on its north side, and in 1979 contracted with South Sound Radiology in Olympia for x-ray services. MGH Auxiliary, so vital to the Hospital’s equipment needs, had championed Mason General’s success with its tireless fundraising efforts.

Mason General Hospital got its first accreditation from the Joint Commission in 1971, and in that decade added its Employee-of-the-Month program and the beginnings of a public education program.

In 1981 the Hospital began advertising its classes and services in the first issue of SCOPE newsletter.†

Meeting the community’s growing needs

A small hospital and community transformation On October 1, 1968, after much negotiation and great anticipation, the newly built Mason General Hospital proudly opened its doors. Shelton Hospital had been caring for the area’s sick and injured since 1920, and by the 1960’s had encountered a space shortage and was in great need of many upgrades and repairs.

Mason General Hospital (MGH), a part of Public Hospital District No. 1 (PHD No. 1) which later included North Mason Medical Clinic in Belfair, had taken 16 months to build at a cost of $2.5 million. The 55,000 square foot building housed 56 beds and employed 95 people.† Within two years MGH was already expanding its services, increasing its bed capacity and emergency department. Funding for further growth was essential, and in the early 1990’s MGH supported the formation of a charitable Foundation, with Guilds that would organize community fundraising events and establish endowment funds to support equipment needs and include donations from the Hospital’s Auxiliary Gift Shop and Treasures Thrift Stores in downtown Shelton. MGH Foundation’s first ‘Fantasy Forest’ event was held at the Hospital in 1995, and would grow to become its biggest annual fundraiser.

As the community grew, the need to expand services became very apparent, and in 1990 plans were in the works for a $10 million construction project to expand the emergency department, move the front entrance to the north end and remodel other departments. Under the leadership of new CEO Bob Appel, the remodel was completed in time for the Hospital District’s 25th Anniversary in October 1993.

The early 1990’s saw the implementation of a Quality Improvement (QI) program to train staff in continually finding ways to deliver top quality health care. This ongoing program greatly contributed to the Hospital and Clinics’ culture, and to the mission of providing excellence in patient-centered care that has been its hallmark. The extraordinary efforts of staff were demonstrated during a crippling ice storm in 1997.†

In 2001 Mason General Hospital was designated a Level Four Trauma Hospital, and in 2002 established a completely ‘smoke free’ campus. PHD No. 1 purchased Oakland Bay Pediatrics in 2000, and went on to acquire other surrounding clinics over the next decade.

In 2007 North Mason Medical Clinic was taken over by the newly formed Public Hospital District No. 2 and contracted with Harrison Medical Center. Between 2006 and 2012 PHD No. 1 added MGH Eye Clinic, MGH Surgery Clinic, MGH Shelton Family Medicine, MGH Shelton Orthopedics, MGH Mountain View Women’s Health, MGH Family Health, and MGH Ankle & Foot.† By 2014 MGH Olympic Physicians and MGH Hoodsport Family Clinic were brought on board with Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics.††

Major renovations included moving the main entrance and central registration to the South end of the building with two new south parking lots, and moving the ER to the north end. There was also modernization of the Birth Center, renovations to the Lab and Diagnostic Imaging area, a large new cafeteria and an expanded Gift Shop. There were many additional infrastructure changes including new heating and duct work, wiring for new information technology, new hot water heaters and two 1,000-watt emergency generators.† Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics (MGH&FC) has received numerous awards and recognition for new programs and services that are continually being added and improved. In 2008 MGH was nationally recognized as a “Most Wired Rural Hospital” for advances in its Information Technology, and has since received the Most Wired award for ten consecutive years. The electronic medical record (EMR) was introduced in 2014, and soon after that ‘My Mason Health’ gave people access to their own medical records, online. With added community outreach and more of a focus on prevention and coordinated, patientcentered care, MGH&FC has been getting increasingly ‘connected’ with its patients and the community.††

Uniting clinics and services Expanding, remodeling, and increasing services while continuing to deliver excellence in care, our Hospital and Clinics have grown and developed into a nationally accredited, award-winning health care system. Now eleven clinics strong and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, MGH&FC prepares for its next growth spurt with the construction of a new, on-campus medical office building to facilitate care coordination and improve patient access to services. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury and death for children in Washington state. MGH&FC’s Diabetes Prevention Program is helping people achieve healthy (and delicious) lifestyle changes!

