Low thyroid causes weight gain, but treatment doesn’t take it off

An underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism, causes a slowed metabolism and

weight gain (usually about 5 to 10 pounds). But if you’re counting on treatment of this disorder to reverse this weight gain for you, you are out of luck.

Treatment with levothyroxine restored normal thyroid levels but was not associated with any significant weight loss in most patients, according to a study presented at a meeting of the American Thyroid Association (San Juan, Puerto Rico, October 16-20, 2013).

Other studies have found that many patients continue to struggle with weight gain despite decreased food intake and increased exercise. This may be because of a lower metabolic set point.

get moving The Conklins make a Mother’s Day Dash

What was supposed to be fibroid tumor surgery changed dramatically for Shelton resident Shelby Conklin when, during the procedure, her surgeon discovered ovarian cancer. The cancer was removed with the tumors, and surgery was followed by six rounds of chemotherapy.

That was in 1997. She remained cancer-free until 2009, when the cancer recurred. Six more rounds of chemotherapy and another surgery followed – but today, Shelby Conklin is cancer free.

To feel better after her recovery Shelby wanted to lose weight, and so did her husband, Jef. They accomplished their personal weight loss goals by using the app, MyFitnessPal. “I went kicking and screaming, because I didn’t want to eat less and move more. But ‘My Fitness Pal’ made it easy, and Jef was doing it too. We both ate within our calorie count for months, and lost a lot of weight,” she said.

The couple also added daily walking to their routine and began participating in the annual SummRUN, which benefits the Marsha Rivkin Cancer Center. The Rivkin Center was established by Marsha Rivkin’s family after she died of ovarian cancer. Two years ago, the Conklins and their children established the “Mother’s Day Dash” in Shelton, which also benefits the Rivkin Center. The 4-mile Walk/Run is held every year on the second Sunday of May – Mother’s Day Jef and Shelby Conklin.

“After recovering from cancer, the exercise and eating right is emotionally healing, and being able to walk as a survivor gives you a sense of well-being, and of hope. In the SummRUN, we honor family members who didn’t survive.

“Those who walk as survivors get a strand of beads for every year they’ve survived. Last year, I had a mound of beads around my neck that I know gave other women hope, just continued on page 15...

High blood sugar predicts dementia

A study of dementia patients in the Puget Sound-Seattle area found that persons with high blood sugar levels were more likely to develop dementia even if they did not have diabetes.

Special injury risks for women Women who are used to working out can and should remain physically active during pregnancy. Because of changes in body weight, shape and metabolism, however, it may be necessary to alter the usual routine in order to avoid injuries. The best plan is to discuss exercise with your doctor.

Women are also more vulnerable to workout injuries during their menstrual periods as a result of changes in hormones that increase the looseness of joints. Generally, because of differences in anatomy, women have a higher risk of injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee. As a result, they should exercise care when participating in sports that require twisting and turning leg motions, such as skiing, basketball and tennis.

caring Despite media hype – regular mammograms do save lives She went on to say that women in their 20’s and 30’s should have clinical breast exams every three years and should practice breast self-awareness (BSA). By doing monthly BSA exams a woman knows what is normal for her own breasts and is able to recognize signs of change.

MGH&FC’s Diagnostic Imaging Department provides services for breast health that include screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds, needle biopsies, and surgeries.

Appointments are available at the Hospital Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and two Women’s Health Events are held annually with free screenings available to women who are uninsured or underinsured for mammograms. Appointments for screenings can be scheduled weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. by calling MGH&FC’s Diagnostic Imaging Department at (360) 427-9590.

Recently there has been a lot of confusion in the media regarding at what age women should begin having mammography screenings, and how often. The American Cancer Society and the American College of Radiology continue, however, to recommend that all women begin breast cancer screenings at age 40, and repeat them annually as long as they are healthy.

This is the approach followed by MGH&FC’s Patient Navigator, Karry Trout, BA, RT(R)(M)CBPN-IC, and the rest of the Hospital’s mammography team including Mozell Snider, Jody Olsen, and Shawn Peters. All four women are Board Certified Radiological Technologists and Registered Mammographers.

