Healthcare USA Inc., affirming the organization’s compliance with the Medicare Conditions of Participation for Critical Access Hospitals.

This achievement underscores Mason Health’s commitment to delivering high-quality care and meeting the stringent standards required by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). DNV Healthcare USA Inc. is a national accreditation organization dedicated to helping health care organizations improve quality, patient safety and health care delivery.

Exploring health care careers through Volunteer and Job Shadow opportunities

For anyone curious about the medical field or looking to make a difference in their community, Mason Health offers exceptional volunteer and job shadow programs. These opportunities provide up-close insights into the health care environment and open doors to personal and professional growth. There are job shadow and volunteer opportunities at Mason Clinic, Mason General Hospital and in the office setting offsite.

The accreditation applies to all Mason Health facilities operating under Public Hospital District No. 1 of Mason County.

Mason Health Senior Director of Performance Excellence Nicole Eddins leads Mason Health’s quality and process improvement teams, who work hard to ensure various departments have the tools they need to meet and exceed industry standards.

“Our performance with DNV reminds me of Vince Lombardi’s quote, ‘Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence,’” she said.

The DNV accreditation requires Mason Health to undergo annual surveys and maintain consistent compliance with DNV’s rigorous National Integrated Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations standards. Through this program, DNV evaluates and certifies that Mason Health’s management systems align with essential safety and quality requirements, ensuring the highest standard of care for the Mason County community. “This accreditation is a testament to the dedication of our entire team at Mason Health,” said Mason Health CEO Eric Moll. “Our commitment to meeting and exceeding these standards reflects our ongoing mission to provide exceptional, patient-centered care.”

Raising awareness for breast and cervical cancers

Mason Health’s providers are committed to women’s health. Ask your provider if you need to be scheduled for a mammogram this year and be sure to schedule regular gynecological appointments.

The Karen Hilburn Cancer Fund can cover mammograms and cervical cancer screenings for women who are uninsured and underinsured.

The nonprofit is hosting two events this spring to raise awareness and funds for women’s health screening services: Denim & Diamonds will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, at Alderbrook Resort & Spa and a Mother’s Day Dash will take place at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 11. At just 17 years old, Birth Center volunteer Anneliese Thomas is well on her way to pursuing her dream of working with newborns at a neonatal unit or in Labor & Delivery at a hospital.

Thomas’ mother, Marica Thomas, works as a labor and delivery nurse at Mason Health’s Birth Center, where Thomas decided to complete a job shadow at the end of last year.

“Ever since I was younger, hearing my mom’s stories from the hospital, I’ve always been interested in nursing,” she said. “That job shadow helped me realize that I wanted to work with babies. I got to see a C-section, a vaginal delivery, and how my mom interacted with moms and their newborns. It solidified my passion for this field.”

Mason Health’s Job Shadow Program provides invaluable exposure for anyone exploring careers in health care, including high school and college students. Open to individuals aged 16 and above, the program allows participants to shadow professionals across various departments, including nursing, pediatrics, OB/GYN, diagnostic imaging and more.

After her job shadow, Thomas transitioned into a volunteer role, dedicating 6-12 hours per week to supporting the Birth Center. This is a pilot volunteer program for the Birth Center. She plans to attend a local college to pursue nursing in the fall.

“Volunteering makes me more confident in my passion for working with babies,” she said. “It’s an amazing way to solidify your goals while helping your community. If you have an idea of where you want to go, having a job shadow experience helps you get your foot in the door and explore different areas.”

Job shadows typically last 4-8 hours, with options to explore multiple departments. While not hands-on, these experiences provide a behindthe-scenes view of the daily operations within a hospital, which can be transformative for participants. Shadows are available in a variety of departments.

Open volunteer positions include: Emergency Department Concierge, Mason Clinic Concierge, Chaplain, Culinary & Nutrition Services Volunteer, Foundation Auxiliary Gift Shop Volunteer and Office Volunteer working with fundraising, events, marketing and volunteer services.

Mason Health earns its Fourth Energy Star certification

Mason County Public Hospital District No. 1 is once again announcing that Mason Health has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® certification for superior energy performance. This is the fourth year that Mason General Hospital and Mason Clinic have earned the ENERGY STAR, reflecting a legacy of continued energy savings. This year’s Energy Star rating is 83 out of 100.

ENERGY STAR certified buildings and plants are verified to perform in the top 25 percent of buildings nationwide, based on weather-normalized source energy use that takes into account occupancy, hours of operation, and other key metrics. ENERGY STAR is the only energy efficiency certification in the United States that is based on actual, verified energy performance.

“We’re honored to earn the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance at Mason Health and appreciate the efforts of everyone who has been involved in its efficient operation,” said Patrick O’Neil, Director of Facilities Engineering and a member of Mason Health’s Green Team. “Saving energy is just one of the ways we show our community we care, and that we’re committed to doing our part to protect the environment and public health, both today and for future generations.”

Compared to the national median, Mason Health prevents 225.4 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year, outperforming 83 percent of similar buildings nationwide. Mason General Hospital and Mason Clinic’s carbon dioxide emissions savings are equivalent to the electricity usage of 47 homes for an entire year.