Lifestyle Coach to empower people with skills to make lasting lifestyle changes that prevent diabetes. Together, participants work toward losing weight, being more physically active, and managing stress.

“We are excited to offer a proven approach to preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes,” said McGinnis. The Life Coach will inspire small groups to stay motivated and solve problems that get in the way of healthy changes”.

The Diabetes Prevention Program groups meet for 16 sessions during the first 6 months of the program, then once a month for 6 months to maintain healthy lifestyle changes. The Program’s group setting provides a supportive, motivational environment for people who are facing similar challenges and trying to make the same changes.

“Lifestyle changes are much more achievable with the support of a coach and one’s peers,” said McGinnis.

In April, MGH&FC’s Diabetes Wellness Center held a combined Shelton and Allyn Diabetes Support Group Meeting at the Mason Transit Authority’s Community Kitchen in Shelton, inviting anyone in the community out to its first culinary presentation.

Twenty-two participants attended “Creative Cooking with the Dietitians”, where they enjoyed watching a live cooking demonstration and sampling three delicious, meatless dishes prepared by Certified Diabetes Educators Joyce Horton, RD, and Sarah Fulkerson, RD. During the hour-long presentation, Diabetes Wellness Program Coordinator Debbie McGinnis, RN, BSN, CDE, presented an informative overview of how making healthy changes in your life can prevent or greatly help in managing diabetes, making it possible for anyone to live a normal, healthy lifestyle.

The research shows that people with pre-diabetes who made modest changes by losing 5 to 7 percent of their body weight (10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person) reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. “Small changes can make a big difference,” McGinnis added.

Pre-diabetes is identified when your blood sugar level is higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. Currently, forty-five percent of the community have higher-than-normal blood glucose (blood sugar) levels and may develop type 2 diabetes within 3 years if they do not take steps to prevent it.

More than 86 million American adults are pre-diabetic and most of them don’t even know it. Without weight loss, moderate activity and a healthy diet, there is a real risk of developing type 2 diabetes within five years. In an effort to reduce these alarming statistics and promote Exceptional Health in our community, MGH&FC’s Diabetes Wellness Center offers a twelve-month Diabetes Prevention Program to guide people through a lifestyle change that can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Pre-diabetes increases your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Type 2 diabetes can cause blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke and diabetic nerve damage leading to loss of toes, feet or legs.

MGH&FC’s Diabetes Prevention Program engages a supportive, non-judgmental approach to wellness in a small group setting where participants will learn the difference between fad diets or gimmicks and this research-based wellness and weight loss program. grams and other cancer screenings cannot be overstated, and MGH&FC has been proactive in reminding everyone to get their screenings.

The earlier an abnormal test result can be diagnosed, the more options there are for treatment – and better outcomes.

“The mammography technologists in MGH&FC’s Diagnostic Imaging (DI) Department who make sure all the yearly mammogram reminder letters go out, and I make a point of calling women who are past due for their mammograms so they don’t put it off,” said Marcia Stauffer, MGH&FC’s patient navigator.

With prevention and early detection being key, a plan was conceived in 2016 to coordinate care at MGH&FC with a genetic counseling and testing service that would assess and follow up on a patient’s risk for hereditary cancers. The Genetic Support Foundation (GSF) now collaborates with Mason General Hospital and its clinics in preventive, patient-centered care, to assess and control the risk in certain patients with a family history of cancers.

“Some families have an inherited gene mutation that increases their risk for developing certain types of cancer,” said GSF’s Executive Director Katie Stoll, MS, LGC. “In such cases, genetic testing through a blood or saliva test can identify patients at risk, and give them the option of specialized care for early detection and prevention. Analysis of the sample can identify genetic changes that put the patient at higher than average risk of developing breast, ovarian, prostate and colon cancers,” Stoll added. About 12 percent of all women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, but for women with a genetic susceptibility, the risk may be as high as 80 percent, with a greater chance of developing cancer at a younger age.

The process can begin at the doctor’s office, or when a woman 40 or older comes in for her yearly mammogram and completes a questionnaire about her personal and family medical history. This information is used to determine if a patient should be referred for genetic counseling.

conferencing session between the patient and a genetic counselor in a private, relaxed atmosphere,” said Rosa Gonzalez, Surgery Clinic manager. “The counselor goes over the patient’s family medical history and explains the process, potential benefits and limitations of testing, how the results are used, and answers any questions they may have.”