The American College of Radiology website states, “According to the National Cancer Institute, since mammography screening became widespread in the early 1990’s, the U.S. breast cancer death rate, unchanged for the previous 50 years, has dropped well over 30 percent. Every major medical organization with expertise in breast cancer care, including the Society of Breast Imaging, continues to recommend that women begin receiving annual mammograms at age 40.”

Digital breast imaging – which is available at MGH – provides detailed scans of breast tissue which make mammograms the best way to discover breast irregularities, especially in younger women.

Trout said that “belief they are free from risk” or “fear of the process” stops many women from having annual mammograms.

“The risk of breast cancer increases with age, and heredity is only responsible for 10 to 15% of cases. That’s the false sense of security women have – where there is no family history,” Trout added.

Relay for Life raises money to help prevent, find a cure for, and to educate people about cancer. The event is 24 hours long. It begins at 4 p.m. on Friday and ends at 4 p.m. Saturday. Opening ceremonies is at 7 p.m., beginning with the “Survivor Lap”, in which any cancer survivor can participate. Mason General Hospital Foundation’s Arts Commission recently welcomed new members to the volunteer organization. Most members join the Arts Commission to work on the Annual Students’ Art Project, from which 40 art works by students – grades first through twelfth – within Public Hospital District No.1 are selected for installation in patient rooms in Mason General Hospital.

Currently, many of these works are on temporary display in some corridors and public areas of the Hospital.

The new members join continuing members Darryl Cleveland, Paula Ferrera, Carla Jones, Deviona Jones, Mary Anne Munson, Lin Reber, and Peg Stock Penney. This summer’s Arts Commission project includes reinstalling all of the art which was stored during the addition of the new surgery wing and renovation of several Hospital departments. “We plan to have the Art reinstalled by early fall,” said Peg Stock Penney, one of the founding members of the Arts Commission. “The absences of these art works have been greatly missed.”

Fantasy Forest 2014 Event Look for Fantasy Forest updates in the August issue of SCOPE!

Sixteen Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics employees, their families and friends raised more than $7,000 for Seattle’s “Big Climb” that took place in March at the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle. This is the second year MGH&FC has had a team. The Washington/Alaska Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) hosted the event. All proceeds went towards the LLS mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

The MGH&FC team joined nearly 6,000 people who rose to the challenge of climbing 69 flights of stairs in the highest skyscraper in Seattle. Participants had the choice of either running up the stairwell (in a timed race) or walking up (untimed). The MGH&FC team – called Scrambled Legs and Achin’ was evenly split between those who chose to be either racers or walkers. In all, the team climbed 1,311 steps, or 788 feet of vertical elevation, to reach the top. Yoga can cause injuries, too

Yoga is often presented as an ultra-safe workout that increases flexibility

and reduces the risk of injury. While all of that may be true, persons who practice yoga suffer injuries, too, including wrist sprains and hip problems.

Trainers advise against putting excess weight on the wrists and reinforcing them with support when possible. Also avoid pushing your body into a position that is painful and feels unnatural.

Patients often have tobacco exposure Children brought to an emergency department with asthma

symptoms often show signs of exposure to tobacco smoke even when caregivers report no such exposure. For most patients, tobacco smoke is a trigger for reduced air flow and increased responsiveness of airway cells.

Even though tobacco exposure in the home or in an automobile was reported in only 35.1 percent of cases, cotinine (a metabolite of nicotine) was more frequently found in the blood (56.1 percent) and in the saliva (79.6 percent of cases).

Thyroid symptoms attributed to stress

Hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland) frequently causes a rapid and irregular heartbeat. This may be perceived by both patient and doctor as a possible heart problem, but when heart tests come back normal, the tendency too often is to write it off as stress.

Hyperthyroidism also has a tendency to create a heavier menstrual flow and difficulty becoming pregnant. These are seen as reproductive problems and may even result in some kind of interventional procedure before the thyroid abnormality is discovered.

The antioxidant case for red wine Research has consistently found that persons consuming low to moderate levels of alcohol have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

The protective effect of red wine is even greater, presumably because of the high content of phenolics and other antioxidants.

Excessive alcohol consumption (more than three drinks a day) is unquestionably harmful, increasing the risk of hypertension, stroke and coronary artery disease.
