it throws us a loop that puts us into depression or causes anxiety, we often need professional help to give us the tools and encouragement to get us through.

According to Harvard Health Publications of Harvard Medical School, it’s no secret that regular exercise and outdoor activities can be part of the equation to improve Amber Carlson mental health. Take LICSW it from MGH&FC’s two Licensed Independent Clinical Social Workers Amber Carlson, LICSW, and Erin Martinache, LICSW. They should know – both provide counseling services for the Mental Health and Wellness Program in MGH&FC’s Care Coordination Services at MGH Shelton Family Medicine, and MGH Olympic Physicians.

And they both appreciate the benefits of outdoor exercise.

“I first started running in 2013, as a way to relieve stress and get healthier,” Carlson said. Since then, running half and whole marathons have become her greatest hobby. So far, she has completed four halfmarathons and one full marathon. Carlson, who also loves traveling with her husband, Christopher, is now training with the Central Park Conservancy Team for the New York Marathon taking place in November.

Martinache agrees, “I have always loved being outdoors, and being active in nature.

When it comes to mental health treatment, these two therapists want to clear away any apprehensions people may have associated with their services. “We are Erin Martinache partnering with the LICSW outpatient clinics to see patients in an environment that will hopefully take the stigma out of seeking help for something that’s just another facet of their total health,” Martinache explained.

“Counseling is a very personal matter and choice. My role as a therapist is to be an advocate and a partner to help a patient navigate their journey,” Carlson said. “For some patients, this involves only a few visits to work through an adjustment to a new diagnosis, or the loss of a loved one. For others, the journey may take longer, to work through whatever issues they bring to the table. First and foremost as a social worker, I believe in meeting the patient on their own terms – starting with what they want to work on, where they want to explore. Initially, a patient may come in on their physician’s referral, but ultimately, they are in the driver’s seat, so to speak. I want to help the patient work on what is valuable and important to them. My ultimate goal is to help patients meet their mental health needs, in addition to their physical health.”

Family health is important to Oakland Bay Pediatrics Pediatric care involves more than treating a child – it involves care for the child’s whole family. This is how providers at Oakland Bay Pediatrics (OBP) view their practice.

“Our approach to providing care to our kids, in essence, is to also take care of their whole family,” said Barbara Schmidt, office manager at OBP. “For example, we address postpartum depression in new moms – which is often overlooked as care transitions from mom to baby after childbirth.”

OBP providers actively support new mothers by partnering with the Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington, and operating a breastfeeding program in tandem with Mason General Hospital’s Birth Center and the community. OBP also provides on-site lead testing for children of all ages.

Whenever families need medical attention outside of regular office hours, OBP’s phone lines connect callers directly to a licensed nurse advisory team. On-call providers are also available evenings and weekends.

Reaching out to the Spanish-speaking community, OBP has bilingual front-desk staff. Clinic providers also speak some Spanish, and provide interpretive services through a live, online video system. About 35 percent of the families who regularly visit OBP speak more Spanish than English.

MGH&FC named Most Wired – ninth year in a row!

Early July, Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics was named a “Most Wired Hospital” in 2016. This is the ninth straight year MGH&FC has received this prestigious designation given by the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Health Forum.

The AHA’s 2016 Most Wired Survey and benchmarking study is a leading industry barometer measuring information technology (IT) use and adoption among hospitals, nationwide. The survey represented an estimated 2,146 hospitals—more than 34 percent of all hospitals in the U.S. In making the announcement Eric Moll, CEO of MGH&FC commented, “We are once again delighted to have received this outstanding recognition for the ninth year in a row. This year’s survey was based on how we have leveraged our IT to improve performance for value-based health care in the areas of infrastructure, business and administrative management, quality and safety, and clinical integration. The Most Wired award presents a strong alignment with our District’s Strategic Vision of United Community, Empowered People, Exceptional Health. This was all made possible through the leadership of Tom Hornburg, our chief information officer and his outstanding staff.”

explained. “Our culture is not readily accepting of strong emotions, and so people are often discouraged from expressing them. Therapy is a great place to be able to work through uncomfortable thoughts and emotions.”

“Carlson and Martinache have made positive changes in the treatment and support of patients suffering from depression, grief and other situational illnesses,” said Terri Gushee, R.N., director of Care Coordination Services for MGH&FC. “They treat a wide range of patient populations, including elderly Medicare patients who may suffer from grief after losing a spouse,” Gushee said. These therapists also help connect patients to community resources.

“A comprehensive health care system must support mental health integration, which means that behavioral health and medical services are provided in one treatment plan,” Gushee said. “It’s about treating the patient at the point of care where he or she is most comfortable, and applies a patient-centered approach to treatment.”

Both therapists see numerous positive outcomes from the services they provide.