Knowing what to expect, the patient can make a well-informed decision about whether to move forward with testing. When test results become available, another appointment with patient and counselor is set up to share the analysis and proceed with a personalized care plan.

Genetic testing enables a plan of care that can begin early enough to allow the patient more treatment options. A younger patient at increased risk for breast cancer may opt for increased screening including yearly mammograms and breast MRIs, getting tested every 6 months so changes can be closely monitored. Some highrisk women may even consider a risk-reducing mastectomy. A coordinated care plan can include the patient’s primary care provider, ongoing genetic counseling for the patient and family members, diagnostic imaging and surgical consultation, and MGH&FC’s Patient Navigation services.

The availability of genetic counseling and testing brings another aspect of excellence in coordinated, patient-centered care to Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics. With prevention at the forefront, MGH&FC strives to maintain continued on page 11…

Patient navigation can also guide those who need financial assistance. This can cover insurance deductibles or copays, childcare costs, and mileage reimbursement related to treatment. The Karen Hilburn Cancer Fund (KHCF) is a chapter of MGH Foundation that helps uninsured and underinsured women in Mason County with the costs associated with their cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The Fund provides help with everything from screenings to gas cards for treatmentrelated travel. It also pays for genetic counseling and testing if a patient’s insurance does not cover this. The Hilburn Fund had a record year in 2017 for helping patients in need.

KHCF also sponsors the Health Events hosted by Mason General Hospital, where twice a year the Fund provides free mammograms to 50 women in Mason County who are uninsured or underinsured for these screenings. “The goal is to ensure all women in the community are getting screened,” said Stauffer, who helps coordinate the semiannual events.

Stroke Awareness: Time is Brain!

In the United States, stroke is the fifth leading

cause of death and the leading cause of disability. Up to 80 percent of strokes are preventable, and outcomes are dramatically improved when a stoke is recognized early and medical treatment is immediate. The past 20 years have shown a significantly higher stroke survival rate and reduction in disabilities with advances in treatment and quick action to treat stroke.

Time is brain When a stroke occurs “time is brain” and being able to recognize the signs can get the patient to the hospital much faster for medical treatment and better results. A good way to remember the signs to look for is B E F A S T.

BE–FAST B Balance. Ask the person to walk in a straight line and see if their balance is off.

E Eyes. Ask them if their vision is blurred, or have them read something.

F Face. Ask the person to smile.

Does one side of the face droop?

A Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?

T Time. If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately, time is brain.

Mason General Hospital is a designated Acute Stroke Ready Hospital, certified by the Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. In partnership with the Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, MGH coordinates every stroke case with St. Peter’s neurology stroke team and collaborates with them regularly to maintain the most up-to-date practices.

What is a stroke?

A stroke is a brain attack that occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery or a blood vessel breaks, interrupting blood flow to an area of the brain and causing brain cells to die. There are two major types of stroke – ischemic and hemorrhagic. Ischemic strokes are the most common and occur when an artery in the brain is blocked by a blood clot or plaque. A transient ischemic attack (TIA), also known as a “mini stroke”, is a small, temporary blockage that resolves itself – but medical treatment should still be sought, as a TIA can precede a more serious event. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain forms an aneurism that bursts and bleeds out.

Sustained, high blood pressure can weaken blood vessels enough for this to happen.

Also note the time when any of the symptoms first appear. This will greatly aid the medical staff in determining the course of treatment.

9-1-1 will dispatch an ambulance while MGH staff mobilize to receive the patient in the Emergency Department (ED), Diagnostic Imaging (DI) and the Lab.

Stroke: Call 911 immediately!

Because stroke injures the brain, you may not realize that you are having a stroke.

The people around you might not know it either. Your family, friends, or neighbors may think you are confused. You may not be able to call 911 on your own. That’s why everyone should know the signs of stroke - and know how to act fast.

Don’t wait for the symptoms to improve or worsen. If you believe you are having a stroke - or someone you know is having a stroke - call 911 immediately. Making the decision to call for medical help can make the difference in avoiding a lifelong disability.

“A lot can be done to prepare for the patient’s arrival at the hospital,” said MGH&FC Stroke Coordinator Kristyn Criss, RN team manager.

“Treatment begins on route to MGH when ‘CODE STROKE’ is initiated by EMS. We can then engage our neurology partners at Providence St. Peter Hospital, who are available to consult with our emergency physicians around the clock.”

