continues to expand its services to meet the needs of our growing community, and in 2017 eight new providers joined the medical staff at the Hospital and Clinics. All of these new health care providers are strongly aligned with MGH&FC’s mission of Patients First and the provision of excellence in patient-centered care.

Alyssa Abegg-Garcia, ARNP, joined MGH&FC on November 13, 2017. She is board-certified with the American Association of Nurse Practitioners Alyssa Abegg(AANP) and a licensed Garcia, ARNP practitioner in the state of Washington. Alyssa obtained her nursing degree from Seattle University in 2017, where she graduated with honors. Originally from Fairbanks, Alaska, Alyssa also lived in San Francisco, where she gained experience working in a low-income women’s health clinic. She now enjoys serving her new community in the Pacific Northwest. In her spare time Alyssa enjoys hiking, playing soccer, and snowboarding; and when it’s raining you can find her baking, knitting, pampering her cat or working on home improvement projects. She is currently taking new patients at MGH Olympic Physicians.

Erin Anderson, MSN, FNP, is a board-certified family nurse practitioner licensed in the state of Washington.

She graduated with honors from Seattle University’s Erin Anderson, Family Nurse Practitioner FNP (FNP) program in 2017.

Prior to becoming a nurse practitioner, Erin worked for 13 years as an RN in a variety of settings. While completing her FNP program in 2015, she did her clinical placement at MGH Olympic Physicians and found she loved working there. She later chose to come back, and started her practice at MGH&FC on December 11, 2017. Erin grew up in Gig Harbor and moved to Vacaville, 2 S C O P E

California in 2003 where she served as a Lieutenant in the Air Force for three and a half years. She has received the Air Force Commendation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. When not working as a nurse practitioner, Erin enjoys time with her husband and their two children who keep her busy with soccer and gymnastics.

She likes snowboarding, traveling, and working out at the YMCA where she also fills in as an instructor for a boot camp class.

Erin is presently taking new patients at MGH Olympic Physicians.

MGH Olympic Physicians is a full-service family medical clinic located at 237 Professional Way, across from Mason General Hospital in Shelton, and is headed by Dr. Mark Schlauderaff, MD, internal medicine.

Its staff of family practitioners include Allen Millard, MD; Rebecca Hendryx, MD; In Kyu Yoo, MD, internal medicine; Jennifer Nelson, ARNP; Alyssa Abegg-Garcia, ARNP; Erin Anderson, FNP; and Physician Assistants – Lisa Dell, Katie Hackney and KC Graham.

Olympic Physicians is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed daily from noon to 1 p.m., and on holidays.

Anthony Gordon, PA-C, board-certified with the NCCPA, joined MGH&FC in November 2017. He graduated from MEDEX Northwest-University of Anthony Washington in 2016 and Gordon, PA-C completed a fellowship in urgent care in 2017. Anthony enjoys the urgent care setting because it gives him the opportunity to treat a wide variety of medical conditions. With a team approach to caring for patients, Anthony establishes a trust with them, taking into consideration their needs while delivering high quality care.

He is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) as well as the Washington Academy of Physician Assistants (WAPA). Anthony grew up in the Pacific Northwest and enjoys fishing and spending time with his wife and four children.

He began seeing patients at MGH Walk-InClinic on November 3, 2017.

Hillary Underwood, PA-C, is a board-certified Physician assistant with more than 20 years’ experience. A graduate of the University of Kentucky, Hillary holds two Hillary Bachelor’s degrees and has Underwood, PA-C worked in medical centers in Kentucky, North Carolina, New Mexico, and Colorado, where she gained specialized experience in cardiology, cardiovascular, vascular and thoracic surgery, as well as general/trauma surgery. She started her medical career working at the University of Kentucky Medical Center where she was part of the first heart/lung transplant surgery.

She had some early training in primary care and OB/GYN in Wolverhampton, UK, and has additional training in emergency medicine and pain management. With her well-rounded medical background, extensive experience in primary care with rural and underserved populations, and her love of the Northwest, Hillary is a great asset to MGH&FC’s medical staff. She joined MGH&FC on October 30, 2017 and is currently seeing patients at the Walk-In Clinic and MGH Shelton Family Medicine and Orthopedics.

