Saving babies and new mothers is DiDonna’s mission of passion MGH&FC’s Director of Education and Learning Center Tom DiDonna, R.N., MSN, D.H.Sc – What he does outside of his regular job.

For the past 10 years, teaching, volunteering and ‘giving back’ have been a way of life for Dr. Tom DiDonna. In his travels to resourcepoor countries he teaches midwives and birth attendants how to save the lives of babies and new mothers through his volunteer work with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

After returning from a two-week trip to the African countries of Kenya and Ghana this past summer, Dr. DiDonna talked about his volunteer work helping ro achieve two of the World Health Organization’s “Millennium Goals”, which include “reducing or eliminating unnecessary deaths in infants and children worldwide” and “reducing maternal mortality in childbirth”.

The mortality rates of infants and young women in childbirth are extraordinarily high in resource-poor countries and are preventable in many cases with a small amount of knowledge and skills on the part of birth attendants. Dr. DiDonna also is a longtime volunteer of “Operation Smile”, which is an international foundation that provides free surgical repairs of severe cleft palates and cranio-facial disorders in infants and children in resource-poor countries.

attendants to recognize early signs of abnormal breathing (asphyxia) in newly born infants and to intervene with simple and effective steps to help the baby breathe. Asphyxia related deaths are common in poor countries and are preventable. Helping “Babies Breathe” is a program formulated by the AAP, and Dr. DiDonna is an international master trainer and has trained birth attendants in Jamaica, Guatemala, Panama, Haiti, Philippines, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Kenya, Ghana and Rwanda. He has also trained physicians and nurses in the United States who then went on to many other regions of the world providing the “Helping Babies Breathe” skills.

Dr. DiDonna’s teaching has given MGH&FC a name globally. A couple of examples include a Moroccan physician, Dr. Younnes, and an attendant who traveled to the United States and were hosted by Dr. DiDonna and received the “Helping Babies Breathe” training at the MGH&FC Learning Center last year. The Hospital’s administrative and general staff was very warm and welcoming to them. Dr. Younnes has since utilized the “Helping Babies Breathe” techniques and saved the lives of a few infants. Two birth attendants from South Africa traveled to Kenya to receive the Helping Babies Breathe program offered by Dr. DiDonna this summer.

“In resource-poor countries, the leading cause of death in new mothers is bleeding from childbirth,” added Dr. DiDonna. “Once again, we teach the midwives and birth attendants a very simple procedure that will reduce or stop the bleeding. This allows the mother more time to travel outside her area for further medical treatment.” He teaches the midwives and birth attendants the skills, provides the equipment, and teaches them to teach others. This assures capacity-building locally so improvements in mortality are sustainable upon his departure. By teaching to teach, the lifesaving lessons can be passed on to a whole region.

Severe clefts are common in resource-poor countries due to malnutrition of childbearing aged women. It is not uncommon that in these regions, babies are born with severe, life threatening clefts and facial deformities. The volunteers serving “Operation Smile” offer surgical remedies to correct the cleft palates and facial deformities giving infants and children back their smile, their human-ness, their dignity, and their lives. When a cleft palate is left untreated, infants are unable to feed properly, which results in malnutrition and even death. If they survive, these children are socially ostracized, and very often abandoned. Infants and children who receive the surgery have high postsurgical complication rates which results in significant threats to their lives. MGH Family Health Physician Chris Penoyar, D.O., started winning medals in the Washington State Senior Games ten years ago, and added two gold medals to his collection this summer when he took first in his age division for the shot put and discus throw.

Dr. Chris Penoyar competes in the standing long jump at the 2013 Washington State Senior Games. At a distance of 7’ 2”, he won in his age category by ¾ of an inch.

Track and field events were held in July at Tumwater High School, where Dr. Penoyar’s wins qualified him to attend the National Senior Games. Even though he chose not to participate this year, he won gold at the Nationals four years ago in Pasadena, California. Only the top three or four competitors in each age group advance to Nationals.