Upon arrival at MGH, a CT scan is immediately taken and evaluated by the radiologist, who consults with the attending ER physician and the neurologist at St. Peter who assesses the patient via tele-stroke conferencing.

The type of stroke and course of treatment is determined by this collaborative team.

Patients will be quickly and safely transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital for further care or advanced neurological treatment, if required.

Each year Mason General Hospital’s Emergency Department treats approximately 60 patients for stroke. “It is so important not to wait or ignore even minor symptoms,” Criss said. “Many people are unaware of the consequences of delaying treatment for a stroke.” Criss reports that she regularly reviews patient cases where treatment options were limited because of failure to seek emergency medical attention. “Seeking treatment immediately is essential to saving lives and improving patient outcomes.”

Reduce your risk for stroke now!

You can greatly reduce the possibility of a stroke by understanding your risk factors and adopting a lifestyle for prevention. Know your family history of stroke and contributing conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and sleep apnea.

Diabetes, circulation problems and hormone imbalances can be other contributors. Go over your risk factors with your primary care provider to come up with a lifestyle plan that may include: not smoking, drinking less, maintaining a healthy body weight, watching what you eat and being more active.

MGH&FC honors its Volunteers!

Culinary & Nutrition Services, MGH Foundation and Development Offices, and Treasures Stores, to name a few. They perform general office duties, customer service and sales, educational assistance, compassionate care and patient companionship in acute care settings.

Volunteer Applications A number of adult and junior volunteer opportunities are available for individuals who would like to offer their time and help.

Junior Volunteers must be at least 15 years old and have an overall 2.5 grade point average.

Adult Volunteers must complete a disclosure statement and criminal background check, as well as set up an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator and do a Volunteer Orientation.

This year’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

was held at Mason General Hospital during National Volunteer Week in April. The Hospital District honored 71 highly-valued volunteers who put in many hours of their time in 2017, performing a wide variety of functions to assist MGH&FC in its mission to put Patients First and to deliver excellent health care. Among them, 30 dedicated volunteers were given the President’s Volunteer Service Award for their extraordinary contribution.

“All our volunteers made an outstanding effort in 2017,” remarked Lonnie Hatman, MGH&FC Volunteer Coordinator. “With a total of 9,709 hours logged in, this year’s group exceeded the previous year’s total by 1,000 hours – with 10 fewer volunteers!”

“For various reasons – moving away, getting jobs, family obligations, etc. – we lost more

volunteers in 2017 than we gained,” admitted Hatman. “But we more than made up for it with the exceedingly high number of hours put in,” he added.

The Big Climb

Classes & Workshops First Aid/CPR/AED courses in July & September

For the 6th year, MGH&FC’s climbing team, Scrambled Legs and Achin’ made the “Big Climb” at Seattle’s Columbia Center in March. Participants can either run up the 69-floor stairwell in a timed race, or walk up, untimed. The Washington/Alaska Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) hosts the annual event with all proceeds to benefit the LLS mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Cancer Wellness Workshops in July & August

MGH&FC and Harmony Hill Retreat Center continue to offer a series of Cancer Wellness Workshops that meet every second Wednesday of the month from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in the Pershing Meeting Room at MGH. Featuring various topics and speakers, the Cancer Wellness Program is free and open to anyone with a cancer diagnosis, those in survivorship, their companions, and caregivers.

Conciencia del ACV: ¡El tiempo es cerebro!

En los Estados Unidos, el ACV (accidente

cerebrovascular) es la quinta causa principal de muerte y la principal causa de discapacidad.

Hasta un 80 por ciento de los ACV se podrían prevenir, y los resultados son drásticamente mejores cuando el ACV se reconoce enseguida y se da tratamiento médico inmediato. En los últimos 20 años, el índice de supervivencia al ACV y la reducción de las discapacidades han sido significativamente mayores gracias a avances en los tratamientos y medidas de atención rápidas.

El Mason General Hospital (MGH) es un hospital preparado para el ACV agudo (Acute Stroke Ready Hospital), certificado por la Joint Commission (Comisión Conjunta) y por la American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (Asociación Cardíaca Estadounidense/Asociación Estadounidense del ACV). En asociación con el Providence St. Peter Hospital de Olympia, el MGH coordina cada caso de ACV con el equipo neurológico de ACV de St. Peter y colabora con ellos periódicamente para mantener las prácticas más actualizadas.