MGH Walk-In Clinic and Shelton Family Medicine and Orthopedics see patients of all ages and are located next to the Hospital at 939 Mountain View Drive. MGH&FC coordinates care from pregnancy to motherhood

Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics offers a comprehensive system of care to pregnant women that begins with excellent prenatal care, continues into labor & delivery and right through to post-partum pediatric and well-mother care. Mountain View Women’s Health, The Birth Center at Mason General Hospital and Oakland Bay Pediatrics collaborate to provide a continuity of care for mother and baby that’s close to home and family.

“It begins at Mountain View Women’s Health (MVWH) with education for mothers-to-be at every prenatal visit,” said Marcia Rohlik, RN, MSN, service line director for MVWH, The Birth Center and Oakland Bay Pediatrics.

“Education is furthered for pregnant women and their support persons who attend the voluntary MVWH Childbirth Education Classes and other programs to prepare pregnant mothers before the baby arrives”.

The Breastfeeding Program explains all the benefits of breastfeeding and offers instruction to women without experience to help prepare them. There is also the Infant Safe Sleep Program with education and instruction on how to create a safe sleep

environment for newborns, the dangers of toys and blankets in the crib, and the best sleep positions for baby. The Period of PURPLE Crying Program helps mothers understand and interpret a baby’s cry, and can alleviate frustration when a baby’s crying is persistent and without apparent reason.

“Educating mothers before the baby is born helps enormously to ease the adjustment of both baby and mom,” Rohlik added.

‘Hands-on’ education takes over in The Birth Center, where mothers receive breastfeeding support from an excellent staff of registered nurses (RN) who are board-certified lactation consultants (BCLC). The Birth Center at Mason General Hospital currently has six RNs with this designation, and MGH&FC is making application to be designated as a ‘Breastfeeding-Friendly Washington’ facility.

The Birth Center also reinforces infant safe sleep by demonstrating correct swaddling and positioning of an infant in the crib – on their backs for sleep, on their tummies for play. Parents can take home DVD’s or written instructions for post-natal care, and as a reminder of the Period of PURPLE Crying Program, babies continued on page 12...

Richard Adrian Calmo-Pablo came into the world as MGH&FC’s 2018 New Year’s Baby, delivered by Dr. Elizabeth Carder of Mountain View Women’s Health.

Weighing 6 lbs. 12 oz., and 20 inches long, he is shown here with first-time parents Francisco and Odilia, and with Pediatrician Binod Tuladhar, MD (right) of Oakland Bay Pediatrics. MGH&FC’s Birth Center staff presented the young family with a lovely gift basket filled with a collection of baby items that included a hand-crocheted, stuffed octopus whose coiled tentacles, with a likeness to the prenatal umbilical cord, have a soothing effect on newborn babies.

“Patients coming in for physical therapy are saying great things about their treatment and recovery,” said Woods.

Lynne Fish, a 74 year-old Shelton resident who had double knee replacement in 2017 is very pleased with his progress. He had his right knee replaced on April 17th and his left knee done on December 20th, and by the middle of January was using just a cane to get around. “I highly recommend knee replacement with the great team at Mason General,” said Fish, who is planning a road trip to the east coast with his wife this summer.

The total knee system used today offers more size and gender-specific implant options which reduce pain, side effects and recovery time. “Twenty-five to thirty percent of knee replacement patients are able to go home the same day as surgery due to better pain management,” claimed Dr. Henry. Rehabilitation begins in the recovery room with the patient standing up and putting weight on the knee immediately after surgery, followed by physical therapy sessions two to three times a week.

Dr. Henry also performs hip replacements using a more sophisticated, anterior surgical technique that further benefits the patient’s recovery. Using a frontal incision, rather than the more common side or posterior approach, the patient’s pain and side effects can be even further reduced.

Coordinating orthopedic care with physical therapy at MGH is another great advantage

Orthopedic Surgeon Michael Henry, MD, and Clinic Manager Shanna Marsh are part of a collaborative team of orthopedic specialists at Mason General Hospital Family Medicine and Orthopedics.

MGH&FC has a Walk-In Clinic that can solve the problem and is available seven days a week, including holidays. With a larger staff of medical providers and the new Sunday business hours, you and your family can feel better knowing that good care is available when your doctor is not.