“We have had a few patients come in while in a crisis that we have been able to support with immediate or next-day counseling appointments, as well as connecting them to our tele-psychiatry services,” Carlson said.

“I was honored to be able to help a patient begin the work of grieving the loss of a spouse,” Martinache commented. “Another young woman, with so much anxiety she hasn’t been able to leave her home, is now working her way to the mailbox!” Martinache is also using Dialectical Behavior Therapy to gain insight and build coping skills for a woman who has had struggles with past trauma and intense emotions for several years.

diabetes but above normal blood sugar levels are also vulnerable, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine [August, 2013].

Data from more than 2,000 older adults (average age, 76) indicated that any increase in blood sugar was associated with an increased risk of dementia.

The higher the blood sugar, the higher the risk. One theory is that insulin resistance related to higher consumption of sugar causes damage in certain areas of the brain.

The study does not prove that high blood sugar causes dementia, only that there is an association between the two.

community Students blossom at HOPE Garden Since its start in 2010 – when Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics donated hospital grounds for an educational community garden – the Hands-On Personal Empowerment (HOPE) Garden Project, has helped local students flourish as they gain personal growth through gardening.

Sponsored by MGH&FC and Mason Matters, the garden concept first took root when the Mason County Community Health Task Force decided to target obesity, diabetes, and chronic disease through preventive measures such as better nutrition and more physical activity. This effort has proven to be fruitful.

“We have seen amazing things happen with so many of the students who have gone through our program,” said HOPE Garden Co-Director Ginger Seslar who co-directs HOPE Garden with fellow Co-Director Rachel Uberman. While leading the program with Seslar, Uberman helps oversee the design and development of the program’s highschool curriculum.

“Some, who would have never have thought about going to college are now excelling in their higher education. Many go through 6 S C O P E

major physical changes getting healthy,” said Seslar. “Others grow internally; where they were bullies or experimenting with drugs or other illegal activities, they are now confident leaders among their peers. Getting sober, focusing on school, finding positive outlets and helping others, they become active, contributing members of our community.

And many have used our program as a stepping stone to good jobs with career potential.

“I witnessed one student last year who was so paralyzed by anxiety when asked to speak to a stranger or in front of a group that she would burst into tears, unable to utter a single word. At the end of last summer, she volunteered to speak at our ribbon cutting event in front of 100-plus attendees; it was a magical moment for all of us. They all get something different from our program, but the impact is huge, not just on our students, but on our community as a whole,” added Seslar.

HOPE Garden originally began as a small plot of land along Mountain View Drive, across the street from MGH&FC’s main facility next to MGH Eye Clinic. The “hope” was that this could become a community garden that symbolized preventative medicine. Today, this community garden project has bloomed into a full-fledged educational program. This summer, 23 teenage students from CHOICE and Shelton High schools are participating in HOPE Garden’s regular summer program.

Additionally, the program has branched out to provide an elementary summer garden camp for up to a dozen participating students at the new Evergreen Elementary HOPE Garden.

The high school crew serves at the garden from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m., three days a week, each earning a stipend of $25 per day. All summer long students also have the chance to take home much of the food they harvest from the garden. “But what they really earn is

These high school students are in charge of the entire garden. “They plant, build beds and fences, amend soil, compost, water, monitor, fertilize, harvest and cook. And they are held to high standards while in our program,” Seslar said. The students also participate in workshops, teaching nonviolent communication, food justice and social justice. They learn leadership, selfworth, communication skills, empathy and understanding, and community pride. “And they are expected to practice their new skills while at HOPE,” Seslar added.

On Wednesday afternoons, students also participate in job-skill workshops involving real job skills for real industries.

Job skills covered this year include bicycle maintenance and repair, floristry, value-added products, business management, marketing and sales. Additionally, each student helps out at least one Saturday during the summer in the HOPE Garden booth at the Shelton Farmer’s Market.

CHOICE High School students are able to take part in HOPE Garden’s program as early as January. During the school year, these students serve at HOPE Garden on Fridays, performing garden prep and initial planting, as well as attending nutrition, cooking, and leadership workshops. HOPE Garden also teaches all students to cultivate a healthy lifestyle that incorporates regular exercise. Shelton High School students join forces in the first full week of summer vacation, and continue until the week before school begins in the fall. At that time, students may choose to stay on through October – to finish harvesting, plant winter crops, and put unused areas to bed for the winter. Recently, members of the agricultural and food partnership (GRuB) of Thurston and Mason Counties helped mentor HOPE Garden students. “It’s a really great community program,” said participating student Reagan O’Donnell, who is entering her

sophomore year at Shelton High.

“I love it here!”