Come to the Wellness & Resource Fair The City of Shelton, which was recently recognized by the Association of Washington Cities as a “WellCity,” is partnering with Mason County Emergency Communications (MACECOM), Mason Transit Authority, Mason County Public Health, and Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics to host the Shelton Wellness and Resource Fair on Thursday, October 17, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shelton Civic Center. The purpose of this event is for local vendors to provide information on various resources available in our community that relate to health and wellness, such as: healthy eating, physical activity, stress management, employment benefits, illness prevention, chronic disease management, and emotional/mental well-being.

If track and field isn’t your sport, you can still participate in the Senior Games. “The games are all about variety, and to help seniors stay active. If you don’t have a sport, you can learn to do something. We had a 92 year-old swimmer this year in the 100 meter – and he beat me. That was pretty cool,” said Dr. Penoyar.

According to Senior Games organizers, the purpose of the Senior Games is to keep seniors healthy, and with so many events to choose from, finding a favorite is easy. “The Games include tennis, cycling, swimming, track & field, shuffleboard, ping pong, dancing, and more. There is very little excuse not to participate,” said Dr. Penoyar.

“The Senior Games help maintain activity and give you something to do. You don’t have to be a hardcore competitor – it’s about having fun,” said Dr. Penoyar.

Vaccine leads to drop in hpv rate Introduced in 2006, the vaccine to protect women and girls from HPV infection and cervical cancer is already showing striking results. The infection rate for HPV strains linked to cervical cancer dropped from 7.2 percent in 2006 to 3.6 percent in 2010 among American girls age 14 to 19, according to a study published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases (June, 2013).

The results were particularly surprising considering that only about a third of teenage girls have received the full dose of vaccine – a low rate compared to the 80 percent rate found in developed countries such as Great Britain and Denmark.

get moving A new sport for Kathy and her husband is off-roading.

“One thing I never would have done before the weight loss was to drive the Rubicon Trail,” said Reed. She and her husband recently drove this harrowing 22-mile trail near Lake Tahoe, developed especially for off-road vehicle enthusiasts.

“By age 50, my husband and I realized we couldn’t fake it forever. We asked ourselves where we wanted to go from here? The answer was – we didn’t want to become sedentary and live on medications,” Reed said, adding that, “Once you start to feel better, it snowballs and you start doing more and more.”

Kathy Reed encourages others to “Get Moving” for a better life!

Sometimes, a medical diagnosis can be a wake-up call, like when Kathy Reed’s husband, Dan, was told he had Type 2 Diabetes.

That was 12 years ago. Five years ago, Dan was told he would need medication to manage his diabetes. That’s when the couple decided they both needed to make lifestyle changes. Today, Kathy is 80 pounds lighter, and Dan has lost 50 pounds.

Kathy’s weight loss started with the Weight Watchers program, on which she lost the first 70 pounds. She lost the other 10 using the Medifast plan. While on Medifast, Kathy discovered something else: she was gluten intolerant. When Kathy cut out gluten from her diet, she not only lost more weight, but the pain in her knees disappeared, her mood swings stopped, and a 25-year allergy to latex went away.

“I’d been on anti-depressants most of my adult life, but when I stopped consuming gluten, my moods evened out and I haven’t needed medication since,” said Reed. Now she eats “lean and green” meals twice a day, with smaller meals, around 200 calories each, every few hours. With the pain in her knees gone, Kathy was able to begin a daily walk/run routine, and even started skiing again.

“Every day, I do a walk/run for about six miles, alternating walking and running every 30 seconds. I have a workout partner, and every day we get up at o’dark thirty and plan our route. I also have a dog to walk with, and when he hears that alarm go off, he’s up and ready,” she said.

Kathy had gone through weight loss spurts in the past, but this weight loss was different. “This time, the changes were not just physical, but mental.”

She now believes taking care of your physical and mental health is the most important thing you can do for yourself.

And what about tracking your daily walk, run, or weekend hike? RunKeeper, an app developed by Nike, uses your phone’s GPS system to log your distance, route, elevation, and speed.

