Prestigious recognition as an Acute Stroke-Ready Hospital – One of the first in the nation In early February MGH&FC received word from the Joint Commission, which accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States, that it has earned the Disease-Specific Care Certification for Acute Stroke-Ready Hospital. This certification recognizes hospitals equipped to treat stroke patients with timely, evidence-based care prior to transferring them to a primary or comprehensive stroke center. MGH&FC is the first in the nation to be certified by the

availability of telemedicine technology.

“For certification, the Joint Commission looks at the speed of care and patient outcomes,” said Sabrina Nelson, director of Emergency Department and Trauma Services at MGH&FC. “Speed of care is important as ‘time is brain’. Without losing critical time, a stroke patient can be examined via our Telestroke video link by the on-call neurologist, any time of the day or night. Through this telemedicine approach, everyone on the care team is either in the room or on the computer monitor with real-time access to the patient, their medical records and test results, so treatment can begin immediately, facilitating the best possible recovery.”

P -U-R -P -L-E A new way to understand infant crying Many new parents are troubled by their

baby’s inconsolable crying when they don’t understand the reason for it. The Birth Center at Mason General Hospital wants parents to know there is an increased crying stage in early infancy that is part of a baby’s normal development. It doesn’t signify that something is wrong and shouldn’t be cause for alarm when the baby is not tired, hungry, wet, or in pain or distress. This normal crying spans a period of time that begins at roughly two weeks old, peaking at the two-month mark, and tapering off at four to five months. The phase is termed ‘PURPLE crying’ – and each letter of the word explains a normal type of crying that babies experience and outgrow.

quality Don’t sleep with a stroke If you have minor stroke symptoms during the middle of the night, you probably won’t know it. When you wake up, though, you may notice weakness in an arm or leg, double vision or partial loss of your visual field. Your speech may be slurred or you may feel a bit confused and unable to find the words you’re trying to use. These are all signs that a stroke could have happened during your sleep. They require prompt medical attention.

Other ways to protect your eyes A good way to protect your eyes from age-related

diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration is to eat a healthy diet that includes 5 to 10 servings a day of dark green and brightly colored fruits and vegetables.

Other things you can do include: avoid cigarette smoke, wear eye protection when you’re in the sun, wear safety glasses or goggles when they are recommended for work or recreational activities and

have regular dilated eye examinations with an eye care professional.

TIA gives stroke warning A transient ischemic attack (TIA), also known as a mini-

stroke, presents with the symptoms of a stroke but lasts only a few minutes or a few hours. It is a warning that requires the same emergency action required of a stroke.

TIA symptoms will develop into a stroke within 2 days for 5 percent of patients; within 90 days for 11 percent of patients; within one year for 14 percent of patients; and within two years for 20 percent of patients.

gathered on the stairs in MGH for a team photo prior to participating in Seattle’s “Big Climb” at the Columbia Center on Sunday, March 20, 2016. The Columbia Center stands as the second tallest building west of the Mississippi River at 788 vertical feet. It rises 69 floors, and takes 1,311 steps to reach the highly-acclaimed observation deck (end of the climb), with breathtaking views of the entire Puget Sound region. This is the fourth year MGH&FC has entered a team. The Washington/Alaska Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) hosts the annual event with all proceeds going towards the LLS mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

Nearly 6,000 people are scheduled to be a part of the challenge. Registration sold out in a record-breaking 8 hours and will raise nearly $3 million toward a cure. Participants have the choice of either running up the stairwell (in a timed race) or walking up (untimed). The average walking time is about 20 minutes. Each team member is asked to raise at least $100 for the climb.

Michael Keep, M.D., was appointed in early January as Medical Director of Clinics.

This is a part-time leadership position allowing Dr. Keep to continue to spend the majority of his time delivering patient care in the Clinic and Hospital settings. In this new role, Dr. Keep will work in partnership with Clinic administrators, making joint decisions relating to operational matters affecting the Clinics. In addition, Dr. Keep will work closely with Mark Schlauderaff, M.D., on quality initiatives impacting the Clinics. “This key leadership will also actively participate in the ongoing strategic planning process for our District,” said Eric Moll, CEO, upon the announcement. “I look forward to Dr. Keep being a part of our leadership team.