The Walk-In Clinic sees patients of all ages for minor illnesses and non-life-threatening injuries such as a cough, fever, sinus infection, sore throat, ear ache, rash, and allergies, as well as minor cuts, insect bites, sprains, and other minor injuries.

The Walk-In Clinic opened in May of 2015 with Lucinda Boudreau, PA-C as the primary provider, and its staff has since grown to include Lisa Dell, PA-C; Hillary Underwood, PA-C; and Anthony Gordon, PA-C. The Clinic has four exam rooms and a modern, comfortable waiting room adjacent to Shelton Family Medicine and Orthopedics.

No appointments needed at the Walk-In Clinic, and patients are seen on a ‘first-come first-served’ basis.

“Expanded hours of service and an increased medical staff allow us to better serve the needs of patients,” said Kathy Dorcy, Clinic manager. “And it’s wonderful for the community to have the option of being seen on a Sunday,” she added.

Classes & Worshops First Aid/CPR/AED courses in April, May, & June

Class size is limited to 16 persons, and an early, non-refundable registration fee of $40 (exact cash or check) is required to cover the cost of books and materials. It is open to the entire community and a Spanish interpreter can be made available upon request. Comfortable clothing is recommended.

Cancer Wellness Workshops in April, May & June MGH&FC and Harmony Hill Retreat Center continue to offer a series of Cancer Wellness Workshops that meet every second Wednesday of the month from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in the Ellinor Meeting Room at MGH. Featuring various topics and speakers, the Cancer Wellness Program is free and open to anyone with a cancer diagnosis, those in survivorship, their companions, and caregivers. Sara Holt-Knox, ARNP, joined the medical staff of MGH&FC in February of 2017, integrating her experience in mental health care to the primary Sara Holt-Knox, ARNP medical care setting. She graduated with a Master’s degree in nursing from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, and is board-certified with the AANP. Sara has worked in psychiatric, inpatient, and 10 S C O P E

emergency hospital departments, and has special interests in diabetes, chronic disease management, preventive health care and wellness. She believes that everyone should have access to regular health screenings, preventive care and disease management to assist them in reaching their personal health goals. She strives to provide holistic care that promotes open dialogue with her patients and respects their individual beliefs. Born and raised in Washington, Sara enjoys the opportunities for outdoor recreation this region offers.

MGH Hoodsport Family Clinic (HFC) partners with MGH&FC in patient-centered care and its strong system of support. The Clinic serves Hoodsport, Lilliwaup, Union, and all parts in between. Run by Hilary Walker, ARNP, and Sara Holt-Knox, ARNP, HFC provides family medical care and mental health services to patients of all ages. The

New Medical Office Building on horizon as MGH&FC celebrates 50th Anniversary Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics

continues to expand with the community, delivering excellence in patient-centered care and increasing community outreach and access to health care services.

As Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics celebrates its 50th anniversary, an even bigger hospital expansion is about to take place, with the addition of a 60,000 square-foot medical office building. The two-story building will be located on-campus adjacent to the hospital’s main building, facing 13th Street.

The $35 million construction project has been approved by the Hospital Board of Commissioners and is set to begin this year with a completion date slated for the end of 2019.

The Hospital will issue bonds to pay off the debt with existing operating revenue, so there will be no need for taxpayer funding.

MGH&FC turns 50!

“The new medical office building is the next step in the ongoing modernization and expansion of our Shelton campus to better serve our patients, families, staff, providers and visitors,” said Scott Hilburn, President, Board of Hospital Commissioners.

The plan is to consolidate surrounding clinics by moving them all under one roof, thus improving patient access to services. Exam room capacity will increase from 71 to 104 rooms to serve more patients and accommodate a larger staff.

Nearby neighbors were given a preview of the project in late October, and they welcomed it with enthusiasm. “I think the hospital is an outstanding neighbor,” said Ginger Brooks, a Sherwood Lane homeowner. “I’m thrilled about the new building plans, and the impacts from construction will be temporary, so I say – go for it”.

MGH Oakland Bay Pediatrics (OBP) continues care after the baby’s arrival with well-baby and well-mother checks.