Hannah’s sister-in-law, Rebecca Schnabel, is a runner, and RunKeeper is the app she prefers.

“I use RunKeeper for my marathon training, though it can be used for several other sports,” said Rebecca. “I can personalize audio cues based on time, running pace, and distance, which helps me stay on track throughout a workout, almost like having a personal trainer! I also like the app’s ability to track and compare my workouts, either on my phone, or on the app’s website.

As an extra bonus, I receive notifications every time I beat a personal record in my category,” Rebecca added.

Another popular app is MapMyRun by MapMyFitness. MapMyRun was named the “best running app” in 2012, as voted by its users.

To find out which apps work best for you, go directly to an app’s website on your computer or smart phone and try out its features. You may have to create an account, but you can deactivate the account if you don’t like the app. It’s also important to note that some apps charge a download fee, while others are free.

Most apps also require users to pre-select their privacy preferences, and for those who enjoy sharing workout information, many apps allow users to connect directly with Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, or other social networking sites.

Olympic Physicians to Join Hospital District in December Olympic Physicians will officially become a part of Public Hospital District No. 1 of Mason County (now known as Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics) on December 2, 2013.

In making the announcement, MGH&FC CEO Eric Moll stated, “Olympic Physicians brings a very strong culture of innovation and quality improvement as evidenced through the leadership of Dr. Mark Schlauderaff and Pam Schlauderaff with the clinic’s successful Medical Home journey. Medical Home is a primary care-based model that – at its core – puts the patient first by actively engaging, monitoring, and advocating for the patient.

quality Staff recognized for enhanced wound care training MGH&FC Wound Care Services recently enhanced its bedside wound care through the additional training of staff. Five staff members voluntarily took the Wound Treatment Associate (WTA) course – offered by the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) and through MGH&FC’s Continuing Education program.

Sally Petersen, RN; Donna Scott, RN; Rochelle Saeger, LPN; Kendra Ksen, RN; and Tiffany Preston, RN, earned their WTA title by putting in over 23 contact continuing education hours to upgrade their skills and complete the program.

The WTA program is an educational wound care program for non-specialty, licensed wound care providers. It offers a completion certificate in contact hours where participants must pass a written post-test and satisfactorily demonstrate competency in: performing risk assessment, pressure ulcer prevention, basic management of incontinence associated dermatitis and skin tears, documentation of wound status,

“They worked very hard and should be proud of their accomplishment,” said Lena McGinnis, BSN, R.N., CWCN, wound

care supervisor at MGH&FC. “This was an ‘extracurricular course’ the Hospital offered to its staff, who put in their own time and effort to enhance the skills that allow us to continue to offer excellence in care.”

Wound Care Services now includes Ostomy Care Proper wound care is vital to help

prevent infection or other complications which may arise after surgery or following an injury, and MGH&FC Wound Care Services has added Ostomy Care to their list of services. Wound Care Services provides the latest evidencebased practices in advanced wound and ostomy care for patients of all ages, and is available for inpatient or outpatient care with a physician’s referral.

Self-care for wounds at home is not always adequate. With the help of MGH’s Wound Care team that includes a Certified Wound, Ostomy and

Continence Nurse (CWOCN), a LPN, and a Chief of Wound Services’ physician, the patient receives the necessary information to properly care for wounds and ostomy issues. MGH Shelton Orthopedics now offers ConforMIS – a knee replacement system designed to conform precisely to your own, unique anatomy. And the entire process – from your pre-op diagnostic imaging to your post-op physical therapy – is done right here at Mason General Hospital.

Using a series of CT scans of your knee, a computer-generated virtual model is created to build your own, personalized knee implant designed to provide a precise fit and correct alignment.

The virtual “blueprint” is electronically sent to ConforMIS, where the custom implant is manufactured in approximately six weeks, and then delivered to your local surgeon in time for your scheduled surgery.