He has proven himself to be a strong advocate for the patient, deeply committed to the profession, and an excellent communicator.”

Pediatric Disaster Workshop in May Region 3 Emergency Preparedness Healthcare Coalition is sponsoring and MGH&FC is hosting a four and a half hour community “Pediatric Disaster Workshop” on Thursday May 26, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Pershing and Ellinor meeting rooms at MGH. The course objective is to emphasize the importance of pediatric disaster planning, and the special considerations needed in implementation. Quality care awards

ACR accreditation is the gold standard in the nation’s health care industry. It grants accreditation to facilities nationwide in ten modalities. The certification process involves a comprehensive review of the entire modality’s system, which includes staff, policies, procedures and scanning protocols, in addition to the quality of images produced.

ACR accreditation is given to health care facilities nationwide who score high in their diagnostic imaging programs. “This is great news – not just for our dedicated staff whose hard work and diligence made it possible, but for our entire community, who continue to benefit from excellence in care,” said Michael Gray, MGH&FC’s director of diagnostic imaging. “I am proud of the recognition our department continues to receive, showing how a hospital system like ours can rate among the best in the country.”

An active member of the Foundation for the last 17 years, as well as chairperson for Fantasy Forest, Karen has held a seat on the Foundation’s Membership Committee, Treasurers Committee, and Community Relations Committee. She has also been a member of Shel-Toa Orthopedic Guild, and a local Chapter PEO. Karen’s most important work, however, was founding the Karen Hilburn Breast Cancer Fund in 2003, a chapter of MGH Foundation that helps uninsured or underinsured women in our community with the costs of their diagnoses and treatment for breast cancer. Her Fund soon expanded to include cervical cancer treatment, and to-date the Karen Hilburn Breast & Cervical Cancer Fund has helped an average of 15 women per year.

“I am honored to receive this award, and thankful for the many donations and successful fundraising events that have helped more than 180 women over the past 12 years,” said Karen. “It is a privilege to do this kind of work for the Hospital and community we love.”

Karen’s husband, Scott Hilburn, is a Hospital Board commissioner, a retired local businessman, and a former mayor of Shelton. They have five sons and eight grandchildren, whom Karen lovingly refers to as “the lights of my life”. Her memberships and volunteer work also include being a Cub Scout leader for her sons, and a Deacon and Elder at her church.

2nd Annual Tour de Mason Lake The 2nd Annual Tour de Mason Lake – a Karen Hilburn Breast & Cervical Cancer Fund (KHBCCF) event – is set for Saturday June 11, 2016. Check-in is at 7:45 a.m. in the parking lot of El Puerto de Angeles (across from Shelton McDonald’s) and the Event starts from there at 8:30. The cost is $40 per person. The course is either a 20, 32 or 44-mile circuit around Mason Lake, with medium rolling hills through beautifully scenic, rural Mason County. Snacks and water will be served at the 20-mile mark. A cold beer for each adult rider and Olympic Mountain Ice Cream for all will be served at the finish line back at El Puerto de Angeles. All proceeds support the Karen Hilburn Breast & Cervical Cancer Fund that helps uninsured and underinsured Mason County women with the cost of breast and cervical cancer diagnoses and treatment. becoming a Certified Safe Sleep Leader, the Hospital must implement the use of ‘wearable blankets’ – replacing traditional blankets in the nursery. “With this certification, we will become part of a program to reduce Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID), also known as Crib Death,” said Marcia Rohlik, R.N., M.S.N, director of The Birth Center at MGH&FC. The Birth Center has been teaching and encouraging new mothers to use safe sleep procedures since the late 1990s.

In contrast with earlier beliefs supporting babies being placed in a prone position (on their tummies) to sleep, newer studies reveal that putting babies to sleep in the supine position (on their backs) showed a decline in crib death – which remains the third-leading cause of infant mortality.