O’Donnell is enthusiastic about the program’s positive, close-knit atmosphere, and its resourceful focus– such as recycling grass clippings and cardboard from the hospital, and finding a place and purpose for every fruit, vegetable, herb or flower they plant.

Serving in HOPE Garden together has helped O’Donnell and her older sister, Morgan, grow closer this summer. “We work better together now,” she said.

“Getting to work with these young people, learning about their struggles, their goals, and just being around them – gives me such pride and hope for our future,” Seslar said. “They are strong and bright and so inspiring. They probably don’t realize how they impact my life and outlook on the world as much, or more, than I impact theirs.”

This past spring, 240 MGH&FC employees

took a “virtual” trek along the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) which runs north from Mexico, through California, Oregon, and Washington before ending in British Columbia. Twenty-four teams of 10 employees each joined this event, and collectively walked 2,650 miles (the distance of the PCT) over 6 weeks, from April 5 to May 17.

Ten of the 24 teams completed the entire 2,650 mile goal, and two teams completed it in only five weeks! The top three teams were “Raisin’ a Little Health”, Culinary and Nutrition Services Department employees; “Healthy Feet”, MGH Family Health, Ankle and Foot Clinic employees; and “The Lifesavers”, Emergency Department, Laboratory, and Registration Services employees. Prizes were awarded along the way for reaching certain milestones, as well as to the teams completing the entire trek.

“We all need a little motivation to get moving sometimes, and this is a fun way to do it,” said MGH&FC Dietitian Sarah Fulkerson, RD, CDE. “The enthusiasm and level of participation was inspiring. Hopefully we will all keep on trekking!”

news briefs / classes / support groups Charitable Trust donates to Karen Hilburn Breast & Cervical Cancer Fund The Karen Hilburn Breast & Cervical Cancer Fund, a chapter of Mason General Hospital Foundation, was presented – for the fifth year in a row – with a check for $25,000 from the Charitable Trust of Margery Jones, a former Shelton resident and cancer survivor. Margery Jones left her estate to be donated to charitable non-profits. This is the fifth consecutive year the Hilburn Fund has been a major recipient. Over the last five years Jones’ estate has donated to the Karen Hilburn Fund a total of $120,000. “We are so very grateful for their continued support of our Fund,” said Founder Karen Hilburn. “This donation continues to help Mason County women that are underinsured or uninsured with their diagnoses and treatment of breast and cervical cancer.” Pictured here with Karen Hilburn is Jones’ niece, Betty Temple (right), who has made the donation every year in her aunt’s memory.

October Cancer Wellness Workshops MGH&FC and Harmony Hill Retreat Center are offering a series of Cancer Wellness Workshops which began in September and will run until August 2017, and are held every second Wednesday of the month. Hosted by MGH&FC Patient Navigator Karry Trout, BA, RT(R)(M), CN-BI, and facilitated by Harmony Hill faculty members, Denise Carrico, J. Fields, and Melissa Layer, the workshops aim to help individuals feel a sense of control in their lives. By building confidence and emotional strength, you’ll learn how to respond to stress and develop new skills for healing. Classes include supportive group discussions, journaling, gentle movement and creative arts to promote self-care and positive change. Featuring various topics and speakers, the Cancer Wellness Program is free and open to anyone with a cancer diagnosis, those in survivorship, their companions and caregivers.

MGH offers Cancer Wellness Workshops Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics and Harmony Hill Retreat Center are offering

a series of Cancer Wellness Workshops which began in September and are running until August 2017. They will be held every second Wednesday of the month from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in the Pershing Meeting Room at Mason General Hospital.

Featuring various topics and speakers, the Cancer Wellness program is free and open to anyone with a cancer diagnosis, those in survivorship, their companions, and caregivers.

Hosted by MGH&FC Patient Navigator Karry Trout, BA, RT(R)(M), CN-BI, and facilitated by Harmony Hill faculty members, Denise Carrico, J. Fields, and Melissa Layer, the workshops aim to help individuals feel a sense of control in their lives.

By building confidence and emotional strength, you’ll learn how to respond to stress and develop new skills for healing. Classes include supportive group discussions, journaling, gentle movement and creative arts to promote self-care and positive change.

Mason General Hospital Foundation’s 22nd Annual ‘Quality Care

The funds raised at the 2016 Tournament will go toward the purchase of a new MRI/CT 3-D Workstation for MGH&FC’s Diagnostic Imaging Department. The 3D Workstation provides advanced

imaging technology and brings the power of image processing found in larger institutions into our community. This new technology also aids in diagnosing any vascular blockages and in diagnosing strokes, including computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) and lung nodule tracking for low-dose lung cancer screening. Included are software applications for cardiac, vascular, lung and body diagnostic equipment such as ‘virtual colonoscopy’.