Screening mothers with lactation assessments and psychological checks for post-partum depression or difficulty adjusting to the new baby, OBP offers further support and education for a mother’s wellness. The infant’s progress is monitored with well-baby checks and pediatric testing for developmental delays in care that continues through infancy and into childhood.

MGH&FC has other resources for patients who need extra help, including our Care Coordination Services, help obtaining insurance to cover pregnancy, and counseling. Eligible patients can also be referred to two excellent, communitybased programs that can include home visits: Maternity Support Services and the Nurse-Family Partnership. After the baby is born they can continue to assist, and the newborn may also be eligible for the Birth-to-Three Program.

The collaboration of these three services for a seamless continuity of care is part of MGH&FC’s commitment to the community and excellence in health care.

“They also follow up with phone calls to monitor progress after mother and baby go home,” said Rohlik. “It’s like you are part of the family.”

2018 ‘Tour de Mason Lake’ Annual Bike Ride for Karen Hilburn Cancer Fund The 4th Annual ‘Tour de Mason Lake’ bicycle ride – a Karen Hilburn Cancer Fund event – is set for Saturday, June 9, 2018. Check-in is at 7:45 a.m. in the parking lot at El Puerto de Angeles (across from Shelton McDonald’s) and the event starts from there at 8:30 a.m. The entry fee is $40 per person, and the beautifully scenic course is a choice of either a 20, 32, or 44-mile circuit around Mason Lake with medium, rolling hills.

También contamos con el Programa Sueño Seguro Infantil (Infant Safe Sleep Program) con educación e instrucciones sobre cómo crear un ambiente seguro para los recién nacidos, los peligros que presentan los juguetes y las mantas en la cuna y cuáles son las mejores posiciones de dormir para el bebé. El Programa del Llanto Inconsolable (Purple Crying) ayuda a las madres a entender e interpretar el llanto de un bebé, y cómo aliviarse de la frustración cuando el llanto es persistente y sin causa aparente.

“El educar a las madres antes del nacimiento del bebé es una enorme ayuda para facilitar el ajuste de ambos, del bebé y de la madre, “añadió Rohlik.

La educación práctica se da lugar en el Centro de Maternidad. Allí las madres reciben apoyo para la

lactancia de enfermeras certificadas en asesoría de lactancia (BCLC). El Centro de Maternidad del Hospital cuenta actualmente con seis enfermeras registradas con este título, y MGH&FC está en el proceso de solicitud para convertirse en una instalación “facilitadora de la lactancia de Washington”. El Centro de Maternidad también refuerza el sueño seguro del bebé demostrando la manera correcta de envolver al bebé y a posicionarlo en la cuna - de espalda para dormir, de panza para jugar. Los padres pueden llevarse a la casa el DVD o las instrucciones escritas para el cuidado posnatal, y como recordatorio del Programa del Periodo del Llanto Inconsolable, los bebés van a la casa puestos con gorritos de color púrpura hechos por mujeres de la comunidad. Antes de salir del Centro de Maternidad (Birth Center), el personal muestra a los padres la colocación correcta del bebé en el asiento de seguridad durante el transporte en vehículo, pero la recomendación es que consulte con un profesional certificado que explique la instalación del asiento en el vehículo.

El MGH&FC cuenta con otros recursos para pacientes que necesitan apoyo adicional incluyendo el Servicio de Coordinación de Cuidados, para obtener seguro médico hasta el embarazo y consejería. Además, los pacientes que califiquen para estos servicios pueden ser referidos a dos programas excelentes que incluyen visitas a domicilio: Servicios de Apoyo de Maternidad (Maternity Support Services) y Asociación de Enfermeras de Familia (Nurse-Family Partnership).

Después que el bebé ha nacido, ellos pueden seguir brindando apoyo, y también los recién nacidos que califiquen pueden participar del Programa De Nacimiento a Tres (Birth-to-Three Program).

La colaboración de estos tres servicios para una continuidad de cuidado sin interrupciones es parte del compromiso de MGH&FC a la comunidad y de excelencia en la atención médica. “También, ellos dan seguimiento mediante llamadas telefónicas para monitorear el progreso después que la madre y el bebé se han ido a la casa,” dijo Rohlik. “Es como si tú eres parte de la familia.”