¿Qué es un ACV? Un ACV es un ataque cerebral que se produce cuando el riego sanguíneo a una zona del cerebro se ve interrumpido porque un coágulo sanguíneo bloquea una arteria o un vaso sanguíneo se rompe, y eso causa la muerte de células cerebrales. Hay dos tipos principales de ACV: isquémico y hemorrágico.

Los ACV isquémicos son el tipo más común y se producen cuando una arteria del cerebro se bloquea debido a un coágulo de sangre o placa. Un ataque isquémico transitorio (AIT), también conocido como “mini ACV” es un pequeño bloqueo temporal que se resuelve solo, si bien se debe, de todos modos, obtener atención médica, ya que un AIT puede preceder a un episodio más grave. Un ACV hemorrágico se produce cuando en un vaso sanguíneo del cerebro se forma un aneurisma que se rompe y deja salir la sangre. Una hipertensión sostenida puede debilitar los vasos sanguíneos lo suficiente como para que eso suceda.

puede hacer que el paciente llegue al hospital para recibir tratamiento médico mucho más rápido y mejoren así sus resultados. Estos son los signos que debe comprobar: Pida a la persona que B Equilibrio. camine en línea recta y fíjese si hay un problema de equilibrio.

Pregúntele si tiene la vista O Ojos. borrosa o pídale que lea algo.

Rostro. Pida a la persona que sonría. ¿Nota que un lado de la cara parezca caído?

Pida a la persona que B Brazos. levante ambos brazos. ¿Tiende uno de los brazos a bajar?

Pida a la persona que H Habla. repita una frase sencilla. ¿Habla de manera extraña o arrastra las palabras?

Si observa cualquiera T Tiempo. de estos signos, llame al 9-1-1 inmediatamente.

Note también el momento en que hayan empezado los signos. Será de gran ayuda al personal médico para determinar el modo de tratamiento. El servicio de 9-1-1 enviará una ambulancia y el personal del MGH se movilizará para recibir al paciente en el Departamento de Emergencias (DE), en Diagnóstico por Imágenes (DI) y en el laboratorio.

“Se pueden hacer muchos preparativos para la llegada del paciente al hospital,” dice Kristyn Criss, coordinadora de ACV de MGH&FC y directora del equipo de enfermeros matriculados. El tratamiento comienza en camino al MGH, cuando el personal de emergencias inicia un “CÓDIGO ACV”. En ese punto podemos solicitar la colaboración de nuestros asociados de neurología del Providence St. Peter Hospital, que están disponibles para consultas de nuestros médicos del emergencias a toda hora”.

Al llegar el paciente al MGH, se realiza inmediatamente una TC. El radiólogo la evalúa y consulta con el médico de emergencias que atiende y con el neurólogo de St. Peter, que evalúa al paciente mediante una teleconferencia para ACV. Este equipo de colaboradores determina el tipo de ACV y el tratamiento a administrar. Se transporta a los pacientes de manera rápida y segura al Providence St. Peter Hospital para que reciban atención adicional o tratamiento neurológico avanzado , de ser necesario.

El Departamento de Emergencias del Mason General Hospital trata a aproximadamente 60 pacientes con ACV al año. “Es importante no tardar ni ignorar los síntomas, por menores que parezcan, dice Criss. Muchas personas no son conscientes de las consecuencias de demorar el tratamiento en un caso de ACV”. Criss dice que ve habitualmente casos de pacientes en los que las opciones de tratamiento se vieron limitadas porque no se obtuvo atención médica de emergencia.

“Obtener tratamiento de inmediato es fundamental para salvar vidas y mejorar los resultados para los pacientes”.

¡Empiece ya mismo a reducir su riesgo de sufrir un ACV! Puede reducir considerablemente la probabilidad de sufrir un ACV si comprender sus factores de riesgo y adopta un estilo de vida para la prevención. Tenga presente antecedentes familiares de ACV y factores contribuyentes tales como la hipertensión, los altos niveles de colesterol, las enfermedades cardíacas y la apnea del sueño. La diabetes, los problemas circulatorios y los desequilibrios hormonales también pueden contribuir. Repase sus factores de riesgo con su proveedor de atención primaria para elaborar un plan para su estilo de vida, que podrá incluir no fumar, beber menos alcohol, mantener un peso corporal sano, vigilar lo que come y mantenerse más activo.