Frederick Davis, M.D., is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in knee replacement at MGH Shelton Orthopedics, and highly endorses this new technology for his patients who are good candidates for the procedure. “We’re pleased to be able to offer Fredrick J. Davis, M.D. the ConforMIS system to our patients who suffer Board Certified, Orthopedic Surgery with the pain of osteoarthritis or a knee injury,” said Dr. Davis. “The goal is always to find the right solution for each patient, and ConforMIS allows us to tailor a fit that will do that.”

MGH Shelton Orthopedics is seeing great patient outcomes with the ConforMIS knee replacement system since it began implementing it early this year. Ruth Benson, a 64 year-old Shelton resident who underwent a partial knee replacement in February, is now pain-free. “I wish I could have had the ConforMIS procedure on my other knee that was done the year before,” she said.

In May, Dr. Davis performed two more surgeries with the ConforMIS knee replacement system. Hilda Mayes, 68, of Matlock had her entire left knee replaced, is also free of pain, and anxious to have the same procedure on her right knee in the future. “Dr. Davis did a marvelous job!” she exclaimed. “I was back to normal activity in just a few weeks, and right now I’m walking about half a mile a day,” she said, adding, “– but I know I can go even further.” Georgette Bellack, 51, of Elma, had a partial ‘outer’ knee replacement and is now almost pain-free. “Dr. Davis and his team are amazing,” she said, describing the great care she received at MGH. “They make you feel like they’ve known you forever!”

In keeping with the Hospital’s culture to continually seek improvements in patient care and safety, MGH Laboratory recently completed an upgrade to its chemistry instruments. The upgrade expanded the number of types of lab tests that can be performed, in addition to shortening the turnaround times for several tests.

Support Program for Washington Healthplanfinder – the new way for Washingtonians to find, compare and enroll in health insurance – was unveiled in September. The support effort focused on providing answers to questions about new types of health coverage options and financial help to qualifying consumers.

CHOICE Regional Health Network is one of 10 Lead Organizations selected by the Exchange. Statewide, the Exchange has partnered with nearly 100 community organizations including public health agencies, coalitions, and regional health networks and began education and enrollment efforts in their local areas this fall. Additional partners will be confirmed in the weeks ahead. Known as in-person assisters, these organizations can be located on a searchable map at www.wahealthplanfinder.org/ map.php.

“We are encouraged by the way the community has rallied around this opportunity,” said Winfried Danke, CHOICE Regional Health Network’s executive director. “Tens of thousands of individuals and families in our region who are currently uninsured will have access to affordable healthcare coverage. As a Lead Organization, we want to ensure that every individual who has questions or needs help enrolling will have their needs met.”

The Exchange has also awarded $560,000 in grant funding to five organizations as part of its Tribal Assister Program. These organizations, which include a coalition of tribes and tribalaffiliated groups, have the expertise to help tribal members, their families, and other community members to compare and enroll

in health coverage through Washington Healthplanfinder.

“These diverse and trusted organizations are experts at reaching people in their communities,” said Kelly Boston, navigator manager for the Washington Health Benefit Exchange. “Through our networks, we offer the one-on-one support that allows those who are not likely to use a website or call center to learn about their options and enroll in health coverage.”

Assistance is available in up to 175 languages, and trained representatives are available weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. by dialing toll-free: 1-855-WAFINDER (1-855-923-4633). Consumers can also email: customersupport@wahbexchange.org.

“Our trained experts help ensure Washingtonians learn about and have access to the new health coverage options available through Washington Healthplanfinder,” said Richard Onizuka, Ph.D., CEO of the Washington Health Benefit Exchange. “People can get help online, over the phone, or in-person through a local organization or registered insurance broker if they need help enrolling in coverage.”

Customer Support Center representatives are trained and available to answer questions about health coverage options, how to access financial help, and what consumers need to know about the enrollment process. On October 1, they began to facilitate enrollment in health plans offered through Washington Healthplanfinder.

All health plans offered through Washington Healthplanfinder meet strict benefit and quality standards, and cover essential benefits including doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, and regular check-ups. An individual making up to $45,000 and a family of four making up to $94,000 a year may qualify for financial help toward premiums and copays. Free and low-cost coverage is also available.

His inability to be sedated gave your staff real challenges.