Between 1992 and 2001 the SIDS rate dropped dramatically after recommendations changed to back sleeping. During that decade

SIDS in the U.S. declined a startling 53 percent, and has remained fairly constant ever since. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in recent years started a SIDS registry to monitor infant mortality trends related to crib death; and the American Academy of Pediatrics developed the ‘Back to Sleep’ campaign, with recommendations for supine positioning of infants under a year, and infant care practices to reduce the risk of SIDS. Reducing use of soft bedding, loose blankets, and other things in infant sleep areas that can cover a baby’s face is the next step in reducing SIDS and SUIDS. It is only recently that the national certification for Safe Sleep Hospitals has been available. As part of this campaign, MGH’s Certified Safe Sleep accreditation goal leads the way in patientcentered, preventive care, modeling appropriate infant ‘safe sleep’ behavior by swaddling babies in wearable blankets, and providing safe sleep education to parents.

MGHF’s Quality Care Open Golf Tournament held last June was a

tremendous success. More than $85,000 in cash and in-kind contributions were raised. Proceeds from this tournament funded the purchase of a Spot Vision Screening Tool for MGH Oakland Bay Pediatrics, two EKG machines for MGH Olympic Physicians and a Pediatric Glidescope with camera for the Emergency Department. In addition the Golf Committee allocated funds to go towards the purchase of a Coagulation Analyzer for the Laboratory Department. 2016 Hospital Board of Commissioners elected Public Hospital District No. 1, the governing body of

Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics – MGH Ankle & Foot, MGH Eye Clinic, MGH Family Health, MGH Hoodsport Family Clinic, MGH Mountain View Women’s Health, MGH Oakland Bay Pediatrics, MGH Olympic Physicians, MGH Shelton Scott Hilburn Family Medicine, MGH Shelton Orthopedics, MGH Surgery Clinic, and President MGH Walk-In Clinic recently announced its officers on the Board of Commissioners for 2016.

Scott Hilburn, Shelton, was elected president of the three-person board; Don Wilson Secretary Don Wilson, Potlatch, is secretary; and Nancy Trucksess, Shelton, is a trustee.

The Board of Commissioners meets at 8 a.m. in the Ellinor Room at Mason General Hospital every second and fourth Tuesday of the month (except holidays).

That fishy look in your eyes Do you find yourself blinking continually to relieve a gritty, itchy

irritation in your eyes? That’s a common condition known as dry eye. It’s caused in part by dehydration and, according to one study, by not eating enough foods high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Data from more than 32,000 women enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study found that those eating larger quantities of fatty fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel were less likely than others to suffer from dry eye. Subjects who ate fish two to four times a week had an 18 percent reduced risk; those eating five to six servings a week had a 66 percent lower risk than non-fish eaters. Fatty fish are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids.

CT scan helps determine stroke risk

For patients who have had a TIA or non-disabling stroke, one study found that CT scanning was an effective way of determining future stroke risk.

For patients whose baseline CT scan revealed acute ischemia (poor blood flow), the risk was high (10.6 percent). This risk was even higher for those who had chronic (long-term) ischemia (17.4 percent) or microangiopathy (small areas of damaged blood vessels) (17.6 percent).

Lowering LDL: Combo Rx works Survivors of heart attacks or strokes and persons with severe

cardiovascular disease are often prescribed cholesterol-lowering statin drugs in an effort to get their LDL cholesterol to 70 mg/ dL or lower. About 15 percent of patients are unable to do this without suffering undesirable side effects. In such cases, adding a medication that works in a different way may be the answer.

The IMPROVE-IT study found that the combination of ezetimibe (Zetia) and a statin medication can safely bring LDL levels down to 50 mg/dL and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Newer cholesterol-lowering drugs, known as PCSK9 inhibitors, can bring LDL down even lower, and short-term studies indicate that this might further reduce the risk of death from heart attack or stroke.

Radon is major public health issue Exposure to radon, a

gas that rises from the soil into homes and workplaces, kills more Americans than drunk driving, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

It’s the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and is particularly hazardous when combined with smoking.

The Federal Radon Action Plan, announced in 2011, encourages Americans to have their homes tested and, if necessary, treated to reduce radon levels. By example, the federal government is testing all government-owned property–including seven million residences.
